AVGN: Ghostbusters

Mike Matei / February 27th, 2007

Episode notes by Mike Matei:
– For episode 21 AVGN reviews Ghostbusters on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
– James and I talked about this game for hours and hours on end. In particular, the speaking part on the title screen that says “GHOSTBUSTERS!” in a muffled voice. We sat around mocking that voice for hours.
– I did the drawing of the kids rocketing through the roof at James request.

Episode Quotes:
The little ghosts with their tongues sticking out look like kindergarten Halloween decorations, and neither Gozer nor the dogs move. Hey, I can even name the dogs. That’s Vinz Clortho and Zuul. Zuul apparently bought the building that they’re standing on. Now, you know what’s really shocking about this part? You’re moving around, dodging projectiles and shooting at things? Kinda like… A game. Surprising, right? I mean this is the closest moment that this piece of shit ever comes to possibly being decent.

Sorry for the double commenting; but I seem to remember this game from back when I had the Sega Master System. It didn’t click right away because I never could get any further than the building part. I just kept floating around like an astrobastard, and not figuring anything out. I had the instruction book, but was too half assed to look at it.
Anyways, was this also a SMS game? Is that possible?

I haven’t grown up much with Ghostbusters, but thankfully I did over time, and have both movies on DVD.

Dear lord in Heaven, this game is just uninspired, and I mean that in a bad way. It’s just afful.

There is a glitch on the stairs that gives you 256 hits. When you’re on your last knockdown, of which you get three, You have to open a door containing a ghost. When the ghost hits you instead of dying you get 255 more hits. If you open any doors after that and hear the powerup sound that means you just received an extra life which will reset your lives back to one. So once the glitch is activated refrain from opening anymore doors and good luck!

I have a quick question, just one question. WHY IS DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE IN YOUR NES TOPLOADER!? I’m serious, look under the tv, its the n64 with super smash bros. then the snes with, something. Then its the toploader with, that abomination of mankind!

    • senna4ever

      December 4, 2011 at 11:52 am

Cos it’s obviously a stock shot.

If you look at the screen you’ll notice the gameplay footage of GB is put on in post.

ghostbuster movie was good but the game does suck yep

  • August 25, 2011 at 4:59 pm

Why didn’t you show the C64 version for longer?
It is the same shitty game, but the digitized speech is waaaay better
(it says “Ghostbusters” instead of “xghaawwzzhuzzxerx” and even uses other quotes from the movie), you don’t have to do the stairwell stage and they even spelled “Congratulations” right (and didn’t claim it to be a “great game”)
Ah and the music is a chiptune of the extended version of the song including all the intermezzos and soli and takes about 5 minutes until it loops!
I think the NES version is by far the worst version of one of the worst video games in existence (the Genesis version does not count).

I have a theroy for the map screen….thinggy. Its a tracking computer. The logo represents the tracking thinggy, & u select the building, then you drive to it. Your not actually moving around the map screen, your searching for ghosts.

  • March 17, 2012 at 9:47 am

aybody else notice that ghostbusters isnt in the toploader at 3:57. It’s Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde

    • LukasSprehn

      March 17, 2012 at 1:41 pm

That is because he has several NES systems. The one he’s playing on is not that one… I think.

I loved the movie too and thought a game would be awesome, unfortunately this one wasn’t. The one for the genesis was rather fun though.

Hi James, I’m a new fan and just started to get over your 107 videos and I’m feel happy discovered your work but in this f*****g Chostbuster, aren’t we supposed to be three of us in tihs damn stairs ??? What happened to one of us in the final boss stage ???
    This Game Sucks . . .

  • Grits McGriff

    September 14, 2012 at 9:09 pm

Part of the reason this game sucks is that it was made for computers in the dystopian year of 1984. I had it on an 8 inch floppy and that’s what the game gave me.

    Harold “Egon” Ramis died today.

Not only a Ghostbuster, but also one of the best comedy writer and directors ever.
I guess James will never see that Ghosbusters film of them just taking a shit now…

  • May 20, 2014 at 2:58 am

I just read on wikipedia that Ernie Hudson is quoted as saying: ‘My kids really hated the(actually the commodore64 version)game. They thought it sucked.’. That should’ve been on the box lol. “This game sucks. We hate it’ -Ernie Hudson’s kids.

Recently watched through the whole C64 Youtube video “Commodore C64 – 1982” (https://youtu.be/xmnlkLc1Foc?t=7333) And in it there is a clip at the end from the developer of the C64 Ghostbuster game explaining how the game was already in production and the Ghostbuster theme was tacked on later in the production just for sales really. Which explains why it has nothing to do with the Ghostbusters.
