Someone needs to create a new curse for those games!!! oooh I loved it!!! good job, really!

”THIS GAME IS JEKYLLHYDEOUS!!! WORSE THEN Dr JEKYLL AND Mr HYDE!!!!”

  8. You Can Just Walk Over It September 4, 2009 @ 11:45 pm

The Nintendo Power tease, looking up TV guide lists for Godzilla movies, and the Monster Madness from last year make this episode one of the best, since it’s not sane to say the complaints were greatly exaggerated. The irony with the xbox and ps2 games perfectly show how any fan of Godzilla in the 80s were born too early.

Also glad Destoroyah got mentioned before the video ended!

  9. matthewlee September 4, 2009 @ 11:47 pm

    Great!!! %&*@^

  10. ZicoCirola September 4, 2009 @ 11:49 pm

  11. horrorfanboy September 4, 2009 @ 11:54 pm

Cool, James. I can tell you’re a big Godzilla fan. When’s the new Spike movie review coming?

  12. the_darkness69 September 4, 2009 @ 11:56 pm

yea i remeber playing that game boy godzilla game when i was 11 i played it for 20 min and took that picec of shit back to the store but umm yea while i didnt think this ep was all that funny it did bring back memories and for that i thank you james ^_^

  13. Cless Aileron September 5, 2009 @ 12:00 am

Loved it! It was worth the pain of seeing it late.

Man, that part where the Nerd almost took out Mecha-Godzilla, only for the game to cut off that gameplay reminds me of fighting against someone in a fighting game online. Just when I think I’m about to win against someone’s Zangief as Guile playing Street Fighter IV online, they disconnect (and I had pretty good health to boot)! Somehow, that computer is worse than those SFIV players disconnecting from an online match they can’t lose with honor.

Loved the bit about you playing a Super Famicom Godzilla game and Xbox/PS2 games, only to feel like crap that they weren’t around for your childhood and would have loved it. Enough for you to swear like hell. You even managed to get the “Destoroyah” pronunciation/call you did in your Godzillathon thrown in. New swear word? Somehow, we got Nerd 2009 Moment material here from that last scene!

  14. Dias4Flac September 5, 2009 @ 12:00 am

Great Episode. I remember playing that PS2 version of Godzilla. My best friend and I used to play that like every day.

  15. Hendrix1564 September 5, 2009 @ 12:00 am

    Great episode.

  16. Lucgodzillafan September 5, 2009 @ 12:02 am

He forgot to review that Godzilla game that was on the Dreamcast.

  17. jsin1276 September 5, 2009 @ 12:10 am

Great review and was pretty nice to see you review a game on Last Gen systems. I thought I would see you mention King of the Monsters as that was my substitute for a Godzilla game. Being a monster fighting another monster while in a city. What great memories.

  18. jsin1276 September 5, 2009 @ 12:11 am

Forgot to mention that I’m glad the Mega Man 9 poster didn’t get damaged during that Bugs Bunny fight.

  19. kasper798 September 5, 2009 @ 12:14 am

    JUST AWESOME!!!!!!

  20. AdamGlenn September 5, 2009 @ 12:15 am

Ya I had that fucking game too, what shit fuck. I think this is one of the best avgn videos yet! I love Godzilla and I’ve been waiting for you to make this one.
Now destroy that fucking JAWs game for NES !!!!

  21. Butto22 September 5, 2009 @ 12:16 am

Yes!!! I’m Dylan, the one who sent you Godzilla for GB a while back. Thank you so much for including my sick joke of a game in your review! You accurately described its assness! What’s funny is that I have very fond memories of playing Bubble Bobble with my siblings years back. Your review of that game was so funny, just like all of the other Godzilla games you reviewed….thanks again for making it worth the wait!

  22. Jigglysaint September 5, 2009 @ 12:21 am

Let me tell you why this particular AVGN was one of the best I’ve ever watched.

First of all, the Nerd reviewed a game(Godzilla for the NES0, which I played when I was a kid. I have to confess that Godzilla wasn’t there for me in my formitive years, but later on I would appreciate it’s awesome. Having a game I knew be reviewed made it feel just a bit more special. It was like when James did Superman for the NES(and yes I will defend how much I actually enjoyed that one). I will admit that I liked the music in Godzilla, but not enough to rip music from it.

Second of all, what made this one of the best AVGN’s I’ve seen, is that this was what the franchise was founded on. Simply put, it’s a show about a character who was disillusioned as a child, and ends up spending the rest of his days being unable to get over such feelings as an adult. Since this review was based on somthing that was so near and dear to James’ heart, that meant that I could feel the genuine anger.

  23. KaiserMaster September 5, 2009 @ 12:22 am

Actually they were 2 Godzilla games for the dreamcast: Godzilla Generation and Godzilla Generation Maximum Impact, plus he forgot to review that one that is a Godzilla trading card game for the PS2 i think ( but only for Japan). There was another Godzilla game that was a side scroller for the GB but not really sure.

hey AVGN, first of all great review, I always visit your site and check if you had any new videos loved the Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle review (MY GOD so many sequels except 4). Second of all, there was a Godzilla game that came to the USA in 1994 for the Turbo Duo I believe, it was called Godzilla Battle Legends from Japan but the title was changed only to Godzilla in the USA from the same people that made Godzilla Destroy All Monster for the SNEZ I think. I assume you don’t have the game so it will not surprise me you will revisit this Godzilla video review again. btw you should have gotten the Godzilla Unleashed for the NWii, that one although weird control scheme is better than the PS2 version which is just a recycle plus a better monster list lol. but anyway great review.

  24. Jigglysaint September 5, 2009 @ 12:23 am

My jaw also dropped when the Nerd actually went and played the newer Godzilla games, and felt so terribly shafted in the process. Also cool to see the Super Famicom. I know somewhere that actually sells a few of them.

  25. electro ice September 5, 2009 @ 12:27 am

the xbox and ps2 godzilla games are the shit… their awesome!
i wonder what’s the new swear?

keep up the good work james!
    awesome review XD

  26. algi2 September 5, 2009 @ 12:28 am

What did you say as placeholder for the curseword?

  27. DanInTheBox September 5, 2009 @ 12:32 am

Anyone else notice that Godzilla 2 is Advance Wars. Similar animated battles with the EXACT game board view and icons. Anybody know anything about this?

  28. wolfemanxd September 5, 2009 @ 12:33 am

Another classic. I remember buying godzilla for game boy when I was younger, and I was so upset with it. I got a word you can insert where the sensor was. “Megaass cannon”.

ass cannon (ass can•non) a. 1. Slang for diarrhea.

  29. Sai September 5, 2009 @ 12:42 am

The ending had me laughing so hard. I loved your reactions and how the Nerd didn’t know how to use the PS2/Xbox controllers.

:p Of course I half hoped the Nerd would have some sort of epiphany and maybe branch out a bit more, at least 5th gen!

  30. Hallwings September 5, 2009 @ 12:47 am

Where do you get these Japanese systems? First, it was the Famicom in “Transformers,” now it’s the Super Famicom in “Gojira.”

BTW, did you find your cord for the Famicom Disk System yet?

  31. ithica3782 September 5, 2009 @ 12:50 am

hahahah oh man i was cracking up SO hard at the end, super vid man great job, i just registered never had before so i gotta say im a huge fan i love all your vids your amazing, this one did not disappoint, possible best ending ever. board james new one was great too!

  32. Hizzout September 5, 2009 @ 12:53 am

Awesome as always James. Very funny. My favorite part is when you’re fumbling with the Xbox and PS controllers. Sums up my gaming life perfectly. 2 years ago I built my own arcade stand up machine, complete with MAME, NES, Genesis, SNES, TG-16, and Atari 2600 games and I’ve barely ever looked at current games since. I’m a retro gamer at heart, and every time I attempt to play on any modern system I’m just lost. What’s wrong with 4 buttons max? Flashy graphics and beefy processing is no match for catchy gameplay and original ideas. Thanks again for the memories.

  33. Sluice September 5, 2009 @ 1:09 am

Thank you endlessly for including DESUTROYAH in there. I can turn 23 in a state of grace. :]

  34. S_Pac_316 September 5, 2009 @ 1:12 am

Well sorry James, but I liked the NES game.
It did have it’s flaws though but I still enjoyed it overall. I loved the soundtrack. The sequel wasn’t all that great though, so yeah…
The Game Boy Godzilla game mad me laugh! I never played it, but glad I didn’t!

I have played Destroy all monsters Melee and thought it was decent. That’s the extent of the Godzilla games I’ve played.

  35. Hizzout September 5, 2009 @ 1:12 am

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I sent you a pic a couple of weeks back of me enjoying the AVGN KO Boxing on my home built cab. It’s a great addition to the rest of the games I’ve got on it. Keep up the good work!

  36. MrWh00pee September 5, 2009 @ 1:21 am

    Awesome, great episode!

  37. toiletfarm September 5, 2009 @ 1:22 am

What is it with Nintendo and not giving an actual date on any of their games? Are their copyright laws for individual years? It’s strange that anything of popularity back in those days, when made into a video game, usually “turned up the diarrhea dial” quite a bit. I feel your pain about waiting for games that never got released. I would have loved a Mega Man collection for the GBA in color.

  38. Jacob Kaiju September 5, 2009 @ 1:28 am

I remember playing both the NES games and The Super Godzilla one. Yeah, we American kids really got the shitty games while the Japanese children got the cool ones.

Hell, there was Godzilla games for the Turbo Duo (a fighting game like the one on the Super Famicom), Game Gear, The Dreamcast games, a Trading Card battle game. Hell, there were even Gamera games.

I have heard the Wii version for Godzilla Unleashed is better the Ps2 though. The DS had one and so did the Gameboy Advance, but they both suck.

  39. Schoellnacher September 5, 2009 @ 1:29 am

Classic ending with that totally awesome rant like you did in the TMNT-Review. Exactly the thing I was waiting for all the time. Even played X-Box and PS2-Games. I’m satisfied, though the beginning was a bit monotonous with the first game played maybe a bit too long, but hey, I’m just a very picky critic, but all in all you did a great job again. Thumbs up.

  40. Mariwa September 5, 2009 @ 1:47 am

    Awesome as always James.
    Youre the man.
The ending was Epic, and that godzilla 2 for the NES sucked monkey balls.

  41. electricmastro September 5, 2009 @ 1:51 am

Poll: What’s your favorite Godzilla movie and/or Gozilla video game of all time?

  42. Asterra September 5, 2009 @ 2:13 am

This episode made my top 5, and I’ve watched ‘em all a number of times, most recently on NicoVideo where Japanese fans’ comments are displayed in “realtime”. They fan-subtitled (almost) all of your AVGNs _and_ much of your other Cinemassacre output, including the whole Godzillathon run. They are going to eat this episode up.

I agree with an earlier comment. This episode wins because it feels sincere, and is chock full of information that only a true fan, nostalgia buff, or (yes) a nerd would be capable of so casually dispensing. It also gives each game a fair shake, which is always preferable to a short dismissal.

And my favorite moment: The way the beer almost seemed to levitate itself to a drinkable position while you were still preoccupied with stupefaction over the GBA game. Everyone, give that scene another peek. It’s great psychological humor. Well done.

  43. StandingCow September 5, 2009 @ 2:17 am

I have been trying to leave comments for months now, but just now wordpress seems to be working! Woohoo!

Anyway James, being the same age as you (or close at 29) I feel your pain, this is a game I played the hell out of as a kid, younger kids don’t know the pain we went through… spend 50 bucks for a game that turns out to be a piece of shit!

The wizard of oz review used to be my fav.. now I think it might be this episode.

  44. xtimrs September 5, 2009 @ 2:44 am

Ya know James, I feel your pain.

Didn’t you, at some point in your childhood, play Rampage with a friend and pretend it was Godzilla and King Kong? Really, that was the closest us NES kids ever got to a Godzilla experience. I really loved Rampage. You’re right though, a game where you’re fighting monsters, the licensed ones, would have been ideal.

Destroy All Monsters Melee was amazing though. I didn’t play the other two, but I loved Godzilla DAMM. I was so jacked when it came out, because I had never once played a good Godzilla game.

I love Godzilla and I really loved the Godzilla-thon. This made me want to go back and watch it all over again. I was having such fun when you did the Godzilla-thon, watching the movies then watching your reviews.

    Keep up the great work!

  45. Rej September 5, 2009 @ 2:44 am

Fucking mint video. “FUCCCK”, knocking over SNES games, I lmao’d. REviewing a Super Famicom game was pretty neat twist imo, I hope to see more. You could easily fill an entire series about SNES/SFC games that got fucked out of a US release. I am in college and I pretty much stopped giving a shit about current gen games about 3 years ago(mostly due to money lol), so your disinterest is shared. nice megaman 9 poster btw.

  46. smokey-jaye123 September 5, 2009 @ 2:47 am

man that shits fucken funny haha defently worth the wait

  47. Mr. Dogma September 5, 2009 @ 2:52 am

Oh my god. That was AMAZING. I’ve been waiting for a review of the old Godzilla games and actually expected it last year during your Godzillathon, but hey, I nearly shit my pants when I saw you got around to these. That said, I’ve got my own comments to add for the retro games.

The original Godzilla on the NES, I more or less liked the monster fighting. But Mothra is a piece of fuck when it comes to fighting other monsters, but is awesome at just bypassing entire levels and trying to move on. Godzilla just gets shit wrecked by everything because he has to go through all the stupid rocks. I’m also VERY surprised you didn’t mention the corner rape. Nothing sucks more than thinking you’re gonna beat a monster only to have it push you into a corner and then just sit there, slowly draining your life.

Godzilla 2 was a piece of shit. I’ve got nothing else to add.

Never played the Godzilla on Gameboy, but that looked awful. They butchered everything.

Super Godzilla I actually like. It’s not exactly fantastic, and the fighting system still confuses me, but I’ve beaten the game multiple times and enjoyed it. That’s probably because I liked it more than the other games of the time. Did you just give up or something? I was half-expecting a mention of the transformed Super Godzilla (which looks like Space Godzilla) and the unmade monster Bagan. That was one crazy ass battle. I eventually learned to be effective in the monster battle, you move forward, then as the enemy monster’s spirit rises, you pull back, and just kinda dance around until it gets low enough you run in for a punch. Then just pull back as far as you can and just blast those fuckers with Godzilla’s atomic breath. The Mechagodzilla battle I found one of the most entertaining, which oddly enough is the second boss.

  48. Thantos September 5, 2009 @ 2:55 am

James bringed such a good point about being born too early, i actually thought that aswell plenty of times, and because of that my childhood ended up with lots of horrible games wich i purely wasted my time with, nowdays kids wouldnt have that issue. Well sorta

  49. Keeto787 September 5, 2009 @ 3:03 am

That was an awesome episode. Very entertaining, that 15 minutes goes by so freakin fast haha. Im gonna to watch it again =D

  50. Butterbelly September 5, 2009 @ 3:12 am

James! You are the best! But please review Yoshi’s adventure on N64.. Ass!

  51. pikmintaro September 5, 2009 @ 3:23 am

Wow! I loved the review James! I have been a huge Godzilla fan since I was 2 so I was waiting a bit for this review but it was worth it :)

I think instead of the PS2 version of Godzilla Unleashed though you should have gotten the Wii version since it has almost twice as many Monsters while the PS2 version seems to just be Godzilla Save The Earth1.2
Although you probably already have it rofl.

Man I remember my Mom buying me the GB Godzilla game in the story and I was soooooooooooooooooo disappointed with it great to see it get the treatment it deserves.

  52. ChrisAnimeGuy September 5, 2009 @ 3:28 am

    Wow..just wow

That was AWESOME James!!! I loved every single second of it. Like during last year’s Godzillathon I always loved Godzilla but since I was born in 1986 I was a late 80’s/mostly 90’s kid and there was even less stuff to find concerning Godzilla back then than today. Thats probably because I’m in the UK and we get it even worse with things like Godzilla. The only decent thing about Godzilla we’ve had in recent years is a restored version of the first movie (1954 movie not the US craptastic one) and it has pride and place in my dvd collection^^ Still gotta get the rest but I’m working on it.

As for the Godzilla games, I know about most of the ones you played but have only played Destroy All Monsters Melee which I have for the Gamecube. Its pretty coolz if alittle awkward with the controls at times and the CPU can be alittle cheap but still a great game nonetheless for Godzilla fans like us ^^

Keep up the great work and hope to see more soon!

  53. Deefmaster September 5, 2009 @ 3:34 am

The yell mixed with the godzilla screeching and knocking over the snes games is comedy gold. Hilarious.

  54. Naruedyoh September 5, 2009 @ 3:35 am

    Simply amazing

  55. 5h32m4n September 5, 2009 @ 3:54 am

Fantastic episode. Can’t wait to buy the new DVD when it comes out, by the way.

  56. matthewlee September 5, 2009 @ 3:55 am

This is great stuff, keep it going AVGN!!!

  58. Jacob Kaiju September 5, 2009 @ 4:49 am

Hey Mr. Dogma, The reason that Space Godzilla and Super Godzilla look alike is cause the former is based on the later. Actually, the original movie idea that originally had Bagan (well, the one we see in the game) had Godzilla turning into Super Godzilla. It was also suppose to have the Atragon/Gotengo.

  59. spoilage September 5, 2009 @ 4:54 am

Damn right the 1998 movie doesn’t count, “Zilla” is not good enough, it should be re-named “We thought it was Godzilla”, if anyone has not seen the “godzillathon” yet, it’s a must see.

idk about avgn being late, still around 14 days, did anyone see how many videos GT put up just before avgn? i though it was a lot, not that i care as long as James is getting good support, plus we got new “Board James” Awesome! like who else does that! (i’m with the catch phase people, it’s good) The next DVD is going too be action packed!

  60. marclawson September 5, 2009 @ 4:56 am

great job. i love seeing the nerd lash out in rage!

please don’t ever lose touch with the bitter fury in this character.

  61. Jehauri September 5, 2009 @ 5:16 am

Great one, James. I cannot BELIEVE you were able to keep a straight face during that final rant!

  62. mfgreth September 5, 2009 @ 5:20 am

awww James, you forgot the Godzilla Turbografx 16 game. It’s actually pretty good!

Also, you don’t need an SFC to play SFC games… you can play them on a SNES bro, you just have to remove the plastic tabs inside (it’s not hard, took me like five seconds). Then again, I suppose if you have an SFC, might as well use it huh.

  63. takaplus September 5, 2009 @ 5:27 am

    Dear James Rolfe,

this was one the best AVGN episodes ever!
    really!
the part with the ps2/xbox controller is so funny!
wow, i just said fuck from the bottom of my heart…

  64. AnKun September 5, 2009 @ 5:28 am

Well that thing with japanese games being unavailable outside is a common problem for us fans of good japanese games.

And nearly half of japanese games are conissted of thoose “chess strategy games”, and yeah, I hate them too.

  65. Vestner September 5, 2009 @ 5:33 am

Really epic. I love these old style, down in the basement, classic AVGN’s. I love how you change it up from time to time, but these ones are great. You deserve the best James, for entertaining us all.

  66. rashktah September 5, 2009 @ 5:51 am

Wow, great episode! Brilliant usage of these PS2 and XBox games!!!

  67. Lope de Aguirre September 5, 2009 @ 6:07 am

The new Godzilla’s didn’t look so crisp either.
I personally missed the two crappy Dreamcast zilla’s.

  68. Doctor Cheesius September 5, 2009 @ 6:08 am

This is one of the best AVGN episodes in a long time, I think. That doesn’t mean I’ve been disappointed by the recent ones, far from it – but this one is really well done, really pays tribute to the Godzilla franchise. Thank you for providing entertainment.

The gameboy game made me laugh so hard when you started playing it.

  69. inzyster September 5, 2009 @ 6:10 am

    A nerdy masterpiece.

  70. syntheticsw September 5, 2009 @ 6:21 am

I was never really into the Godzilla stuff, but this
video brought an interesting aspect :

Even today there are some games, that are better
    than the old ones.

  71. Sebastian September 5, 2009 @ 6:40 am

At least we had King of the monsters for SNES, which wasn’t a Godzilla game, but a good monster fighting game.

Godzilla for Dreamcast was a huge hype (and it sucked in the end), I wonder that it wasn’t mentioned.

  72. SKITTY8NOPITTY September 5, 2009 @ 7:03 am

DAM I FUCKING LOVE THIS REVIEW NERD SHIT REALLY FUNNY.I USE TO LOVE GROWING UP WATCHING GODZILLA AS A KID 2.EVERYBODY THOUGHT I WAS A NERD (NOT THE GODZILLA IN 1998 LOL) BUT I I LOVE WATCHING THE JAPANESE ONES.OF COURSE I SAW YOUR HALLOWEEN TRIBUTE TO GODZILLA LAST YEAR CANT WAIT TO SEE WHAT YOU GONNA REVIEW THIS HALLOWEEN AND AGAIN NICE REVIEW.IT REALLY MADE ME LAUGH.BEST PART WAS THE ENDING :) GOMO GOMO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PISTOL!!!!!!!!!!!

  73. Jel-K September 5, 2009 @ 7:20 am

excellent; the gameboy version made me laugh loud !

  74. StuntXL September 5, 2009 @ 7:24 am

I just registered just so that I can say this… James, you’re AVGN is finally back on form!!

I’ve been following your AVGN vids for some time, and it seems apparent recently for a long time you’ve been lacking the enthusiasm and spark to play the character.

This one’s finally back to your earlier standards!

  75. ayame September 5, 2009 @ 7:45 am

OMG, this has got to be one of the best AVGN episodes ever! Really, and I’m not even into Godzilla! I especially liked the ending, the confrontation between the nerd and the new gaming generation – It was great really, I always wondered myself what would it be like to show a recent game to someone who played 2D games in the eighties – And then the nerd swearing from the bottom of his heart. Another thing that’s curious is that the battle system on the SuperNintendo version of Godzilla has a similar strategy to the new Final Fantasy Dissidia fighting game, where you first need to steal the opponent’s bravery and then attack with everything you’ve got.

Well, now a little off-topic – James, have you ever considered reviewing The Neverhood Chronicles? It’s an epic, epic adventure game for the PC from the 90’s…The only thing is that the nerd wouldn’t probably review it since it’s not sh*tty. It’s such a great and funny game.

  76. Liquishbutter September 5, 2009 @ 8:04 am

    Yeah!!!
This is one of the best AVGN videos ever, the “Fuck it” made me jizz my pants, and the end music and ending itself is just pure awesome.
    It was worth the wait.

  77. RegalX7 September 5, 2009 @ 8:08 am

I don’t really know what to say, because everyone else has already said it, but whatever; this was a great, great, great episode!

  78. Wesley26508 September 5, 2009 @ 9:00 am

Fucking great man! You bring back the child frustration from long ago. Something tells me you and I would have been best freinds growing up as kids.
Godzilla rules! but the old time Godzilla games suck!!!!

  79. Sigurd September 5, 2009 @ 9:09 am

I loved it. Best one in some time I think! Thanks man, I needed it.

    WOOT NEW NERD!

  81. Darkenmal September 5, 2009 @ 9:39 am

Best one this year by fucking far. Welcome back James. We missed you.

  82. Optics September 5, 2009 @ 9:54 am

This was a GREAT review. The best in a long long time. The jokes were there, the length was there, the review was there – everything was perfect.

Godzilla 2 by far looks like the worst of the games. Damn the Japaneese and them getting first dibs on all of the good games, huh? :)

By the way, was the part where you said cunt unintentional? It looked like you hesitated for a moment not sure if you should cut it and get another take. Either I’m wrong or I guess you left it in becuase it was funny enough? Either way I liked it I just love this trivia type stuff, always fun to know.

I also love how you censored your self with the color bars to go along with the tone. LOL!

  83. Ithilgore September 5, 2009 @ 10:11 am

Anoher great episode. I do love Godzilla quite dearly, and I really enjoyed Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee on the Gamecube, it was what a Godzilla game should be, like you said, giant monsters trashing cities while beating the crap out of each other.

  84. Bendead September 5, 2009 @ 10:15 am

there was a game called King of the monsters on megadrive you should try : it’s kind of what’s you’re looking for, I think

  85. NHY September 5, 2009 @ 10:53 am

I was up half the night last night waiting for the new episode to come up before giving up and going to bed.

But needless to say, this episode was definitely worth the wait! Its definitely the best episode of AVGN you done this year so far and is on par with the classics, anyone who thought you’ve lost your touch have being proven wrong with this gem.

Then again, the fact you are a Godzilla fan probably helped as well.

    Well done, James.

  86. Zangeki September 5, 2009 @ 11:04 am

I think the word you were looking for was Meecrob. Yeah that’s right, those game Meecrob.

  87. MorePAIN September 5, 2009 @ 11:20 am

WHAT WAS THE LAST WORD HE SAID? I WANNA KNOW TELL US JAMES!!!!! Probably was MEECROB LOL

  88. awilliams1701 September 5, 2009 @ 11:24 am

Nice acting in the end. I actually believed for a second that the nerd never heard/played xbox or ps2 (which anymore are older systems)

  89. Dadaph September 5, 2009 @ 11:59 am

    Nice one.

Just noticed how they recycled some graphics from the SNES-version of Sim City in the opening cutscene of Super Godzilla…..were they allowed to do that?

  90. german dude September 5, 2009 @ 12:26 pm

This was really a great episode, James! Thanks for all your work! Greetings from germany!

  91. link123175 September 5, 2009 @ 12:43 pm

Totally worth the wait for it James!

And i do agree he does look like the bubble bobble sprites from the NES on the game bay game for a second i thought it was a skit where the cartridges were mislabeled.

  92. The Don of Louisville September 5, 2009 @ 12:52 pm

Epic win. The Nerd playing new games was a joke that needed to be done, and you’re awesome for doing that. By the way, I’d like to use that copyrighted super-bad nerd word. I bet you called it Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, didn’t you?

  93. sphinxah September 5, 2009 @ 1:26 pm

    awsome review james !!!

does anyone know what song he used at the ps2/xbox part ?

  94. RYGAR_the_Unethical September 5, 2009 @ 1:29 pm

FUCKING EPIC. Ending was so awesome. I WAS BLOWN AWAY. Bravo James! Bravo!

  95. Aaya3 September 5, 2009 @ 1:36 pm

    Nice!!
I like this episode, it was hilarious!!

    Keep it up james

  96. JoJo September 5, 2009 @ 1:44 pm

What is that music at the end?

  97. Cash September 5, 2009 @ 1:53 pm

Helpless people on subway trains scream “My God!” as he looks in on them..

Anyone looking for a Godzilla movie fix should check out Crackle.com

  98. lastcontinue September 5, 2009 @ 1:54 pm

(Long time lurker and Cinemassacre watcher, first time poster here…)

That was an incredible episode, James… well worth the wait!

While I’m not a fan of the Godzilla series, I almost wanted to cry when I saw it–you’ve got to feel for all the Godzilla fans out there who are born too early because boy, do they ever get shortchanged from the good games. One fact that I discovered from searching the Web is that Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters for the NES–easily the worst game of the bunch from James’s review–seems to be released in North America only. Which makes the fact that they teased fans with the potential release of the only half-decent Godzilla one-on-one fighting game on the Super Famicom only to not release it to be even more heartbreaking and insulting.

@Asterra: Yes, I watched the episodes on both ScrewAttack.com as well as Nico Nico Douga (as soon as each episode gets Japanese subtitles). I think all existing AVGN episodes are subtitled except for Deadly Towers and Super Pitfall. Speaking of Super Pitfall: it was going to receive a sequel in the form of a localized version of The Mystery of Atlantis–another notoriously terrible game–which mercifully did not materialize. Another potentially reviewable game, perhaps?

  99. JPete10 September 5, 2009 @ 2:00 pm

Best. Ending. For an AVGN video. EVER

  100. dicnar September 5, 2009 @ 2:30 pm

hehe, i was hoping for a godzilla to pop out suddenly and engage in a Godzilla vd. The Nerd battle :D boxes crashing and everything. Great episode I felt kinda the same when I was younger.

  101. f16134 September 5, 2009 @ 2:35 pm

I actually love Godzilla 2 on NES, sure it’s dissapointing it’s not a fighting game, but you get to control Godzilla, later in the game. It’s not that bad :)

  102. RockSped September 5, 2009 @ 2:39 pm

Nice video ! As always, James !!
(LOL at the Godzilla game on GameBoy !!! ^^)

BUTTERBELLY => what are you talkin about ?? Yoshi’s Story isn’t the greatest game on N64, but it’s still a very good game to me !!

  103. Chaser September 5, 2009 @ 2:50 pm

Very good episode, one that focuses on the gameplay and not on some outside madness. Don’t misunderstand, I love when there’s a lot of live action (like in Crazy Castle), but an episode like this was one I awaited :) the Nerd texts also kick ass.

  104. dust September 5, 2009 @ 3:31 pm

    Another excellent and accurate review.

  105. alfunkso September 5, 2009 @ 3:35 pm

YOU ARE A FUCKING GENIUS JAMES!

    I laughed over loud

  106. Namrepus221 September 5, 2009 @ 3:52 pm

    Acctually… AVGN forgot several games.

There was Kaijuu-Oh Godzilla for the Gameboy (only in Japan unfortunately) Very awesome game. Side scrolling beat-em-up type gameplay. Much much much better than the puzzle game that was released in the states

There was also Godzilla: Real Time Battle Simulator for the Sega Saturn…Which I own an original copy of and STILL cannot beat because of my lack of Japanese language understanding. It’s almost like the NES Godzilla 2, but with 3d graphics and the ability at times to control godzilla and other monsters

Godzilla Trading Battle…well good fuckin luck finding it… I have a CD-R copy that some fucktard screwed me on eBay on (Paid $40 for a VHS copy of GODZILLA 1998 for a free “copy” of the game) I can’t find a legit copy of it at all…even from japan I can’t find it.

The Dreamcast games have been mentioned so I won’t get into them.

  107. waltsoph3 September 5, 2009 @ 3:55 pm

Ah man I can’t belive you dissed Godzilla on NES. :( I found that game to be awesome and I liked the style too. I agreee some of the play is a little repetive but there was so much more to the game! I’m surprised you didn’t mention the password system to continue the game either(or at least complain at how many letters it takes.lol :P )

Still Godzilla is an amazing game in my honest opinion. However the others you mention its like X-men..stay away stay far away from them!

( I didn’t know they made another Godzilla game for the snes. Man did we get screwed on some great titles during those days. :( I really hope you do a special sometime on japanese games we got screwed out of playing. Because there were some great games we lost. :( )

btw I still love the video. Great job man! I can’t wait for the next one. :D

  108. berati September 5, 2009 @ 4:06 pm

    Whahah the ending was epic

That gameboy version was funny i mean godzilla looked like a baby monster

  109. JAM September 5, 2009 @ 4:15 pm

Wow, James! I love your AVGN Godzilla Games review! The ending where you go Godzilla after you dropped the F-bomb is wonderful!

I think that the next things you do is the “You Know What’s Bullshit?” episode: “New Logos Replaces Old Logos” and then the “Total Drama Island”: The Complete First Season DVD Review!

    Ain’t that awesome?

  110. ZeratulsDomain September 5, 2009 @ 4:35 pm

This is the fourth vid now (in a row also) that has playback issue on the WMV…. DL’ing mov version ATM….

    :(

  111. Asterra September 5, 2009 @ 4:44 pm

@lastcontinue: Correct. I can understand why Deadly Towers wasn’t subtitled. Ultimately, what the Japanese seem to value the most in AVGN reviews is the actual review content, so that makes Deadly Towers uniquely unqualified. I was sort of surprised the latest Bugs Bunny episode got subtitled – but such is the scope of AVGN’s popularity, one supposes.

Interesting tidbit about Mystery of Atlantis. Perhaps the reason they axed that idea was the sudden realization that a sequel must usually have more in common with the original than merely that both are kusoge. Since we’re talking about Super Pitfall again, I have always wondered if I’m the only one in the world to notice that the spiders crawl backwards. I anticipated James pointing it out, but it never happened.

  112. JeremyA September 5, 2009 @ 5:34 pm

Wow goood looking game, what is it, godzilla chess?
    hahahahaha

  113. Trey September 5, 2009 @ 5:54 pm

The first thing I thought of when I saw that Gameboy Godzilla game was Bubble Bobble.

Here is the plot of it according to wiki:

“Various monsters that Godzilla had previously defeated, have kidnapped his son, Minilla, and hidden him somewhere inside the Labyrinth of Matrix. It is up to Godzilla to fight the monsters’ attacks and solve their many puzzles, all while navigating a much larger maze.”

  114. CessnaDriver September 5, 2009 @ 6:19 pm

Love to see a Godzilla game someday that is first person, er uh, that would would be first monster point of view.

YOU ARE GODZILLA! Seeing the world though his eyes. Oh well, maybe someday.

  115. jplee September 5, 2009 @ 7:04 pm

Two thumbs up from Japan, definitely need to play one of those PS2/Xbox games.
I still love how you say Destroyah!

  116. Dragonosx September 5, 2009 @ 8:07 pm

Thanks for reviewing these games! Despite the first NES one’s frustrating-ness it was one of the main reasons I got into Godzilla.

Compared to other games out at the time the game sprites looked really big and detailed, and I was already big on dinosaurs.

It’s also one of those games with the really long passwords, and the music is pretty repetitive.

Super Godzilla was a huge letdown too, but that super famicom Godzilla game looks sweet. I’ve seen the game sprites and wondered what game they were from.

  117. Namrepus221 September 5, 2009 @ 9:02 pm

    CRAP!!!

Nerd Forgot another one… They released the Godzilla fighting game for the Turbo Grafx 16 as well on the Turbo Duo CD add on.

AND THIS WAS RELEASED IN THE USA!!!

  118. Grayald September 5, 2009 @ 9:38 pm

Ha. My favorite type of nerd video. Lots of bitching with a healthy side of editing.

  119. 3DMaster September 5, 2009 @ 9:49 pm

Fuck yeah! The angry video game nerd is back!

It’s been some time since he got curse up a good shit storm, it was great to hear him again.

The rest of the video was great too!

It really makes you think: what were those idiots back in the 80s and 90s thinking when they made those games…

Hmm… do you think the creators of the new games on PS2 and X-Box were players of those piles of shit, and in some brainstorming meeting, the boss asked, “Anyone any ideas?”

And one guy suddenly realized. Here’s his chance! Finally make the games that should have been 20 years ago. The game he’s been desperate to play for 20 years. Here’s his chance to finally make his dream come true: “A Godzilla game. Monster against monster, while smashing a city around them.”

  120. joliet_jane September 5, 2009 @ 10:06 pm

Poor AVGN! Happiness only brings him pain! :-D

  121. Sir Dingly Dang September 5, 2009 @ 10:14 pm

Aaagh James you gotta tell me the name of that song starting at 13:23!!

  122. B-17Bahhmer September 5, 2009 @ 10:20 pm

Wasn’t King Kong Vs. Godzilla also a theatrical release?

Anyway, I loved this review. I’m a huge tokusatsu fan, so by extension I have an appreciation for kaiju. Yet I have to wonder why it’s only with last-gen consoles that people in America ever got decent monster fighting games.

I’d totally play those games too. They might fill the void left by Tech Romancer after I had to sell my Dreamcast. Sniff.

  123. nillic September 5, 2009 @ 10:52 pm

This is probably my favourite video since the Power Glove. You are awesome, just plain fucking awesome.

  124. toyman2581 September 5, 2009 @ 10:55 pm

Great episode! I was hooked on the Godzillathon reviews so this review was extra bitchin’.

I nearly pissed myself when you screamed and then raked all those games off the shelf! Classic AVGN.

  125. ScaryManiac September 5, 2009 @ 11:05 pm

Hey James, you have one thing in common with Meryl Streep :P You can’t do nothing wrong!

  126. Crystal6 September 5, 2009 @ 11:54 pm

YAY! There’s the ANGRY video game nerd I know and love. (Don’t take that the wrong way, sick freaks.)

I don’t know what did it but it seemed more passionate there. :D Make me feel like I’m watching the old videos again.

  127. elcalvo September 6, 2009 @ 1:17 am

    FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!

  128. BillyHW September 6, 2009 @ 1:57 am

You can play Super Famicom carts on the SNES, you just have to cut these two little plastic tabs inside the cart slot with some pliers.

You probably could have gotten the Japanese cart via mail order back in the day. Remember those awesome ads in the game magazines for all the Japanese stuff?

  129. rayvac September 6, 2009 @ 2:33 am

The funniest part for me is when he played that gameboy game. I couldn’t stop laughing. Godzilla was such a cute dinosaur in that game and the music fit perfectly LOL.

  130. rognerius September 6, 2009 @ 3:03 am

I really like this ending; James’s reaction about XBOX and PS2 Godzilla games versions was superb, I couldn’t stop laughing.

  131. Stalqbee September 6, 2009 @ 5:37 am

You’re definately back into shape dear James.
This was probably the best ‘regular’ review you’ve done in a while.

  132. Henrik September 6, 2009 @ 5:50 am

Heh, I was actually looking into Godzilla: Unleashed after the Godzillathon last year, almost bought it.

Always fun to see the nerd playing something from a more recent generation. It’s kind of like a man from the middle-ages that ends up in the modern world x)

  133. Martin Ekdahl September 6, 2009 @ 7:56 am

Great review. Rah! I want to go rampage in the city when I see those games..

  134. Blowjob Roulette September 6, 2009 @ 7:58 am

Pretty sure his new swearword was ‘Funt’.

  135. ZEON September 6, 2009 @ 7:59 am

    I have to say SHIT
And I want to say a Chinese word
    哥”屎”拉(Godshitla)

  136. adivel September 6, 2009 @ 8:03 am

You will give review for “Batman Arkham Asylum” like the new Ghostbusters? I heard it is the best comics game ever.

  137. THE T V1RUS September 6, 2009 @ 8:31 am

I must say, this is in my top 5 favorite AVGN reviews. Im going to be showing this review to all my friends. This video has to many good parts to name. I was laughing during the entire video. I think its time for the nerd to play Resident Evil Survivor.

  138. THE T V1RUS September 6, 2009 @ 8:43 am

Also, hope to hear your new word in a later episode.

  139. Asterra September 6, 2009 @ 8:43 am

Before we move on to a new video, I’d like to nail this one down.

To me, AVGN episodes are mostly an entertaining combination of comedy and nostalgia. I don’t expect to be wowed by moments which are awesome (not nostalgic, not humorous, just awesome), but that’s pretty much what I got out of that Xbox/PS2 montage, and the music was a major factor (the editing was also quite well done). If I’d heard that specific track in any game I was playing, it would have blown me away. So add my name to the pile of those who would love to know:

Just what was the music used during the Xbox/PS2 montage?

  140. robopenis September 6, 2009 @ 8:44 am

ok i didnt read all the comments butttt you can play jap-a-knees snes(super famicom) games on your us snes there are to tabs in-side the game slot that you can re-move … if you do put the game in and ride but some newer snes-es have me-tale ones just look it up on the inter-netts oh and REALY look it up because i dont want you to brake your shit i did it and it does work BUT i have an older snes

  141. Optics September 6, 2009 @ 9:16 am

I wonder what the Nerds curse was..

  142. robopenis September 6, 2009 @ 9:17 am

as for the new curse word i think you just ask-ed “where are the bathroom beds?” in an alien ling-go

  143. mirkec September 6, 2009 @ 10:32 am

    Woho James!
Don’t say that! Late 80s and 90s were the golden age of gaming.PS 2 was ok,but it was all over by then. Anyways, nice one.I’m gonna keep tuned for new episodes so I can remember my childhood now and then.

  144. sconethief September 6, 2009 @ 10:39 am

Awesome! You gave me the urge to play godzilla save the earth! still is awesome as ever :D

  146. edinfang September 6, 2009 @ 11:43 am

I’m not gonna Rant but Godzilla save the earth was the worst game I played growing up PLEASE just… play more into it it’s actually such a shit load of fuck and almost as bad as the NES Games I’d say although I haven’t actually played them :)

  147. Cyril ViXP September 6, 2009 @ 11:57 am

Very stylish and interesting! I like it! Great, thanx!

  148. soma_sama September 6, 2009 @ 12:18 pm

oh man!!!! you are awesome, james i`m from equator and i and my friends watch your videos, they are so funny, but this was graet, is the truth that our childhood passed away, and that FFFUUUUUUUCCCCKKKK frum the bottom of your heart was justified.

  149. Mariusz69 September 6, 2009 @ 12:52 pm

06:20 Looks like the monster is trying to blow Godzilla

  150. Devngel September 6, 2009 @ 1:06 pm

DUDE I had that VOID TOO… but instead of trying to find authentic Godzilla games… I played Rampage… it was Kinda like godzilla

  151. lastcontinue September 6, 2009 @ 1:38 pm

@Asterra: Interesting observation… although to be honest, I was paying more attention on the subtitles and what kind of localization (if any–for example, NES=>Famicom, Genesis=>Mega Drive, etc.) was done to them than the comments. Maybe I should re-watch the reviews on Nico Nico Douga and pay more attention to the comments.

Also, at the time I made my first post on this thread, I didn’t bother to check Nico Nico Douga, but it turns out that Super Pitfall’s been subbed too–so feel free to check it out :)

  152. Jarooda September 6, 2009 @ 2:22 pm

It is weird seeing him play PS2 and Xbox!! Did you think they were awesome games or were they just ok??

  153. woutie September 6, 2009 @ 2:24 pm

haha, “I don’t know this Playstation 2 and XBOX stuff…”
Those were the games you wished to play when we were young…

Good work james… very good work!

  154. Mewgle September 6, 2009 @ 2:44 pm

This episode fuck ass! Good job james

  155. Asterra September 6, 2009 @ 5:33 pm

@lastcontinue: It’s a fun juggle to read both the subs and the comments. The subtitles are, in my opinion, often too truncated in meaning, leaving out important nuances. Sometimes they’re outright inaccurate. Re-watch the first Ghostbusters episode (ep21) when James comments on the condition of his Stay Puft action figure. The mistranslation there is catastrophic.

And yeah, I did notice that Super Pitfall is already up. I knew that game was very well known in Japan, but the speed with which it was subtitled, after the long wait for Bugs Bunny, was startling. This makes me suspect that Godzilla will be up within a handful of days.

  156. Redfish12X September 6, 2009 @ 7:10 pm

This was a very good episode, except for one part. One sole part.

    THE NERD’S OPINION IS WRONG.

About 14 and a half minutes in, he says “Damnit, I was born too fucking early!”

I was born in 1992, and I would argue just the opposite. It was that weird time when just when I was getting into video games, the N64 was coming around, so that was my first console, and I still hold it dear to my heart. But the times were so different. The magic of the 80’s were gone. It still sucks that the first game I ever played was 3D (Super Mario 64). I would trade everything to be an 80’s kid. You may think you were born too fucking early? No. I was born too fucking late.

  157. Redfish12X September 6, 2009 @ 7:23 pm

Also, the first few comments say “Worth the Wait”.

For the past few reviews, the releases have been in 15-day intervals, give or take. I make a mental note when 15 days is and then check the days before (and sometimes after, depends). You should too.

  158. Johny_lovin_it September 6, 2009 @ 8:20 pm

Godzilla released in theatres, 1985 and 2000 titels. He says the 1998 version doesn’t count. How come? Cuz’ its not a japanese version?

Personally, I favor the 1998 a lot! I mean it may sound excusable cuz’ I did not see the 1985 and 2000 one, but I see the covers. The 1998 was original and I find this Godzilla character in this movie quite awesome like an actual reptilian dinasour figure. Godzilla technically is a mutated chamileon and so this godzilla is straight up like a camelleon figure so it makes a lil’ more sense in a way. Japanese version stands up pretty tall but moves a lil’ slower than the American Godzilla.

Ok, sure. Its not from Japan, so its our own original godzilla theory from America which makes a lil’ sensible. Graphics may seem cheesy to some viewers but I really liked it a lot, it sure was scary to me as a kid. But what touched me the most was the ending when Godzilla dies and I hear his/her heartbeat and made me cry for the first in any movie I’ve seen and been in and at the same time feeling sensitive about things. That movie is my personal favorite godzilla movie of all.

Still, why does The Nerd feel this movie doesnt’ count as released in the theatres? He refers only japanese based godzilla movies? Tell me his reasons why this one doesn’t count still. Please?

  159. alucard September 6, 2009 @ 8:29 pm

@Redfish12X: Well I cant speak for DiceInTheMirror but i wasnt complaining, it was just because the video didnt get posted till 11:00 PM and it’s usually not that late that’s all I meant.

  160. smb3 September 6, 2009 @ 8:47 pm

is this game youre fucling nightmare

  161. Darkenmal September 6, 2009 @ 10:08 pm

lol SMB3 your spelling is mine.

  162. SparcMan September 6, 2009 @ 11:28 pm

One of your best episodes ever James! I have to agree that the ending was awesomely badass epic!
Similar to you, I grew up in the mid-70’s to late-80’s, but I ended up an Angry Computer Game Nerd. I never had a proper game console until I got an SNES back in the early 90’s, but I did have a Commodore 64 back in the early 80’s (or rather my dad had one that I played on all the time until I could afford to buy my own).
In fact, the only consoles I’ve ever owned were Gameboy, SNES, N64 and PS1 and I don’t have any of them anymore.

  163. TelMarine September 6, 2009 @ 11:35 pm

This was quite good, probably the best since the Transformers review.

Small thing I’ve noticed the last two episodes, that interspersed with the swearing will be “censored” versions of the words. Like wiener instead of dick/cock/etc. or butt instead of ass. Is this because of the criticisms of too much swearing? I think that’s part of what makes it so funny, just being so over the top and ridiculous. It sounds odd in my opinion when the toned down words are randomly thrown in there.

  164. Blade September 6, 2009 @ 11:38 pm

Man, was so excited to watch this episode. Had my nice cold drink and was ready to watch the new Nerd. Loved the review James. Great work.

  165. Arska September 7, 2009 @ 1:12 am

WOW Great video, much better than crazy castle

  166. Asterra September 7, 2009 @ 1:29 am

@Johny_lovin_it: Since James probably knows more about Godzilla movies than the combined wisdom of his entire fanbase, I would say he has the clout to offer his opinions on the matter with authority. If you want a more solid reason as to why the 1998 movie doesn’t count, then watch his review in the Godzillathon.

  167. psamathos September 7, 2009 @ 5:01 am

Amazing. I loved the PS2/XBOX montage at the end. Seeing all your dreams regurgitated into your face was hilarious.

  168. Redfish12X September 7, 2009 @ 12:55 pm

@Alucard: I understand that there was no complaint, I don’t mind waiting for true gold (although I admit I was damn worried this February. I breathed a HUGE sigh of relief upon seeing “My NES Collection”).

@TelMarine: I’ll be honest, I didn’t notice. It was cool at first to count how many swears he made per video but I stopped a while ago.

@Eveyrone: So, who else disagrees with the Nerd near the end? I’m curious.

  169. gabriot September 7, 2009 @ 4:03 pm

I haven’t laughed that hard at an AVGN vid since like 2006 or 2007, awesome vid! Laughin my ass off at the whole gameboy part.

There was another Godzilla game either for the SNES or N64 that came out in the U.S. that was probably a game that you would’ve been looking for around that time. It was in full 3d but the controls were pretty clunky I remember.

  170. Dragonzero September 7, 2009 @ 11:58 pm

Did you know that the Gameboy Godzilla Game was actually called “Godzilla-kun”?(kun being a term of affection used by girls on boys)
and the title screen in the japanese version looked like this: http://www.emuparadise.org/Gameboy/Titles/Godzilla-kun%20(J).png

So it’s no wonder the game looks rather childish, it was meant to be.
though I still can’t believe they did that in the US version. XD

  171. RPGaholic September 8, 2009 @ 2:11 am

Well, I know that the AVGN will always amplify the crap factor of any game, but I actually liked Super Godzilla for the SNES.

First off, you’re really a human controlling Godzilla, and you got to fight monsters that you mostly recognized (I thought that Battra was just Battle Mothra, with different coloration, not Black Mothra, yang to Mothra’s yin) and the option to power up to Super Godzilla (which looked similar to Space Godzilla) before you fight Mecha-Ghidorah or not.

Also, if you left a fight to go recharge, the monsters didn’t regain any health.

The final fight against Bagan was just one of those moments that made me go WTF? Especially since you were supposed to save the city before it was mostly gone, Bagan shows up and destroys the city completely, then you just get Super Godzilla to unleash the f@#*in’ fury on him and win the game. Also, if you’re forced to use a continue, you get the Godzilla roar and his eye re-opens to show he’s back in the fight.

  172. Acheron_iD September 8, 2009 @ 6:02 am

The Gameboy version reminded me of Boomer’s Adventure in ASMIK World, a Gameboy game I loved playing when I was little. I hope I still have it, but the dinosaur you control looks a lot like their Godzilla

  173. Pipmon September 8, 2009 @ 1:25 pm

What is the song called that plays during the new Godzilla game montage and where can I get it?

  174. Michael September 8, 2009 @ 4:54 pm

Hey nerd. I’ve played all these games before. I’m gonna be commenting on all your reviews from now on so keep an eye out.

Yes i have watched EVERY review you have ever done..
No i’m not a stalker.. ;) I just have too much free time. Seriously.
I find your videos funny, but the most important part to me is that it appeals directly to me because many of these games are the games I grew up playing.

I know your act of being the ANGRY video game nerd is part of your show, but it’s nice how you reflect your honest opinions about these games.

You’ve inspired me to re-start my collection of Oldschool games consoles. I will gather everything I can get my hands on!

James, I salute you my friend, for you have honestly become an internet legend in my eyes!

I don’t know what to say except that this is one of your best videos.

    Godzilla über alles.

  180. jimmysmitty September 10, 2009 @ 1:10 am

James long time fan, first time poster. This one rocked.

I have been a fan of many of the things you are since I was a kid (TMNT, Godzilla ect) and this brought back memories.

Also, I had Super Godzilla for the SNES and I beat it. Not sure how but I understood it and got all the way to the end and beat it.

And yes the newer ones were better. Much like how Batman: Arkham Assylum beats the tar out of most of the NES/GB/SNES/GBC/GBA ones.

Woot for Mark Hamill as the Joker.

Asterra, righT? I’ve seen them all and boy it took long to finish it before bed time. It was all fascinating, really. Now let me hand my next respond down on the table.

I understand his views now. So part of my thoughts was right that he feels it’s not a japanese movie that he shouldn’t feel to review it. Well sure, his opinions on this movie explains a lot why it’s not godzilla. I sure felt a little disappointed to hear his words about this movie. So as I see his good points as always on every review he makes, I can point stuff out I thought of. Since he doesn’t know me, and obviously everyone else, I gave more thought about his views and the movie.

I never saw the original godzilla movies. I never heard of them all so I would only guess what godzila would look like. I seen his awesome toy so that is what it would look like obviously. I’m sure a godzilla fan too but not as big as he is. But the 1998 godzilla movie was the first godzilla movie I saw and it was awesome to watch. I already gave my opinion on the movie so I don’t have to say it again. Let me say stuff that can be compromised from the Nerd’s views and my views on it.

Well I’ll admit that I forgot what godzilla really looked like from the toy so I don’t have an excuse on that one on what he looked like in this movie. But it was original in America. The godzilla in japan looked like that one so we all know that. But maybe the Nerd can look at it like this. Despite thinking this isn’t godzilla, it is, really. I mean not cuz’ it didn’t acquire the characteristics from the original, but because it’s original and brand new from first sight. Like this; godzilla from japan is Japan’s godzilla. Zilla as what the Nerd calls him, in America, is America’s Godzilla. I just thought of this recently when I first watched it so this leads me to believe that this Godzilla is America’s original idea of Godzilla. Whether it looks like japan’s godzilla or not or w/e he thinks of it, It really is Godzilla. And it wouldn’t be enough to just say that. Want more backup? I got it.

First, well from what I can tell, I did expect him to breath fire so when that one part he screeched and cars exploded, I thought that was his fire breath. Well it wasn’t I guess so ah well. So it doesn’t breath fire here, although I heard he does in the cartoon series.

Second, he says he’s a little smaller and when I saw his big foot, I did expect him pretty damn tall. From first view, he was very tall. MUCH taller than a T-Rex. He doesn’t stand up tall like Japan’s Godzilla, but looking at his many many movies, I notice his sizes keep changing a tad bit. And though he’s tall, he’s as tall as a pogada and knocks it down. Godzilla in 1998 is just as tall to climb up the twin towers. Not only that, the people are puny enough to stand up to him. Either way he looks at it, he is pretty big, but I’ll have feelings he’ll get bigger. How? Well hold up…

Third, his weakness was missiles and strong firearms. I totally did not see the original so from there, godzilla was indestructable. So I was not aware of that cuz’ I didn’t see it. I saw the jets take him down with pretty strong missles. We won’t know what kind of missiles are powerful enough to put her down, but if they are just regular missiles, then that is a mystery to me then now that I saw Godzillathon. He wouldn’t be called Zilla just cuz’ of those three missing characteristics. There are advantages he has over japan’s godzilla. He’s speed, accuracy, and graphics; I know, graphics aren’t everything, but I meant figure then. It’s reptilian figure shows more accurate explanations of godzilla’s birth. I have no clue how godzilla in japan would look like that. It almost sounds like in the movie, it was fake all along. I meant by how little it makes sense about godzilla in japan. In 1998, it shows it more accurate like what godzilla really looks like as in, how much it makes more sense. But w/e, japan’s godzilla in contrast to America’s godzilla, they look different and idk japan’s story cuz’ I haven’t seen it. But the bottom line is it’s America’s own Godzilla so it is godzilla but in America’s version. Now how would it be godzilla if it’s lacking it’s characteristics and they didn’t do anything to improve it? I know I know, they didn’t. So this is my next and final belief of Godzilla in America.

I know we’ll be seeing Godzilla again someday. However, I had an idea in my head how I want this to turn out. Since Japan’s godzilla series lasted so long with boy, over 25 movies, we get our own godzilla america version. But only 1 movie which was released in theatres *I feel it should count anyway. But he didn’t count it cuz’ I think he feels it ain’t the japanese godzilla look*. Anyway after the movie, the cartoon series came out. He breathed fire now so good improvement, right? Okay, well now I’ll inform my idea I would dream of doing someday. Let’s say I’m a movie producer and we’re making another america godzilla version. Well, that’s it! I feel japan has already so much godzilla movies from japan, I want it to be America’s turn to make their godzilla movies for a couple reasons.

I agree godzilla should be improved. As his missing characteristics were missing, and hypothetically a new godzilla 2 america version is coming out, then I’ll share my thought that the 1998 godzilla movie was the begining of it. In other words, it would be it’s begining form as not as tall as japan’s godzilla and not as strong as japan’s godzilla’s and missing fire breath. But as if a sequel would be released, godzilla would improve. But not just like that, it will take time. I would make sense to say that as he was born and began her raid in New York, the next sequel as she evolves will strengthen her body to be more invincible from the army. Also, would make her size slightly more bigger. And finally, she’ll breath fire. That should satisfy viewers now if those characteristics met the requirements what godzilla needs, including the Nerd I hope. But I still want America’s Godzilla to keep this form because this I personally feel is the best form of godzilla I seen. As I said, it’s pretty accurate when you think about it.

Now again, it’s a fantasy I thought of and it would be cool to make sequels of this godzilla version. Hey, it could be godzilla 1998 vs. King Kong 2006 or 2007, I forgot. But anyway, how cool would that be?! Both american monsters at it! And then when Godzilla would take on Ghidra, it would not be called Ghidra when the title cover shows. We would call it Ghidora finally! heheh

Little things should always be appreciated to know what godzilla is so I am aware now what the Nerd thinks and now I’ve given my thoughts and opinions and ideas of the future generation of godzilla. So he’s given me a new inspiration. I wish I could produce in the rebirth of godzilla and modify new sequels of america’s version of godzilla and make it really bad ass! Bet he would really shit his pants this time, yeah? LOL

Anyway dude, tell me what you think of my theories, ideas, etc. If it sucks, I won’t hold it against you, but that is what I thought of.

I hope the Nerd read my thoughts. ^^

Btw, Mecha Godzilla reminds me of Dragonzoar from The Power Rangers and my favorite ranger, Tommy the green ranger! XD

Hehe well second favorite cuz’ my fav. color was blue. ^^

  185. troilus September 10, 2009 @ 2:21 pm

one of the best nerd videos ever. i was hoping you’d get to these games. i have to say, though, i love the first godzilla game on the nes. great graphics for its time, and theres no real strategy. just mash buttons and tear shit up. very cathartic.

  186. rswandol September 10, 2009 @ 4:22 pm

Thank you for going back to the old format. I love the rants and the drinking way more than the special effects. Thanks so muchit was worth waiting for.

  187. all2surreal September 11, 2009 @ 7:36 am

Who is that music by at the end of the clip when you’re playing the XBOX / PS2 games?

  188. jimmysmitty September 12, 2009 @ 10:43 pm

Johny_lovin_it, I think the biggest thing with the American Godzilla was how they completely changed him. It was not really Godzilla. It was more of a giant T-Rex in a way.

While I agree that the movie overall was decent and fun to watch (Jean Reno is a kick ass actor ala the professional woot) it still did not show Godzilla like he should be.

In fact a remake for America would have to be like the Godzilla from the Millinium series since that one was just awesome. And there are plenty of books written by American Authors on Godzilla that would work in a series of them that wouldn’t kill Godzilla but would easily follow a continuity that makes sense (kinda like Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla III -> Godzilla : Tokyo S.O.S did) and the books are quite good, just reread Godzilla vs the Robotic Monsters.

And with the actual technology we have these days in computers and CG (and soon Raytracing which is amazing for movies) they could probably make a movie like 1998 Godzilla that would work on a realistic level. I mean I love the man in the rubber suit but I wouldn’t mind seeing someone getting crushed by Godzillas foot on accident or a car being completely demolished by a fight. hell they could even do Ghidora right with it.

but I still agree with the Nerd that 1998 Godzilla is not really Godzilla. Having been a fan since I could remember of Godzilla I think them making a second movie wouldn’t go over well for most people.

  189. richard002 September 14, 2009 @ 7:27 am

hi i think you shude make a review on the devil may cry series and show how hard the games is. but there on ps2 and ps3 so i don´t know if you´ll like to do that cuse you “think” is NES.

  190. Johny_lovin_it September 15, 2009 @ 1:19 am

Jimmysmitty, No no no that’s not what I mean. I mean by it being more realistic, I do mean just graphical. That’s all. I agree with Godzilla needing two characteristics such as breathing fire and being indistructable. I was just saying how I’ve been thinking of them making a new series of the american version of Godzilla as that kind of Godzilla but what it needs is the fire breath and being industructable. I was saying how to make it more realistic as how he was right now when he died by the military, well I thought of an idea how he was then, can make him more invincible by slowly coming back over and over with being more industructable. You know what I mean? That’s just an idea I can throw on the table for the producers to think about to improve this american godzilla character.

GREAT REVIEW NOT ONE OF YOUR BEST BUT STILL GREAT

  192. You Got Sherved September 21, 2009 @ 4:10 am

Okay, seriously, I imagine that the blooper reel (especially towards the end) is hilarious for this video. You NEED to do another blooper reel video. I feel it. Good addition of newer-gen games. Rare and funny, like always.

p.s. have you tried the Wii version of the last game yet

  196. JIB (resident Godzilla/SNES fan) January 21, 2010 @ 12:41 am

God… I tried playing SuperGodzilla last weekend and I couldnt even finish it, its just PURE frusteration. Buildings hurt you, powerlines hurt you (Explain that to a godzilla fan) tanks shoot from a distance, the water makes you slower, and all the mini UFOs…GOD THE MINI UFOs. MechaGodzilla’s a real bitch. Not to mention good luck finding Biollante (hint: its the red square, Double hint: the location of it is fucking random and the wrong one hurts you!) The only good thing that came out of my experience was that I was able to stop the second Battra from hatching for the first time in my life. Oh, and the final boss is hard as fuck. I have no idea how I was able to beat this game numerous times as a kid.
One thing you were wrong about though was the function of the L and R buttons. All they do is select the different powerups you collected during the stage. The only way you can choose your attack is buy continuing to walk backward.
A little tidbit; the japanese version has MechaGodzilla2 instead of the 70s version.

Anyways great review. You expressed the same feelings I had growing up about how the Japanese were holding out on all the good stuff and we had to wait so many years. I can’t believe I actualy wanted to get that gameboy game but never could.
