Holy god. I made made shitty board games all the time as a kid. my favorite one was the earthbound game. it was in the caves of onett and you would roll the dice to see all the hit points you’d take off. If you rolled a 10, you’d get a smash. i even made those rudolf the rednose rats or whatever the fuck they were.

I really want to play the Street Fighter Games and Mischief Night.

Deadly Danger Dungeon is by far the hardest and cruelest Board Game I’ve ever seen. Looks nice though.

James – you did a great job with this – although I see no way to beat this – okay if you’re extremely lucky. I really want to try this out.

  • April 16, 2010 at 3:07 am

Hey James, I’d like the plans for this for a D&D campaign. I’ll let you know how successful it is and what I would need to do to adapt it.

  • April 17, 2010 at 3:24 pm

Dude, you should totally make this a Flash Game!

  • BladeTwinSwords

    April 21, 2010 at 3:51 am

A board game based on Pit Fighter? I bet you don’t even get health back in that one.

  • TheValsalvaManeuver

    April 24, 2010 at 2:37 am

This brings back memories. My sister and I used to make our own board games. I don’t think we ever actually played them though… most of the entertainment was in making the games themselves. We also used to make our own comics. For a while, I was convinced that if they were good enough, Marvel or DC would publish them!

Yeah, making your own (dead hard-random) boardgame was a blast as a kid! Me and a friend made this mammoth of a game that took about 2x2meters and was way too long and punishing to play through. But we kept adding branches and extentions all the time anyway. Good times!

When i was 8 or so i had made a giant board game/trading card/rpg game. the game was you were a king and you had to roll dice to move around this giant board and collect fighter and equipment cards by visitng towns and beating other players. if you and another player were within like 5 or so tiles of each other you had to play the card game, loser lost a random card. i never got round to finishing it though. thanks for the nostalgia!

  • Indeterminacy

    May 11, 2010 at 3:11 am

You know, James, a simple Save Throw mechanism on your falls would have made this an entirely workable game! I wonder if your kid self would have thought of that, or if he really was just an asshole.

Coincidence that Deadly Danger Dungeon makes me think of Deadly Towers? I had deadly towers the entire time I have ever owned a Nintendo and I never got ANYWHERE in it, and not for lack of trying. I think your board game is the sequel.

  • J-Smash

    May 17, 2010 at 10:25 pm

Mario must have been plumbing Bowsers shiter when he got pushed down, which would make Deadly Danger Dungeon the sewer system below Bowser’s castle. You should add this to the beginning of the instruction manual.

  • May 21, 2010 at 7:02 pm

Have you ever made a board game based on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade?

  • May 22, 2010 at 3:56 am

Back in sixth grade, I had to make my own board game for an architecture class…or whatever it was…anyway, it was this game where you had to go into the pharaohs tomb and get the treasure, and there were traps all over the place and different characters with different stats and enemies you had to fight in a turnbased rpg fashion, and everything…and when it came time to test everyones games, I was mocked…like I always was, because that school was full of assholes who hated geeks like me and anyone else who dared to be different and mock their way of life…so, I was given a mediocre grade because part of the grading was that everyone else had to like it, and since no one liked me, my grade was low…ahh, good times…back in the days that made me the evil sadistic person I am today…but, I still come up with games from time to time

I wasn’t old enough for the board game craze; I grew up with shitty trading card games all around me. But I did make a really popular trading card game. I’m pretty sure it was called “Battlemagic” or something, and had monsters and stuff. Everyone made their own cards, and it was insanely hard to even finish a match between people because of it.

I got SO FUCKING CLOSE to winning. I had the key and the magic talisman, and I had one roll away from winning… DEATHFUCKINGTRAP! That is AWESOME – I thought I was the only person who ever tried to make his own board game: when I was like twelve or something, I made this board game for all of my Godzilla action figures, with them as the player pieces, and all the evil monsters were bosses you had to fight, should you land on a boss square and draw one of them out of the boss pile – even the army as a whole was its own boss, with my little military toys being that game piece. The goal was to make it to monster island, and the battling was all dice based, but just like what you said about all these games you made it pretty much sucked ass.
Fucking love Godzilla, though… Spacegodzilla was my favorite enemy…

In the words of Ricky Bobby, “It’s not worth a velvet painting of a dolphan and a whale getting it on!”

I so totally made some board games when i was a kid, too! I only remember one specifically – a halloween themed one, with skeletons, Dracula, ghosts, and the goal was to get the giant pot of gold inside the haunted house. It spanned 2 taped-together pages of 80s printer paper (that my parents would bring home from work to give us to draw on), and was a curvy, but linear path, with typical go back a few spaces, go forward a few spaces, lose a turn, back to start, all the basics. But i had drawings of all those monsters and a huge pot of gold with gleaming gold-crayon coins, haha. We even stored it in an old “The Bay” gift box – a clothing department store in Canada, in one of those boxes you never want to see under giftwrap on christmas morning because you know it’s going to be clothes … except there’s home video from 1985, when i was 5, of me being excited to get clothes, even so far as to once say, “I hope it’s a package of clothes, again!” I was always an odd kid, i guess i’m genetically more inclined to want to be in control of how i look. *shrugs*
Anyhoo, i ramble, awesome review. I much enjoy Board James, as it lets me play along to games i’d always seen advertised on TV and wanted, but never owned or got to play. Though this particular one doesn’t count, i’m speaking of Mouse Trap (which i never owned, but saw a friend “trip”) and Fire Ball Island (which always got my attention as a kid, but i never personally saw).

  • December 14, 2010 at 10:59 am

This reminds me of games my younger brother use to make, when he was a little kid. He would make huge games, something like that Weapons & Warriors game, out of cardboard and paper. These games were enormous, with mazes, buildings, custom characters, and of course, very strange rules. Some of them actually made sense. To bad I don’t remember any of them specifically. He was always trying to gain my attention, since we were the only two kids my parents produced, and I was a rebellious teenager wanting to do ‘grown up’ stuff. Not kid stuff. However, I did play with him quite a bit. It was fun.

I’m thinking of making a version of this game in Roblox… and including an “if (player.UserId = placeCreator)” subroutine in the dice algorithm so that I never land on an instadeath space. Maybe expand it so anyone who coughs up 15 Robux for the VIP Shirt is safe from them too.

And for even more mua-ha-ha, create an inverse of it so that Guests and Banned Users land on nothing but instadeath spaces.

hey, just wanted to say that i’m really impressed with the creativity you and your neighbors showed making those games. They were awesome looking though incomprehensible. I think the next time i hang out w/ my nerdiest of friends i’m gonna suggest we make our own game. Thanks for some inspiration.

I used to draw board games, every kid with half an imagination probably did.

I recall making a particularly weird one themed around feet, which my retarded child mind had decided were an inherently funny body part on that particular day. It was basically like deadly danger dungeon, with feet stamping on you and killing you on about half the squares, plus other dangers like being suffocated to death by smelly socks.

Lol me and a friend of mine also made a lot of board games when we were kids. Most of them sucked, but I remember some of them being good. Recently I found one of them but I have no idea how to play it. It’s some kind of a mix between Parcheesi and Dungeons&Dragons but the specific rules are gone forever.

you should make this an actual board game with colored artwork and an actual game piece and maybe make it so multiple people can play at once

I tried to build this boardgame in Super Mario Maker -> but during this project I realized how limited the “game” is… 1AB1-000-0025-AE49

This is funny. I made a Twin Peaks game once. It had things like “dead body” cards and “Agent Dale Cooper has a dream; lose a turn”…
