If your ever in NY city, check out BARCADE. It is a bar in the lower side of Manhattan that is filled with old arcade games (2x6s in between each console to rest your drink). Awesome time, drunk, joystick glory.

    April 8, 2010 at 2:44 am

    wow thats alot of consoles

now its been more than a month since last video so exceptions will be high.

anyways i have downloaded a emulator and been playing games hoperly find a really crappy one for you to review, you should review Big rigs over the top racing on PC being the second worst game ever thats right rated 2nd to superman 64.

Atari made a Home Pong, then they made a color ones called Super Pong but Sears made a clone of both Pongs. I love a new Cinemassacre page! James Rolfe have a another makeover!

    April 8, 2010 at 6:06 am

  • April 8, 2010 at 7:32 am

wow..the last console(w. the gun and the wheel) blows my mind..i would have been king on my block with this thing back then…

  • Drytf

    April 8, 2010 at 8:08 am

The new Cinemassacre Site is awesome. Congratulations James for the new site.

AVGN is the best series on the Internet. James Rolfe is tha man!

  • April 8, 2010 at 1:45 pm

I’ve checked back here every day maybe twice a day for two weeks. >: The pong review was delightful, but I feel like… I may have an addiction to webseries and when they don’t update for over a month I go loco.

james, i just watched this again since you guys revamped the website. i think this is one of your best reviews yet. it was hilarious and very informative. i can’t wait to see what you’ve got for us next month.

  • April 9, 2010 at 8:40 pm

btw i agree with Bebeness, i’ve been checking your website like five times a day. i know there won’t be any new nerd stuff. but i am totally addicted to all of your webseries’ and i am satisfied with anything/everything you post… and if there’s nothing new i always watch something i’ve seen before. it never gets old.

  • April 10, 2010 at 12:45 am

I like this video,my favorite part is where you said”And then, they made another one,and another, and another one,and another one,and another one,and another one”.

  • PickledPlatinum

    April 10, 2010 at 12:46 am

It’s interesting, considering the fact that the video is linked to the gametrailers page, most people are probably leaving their comments there.

    April 11, 2010 at 8:25 pm

Let me say “Hell yeah” to that suggestion of a video on R.O.B. That was such a key piece of marketing in the early days of the NES, and it only had support of two games, both terrible. You could do a lengthy, lengthy video on R.O.B., bringing the lulz with a vengeance.

    April 12, 2010 at 2:34 am

holy crap when the new site came here all the commets where gone but now for this one it got more than before!

  • Edward

    April 14, 2010 at 7:02 pm

Haha. Digital Ping-Pong! Never new that pong was so popular to remake back then. And you know what? It has never died. I’ve bumped into several pong remakes for Atari, Commodore, Nintendo, PC… Heck, I’ve seen one or two Pong mods for First Person Shooters (Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2 is one). Wonder if you’ll take up the Break-Out games? I have this feeling it was evolved from pong (or that hand/squash ball game thingy).

    April 25, 2010 at 10:56 pm

    Okay episode.
Its been over a month without a new episode.

Hope he doesn’t forget his roots.

  • RedAssFan

    April 26, 2010 at 9:21 am

    Great, as always!

  • Kajiri

    April 27, 2010 at 12:38 am

Wait, “forget his roots”? You do know that the AVGN is a character he created, which came from his love of cinema, which he’s had… His entire life? I’m guessing his “roots” go back a bit further than 2004.

  • Tenacious Lee

    April 27, 2010 at 5:44 am

    Here we go.
Kajiri I’m pretty sure you didn’t start watching James because of his early film.
You watched the AVGN in 2004.
I’m not saying his projects aren’t still great.
I’m just stating the fact that I hope he doesn’t become too sidetracked with all these other projects that he doesn’t keep supplying his fanbase with what they originally starting watching for.
I’m not being an asshole so you don’t have to “defend” anyone.
The truth of the matter is, he said one a month and its been over a month.

  • CR055H41RZ

    April 27, 2010 at 2:00 pm

come on whats with the big hold-up? you got like 800 fucking games in there just close your eyes & pick one out!

  • Nobody's Angel

    April 27, 2010 at 9:05 pm

Where you not paying attention to the comments above? To the extent of my knowledge, all the AVGN reviews have been put on hold till May. I guess if you want to look on the bright side, May is not that far away.

  • bleach318

    April 28, 2010 at 9:52 pm

wow that was hilarious lol avgn you made my life have meaning again and im 16

  • Kajiri

    April 29, 2010 at 4:33 pm

    @Tenacious Lee

Just because I haven’t been watching his creations until I discovered them on the internet doesn’t mean he didn’t exist.

Making videos simply to supply a fanbase is one of the worst concepts in existence. Granted, this is how his internet fame began, and he usually responds to his fans very well, but that doesn’t mean he needs to cater to the internet for his entire life.

He can’t exactly be “sidetracked” from the AVGN, seeing as how it was never his main focus to begin with.

In short, look at everything else he’s doing. Considering the fact that he must lead a busy life, and he probably takes time to enjoy these movies and games that got him started on all of this in the first place, it’s rather amazing that he’s still making AVGN videos at all.

The truth of the matter is, it’s not like he owes anyone these videos, it’s just another project. He will start and stop it whenever he wants.

  • MyNaMEIsSliMShadY

    May 1, 2010 at 3:53 pm

I agree with you mate, he’s probably busy with a lot of other shit. Besides, he’s just posted yesterday so he hasn’t given up on AVGN obviousely.

To Tenacious Lee, why not look into his other projects, because they’re just as good as AVGN, and those kick ass 🙂

    May 24, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Fixing the TV4 console with the broken-off fork shouldn’t be hard, actually. The fork is just a convenience for attaching the bare wire to your TV–stripping the wire back a little and wrapping the exposed end around the screw on the TV should work equally well. The wire looks like it’s stranded, so you could even make a fork out of the wire strands, if you wanted to.

I really liked the triangular spaceship dash. People get bored and have to make these things, right? I mean come on! You know some guy MUST have been, “Imma make this thing and see how many retards will buy it thinking it’s awesome. Ten bucks says it will profit!”

  • drinkingNsmoking

“And tell that box, to go fuck it’s self!”

Great review! That nintendo one looks funky as shit in the bright orange colour scheme. Makes a cool break from cartridges.

    “Now the colour comes on!?”

  • mrCrumpet

    May 30, 2010 at 5:31 am

I felt sad just looking at those old systems. I’m glad those things didn’t exist in my childhood. I’m about the same age as the AVGN, so I grew up with NES, Vic20/C64,128, Spectrum (LOL), Amstrad (ROFL), Megadrive/Genesis. My childhood wasn’t that bad, I guess. At least there were 8-bit consoles, color graphics, and some pretty cool music. My favorite was C64 with its SID chip. Some of the tunes from that thing still rock my socks off today. (Check out VVVVVV (distrationware.com) for a good modern example.)

Remember in the Godzilla review, the AVGN said he was born too early because games these days are just so much better. Man, I feel like that too. I wish I was born now and got to grow up with all the awesome games being made now. But, shit, after watching this video, I thank my lucky stars that I wasn’t born 10 or 15 years earlier than I was. OMG, I feel so sorry for people who had to grow up with wooden pong consoles and connectors you screw into the TV. Are you fucking serious?

  • June 2, 2010 at 2:52 pm

In response to mrCrumpet above, I wouldn’t say I feel sad that I “missed out” on current systems such as the XBOX 360, Playstation 3 and up, and the Wii. Though I’ve had the chance to play all of them, I don’t own any of them, and that’s fine. I enjoy them, yet I’m glad I had the chance to grow up with the original NES, Sega Genesis, Sega Master System, and even the Atari 2600. I think it gives me an appreciation for where video games started off, even though there are much more realistic and advanced games now.

  • XxL337-GAMERxX

    June 3, 2010 at 6:25 am

in response to both of you, ARE YOU KIDDING??!! You’re both so lucky to have grown up with the classic gaming consoles, i’m 13 and sure i have an xbox360 and a wii, but i was born too late. i want to go back in time and grow up with those consoles, i had a genisis when i was 2, so i dont really have any fond memories of it, then i got a ps1 and grew up with that and ps2 aswell. your both luck

  • June 4, 2010 at 6:23 pm

Hey L337 – not trying to start a debate here, but just to clarify – I was actually saying that I’m thankful to have grown up with the Atari 2600 and original NES. Maybe the “realistic” action games didn’t exist back then, but I absolutely loved the old classics like Pac Man, Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, and Space Invaders. And though I sometimes play games like Guitar Hero now, I still have a fond place in my memory for those classic originals.

  • XxL337-GAMERxX

  • Strazdas

    June 9, 2010 at 7:56 am

Your face at the end was simply amazing…..

  • June 11, 2010 at 5:58 pm

    PONG rocks. Love this game.
It’s funny even 12 year old 3d spoiled kids love playing this game and it really is fun.

Now I have to nerd a little sharing wisdumb…:
Wanna know how that wire works electricity comes down, video signal goes up? Simple enough: The video signal is a low voltage (<1V) AC signal modulated about 70-80 MHz (+-) and the electricity is an unmodulated DC signal. This means, the box filters out the DC signal and sends the pure video signal to the TV and the console gets the electricity and modulates the video signal onto the DC current. It would even work with AC, because of the different frequencies. Ever wondered why your TV can receive more than one programme through the same wire? But explaining how THIS works is serious shit.
By the way, notice the box at the end of the NES/SNES RC cable? It works the same way: The console sends the video signal up there plus the electricity for the box to work (thats why you get poor picture quality when you try to use a cable without the box).

    Another thing:
The Fairchild Channel F actually has a CPU. And it runs at 2 MHz. That was monstrous these days (1977). Also it has Video RAM. Another fun fact about this console: You can change cartridges without turning it off
(this works about 9 out of 10 times)

Yeah I talk much when the day's long but before you complain…you dont have to read it.

I love the AVGN. I was born in 96 and i have a super nintendo (that my dad owned) and i still love to play it. I have a PS3 which i also love, but the classics will always have a place in my heart. I also have many other nintendo systems, even the wii. Modern games are great. But the classics will always be… well, the classics.

  • volt28

    June 28, 2010 at 2:29 am

I still play video games. I grew up with nintendo, genisis and atari . I had fun playing them. Hours were lost playing sonic, mario, zelda and toe jam and earl. I still lose hours playing now.
1.) its 3 am. I laughed for like 5 miniutes when you were like ” give this to your friend. Fuck you this is all you get. I’m in control” Like rotflmfao.
2.) You expression at the end to the 360. Classic.

  • BananaJello

    July 1, 2010 at 5:35 pm

My parents had the AV Tv Fun console. It was actually pretty cool. I don’t know if ours was a “deluxe” edition, but it came with a gun, so it had the 4 pong games plus 2 skeet games. What was nice about those old consoles is that you could fix the controllers with a soldering gun, since they were analog. My dad must have rebuilt those paddles about a dozen times. Same thing with the atari consoles. You could actually remove the casing and have what basically amounted to a poor man’s game pad, although the atari 2600 had a 9 pin serial port which was the same standard used on the genesis and the commodore systems like the c64 and Amiga, so all the controllers were interchangable, something that would never happen today.

I found a Radio Shack TV Scoreboard at a flea market a long time ago. Amazingly, it worked after I went through the pain in the ass to set it up. I didn’t have any color to my knowledge, but it came with a gun.

Great video as always. I didn’t know half of these consoles existed.

  • Lodmot

    July 26, 2010 at 8:03 am

I just bought an APF TV Fun console at a flea market this past Saturday. The thing was mad dusty, and my dad was certain it wouldn’t worked. But I hooked it up and sure enough, the console played great. I was surprised at the perfect picture clarity. The only problem the system had was one of the controllers had cut wires on the inside, which I was able to fix.

    That final console…
Imagine sitting in a room. You have no idea where you are or how you got there. There are no windows, no ventilation ducts. The only light sputters weakly from a bare, flickering bulb overhead. It’s musty, smells of mold and there are suspicious stains on the floor that trail to a drain in the center.
You try to move, only to find your hands and legs are restrained with leather cuffs. Through the walls you can here what sound like muffled screams. You are terrified. The door directly in front of you opens and three hooded figures enter, the third one wheeling a creaky metal cart. They stop a few feet in and start talking in low tones. Your blood is pounding in your ears and you can only make out a few words: “organs,” “peeling,” “messy,” “machine…”
Two figures leave. The third wheels the cart closer to you and stops a few feet away. He is breathing heavily and you can smell sweat – his or yours or both you’re not sure. He moves his head to within a few inches of yours and looks into your–
aw, screw it. That thing looks like a torture device.

And then there is ANOTHER ONE (Interton VC3000)
    and ANOTHER ONE (both selfbuilt):

check for the smallest game of PONG on the smallest console built yet.
(no, it’s quite easy to make an even smaller one)

Btw if the ball goes through the paddle, try resetting. My console starts up with 15:15 and does that. Hit reset and it works. Most of the consoles use the same chip AY-8500. The color games use AY-8503. Games that look entirely different don’t use that chip.
And yes. My VC3000 is broken and you have to put it in the freezer if you want it to work for even a minute.

We owned the Telstar growing up. Here’s a link to a picture of us playing. I remember having lots of fun with it. If I remember correctly, it had regular pong, hockey and tennis. We didn’t mind the built in controllers.

I’m 17 just now, I’m so much younger then You nad James but I feel I was born too freakin’ later. I grew up with SNES emulator and this system is my favourite console EVER! Those games for PS3 are just not so interesting in my opinion.

I actually got a Radio Shack Electronic TV Scoreboard. When I bought it and got home I opened the battery compartment, it had the same batteries that came with the system. After cleaning it out it works like its brand new! Just out of curiousity, were you able to find an adapter its compatible with? Radio Shack looked up the SKU , and to no surprise it doesnt exist in there inventory anymore.

@realitysmaster I know what you mean, dude. I see these games almost all the time since the Star Wars type of games in 2005 with the release of Revenge of the Sith.

5:23- I don’t understand the science to that, either.

5:49- “…like some deformed Siamese twin or something. You ever see BasketCase? Well, whatever.”

“The controllers dismount, and you have a nice tray to hold your beer. F#ck, almost.” I love that line. XD

The TelStar Arcade DOES look madning.

  • Ronin

    January 16, 2011 at 10:55 pm

James, sorry to bump such an old video, but if you read this could you clarify something for me?

When you show the Fairchild Channel F, you insert Videocard 3, which I’ve learned is Blackjack. Is pong on there as well, or was that just something to do with editing?

I just got an old Sears Pong console, similar to yours, and we had a blast playing around with it. I’d really love to get my hands on that Channel F, it looks intense.

Keep up the great work, can’t wait for the next episode.

This is one of my favorite episodes because he plays gta4 on xbox 360 and he tells that box to go fuck itself

  • April 2, 2011 at 8:05 pm

ya know, if he wanted to play the tv4 four way video game console he could have just replaced the spade connector on the end! I mean i know it was supposed to be funny but still, it’s about $2 for a bag of spade connectors! Or he could just of even cut the box off and wired on a coaxial cable to the game system. But that does not take away from the fact that he’s still the fucking nerd!

The Fairchild Channel F has two built-in games that come on if there’s no cartridge in. One is Pong (which is not as much fun, because of the digital controls and the huge pixels) and the other is Hockey or Soccer (which is the one James referred to).
James does not exaggerate when he says that it is intense. It’s fucking awesome!
I found my Channel F in the dump, the previous owner cut off the controllers so I had to reverse-engineer the connection.

Now my Channel F takes Atari Controllers! And four of them! Now you can play this game with four players. Played it for hours!

Another thing about the Fairchild: It uses a CPU at 2 MHz and you can plug the games in and out without turning it off. Plug’n’Play, Motherfucker!

Btw. got me a Pong Console off eBay, made by Intel!
(no its not the same Intel that makes microprocessors)

Hey James, I had a problem with one of those boxes in my childhood (the fork that goes into the tv was broken), so I cut it and left just the cables, and then I inserted them into the screws of the tv and ta-da, it worked, so that could be a way to use the “broken” pong console

I just got my hands on an original Japanese FAMICOM, and it actually works on my Sony HD TV! I’ve had a lot of fun with it so far, and  I know Japanese pretty well, so I always feel kinda accomplished when I can read most of what it says. 😀

  • December 16, 2012 at 11:00 am

Asshole Pong! Haha! I saw in the background that you had all the different King Kong formats on a shelf. This must have been shot that same exact day. The ending always cracks me up in this! Whoever says that the nerd is getting less funny is totally wrong because this is one of the best nerd episodes of all time! Great video, James!

Watching this video makes me think about how Minecraft is going through a similar phase. Such a simple idea but it’s outselling every other franchise or huge budget game. Very interesting trend.

I actually have a Fairchild Channel F model II in my collection of games, and even an Atari Video Pinball console, though a diode snapped off, and I have to find a new circuit board for it because of this.

  • Slyjay

    July 12, 2013 at 3:55 am

That was a cool video. Didn’t know there was so many pong systems! Crazy. I played it on Atari when I was a kid. It does get jittery because of the paddle!

  • August 7, 2013 at 8:05 am

    I want a sears super pong telegame…

  • August 15, 2013 at 9:57 am

The TV4 part always upsets me a little, you can just peel the cable thats missing the “pitchfork” and just wrap it around the screw on the tv and screw it, it works the same way.

  • September 9, 2013 at 7:06 pm

    I played pong…..it was easy

  • September 28, 2013 at 2:35 pm

i have one of these pong consoles

  • December 31, 2013 at 3:38 am

Or like the modern PS4 controller that has a built in mic that seems to do better than the Wiimote’s, even though both consoles have most of their sound coming from the TV.

hehehe, good old times, by the way, i got a audiosonic pp-795

but i can’t find any information about it?
i bought it at a market for 30 euro’s (inside the box, clean, and in brand new state, dust-free still works fine (holy shit) ). it works on loose cardriges, i only got the 10 in 1 supersports (i guess just the starter pack) and 2 joysticks. works on a antenne/coax plug, and guess what, 6 c batteries. or a 9 volt dc adapter (not included).

anyone else knows about this thing? is it rare in a good or in a bad way?

  • Joseph Gregorowicz

    July 30, 2015 at 2:05 am

For the record, the 300 ohm “pitch fork” connections didn’t necessarily require having both connected to the screws. (Come on, who hasn’t daisy-chained those motherfucking boxes so they don’t have to connect and disconnect old systems?) While having oth tightly secured ideal, for review purposes (an basic playing purpose), one will suffice if the other is torn off.

I’ve also had the pleasure of connecting them as bare wires. Fun times.

  • October 26, 2015 at 12:56 pm

Hey Nerd since you did the Pong consoles you also should do that latest Pong game for PS1.

  • June 13, 2016 at 6:31 pm

I just love the ACGN !!! it’s so funny XD, anyway, I just posted this because you hate the screw to tv thing and I remembered these things, you can even screw the loose wires without the forks
    keep the good work !!!
