Well, that’s new! Pretty awesome, I must say!

  • JakeStokes

    January 12, 2011 at 2:08 am

That was fucking awesome. I’ve wanted to see that for ages. Thank you Mike.

  • January 12, 2011 at 2:08 am

That is genius! Nice work Mike!

  • January 12, 2011 at 2:14 am

Wow, I didn’t think that this was even possible! Thanks for the wonderful tip and awesome video, Mike!

  • Valo216

    January 12, 2011 at 2:16 am

well its about mother fucking time that motherfucker mike started making some mother fucking video’s of his mother fucking own on this mother fucking site. Can’t wait to see some more…… mother fucker.

  • wrpen99

    January 12, 2011 at 2:18 am

I’ve done this before, except on super Mario all stars. What mike has probably only just learned is touching the flag pole from the back gives you a 1-Up.

  • Valo216

    January 12, 2011 at 2:18 am

btw, you should come to magfest with james!

  • January 12, 2011 at 2:21 am

I love it when Motherfucker Mike is in videos. Dude cracks me up. Great work guys!

  • Vash

    January 12, 2011 at 2:24 am

    That is Motherfucking Genius!!!

  • Phryj

    January 12, 2011 at 2:24 am

Cool! I never knew there was a way to get over the flagpole without editing the level. Are there going to be more videos like this?

  • January 12, 2011 at 2:24 am

    Awesome trick, thanks for sharing!

Are you wearing theater makeup, though? You look extra white.

  • CutzMan

    January 12, 2011 at 2:24 am

Mario 1, 2 and three behind you.

  • Koga

    January 12, 2011 at 2:28 am

This is beyond awesome, how did you even know about the turtle trick in general though? Like how did you first get the idea to even do that?

  • Mr. K

    January 12, 2011 at 2:29 am

Or you could just the space jump code on the Game Genie.

  • January 12, 2011 at 2:30 am

Ah, ok. That was a slight bit misleading. Should have been titled “Jumping Over The Flagpole In Stage One Of Super Mario Bros.”

Here is one glitch a lot people might not know. In Stage 1-2, when you get to the area for warp zone, go there and jump in the third pipe (level 4) before the game comes up with the Warp Zone name and stages logo. Once you do that you will automatically be transported to level -1 where it is an endless loop of you swimming. Every time you get to the end and go through the pipe in level -1 you will just keep replaying level -1 over and over again.

Thanks for sharing, Motherfucker Mike. I hope to see more of these kinds of things from you. I hope you have a great 2011!

    • July 21, 2014 at 9:11 pm

Not misleading in the slightest….. You have the comment that is irrelevant. The minus world glitch has no flagpoles, you use warp pipes, and it’s on the 2nd stage of world 1. This one is on STAGE 1, WORLD 1. There isn’t anything misleading about it. You are dumb….

  • gamer025

    January 12, 2011 at 2:31 am

Awesome! Finally a video of Super Motherfucker Mike. I’m wondering if you solved that yourself because had it been me, no fucking way I would have figured this shit out.

  • benjigoenitz

    January 12, 2011 at 2:34 am

wow!! great!!! i am going to try it!!!, i love MIke =)

  • Tempest

    January 12, 2011 at 2:44 am

Awesome! I’d like to see more videos with Mike!

  • Cory Power

    January 12, 2011 at 2:47 am

I’m all for Mike doing his own little videos. The guy’s super witty and deserves to be the star of his own videos. I hope this wasn’t just a one time thing.

  • January 12, 2011 at 3:03 am

Nice Mike, you should make more vids for this site!

  • Reputator

    January 12, 2011 at 3:15 am

I hope this is the start of more videos featuring Mofo Mike, and not just his drawings.

  • GoldRoger

    January 12, 2011 at 3:15 am

    that was pretty awesome, Mike

hope to see more of your videos

  • ssjup81

    January 12, 2011 at 3:21 am

How in the world did you even figure that glitch out?

  • strint519

    January 12, 2011 at 3:24 am

Sweet ass vid Mike. Now could you make one showing us how to knock out Mike Tyson?

  • Daniel

    January 12, 2011 at 3:28 am

Mike should have his own show. I’d love to see that becoming a reality. Maybe a show consisting of bizarre things in movies and games that people don’t necessarily pay attention to but are there. I always loved spotting those kind of things when I was a kid, things that were not intended to be in the final product. I don’t know, Mike is probably a busy guy. πŸ™

  • Ripper

    January 12, 2011 at 3:35 am

I recall seeing this on Youtube or something a while back, it’s really a neat trick!
I agree with Daniel, Mike should really do more videos like these.

  • paisan13

    January 12, 2011 at 3:47 am

Nice going Mike, that was so cool ^_^

  • January 12, 2011 at 3:58 am

    Mike = Awesomeness

    Following a damn turtle. lol.
Now that was hilarious. Mike, you motherfucker you, start doing more of this, if you would please.

  • January 12, 2011 at 4:00 am

    yes mike! more!

  • January 12, 2011 at 4:02 am

Hell yeah, that’s good stuff. It kind of helps pad out this retro x-entertainment vibe this site has. Mike, have you got any other ideas for quick “the more you know” shorts?

  • January 12, 2011 at 4:09 am

Hah, cool. Didn’t know that was even possible outside 3-3

  • captain redbeard

    January 12, 2011 at 4:16 am

this is the kind of useless shit we want to know more about!

    and: yeah, iΒ΄d also love a MF-Mike-spinoff.

  • WillWill

    January 12, 2011 at 4:26 am

I would also like to throw my vote in for a MF-Mike showcase which, like Daniel above me stated would have random/bizarre references and interesting things from movies/games that the general masses have overlooked.

Seems to me like you boys @ Cinemassacre have a keen eye for that sort of stuff.

Thanks for the vid, Mike! Love it!

  • Gonzalo_vm

    January 12, 2011 at 4:31 am

    mothafucker mike u r awesome

  • Doom_master1122

    January 12, 2011 at 4:34 am

Yeah Mike should have his own set of videos. More like this. Game Glitches, Secrets and oddities within the old retro titles. It would be great.

    Anyways. Awesome tip Mike.

  • January 12, 2011 at 4:45 am

If the dudes over at Rooster Teeth can come up with all sorts of weird videogame related shows, surely Mike can get his own show! πŸ™

  • Diorama

    January 12, 2011 at 4:50 am

It would be good if Mike would make other of those “how-to” videos, and see how they go

  • Mattashell

    January 12, 2011 at 4:54 am

Did the programmers make this possible on purpose?

  • leon

    January 12, 2011 at 5:01 am

MIke, you are freakin’ awesome!! bold, correct, straight to the point, and perfect!! Great job man!! I will try this stuff right away… thanks a lot dude!

  • krusses82

    January 12, 2011 at 5:07 am

Mike should have a sort of “video game proving grounds”

I challenge him to discover if running a lawn mower over the Nintendo power pad will get the high score in World Class Track Meet like MIke Chapman from HomestarRunner.com charges.

  • Sicboypeachy

    January 12, 2011 at 5:08 am

First of all: great video mike! great to see you in front of the camera.
Second of all: UUUGGHHHH BLIP!!! destroys my pc and my internet connection

  • January 12, 2011 at 5:47 am

    Happy New Year guys!
I had a problems with loging in, now my browser works correct. I enjoyed a lot the new series of Nerd, and didn’t like Christmas episode at all. As for this idea that Mike has to have his own show on Cinemassacre.com – it’s awesome!

  • January 12, 2011 at 6:03 am

Actually me and my cousin jumped over the pole in 1-1 without any tricks like that back in the day. It was a simple run and jump, but pretty difficult to time it right. But cool trick nonetheless.

  • January 12, 2011 at 6:09 am

Nice, looks “pretty easy” once you know that you have to follow the turtle…

  • Daniel

    January 12, 2011 at 6:14 am

A show on which Mike comes up with unusual and bizarre things about videogames and movies (or whatever else he enjoys talking about) would be pretty interesting. The open-ended format would prevent it from becoming formulaic and allow him to talk about anything he wants. It would be like a museum of oddities.

The only problem is that people would enjoy it so much, that he would have to come up with more haha.

  • angelspawn77

    January 12, 2011 at 6:15 am

How the hell does someone discover such a thing!? Some glitches that are out there I wonder how the hell they found that out, were they just trying a bunch of random shit until something came up? If so I wonder how many more of these glitches are undiscovered because you have to do some crazy precise stuff for it to work.

  • DaXiang

    January 12, 2011 at 6:26 am

    How do you discovered it!?

  • maul7685

    January 12, 2011 at 6:44 am

Mike, You need to do more secrets James can do reviews, Mike does the easter eggs!!!! the perfest combo!!!! and of course you have to end them the way you did this one. M. F. Mike… OUT!!!!

  • January 12, 2011 at 7:02 am

I want more of this! We don’t get to see enough of Motherfucker Mike. It would be the best idea in the world to get Mike to have his own segment/show on Cinemassacre. I would so watch the fuck out of that shit!!! MORE MOTHERFUCKER TO THE PEOPLE!

  • Laz

    January 12, 2011 at 7:58 am

I remember doing this once as a kid. It wasn’t using a turtle nor a platform nor another ‘cheat’ however. I don’t think it was 1-1 though, since I remember the castle never ending in the background when I ran.

Another thing I remember was when I managed to outrun a ‘fire-shot’. Never could reproduce that one either.

  • tylerdurden389

    January 12, 2011 at 8:07 am

That’s really cool. Mike, you should consider doing vids like this in the future. It’d be cool to get tips and tricks on the old school games (especially the old school games lol). They could air between AVGN video updates.

  • Flammenwerfer

    January 12, 2011 at 8:21 am

That was great Mike! You should really do more of these, you seem like such a nice person.

  • Riknight36

    January 12, 2011 at 8:30 am

Hey, Mike, cool video. And hey, James, we’d still like to have you on Cinemablend.com. We just did a story on Ivan Reitman confirming that everything we know about Ghostbusters 3 is wrong. You’d appreciate the site.

You can reach me at [email protected] if you’re interested. Thanks, guys and keep up the great work.

i would really like to see more videos with mike. and don’t cut down on the curse-words πŸ˜€

MotherFucker Mike? Black leather jacket? After that video of you with all of your action figures there’s pretending to be cool or hard. I don’t know who you’re trying to fool/impress! You sound like a real nice guy, just embrace the nerdiness!

Cool job with the video though.

  • January 12, 2011 at 1:52 pm

That fucking advert at the start will follow me to the grave! Every Cinemassacre and Penny Arcade video shows the same car advert. If I buy one, will they fuck off and leave me alone?

  • January 12, 2011 at 1:55 pm

Wow, Mike looks like Lupin the Third!

  • rubanek

    January 12, 2011 at 4:26 pm

I can’t get the turtle to “return”. I manage to jump on the turtle at the top of the screen but he never “returns”. C’est la vie.

  • Bob Sagat

    January 12, 2011 at 4:34 pm

I could hear your heart skip a beat when you almost missed the mushroom. Did you record yourself while playing as well? Would have been awesome to hear your reactions.
This is kinda like you guys beating Ninja Gaiden 2, would have been cool to see you guys playing that and actually finishing it.

  • Bob Sagat

    January 12, 2011 at 4:39 pm

Oh also, has this been done before? I tried to find someone who did it as well, but seems you’re the only one so far who’s jumped flag 1-1.
I can believe it took you “many, many tries”, but you probably didn’t even know whether or not it would work. Did you try it based on an existing glitch? Pretty hardcore dedication.

  • January 12, 2011 at 4:44 pm

I think I know why I’m not seeing the turtle “return” (see earlier comment). I’m noticing that your recording shows two blocks beneath mario. My television is cropping a lot of the screen. I’m only seeing about 1.125 blocks below Mario. I guess I’m going to have to hook my Nintendo up via the composite connection vs. the RF switch.

  • browncoat

    January 12, 2011 at 5:10 pm

    @Motherfucker Mike

Nice work Mike. You should definitely do more of these. Would this jump count as something Glitch Gremlin created?

    January 13, 2011 at 1:36 am

wow that is very cool i’ve watched lots of glitches for mario bros. never seen this one,

the first water lvl I remember when i was like 7 swimming over the green blocks at top just to find another warp zone but never accomplished again since. I remember just hitting the A with critical timing to bounce mario out of the water. maybe we can figure this out ….

not sure if anyone has done this before or knows a way

  • Analbag Thats Me

    January 13, 2011 at 1:43 am

Definitely an awesome new addition to the Cinemassacre arsenal to have you making these kind of videos. Now you got me wondering…how the FUCK did somebody figure out this game glitch??!! Who in their right mind would initially decide to try all of this stuff and how would they even know to do it?? Holy crap man! Maybe make your next video as a sketch of three possible scenarios of how people came about discovering this random thing.

  • Dr. Forrester

    January 13, 2011 at 2:32 am

Awesome trick Mike! I liked the enthusiastic grunt for killing that first koopa

  • Lanlost

    January 13, 2011 at 2:54 am

    @Analbag Thats Me:
“Now you got me wondering…how the FUCK did somebody figure out this game glitch??!! ”

I know what you mean and have felt that way a million times. It happened a lot more when I was past the age where I just accepted things like the minus world but still young enough to where the internet (which I got VERY young, I’m talking like 1993/94 thanks to my Dad’s friend working at Compuserve) hadn’t developed at all outside of major corporate sites and such. There were no gamefaqs or anything like that. What I’m saying is there was a sweet spot where I realized that these tricks had to be discovered by someone and just couldn’t figure out how they would have found it..

But now I think it’s simpler than that. The rate of finding tricks like these are MUCH accelerated due to emulation making trying things over and over way easier without having to set them up over and over, message boards (HUGE because of discussion about it and getting a billion people to all try it. SOMEONE is going to), etc.

Statistically, someone had to be in the right place at the right time. Ala, jumping up there at the same time the turtle fell in and hitting it causing the turtle to get crushed even though you were nowhere near it. This probably happened to a lot of gamers who just brushed it off with a “WTF?” Afterall, games back then were a mystery how they worked so you couldn’t even begin to think of how to manipulate it.

One day, someone probably did this and had an extended WTF moment, or had one.. and then proceeded to sit back and scratch their head and laugh with their other 8 year old peer friend. Then while catching their breath they noticed it came back. All that it would take at that point is some experimentation. Figuring out how they crushed the turtle. Wondering if they could get it to go all the way to the right.. and then the “wait a second.. .. no way, what if I could hit it and jump over the flag pole???” and.. VICTORY.

Although, I’m not sure when Mike discovered this. I have seen the individual trick of hitting the turtle like that.. but never thought of using it in that way. The fact that it isn’t well known (at least, I don’t think. I’ve never seen this before and I’m sort of a connoisseur of things like this for retro games) makes me think that it didn’t reach this stage in the NES heydays. The minus world, was WELL known in comparison. I’m still surprised just how many don’t know about it to this day.. but to me.. the Geek’s geek knew how to do it for sure.

I’m curious now if Mike can shed some light on this.

    Nice one Mike ^_^

Do you also know if this works on the GameBoy Advance ‘NES Classics’ cartridge?

You’d think so right? Apparently it’s just a direct port of the NES version, but I’ve waited ages for that guy to re-appear and then start walking back towards the end of the stage, but he never shows like in your video (sad face)

See this right here is the greatness of the NES 8-Bit, and video gaming in general. Returning to a video game that’s got 30 years or so on it’s neck and discovering new stuff you didn’t realise you could do. Thanks for the tip, I’m gonna try it for sure at some point!

The screen-wrapping glitch used to bounce off the turtle at the bottom of the screen is actually very common in NES games. In pretty much every NES platformer, jumping above the top of the screen will actually have your sprite (or at least, its hitbox,) wrap around to the bottom. This can occasionally be quite abusable, like in the Needleman stage v2 in Megaman 3, it can be used to trick the parachuters and dragonflies into aiming for the bottom of the screen, when you’re actually at the top.

Really cool to see silly stuff like this on the site, weird glitches were always part of the charm of older games.

Fantasticness. Mike Matei has officially (if not many years ago) gained immortal Nerd statues and has accomplished one of the greatest feats of Nerd history due to the fact that this has not been uncovered until recently.

In other words, Congrats. Welcome to the Club (although you seem to sport some Greaser+Goth=Gother clothes…are you possibly resisting the urge to join your friend James and all his followers?)

Then again, you could be a Greaser+Goth+Nerd+Geek=Grothereek!

The turtle would be offscreen on a regular TV, so I’m guessing nobody had any way of knowing this was possible until flatscreen tvs came out.

And yeah, that’s awesome nickname! Nice video also.

  • January 15, 2011 at 1:09 pm

Awesome! I hope this is your beginning in a long line of videos, just like James did his first few reviews as a fun joke for his friends.

  • January 15, 2011 at 6:08 pm

I always like seeing Mike, and I like the video; I absolutely had no idea about this particular glitch. That being said, I can’t be the only one who’s jumped over the flagpole in 1-1 without glitches. It’s not horrendously difficult, all you need is a good run up to the staircase at the end, should be about 3 good jumps to reach the top while running, and just launch at the last second. Not fancy, but it works.

  • mosaic.wav

    January 15, 2011 at 7:33 pm

Heh. That’s one of the great things I love about older games that you don’t see quite as much in newer ones; cool glitches like this. Especially in older NES games, there were plenty of little glitches to be found, most of them (like this one) absolutely pointless relative to game performance, but mesmerizing and fascinating all the same. Awesome little video.

    January 15, 2011 at 10:25 pm

I did this when I was a kid with the “Moon Jump” GameGenie code. Here’s the interesting part — as far as I can remember, when I jumpped past the flag pole, there was a repeating background of a castle wall… like the red/brown brick shaped with turrets at the top. Interesting how when done this way, that does not show up.

  • Gryz34

or u can use a game genie and use that one cheat that makes u jump extra high

  • Lakitu.007

    January 16, 2011 at 11:35 pm

    @ Richard :
It is probably because you saw it first on the 3-3 level where the castle is bigger and the brick wall is repeated infinetly.

When SMB came out, I did the trick once in level 3-3 but could not repeat the trick and nobody (includig my father who played the game at the time) would believe me that it was possible. It made me angry!

    Thanks for the video Mike!

Oh come on Mike! It’s not “turtle” it’s Koopa! Some Nintendo fan you are! πŸ˜›
This reminds me of the easter egg on New Super Mario Bros. DS in the first stage where if you somehow get the mega mushroom into your secondary bubble on the touch screen, use it just before the flagpole and walk across and giant Mario will knock down the flagpole, turn around and shrug xD It’s cool how many EE’s are in Mario, huh?

  • BKopp

    March 26, 2011 at 2:29 pm

i FINALLY got this to work. hadn’t attempted in a while, but first try today i was able to hit the koopa at the right time to boost me over the flagpole.
