AVGN: Top Gun

Mike Matei / September 24th, 2006

Episode notes by Mike Matei:
– In episode 10 the Nerd reviews Top Gun for NES
– Towards the end of this episode the Nerd also reviews Top Gun: The Second Mission. This was a game James borrowed from my NES collection. I remember laughing with him over how small the font is on the label spine. You need a microscope to read it.

Saw the beginning of the movie last night on AMC! Looked pretty good! The scene where Chopper tries to land the plane reminded me of this video!

    *Cougar sorry!

I’m kind of curious to play this game. The AVGN was miraculously able to land the plane using the Power Glove (yeah it’s so bad). Also Metal Gear Ben seemed to have no difficulty landing the plane. I’m wondering if this game is worthwhile afterall.

  • May 9, 2010 at 11:37 am

Yeah amazing how he managed to do it with the power glove, a great movie, too bad the game sucks..

it’s an amazing game! sincee i first time tried it, i falled in-love with flying simulators till nowdays!
i spent many hours to learn to land this shitty fuck, but i remember that i mastered it so well, that i could do it from first time every level. my brother laughed at me and said that i’m crazy, coz i’ve mastered this increddibly hard piece of shit =D
but i know – he was just ency =PPP

  • June 17, 2010 at 8:55 pm

i’ve just give it a try, after more than 10 years, to play this game again and i’ve made it to land this plane from first time! hahaha that’s so sick.

What do you think of the NEW TOP GUN GAME (DLC) ON THE PS3?!

Nice to know I’m not the only one who couldn’t land the plane. I hated this game when I was a kid. If some gross fat dude like Dennis Franz came to your house and took a dump on your kitchen floor, that would be equal to this game. A big pile of Dennis Franz’s diarrhea defecation.

I never saw the movie because I’m just not interested in movies like these.

Before and after I saw the re-revisited episode, I played the 1st level of this game online, and I still frackin’ crash. I think playing this game on the Power Glove is the only way to land the plane.

If I’m gonna play a flight simulator game, I’ll go with the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Trilogy.

I’m so disappointed you put up the new version (I guess it comes from the DVD) cleaned up from the old intro and the original themes.
I thought you could use them, at least on the website.
I figured out the old version is still on youtube, so I’m gonna download that one, and the other clips which came modified after the DVD edit.

You probably should make an even more re-revisited version in which your tv shoots first and then you hadooken-ize it… just kidding, I know it’s not your fault. 🙂

I think it’s funny how I just played the game for my first time ever (on an emulator, sure, but I didn’t save state or cheat in any way) and I landed the plane with almost no problems.

    A speeds up (also allowing you to change altitude faster) and B slows down… I’m almost guessing James and some other people didn’t know this o.o;

you idiot, when it say’s ‘UP’ it means ‘pitch the nose of the plane up’ by pressing DOWN on the controller, hitting UP just pushes you down, which is why you hit the water.

I remember getting this game. It was on my birthday, my parents wrapped it in a huge bag that looked like a cloths package. They fooled me good. I opened it and i ran to my room to pop it in. And i played it till i dropped.

Back then i didnt care though, it was top gun and it was cool as hell. Hehe looking back, i have to wonder what i was thinking.

I got AVGN syndrome, after he destroyed the t.v., I thought it was over(been a while since I’ve seen this one.) The nerd says, wait there’s another, and I made the Nerd frown face shaking my head. Then I had to take a swig of my beer.

I think silence and the sound of the jets is better than a shitty, 8-bit loop of Danger Zone. That’s what we would’ve had otherwise.

0:45Roflmao x 88888 I laughed so much when I learned from James himself that those ”random numbers” are actual hints to help you understand that the controls of the landing sequence are INVERTED-.-Basically, if you followed the instructions and you didn’t know the controls are inverted but you managed to land the plane, your retarded… but if you didn’t figure out the controls were inverted in the landing sequence ( like me and james ) even with the hints he calls ” random numbers “.. well you’re just dumb or drunk lol

I’m sure pat the nes punk made fun of him for that when they talked to each other caused he posted his revisit videos and corrected that after meeting him.. I didn’t check that out

pat the nes punks has a line that makes fun of that in the nes championship outakes that I think should’ve been in the video with a lot more corrections on some mistake from james 😛 without trolls to bitch about it those kind of mistakes are funny

Growing up I thought I was the only person who had trouble with this game. I played two levels and could never progress further, but I kept playing and play hoping I would progress but no I never did. All I got was anger, frustration, tears, body parts throbbing with pain, and neighbours who learned new swear words. Never again will I play this game ever ever again, and if I were to see it some where out there I will do what any game would do take a heaping pile of shit on it.

For your troubles, LIGHT taps of the A and B buttons are best for speed, and LIGHT taps of the D-pad are best as oppose to holding it down. BTW, the control is inverted in the landing sequence and refueling squence! UP IS DOWN AND DOWN IS UP!!!

I actually think this game is okay, and I like the instrumental played during the missle selection screen.

  • July 1, 2013 at 1:21 pm

I personally think it’s an okay game.

  • December 29, 2013 at 6:52 pm

These kinda videos make me wonder if any of these reviews are legit. Top Gun is easy as hell to figure out, and I’ve never had a problem with landing or re-fueling. For someone to have nearly gotten through Ninja Gaiden but complain so much about Top Gun….It makes me doubt.

The Angry Video Game Nerd is not a real person, he is a character. AVGN is not just a game review series, it’s a comedy series based on reviewing games. While James and the AVGN may share opinions, the AVGN’s opinions tend to be more picky and explosive than the real James’ for comedic effect.

That being said, unless you know to just say “fuck the instructions” and just pay attention to the Altitude and Speed counters, it is confusing. And he said as much in Back to the Future Re-Revisited, where he beat it I believe, or at least got close.

Kenny Loggins was the go to guy for movie soundtracks back in those days. I still love those songs. Hey, a movie based NES game that wasn’t published by LJN. Nice!!!

    • awesome video games

      April 5, 2015 at 7:48 am

highway to the danger zone is used by kenny loggins here but james should have also used the song mighty wings from the film and coined a line of his own with something like mighty dogshit or mighty ass

  • February 23, 2016 at 1:52 pm

I played this at a friends house and then got to choose between it and captain skyhawk because my parents would only buy one. I chose captain skyhawk and my friend always wanted to swap games for the weekend. It was rare that I did!
