probably one of my favorite videos. A classic video by the nerd.

@mchaza Not exactly old enough to be a classic yet funny vid anyway though.

Apparently, some versions of the game require a special button sequence as well as the dance combo in order to play Thriller. Others just don’t have it at all, and some just play Thriller without first checking if you performed the specific button presses beforehand.

    They are remaking this game;-)

  • May 2, 2010 at 3:35 pm

I just saw Michael Jackson’s This Is It on Blu-Ray and it was a delight to watch. It’s sad he’s gone before we might ever get to see those concerts, but his musical legacy will last forever!

Long live the King of Pop!

I Just got this game and i am a big fan of michael and my copy of the game as another part of me instead of thriller that’s the only thing that’s fucked up about the game, it’s still a great game and it was one of the most famous games in the mega drive library i hope they remake this game because there are many fans of MJ around the world and it would be awsome to see michael on a home console once again

    R.I.P – Michael Jackson

Anyone else think its ironic that he made this video the year of Michael’s death.

    May 16, 2010 at 3:18 pm

i got sonic’s ultimate genisis colection and i was disapointed this game was not included. lol

  • Jericho

    June 17, 2010 at 12:37 am

I own a copy w.o Thriller… but I found an online digi-redistrib with it! And if they do remake this, I would buy it in an instant. You would have people buyin’ this who don’t even like video games! And if it’s system exclusive (to the Wii or Kinect) it will force some die-hard fans to buy said system. I know I would.

  • June 20, 2010 at 8:01 pm

can anyone explain, whe he turned into a cat?? ))))
James, why did you turned into a cat? maybe i’m too stupid to get this joke 😀 %)

At the end of the the black and white video, Mj turns into a panther after destroting a butload of cars.
Great vid James. I loved MJ as a kid, my mom was a huge fan. Still is.
Anyways we had a genisis and I played the hell out of this game. Never made it passed the grave yard but we had the one that played thriller. freakin aweomse back then. still frustrateing today

my cat looks like that 🙂

  • Roe

    July 18, 2010 at 2:37 am

    @ WoAyumi

I doubt you’ll see this but what the hell..

In the video “Black or White” MJ dances the crap out of a car, bust’s up a few windows, destroys a hotel sign with his voice while playing in a puddle and tearing off his shirt…and turns into a Panther.

….Yeah, i don’t know what MJ was on either..and i had to watch it again just to make sure i was correct on it so you’re welcome 🙂

    this game was a CATastrophy

  • October 20, 2010 at 12:58 pm

I own this game and also the Sega Master System version of it and the PC Moonwalker, that’s a totally different game and also freezes, so it’s a pain in the ass.
The SMS version is graphically and soundly inferior of course, but seem to have fixed some flaws, like the Bubbles thing: after saving the last kid it SHOWS the Mr. Big laughing in a black screen and then it directly brings you to the endurance match.
Also the stages in the same zone look the same, maybe because of the system limitations, but this way it is less cryptic.
Then in the SMS version you have to unlock the hat trow and you can use the dance move only once per stage, but doesn’t drain your energy. I never found the shooting star in that version, so I think there isn’t.
Another difference is the finishing stage: in the Genesis version you turn to Mecha Jackson automatically for the endurance match, and then there’s a first person space flight simulator; in the SMS version you get the regular endurance match and then two Space Invaders style shooters, the first where you are the robot and have to destroy a lots of soldiers, the second where you are the spaceship and have to destroy Mr. Big’s cannons on the side of a mountain.
Those ending stages are very very hard, in fact I never beaten the Genesis one (or maybe I did on the emulator, I don’t remember, but that doesn’t count anyway); but in the SMS version you have unlimited continues, so in the end I beated it, but it took me so long that the music is still pierced in my brain after almost ten years and now I’m afraid it will remain like this forever…

    October 25, 2010 at 11:05 am

I’ve seen the movie Moonwalker after my sister got the VHS, and she had to watch it over and over and over again until the tape wore out. My favorite parts of the Smooth Criminal segment when I first saw it are the “Transformers” moments.

4:37- Man, I just love your expression here. Classic Nerd moment; this includes the ending.

  • December 20, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Where did that cat come from? He’s cute.

  • Gman123

    January 11, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Michael Jackson probably saw this, was so shocked that you called his game bad and just dropped dead LOL. Great vid. AVGN FOR LIFE.

Thats not ironic. I suppose it’s also ironic that Bible Adventures was made after Jesus’ death.

  • DualWolfBlade

    May 5, 2011 at 3:57 am

The ending of this video was just a unique way of saying that he has a cat.
Also I have to say, Mecha Jackson has got to be the most awesome transformation of any video game, movie, or anything.

    • Staarscommando

      February 8, 2012 at 8:00 pm

umm no it was a parody of a michael jackson music video where he turns into a panther.

u dont have to spin to move the man holes. u can moon walk it to the side lol

  • Ozymandias677

    June 8, 2011 at 10:50 pm

Okay, so I’ve watched your show up to this point, and I have to say that I agree with almost all of your reviews. This one is the only exception. I mean, sure there are some special offensive moves that consume an enormous amount of energy, and the game is redundant, but so is the Ratchet & Clank series (all they do is kill entire legions of enemies). Also, those basic moves-the fairy punch and kick-aren’t any different from Rayman’s special moves.

I don’t want to demoralize you, but there are many half decent to great games on the market that have these exact issues: redundant objectives and equally redundant means of completing them. Although, in the case of Ratchet & Clank, they give you an arsenal that can put a permanent fire inside a million asses.

  • Ozymandias677

    June 8, 2011 at 10:54 pm

P.S. Since I mentioned them, how about you do yourself a favor and play these two games:

    (a) Rayman, on the PSX; and

    (b) Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal

The latter is what I believe to be the worst fucking action game, because the ultimate Easter Egg-the Insomniac Museum-is a total letdown.

Shadow….go fuck yourself you MJ hating peice of fucking ass shit bitch.

Why would they make a game about an overrated artist who’s also a pedophile?

  • Dragon_Nexus

    August 30, 2011 at 9:44 am

Love James’ cat. So pretty 83

  • KeithEllwood

    September 15, 2011 at 4:58 pm

The point of Bubbles is so he shows you where the boss screen is. You wouldn’t wanna fight the endurance rounds without the piano. That would suck, you need those spots to jump on

  • csenger41

    October 12, 2011 at 4:38 pm

Where from can I download those versions of Michael Jackson songs?

  • TehKnight

    October 25, 2011 at 8:12 pm

You could download a ROM of this game and play the songs on an emulator, record it with Stereo Mix in Audacity, and export it as an MP3. That’s what I would do, but I’m not sure if the game has a sound test in the options menu

  • November 2, 2011 at 8:48 pm

I actually like this game a lot and I’m a big MJ fan so that helps. There isn’t much to the game like the video says and its far from perfect but its fun and that’s all the matters.

I love his reaction at the end to all the zombies. Especially when the one comes apart and attacks him.

  • TheMaineShow

    September 23, 2012 at 1:56 am

The ending was a homage to the controversial bit in Black or white where michael smashes cars, rips his shirt and transforms into a panther.

  • February 17, 2013 at 4:13 pm

In regards to Thriller not being in the game: is it possible they never got the rights to it? Sounds stupid, but that might be the answer! Maybe it’ll be in the remake.

  • November 19, 2014 at 2:02 pm

the arcade version was sick though

  • gluserty

    April 27, 2015 at 4:14 am

I swear, it looks to me like SEGA used similar gameplay mechanics in the 1987 arcade version of “Shinobi” (maybe it’s the rescuing kid deal and the overall level layouts).

James’ favorites
