Berenstein Bears – Angry Video Game Nerd: Episode 142

James / October 18th, 2016

AVGN is back! This may be one of my favorite Halloween episodes. Games cover Sega Genesis, Atari 2600, and GameBoy Color. And before you comment on the spelling… just watch the video. Trust me.

    Episode 142. Impressive.
    Keep up the good work!
new avgn episode is like a new game of thrones episode.

    • October 19, 2016 at 10:31 am

Berenstein is a German name and it’s pronounced exactly the same as Berenstain. Both are pronounced as the STEIN in FRANKENSTEIN. Of course yanks mispronounce it because they speak English and not German.

You must love the way they pronounce Adolf.

Wrong, this is simply an example of the Mandela effect.

No fucking way!! New AVGN episode?! Thanks James!

      October 18, 2016 at 9:52 pm

This was a really cool episode. I would seriously love to see you flesh this idea out and make a little trilogy of episodes or something involving alternate universe Nerds. Perhaps a few nerds banding together (with obvious differences like maybe a nerd without glasses, maybe a nerd that wears some other dorky outfit but not a white button down shirt, maybe a nerd who permanently partners with shit pickle) or maybe perhaps have our nerd pull a “Quantum Leap” and go to alternate nerd realities and fix events that went wrong…maybe in one universe R.O.B. succeeded in world domination, or another universe where the Joker killed “BatNerd”.

The possibilities are truly endless with infinite realities!!

      • October 19, 2016 at 10:29 am

Indeed The Sliders aspect is so cool. in one version Mike is the nerd,in another Kyle, in onother Pat(did you see the Pat episode with James the video game punk?) and in another there could even be a female AVGN (portrayed by the “princess” from Living in 8-bits).

      • October 19, 2016 at 10:31 am

Could even explain the Nerd’s deaths in Crazy castle or his Superpowers in the Superman/X-men episodes. Would love to see the Trek Nerd again.

        @Niki Coppola

Totally! I absolutely love those ideas! My favorite episodes of all time are the ones where James acts with himself. He’s really fucking good at it.

    October 18, 2016 at 8:59 pm

That video really got me into the Halloween spirit. I hope there will be sequels because that was a lot of fun. Thanks

  • October 18, 2016 at 9:01 pm

Seems James is in the Berenstein Parallel Universe

  • October 18, 2016 at 9:05 pm

My LORD. Genuinely funny & spooky. Also interesting. This really is your style in recent years thanks to Board James. I can only wonder if AVGN might develop some continuity now…

    • ssokolow

      October 18, 2016 at 11:31 pm

I worry for what might happen if it did.

I tried Board James but didn’t really find it engaging and I’ve already lost Nostalgia Critic to Doug’s decision to dilute the riffing with drama scenes.

James has been the most consistent of the riffers/reviewers I follow in terms of not letting his personal interests drift series away from their original audiences.

  • October 18, 2016 at 9:14 pm

Well thats what I get for making a joke before watching the video!

  • October 18, 2016 at 9:45 pm

This is certainly one of the most original, thoughtful AVGNs you’ve done. After episode #141, which to me seemed like an after-thought based on much from the James & Mike Monday episode you did on the same game, I was beginning to think that ‘The Nerd” was losing his touch. This brings back my faith in the Nerd. Excellent stuff James! And keep it up – after all, a landmark episode #150 is just 8 episodes away!

  • Legato32x

    October 18, 2016 at 9:49 pm

I think it would be more interesting if you took the ideas you were using, such as the whole subplot about dimensions and such and made it into it’s own video. I’m sure that would take a lot longer but exploring your story ideas on their own would be really cool. I’d like to see a lot of mini-movies made by you guys instead of campy nerd episodes.

    October 18, 2016 at 10:14 pm

So I remembered that I got a copy of the Sega Genesis game for christmas 2012. It was a christmas gift, bundled with other games as my Mother knew I was starting up my retro collection. And sure enough, it says Berenstain Bears. I don’t understand. Why is this happening?

    • Gregorydale

      October 18, 2016 at 10:25 pm

Would be neet to see a series out of this, or perhaps another movie where you are ‘In a world where Super Castlevania IV caused the video game crash of ’91 and Shaq-Fu is played at all eSporting events, being heralded as the greatest, most balanced fighting game of all time’.

    • bud

      October 19, 2016 at 9:16 am

I refuse to call them Berenstain. That sounds stupid. I’m not changing my childhood memories!

I’m with ya brother! Berenstein Universe for life!

    October 18, 2016 at 10:48 pm

I experienced this paradox at one point as well in my adulthood (i’m 30) but did not know of the internet parallel universe theories haha. Excellent episode, a new standard for production quality, and your performance as The Nerd is practically perfected.

    October 18, 2016 at 11:03 pm

Oh. my. GAWD. I remember it being Berenstein! I’m not even kidding! (looks around) Does that mean a doppelganger will come out and try to kill me? Is it funny to mention I have a twin? What happens when the doppelganger of someone who already has a twin comes into effect??

    • bud

      October 19, 2016 at 9:17 am

      A gang of doppelgangers. :O

Amazing episode! My mind has been fucked.

  • October 19, 2016 at 12:16 am

I hate it when those parallel dimension thing happen. I came from one where octo means 6 and hecto 8. Where octopus had six tentacles for example.

  • Dan Siewers

    October 19, 2016 at 12:43 am

Man… now I have to live with the knowledge that I’m in a “stEin” universe.
I wonder if my parallel self likes Almond Joy.

  • frostare

    October 19, 2016 at 1:33 am

Well… I read the “Berenstein Scout Bears” in spanish a long time ago, but lemme check… Loved the machinations of reality in this episode! Also, after watching it, my brother told me “how are you enjoying ‘Dragon Warrior’?” (Dragon Quest) just to tick me off. =D

    • October 19, 2016 at 2:25 am

Although that was the adaptation title lol

      • frostare

        October 20, 2016 at 3:21 am

  • mysterywolf

    October 19, 2016 at 2:14 am

I had to go look up YouTube after seeing this video.
The person who uploaded it spelled it “Berenstein”
The video itself spells it “Berenstain”
    They pronounce it as “Bear-en-steen”
    …I’m now very confused.

  • Daniel Young

    October 19, 2016 at 2:41 am

This episode was awesome. But does this topic seriously not bother anybody? I remember it as Berenstein as well. I used to read these books in like 3rd or 4th grade to get easy accelerated reader points. Then one dayn in 4th grade I noticed that it was berenstain. I shrugged it off thinking that maybe they (publishers) changed it suddenly or it was a typo. However, I know that I read berenSTEIN books early on then it changed. This was around 1995-6.

  • Tross

    October 19, 2016 at 3:12 am

Wow, I just Googled the Berenstein/Berenstain Bears conspiracy theory and it’s an actual thing that set the Internet on fire. I wasn’t aware of this, but now I am. Well, my mind is blown. Anyone else? Also I recall the spelling being Berenstein. Does that mean I’m from a parallel dimension?

    • bud

      October 19, 2016 at 9:09 am

The more I read about this shit, the more freaked out I get. I always pronounced it Bear-en-steen too. If I had acknowledged the spelling Berenstain as a kid, I would have pronounced it Bear-en-stain. I don’t get it.
I guess it’s the repetition of Es. Maybe we imagined an extra one. I still think this is Candle Cove creepypasta shit.

      • Tross

        October 20, 2016 at 1:35 am

Yeah, the Berenstein thing could be written off as a bias because most names with a similar ending end in stein. As for the other two ideas/concepts used to support the idea of parallel dimensions I have no opinion on Nelson Mandela apparently dying in the 1980s as opposed to more recently as that was before my time so I obviously have no memory of such an event. However, the one that does convince me at least a little of the possibility of more than one dimension is that apparently the painting of Henry VIII holding a chicken/turkey leg doesn’t actually exist in spite of many, including me recalling seeing a painting like that.

  • October 19, 2016 at 3:26 am

Ahaha! James, are you a fellow E-verse expat (lol) or did you just make the nerd one in order to have fun with the conspiracy theory? I remember when the “correction” originally circulated tumblr–blew my damn mind.

My mom always pronounced it “beren-steen” when she read them to me so maybe I assumed the spelling (once I was able to read them on my own) just didn’t reflect the pronunciation. Perhaps over time my memory reassigned it a letter that made more sense? I’m wondering if a TV or radio ad for them pronounced it wrong, and the mispronunciation became common knowledge from there, confusing us all for generations.

Guess I’m glad I donated my old books ages ago so I couldn’t go digging to see if I had weird misspelled editions or something. That might’ve ended horribly!

    • October 19, 2016 at 4:04 am

Also: CANNOT get over the attention to detail here. The pocket pens, slightly weird so they didn’t match current or past!Nerd as we knew him. Yet the glasses frames, the lack of undershirt in the Friday the 13th episode, the Mike in cosplay (did you not auction that one off) and other things I likely missed. I love this kind of thing, honestly.

    You want to.

You know we want you to.

  • rob norton

    October 19, 2016 at 4:36 am

Why do you pronounce it Bearsteen, when it’s stein as in Frankenstein? Same goes for Ninja Gaiden, I understand the reasoning comes from “sai”, but it could be pronounced like gayden, like RAIn.

Never though I wound see this anytime hell foruseover.

  • Brad Courtnage

    October 19, 2016 at 8:37 am

Berenstein is the correct english spelling of the name. I grew up in Canada so I do remember the BerenSTEIN bears, it was obviously spelled that way in the U.K. as well. The American way is Berenstain. Since James grew up in NJ, which is not too far from Canada, it makes sense that he would have seen the english spelling. It’s amazing how out of control this has gotten. Lol

    • bud

      October 19, 2016 at 9:12 am

But was it written by Stan and Jan BerenstEin?

      • Brad Courtnage

        October 19, 2016 at 1:24 pm

That’s incorrect. Their names and Stan and Jan Berenstain.

      • bud

        October 19, 2016 at 4:04 pm

Yeah, so it wouldn’t make sense for the Bears to have their names spelled differently from the authors. Beren-STAIN must be correct. More like Blood Stain!

  • bud

    October 19, 2016 at 8:53 am

James, this was one of the best episodes ever. On par with the last Board James episode. I don’t know how you manage to outdo yourself every time, but you do.
I come from the Stein universe too. The Stein/Stain conspiracy you described gave me chills. I don’t know what to believe anymore.
It reminds me of the collective delusion of the the creepypasta, Candle Cove. I just watched the latest episode before watching this video, which makes it even creepier.
Well done, James. A perfect Halloween mindfuck video.
(I thought the TMNT NES game was good as a kid too…the GAME changed, not me! I knew it!)

    • October 19, 2016 at 11:19 am

“You didn’t change, the game changed……to shit” LOL best line in the video!

  • Fred . Fuchs

    October 19, 2016 at 9:24 am

Too much crazy story, not enough game reviews. You already did many conspiracy endings like this and they’re really uninspired. The spelling thing was interesting but it doesn’t fit with AVGN which is about videogames. I know you like making movies but you’re going way too far.

  • Pablo1989

    October 19, 2016 at 10:15 am

    😀 Whoa awesome twist

  • October 19, 2016 at 11:21 am

Holy crap, this episode was brilliant! I was honestly wondering how you’d pull off a Halloween episode from the Berenstain Bears, but I never expected anything like this! This might be my new favorite Nerd episode. Good job, James!

Great video as always. I always thought they were Berenstein Bears. I loved these books, I actually have been reading them to my son so I am going to have to look at them tonight and it will probably blow my mind. LOL

  • October 19, 2016 at 12:52 pm

Did you listen to Coast To Coast AM about the Mandela Effect 10/13/2016?

    • Brad Courtnage

      October 19, 2016 at 1:29 pm

The Mendela effect can be explained away easily enough. We as a people, despite all of our technology are living in the stupidest era in recorded history. When something incorrect is believed by a large group of people for whatever reason (mostly poor education) instead of cracking a book and getting the facts, a new fun phrase is coined and the theorists of the world get their wet dreams. It is a product of ego and the inability to say, whoops, I fucked up.

  • October 19, 2016 at 1:40 pm

I signed up for an account just so I can say this might be one of the best AVGN episodes of all time. Top 10 for me easily simply for the acting, plot, and effects. Great job James!

  • Rubizon

    October 19, 2016 at 2:45 pm

remember this episode 142. This is instant AVGN classic. Superb job …. as good as we remembered the old episodes to be! Kick ass great!

  • October 19, 2016 at 3:58 pm

A new AVGN episode and Monster Madness! Halloween is the Christmas version of October!
    What a blast! Thanks!

  • October 19, 2016 at 4:36 pm

I also remember it as being Berenstein…very odd indeed. Had no clue about the conspiracy thing. I’m confused

  • Skelingaton

    October 19, 2016 at 4:58 pm

I feel kind of mixed on this episode. On one hand the game review part was weak but on the other you managed to create an interesting story for the review. I’d say it almost felt like a Board James episode. I actually kind of expected a tie in when the different dimensions were brought up.

    Awesome episode!!

  • October 19, 2016 at 8:54 pm

Another thing I love about this episode is the “Bloodstain Bears”; I love having a new villain or monster in these new AVGN videos since I loved the old ones like Jason, Leatherface, The Devil, the Atari Jaguar cube, etc.

    October 20, 2016 at 12:30 pm

Outstanding! What a great episode, you’ve still got it.

    berenstain mandela effect?

  • October 20, 2016 at 7:45 pm

Congrats James, one of your top 10, 20,.. 30 works. I was thinking about saying top 10 but man, you have some great videos before. This one is one of my favorites. Keep up the good work buddy!

  • Paulballsftw

    October 20, 2016 at 8:26 pm

I think what happened was we heard someone say the name on TV and because of that it made us think it was spelled with an E and not an A. We just looked past the way it was spelled cause they didn’t pronounce their name like that. I too thought it was stein cause of how it sounds. Never did anyone say stain like a mark on the floor.

  • October 20, 2016 at 10:34 pm

    October 21, 2016 at 12:48 pm

This was actually extremely good! Most Nerd episodes have fun, campy themes and plot, but the dimensions concepts here are awesome.

But on another note, you missed the Game Gear version of the Berenst(a/e)in Bears.

  • Ryan Somethingsuch

    October 21, 2016 at 2:10 pm

You know what would have been really great. If you filmed the entire thing the opposite way(start with Berenstain as how you always knew it) and kept switching it every now and then so it continues the mythology. Since that’s all it is we just didn’t know how to read that well back when we were reading those books lol.

  • MelancholyRose

    October 21, 2016 at 2:50 pm

The reason I always thought it was “Berenstein” was because I had these books on tape that pronounced it as “Berenstein” and NOT “Berenstain.” I remember, as a child, being confused by the spelling and pronunciation of the narrator. I think sometimes the TV shows also pronounced it this way, adding more to the confusion.

  • October 21, 2016 at 3:14 pm

I am having a… wtf did I just watch moment!
