TNT’s MonsterVision TV Listings – Updated 6/11/2018

James / June 11th, 2018

MonsterVision (1991-2000) was a series of movie marathons on the cable channel TNT. Starting in 1996, it was hosted by Joe Bob Briggs. See my video tribute here .

The goal here is to give you the most accurate account of the history of MonsterVision and TNT’s horror/sci-fi marathons. I began constructing this list several years ago. My resources were old TV guides, and VHS tapes of mine. I looked for any commercials that gave clues to air dates, themes, and movie selections. Since then, I’ve had lots of help.

Special thanks to UncleSporkums for always sending me links to more TV bumpers/ commercials and TV guide listings.

Special thanks to Kevin Moncayo (Twitter link) for his extensive research in digging up most of this list.

Also thanks to everyone on YouTube for uploading commercials/ bumpers.

So far, we believe this list includes EVERYTHING OF THE PRE-JOE BOB era, and we are still planning to complete the rest.

THE PRE-JOE BOB ERA (1991-1996)

This list includes other TNT marathons such as “100% Weird”, “Shriek Week”, “Our Favorite Movies” and special events. Many of these marathons are unknown whether they were branded as “MonsterVision” or not. So consider this a catch-all list.

NOTE: All times are ET.

I don’t think Frankenstein 1993 is on DVD. I would like to see you review that if you still have it recorded on VHS, compare and contrast that version with other Frankenstein films including the 1994 version, and tell us whether or not it should be on DVD. Thanks!

I used to watch TNT, I remember the Monster movies they’d show. Occasionally you can still see Joe Bob at conventions on Monster Channel (100ymm.com)

Wow! Thank you, James, for this. Did you see all those movies?

I would do anything to be raised in the 80’s and 90’s. Sadly I’m the only one in school that actually likes classic black and white movies.

Nice, I enjoyed looking at all those old clips, especially Penn and Teller and that awesome Godzilla promo. I think I would’ve shit my pants if I saw that as a kid too!

First of all, thank you for the flashbacks. I loved Monster Vision on TNT (I think this was when TNN was also a channel). Anyway, my favorite was Penn & Teller (who are just awesome, by the way). When they were doing the best of the worst, I actually liked about half of “Reds” (1981). But other than that, the movies he hand-picked would’ve been the ones I picked too. They are are overrated, pretentious pieces of shit.

Dd you record any of USA’s Up All Night? Yeah the hosts were obnoxious bit I fell in love with B-Cinema because of it. Many of them horror movies. My introduction to the TROMA Universe is because of Up All Night. I would love to see a feature on that.

I miss Monster-Vision. I was there at the beginning and came armed with VHS tapes, as well.

hey james or mike the 93 frankenstein movie poster is excatly like resident evil 2’s logo just fliped….its my fav game!!

    • March 15, 2013 at 7:25 pm

Very interesting. Good find! It sure does look a lot like it. Hard to imagine them looking to Frankenstein 1993 for inspiration or homage. It must be a coincidence.

yeah probably…hey i love that fake E.T. poster i tried a slogan on page 8 of the comments…what u think…im also the guy at the too many games at the end of one of ur signin lines in 2012 with that weird game on turbo grafix..SIDEARMS and i had u write what the f*&# was that?! on the front!! Though I don’t think I ever got TNT, I know I’d probably have appreciated it as a kid since I tried to soak up as many kaiju and other monster movies as I could as a kid. That’s a big part of why I think the work done here at Cinemassacre is important, and beyond a mere entertaining distraction – it preserves a time that some of us grew up in that was full of imaginative and wondrous film, tv, and games, yes, but we were also being regularly exposed to the entire collected works of previous generations going right back to the beginning, thanks to television programming like this. The whole breadth and span of imaginative film belonged to us, in that time. I don’t know if kids today really get exposed to anything that isn’t more than a few years old, and most of that seems increasingly calculated, monetized and cynical. Thanks again for reminding me to count my blessings, James.

Like you, James, I clearly remember the good ol’ early days of MonsterVision. MonsterVision and MST3K both were a great part of my childhood, because like you, they turned me on to a lot of monster/sci fi/horror/fantasy films I hadn’t seen before. I clearly remember MonsterVision being my first exposure to most of Harryhausen’s films. I had seen (and it’s still my fav.) 7th Voyage of Sinbad before, as well as the unrelated “Captain Sindbad”, also a good movie (though without stop-motion effects). But MV was my first exposure to Golden Voyage and Tiger’s Eye for certain, as well as probably Clash of the Titans, all three of which I absolutely loved. It was also my first exposure to Earth vs. The Flying Saucers, Mysterious Island, First Men in the Moon, and 20,000 Million Miles to Earth. I can’t remember whether or not they ever played It Came From Beneath the Sea, but they may have and I just don’t remember it. I’m also 90% certain they played Valley of Gwangi and One Million Years BC as well.

MonsterVision was also my first exposure to such greats as The Thing From Another World, It Terror From Beyond Space, This Island Earth, and probably Them as well. Possibly even The Blob, though I know we had that on tape too. Not to mention not-so-greats like Plan 9 From Outer Space, From Hell It Came, The Cyclops and The Monster That Challenged the World. I also clearly remember seeing movies like The Land Unknown, Journey to the Center of the Earth (1951), Dinosaurus, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Day the Earth Stood Still around that same period (1992-1993), but can’t remember whether or not they were played on MV at all, or if I saw them on TV elsewhere.

Regardless, it was a great time. At that age (10-12), I didn’t pay any attention to how “campy” or cheesy some effects or acting or plotline would be. I even took something like Plan 9 From Outer Space at total face value, and just watched and enjoyed it, just took it in. I kind of miss being that open and uncritical, to be honest.

I’m sure I saw some of the other Godzilla marathons they did, though I don’t remember there being THAT many of them, personally. The main one that stands out in my memory, was the one they did for New Year’s Eve weekend, must’ve been when it was turning 1993, but it could have been 1994? That was one of the happiest weekends of my childhood, because I was allowed to stay up and watch them all, and my grandmother even stayed up to help me record them, because she knew I loved Godzilla so much.

Good times. I like Joe Bob well enough, he was indeed funny and charming. I just didn’t like the kinds of movies MV usually showed once he took over. I missed the old classics, and even not-so-classics. I guess it’s like I tell my friends, I’d rather see (and sometimes even enjoy) an OLD shitty movie anyday, than to have to sit and watch a single MODERN shitty movie. Don’t know why, they’re just more palatable and likeable. Cheers!

P.S. For anyone interested, I actually wrote a blog last year celebrating that early period of MonsterVision. Hope you enjoy! http://www.retrorevelations.com/2012/10/monster-madness-memories-of.html

I remember monster madness, but it was It played after I was grown. I remember Joe Bob from The Movie Channels Friday Drive-In Theater.he could show R Rated movies of that channel, so it was probably a big change to go to TNT. When I was a kid, I remember Night Flight of USA channel. Also we had a local channel that turned into a Fox channel that used to play scary movies all night during the weekend.

The last episode on the Outer Limits marathon was called “Nightmare.” Thank you so much, James, for putting this together. My dad stayed up all night and recorded the Outer Limits marathon for me when I was small. This brought back MANY memories of childhood of my fun with Monster Vision!

This is a wonderful resource! All the different movies got me thinking about my childhood. Maybe I’m wrong but didn’t you guys review “Demon Seed” and “Electric Dream” or was that someone else? The reason I ask is I seem to remember seeing them both on Monstervision.

For someone who claims to be a tnt monster vision guy you totally get it wrong . The show aired Friday nights ! Not Saturday night dummy .We meaning my wife and kids stayed up all night , recorded most (Godzillas) and enjoyed them all . Thanks for posting though .

Thank you so much for posting this great collection of MonsterVision material! I was head of Programming at TNT during those years — very soon after I was “removed” (shall we say) the franchise was killed. My Programming colleague and I created the MonsterVision and 100% Weird franchises and campaigned hard to get Joe Bob onboard. We loved the franchise and were always happy when it would actually get promoted! Not everybody – read mostly nobody – at TNT was a fan of these films, but we knew the appeal and loved them ourselves all our lives. I was a particular fan of “Outer Limits” and when we acquired that series in an MGM movie package it was one of the most exciting days ever for me! Glad to see all this material and wish there were more. I didn’t tape everything for myself, unfortunately. MonsterVision is one of the things I am most proud of during all my TV career! Thanks again for remembering!!

Wonderful stuff! I was lucky enough to meet Joe Bob this year, as nice as I had envisioned! One minor correction…” Free your mind and your butt will follow” is originally “free your mind and your ass will follow” by seminal band, funkadelic. Classic funk rock, classic Joe Bob Briggs!
