    April 8, 2010 at 10:28 pm

Heh…reminds me of what I used to do to my friends during a late night D&D session.
    @Zat Wideboy
The dragon flamed them to hell?

  • Flammenwerfer

    April 9, 2010 at 7:01 am

Haha, somehow the floating head on the VHS tape reminds me of Trickster from Brainscan (the movie).

  • April 9, 2010 at 10:20 pm

I think both this and Spoony’s riffing on the VHS each give its own view of the game itself, and they’re both very funny!

At 7:57, why do I got to be the wizard, he sucks!

  • goldenbane

    April 11, 2010 at 12:21 pm

I’d love to see James and Mother Fucker Mike play this, or some of the other Dungeons and Dragons-like games out there. (Hero Quest, Weapons and Warriors, maybe even Dungeons and Dragons itself, ect.)

  • goldenbane

    April 11, 2010 at 12:22 pm

D’oh…they already played Weapons and Warriors…crap..that wasn’t the game I was thinking of, lol. Whoops.

  • Espenoz

    May 23, 2010 at 9:37 pm

The warrior is Deron McBee a.k.a Malibu from American Gladiators. He looks like a joke, but he`s probably a legend judging from this:

    May 24, 2010 at 5:07 pm

DragonStrike is a quest to give a shit about the quest. That pretty much sums it up.

Wow. I never had that game when I was a kid, but now I definitely want a copy of that tape.

Whoa! When i saw this Vid, I was Stoked! I loved that sweet ass Dragon Strike video:) Well the other day i was checking out thrift store for cool VHS tapes, i found VR Troopers, WMCA Masters, Excalibur…… and then when I couldn’t think it could get any sweeter….. There it was, the Fuckin’ Dragon Strike Tape!!!!!! I got on here watched this vid again, cause i love it James, and registered…. what a pass code you gave me (fuck!) Now i am going to pop that bad motherfucker in the vcr and have a blast! I got it for $1.25! I totally ripped that thrift store off!!!!

Take Care Everybody…and thank you James for making such sweet videos πŸ™‚

Speaking of “video games”, I was wondering if anyone else has ever played one of the nightmare games? My friends and I thought they were pretty neat as children, but trying to play one of them these days just left us all in laughter. ANSWER ME! πŸ˜›

  • deadbabies

    June 10, 2010 at 12:52 pm

Mostly unrelated, but, for some reason, I have this permanent memory etched in my head of renting the Dragonstrike NES game. I would play it for 30 seconds, and for some reason, the damn game made my eyes hurt from eyestrain or rage after only 20 minutes of play. That whole night was my 8-year-old self’s constant struggle to get back to the TV to try to beat it. My parents put me to bed because my eyes were bloodshot.

Now I can’t see the Dragonstrike logo without experiencing that flush of pain.

  • deadbabies

    June 10, 2010 at 12:53 pm

30 seconds? Oh man, I need to not watch videos first thing after waking up and then write comments.

  • deadbabies

    June 10, 2010 at 1:02 pm

DAMN IT After watching it, I had to leave another comment.

Have you guys ever experienced “NIGHTMARE: The VHS Board Game.” My experience with it turned into a ritual with a friend and I. Whenever we had nothing to watch or play, we would just pop in the VHS from it and laugh as we watched it straight through. I dunno James, if you have it, I recommend doing it as a review.

  • kaenon

    June 18, 2010 at 10:32 am

james if i was born where you were and i was as old as you i definantly would have played that with ya. ive watched the VHS tape, but ive never played the game since all the pieces were lost by the time i got old enough to play it. Im the type of person who uses his imagination for almost anything just for humor, so that gmae was perfect for me. To tell ya the truth though i used to always think it was called dungeons and dragons, but o well. everyone has their differences.

  • Miles Tormani

    June 18, 2010 at 12:57 pm

I always liked how clips from the VHS were taken and edited in such a way that it sounds like James is having a conversation with the characters in the video. “Okay, there’s someone at the window. What do you want me to do about it? Cast a… death spell on them?” “Of course! :D”

The Rocky (SMS) video had this as well, and it’s pulled off quite well. Props.

  • Mingoo3

    July 3, 2010 at 3:29 pm

lol when you got to the “Crap” part I broke down laughin.

  • July 8, 2010 at 5:28 pm

The barbarian was probably a film student who dabbled in glamor rock. Where can you get a wig like that? I’d totally have stuck around and played it with you.

I laughed about everyone else having to leave a room. It is basically the best excuse to run and never turn back.

  • makinpeoplefamous

    July 11, 2010 at 8:24 pm

Correct me if I’m wrong…but the Warrior guy…

He was on an episode of Married with Children as the male stripper dressed up a cop in one episode.

Plus, if I know right, that guy was in some soft core, low budget style adult films.

    …just an observation.

  • mad2physicist

    July 16, 2010 at 4:04 pm

This game appears to be basically a rip-off of dungeons and dragons. Or maybe the other way around, since now D&D is played with miniatures but it used to be played more by pure imagination and description. So perhaps D&D knocked off this game!
the main difference seems to be that this game lacks a lot of the role-playing aspect and the long-term character development, as well as lacking any long-term questing.
Also D&D has thankfully avoided the glam-rock porn star warrior on film.

  • July 29, 2010 at 9:44 am

Lol that looks like the shit. And fuck it i’ll play dragonstrike with you ha i’d be pretty pissed off if everyone tried to leave i’d be like I JUST SET THIS SHIT UP NOW SIT THE FUCK DOWN

  • pbboogie

    July 30, 2010 at 12:10 pm

The warrior’s claim to fame was that he was Malibu from the first season of American Gladiators. This was Malibu in a nutshell,

  • DarkNeonRain

    August 22, 2010 at 11:41 am

Yeah take that you f***ing teletubby

  • Albylion

    September 15, 2010 at 11:07 pm

Holy fuck. Somebody else had this game? Glad I’m not the only one who noticed the Crap cards. To this day, I still say, “Oooh! I’m shaking in my boots!” You’re my hero, James.

  • Cimmerian_Dragon

    September 16, 2010 at 1:57 am

I just noticed the Key to the Kingdom box in the closet. For the love of Godzilla, you’ve got to feature that game in an episode! A Temple of Martyrs! Whirlpool warp gates! What’s not to love?

  • Fizban

    September 16, 2010 at 2:16 am

I agree with a previous post that this is a reminder of Nightmare. I think the game would be a hilarious Halloween board james episode. It screams cinematic cheese factor. Apparently they even saw fit for a sequel…”YES MY GATE KEEPER!”

  • September 16, 2010 at 3:07 pm

It would’ve been great to see you actually play the game, but i guess noone wanted to play it πŸ˜€

  • September 18, 2010 at 7:23 am

    good one

  • mattyt

    September 24, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Wait a minute, wasn’t this game advertised on the back of almost every comic book during the 90’s? I remember having copies of Captain America, Spider Man, Iron Man, and X-men with this on the back. I think it was made by a company named TSR if I’m not mistaken. Wow, what a trip.

  • gaobo

    September 28, 2010 at 2:45 am

what is the song used right when james opens the closet??

  • GunParade

    October 27, 2010 at 1:21 am

the warrior is awesome in “curb your enthusiasm,” he says something like, “i’m gonna make you poop your bald pants,” comic gold.

  • November 13, 2010 at 12:11 pm

Wow, this is the first time I’ve been able to say this with such certainty- my friends growing up were cooler than your friends! πŸ˜€

That’s right, I was the dragon master running the game during middle school daycare after school. I still have the video and a few pieces of the game, but unfortunately most of it has been lost. πŸ™

What’s left is tucked in a The Classic Dungeon box with what remains of Hero Quest.

Maybe you have better friends now that would play with you? πŸ˜‰ Pro tip: tempt them with some beer first. πŸ˜‰

Anyways, great video! The Warrior rocking out made me LOL.

  • metal0737

    November 13, 2010 at 1:43 pm

Nobody wants to play. Too nerdy huh?

  • Freddie83

    November 16, 2010 at 12:20 pm

I’m actually shocked that James didn’t make mention of the fact that the main guy behind the video (and also behind the warrior classes in the game) was Flint *G.I. Joe, Transformers, Visionaries, Inhumanoids* Dille. That guy was one of Sunbow’s main braintrust writer’s in the 80’s, and is still a cool cat today. Just kinda shocked that james didn’t mention it in the vid.

  • IdealIdeas91

    November 16, 2010 at 3:32 pm

    this is nowhere near new.

  • November 16, 2010 at 3:35 pm

This is an awesome game!, but I really prefer the impossible Mario Bros

  • November 16, 2010 at 4:17 pm

Would you be willing to upload the entire video form the game it seems rather lulzy?

  • charmaster

Anyone else remember seeing ads for this in comics? It’s all over anything published by Marvel in the early 90s.

  • Shadow

    November 16, 2010 at 6:52 pm

Why is this on the homepage? It’s an old episode.

  • SodamYat

    November 16, 2010 at 7:09 pm

It’s on the frontpage because it kicks ass; now lay off! I actually hadn’t seen this one, and it happens to be a game I own. I actually have the video on DVD (it’s a bootleg) ’cause my VHS got eaten by an old tape rewinder (anybody remember those things?)

This game actually kind of sucked, and no one would ever play it with you. It was also impossibly hard to take the video seriously, even as a kid. Everything about the game was just vague and poorly explained. As a kid, I didn’t get it. As an adult, it’s not that cool anymore.

Even so, it’s just one of those things that you keep around to show off how much of a nerd you are to your friends.

P.S. Alright… I’ll be the wizard… but I’m not wearing a wolf on my head.

  • christburner

    November 16, 2010 at 7:33 pm

@ SadomYat…..dude..i picked up an old VHS rewinder not to long ago..there is nothing like watching (the) Empire (strikes back) and rewinding Evil Dead 2 simultaneously !!!…

  • November 16, 2010 at 8:45 pm

I miss playing board games! I remember when I used to cry over Snakes and Ladders LOL How pathetic is that?

  • November 16, 2010 at 8:59 pm

@paisan13 Good eye! That is indeed Malibu, also known as Deron McBee. He was well-known at the time for his various bit-roles in television series, and a number of films over his career, films both famous and relatively unknown.

  • realitysmaster

    November 16, 2010 at 9:51 pm

It may be old buy damn it is funny. I had this same board game too. I watched the video more than I played the game. All of my friends were too stupid to play and don’t get me started on my sister.

  • ryancoke

    November 16, 2010 at 10:03 pm

looks a lot like heroquest. It was impossible to get some dudes together to play it properly. I had more fun designing dungeons than actually playing

  • November 17, 2010 at 2:55 am

    Can’t help laughing…

  • November 17, 2010 at 3:03 am

yeah i agree with most people here. great episode (dragon strike is a very nostalgic game and i love it to death) but why is it on the front page? I got excited and expected a part 2 (pleasseeeee) to Board James’ Dragon Strike but alas… So… im confused.

  • Eelco

    November 17, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Is this a game that came out before Hero Quest?!
I also had troubles with that game finding people who wanted to play with me…yeah, it traumatized my childhood πŸ™‚

  • SpeedyEric

    November 17, 2010 at 3:55 pm

Spoony of the Spoony Experiment has done his own video on Dragon Strike, but I like this one better.

I agree that the game looks complicated. The only RPGs that are easy for me to play are video games like the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games.

5:23- The Warrior looks like if Dorthy and the Cowardly Lion had a kid. I apologise to anyone I gave the image of that to anyone reading this.

So how about I was just watching Married…With Children. It’s the episode where Al buys Peggy some lingerie for her birthday to cheer her up. The doorbell rings and a cop is there who turns out (obviously) to be a stripper. And who’s that stripper? Yep! The warrior from the Dragonstrike VHS tape. How’s THAT for a career that took off!

    June 29, 2011 at 6:14 pm

  • MDWallstreet

    June 30, 2011 at 12:17 am

Why do you waste your time making these videos? overanalyzers and ninja turtles included. You say you are too busy to make new AVGN, but your too busy because your wasting your time making these inferior videos. They were cool when they were videos on the side of AVGN, which is the series everyone wants to see.AVGN creeated the avenue for you to showcase your other talents, but now your focusing way too much on the other stuff, and not enough time on the original thing that brought you the most success, your most popular series. and I know your working on a movie too. The NES punk has mini reviews, maybe you should think about doing some of those, just to keep the AVGN fans saitiated.

I actually got this game for christmas when I was a younger .. I opened it once tryed to play with few friends with no sucess.. Could be a good game I like D&D and all the work is done for you, you just have to play. But couldn’t get anyone interested enough to play it.

Actually fairly new board game I have discovered that is fun it Arkham Horror.. it’s made by Fantasy Flight Games, They have been making tons of awsome board games.

Using a death spell on Po? The blonde dude from American Gladiators killing a scorpion with it’s own venom ( wouldn’t it be immune to it as it is produced in it’s own body)? Glam metal? Types of crap…
Wow, this is so… AWESOME. But I don’t want to be the wizard.

@MDWallstreet Wow, you gotta to be a real asshole to write something like this. You come here, watch all the videos for free and dare to complain and tell James what to do??? AVGN has no fucking duty to please you and can waste his time on whatever he wants, if you dont like the video – dont watch it. Who do you think you are? Besides – learn to read cause this video is 2 years old…

I remember a kid at the babysitter’s house had this and it looked too huge and daunting to try. So we just played nintendo instead!

My brothers and I played the living hell out of this game (also HeroQuest and a few others of its ilk). We were lucky to have friends who had the patience to get into this crazy shit.

I find your edits with the DragonMaster video funny as hell. Even as a kid I could tell that guy was overacting in a way that would make Shatner tell him to tone it down a notch.

I also used to torture players by making them watch the damn video while I set up the game too. We pretty much had that totally ridiculous video memorized. This game still remains one of the things I wish I’d kept over the years.

Any chance of doing any kind of advanced game like this where you actually play it? HeroQuest was a cock tease on that front. πŸ˜›

When he asks if he should cast a death spell and the guy replies, “Of Course”, the floating head sounded like Christopher Walken XD

Blade Crap: That’s what happens if you eat razor blades for breakfast…

Jaws-of-Death-Crap…well, that’s what happens if you’re trying to poop into a piranha pond.

Whew electrical crap…only thing I can think about involves electric eels, so little creativity here.

When I first watched this I LMAO.

Bought this on eBay and it really is a lot of fun. You get to make up what your character does. As long as everyone agrees, the rules are your own in play.

Hey James I’m glad you did a review on this game. I got to play this with some friends growing up and still proudly own.

This is one of my favorite games that is made by same makers of the original D&D ( TSR ) and so much easier to play if your looking for a lighter version of role playing.

The VHS tape that came with this game really got me excited to play this game and I like the Dragon Master actor because he does an amazing job with geting you to use your imagination. Its a shame you didn’t show the line where he says about your brain being the most powerful processor in the world. I just found it creative.

I still try to play this game with some friends from time to time and I recently spiced up the game by including D&D Miniatures from the D&D Miniature battle franchise that came out in mid 2000.

This game truly doesn’t get enough justice and truly is a fun game.
Thanks again for the review James .

I picked this up as a kid in the target clearance section for like 3 bucks. We used to just watch the video and make fun of it. The game is basically D&D for dummies

Actually, that “T” looks more like an “L” to me, but that could just be cuz i’m so used to reading Tengwar.

You should try playing the board game Nightmare. It has a video tape with the game but the guy in the film is an evil bastard and you’re actually playing the game against him.

So this is clearly a cheap mimic of Dungeons & Dragons, that takes itself way too seriously. I can’t tell you how discombobulated I am right now, and humored!

That “hero” was an American Gladiator named “Malibu”. At least on the original Live Tour. I, sadly, attended a show in NY. I later saw him on an episode of Married…With Children as a male stripper too. Quite the resume this guy’s got.

As others have posted, this game is basically Dungeons and Dragons “Lite” although at the time I first played this game as a kid I had no idea it would serve to send me down the page of RPG geekdom πŸ˜€ Unlike HeroQuest, which I played even earlier (and is essentially DragonStrike “Lite”), this game goes beyond just rolling dice to kill creatures…there is a pretty decent emphasis on role-playing and dialogue as well. It’s pretty much D&D with easier rules and the ability via figures and the boards to have some visuals along with the storytelling. It definitely was one of the more complex games I played growing up, but it was so much fun to play…I’ll have to dig this one up the next time I visit the parents. Highly recommend!
