Ronnie James Dio dies at 67

James / May 16th, 2010

I don’t mean to sound like an obituary, but I was so saddened by the news I had to share the word. Ronnie James Dio (of Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and the Dio band) has been fighting stomach cancer for a while now and died today. He was one of the greatest vocalists & song-writers in heavy metal. It was a pleasure to have seen him on tour in recent years and to hear one last album with fellow Black Sabbath bandmates “The Devil You Know” (2009).  He will be missed, but his magic will live on.

Here is the statement from Wendy Dio

“Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.”

Sad news for sure. For me, Ozzy will always be the voice of Black Sabbath but Dio definitely had some great songs. He will be missed.

I thought Edward Douglas (of was just kidding when he commented it on Twitter, but I guess the news today is tragic but true!

I always liked him when he talks about anything metal on VH1! Did you know he originated the devil horns that to this day metal fans has always throwin in the air? He says he made it after his grandmother’s version of the evil eye! Let’s all throw our devil horns in his memory!

Rest in peace Dio, you will be missed.

  • May 16, 2010 at 7:40 pm

@deathx88: I wish I had some brew around to drink, but I am completely tapped out. I will however listen to Mr. Dio’s music for the rest of today and probably till his funeral. Listening to the Elf LP he played bass and sang on right now and will work my way up through his career.

I was wondering if you were going to do one of these, I’m really glad you did. Like you I was a massive Dio fan. I saw him once on the Metal Masters and even at his age he owned the stage and had so much fun doing what he was doing. I’ve been on the verge of tears all night. Dio was the god of metal and it’s heartbreaking to see him go. My thoughts go out to Wendy and the rest of his friends and family.

Today has been a very sad day for me as well. The entire metal/hard rock world feels a loss of a talent that will probably never be matched. He helped shape the genre of heavy metal as we know it.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, James.

Looks like the torch is passed to the D now.

It’s a terrible loss, and at 67 he wasn’t even very old. But, while the body doesn’t last forever, his music will, and 100 years from now people will remember him as such.

And, if there is a hell, Satan’s probably rocking out with him right now with the return of his prodigal son.

I can’t say I’m a fan of any of Ronnie’s stuff, but he was certainly a character and a very important figure in heavy metal history (he gave us the horns, for crying out loud!). My friend’s a musician and he met Ronnie a few times and it sounds like he was just a swell guy. He will be missed.

I’m kind of suprised that you were a fan of Dio. Although a hint was that you played Sabbath’s “Time Machine” in one of your videos.

On that note, I have a lot more respect for you knowing you listened to the music of such a legend and were willing to pay your respects to him.

Maybe you can do a tribute of some sort in a later video, I’m sure it would mean a lot to some of your Dio/Black Sabbath/Rainbow/Elf fans in the crowd.

“so live for today, tommorrow never comes.” – Die Young by Black Sabbath. The irony is quite strange. He was one of my favorites. He did indeed die young. RIP, you will be missed my friend.

Yeah, this one hit me pretty hard.

He seemed really upbeat about it, like he was going to beat this thing. I’ve been cranking Dio all week in tribute.

I really hated to hear about this, as much as I hated to hear about David Wayne of Metal Church and Dimebag Darrel’s death. Truly great legends are going to be missed by all fans of metal.

This was truly a sad day for music. I was glad to be able to have seen him live once in 2001 at the Dio/Deep Purple/Scorpions tour of 01. Now I can’t wait to hear the Jorn Lande tribute album that is coming out on Frontiers Records soon I heard the song A Song For Ronnie James and it was amazing.

I almost cried when i learned Dio died. I just saw a news interview on Youtube that he was powering through the cancer and i didnt know how many months ago it was but i thought he was doing ok.
