This is your best AVGN since 2009. You give a history lesson, you swear, and it’s all funny. The swearing and rage is what makes your show. Never let that die out. I can’t wait for your next AVGN, especially after that cliffhanger.

    September 3, 2010 at 9:23 pm

The revisit is nice but try to keep fresh content in there like ya did with this one ;). I don’t think I would have liked it as much if there was the fresh Back to the Future game reviews. Oddly enough in spite of this being like 4x as long as normal episodes it has way less anger and shit (I mean shit literally) which I like, with shit jokes a little goes a long way.

  • Butch Bitch

    September 3, 2010 at 9:23 pm

Fuck yeah, James, this episode kicked ASS! What a way to start my Labor Day weekend. That Japanese Back To The Future game looked awesome! My favorite parts were when you were playing the game and you were like “My love!”….or something like that. I laughed so hard when you called the number on the Roger Rabbit. Guess who’s going to be calling them tonight? 🙂

  • NecroMaster

    September 3, 2010 at 9:23 pm

It is DR. Jekyll. Who else would have that suit. Can’t think of anyone else who would have it.

  • owamon

    September 3, 2010 at 9:27 pm

All I gotta say is… this was FUCKIN’ AWESOME!! Remembering all the good stuff from the past, even hearing that horrid theme from BTTF on NES. Oh god I still have the cartridge and that piece of crap tortured my childhood like no other thing!
I never pass the cafe stage, it was… cool to see the game actually continues. And boy was it a surprise to see that japanese BTTF game, never heard of it, wish I could play it.

Anyway, great job James, you are the best!

    September 3, 2010 at 9:28 pm

The first time I saw the Roger Rabbit review I called that number. I was like, Wow….and then I laughed. Great Episode. 🙂

  • You Can Just Walk Over It

    September 3, 2010 at 9:29 pm

Wow… the music from Super Back to the Future II had me CRYING thanks to the Nerd’s expressions as the game footage was being shown. Biff’s face at the end of the tunnel scene… perfect. One of those super bittersweet things like the Godzilla games on Super Famicom or ps2/xbox.

The title cards for the other NES games were also very good. The Roger Rabbit one was extremely good but needs a close up scan since it was so packed.

I forgot about the technodrome fight from the turtles game but remember Shredder had an instant kill attack that would turn you back into a regular turtle. It was hard enough to make it that far let alone beat the game. Definitely a game genie game for that last level.

Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is probably *the* game that had the least footage shown but talked about the most many years after. Since next month is halloween I’d say there’s a STRONG chance that’s the next video.

  • Cogdill

    September 3, 2010 at 9:31 pm

I have an idea of what the nest one is but i aint given it away

  • September 3, 2010 at 9:33 pm

My Favirouts BTTF games are on the C64 and Amiga. Check them out BTTF 1 is so strange its cool and once you figure out how to play it you can beat the whole thing in 2 min. BTTF 2 is close to the movie and so is 3 but easier than the megadrive (Genesis) version the last level on the train is wicked!

  • WillWill

    September 3, 2010 at 9:34 pm

    James, dude!

This is by far the best episode of the year, if not, EVER! I truly mean that as well.

It took all of the maturity you’ve garnered over the 90 plus episodes, and added the charm of the “Raging Nerd” along side.

    Comedic gold.

I could actually FEEL your rage and pain at certain moments. It was a masterpiece in my opinion. Well done, sir, Well done..

Thanks so much for making such high quality, amazingly funny shit. I really look forward to it. 🙂

I’m always thoroughly entertained when watching your videos.
You have a way of putting me in a child like state to an extent, or rather, the state in which you welcome entertainment in a relaxed atmosphere.
I haven’t felt it much since childhood.
Keep doing what you want to do in film, you’re obviously gifted, and I’ll keep lookin’ out for James Rolfe when the credits roll

  • Cless Aileron

    September 3, 2010 at 9:42 pm

Really loved this revisit to the Back to the Future games. Just as funny as the old version.

I was actually caught off guard when you pulled out Super Back to the Future II for the Super Famicom. I didn’t expect you to pull it out but I did know of its existence. I mean, I should be aware of its existence. I actually did play it as a kid. Yeah, I actually did find it decent when I played it as a kid. Though I was expecting a joke regarding the line Marty said in the third movie about how, “The best stuff come from Japan.” In this case, it seems like the best/good Back to the Future game came from Japan. Though the best title might be dropped if the Back to the Future adventure game being made ends up being good.

  • Undertaker

    September 3, 2010 at 9:43 pm

um after about 15 minutes or so the vid goes to hell for me. anyone else have that problem. to b more specific a magnetic looking line appears and takes up half the screen

Heh that was the best avgn Ive seen in awhile man that was a long review almost as long as Action 52 but what other game is he going to go back to review?

  • xeoneex

    September 3, 2010 at 9:49 pm

Believe it or not, there was a Back to the Future 2 and 3 for the Commodore Amiga, and they were 10x better than the NES version. Kinda makes you wonder.

Purple Jacket = Dr Jeklye, Mr. hyde D:

  • September 3, 2010 at 9:51 pm

Lmao!! Loved the insults at the end, this is one of your best episodes. Hopefully your next revisit isn’t the abomination that is Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde but from your reaction its going to be. Actually played that game and passed the first area but didn’t know what to do afterwards

btw… I think I spotted your plane b4 in NYC lol

  • Retrogamer1988

    September 3, 2010 at 9:51 pm

Yes james very kick ass and hilarious xD omg I laughed my ass off in some parts. Keep it up, looking forward to the “mystery” game. =)

  • September 3, 2010 at 9:52 pm

OH MY GOD!!! Thank you for re-reviewing those games! It’s so funny because I thought your classic videos were REALLY good, and to be honest, I never even thought about that stuff you skipped over. It only reminded me how bad those games really were.

And I can’t believe there was a GOOD Back to the Future game! Man!

And……..if you’re going to review what I think you’re going to re-review……………..I’m truly sorry that you will have to go through the abomination again. My thoughts and prayers will be with you AVGN.

  • Bloodhavoc

    September 3, 2010 at 9:54 pm

awesome video, James…. got my wife and I rolling laughing our asses off. Please dear God tell me your not going to subject yourself to Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde again? You should review something that won’t make you want to shoot yourself, like E.T…… wait a minute, on second thought, nevermind.

  • redmonth123

    September 3, 2010 at 9:54 pm

I think Dr. Jekyle and Mr. Hyde would ne interesting to see revisited, but I always think the original one as an AVGN classic and even though it didn’t talk about much, it was perfect.

    September 3, 2010 at 9:55 pm

Awesome review, the games before Back to the Future were fast but still fun to watch. It seems like Japan likes to keep some pretty good or awesome game and take a shit on North American gamers whenever they get a fucking chance.

The ending had Dr Jekyll & Mister Hyde written all over it. I played the game, its not the worst I played but dear goodness, what a abomination. Oh, you played Back To The Future… Now that I think of it… Does it mean you had a buffalo take a diarrhea dump in your ear before playing it?

    September 3, 2010 at 10:03 pm

I was so excited to see this, especially after you posted the link to the 25th reunion. There really is nothing like BTTF, it’s so magical, and the movie is just great from start to finish. The NES game was my introduction to LJN when I was younger and it taught me the burden of wasting a birthday wish. Thank you for going back, I could watch hours of that. I don’t know about you, but I want to save my pennies to get the replica BTTF 2 jacket and shoes and go out for Halloween 2015 in the bars and such, with my pockets sticking out, saying, “Where am I?”

  • September 3, 2010 at 10:07 pm

Nice video once again nerd, never think you can stop my hunger of more videos from you.

Been waiting 10 hours now for this episode.. no joke, 5:06 AM where I live
Also, Dr.Jekyll and Mr Hyde will be a blast to see next episode, gawd I hate that fucking game!

    Cheers nerd

P.S. Let a cow take a shit on that game at the end of next episode

“Fucking processing! Stop being so BLAST!”

This was my favorite line. Ah, Blast Processing. What a load of bullshit, haha. This video was perfect as I just re-watched a lot of your older videos today. Awesome.

  • September 3, 2010 at 10:15 pm

I think it should be action 52 that he /you want to revisit. That’s the one the should be so bad that you dont want to think about it

  • September 3, 2010 at 10:16 pm

Nice job, it was good to see more about the older game reviews!
    Check this shit out!

  • StrongStyle81

    September 3, 2010 at 10:21 pm

“um after about 15 minutes or so the vid goes to hell for me. anyone else have that problem. to b more specific a magnetic looking line appears and takes up half the screen”

Same thing happened to me, right when Back to the Future 3 for the genesis came on the screen went to hell.

Still, the rant at the end was gold. What a travesty that game was never released stateside, it looked pretty good. LJN probably had exclusive North American rights on the Nintendo and SNES or something. LJN was a fucking plague on the early video game industry.

  • Jigglysaint

    September 3, 2010 at 10:25 pm

I think sometimes the best way to go forward is by first going back. To go back to those old reviews and tie up loose ends feels like justice is done. It’s like when I try to re-visit old places from my childhood. I would stand or sit on the spot an event in my life took place, and reflect on what happened, and how it made me who I am today.

This review is like a troubled spirit that is finally being put to rest. Hopefully for next time, we will REALLY get to see whether those weapons don’t do anything or not.

  • Lavargian

    September 3, 2010 at 10:32 pm

The next just has to be Dr. Jekyll and My. Hyde. It only makes sense, especially since the next video comes out in October, and that means that it has to be a Halloween video (if it goes with the trend of previous years). I just hope the Nerd doesn’t wait until October 31st to release the video…because that would be the shits.

  • September 3, 2010 at 10:36 pm

  • CrippleMessiah

    September 3, 2010 at 10:37 pm

Awesome episode. Mike, I am in awe with your title cards. The new Roger Rabbit one is amazing. I was hoping you would bring up Back to the Future 3 on Sega. I remember renting that horrible game and ruining a weekend on that damn first level.

And since everyone is guessing on the next episode and saying Dr.Jekyll and Mr Hyde Im gonna say it’ll be Friday the 13th. Jason was wearing purple and that review was brought up in this episode. Just a thought.

  • Mariusz69

    September 3, 2010 at 10:38 pm

James you should get a goddamn Emmy for this episode. It’s a masterpiece. Great editing, great pacing. And Kudos to Motherfucker Mike for his AWESOME artwork on the titlecards for each game. Congrats James.

  • September 3, 2010 at 10:43 pm

    :O …..yessss

  • Lavargian

    September 3, 2010 at 10:46 pm

I think the first four Halloween reviews were masterpieces, they should be left alone. Just think about what the review for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was. All it was, was James complaining about how bad he thought it was, and not wanting to play it. Then he decided to pop it in and show us the first few seconds of the game. He dies once, and then shuts it off and proceeds to try and get rid of the memory of the game by soaking his brain in Alcohol. I am sure there is so much more to why that game is so bad, and trust me there is. I actually went out and found it, and there are a lot more layers of shit buried under the shit covered surface of this game.

  • jollygreen12

    September 3, 2010 at 10:49 pm

I hope it’s not that Cheetamen game. You’ve already done about as much as you could with that one. My other guesses would be either Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or the Silver Surfer.

  • September 3, 2010 at 10:54 pm

    Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?

Anyways, really great video, James. Yeah, there were some times where I wanted to see a bit more of these games without going through the trouble of playing it myself. You play it, so we don’t have to… why does that sound familiar? \:-|

Ha ha you made fun of George Lucas. Great video, it was awesome to see the rest of the levels of the games that you could beat. Also, have you ever consider making a special episode about the Japanese games we never saw over here? There might be some goodies. ^^

  • Hallwings

    September 3, 2010 at 11:05 pm

Awesome episode, man! I have a feeling that October’s episode is going to involve the a certain doctor.

Oh, and since you’ve used both the original Famicom and the Super Famicom in your reviews, have you ever thought about doing an episode which compares the Japanese and American versions of video games (oh, and have you found the RAM cartridge for the Famicom Disk System yet)?

The Nerd already re-reviewed Simon’s Quest in his 2009 Castlevania Part 2 review. The only logical answer is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Besides, He did the last Halloween special on Castlevania. I’m putting my foot down…It is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde!

I’m still waiting on the Atari E.T. review, he could unload on that pile! The day that comes will be an epic day indeed!

I got goosebumps when I saw the good version of BTTF….I got the first NES version as a birthday present. I wondered for a while if my parents hated me or something cuz that game blows so much old man weener. I pretty much suck at vid games anyway, so it’s nice to see you suffering through the horrid bullshit of LJN and other game publishers who ruined several of my weekend rentals back in the 80’s and 90’s. Love the movie and game reviews on this site even if I haven’t seen or played them so keep ’em coming, but take time to enjoy enjoy the good shit James!

Awesome episode, James! The rage attack was hilarious, and it reminded me of the good ol’ episodes.

And OF COURSE the next episode is gonna be Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! Can’t fucking wait! 😀 😀

  • September 3, 2010 at 11:57 pm

Superb video, I quite like the idea of you looking back on your older videos. And using an older version of the theme song was a nice touch. Can’t wait for your next episode, it should be really cool if it’s what I’m thinking (and apparently everyone else is thinking the same thing).

The “Nerd shot first” reference was awesome. Don’t know if everyone will get it (mostly the younger audience), but I laughed at it.

About Top Gun… I always wondered why you had trouble landing, since, the first time I played iy (bought it last year), I got it on the first try, without even paying attention to the numbers (I didn’t actually see them). But seeing it cleared up is great.

I can’t be the only one who finds that Jessica Rabbit’s phone number leading to a sex hotline is incredibly fitting… right? RIGHT?

Love the green TMNT cartridge. Seems like the same type of cart as Battle Kid… hmmm.

Loved the BTTF part as a whole. Didn’t expect BTTF 2&3 game to be that bad because of what you originally showed, but now that you properly described it, holy shit… I’m happy I didn’t buy THAT one (at least the first one is… sort of okay-ish… well, it was more self-explanatory at least). Would have loved to see the other levels on the genesis game though (but I don’t blame you if it was just too hard).

And I just KNEW you’d be showing the Super Famicom game, though I would have loved to see you elaborate a bit more on it… But at least the gameplay you showed for it did show that it was a really good game that followed the movie well.

Very well done video. Your work has been lacking that same charm of your older videos, but that is rectified here. I always did find it disappointing how you quit early on your old videos and loved it when you revisited Simon’s Quest. Nice to see the finished versions of those reviews. =D

    September 4, 2010 at 12:26 am

This is easily the best episode you have produced to date. The fact being that the writing is a lot smoother, wittier, clever, and the dialogue is substantially less awkward compared to your earlier videos. Your editing has reached a mastery as well, the timing of jokes is spot-on to say the least and the effects look a lot cleaner (Even you make a joke about this.)
The 2010 season is proving to be the best one and I’m happy to be a fan, always up for an opportunity to help.

    Keep up the good work,

Awesome review, I AM DYING TO SEE DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE!!!

But James my great entertainer, as soon as you review the Genesis BTTF 3, the Green Gaming Glitch Goblin attacks. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that in a certain part of the video (I rewound,) it starts glitching. I’ll haft to watch this another time. I have no idea what happened.

But… hey wait a minute… looks like water in that beer bottle… whats up with that?

  • September 4, 2010 at 12:51 am

And The Other Thing – I see what you’re doing by mocking George Lucas (who is not a Jew.) But if you were to take the original episodes and, maybe not even better effects, but make them look crisper and cleaner, I don’t think it would be too bad. Seeing the “new” effects you did for those episodes, I’d actually like to see them, since they don’t destroy the original effects, and only enhance ’em.

And The Jason skit, now that was funny. Especially because Jason didn’t even have a gun. Han shot first, we all know that for a sure sign.

idk why this is, but I cannot pause the video. I had to do something and come back to watch… instead I had to close everything and then start all over again… Can this be fixed? it’s a tad inconvenient.. FANTASTIC re-review though! ^^

    September 4, 2010 at 1:57 am

I can’t seem to view the last 5 minutes of the video. Is there a way I can view these videos in a way that it wount make a Green Glitchy Line across the video? Same thing happend in the Action 52 Vid. I mean I want to be able to see the “Shitty Games” as they really are, not with more shittyness due to a Vid Playback problem.

Wow, James, it’s a good thing you did decide to make these monthly instead of bi-weekly. The quality of the episodes now is significantly improved. They’re longer, more rich with content, and the subjects of the reviews themselves are worth waiting a month for. And I like how you gave us a cliff hanger on this one, even though it’s pretty obvious what the next game is (Jekyl and Hyde). 😛

Keep up the good work, these reviews are fantastic! Definitely worth the wait!

I started watching your videos back in 2006, and I remember the first review I watched was McKids. This episode was like a nostalgic trip for me. Kind of like someone talking about those classic cartoons or video games you played as a child, then exploding in a nostalgic gorefest.
I bet the next review’s gonna be Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde. Fucking awesome.

Also, what a perfect summary of LJN.

as a guess Dr.J & Mr. H is one you left inconclusive cause you got pissed off! and I think you were kind of drunk at that moment! so Why don’t you outsource the game play include the guy in your video and make fun of him as a masochist retarded or something like that?

A little more James the film maker is peeking through the Nerd than usual.
I liked these expanded reviews. You got a lot of good material out of them you didn’t the first time.
Why did I phrase that like James is going to read this?

Hm, ‘Don’t want to say it or play it, but thinking it’. Not wanting to play it doesn’t narrow it down much. Neither does the body with the covered face on the card. Something to do with thought? Whats Latin for thought? I’ve got it! He’s probably not The Riddler! Probably.
I kind of hope its Wally Bear and The No Gang but its almost certainly Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

James, we need to have a higher frequency of AVGN episodes, I mean board James and YKWBS are interesting but that aren’t up to the standard that AVGN set, and everything else is basically a vlog, and I don’t like how cinemassacre is degenerating into a vlogsite.

I know it might be hard to do an AVGN episode but its your primary breadwinner.

I’m excited which game could it be in the next episode (maybe Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde?).

At least I have one question: What’s about E.T. on Atari in the rest of this year or maybe in the 100th episode?

In conclusion: One of the best. And I’m looking forward to the next episode.

    September 4, 2010 at 8:40 am

Epic episode, specially the part with the Super BTTF2 on Super Famicon.

I liked the references, specially the ones of Star Wars at the beginning, good stuff.

I wish you could finish TMNT, Shredder is pretty easy with the trick (kind of the same trick as when you fight Rocksteady, but this time you can take anyone and you must go to the far right of the screen and then push slightly to the left so you can face Shredder, you might have to kneel tho, it’s been a while so I don’t remember exactly.

Anyway, really great episode James, keep up the good work!

Fucking Awesome!! As you, i always felt some games needed a more “in-depth” review. I particularly liked the Star Wars reference on the scene you edit, the part when you shoot Jason in the head. I don’t now if anyone else note is it, i won’t read all the comments to be sure of it. A apologize for the bad, crapy English, I’m from Argentina, and my spoken English isn’t bad, but when it comes too write, O god I suck monkey fucks!! Good luck, keep doing what you do, I’ll wait for your next video. ByE ByE

  • September 4, 2010 at 1:53 pm

James, Japan used to keep all the greatest games for themselves, at least for a while. Super Back to the Future 2, the PC Engine Dracula X, the list goes on and on. Now, we’re seeing some of the best games being made by studios in Europe and here in the states, and we like to share, so it’s all good. Great video tho, definitely a must see for anyone who suffered through these games as a kid.

    September 4, 2010 at 3:19 pm

James, this was great, back when I saw your original Back to the Future review, I remember thinking about that Genesis BttF3 game, that first level is impossible! Its like they took all the mine cart levels from all the Donkey Kong Country games, put them in a blender with the boulder chase level from Indiana Jones Greatest Adventures, and then shit in the blender while it was turned on. And then cranked up the difficulty. Can’t wait to see the in-depth Jekyll & Hyde Review, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you’re gonna do ET for your 100th episode.

The star wars reference had me rolling but I love how it ends in irony.

  • September 4, 2010 at 3:58 pm

The only thing missing from this great episode was the quote from Back to the Future 3; when Marty said to Young Doc Brown: …all the best stuffs are made in Japan.

    Otherwise It was epic.

Jason fired first! Hahahaha, so well done as usual.

Those are great title cards too, I like how there’s so much packed into each one. I had to pause a few times just so I could look at all the characters etc.

    Thanks for the revisit.

Great video, but there’s a problem. When it gets to the Back to the Future 3 Sega Genesis Review, the Video starts glitching up VERY badly. Any way this can be fixed?

  • September 4, 2010 at 6:18 pm

    What an awesome episode.
I always laugh when you get surprised at a game that’s actually good.

The intro is hilarious. 🙂 Why does George Lucas does that?

  • September 4, 2010 at 6:27 pm

Sounded like we get a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Re-Review. There wasn’t much to see in the original one, looking forward to that 🙂

  • Kiarachu

    September 4, 2010 at 6:32 pm

Lol at Star Wars references with Jason…it make me laugh ^_^

And Japan has ALWAYS the better game(and things).Like Taiko no Tatsujin or others.

Keep it up the good nerd work…and the other videos as well…you’re great!

  • September 4, 2010 at 6:58 pm

totally a missed oppurtunity to go back and WATCH yourself reviewing these old games, and interacting with your old nintendo NERD self, as in…..the back to the future films. now THAT would have been fucking epic.

  • Jackred

    September 4, 2010 at 7:52 pm

    Hi James,
This is Jack Red, now this was an great episode but I have an question how much did you hate Back to the Future Part III on Genesis compared to the first two you did before?

  • September 4, 2010 at 8:15 pm

Oh man… that’s just great! I can’t believe you actually went back to the old games, too cool! It’s just too bad we don’t get to see the rest of Back to the Future III! 😀

Super Back to the Future II… man, looks like a fun game. Yeah, the characters are cartoony and have big heads, but I think it still would have worked… why didn’t they release that here?!

And I agree it would have been funny to see you interact with your old Nintendo Nerd self. I’ve been watching your videos since those times, and throwing in that BttF angle, as another user mentioned, would have been great!

I laughed my ass off at you parodying the special edition trilogy, and then your reassurance that you still have plenty of stuff to work with. SO many games! I wonder what the red NES cart was though?

What’s the unvisited game left? I can’t wait. Maybe… Dick Tracy? Who knows. 😀

Hmmmmmmmm……………Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde perhaps??? Or the long awaited often requested e.t on ateri 2600???
Great episode. It figures Japan gets a good game we get shit. Surprised we didn’t see the flask in this episode.

    September 4, 2010 at 8:42 pm

only in Japan, only in Japan….

My best guess of the next game is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, because it was referred to as the worst game the nerd has played so far, next to Action 52, and he couldn’t get anywhere near far in that game. Somehow, its possible, and the game has multiple endings, so there is a lot to work with if he can get past those F-ing lightning bolts. XD

  • Redd the Sock

    September 4, 2010 at 9:12 pm

Great stuff. I always felt some of those old vids left a lot out that needed to be covered.

Still, one thing missing here is the most ass piece of the NES BTTF game. You only get one shot at the final level. You miss 88 miles per hours, you have to start the game over.

And say what you will about the two NES entries, yes they were bad, but at least they could be understood. Ever try Back tot he Future on the Commodore 64? I’ve played it, I’ve even beaten it, but I still have no idea how I did it. Not that “it’s so hard I can’t beleive I beat it” no idea. A total “WTF am I supposed to be doing” no idea.

James, let me just say in the past I was kinda wary about the way you were some what calming down with the games after the Dick Tracey review and was still ok with that. Not that it was bad remind you! Your still the fucking man no matter what ! However, the pat revisted review, WAS FUKING EPIC! I saw all the things I LOVED about the old avgn reviews, Anger!, the random spurts of rage with you breaking games and throwing stuff! along with causing damage to yourself due to the shitty ness of a game. Needless to say you have completely revived my love for the AVGN . cant wait to see what other videos will be in the future, including the interviews and the board James and w/e you make. Keep up the epic work!

I think the next re review will be Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

  • September 4, 2010 at 9:34 pm

Um did you apply for Godhood with how much better this review is? I wonder if there are any cart adapters to let Super Famicom run on SNES because I’d love to get that game but I don’t have newer systems to look for it as DLC or anything like that and I’m not sure a Famicom would like the screwed up power in my apartment. Its hard enough getting the systems I have now to keep working.

So are you honestly contemplating going back to Dr. Jekyll (Gee Kil) and Mr Hyde?

  • September 4, 2010 at 9:35 pm

I really like the new video, and all, bu i have to say is was hoping to see you do a game you never done before, so im a little disappointed that i have to wait another month to see the next episode, but i will be waiting. i would really like to see you do “Ghost N’ Goblins” for the NES, and its not so well know sequel on the SNES, “Super Ghouls N’ Ghosts”

    September 4, 2010 at 10:52 pm

This was a completely unexpected choice for an episode, but I thought it actually worked very well and had many humorous moments. I also really liked the new title cards (Roger Rabbit was epic). I actually use the title cards as icons on my computer for the videos I download from GT (or YouTube for the earlier videos). The only title cards that really need images now are AVGN # 1, 2, 3, 8, 13, 17, 18, and 19 and possibly 53. (Episode 53 was part 2 of the Batman series, but I used the “Cock” punch illustration as my title card icon). I guess the rest are sort of discretionary for redrawing title cards.

During the review of the NES BttF 1 game, when the AVGN is talking about Marty’s inability to control his legs, I thought for sure he was going to make a Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s joke. I’m sure the idea ran through his head, just like everyone else’s, but I’m glad he kept it tasteful. I found it pretty disturbing when people criticized Michael J Fox for his supposedly “exaggerated” spastic movements during an interview a few years ago. Parkinson’s is actually a disease characterized by bradykinesia, or lack of movement due to a lack of the neurotransmitter, dopamine. There are a few early treatments, including deep brain electrical stimulation and medical intervention (for example, amantadine is actually a flu preventative that coincidentally helps with Parkinson’s). When Michael J Fox started having spastic movements in interviews a few years ago, this was because he was starting Levodopa/Carbidopa, which is sort of the last line therapy, replacing normal dopamine. When patients are started on this, they can have hyperkinesia, which explains MJF’s supposedly “exaggerated” movements during those interviews.

At any rate, what I’m trying to say is: Great review, I’m glad the nerd didn’t make an opportune Parkinson’s joke when he was talking about Marty’s uncontrollable legs, people were idiots for criticizing MJF for his spastic interview movements, and Parkinson’s can effect ANYONE since there is very little heritability.

Just in case you have not finished shooting new footage for a Jekyll and Hyde revisit here are the NES Game Genie Codes for it. ©Galoob copied from the NES Code Book. Following the instructions to give credit of copyright wherever reprinted so hopefully whomever inherited the rights won’t sue.

I don’t know what to say about AVGN anymore. I think what you do is great, but I think you may have started a revolution (seriously). The internet is literally flooded with opinionated reviews.

This is exactly the reason I loved this episode. I will be frank. I like AVGN, but I don’t hold it to any sort of standard. If someone can do better, then I would be more obliged to watch his or her videos.

The last few episodes have drawn away from that rushed feeling I got with some of the earlier videos. I think the entire year of 2009 was just trying to tie in with the popular films of the year. I was OK with that. Now, I’m just a fan, so me saying “I’m OK with that doesn’t mean shit!”
You do what you want to do.

Honestly, I haven’t been waiting out the seconds until the next AVGN, but I do frequent the site. All that being said, what you’re doing now is so much better than any of the other reviews I’ve come across from other game reviewers. You’re cleaning up your work and refining it. And I think that speaks volumes. Of, course the lead with the slightly aggressive assault on Lucas and Spielberg was great. I at best write reviews, but I feel so behind the times when I see great video reviews or synopses like what your team produces.

You pointed out flaws in your original reviews that I hadn’t even noticed. Love AVGN, and love Cinemassacre. Keep up the good work. Can’t wait till October.

Looks like more than 70% of all the other comments have had Jekyll and Hyde. I can’t think of a better game to slip in a review for the Game Genie on. I don’t know if it would be the right mood but this is mostly post padding because I couldn’t avoid commenting on Mattsmith’s comment. That was TMI and too far.

I think James leaves some subliminal hints in this video: in the end there’s the picture of four guys with guitars and one of them has an question mark on his face. The four guys are Metallica, in the EP Garage Days Re-Revised (infact the title Nintendo Days Re-Revised is taken from it).The second guy from the left is Kirk Hammett, and he’s the guy with the question mark in the picture. I think there’s a connection…

I truly appreciate your doing new AVGN though it costs you time you could well use for other projects. However, as you said in your little autobiography, the nerd draws the attention of more people to your work in general and that’s always a great thing.
And finally what better thing is there then having a good laugh after a hard day.

Hm. In some sense I like the new renditions, however some of the old bits are still classics. Yes, including the shirt! We could look at the untidy shirt as the game made you so depressed that you couldn’t be bothered with anything. Only reason to put on a shirt was because ScrewAttack doesn’t condone nudity. 😉

Otherwise, I like the additions you made. More description of the games, more on the later levels. But personally I’d like you to get through your entire library before going back. 🙂

Remember when AVGN actually used to be a character? It’s just James now. In an AVGN episode, why should “The Nerd”, reflect on AVGN episodes? When he wore the wrinkly unbuttoned shirt in the original back to the future episode, it was appropriate. He was THE FUCKIN’ NERD!

  • Zentu

    September 5, 2010 at 9:28 pm

While we are on the subject of science fiction, I do seem to recall that their was a Star Trek : The Next generation Game for the Super Nintendo. Rented it once, dident really have any of the same magic as the TV show. Much like how your review of the origonal Star Trek , although preaty accurate to the episodes, Sucked all the Fun right out of it. I mean in the time traveling episodes, I would of thought that being from the future, theyd maybe Demand some items so they can return home, But NO, Having watched that episode, they literly had you the gamer, Dick around for a Hour or two playing a giant game of “Re-lay” take “this to This” person or take this Back to “That” person.

    – Hey! I know of an NES game I just couldent figure out. “Legacy of the Wizard” …..Seriously! I only wish I ever had the origonal instruction Book , because that game just throws you into the game with No instructions on your ultimate goal. Had a Long Password System Which for me despite puting it in correctly, dident work.

nice job on the shit rainbow, i saw the plane flying over my city… anyway there’s this game that is a complete tower of shit and was wondering if you could review it, it’s called Young Merlin for the SNES.

  • September 5, 2010 at 9:54 pm

wow… why did nintendo con us out of the superior sound of the famicom systems? or for that matter, the kick ass games that were never ported to the PAL or north american regions. maybe it’s inconsequential to most, but it pisses me off. they had superior functionality in many respects & we get this toned down version that(if that wasn’t bad enough) costs more.

on another note, i wonder how man people are aware of the Sattelaview that they saw fit to jip us out of as well. did they think it was funny to leave us out of the loop? xbox shouldn’t have made such waves with xbox live or the xbox market place when nintendo was doing it since the early 90’s… tsk tsk tsk nintendo. why do you hate us?

This episode was a long one, but it is nice to see more details of some of those games, particularly TMNT, because I never made it past the area right after the underwater stage. I always kind of assumed the game didn’t go on much more after that, and now I almost take it as a challenge that I need to get the game to see that shit. The extra stuff about the BttFII/III game gives a lot better of an idea as to how shitty that game really was too. The genesis one still wasn’t gone into that in depth but who really cares anyway. It was all worth it though for the segment of the video dealing with the japanese game, and the way that was edited with segments of james’ expression. Classic. And, a great addition to the AVGN series. That Japanese BttF game actually looks kind of awesome, I mean, imagine seeing that opening with the flying Delorean as a kid, and the scene where Biff crashes into the truck full of turds. That would have been epic. We totally got screwed!

Guys, it’s not hard to see that the angry video game nerd has been fucked in the ass by the long dick of screwattack.com. It’s a commercial gig now. Notice how the rolling rock label on the beer is “conveniently” hidden? Notice how the cursing is brought to a minimum now? Also, it’s not hard to see that James’ heart isn’t in any more. Being the nerd is not his passion. He cut back to one video a month for a reason. Lately, the nerd videos lack authenticity. We’re being fed pop culture media now. I urge you to remember the angry video game nerd series as what it originally represented: the nostalgic symbol of our generation.

  • Lavargian

    September 6, 2010 at 4:30 pm

Lol, jules337 is a major tool! I urge you to watch Bugs Bunny’s Crazy Castle, and see how much work went into making that video, then tell me his heart isn’t in it any more. Also, watch the Godzilla episode, then come back here, and tell me they are forcing him to cut back on the swearing.

He cut back to one video a month, because he has become much busier than he was back in ’06 and ’07 when he was still making videos from his own house. He is much more in demand these days, and has a lot more projects to work on then just the Angry Video Game Nerd.

  • gox

    September 6, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Solid vid but as some people have said just doesn’t feel the same. The nerd doesn’t seem angry anymore(i enjoyed the angry rants about the game or just talking about how much it sucks while he plays). Been a watcher for about as long as someone could and the first 5-6 will always be my favorite but seems like over the years the character has changed too far away from the original.

(i guess that is partly because he is reviewing games that didn’t make him mad as a kid but are emailed to him from other people so the passion/hate is not there like the older reviews)

Hope it isn’t Dr Jek and Mr Hyde.. by far my favorite nerd vid it is just so perfect about how mad we got at crappy nintendo games a more reasonable review id o not think can do it justice.

Will keep supporting this site but hope James before the nerd is done finds again some of the magic that made this series awesome.

I think it might be another revisiting of the Batman reviews. The Joker wore a suit extremely similiar to the one in the picture. Not to mention, he did a half-ass review of like half the games so he might finish those.

Most likely it is Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. Trust me.. that game is more ass than you can imagine. The perpose of the game is so fuckin retarded that when you finish that piece of shit you will find yourself scratching your balls and your head at the same time wondering what the fuck did you waste your precious time on… After that you will propably get a machete and cut your own head … Rambo style.

Angry Nintendo Nerd Special Edition: AVGN updated, heh. Or not.

Guess you were destroying a Soviet Buran shuttle in Top Gun. Not that their shuttle program ever got anywhere anyway.

There was a green TMNT cart? Huh, maybe I do remember hearing about it somewhere.

BttF 2&3… because they couldn’t be arsed to make a separate game for each movie, I suppose.

Yep, Genesis music usually sounds like ass.

The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde review is a perfect example of what made “The Nerd” great. We felt the character back then. It wasn’t about the game. It was before AVGN became self-aware. Now, it’s pretty much just James. I will get no closure out of a thorough review of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

  • September 6, 2010 at 8:26 pm

    @ Weezer_Fan
Don’t be so naive. If you watched this episode, you’d see he was dressed in the shorts and short-sleeved shirt. He had his pillow. And he had his Anger. The point of the game reviews is to REVIEW the GAME. If he just says, “It fucking sucks,” that isn’t a review. We love his anger, sure, but he still has to review it. If you don’t like it, then why do you bother to watch? All James gets now are complaints that he isn’t angry enough. Let’s say I wrote a review of the game (which I do) and I wrote this: “The game sucks monkey balls. This is horrible. Don’t ever play it because you’ll be scarred for life,” is that a review? No, because it doesn’t offer any description of why the game is bad.

The point isn’t that “The Nerd” needs to be more angry, it’s that “The Nerd” isn’t a character anymore. He’s just a game reviewer.

That’s like saying William Shatner wasn’t a character in Star Trek because you didn’t like the latest episode.

    @ Everyone
For some reason, I once posted that James’ birthday was June 30th. I’m just saying now that I have no idea why I thought that. I was just thinking about AVGN and his birthday popped into my head. July 10, 1980. How do I know his birthday? I’m the #1 fan, that’s how. Yeah, the information is useless, but I said it anyway.

  • September 6, 2010 at 11:29 pm

Nice look back. I know he’s sick of hearing it, but I want more anger! Great freak out with the Back to the Future games at the end though. Back to the Future II & III seems like torture to play. Super Back to the Future II on the other hand looked really fun.

Just got done watching the video.
This one will only be understood by old school
    Nerd fans.
The special addition clips were a great joke.
It’s cool to see James look back to the games that got me into a fan, although I still like the orginal videos better.
People are saying Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the next review for October.
James, please don’t do that the orginal video of that made me love
the Nerd character, another review of that game would not be such a good idea.

But once a AVGN fan, always a AVGN fan!
    Keep going Mr. Rolfe!

    September 7, 2010 at 4:45 am

    @ gamerdude122

    a. It’s not like that at all. You’re totally missing the point. All I’m saying is that “The Nerd” a CHARACTER is way too self-aware that he is, in fact, “The Nerd”. For instance, in this episode if AVGN were a CHARACTER (like in the Crazy Castle episode for instance) than why would he be conserned about how thoroughly he reviewed previous episodes. All I’m saying is AVGN is no longer a character. In my opinion, it has caused the show to become rather redundant.

    b. I never said I didn’t like any given episode.

    Hello James!

Long-time viewer (first vid I saw was the TMNT review on youtube), just registered to post after watching this video and seeing some of the comments, though.

This is by far the best video I’ve seen you put out in a very long time. For me, the nerd was something I enjoyed during a stage of transition in my life. I didn’t see the first videos until I had begun college, so AVGN is more than just a game review collection. It brings back memories of my past, a great nostalgic reminder of my college years.

Recently your reviews have been very different from the early videos that so many of us know and love. This isn’t a bad thing necessarily, but change isn’t accepted very easily by many.

I just wanted to finally post and let you know that your work has had a great impact on my life not just for the creations you have made, but because of the time period in my life that they represent. Thanks for your effort! There are many complainers on your comment section, but I assure you that many of us watch and enjoy your videos, old and new, that don’t comment.

    Keep up the great work!

  • September 7, 2010 at 9:54 am

    @ Weezer_Fan
So… you don’t like he show anymore because he became “self-aware”? He’s a game reviewer, but funnier. That’s what he’s been since… around mid 2007 for me. That’s when he finally turned into a reviewer, something he was supposed to have been with his Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde REVIEW. I go back and edit my reviews if I find them unsatisfactory. Reviewers are SUPPOSED to be concerned about how good their reviews are. Still, before mid-2007, he did some ACTUAL REVIEWS like Friday the 13th. Reviewers tell how the game works, and that’s exactly what James did. Yet nobody complained about F13th.

  • Weezer_Fan

    September 7, 2010 at 10:59 am

    @ gamerdude122

The Friday the 13th Episode is quite possibly my favorite. I think we disagree on one simple fact. James is more focused on being a reviewer now. Despite the fact that I think there are plenty of straight forward reviewers out there, often I feel like he incorporates certain aspects of his reviews for the sake of proving himself to the gaming community. I always thought of AVGN as above all that, you know? He was just going to do his own thing, in character of course. There will always be some funny moments in AVGN, so I’ll continue to come back. I think he works just as hard (if not harder) as ever on the reviews, but in my opinion he’s focusing on the wrong aspects. The Action 52 episodes and this most recent one are two examples of just that (again, in my opinion). I definitely look forward to the Halloween episodes. That’s the best time of year for James.

  • Weezer_Fan

    September 7, 2010 at 11:00 am

    @ gamerdude122

Edit: We both agree that James is more focused on being a reviewer now, but we disagree that it’s a good thing.

  • MountainEnemy

    September 7, 2010 at 12:35 pm

I’m with everyone else predicting J&H for the next review. I’m not sure that it deserves a whole video, but it might be nice, especially if he finds others to throw in with it. It’s probably the review he most needs to redo. I love James, but the original J&H video is barely watchable. It’s outrageously poorly recorded, and really boring. He just slowly talks at the camera. Half the time he’s not even speaking, and it goes on forever. It’s enough to make a guy want to make a review starring the Angry “Angry Video Game Nerd” Nerd.
On a positive note, this latest video was great. I don’t know why, but I was rolling for nearly an hour when that plane flew out of the screen. Good stuff.

  • September 7, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Son of a bitch…you’re going to go and leave us on a cliffhanger like that! What the fuck, man, how are you going to go do such a thing like that! lol! Just kidding, James. I really enjoyed this review. Are we going back to Dragon Slayer, Uncle Fester’s Quest, or that dreaded piece of shit Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hide?! Hmm…tick tock, tick tock, only time will tell.

  • September 7, 2010 at 3:43 pm

    @ Weezer_Fan
Agreed on everything. And of course Halloween is best for James. He’s such a fucking Nerd at everything monster-y. He’s gonna be real busy with the Halloween episodes of AVGN (there better be more one episode, or shit’s gonna hit the fan like it did in “Airplane!”) and Monster Madness and whatever reviews there are for newer monster movies or whatever. He’s a busy bastard, that’s all I can say.

    September 8, 2010 at 6:14 pm

Some people are saying it better than me.

James, the problem with the new AVGN is that they don’t feel passionate anymore. My critique of the character “The Nerd” is that now his mannerisms are nearly identical to “James Rolfe’s” in other MOVIE based web-vids. The difference is merely asthetic. You put on the coat. And you curse a bit more. But I no longer feel you’re angry.

In fact, as I watch these, I can see that you’re sick of doing them. Which is why you cut them down to monthly vids. But It’s showing. The revisits to improve the quality? That isn’t a good direction. People LOVE that you look hung-over as all hell in the first videos. People love that it seems like “On-screen” anarchy. People love that it’s short and sweet but with PURE fire.

I love your videos and I am a HUGE fan. I literally visit this website daily to see what else you do. But AVGN seems to be waning on you. I don’t want the show to go down in flames. I think you need to find something to be pissed off about with these games, or write a nice finale and continue working on other projects.

  • Weezer_Fan

    September 8, 2010 at 8:27 pm

    @ Nathan B

I completely agree with you in that AVGN is basically just James now. I also agree that his idea of improving the videos is backwards thinking. However, I don’t think he cut his videos down to once a month because he’s sick of doing the series. I think he was being sincere when he said he needed more time to work on other projects. Actually, his videos are consistently near the 20 minute mark now. So there’s no doubt he’s working as hard as ever on his videos. Whether or not he’s sick of it is debatable.

James said himself in his Cinemassacre 200 video that it was ironic AVGN made him famous because of how much less time and effort he put into it. There’s something to that. I’m not saying he should spend less time or put forth less effort, but get back to basics. Take the Silver Surfer episode for example. It basically starts out with “The Nerd” saying “Okay, this is Silver Surfer.” He puts it in, and then just starts bitching. Classic.

  • September 8, 2010 at 9:39 pm

  • September 8, 2010 at 10:48 pm

Alright, if you guys want the AVGN back, I’ll get him to do so. But only if he does a review for the following game: Darkman on NES

James, please read on intently. If you have this game in your possession, please don’t hesitate to play it, but only after I state my findings.

First, the main screen is such a joke. The character looks kinda bad-ass like a mummy in dark clothes and a formal hat with these red eyes. Cool looking. When you start the game, you get this weird fuck in the same clothes, but blue and almost invisible wraps.

Second, the graphics suck. You can’t tell what the hell you can jump on and what you can’t. And the environments look like shit.

Third, GAMEPLAY!! Control is absolutely fucking horrible. It KILLS the game. That, and the most broken collision detection I’ve ever seen. Oh, and your enemies take half a fuckin’ hour to die and the overall gameplay is uninspired and 1-600000000000000000000000000000000000-assed. That’s fucking bad.

James, if you read this, please review it. I’m not kidding when I say its up to Dr. Jeakhill and Mr. Hyde standards. Oh, and get drunk and sit in front of your shitty Mac. Grab yourself your 60th Rolling Rock of the day and start talking. Have fun.

  • LCmiracle

    September 8, 2010 at 10:57 pm

Guys I really wish James would review Dr,Jekyle and Mr.Hyde again.
I mean the game had some creative and brand new idea at that time. You were supposed to keep walking right and avoid being hit too much by the villagers and reach the other side of the map. And if you got hit too much you turn into Mr.Hyde and have to keep attacking enemies and walking left until you can turn back to Dr.Jekyle. If it takes too long to turn back to Dr.Jeklye you get struck by lightning. Don’t tell me the idea itself wasn’t unique 30 something years ago.
Overall, the game sucks, but it deserve another look at it, by AVGN.

  • September 8, 2010 at 10:59 pm

    @ Weezer_Fan
I’m gonna give in half-way right here. I looked at the comment about Silver Surfer, so I went to the review and immediately saw your point. For other readers, this is the intro.

“This is Silver Surfer. Silver shit. *Few seconds later* He looks so stupid! Like *imitates pose* *Few seconds later* Alright, so you got this stage select thing, similar to MegaMan, which is good for the sake of this review because I don’t have to beat anything to show you all the stages of the game. So, it’s kinda like one of those fly’n shoot games, kinda like Defender or Life Force (which is a marvelous game, I must say). Nothin’ too special, but its not bad, actually. Your weapon is kinda lame, but there’s some power-ups that’ll let you shoot double. *Hits wall and dies* The fuck? I touched the walls? That’s right, you can’t touch anything in this game, so don’t fuck around.”

And the game goes so downhill from there.

So, Weezer_Fan, I must say that you have a point. He isn’t as Angry anymore in the first minute of a game.. However, the amount of anger you get through these 20-minutes videos are still pretty Angry. However, James needs to step it up a notch. More screen-time means more Anger. Besides, when’s the last time James said, “It’s a SHITLOAD of FUCK”??? It’s been at least a year, I must say…

  • UltimoGuitarist

    September 9, 2010 at 12:28 am

James, may I give some positive criticism? I love your videos. I’ve been watching each release probably since around 2007/8. I always get at least one laugh out of every video, including the other projects besides the nerd. I’m sure this has been brought up many times but, I just can’t help but feel that the anger is somewhat forced or lacking as the series goes on. Now before all the fanboys start ganging up on me, please keep in mind that I previous stated, i LOVE every video that is released. I always enjoy them, with or without lots of anger. But I just have to take issue with this fact now because the very title on which the character is based, has “Angry” in the title. Most of the videos, you appear mostly pleased all the time. There are a number of different things you can do to appear more angry. Get really pissed off somehow before shooting the video or something lol. Also like for example in this video when you were talking about back to the future 3 where you said “theres just one problem: the difficulty” You could have said…There’s jus one problem. ITS TOO! FUCKING! HARDDDDDDDDDDD! Scream your ass off man I know you can do it. We all love to hear the yelling and screaming so don’t be shy. Get that vintage nerd anger back in your soul and freak out more. It’s epic! =)

  • UltimoGuitarist

    September 9, 2010 at 12:39 am

Damn. Upon writing my comment I noticed that some other people in this very column have already made statements on the same subject I brought up. I guess I should have read further down first.

I do have something to say in regard to Nathan B’s comment.

How true it is to say that we love the amateur hungover unscripted genuine anger and all the other words you can throw into that mix. It’s so true. Anyone here heard of a little show called The Trailer Park Boys? It’s a mockumentary style tv show based on the lives on trailer trash people and their adventures ina grease neighbourhood. The film style is very low budget and amateur and makes you BELIEVE that it’s really real, and thus makes you more interested and into it. I also believe that James had these same qualities in his earlier videos, which could be easily pinpointed as a big reason why his IS famous today. I think people love the low budget amateur style videography. I mean don’t get me wrong, high class shit is great too, but not when something is KNOWN for being the quality that is was in the first place. It’s ironic though because as we all know, James is very into directing and video and all those things, so its only natural that he’s going to want to do the best job he can. Work with the newest technology, come up with new tricks and use new features etc. I think it’s unavoidable for someone who is as passionate about this type of genre of work. It’s like loving a guitar player who plays sloppy, but everyone loves him. How would you like to be loved by millions because you’re a bad guitar player? It would make you feel like shit. I think the same thing could be said in this situation. James doesn’t want to be known for shitty videos. Well, they can be shitty games but the videos about them don’t have to be. =p So, with that said, I can’t blame the guy for wanting to improve on his work. I AGREE with the fact that he’s more like James now and losing the AVGN a bit, but I can’t really complain about the video quality, given his interest in this field. I do like the old school shit but that’s just me. I love all the videos regardless of what happens. I think James is a cool guy as a person, so it doesn’t really matter to me how he portrays himself in the videos. He can do no wrong in my book.

Keep on doing what you’re doing James.

  • September 9, 2010 at 1:35 am

Alright, I’ve decided to go back and make edits to this episode in text to show what James SHOULD HAVE said. This will be several comments for each individual game. Yes, even the back to the Future games will be individual. I’m gonna make this a series that lasts until James turns back to the Nerd. Well, the ANGRIER NERD. Just go to here: http://realreview.weebly.com/ and read my series.

I have an idea. I say we all come to a bit of a compromise.

Look, if you don’t think James is as much of the Angry Nerd he was, stop your bitching. The videos are 20 minutes long for fuck’s sake! He gives in-depth reviews and offers a lot of smartly written lines. Besides, I’d like to see you guys come out with a 20 minute-long video every month while having an acting gig, writing a screenplay, doing 31 OTHER videos, and getting so fucking pissed off by shitty games that you can’t take the fuckness. What, that’s not a word? Well, it should be.

For people who are happy about what he does now and enjoy it just as much, if not more than before, just talk about whatever. Your favorite lines, how great the episode was, waiting for Monster Madness, etc.

James probably works harder than anyone else on this site, so it’d be nice to read some damn compliments every once in a fucking while! Damn. Well, I got that outta my system.

I too must give my 2 cents. While it was a clever idea to go back and “refine” the former episodes, we do see more of the “mature filmmaker” seeping through and giving more of an objective response.

What I’ve noticed lately was this, your E3 commentary as The Nerd, was overly acted, had a few good lines, but seemed awkward, and in THAT setting, I enjoyed your “James” self reviewing over E3 a billion times more, because those were games we were not exposed to yet, we’d like an objective response in that scenario, and people genuinely respect your opinion on fresh material.

As of late now though, we sort of see that James the Filmmaker coming into these videos more and more. Which if that’s the direction you’re taking, maybe The Nerd is ready to pass on.

Your previous Nerd videos, which were so consistent, pretty much up until Sword Quest, were amazing. But if you truly enjoy doing videos as The Nerd, I think maybe you sort of have to let your “ethical self” go, through caution to the wind, and just be blunt, and dismiss the word “objective” from your vocabulary when developing these videos. I don’t think people have or ever will dismiss your opinion on your other work either, I like seeing your side projects too amongst many others as well.

I don’t want you to take what I said as a negative opinion or a directed attack. I wanted to be empirical about what I noticed, and from reviewing these comments, it’s what many others have thought as well. I don’t think in any way shape or form, that “The Nerd” is dead, but rather in a state of crisis, like many other TV shows have gone through, having episodes that don’t meet former quality every once in a while.

I still admire your work James, I am eager to see what will always happen next. Enjoy!

    1.21 FUCK-A-WATTS!!!
At the end of the video, you mentioned that you might revisit another game. If its Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Fuck, then take that piece of shit down with full force. Unleash your rage and finish that game once and for all. I’m just being dramatic. But anyway good luck James, I can’t wait!

    @ gamerdude122

How many people are you? I can’t figure you out.

Anyways, you don’t have to make your own videos to be critical. That’s what the forums are for; debate. Since we’re essentially the ones supporting the AVGN crew (there are at least a handful of people involved in the show so don’t think all criicisms are directed solely at James), we have the right to be critical.

Also, James gets plenty of praise. Just read the 14 pages of comments for this video and you’ll see.

  • September 9, 2010 at 10:50 pm

    @ Weezer_Fan
Haha, you don’t understand. My brother is a sneaky bastard and when I was at taking classes for MMA, he jumped on my computer and started fucking about. Yeah, I’m putting a password on this.

Anyway, I agree what you had said originally (partially agree). He is less angry. Still, we REALLY can’t complain. He gives us almost 20 minutes of AVGN every month. I gotta admit, I’m still kinda disappointed that he isn’t doing it as frequently as he used to, and the month seems to take forever. Like right now, I want something new. Anything new. If only October would hurry its ass up. That’s when I get my James time of year.

  • September 9, 2010 at 11:23 pm

  • September 10, 2010 at 11:57 am

    @ avgnfan155
    1. I’m a bigger fan than you. Just saying.
    2. Wrong, actually. You’re supposed to jump on their heads. Go right and get to the end. If you turn to Hyde, go left quickly or die.

    September 10, 2010 at 12:03 pm

OMG I think the game is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I had to view another YouTube Vid on it to be sure if the Cloths on the mystery man in this video matched… Dr. J is the only one I know of the Nerds games thats that well dressed. Aparently from this other vid on Dr.J and MR H. Idealy I get the impression its more of a game of pacients, then actuall fighting. That is, you have to compleate the LVs as much as you can before turning into hyde. Well, I’m not going to say anything more. I look foward to whatever the mystery re-visit is.

  • September 10, 2010 at 1:27 pm

He brings to light a big issue with some older games, and that is the regional specific versions. My best guess of the back to the future 2 would be that (a) it was made later to coincide with the japanese release and by that point not seen as marketable on the states, or (b) ljn had the right to release the games in the us (region 1) so it was a legal issue.

One that he should’ve mentioned on the ghostbusters series he did was the PAL version of ghostbusters 2 on nes. This one was far better than the other version, and the gameboy port is of this version, even in the us. (he also excluded the extreme ghostbusters games and the real ghostbusters game boy game [which was practically another crazy castle game] but thats another issue)

I’m sure there are plenty of other examples as most of the japanese versions of licensed games were better (superman excluded) usually because they came out a console generation later than the us version.

An oldschool nerd went playing on one dark and windy day
Upon a couch he rested as he played the time away
When all at once a mighty clutch of crappy games he saw
    A-Fouling up his T.V. screen,
    he shit into his drawers.

LJN still made him puke, he cursed the man of steel.
Red Hood was brown and grainy and Bugs Bunny made him reel.
A bolt of fear went through him as he played the CD-I.
Haunted by the games of old, and he heard their mournful cry.

    Yippie yi Oooooh!
    Yippie yi Yaaaaay!
Why won’t you let us die?

His face was gaunt, his eyes were blurred, his shirts all soaked with sweat.
He’s tryin’ hard to beat that game, but he ain’t beat it yet.
‘Cause he’s got to play old Zelda on that shitty CD-I.
    Shaq-Fu really sucked his balls,
As he played on hear him cry.

As night fell on that stubborn nerd, the devil called his name.
“If you want to save your soul from Hell a -playin’ all our games,
Then gamer change your ways today, Death Christ won’t save your soul.”
He blew that fuckin’ classic up, ’cause that’s how this nerd rolls.

    Yippie yi Oooooh!
    Yippie yi Yaaaaay!
    Glitch Gremlins made him die.
    Ghostbusters made him cry.
    Playing on through the night.

  • September 10, 2010 at 2:57 pm

    @ Joe Kline
So what if they came out a generation later? Look, if in… 1984 or ’85, someone took a shit in a jar and wrote NES on it, that represents the games. Now in 1991, another shit is taken in another jar and SNES is written on it. Old shit and new shit are still the same.

  • minimog16uk

    September 12, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Shame he never reviewed Back To The Future 3 on the Sinclair Spectrum, that was one of the worst games I ever played.

It was similar to the Genesis (Mega Drive) version he reviewed, but with much worse graphics and sound (it was on a spectrum after all!) but the most infuriating thing about it was that every time you died you had to reload the casette again, so you’d end up sitting for around 5 minutes listening to the awful debugging screen after only a few minutes of actual gameplay.

shame they never released the Spectrum in the US, it was a seriously shit console and had some seriously shit games to go with it.

  • That guy from Faxanadu

    September 12, 2010 at 5:17 pm

I don´t get the “justify those games” approach, AVGN´s always been about comedy, not fair reviews. TMNT is an awesome (but dead hard) game for example, but since bashing it made a fun review, I´ve always been okay with that. And no, I´ve never completed the game either, the last corridor before Shredder is just so hard 🙂

But this was indeed an entertaining review, Loved when the plane flew off and the reactions to the Super Famicom BttF II.

  • s_w_sanders

  • masgeo

    September 13, 2010 at 11:11 am

It’s cool that you went back to fill some gaps, but seriously man, the old reviews were so funny because of the holes. When I was a kid, if I got a bad game with no instructions, I’d have no idea what to do and never get far in it. Your old vids captured that perfectly. Your new vids are still funny, but more like actual professional reviews. The spontanious shit spewing with ragged shirts and sonic booms was awesome.

And next? Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde 😉 That one, you really do need to go back to.

    Can’t wait.

  • September 13, 2010 at 6:09 pm

AWESOME episode! I laughed up my asshole when you returned to your old reviews to alter them!

I have to say, I really do enjoy your honest opinion about games and game culture. I mean, I’m a huge fan of the AVGN’s antics when they are original and sharp, but your unfiltered opinion and knack for description is ALWAYS valuable and entertaining. Like your Nintendo Power Magazine episode; the episode gives the impression that your just hanging out with the fans and bullshitting, and it is damn hilarious.

Whatever you do, do it cuz YOU like it.

Always good to see you go back and do an extend to a review (and not going the lucas way ;)). And although I can understand you want to show the full game I understood why you only showed a few levels. Not only due to time restraints but to me it really just said ‘yeah like me he’d be sick of that game after getting shafted up the ass without lube in the first few levels’. It give it that ‘fuck this game, I’m not even gonna try to finish it’ vibe to it.

    @ interllect

OMFG Yes! This is exactly What I was saying After he did Zelda 2.

I thought I was the only one. The problem with Miracle World, aside from some of the Glitches (some of Which Can be Triggered at will) its a game thats not Bad graphics wize, its Bad-Difficult. I only beat it when I was 16 when I decided to take a trip down memory lane.
From Blocks, that do Noting but make you shiver for a secound, Repetitive and YES predictable RPS games in which YES there is a pattern. And an End Boss thats only Slightly Better than the one in Simons Quest. just makes the difficulty getting through the game not worth the overall trouble.

-I dident play the other Alex Kidd titles but maybe thats a good thing.

Oh and their were 2 versions of the Miracle world, One was a Cartrage for the 1st Master System and one as a Built-in For the Master system 2. Both have some differences for the same game. and I hear a rumor that the 1 and 2 Buttons Switched functions.

Well we can’t exactly expect an AVGN in october, because of the monster madness. Now I’m not saying he needs to drop all of the monster madness stuff and do an AVGN, because i personally like the monster madness. So just kick back relax and relive some of the greatest horror movies of the 20th century, with James’ Monster Madness. 😀

  • Lavargian

    October 4, 2010 at 6:59 pm

    @ Rastillin

Well, We have gotten an AVGN Halloween episode + Monster Madness every year since 2007. So, I think yes, we can certainly expect another AVGN Halloween special, and if he doesn’t put one out. Needless to say I will be disappointed, but I’d still be happy with Monster Madness. Its going great so far anyway. Then I just have to wait for James’ Christmas episode. That should be entertaining as always!

Hey James, I saw that plane. It was trying to land on my model aircraft carrier LOL 🙂

    October 16, 2010 at 11:24 pm

The first word was revolver and the second was skateboard 😛
But like James said with the milkshake, you could easily think gun with revolver and just keep looking for a three letter word.

Thanks james for revisting these games, I must say a very spot on review of these games, the thing that stuck out a mile in the re-revisted of these games was the part of the review about Back to the future 3 on the genesis, yeah dam right, I remember playing that game, you are absolutely right once again, that game right from the start is bloody hard, yeah could they not have made it any harder, its like there saying,”oh yeah will piss everyone off and make it even more harder to complete the game than what it already is”,

Another spot on review, you always have good knowledge on every game that you review, thats one of the reasons I’m a big fan.

    thanks again

Seriously James, I have really loved the nerd videos since you took them down to once a month. The energy, and elaborateness has been taken back to a higher level. The Lucas diss was fav of mine.

ironically there is a new back to the future game being made they confirmed that Christopher Lloyd is doing thw voice for doc brown but
Michael j fox isnt doing the voice of marty but the guy doing the new voice actually sounds like him which impressed me so i think this new one may be interesting.

Did you know that there’s actually a new Back to the Future game being made? It’ll be a point-and-click-adventure by Telltalte (the guys responsible for the new Sam and Max- and Monkey Island-games) and, so far, it looks pretty damn good (They have Christopher Lloyd doing the voice of Doc Brown – seriously, how fucking cool is that?).

Check this out, it’s worth it.

you know people back then were excited about the back to the future games thinking they were going 2 be awesome but if they known that shit stain rainbow was there and had there senses 2 stay away they wouldn’t have been shit on from LJN. Fuck LJN 2 hell.

  • SpeedyEric

    November 2, 2010 at 11:46 am

I love this episode, because it goes more in depth with these games than James did back in 2006, like how to beat these games, what the whole of them look like, secrets on how to beat them, and more jokes on LJN.

My god, I just hate the interpretation of the BttF theme on the Genesis game, it makes me feel like my skull’s gonna shatter into pieces.

I agree with James about Super BTTF Part II on the Super Famicom. I’m sure there would have been alot of American gamers who woulda love to play that game if it was realeased internationaly. …Slackers.

It’s sad to say but the best games are in Japan. United States, we only get a hand full of games were in Japan they get everything. And it wasn’t until high school when I realize this. There was this video game store that sold imports , models , anime , manga and old and new video games. I have play japanese snes and sega games on a emulator and they were great and also at my friend’s house because he had japanese PS1 and PS2 systems and games.

  • November 22, 2010 at 4:24 pm

15:40 i think the word is revolver.

  • December 22, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Yeah, he didn’t finished the games the first time, he wasn’t so hardcore… That’s because he hadn’t done the ninja training for ninja gaiden yet! Now he’s a master!

  • December 22, 2010 at 6:18 pm

By the way, the Top Gun review even if it’s one of the first, it’s one of my favourite, I think this extra part is useless. The last two levels as he imagined them where just perfect! If I wanted to know the games in better detail I would have searched a walktrough in the internet, or even someone else’s review! Because the Nerd’s reviews are not made to explain the games in detail, they’re made to entertain!

  • JustinLaw

I played through the first two episodes of the new back to the future game and so far…It’s GOOD….and yes AJ LoCascio is an amazing Marty McFly….and yes Christopher Lloyd is has once again immortalized himself as Doc Brown.

You know, A while ago nike made the shoes from back to the future (although they’re not self-lacing) and just recently scientists dicovered a particle that moves faster than the speed of light and moving faster than light would enable time travel… Back to the future is looking more realistic every day…

  • Dragon_Nexus

    September 25, 2011 at 4:34 pm

The biggest counter argument to time travel, in my opinion…is that if it were possible, we’d have seen time travellers already.

Anyone else notice at 21:22, there’s a a real similarity to the Nerd’s most recent fight with Bugs Bunny?

    • Piet

      February 8, 2012 at 3:02 am

Eric Stoltz shot 3-5 weeks of footage for Back to the Future before Michael J. Fox replaced him. Micheal J. Fox was wearing a red life jacket but Eric Stoltz was wearing a black jacket. I think it is very unlikable that they used him as model for the game. But it is my only explanation why the carracter looks nothing like Micheal J. Fox.

Watch the Code Monkeys episode about E.T.

Then you know why he looks nothing like Marty.

Short Story, Dave and Jerry have to program E.T.

The boss only got one Ticket and sends Dave to the Movie.

Dave sells the ticket and goes to a strip club.

And when Dave comes back and has to tell Jerry about the game,

he has no fucking idea what E.T. is, and they start programming XD

I think its not TOO unrealistic that the programmers don’t even watch the movies, and just get told what it is like 😛

The Ninja Turtles originally all had red masks in their first comic book appearances, which were printed in black and white so there was no reason to color code them. The colors are the invention of the cartoon show so that they could sell children 4 turtles instead of 1.

The cover to the game is actually one of the original comic book covers (issue 4 or 5…something like that). Who’s the wanker now, wanker.

    • gamez

      December 12, 2011 at 7:40 am

Hey dumbass his comment wasn’t an insult an to him, so why insult him back. You’re the real wanker here. And the video game is based on the cartoon series not the comic book so why include an aspect that would be only in the comic book version. @tapman16

On TMNT I could get inside the Technodrome and through it. Yet, when I get to the last hallway (that leads to the Shredder) I had 1-2 Turtles left, but the hallway had laser shooting soldiers with jet packs shooting the shit out of you. The only way I could get through the hallway and beat TMNT was with the Game Genie. Even then the Shredder has a gun that kills you in one hit, but after a few tries not so bad.

I seriously don’t get it, you say you play contra and really liked it but you couldn’t pass back to the future 3 in genesis?????, I’m not saying it is a masterpiece or something but that first level of death I completely memorized it as a 12 year old and beat it in like 1 hour afeter learning the pattern (ehich is insane), I passed the 4 levels in the game and altough stage 4 is cool, the final part is almost impossible with the steam and all on the train, and thanks to that impossible game, contra in hard, sin and punishment, donkey kong country returns in hard mode among others are more suitable to my gaming level thanks to that shit, the levels are only 4 which is shitty, the ending is balls, and the grapchis are weird, but I will always treasure that piece of shit because it REALLY improved my gaming level.

LJN never made games that’s why.

Sure, they’re frustrating, but if you think about it, some of the best games are frustrating at times. The Legend of Zelda. Contra. Castlevania. F Zero. All are great games and are also scalp eatingly frustrating at certain points.

Read the number in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and listen to what the call said in the video. It’s 18002323324. What it says in the call is different. It’s 12157398255. He basically dialed the wrong number.

Actually, I recently found out that the “Gigawatts” in the movies are actually “Jigowatts,” and are supposed to be more powerful than Giga. I read about this in the manual for the LEGO CUUSOO DeLorean Time Machine set that recently came out. Speaking of which I advise anyone who hasn’t got one already to BUY ONE IMMEDIATELY, since not only is it a great LEGO set that every BTTF fan should have, 1% of the money from every set sold(about 40 to fifty cents out of 35 dollars)goes to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research which I think is more than enough a reason to buy it as well.

Back to the Future is one of my favorite movies, but these games are just horrible!

Not sure if you’ve noticed but if you ever get 99 points in the bonus break stages, it actually stops & awards you the points, proceeding onwards. I am now very glad Funcoland didn’t have the BTTF 2/3 cart in stock back long ago. I never would’ve had the patience to finish it. At least I made it to the end of this one. Never actually beat the DeLorean scene…

I have a question for the forum moderator? I was wondering why Back to the Future for the Commodore 64 wasn’t included in the review, i understand that if he doesn’t actually have a copy of the game, then he can’t review. I was just wondering if he owned a copy, because it is by far the best game of the series.

It even has an actual C64 version of Johnny Be Good as the game-play music, its by far my favorite Back to the Future game.

Oh boy, this was a game I grew up playing. I was born in 1999 but I grew up playing nes until I got a PLAYSTATION, then a PS2, then an Xbox 360. I never did like old games, but now since I’ve seen your videos, I have a big abscession with old games and action figures. The only cartoon I ever watched when I was little was the original transformers and had some of the toys, I lost most of them but I still have a few today and will try to get more. So anyway, the game sucks and this is a nice review.

It’s not that Marty can’t stop walking, it’s because one day during filming Back To The Future, Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s Disease had taken over his legs and he couldn’t stop moving so everyone on the studio back lot was trying to help him by stopping him from hurting himself accidentally due to his restless Parkinson legs. The game has nothing to do with the movie because it is a faithful recreation of that day.
