AVGN: How the Nerd Stole Christmas

James / December 6th, 2010

This month’s Nerd episode is on YouTube. (Strange I know, just go with it.) It’s a big Christmas special that looks at some infamous NES titles such as “T & C Surf Design”, “Circus Caper” and “Fist of the North Star”.

Bear McCreary, who composed the music, has worked in television. He’s composed the music for The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica, Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles and a ton more. He recently posted a blog on his site about the music he wrote for the Nerd episode. For anyone interested in the creative process behind the AVGN videos, it’s mandatory you check out this blog. It includes a 5 minute “Making Of” video, and free downloads for the music. FOLLOW THE LINK HERE.

There is also a Nerd bonus on GameTrailers. A big Flashback special. The Nerd looks back at past years’ Christmas episodes. See it on GameTrailers “AVGN Holiday Memories”.

Youtube? … uhm, what’s going on? It’s like there’s an elephant in the room? Everything okay?

… Merry Christmas James and Mike, (and fans). Hope you and your respective families get some rest, toys, and stuffed bird! God bless!

  • December 8, 2010 at 2:56 pm

Ugh why Youtube? It takes forever to load.

  • December 8, 2010 at 2:56 pm

Everybody thanks for your concern, but everything is okay.

  • December 8, 2010 at 2:59 pm

I’ll take your word for it James.

    Yay :d \o/

    December 8, 2010 at 3:01 pm

As this is based on How the Grinch Stole Christmas, does this mean there will be copyright trouble from the owners when the DVD gets released, or will they accept this as a montage? The video is great, but that theory bothers me.

  • December 8, 2010 at 3:01 pm

This video was so awesome! 😀
Keep up the great work! I alreay can’t wait for next month.

    December 8, 2010 at 3:01 pm

Uhh that wasnt one of your best at all probably one of your worst in my opinion it wasnt really funny and was just well boring

  • December 8, 2010 at 3:02 pm

That was a great episode. Made me feel Christmas’sy inside.

I already said in YouTube comments but “Fist of the North Star”, if you didn’t already know, follows some dude who makes guys explode with precise hits before they even realise it. His catchphrase being “You’re already dead.” Followed by the guy exploding with a confused face.

Anyway Merry Christmas when it comes 🙂

I have to say when GameTrailers posted the recap yesterday I was slightly disappointed and hoped it wasn’t this month’s episode. I’m glad it wasn’t. The Christmas Special this year is amazing. Thanks James, Mike, and everyone else!

    December 8, 2010 at 3:03 pm

That was a really, really impressive episode. It was probably the most “professional” AVGN episode yet (I saw that it even had music composed for it… by the same guy who scores “The Walking Dead” I think). The narration, illustrations, and clips were awesome.

I’m glad to hear that the new video debuting YouTube doesn’t mean that anything’s wrong.

  • December 8, 2010 at 3:04 pm

Amazing. This video was perfect. Thanks James.

  • December 8, 2010 at 3:05 pm

No trouble if there’s a problem with ScrewAttack anyway… you need them more than they need you James! Great episode!

JAMES!! Do me a big favor and go back to 2 or more a month. I loved the more the merrier. Thanks for taking time to do these videos and I will be more then happy with any videos at all. Tell Mike that he is a great artist. The scenes that he incorporated from the original carton and made them you were wonderful!!

  • December 8, 2010 at 3:06 pm

    OMG I love IT!!!!!

Hehe! Very nice, James, and super creative.

And Mike, from one doodler to another, a big thumbs up for you! Great drawings! They really made the video. Especially James with that creepy assed grin on his face. lol

Cheers, and hey, Merry Christmas guys.

This one was a little Different than the christmas carol episodes. I liked it!
    Greetings from Finland!

  • December 8, 2010 at 3:22 pm

I’ll just safely assume the youtube choice was because he gave the vid to screw attack waaay too late. Cause you have no control over screw attacks releases right? there’s probably a deadline that got missed because the production quality was insanely high.

What a fucking rad episode…wow..I’m really stunned, you went all out (ESPECIALLY MIKE! way to step up the designs!!) I gotta buy myself a DVD or a shirt now.

    MERRRRRRY CHRISTMAAAAS everyone in Cinemassacre!!

have a good xmas james. many thanks.

    December 8, 2010 at 3:26 pm

this is ironic. I bought Ultraman when I was at Digital Press (I’m a big Godzilla/Ultraman fan, so I just wanted to have it) but I didn’t have James sign it because it had never been in one of his reviews. silly me!

awesome episode man, definitely a lot of work put into this one and some very funny shit. Its a new classic for me for sure…And we’re inching closer to episode 100…meaning we’re almost to E.T. on Atari (my official prediction) haha

High production values do not equal better. Go back to the old formula and dump the rhymes. The last couple Christmas videos were less produced and overall much better. Ahh well looking forward to the January episode.

  • yawn50d

    December 8, 2010 at 3:39 pm

Nerd misenterpreted what he heard. all the kids threw the games at their parents and all the parents beat their children so much that they couldn’t make another complaint.

  • thesociir

    December 8, 2010 at 3:41 pm

I wonder if things went like: James sends this to GameTrailers on Thurs, but they wouldn’t post it because of copyright issues -> James scrambles to put together the retrospective video before posting this one on his (not-for-profit = fair use) YouTube page.

  • December 8, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Awesome episode, one of the best.
Happy shutthefuckup to you, now you can rest.

  • December 8, 2010 at 3:42 pm

This is officially a contender for James’ best work of 2010. Here’s how I rank his best stuff:

    1. Mr. Bucket episode of Board James
    2. Cinemassacre 300
    3. AVGN: Swordquest
    4. How The Nerd Stole Christmas

    ALL epic stuff!!!!!

  • sindar

    December 8, 2010 at 3:42 pm

James, this was nicely done. Good to see lots of quality work going into these videos. Keep it up bud.
And wow, Bear McCreary? That’s impressive. The nerd’s got some connections. You’ll go places James. Thanks for a great year of vids.

  • Tyr

    December 8, 2010 at 3:43 pm

I don’t know how you snagged Bear Mccreary for this, but that is one rockin song. Very nice work once again, laughed my ass off and cried in the corner a bit when I remembered some of those incredibly shitty christmas gifts.

  • magicscreenman

    December 8, 2010 at 3:43 pm

Wait a sec…Bear McCreary? As in the guy who scored Battlestar Galactica? Damn.

Anyway, great video. Very creative. I know some people are bitching that it’s different, but dammit James, you deserve a little breathing room to do something fresh.

But I will admit that I’m eager to see another old-fashioned nerd video. Keep it coming James: You don’t disappoint. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

  • Asrial

    December 8, 2010 at 3:46 pm

Bear McCreary also did the music for Battlestar Galactica.

    December 8, 2010 at 3:48 pm

James, I been a fan you you since 2006. Each video has been funny and great. You hit a big section of the NES library, I think you should do more SNES games. The Lion King is one people have trouble with and I think you could make a good Nerd video off of it. I enjoyed the Special, thanks man.

  • LCmiracle

    December 8, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Fist of the North Star is a japanese Comic and was made into a Animation… in the 1980s…
But the anime is pretty oweson, too bad all the games relates to the series sucks!

  • Peter

    December 8, 2010 at 3:51 pm

    Just fantastic.
Thanks for the great year, James and Mike, and merry Christmas!

  • December 8, 2010 at 3:51 pm

What happened? You lose your contract with Screwattack? It was alright. I expected it to be much longer and zanier, but I can’t say this was bad either so I give you a 3 out of 5. Good job, but could have been better.

    December 8, 2010 at 3:53 pm

    Holy shit.

That was beautiful, man. Really the most heart-warming thing I’ve seen in these last days.

Definitively worth the wait. The illustrations were impeccable, funny and played an amazing role.
I really must congratulate you, Mike and Liam. This was simply excellent.

  • December 8, 2010 at 3:53 pm

This is exactly what I look forward to in a Christmas special. Excellent work! Loved it!

I do think you should make a blog entry explaining why this didn’t appear on Gametrailers. I, and many others, are very curious as for the official reason.

    December 8, 2010 at 4:19 pm

Another really enjoyable episode! Good work!
My only surprise was seeing ‘North and South’ mentioned in the bad games list. I had it on the NES as a child and really liked it. It was one of the few games I owned where two players could actually do something simultaneously, so it was a favourite of my brother and I. I’m tempted to dig it out this Christmas, but am worried now that my opinion will be shattered!

    December 8, 2010 at 4:22 pm

James and Mike, no need to respond to this or even acknowledge this post. This is just pure speculation.

I’m guessing that the Nerd sent in this video to GameTrailers and they rejected it due to possible copyright issues or for referencing Dr. Seuss, who wrote mainly for children, when the Nerd is definitely not for children. They probably said he needed a video to replace that one and he shat out AVGN Holiday Memories and posted the new nerd on Youtube so that it was still distributed.

  • December 8, 2010 at 4:23 pm

AMAZING… I love the Grinch christmas special since I was a kid. Props to Mike for the tittle cards, they were incredible and very detailed. The music, the rhymes, the shitty games, everything was great. Really enjoyed it! Merry Christmas James Mike and Kyle!

  • M3n747

    December 8, 2010 at 4:42 pm

I’m sorry, James, but this was the first of your videos I didn’t like and just found really boring. I know you were going for something different, but parodying a story nobody outside of the US knows wasn’t a good choice. You should’ve concentrated on the games you wanted to review – the way you did it, those games get lost among the parts I mostly skipped and what you say about them feels more like an off-hand comment rather than a well thought out opinion. I waited a whole month for a new Nerd episode and was thoroughly disappointed. I know I’ll never watch it again.

  • December 8, 2010 at 4:43 pm

    Great stuff!!!

  • Srceodizno

    December 8, 2010 at 4:44 pm

  • December 8, 2010 at 4:50 pm

    December 8, 2010 at 5:05 pm

The production value was amazing James, a little different but certainly worth the extra wait!

  • December 8, 2010 at 5:10 pm

(Sorry my bad english) but I LOVED this episode. Ok, It’s not and standard AVGN Episode, but it’s artistically awesome. The narration, the music, the drawings and making all the episode as a poem is very creative and difficult. It remembers me “Vincent” from Tim Burton. In one word: Bravo.

  • December 8, 2010 at 5:13 pm

There was a lot of work put into this one for sure.
All the games he had in the vid and all the riming was crazy.

  • December 8, 2010 at 5:14 pm

    You’re truly a filmmaker, James.

  • Jenny

    December 8, 2010 at 5:18 pm

Ah James I loved everything about this video! Don’t mind the haters man, this video was extremely creative, your rhymes were genius, it is interesting in a new way for AVGN (which rocks) and you added in the Metropolis Zone theme so you really can’t go wrong!

You’re the best around James, and nothing ever gonna bring you down! (ha ha)

  • December 8, 2010 at 5:22 pm

Well I’m disappointed this is a movie not an “angry video game nerd” review.

  • December 8, 2010 at 5:24 pm

I HIGHLY doubt James is considering ending the nerd series. Why are a lot of people complaining…oh this episode was boring…why would you do something like this…why put so many games in one. I like it. Just consider his previous Christmas episodes…We’ve had 2 Bible games episodes, Winter Games…which wasn’t too “Christmassy”, and of The Nerd’s Christmas Carol. This episode was very much a take on How The Grinch Stole Christmas as to Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol. I think it’s brilliant.

  • Djister

    December 8, 2010 at 5:25 pm

Fun and surprising episode for sure! I laughed out loud at the snow dog (nice illustrations, by the way) and at other parts too… thanks for the video, and merry Christmas in advance!

Please review Total Recall for the NES at some point. Thanks! 😉

  • December 8, 2010 at 5:26 pm

I remember playing T&C i loved the skating part but the surfing truly sucked good video I really enjoyed it and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

  • gillinator

    December 8, 2010 at 5:26 pm

Nice work James! Awesome artwork, I especially like the snow figures of video game characters, like the dog from Duck Hunt! The writing was great, too, but you must tell me how did you get Bear McCreary to do the score? That man is amazing, he did the scores for BSG and Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles! Is he a fan? Great get!

  • December 8, 2010 at 5:44 pm

great work. i don’t see what all the fuss is about. it’s great that you’re doing your own thing and using the nerd in a creative manner rather than a repetitive gimmick. stay true and don’t force the anger for these ungrateful bitches, otherwise you’ll look like an ass complaining about the sega port of altered beast.

thanks for invoking the spirit of the season. happy holidays

I enjoyed this episode so much, I felt compelled to registered and comment.

    5 Quick Points:

    1. Way to make a creative, unique, and awesome Christmas episode this year.
    2. Incredible job on the production value here: writing, editing, illustrations, voice over, music, etc. Too many people take this for granted and it’s a lot of work.
    3. Nice job on adapting it to Seuss with the rhyming and original tale. Very cool and not easy to do.
    4. Way to go giving us MULTIPLE reviews here.
    5. Thanks for keeping a FREE model where we pay NOTHING for your videos. I’ve been enjoying them for years. Keep it up. And please, by all means, ignore ungrateful and critical comments that get annoyed when you don’t deliver the SAME experience each ep. I’m very happy to see you get creative and give us variety!

Awesome episode James and Mike and all that contributed!

I gotta say that all the hard work you guys put into it was worth it!

Rhymes, music, pictures and all were fantastic!

Beauty and the Beast…why that one?

    Keep it up!

I think this special episode is great. Really dig how you were able to tell the story video game style and sneak in some game reviews. Fists of the North Star, lol, great job guys.

  • December 8, 2010 at 6:05 pm

Sweet episode James! I enjoyed it a lot. Although I am wondering why it’s on YouTube and not GT or hell, even SA.

Well worth the wait, great job James 🙂

  • December 8, 2010 at 6:08 pm

I haven’t been commenting in a long ass time, but I have something to say to all the haters: this episode was epic. James really works his ass off for videos like this and Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle. I know b/c I’m a 2 year Video Productions student. This shit is hard! All I hear on these boards is “This sucked. I want a traditional regular review.” You people are lucky he does professional stuff like this!! Let the man be creative! If you want a regular review go to a different site! The man is a filmmaker first, gamer second. Let him express himself.

James, I appreciate all the work you did to make this. One of the best Nerd videos in my opinion, and I’ve been with you since ’06. I hope you and Mike have a Merry Christmas.

Well said, Aaron. My brother-in-law has a career in video production and always says the same thing. James and his crew make it look easy, but it’s extremely difficult to do quality videos like these. We just get programmed by watching tv and movies into thinking it’s just standard to get this level of production, but take a look at similar “budgeted” videos on YouTube and you will see how talent here.

  • ender2272

    December 8, 2010 at 6:21 pm

i think its time to stop wasting your time with these short vids. they are mildly interesting at best, but a full blown movie or game would be nice to see from you, i mean surely you must have an idea of whats good. clearly your heart yearns for bigger things.

  • December 8, 2010 at 6:21 pm

  • Xuchilbara

    December 8, 2010 at 6:22 pm

This was very entertaining. The rhymes were good and who of us out there who fondly remember watching ‘How The Grinch Stole Christmas’ on television as a kid not enjoy the obvious homage to that?

However, I also miss the days of straight reviews. James’ flair for inventing funny characters and for coming up with entertaining skits are wonderful too. Now though it feels like the episodes have become more about skits and less and less about the bad games themselves. The Texas Chainsaw review was about the perfect blend of review and skit and is still one of my favorite episodes. I do have a soft spot for Little Red Hood though because it’s simply a straightforward review of a really bad game with little jokes thrown in.

Excellent job on this though. Here’s to hoping for more straight up reviews mixed in with your lovely skits. 🙂

    December 8, 2010 at 6:22 pm

Oh Nerd, in Your (rightful) fury You know half the story… as the point of view originates from ones point of observation!
I went through “Toki” on amiga with a smile on my face… yes each of the hopelessly scripted levels that brought no variety and zero replay value…
And even worse… I loved “North and South” with its nut crunching controls and pseudo strategy feel- loved it because I could play it with (better yet against!) a buddy, who also did not mind its flaws…
Why did I and many others not complain? … About all these horrid games?
…Well We live in Poland and the rest of eastern europe- the shit hole of the world… And we had it even worse than You… If any game came our way- We had to play, shitty or not- We had no choice…
And if anything was made here where We endured all the horrors- weather it was good or not it always got a cult following…

FRANKO THE CRAZY REVENGE …… I lost my childhood ignorance to this game… and All the other gamers around here did too

For You it will be an exotic experience- a game as shitty as this, becoming a legend over here… I bet the guys who made the hit game “The Witcher” played this…. DO IT… REVIEW IT!!!!!!

  • December 8, 2010 at 6:22 pm

First I would like to ask, did Mike do all the artwork for this? If so, he did an amazing job. Mikes art is usually awesome, but this is by far his best work. Well done Mike! You should be working full time as a cartoonist or something….

James, this is one of my favorite episodes you have ever done. Bravo man, Bravo.

After watching the episode, I think I figured out why it wasn’t posted on GT…I think GT was worried about copyright infringement issues with the whole Dr. Seuss theme.

    December 8, 2010 at 6:25 pm

Yeah I have no idea what the hate is all about: this was GREAT! Your Christmas episodes are always your best and this doesn’t disappoint in the least! The production values were through the roof for this one–you must’ve been planning this one out for months. The illustrations by Mike were incredibly true to the classic book/cartoon. And I loved to hear you review in meter haha. I think the Nerd needs an episode like this every once in a while to prevent things from going stale. Despite what many say, you can clearly see that you still care about your most beloved character. Don’t listen to the hate: This was excellent, and I can’t wait for more Nerd in the New Year!!

But also, what’s up with it being on YouTube? Some kind of copyright issue with Gametrailers?

  • TheValsalvaManeuver

    December 8, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Wow, that was epic. This is officially now one of my classic Christmas Eve night things to watch. The video showcased a lot of different talents from the crew involved, and I have high expectations for the AVGN movie. It seems like James et al are really expanding their creativity and just keep getting better at what they do. For the people complaining about there not being a “review” I think the Fist of the North Star segment was pretty extensive and he found some pretty hilarious glitches to rhyme perfectly.

I’m not sure what the deal is with the video being on YouTube, and it was frustrating since I normally download them from GT, but if anyone else likes having “hard copies” I can confirm it is possible to capture the flv and convert it to mov or mp4 etc. I won’t elaborate here since there might be a reason why James doesn’t want the video downloadable, but it should be pretty easy to figure out.

I just watched it the second time again. I saw new elements and heard new words that I hadn’t seen or heard before. Because of the screens, the spoken dialog and the rhyming, there are a lot of things you can focus on. It just so happens the video got a good replay value. it’s certainly different than your regular video’s, but there will always be people complaining. Though I do like the classic video’s, I liked this one too. I think it’s great and very well made. It certainly entertained me for 24 min.

Kittie, I could kiss you, but.
I’ve been waiting all year… – For the christmas episode,
    now it’s finally here..
So leave me the fuck.. alone… so I can watch. it.

    – To the tune of the bo-wow, bo-WOW, bo-wow, bo-WOW castle music from Super Mario World which I just happened to be playing while my cat was annoying me and I noticed the episode just came out.

Enjoy. I’m awesome, you don’t have to tell me.

  • Lanlost

    December 8, 2010 at 9:28 pm

I’m surprised.. This is on youtube.

Also, I wasn’t really playing Super Mario World. I had just discovered Brutal Mario which is AWESOME. It’s not “Brutal” as in that crazy barely winnable super fucking difficult Super Mario Bros rom hack..No, It’s a full fledged true hack.

Obviously new levels but new graphics new gameplay that is acutally interesting. Like: a level where you have to catch Yoshi and as soon as you do the level is over. New boss battles taken from OTHER games.

This isn’t an easy task, as a programmer I really respect the amount of pure assembly hacking that had to go on. It had to be massive amounts.

You should really try that. That and Super Metroid Redesign and Parallel Worlds (from what I’ve heard) for A Link to the Past.

James, loved it! In fact I loved it enough to make an account to TELL you that I loved it!

I was really excited to see Impossible Mission 2 at the end…I used to play that with a friend of mine and we’d always laugh at the exaggerated scream the guy made when he’d fall.

  • December 8, 2010 at 11:45 pm

    Great Video James!

Your work has inspired me to start a collection of my own, a collection of old video games. Work such as this makes me appreciate the variety in your videos, and the amount of work you and your crew put into them makes me know how much all of you appreciate your strong, and extremely well-developed fan base. These videos are extremely well made, and I know that there is a strong team working with you to create the magic shown here. I love how you and the crew were able to combine a partial review into this holiday special episode and the remake of the classic story told by Dr. Seuss, in such a flowing, and creative manner. Being only a fifteen year old, I can definitely say that Cinemassacre, and all of the work that is put into this massive, overwhelmingly amazing site, certainly deserves all of its glory and honor it has already received! Keep up the amazing work! Don’t stop The Angry Video Game Nerd! You’re doing a phenomenal job!

  • Luke1448

    December 8, 2010 at 11:55 pm

Excellent video! That was so creative, I absolutely loved it. I’ve actually been hoping that you would review Circus Caper. I remember getting so frustrated in the level with the jetpack, especially because you had to start from the beginning if you died. Once again, great episode! Merry Christmas!

  • Everestman161

    December 9, 2010 at 12:17 am

He’s BAaaack!! I’m so glad that you’re getting back on track dude! It’s not that I havent liked what you’ve been posting lately it just seems to have lost something that you had in your earlier reviews. The Lester (SNES) review could have done without. The game sucked and it was so bad that it wasn’t even worth talking bad about. It was like you were reaching to try and make it funny, but the game was just too bad. This review, aside from using a whole bunch games, had that spark that you have been known for. Like I said, it wasn’t what you said or did, it was simply the game selections. The Castlevania series excluded, cause that was really good, I didn’t feel that you had to go back to re-do the Back to the Future or TMNT games. Even those (origs) were fine. Don’t reach! You have a tallent in what you do and what I would recomend is taking a look back at those videos that you did a few years ago and stick with the techs. that worked. All with that being said, you already know I’m a fan of your work and thank you for the help that you’ve done for me and if nothing else just take what I said as you would any critic.

PS. If you’re planning the ET for your 100th episode (which I hope) please remember the basics. I don’t have to tell you. I’m simply dropping a quick reminder for you. If it aint broke, don’t fix it. Thanks for you time again bud.

  • December 9, 2010 at 12:18 am

I love your work. I can tell much effort and time went into this episode. Mike really went above and beyond.
While it is creative and well done… I did not laugh or even smile once. It will be the very first episode ever that I won’t watch over and over. I look forward to next months episode.
Basically, I am saying… We did not see YOU the whole time, and the poetry confined your dramatic abilities. I love you . You magnificent bastard.

damn :/ i may be one of the very very few who didn’t like this episode at all =( probably because i’m not a native english speaker, so the rhymes weren’t as funny to me. Also, the Grinch story is not well known in other countries, so that probably didn’t click with me either.

The artwork was awesome though 😀 and i think it was a great job anyway, though i didn’t enjoyed it that much.

  • December 9, 2010 at 1:12 am

I have to admit, towards the beginning I really wasn’t feeling this episode. Then once I got about halfway through I couldn’t stop laughing. The tempo was nice; very well thought out and put together. Excellent job.

Excuse me while I engage 12 year old fanboy mode, but:
    OMFG BEST VIDEO [email protected]%[email protected]#[email protected]#$!

ok that aside, you touched on some games that I remember sorta fondly but were very worthy of scorn. (Fist of the North Star. Double Dragon Atari. Ballz (yeah I said it lol, I have fond memories of playing that with a friend) .. Also karate champ lol

Like many others, this video made me decide to register just to tell you that. Awesome work. The response is overwhelmingly positive. And the amount of work you put into it makes it totally worth the additional wait and then some. I would’ve gladly waited til the 25th for this one, be the best christmas present to be given.

Anyway, fanboi out. Keep up the good work, can’t wait til next month.

    Dear Santa,

I hear that James is pretty good with animation. So next Christmas I would like to see some stop motion clay animation from Cinemassacre. I know it seems a bit awkward, but all the kid specials I remember growing up had it, like Rudolph and Frosty. Today the only time I get to see it is at Christmas time and robot chicken. So that’s my request. Some stop motion animation. Preferably clay.

Thanks Satan Claus, your the best.

Thanx for adding to what I hope will be an awesome Christmas James. This has to be one of the best AVGN episodes you have made, and thanx for the flash back episode too, that was fun looking back at those, I still laugh so much when I hear that “raging athiest” in the sunday school part. Hope you and your cinemassacre team has a very good Holiday season, can’t wait to see the first AVGN episode of the new year, Street Fighter 2010 will be a little hard to top.

    RIP AVGN seriously?
Dude get over yourself. James isn’t your entertainment monkey. He’s an artist who creates these videos as a personal expression of his talents and interests. Sure, James likes to make videos that we all can enjoy, but if he wants to experiment and stretch himself as a film maker, then who are you to criticize? Personally, I think this was a great video that displayed a whole separate facet of the Nerd. I like that he’s trying to be creative and branch out from his usual style. You, sir, however, need to get off your high horse and be damn thankful that James still continues to produce the AVGN videos for us, even though he has so many other aspirations as a film maker. He does you a favor and you insult him? Get off it dude.

  • December 9, 2010 at 5:51 am

James, you really need to do a review of The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle games that were out. There are a handful on the older systems. It could really be a funny tie in. Great classic cartoon, that you could use for some great skits, plus the NES version is so god awful there is plenty of ammo for game jokes.

  • December 9, 2010 at 7:02 am

    @superrcain and feure

You guys sure hit the nail on the head, couldn’t agree more. James is going all willy-nilly doing all this clever and creative mumbo jumbo using the same comedic techniques we know and love to create a video that inspires nostalgia through not only games, but our memories of childhood Christmas mornings waking up to video games under the tree and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” rerunning on our televisions all day. What a load right!? It’s almost like he was trying to make a Christmas themed video in a style unlike whats been done already year after year, which is a completely bad idea huh fellas? and yeah, next time my “this ain’t good liek Sega CD episode when back when it was when avgn was good show RIP AVGN sucks ballz” comment gets deleted i’m gonna spray period blood all over the message board to let everyone know just how sour I feel about it as to expose the immaturity (which is indeed very teenage girl) of our buddy James. Oh and if you still happen to be reading this and haven’t realized it’s entirely tongue in cheek…chances are you’re one of the geniuses that bug the hell out of me on this and probably a handful of other forums. If you hop in wiki, constructive criticism is defined like this: “Constructive criticism, or constructive analysis, is a compassionate attitude towards the person qualified for criticism. Having higher experience, gifts, respect, knowledge in specific field and being able to verbally convince at the same time, this person is intending to uplift the other person materially, morally, emotionally or spiritually.” I rarely read a comment anywhere that fits any of this criteria.

Hello, first off nice work, was not what I was expecting but hey it’s xmas.

    Reviewing the video. ^.^

As the name says “Angry” Video Game Nerd there was no ANGER, lol yes I know it’s xmas. And I was waiting for game reviews. 3 games were mentioned but were not clearly explored. And, correct me if I am wrong but AVGN cant be the “Grinch” his whole prepuse is tu review the game and help us stay clear of these abominations, unless the moment of weakness came to our fellow surviver and wants us to feel the madness of some of these aweful games but, it backfired and probably made AVGN more sad knowing that we had fun where he didn’t. Then he goes and gives the newer more recent games out? Why? they were already happy. ^.^

Well I’ll probably de flamed But, what I am saying is what I felt in this video, I love watching and rewatching and laughing my ass off with all the videos on cinemassacre, and I am not saying this wasnt a good job, but it was: nice imaging, the xmas poem, etc. but lacked the AVGN spirit.

Maybe a AVGN vs Grinch would have worked better. 😉

Well keep up the good work and thanks for the rib cracking laughter cinemassacre gives me. 🙂

Long time visitor, first time commenting.

Loved it. It seems whatever James is doing is awesome. I’m not even that big a retro games/movie fan. Still, I watched nearly all videos here on this site at least twice. It’s just fun to see what James’ thoughts are on so many things. Keep it up with.. whatever. Most likely I’ll like it. (=^_^=)

Now, to this video. Very cool that Mike was a big part this time. Liked to see more of his art. The narrator was okay. Was in the style you’d expect from a Christmas story. James should have adapted to a different kind of voice too in my opinion. Every time James speaks, it sounds kind of out of place. It still is funny though. Now if that really is Bear McCreary singing in between, that is really awesome. That voice is just perfect! Sounds really good! The humor is very nice. Rhymes combined with Nerd Humor? Yay! It’s here, it’s not a rumor.

    @People complaining
Unless you think it’s absolutely valuable for the creator(s) of the video to know what you’re thinking, please do not comment. Write an email. And if you do, please do that in a formal, respectful and constructive manner. Also, if you’re asking why provocative comments are being deleted, it’s maybe because the comment section is not meant for heated debates.

I don’t mean any offense to anyone out there and in the least mr Rolfe, but i really don’t get what made people appreciate this episode so much. I’m not going to go all “i want more reviews like the power glove” or whatever and the reason i’m not from the US might make this particular video near unwatchable for me, but really… doesn’t anyone feel the nerd jumped the shark? I mean this one was like a rerun on TV. Most of the footage was from old episodes and while i appreciate all the effort of the rhymes and all, sometimes the added creativity slowly drains the magic.

It’s fine with me though, i’m not gonna try and be all provocative and say “RIP AVGN” because that’s just lame and i really still appreciate what mr Rolfe is doing (AVGN and MM stuff) but it just really jumped after the Mario 3/NES accessories episodes. Doesn’t mean it all sucks, it’s just lost it’s edge and that’s fine. one hundred episodes isn’t an easy feat here either so no worries! cheers!

Ive been a fan since the AVGN started years ago and I really love his videos from the AVGN , Board James to MOnster Madnes in October ( my favorite ) I cant understatnd all of these trol’s all of a sudden hatting on James. We are not paying to see his vids and to be free entertainment it is better than half the shuff that shows on TV. Dont expect for every vid to be better than the last cuz not even high rating shows do that. I like all his vids not all are a classic but its still worth the watch and I enjoy it . My favorite episode could be either the BAtman, Gliches, castlevania 4 part or action 52 but just because a new one is not as good doesnt make me mad and start troling james…… Keep your head up James and MIke and keep doing your thing because there are many of us that love and enjoy your vids and this was a perfect one for christmas and yes I said christmas not that Happy holidays crap. Hello, long time fan, first time commenting 🙂

First of all, loved the video, the fact that you were able to insult a game and rhyme at the same time is simply amazing, i’ve no idea how long it took you to think about all of those rhymes, but damn it must’ve been time consuming.

As for people hating on this video, you all need to stop, you know what? im glad it wasnt a review, he gave us something different and i for one enjoyed it.

    December 9, 2010 at 9:39 am

Ive been a fan for I dont know how long and I really like your AVGN, reviews, Monster Madness, Boardgames etc. videos but this one I didnt like, at all.
Singing ruins everything, leave it to singers and dont implement it in videos. The grinch angle was a clever idea and the the multiple games sounded good on paper but the final video is just not enjoyable to me.

I see I am not the only one (eventhough I just dislike this video) and it seems to me that your fans are simple people. We like to see you ripping games a new one and profanity.
I hope you take the criticism and go back to what you do best and if you dont, dont expect us to swallow it because there are other ways of entertainment.

Just because YOU don’t support him, there is no need to throw our names in there.

I’m sorry to say that I’m starting to loose interest for AVGN. The episodes only come once a month, and the last ones have been shorter than usual and not as good as the older episodes.
James Rolfe is good at what he does, but his other projects are taking time from AVGN which sadly I think is going to have negative effects on the fanbase.

  • stroupnp

    December 9, 2010 at 9:49 am

Hey James, I doubt you read all of these comments, but I wanted to let you know that I am a huge fan of yours. I’ve been following you since around 2007 when I first saw your Castlevania II/TMNT reviews and I never miss a new episode of the Nerd. Just recently, I have discovered your other projects like “Board James” and “You Know Whats Bullshit”. I also have to say that I was incredibly impressed with your documentary last week regarding your history of movie making. Your devotion and passion are incredible and inspiring. I don’t mean to kiss you ass too much, but as someone who dabbled with movie making when they were younger, I know how much work I put in and still I can’t imagine the time to do what you have done.

Anyway, thank you for sharing the fruit of your passion (that sounds questionable) with us. I hope that you continue to do so and are not discouraged by any short-term fad followers that would be critics of your work as it continues to evolve.

Great episode by the way! Excellent job on the drawings Mike! I know the Nerd gets all the love, but I can see that Mike appears to do a hell of a lot of behind the scenes stuff, so thanks!

  • December 9, 2010 at 10:14 am

@ half of you: Styles change, tough shit, get over it. If you can’t then just quit coming here. Your comments do nothing but prove how annoying and selfish you are. I’d rather James just quit this act all together than continue to feed your constant whining about pointless shit. Now excuse me but the AVGN couldn’t have said it better when he spoke the immortal words, “what a shitload of fuck”

  • luimartinE

    December 9, 2010 at 10:14 am

I’m feeling a little bit tricked here.
This video is good but not half as good as the old ones. It would be an entirely good episode if it would have came in beetween two weekly regular episodes. But is wasn’t. Waiting a month to see old recycled footage of games… No live action shots at all. The drawings and the rhymes are kind of fun but I dont now…
I’m rewatching the old episodes right now for like the 6. time. Anyone remembering the texas chainshow massacre video? That was awesome! Outdoor shots, lots of characters, complete storyline.
Compared to that this is “shitsauce”, as the nerd would say.

  • hulkface

    December 9, 2010 at 10:17 am

Reading comments from the babies who are all upset about something like this is hilarious. For example…

“…..but the people that support you don’t want that. It feels like you’re giving the finger to all the nerds that love you and you’re calling us fucking nerds with no lives. I used to like you, but no longer… You used to be a role model for all of us, but those days seem to have changed – now it just seems to be all about the money. I have waited for a good video for months, but I can’t wait any longer.”

He’s not calling you a nerd with no life, you actually have no life . You’ve proven it by your ridiculous post. He was a role model for you? Really? How? At work do you tell your boss that you think he’s a pile of horseshit and he sucks ass? How would avgn be a role model for you? Seriously, are you retarded? and if you actually are a retarded person then i apologize in advance for insulting your kind.

Ok so, some people don’t like it? Fair enough. But shut the fuck up already! Seriously? How much whining can one do?! If you don’t like the video, don’t fucking watch it! SIMPLE.

If anything is going to deter James from making more videos, it’s you negative arseholes spewing out your pathetic words. You know what? Don’t ruin it for the folks here who love these videos. These videos are for OUR enjoyment, and they certainly aren’t owed to us.

You will always find morons when it comes to entertainment of any kind, you can’t please everyone, sure. But know that you made a LOT of people smile with this video, and that we are behind you 100%.

To all of you complaining about this video because YOU didn’t like it, grow the fuck up and realize that many others did. How much are you paying for James’ episodes? Thought so.

It’s a Christmas special for the love of god! I LOVED how he put a twist on the Grinch story that I for one grew up with. That with some great artwork and various game reviews, equals a winning video IMO.

If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. We all come to this site to be entertained. Keep your fucking negativity to yourself. No one wants to hear that shit.

    @ James

Just wanted to say I’ve only recently started following the AVGN series. Read about it a long time ago but not till about 6 months ago did I finally cave in and checked it out and was I glad I did. I’m virtually your age so the vids just instantly clicked as a gamer during that age. Now a days, you (in the general sense) really rarely have that much time to game what with all the added responsibilities of adulthood and quite honestly, even when you do, it seems games just no longer have that appeal they once did when we were younger even with the primitive concepts, controls, graphics, etc. Of course, nostalgia does play a factor in that and it seems to only grow stronger the older you get but regardless. Judging by your other projects and responsibilities, it’s unlikely you’ll ever read this but in the small chance you do, thanks for the entertainment you provide. This episode was amazing in the sense it could have been the same formula we’ve come to expect but instead it was something different yet maintained the elements of “AVGN”. I literally howled at the spot on T&C Surf Design. One of the “classics” in my collection.

Also, big ups to MF Mike. Those illustrations just MADE this episode and I was quite impressed at the detail in them. Thanks a lot, guys. Happy Holidays.

Fantastic job on the video Mike and James! I loved it! Man, I can really see how much time and effort went into it – Bravo. Thank you for all your efforts.

And I can’t believe you mentioned Swamp Thing. What a shitty game that is. I played on an emulator attempting to find my own little piece of shitty video game hell, and oh boy, what a piece of rat fuck that is. Just the memory of playing that piece of Giraffe ass makes me want to run screaming, while gauging out my eyes.

  • Kabor

    December 9, 2010 at 12:07 pm

People complaining about negative comments are more annoying than the negative comments.

The maker of the videos sure is the person who knows what should his videos to be like I am pretty sure AVGN knows what many people want, but like in many music bands he can do what he want and it is just bonus if fans like it.

Still being realistic and saying what dont like in the video is not horrible thing to say. Saying good job to everything dont mean anything at all. How to tell diffrence between good better and bad if everything is always only good, good and good.

I my self didnt really like the video, but that is just my feelings about it. Looks like special episodes are not really my thing. 😛

    December 9, 2010 at 12:25 pm

okay like i said i really don’t mind the whole matter very much and whether you like the episode or not, let’s face it: money is being made. Maybe not directly but through the ads on the site. i.e. There IS money involved in this and the more visitors the site gets the more money it will yield.

Like i said, i don’t mind this, Rolfe deserves to make money for his efforts! but one can’t say that we’re not paying, our visits make keep the site up and ensure he doesn´t have to take a dayjob anymore, which in turn leads to more content on the site etc.

I loved this video so much. Thanks to James and Mike for taking the time to make something so wonderful and funny, and for never mailing it in or anything with the AVGN videos. I know you’ve been making them for a long time, but you still have a high standard of quality and that shows a lot of commitment as well as a lot of loyalty to your fans. Thanks again and keep up the good work (although I have no doubt you will.)

  • veil

    December 9, 2010 at 12:48 pm

@James (who probably won’t even read this): Very nice video. I especially like the rhyming (which must have taken you quite a while to complete).
Some people just need to complain about everything that’s even the slightest bit different from what they expect. Sure, everybody is entitled to his/her opinion but you should (and thankfully will) always do your own thing.

@people who say the AVGN “lost his edge” or something like that:
With all the movie reviews he’s doing (including Monster Madness) I agree that it seems like that professional approach also affected his nerd-character in some way.
But actually I prefer the more “serious” nerd we had in recent episodes as well as the higher cinematographic standarts which naturally come with his aspirations as a filmmaker. James tends to analyze games and talks about their flaws instead of just makig up new expressions containing the words “shit” and “fuck” (which IMHO really got old after 6 years.) Of course swearing and cursing about the games is still a trademark of the character but I think even the nerd may have grown up over time. The only reason James is doing these videos is to entertain YOU (for free!) and to make his living so he can keep doing it.

If you don’t like it, post your comment about it and leave. But don’t just keep trolling every video about how much he sucks in general and how you feel betrayed as a fan. (“Rolemodel”? Seriously?) . Because that’s just pityful, immature and useless.

What game is that at 4:14? I had that game when I was a kid and cant remember the name. Great episode too, all the haters can eat the rotten asshole of a roadskill skunk.

Woa, that was indeed a chrismas special 😀 Might not see it as often as other episodes, due to less of the games being shown. But damn its a nice piece of work and a lot of though put into it. Great to watch 🙂 So two heavy thumbs up for that 😀

Way to challenge yourself with this wildly different episode! The best part, though, is the whole group of drawings by Mike. The nerd / grinch mix was done absolutely perfectly – he completely nailed that smile. Finally, I will be repeating “fick, fack, fuck” far too often this holiday season; it’s my new catchphrase. Merry Christmas.

    December 9, 2010 at 1:23 pm

I was honestly “fooled” when I saw the bonus clip show on gametrailers, I was confused as to where all the work from Mike was, and then I saw this posted on youtube. I really hope everyone else gets to see this instead of missing out on it because they were expecting it only on Gametrailers.

The rhyming was perfect for a nerd episode, it doesn’t try too hard but it rolls just right to make me laugh at each one of them. The illustrations were awesome, I’ll have to rewatch it to look at each one closer to see the games and other small details put in. I wonder if those will ever be auctioned off?

Though I wonder if there’s any small easter eggs in this video – like the wizard of oz AVGN with the suicide ROB munchkin or the lyrics being synched up. Maybe we’ll find out soon! Can’t wait for 2011!

  • December 9, 2010 at 1:28 pm

After watching the latest Xmas Episode, I do have both some positives and negatives. I won’t be too hard on you, I promise 

I looked at this episode in 2 different aspects. 1 being an Angry Video game Nerd episode the other being a great video production.

From the very first episode of The Angry Nintendo Nerd, you set the core formula. You play a really old bad video game (Sometimes talking about other stuff). For 90% of the video we see you playing the game, all the while narrating it, with some pretty hilarious profanity. That’s it, Sweet and simple. People came by the droves and you have been an internet icon ever since.

We also know that you are a film maker at heart, you love to make movies. If we take a look at the Xmas episode, production quality wise, I’d give it an A+. The music was great, the narration was great, the songs were great, and the script was great. Everything about that episode from a production standpoint was fantastic.

That’s from a production standpoint, from the standpoint of someone who is a fan AVGN nerd, I found myself bored.

I think you are trying a little too hard to make the angry video game nerd more than what it should be. Seeing how you love to make movies, I can see how temping it would be to really want to give the AVGN some spice.

At the end of the day people like to see you (The AVGN) playing a game while swearing at the tv, it’s just that simple.

So, while the latest episode looked and felt like you put a lot of work into it and from that aspect you hit it out of the ballpark. As an Angry Video Game nerd episode goes, I think it was a snooze fest. Just remember, don’t try so hard and just keep it simple 

AVGN never fails to deliver, another great episode. This fan genuinely thanks you, and everyone who put work into this one. You guys are awesome.

  • December 9, 2010 at 2:52 pm

    Dear AVGN,
First time posters LONG time viewer. I wanted to tell you that I thought this video was not up to your standards of excellence. For one thing, I would argue that although “score” doesn’t mean anything to you, it does mean something to a lot of people. I don’t think I can think of very many games where score isn’t a big deal. It’s score the separates us and gives us something to strive for. Even in the older video games, score was what made you not rush through everything and try to collect every power up. It may not matter in a game like Top Gun (NES), but it sure as heck mattered in the Kings of Kong. It sure as heck mattered in Pac-Man or Tetris. Even today, people bend over backwards for “achivment points” on Xbox live. These are just a few examples I could think of off the top of my head. I don’t need to see it adressed, I don’t need anything I just want you to be aware that to a lot of people, score does matter.

The other thing I wanted to say is the rhymes you chose were awful. The games were interesting, but the rhymes were awful.

Thank you very much for putting out the video and keep up the good work.

    December 9, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Guys you are taking this too personally, AVGN is not serious, its comedy and it’s amazing. James wears many hats, so to speak (no pun intended) and I’m sure he doesn’t really think that all score systems in NES games or whatever suck. It’s just a good laugh. Personally, I thought this was entertaining as hell and I’ve seen it 5 times already, the rhymes are clever and I think they were pulled off well. Amazing job guys!

  • Liam Gauci

    December 9, 2010 at 3:54 pm

hey James, I liked these last few eps but I would like to see the Nerd himself more often in them. I used to enjoy seeing the various reaction shots and his explosions of rage when a game pissed him off.

Lately we’ve been seeing more in-game footage than anything else and it’s making me miss the old reviews. Some people might say that the games themselves are the point of these clips but I have to disagree. I mean the show itself is called “The Angry Videogame Nerd” and I loved it when the games were used as a device to push the character over the edge and his destructive side would be set loose.

  • December 9, 2010 at 4:14 pm

So, Mike Matei, when are you going to sell these illustrations ? Because I’m thinking of getting my hands in one.

  • December 9, 2010 at 4:51 pm

    Hi, James!
Love what you do and I find a lot of your stuff inspiring and I it’s a lot because I used to do editing with VCRs and make movies when I was younger and everything + I’m a game designer and I a big retro games player. I’m working on an original MegaMan fan-game called MegaMan Unlimited. And because of that, I know that fans can put a lot of pressure on someone and they can be very demanding, even for things that they don’t have to pay a cent for. : P
Personally, I was a bit disappointed in this Christmas special. Don’t get me wrong I think the amount of work on editing, drawing and music is very impressive. (Cool pics, Mike. I laughed at the Nerd’s expressions in them. : ) But I think overall, the Christmas Carol special had more of the atmosphere I love about your videos. It covered the games more and was overall funnier to me.
Maybe it’s because I don’t really like rhymes, as they tend to annoy me more than anything. Or maybe it’s because I’m not particularly fond ot eh The Grinch. Anyway, I just wanna say that, while I criticize you’re work, I by no means consider that the show “jumped the shark” or that you shouldn’t explore new ideas. That’s what I think fans of yours should do: offer criticism, but remain open. After all, we all have different opinions. I just felt like giving my two cents. ^_^
If you ever get the chance, you should check out my little Megaman tribute to the AVGN on my youtube channel of the same name as my username here.
Keep up the great work, you are one of my inspirations to keep working on my projects. ^_^

    December 9, 2010 at 4:58 pm

There is no reason to hate on the AVGN videos, I enjoy each one he does, However this video felt like it was lacking something. I liked what he did with the rhymes even though I’m not a fan of the whole Grinch who stole Christmas parody, the pictures were funny even though James has a large ass. I do like the fact he takes a month between AVGN videos because they all seem to be better quality so keep up the good work and when are you gonna review Southpark for the N64?

  • OdieMikes

    December 9, 2010 at 5:01 pm

@efil4063xobX Perhaps you haven’t read How The Grinch Stole Christmas, or seen the movie, but it was a terrific homage. They kept the ryhme-structure nearly identical, which is harder than you think, and he still delivered nerdy complaints in an entertaining, foul-mouthed way. Don’t talk shit if you don’t know poetry. All I’m sayin’ brah.

And achievement points are different from score. Killing five zombies with one grenade is different from grinding the shit outta Super Mario Bros. for a high score to show your friends… PS3 trophies are closer (if you go for Platinum).

  • December 9, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Nice episode. It’s definitily something completely different, and though I’ve already seen some mixed reactions, I like it.
For fututr episodes I’d also like to see more actual Nerd flipping off the games et cetera 😉

Keep up the good works guys, and merry Christmas from Holland!

    December 9, 2010 at 5:35 pm

People seem to be arguing about James’ comment of score not mattering. I feel like there have been different “eras” of score importance that I am making up here:

    1. 1970’s-Early 80’s (Arcade-Style era): Console games were generally arcade ports with endless levels or no way to “beat the game.” The main measure of skill or progress was high score, which was the ultimate goal.

    2. 1984ish-Early 2000’s: (Beat-The-Final-Boss era): Console games on the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, N64, PSX etc. had clear goals for completing the game. Usually there were finite levels or objectives to complete, and there was generally a clear end point for when you were done with the game. Games still often awkwardly kept score, but this was something most players never really payed attention to. Honestly, when you were playing SMB1, how many times did you actually look at the score meter? I think this is what the Nerd was trying to get at in the video.

    3. Mid 2000’s-Present: (Online Score/Achievement era): Console games on modern systems like Xbox 360 and PS3, which have clear goals for completing the game, but also have incentives for showing off extra challenges completed, such as “achievements” or “trophies.” Because of Leaderboards, score once again matters, since you can show off your records instantaneously to the whole world. This might not matter for all games, but it does for some (i.e. Rock Band). Some players might not care at all about Leaderboards and choose to simply enjoy the process of completing the game as in era #2 above.

  • Round Cat

    December 9, 2010 at 5:49 pm

Not a bad episode, I liked it a lot.
“A well written parody of the Grinch” I thought.
You brought up a good point which I must commend,
even bad games, can be fun in the end
Not all games can be a classic or a treasure,
but at least some can be enjoyed as a guilty pleasure.
Take Super Godzilla, which you reviewed last September
I enjoy that game though its as bad as I remember.
I enjoy Ultra Man a little more than I should
and at least I thought Mega Man 8 was good.
If I ever need a laugh, I have just the thing
listen to metal gear solid while playing Sneak King.
It doesn’t always matter if a games bad or good
As long as your having fun, the game is doing what it should.

Video definitely had a lot of work done to it.. but does that mean the video was good? Well.. it didn’t feel natural whatsoever and the Mr. Nerd part of the song was too repetitive.

You need to learn why your old videos rocked and why it pummels all your current videos.

Video wasn’t worth the wait, disappointed but hey.. at least you released it on time.. oh no wait, you didn’t… Okay well thanks a lot James. Honestly, just cause you show that you did a lot of work on it DOES NOT NECESSARILY or AUTOMATICALLY make the video good.

    Learn from your mistakes.

I can’t believe anyone would complain about this episode. Besides the fact that it was awesome, you people have no right to complain about anything James Rolfe does. He makes incredible videos that we get to watch for FREE. The man works really hard to give us these FREE videos too, so whining about how his old videos were better is just dumb. Also, count me as one of those who like the newer videos better than the older ones (although the older ones were great as well).
Maybe I shouldn’t write so much, but it just annoys me so much to see people whining about decisions that James Rolfe makes about his own videos.

I purchased Mario’s Time Machine, Shaq-Fu, and Wayne’s World for my little brother this holiday season. It will be fun to see him rage at the televison screen while I sip deviously on some eggnog. Merry Christmas James, and good luck with the New Year!

Mike, #1 Great job and #2 I don’t think you needed to explain to efil4063xobX what James ment. If he or she doesn’t understand and take these entertaining videos that serious, he or she doesn’t derserve an explination. I fully understand the importants and being serious about gaming. Wether it’s a world record on Twin Galaxies or a bet you have with your friends there is a time and place for serious gaming, but James, Mike, etc.. who help us, teach us, make us laugh and remember how much fun the games are. I don’t know who you are efil4063xobX and I’m not trying to insult you either, but lighten up man! This is supposed to be fun remember?? Feel free to rant and curse me out if it makes you happy. I’m really sorry, but this is the first episode that I just could not watch. I can see it had good artistic intentions but it was neither funny nor informative. The rhyming was forced and embarrassing. Maybe it if it was just for the opening, it would have been okay. The narrator was poor and there just wasn’t enough true focus on the games.

People need to get over the fact that James didn’t focus a full review on many of these games. Mediocre (but not outright horrible) titles might have only a few flaws, so any video about them would have less potential. “Bulk” reviews like this one make more sense.

I imagine games with lots of sequels, or those with strong movie themes, are more likely to get full reviews. Perhaps Wizards and Warriors, or Robocop?

Guys, I really love your work, but the rhymes were so forced this time out. I think you should have tried to parody the spirit and not necessarily the letter of Seuss’ original. The lyrics didn’t match up with the original story’s cadence at times, but it seemed like you were trying to force it to fit even though syllables were missing or added. The best of intentions and a good effort, but it seemed like you were trying too hard to be EXACTLY like Seuss’ work but with the Nerd (and his cat 😀 ) inserted into it.

I think a takeoff on The Grinch would’ve worked better than a direct lift, maybe, but an A for effort. And for the presence of James’ poor antlered cat and the topiary of that stupid dog from Duck Hunt. 😀

I’m not saying this stuff to be a bitch- it’s just what struck me right from the first few sentences. I really would have loved to see a looser parody of Seuss’ work- I think it would be outstanding. Let me know if you decide to do a “Fox in Socks” parody, so I can keep an eye out for it! Kick Ass!

It’s sad to see so many people use these comment sections as an excuse to be the first to post or basically talk shit back and forth to each other. Maybe I’m just getting old, but whatever happened to simply saying ” it’s a good video” or ” It needs work”.
I truly liked the video, as an adult who grew up watching the Grinch every christmas, I can appreciate the rhyme scheme and animations, a lot was very creative and made me laugh. Secondly, since I can’t do any of this editing or webisode material, I’m not about to say it sucked monkey-fuck or I could do better job, it’s not my place. Despite all the negative comments I read, I’m very excited to see what is in store for next year’s AVGN. Keep up the great work, you guys at Screwattack and Cinemassacre always work hard. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidaus you guys!

Nice one, even though it wasn’t a complete review in my eyes, and the rhyme was a tad forced at times. I quite enjoyed it. It was a nice change of pace. I think it would have been better animated, but you may have gotten the idea last minute.

Man, those rhymes made me sad, to be honest with you, they were pretty bad.
Long I have waited to watch this month’s show, but I had no idea really that it would blow.
Well, I’m sorry, that was kinda rude.. But it’s not easy when you’re not in the mood.
Altho, I must confess, that artwork really made me impressed.

I have watched the original cartoon a week ago (as I do every Christmas at least twice!) so I can say that I appreciated every wink at the original show. Awesome script! And I never laughed from beginning to end as I did in this one at an AVGN so yeah, it was a GREAT one!!

I just have to say Ive been a huge fan for as long as you have been making videos to share. I can see that this video took a long time to make, a lot of hard work and creativity. Ive watched every video you have made at least ten times and I log on to your website everyday looking for a new video posted or just to see whats in the works. But with that said, this one was a big of a disappointment for me. I think you took a wrong direction with this. Dont get me wrong it was good but just not what I expected. Maybe if it was in live action or even real pictures instead of the artwork. Thanks for all the great movies, shitty games and great memories these past five years. I look forward to many more holidays with the nerd. Thanks.

Purely constructively, and I mean no rudeness, I personally didn’t enjoy this one. I am sure it was very hard to make, and many people genuinely liked it, so it was worth it. However my take on this is that AVGN is best just sitting on a couch and ranting angrily about random no name video games. Obviously nobody can expect 4 years without something one doesn’t like, so all I have to say is, all your videos are great in their own way, I watch them so many times I have started to memorize lines, keep on doing what you enjoy and happy holidays.

That was great! Very different, but still a lot of fun. Definitely will have to watch it a few times to catch all of the stuff going by. Darn though, I’ve come to realize recently that I must be in the extreme minority for liking both Punisher and T&C Surf for the NES…I know they have their flaws but I played the hell out of them back in the day.

dude…I’m sorry you posted that comment as well. You have to keep in mind that James is the producer of his series. Yes, he answers to the fans and takes suggestions, but in the end you gotta put yourself in his shoes…several interviews have indicated that he has never put so much work into this episode. Plus the fact that Bear Mcreary of all people did the score for this episode is impressive as well! It’s not just you but anyone who didn’t like this episode…I just don’t see how that’s possible.

James… I am disappointed. This episode didn’t make me laugh really. I am very frustrated at waiting a month for a video to come out only to find it sucks. Forgive the bluntness, thats how I am, but this makes 4 video’s now in a row mind you that I have watched and felt completely disappointed. I’m really starting to lose faith as a fan. I’m only really interested in the AVGN and right now I have nothing to hold on to for that. It is what drew me in the first place and I can see that sadly I may have to finally move on elsewhere for funny video’s of nostalgic gaming. I’m not looking forward to any more of your video’s I am but one fan of course but this is my heartfelt opinion.

Sorry to hear that, man. I realize that ppl like you want some of the older stuff in the AVGN videos, but the series is progressing, James Rolfe himself is growing … So is his style, changing and developing further and further… If you don’t like it, I’m sorry but we all got our own opinions. I guess this is what happens to all series — We lose some old fans, and gain some new fans.
I for one did start watch AVGN for its somewhat ‘Inappropriate Content’. However as I grow up and learn more of the world I start to want to see something else, and that’s why I stick with it.

  • Valhawk

    December 13, 2010 at 6:09 pm

To those people out there who feels James is losing it with his AVGN character, please consider this…While I do love James’ work with AVGN and all his other videos, you honestly can’t expect him to hit every video out of the park (that is by no means a negative to you James I assure you). The guy is constantly busy everyday making different videos or dealing with something video related. I admit there have been a couple of episodes that I didn’t care for myself, but I respect that James did his best with it, took the time to even do it and that’s all we can ask from him. This is just like the Family Guy holiday episode that just aired on Sunday. You people keep demanding too much and just like Santa, James will up and throw in the towel. (not saying he really will, but I’m sure you get the point)

All I’m saying is, just give him a break, while he does do this for the fans and is probably a labour of love for him, even though I’m sure he enjoys doing it anyway. It’s not something that can be thrown together in a matter of hours.

  • December 13, 2010 at 6:32 pm

This was great but damn it, Nerd, I cant believe the “and play some fucking shitty games” line at the end was spoken over Impossible Mission. And Skate or Die? Another classic. Winter Games I grudgingly give you. Yes the controls are ass, but they’re also what made these games fun. These are ports of C64 games and we expected very different things than NES gamers did. This is one I’m going to watch again and again, thanks for the xmas present!

FIST OF THE NORTH STAR! How can you not know what that is? It was a popular japanese anime/manga series back in the 80s that actually helped inspire dragon ball z. It’s like mad max and bruce lee was put together to give you Kenshiro.. fist of the north star, where he is in an apocalyptic future where cities are laid to ruin, and he wanders around alone. However, he knows martial arts, and its the kind that uses puncture points, where it can stop the movements of his enemies or can even turn a human into a ticking time bomb where they EXPLODE (hence the reason why they explode in the game).

Btw.. when are you gonna review captain planet? and ghost and goblins?? I’ve been waaaaiiittting.

That was a classic episode. To all the people who don’t like it because it wasn’t the nerd just cussing at the screen for 10 minutes, you need to realize every form of entertainment has to change or it never grows. If it doesn’t grow and change it gets forgotten.

I love the message the episode is laying out there, games even the shitty ones have their special place. Thanks to James for that.

  • LCmiracle

    December 14, 2010 at 11:42 am

Second thought, It’s been James’ dream to make movies… Now with AVGN’s success, it’s his one chance to finally try to realize that dream.
This might just be an experimental project for him, and that movie thing he said earlier is not for nothing.
I mean, guys, face the true, James is 30 now, for him this might be the only chance to do something that he’s been dreamed of.
Well, again, if you don’t like this video, you know it’s what you want to do and it’s nothing wrong with it. Sorry to see some old fans go because of this… but this is how things works

WOW James! This was awesome! This episode felt like a big “thank you” to the fans. It was very well scripted. You managed to pull a 12 minute long poem. That must took an ungodly amount of work and effort.
There are extra toppings on this video too. You pretty much reviewed a ton of games in one video.
I can’t express with words how good this episode was! It was definitely the best nerd video of the year!

All the people hating this video because it’s different from the rest,
Should piss the fuck off this shit was the best.
Mike’s art has never been better,
And James obviously put effort into every sentence, word and letter.
Because of this vid I expected all the comments to rhyme,
Its cool cus you took out tons of games that were nothing but chyme. (look it up)
    This rhyming has to stop.
I’m going to stop so I don’t kill myself.

I really loved this episode (music, artworks, lyrics, review, all), thanks a lot for this wonderful video. I appreciate the huge work of everyone worked in this video.

  • shanecf

    December 15, 2010 at 11:18 am

I didn’t like this one. I felt it didn’t have enough real interesting things to say about any of the games. This episode was just a gimmick, and I found it very boring.

Now, I’m not saying James doesn’t have a right to do whatever he wants here. It’s his “show.” But, fans like me who come here and are interested in the game review aspect don’t really care to watch 10 minutes of the grinch or bugs bunny fighting or super mecha death christ (or w/e).

Personally, I think James is at his best when he’s on topic and showing things from the game… not silly “goof off” time caught on film.

Like a few others, I also registered so I could leave a comment. Been following you close to two years but have really never felt compelled to add to the discussion. I love watching the progression of your video editing skills (as it stands, the production value is quite high) from your Nintendo Nerd days until this Christmas episode. Remarkable difference in quality.

Someone also mentioned copycats – and I agree with that commenter – the copycats pale in comparison and just don’t pull off the old-school gaming tirades with the same pizazz you do. It was like in grade school when my parents wouldn’t buy me the new Air Jordans, so I got a pair of shitty XJ-900s for Christmas. That’s what those copycats are like, trying to be a pair of Air Jordans (OK, so my metaphor doesn’t quite work).

And I like the new shift into more nuanced type of humor, not just you sitting on a couch saying shitballs every month. Even stand-up comedians have to work on new routines. I don’t think the shit and balls jokes will ever go away, as they shouldn’t since it’s part of your schtick (and very funny). What the whiners need to realize is that you’re not a one-trick pony. They’re like people who go magic shows and are impressed by the same disappearing balls gag every time. They don’t want to see a different trick.

So soldier on, buddy, because you’re on the right track. You love what you do – and that’s apparent with the work you put into your videos and on this site – and at the end of the day people like me realize that the effort hasn’t been wasted. Cock shitballs, my man! On with the show!

I dunno and I’m sure people already mentioned it but fist of the north star is a very popular manga and anime in japan about a dude who was so powerful he could just touch you with his pinky and you’d explode. I’d like to point out to the people that didn’t like this video that this isn’t a AVGN video, nor a review. Oh sure, there’s the nerd and he speaks about games and swears but that’s like your dad who would tell you he fucked your mom. (AVGN reference, lulz)

I’m not a fan of the grinch who stole christmas so I found this video to be boring but I can live with that. This is James attempt to tell a story and also re-tell what is considered by many a classic so its obvious that it will catch on with many people. At the very least, while I found this boring, I found it to be better than the previous review which could be easily considered his worst review of al time… If you’re not someone that thinks that whatever James creates is flawless.

I hope you can manage to keep your reviews fresh James because if you aren’t able to do so, I think it would be best to stop making AVGN videos and focus on your other Cinemassacre oriented projects. Seriously, I know that the AVGN earns you money and you got a contract but you better stay creative and not only rely on swearing and to be sure to actually try to play the games you’re reviewing.

To those who whines about the people that criticize James, I can only tell you to mind your own business and accept that there’s criticism for everything. Oh, its not like they can do better? You just destroy yourself with such a statement. Let me set this straight: You are complaining about people who complains about a guy that does profit on criticizing things. I rest my case.

Looking forward to your next video game review James and I am interested to see if it’ll be a fun one to watch. I hope that you and everyone else here got a enjoyable “Happy Shut The Fuck”.

This comment has been copied, pasted and saved on a word document in case this “mysteriously” disappears. I’m looking at you when I’m saying this Mr. Matei.

I generally don’t post here, but your post inspired me to register. Frankly, I couldn’t stomach your post, regardless of the fact that I’m sure you consider yourself a viable, reliable, judge-worthy critic. You’ve got some real nerve warning James Rolfe about “staying creative.” Honestly, who the hell are you and who owes you entertainment?

This isn’t a pay site, you’re not a fucking stockholder. Who owes you anything? Let James create what he wants to create – if you don’t favor it, then don’t watch that particular video again. If you think his work has gotten stale, then go back and watch his old videos ad nauseum. Or better yet, just go away. There are innumerable other fans to stand in your void when you walk out the door, so to speak.

And I have an idea of the kind of person you are: you’re sitting there, watching, clamoring outloud: “Why isn’t this the way I want it?!” Why? Because the creators aren’t you, they’re someone else…so instead of posting angrily, just go play the show you want in your own head.

True, you have a right to an opinion, but its James and Mike’s and everyone else’s right to ignore it. Besides, did you forget what James niche is all about? He’s not necessarily always taking the most serious approach to this. It’s not like he’s putting all of his efforts into dissecting the game bit by bit earnestly. The Nerd is a character. The concept is that his reviews take pieces of games, the irritating ones that gamers are sure to remember, and exploit them and verbally thrash them for our entertainment. Who honestly NEEDS a certified review of a Nintendo game?! it’s for fun, to relive some old fucking frustrating memories. The connect is that he’s spouting the vile language I (and other gamers) used to say at Top Gun and TMNT, etc.

Lastly, James, gotta say, this video was a real treat for the Grinch / Seuss rhyme angle alone. Certainly a new favorite, You’ve done some great work, but this one is definitely a notch higher.

  • December 27, 2010 at 8:53 pm

Merry Christmas guys, good job on this one. My wife still hates you James so I’m going to buy another DVD from you. When she stops hating you, your doing something wrong so keep up the good work sir.

Hm, I find it rather strange that you were offended asimovpunch. I believe I shouldn’t reply, especially since its your first time to reply and you might be unlikely to view this but I shall do so anyway due to the fact that it allows me to point out a few things to the likes of you.

I am not a professional critic, although the thought of such a thing wouldn’t be something I’d dislike. I am a viewer and I while James does not owe me anything, you would be unwise… no, foolish to believe that criticism is a wrong thing. As long as its constructive, it only serves as a mean to improve one-self but of course, there’s always some people struck by their very own ego caused by delusions due to fan praises or fear and paranoia of criticism itself. Note that I give no explicit directive to James seeing how its his own projects but I simply encourage him to stay fresh and avoid to fall into the trap of too many sources of entertainment that used very, very stupid ideas that caused their downfall although I wouldn’t say that James did such a thing so far.

Hm… It seems I have misunderstood you. You truly have no idea of how thing works. Sorry to call you this but you’re one of these tools who slowly cause the downfall of entertainment whether its games or other medias. You believe that popularity defines the quality of a product which is both hilarious and ignorant. I’ll watch it if I feel like it and its not some punk like you who will tell me what to do. I have the right to enjoy something and point out a issue. You seem to be one of these people who believes that criticism shouldn’t exist. If such a thing wouldn’t exist, there would be a strong decrease in quality. Have you seen any of James previous videos? He does know he gets some criticism sometime and while this is his vision I have no doubt that he works very hard to give a video that is high in quality. Also, he sell DVDs, so yes, it has to be good because if it isn’t successful, it won’t sell. If you think I don’t want James to succeed, then you’re completely wrong.

What are you talking about, calling me angry? You simply assume that I’m angry because I felt like giving some criticism? That’s so silly seeing the fact that you admitted you created a account out of anger to rant against me.

You’re telling me nothing new. I perfectly understand the concept of how the nerd is. But the thing is, that just relying on the same gimmick endlessly is a perfect way to jump the shark. Not every viewers are twelve years old or get easily impressed by every gimmicks that are used. Not all ideas are good and yes, I do applaud James effort to try new things but it doesn’t mean that all ideas should be used. This time he re-told a classic story which I am fine with. However, I find it quite pathetic when any reviewers thrash a game because they don’t really try or quite bluntly, suck at it. I’m not expecting a playthrough or anything like that but I enjoy when the bias is kept to a certain minimum.

Once again, while this may sound redundant since I said it last time, I must say this again:

You’re complaining (You) about a guy who criticize something (Myself) who criticize games and sometime movies as not only a way to earn money, but as the primary cause of the fame he has today (James).

Once again, I rest my case. How more idiotic could this be? Criticism is a good thing as long as its not some stupid child-calling shenanigans. If nobody cares about such criticism (Which isn’t the case, I mean, you replied to my comment so that’s a start…) and even if James himself doesn’t care about it, that’s fine and if it angers someone, remember that its not my problem.

Yes, this comment has been saved as well.

How about you let the nerd decide what HE wants to do next.. and you decide what YOU want to do next.. which is probably your hand or a crusty sock. If you don’t like his new videos then to bad. I know you will not believe me when I say this… oh great and wise ejpion…. so you might want to sit down for this… but the universe doesn’t revolve around you and you opinion isn’t the most important opinion to ever exist. So why don’t we let the creator create what he wants… instead of what the holy and worthy ejpion wants? Maybe the cursing is a gimmick, but that is what the nerd character is all about. Your like the people who complain about the Mythbusters “not being scientific enough”. Shut the fuck up! It’s entertainment for Gods sake! If you want and in depth game review that is unbiased… then you have come to the wrong site. If that is true… then Go Away.

  • justin.love93

    December 28, 2010 at 4:56 am

    First you said…
“I hope you can manage to keep your reviews fresh James because if you aren’t able to do so, I think it would be best to stop making AVGN videos and focus on your other Cinemassacre oriented projects. Seriously, I know that the AVGN earns you money and you got a contract but you better stay creative and not only rely on swearing and to be sure to actually try to play the games you’re reviewing.”

    Later you said…
“Oh also, dumbass, I never said what he should do.”

Really? I’m the dumb ass here?……….
Listen i think criticism is a good thing. I agree that people need it to improve. But the point I am trying to make is that your not giving criticism. 90% of your post was you showing how important you and your opinion is and how you saved your post in a word document (how special of you). Here is the definition of constructive criticism.

“Constructive criticism aims to show that the intent or purpose of something is better served by an alternative approach. In this case, the target of criticism is not necessarily deemed wrong, and its purpose is respected; rather, it is claimed that the same goal could be better achieved via a different route.”

This is probably the type of criticism you were aiming for.. being that you want to see a better product, but I want you to notice the most important part.

“rather, it is claimed that the same goal could be better achieved via a different route.

Now the only suggestions you made were for him to play the games more that he is reviewing. or in your words..”to be sure to actually try to play the games you’re reviewing.”

So that small fraction of your post had a good spark of criticism. The rest of it is your opinion… and like I said before… your not the all might worthy one. Go ahead and make suggestions on how he can do things better… because thats useful. But don’t come here… spill your ignorance.. and share how important you are with us. Just leave some ideas how he can do things better.

“You’re complaining (You) about a guy who criticize something (Myself) who criticize games and sometime movies as not only a way to earn money, but as the primary cause of the fame he has today (James).”

“You whine about some who criticizes someone that criticizes things as a career.”

Im complaning about you being a pompous arrogant ass.

I loved this, as How the Grinch Stole Christmas is one of my all-time favorite Christmas specials., so seeing your take on this was really cool. I feel you did a good job with this, and I’m sure Mike was very busy with the drawings for this one.

I can’t wait to see what you come up with next, whether it be another AVGN video or something that is non AVGN oriented.

ejpion: IMO, your review did come across as more opinionated as opposed to giving actual constructive criticism. It did come across as, “This is what I like, do it my way” as opposed to offering alternatives. I know you said it wasn’t your intention, but that’s just how it came across. In all honesty, there are some reviews I didn’t care for (like the Lester the Lame [whatever it was called] one…I just like the fact he introduced us to the actual game). The reviews I favor most, are the ones dealing with the actual gaming systems . I still wish he’d do something on R.O.B for the NES. I didn’t know anyone who actually had one, so it’d be cool to see him do something on it…finally.

    @ ejpion

Just had to sign up to tell the haters that ejpion’s criticism is totally spot on. I’m a huge AVGN fan and a part of me died when he only made an episode bimonthly. But the story and the rhymes really didn’t work. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard of shows, movies, videos, and blah blah that do these kinds of things like using an old story and putting in overused rhymes (ok, not really but a few). And no why would we not watch this video and watch previous vids? I’ve pretty much seen every AVGN video like 2-3 times.
