Back to the Future timeline

It’s always fun to look at a chart detailing the Back to the Future timeline. If you haven’t seen this, definitely check it out.

That’s awsome, cool to see how they explain each timeline accurate, But I’m still confused with all the DeLorean’s in 1955.

my only problem with the trilogy is this.
If old biff traveled back in time and changed the events making young biff rich, how could old biff travel forward in time to his original timeline?
If old biff was to travel forward to his own time, he should of went to an alternate version and not the one marty and doc were in.

Do you ever think that the original timeline still exists in another dimension, and that Marty’s family probably misses him very much?

lol, Good thing it’s just a movie.

True, I had the same “problem”. The timeline chart tries to give an explanation for it, but it doesn’t really succeed in doing so. Still a great series of movies and a fun chart to read though.

Actually if you bought the trilogy box set on the third disc there is a nice long explanation of the whole timeline theory in the special features Q&A. It’s very well written and explains it all nicely.

Okay now I REALLY need to watch these movies again. Also I guess it explains why all the objects in BTTF II and III for the NES.

Time ripples move at the speed of plot 🙂

A bigger problem, when Marty and Jennifer travel from 1985 to 2015, their older selfs are there too! They should have travelled to a future where the two had mysteriously disappeared in 1985.

  • November 15, 2010 at 6:27 am

Great! Biff going from 1985 to 2015 is finally explained! I always considered it a mistake, but it is not!
Travelling back in time he created an alternate Hill Valley where he is rich as shit in the 80s, but he would have died in the 90s, so the 2010s are almost the same in both universes! Being time travelers, Marty and Doc’s memories are not erased, so when Biff returns to 2015 they ARE in the timeline where he have been rich in the 80s, but they don’t get the difference.
Now the only problem, that’s very rarely considered, is the one bend3r stated: In 2015 as seen in Part II Marty and Jennifer shouldn’t exist!

I’ve already seen this timeline on the regular Wikipedia, but I DO love the way it’s done. …I love being a nerd. B)

The only thing that ever bothered me about the series was in the third movie when Marty travels back to 1885. His great (great?) grandmother wouldn’t have looked like his mother unless there’s some serious inbreeding going on.

I have a question?after number 1 doc leaves to 2015 right there is no doc between 1985 and 2015??then why in number two when Marty leaves from 1985 to 2015 there is an older him and he has kids, he just jumped 30 years he didn’t exist in that time period so why would he be in 2015 as old him , he left in 1985 so there would be no Marty between 1985 and 2015 so why is he there??

The true answer to that question is bad writing. The first movie was made with no intention of making squeal let alone a trilogy. When they came back to work on the second movie they realised they had written themselves into a major plot hole, but just ignored it and moved on. It’s weird because almost no one ever points it out 🙂

@bend3r and why if biff went to the past in 2015 gave the book to biff 1955 why did the future not change by the time old biff got back??i know like you said bad writing but it really bugs me =(

They didn’t forget about Marty and Jen leaving 1985 to not exist in 2015. They simply said 2015 Marty and Jen already returned. So they will always exist in 2015. Even if the past selves leave it.

I was suspicious of this chart at first and though I could smell boom, but am going to check it out

Very interesting. Confusing and clarifying at the same time.
