    October 21, 2010 at 3:01 am

Nice! I’ve been hoping for you to review Critters ever since your Gremlins review.

  • October 21, 2010 at 3:05 am

    Hey James,

i’ve found a movie called vampire girl vs. frankenstein girl a japanese film i highly reccomend you to check it out if you are still looking for a dracula frankenstein battle the film is not that bad! and there’s an epic battle at the end imd blink here
the only sad thing is that it’s not actually dracula but at least a vampire girl as the title says and theres even a spoof on the american grudge movie in it!

  • October 21, 2010 at 3:13 am

I liked the second one more. Haven’t seen 3 or 4.

  • Jesky

    October 21, 2010 at 3:16 am

Ive been waiting for this one!

  • October 21, 2010 at 3:18 am

This was one of my favorites as a kid. I remember seeing all of them and they were quite bad ass.. I loved them.. except for 4… 4 was terrible..

I am surprised James hasn’t done Troll 2 yet.

  • DannyD

    October 21, 2010 at 3:21 am

    October 21, 2010 at 4:18 am

Critters is a good movie, this movie was actually in production before Gremlins was in production even though Gremlins was released before Critters.

  • GoldRoger

    October 21, 2010 at 4:35 am

haha Rafael watched the movie in TMNT

  • chrissinewman

    October 21, 2010 at 4:43 am

In the German version of TMNT Raphael says: “Critters … schon 16-mal gesehen und nicht einmal gelacht … !” What means:”Critters … Seen already 16 times and laughed not even one time … !

  • Terthoran

    October 21, 2010 at 4:46 am

I never liked these Critters movies, Gremlins was a million times better!

  • horrorfanboy

“Where do they come up with stuff?”
Exactly. Hope to find this movie. It was made by New Line Cinema in the wake of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. I too hope Killer Klowns is next.

    October 21, 2010 at 6:41 am

    the critters were the shit!!!

I always remember the scene where the critters form into a massive rolling ball and eat everything in their path, including one guy who couldn’t run fast enough!! One minute he is trying to escape and after the critters roll over him, he’s just a skeleton, but he is still wearing all his clothes!!!

    the cartoonish elements were great

  • lfgubrs

    October 21, 2010 at 6:53 am

Well done again James! I loved the end with Raphael xD

  • Imgema

    October 21, 2010 at 7:11 am

i liked critters movies more than gremlins because they were more violent and dark. And the monsters were a bit scarier.

I also liked the catchy song, but yes, it can be tiresome.

  • Jeremy E

    October 21, 2010 at 7:32 am

I only saw the third one. It has Leonardo Dicaprio…and it sucks.

  • October 21, 2010 at 7:38 am

When I was kid I like this movie very much

  • Phill6

    October 21, 2010 at 7:48 am

This is One of my favorite Guilty pleasure movies,
I Loved this when I was a Kid because It was probably my first horror movie, very fond of this, I know now it seems cheesy and funny but Everybody I knew thought it was a good movie,
This one is Way better than Transylvania 6-5000,
I remember seeing the second one, and I love how one of the alien hunters turn into a Blond girl with big boobs 🙂 lol, Great Review, but, Harsh, this is really cool movie, it’s really funny, Is cool to hear the Chiodo brothers made the effects, I didn’t know that’s really cool.
I also think that the song in Back to the Future Sucks ass

If Anyone Wants to see this, This movie is on youtube, so you can watch it,

killer kowns killer klowns killer klowns from outer space!!

  • arklon

    October 21, 2010 at 7:53 am

Guilty Pleasure? No, its just a good and fun monster movie from the 80’s. I loved it and its sequel back then and I still do now.

  • kryten2000

    October 21, 2010 at 8:19 am

What is the name of that black and white movie during the Monster Master Introduction? That is the second time I have seen it. Looks pretty disturbing.

  • kryten2000

    October 21, 2010 at 8:20 am

    I meant Monster Madness

  • October 21, 2010 at 9:11 am

I had one of those E.T dolls as well. I think I was pretty attached to it back then but now when I think back, I only remember how lifeless and plastic it was. :s

  • super3dcow

    October 21, 2010 at 10:03 am

Odd Fact. My dad was friends with the Chiodo Bros in college. They don’t talk much anymore, but my dad went to their studio a few years ago, and saw all the cool stuff they had done recently. This and Killer Clowns are memorable movies from when I was younger. Great review.

  • DT2

    October 21, 2010 at 10:19 am

That movie is a classic…. can’t say much for the others though.

  • Peter Beck

    October 21, 2010 at 10:22 am

Like you said in your video, as a kid of the 80s I was aware of it but never saw it until Space (Canadian equivalent of the Sci-Fi Network) did a week long marathon of them, managed to catch the 3rd and 4th ones.

Thinking back about the 4th one, being Critters in space, there are a lot of horror movies that go to space around their 4th sequel; Critters, Leprechaun, Hellraiser… Jason took 10 sequels to get to space, the slow moving bastard.

Kinda wonder if it’s some sort of rule of thumb that you go to space when you pass 3 parts of your series. Shame there’s no rule that you go “to the hood” in your fourth like Leprechaun, would liked to see Pinhead with cornrows…

  • sirkos

    October 21, 2010 at 11:06 am

its like the movie gremlins but more eviler 😛
the gremlins are way cuter then these things

  • Ohhsnap54

    October 21, 2010 at 12:18 pm

Critters 1 and 2 were awesome movies

  • October 21, 2010 at 12:24 pm

James, I’m the same age as you. So I like the reviews. I was never allowed to watch half of these films when I was younger, but my friend’s parents were a bit more…lenient, so I’d see all these films at his house. Then go home and have nightmares. 😀 Good times!

  • October 21, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Critters. Haha! Do you remember Boglins?

Garbage Pail Kids?? Sick twisted shit! 😀

  • Gonzalo_vm

    October 21, 2010 at 12:51 pm

awesome movie i watch this a thousand times!!!

  • October 21, 2010 at 1:03 pm

Did you guys ever see the movie “Munchies”? Now there was a P.O.S. Gremlins ripoff for you. Maybe James can get around to reviewing that in Monster Madness 2017.

  • Neonice

    October 21, 2010 at 1:05 pm

Hey James, since you like the horror genre so much, maybe you should give the movie SINT a try. It’s a dutch zombie movie about Saint Nicholas. (the dutch santa) It will be released this december xD

If you like horror movies with vamps and stuff, you should see the 1979 film, Salem’s Lot!
It has some damn scary scenes, and was based on a Stephen King book.

  • October 21, 2010 at 2:01 pm

You wanna talk “little monster on the loose movies that sprouted in the wake of Gremlins”?

Definitely inferior to both Critters and Gremlins, but I have a soft spot in my heart for it all the same.

Hey, man! I love “Power of the Night.” It’s like Critters distilled. I can just hear that song and instantly the whole movie flashes through my mind. That’s awesome.

Raphael ftw… but he’s way off this time. Critters is great. Especially the first and last ones. The second one, though it is most closely tied to the first, I would say is the weakest. Maybe because it feels like such a tepid retread. The third one has Leonardo DiCaprio which is pretty funny, and I like the apartment building setting. Reminds me of “Batteries Not Included.”

Critters 4, imo, is the undisputed best of the series. Which is hilarious because most franchises, when they go to outer space, you know that it’s all over. Not Critters 4, though!

For one thing, it makes sense that it goes to outer space. That’s where the story started. Secondly, Brad Dourif. He’s AWESOME in Critters 4. The writing seems a lot better, and I love the way they’ve taken the “dirty future” concepts from Alien and just cranked it to the max. It really draws from the best in sci-fi/horror without feeling like too much of a ripoff.

Finally, seeing Charlie and Ugg’s final confrontation is a big payoff for being a fan of the whole series. Four movies is a really nice length, and I hope they leave it at that. As far as I can see, there’s really nothing more for them to add to it.

  • Bandiger

    October 21, 2010 at 3:20 pm

LOL I say this movie when I was 8 back in 1988. LOL

  • October 21, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Love Critters! I even like Critters 2 more. The huge Critter ball of death is awesome.

  • Squall85

    October 21, 2010 at 4:19 pm

Whoa, critters! I liked this movie. I saw it on TV when I was a kid, they aired all four episodes week after week. I liked all four, but I felt that the fourth is a little odd, I better liked the first 3. Oh, and there’s the little Leonardo DiCaprio 🙂

  • Riknight36

    October 21, 2010 at 4:23 pm

@NinjaKItty, he did “Dead Alive” (Or, “Brain dead” as it’s sometimes called) on the first Monster Madness. What I’m HOPING he does (Tomorrow, perhaps, since it came out in 1987), is Pete Jackson’s first picture, “Bad Taste.” I love that film SO much more than “Dead Alive”. It’s funnier.

  • JayRam

    October 21, 2010 at 4:45 pm

How ironic it is Raphael is saying “where do they come up with this stuff” about critters.

  • MechaMario86

    October 21, 2010 at 5:26 pm

The first thing that popped up in my head when I saw u were doing critters was, “hmm knowing james he will use that clip from the first teenage mutant ninja turtles movie”, and low and behold. Awesome review as always.

Hey James, I pretty sure the Chiodo Bros. are even more famous for creating the puppets for Team America.

  • Schloss Ritter

    October 22, 2010 at 8:31 am

I knew this one was coming as soon as I saw the shot in the intro of one of the other Monster Madness vids.

Seeing this footage again reminds me of the monster design used later in The Langoliers.

  • October 22, 2010 at 10:34 am

“Power of the Night” sounds like it should be played through a “Rocky IV” montage.

Oh, and I also had that E.T. doll. I have no idea what happened to it.

I just bought all 4 Critters movies on on DVD set…I did this mainly because it was $10 and I was in one of those moods. While my wife only found amusement in the “FUCK!” part of the movie, I laughed hysterically when Billy Zane got eaten.

Also, on that same trip to Best Buy where I acquired these masterpieces of film, I also got the Russell Crowe “Robin Hood” Movie. We watched both “Critters” and “Robin Hood” when we got home, and I lauged even harder when I saw that the Character of Will Scarlet is the same actor who was the little Red-Headed kid in Critters.

Best part of Critters 2, was when the bountyhunter morphs into a Playboy centerfold, and his/her tits rip their way out of the uniform. (I love 80’s tits movies.) Then she pulls the staple out of her belly. :-p

And yeah, I had that E.T. too. 🙂

Man i love this movie, it was the first creature feature i was allowed to see and i scraed of anything small brown and around for a month, and before i was watching scifi original movies or Syfy now and i loved it. • BHOverdos

    July 6, 2011 at 6:57 pm

Tremors Series(or just the first one im good with that), Predator, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Aliens(because the second one kicks the first ones ass), and maybe the Twilight Zone movie should be reviewed as soon as possible. Also some newer movie like the Ring, Grudge and the mockumentary films such as the Blair Witch Project and especially Cloverfield. Keep on keepin’ on James

That man-eating, tag team critter ball from the second movie legitimately freaked me out as a kid. I just remembering the leaving of it’s feeding frenzy after rolling over some poor guy. His skeleton, still with a few ragged shreds of meat hanging from the bones, lay there convulsing and this had a potent effect on me.

Those 80’s effects with their physical props were so visceral…so routinely dysmorphic…modern gore just doesn’t get it done right without the puppets and fake skin and putty.
