J&MM gets me through my workday every Monday. Love Mike’s live streams too. He hinted that this episode would be on the website before it hit YouTube in one of his Zelda streams.

      May 29, 2016 at 9:24 pm

Yes, truly great old-school AVGN episode! :).
Just one nit-pick: Paperboy is not in isometric perspective, as mentioned in the video. This game uses the CAVALIER perspective (also called OBLIQUE projection). You can see the difference here: http://toxicdump.org/img/oblique1.png (left is cavalier/oblique, right is isometric).

      • OMA

        May 30, 2016 at 8:59 pm

Also, I don’t get the “Even Nintendo still makes games, but that’s debatable” line. I know it’s probably meant as a joke, but still, does it imply that the products Nintendo puts out nowadays can’t be considered games? Current Nintendo games are as playable as they’ve ever been, and Mario games are still good after all these decades (Super Mario 3D World is a great example), so I don’t know what’s that about.

Re: Your question about “Even Nintendo still makes games, but that’s debatable”.

He’s probably poking fun at how Nintendo is chasing the casual market to the point where you get things like “Die a few times and the game will give you star power that never runs out”

Absolutely brilliant! Also, “Glass, sir. Double pane, sir.”

  • May 26, 2016 at 12:23 pm

It’s so damn refreshing to see an old-school style Nerd review.

I had Paperboy 2 for the GameBoy. Fuck every trying to get to Sunday. Although, apparently, your papers got an upgrade to where they could be used to stop fucking robberies.

  • NashKnight

    May 26, 2016 at 12:27 pm

Paperboy is one of my all-time favorite games, but not the NES version, but the original, on the arcades. PC version was pretty good too.

  • barlitone

    May 26, 2016 at 12:30 pm

Little known fact: federal law prohibits newspapers from being put into mailboxes unless they’re mailed. Only USPS mail carriers can put things in your mail slot, and they have to be postage-paid mail pieces. The lone exception: Sunday papers delivered on Sunday can be put in your mail box. That’s it. So this Paperboy is quite the little scofflaw, and his employer is encouraging (by way of awarding higher points) the breaking of federal law.

    • fanboyfilms

      May 26, 2016 at 8:04 pm

Probably why when I was a kid we had a newspaper box attached to the post below the mail box. The paper box looked like the ones in the game, with an open end you can stick a paper into. The mail box had a lid that closed.

      • fanboyfilms

        May 26, 2016 at 8:05 pm

By lid I mean a door on the end. I should specify I grew up out in the country where our house was a couple hundred feet off the main road so we needed a box for the paper guy so he didn’t have to come all the way to our house.

Another great episode! Hope there’s lot more coming!

  • May 26, 2016 at 1:09 pm

    That ending was hilarious!!!
    Great job as always James.

  • May 26, 2016 at 1:25 pm

I was laughing trough the whole episode! On of the best ones so far! You guys did an awesome job. This is so brilliant i have to watch it again.

  • May 26, 2016 at 1:29 pm

Awesome episode! Absolutely a ton of laughs! The only downside for me? No mention of the far superior Genesis version.

    • The Wicker Man

      May 26, 2016 at 5:08 pm

The Genesis version is garbage (and I say that as a Sega fan) just like the NES version because you have to keep tapping the d-pad to speed up. The Commodore 64 version had you going at a constant speed until you chose to speed up or slow down (kind of like cruise control), plus it had the great music from the SID chip playing throughout the game.

  • Cerrynerd

Great episode! I would have had the game go through Mike or Bootsy’s window. Lol!

  • Pyhankoski

    May 26, 2016 at 1:43 pm

Welp, i guess that ending means that the Nerd is dead. GGWP, NO RE. I guess it’s gonna be movies only from now on until Board James maybe comes back?

  • Pyhankoski

    May 26, 2016 at 1:44 pm

Also, i waited for him to show off a few of the other versions, at least the N64 version since he kept complaining about the isometrics, maybe the 3Dness of the N64 version would have fixed that…

  • May 26, 2016 at 2:00 pm

    Bravo, Nerd. Bravo!

  • Fred . Fuchs

    May 26, 2016 at 2:00 pm

Not bad. I initially thought there wasn’t much to say but you made some funny observations and jokes (although you already made the “it’s like throwing…” joke).

“Nintendo still make games although that is debatable”

    what.the.fuck?

    • May 27, 2016 at 1:03 pm

I agree, the only part i didn’t like. But i can pass it off as a retro thing. Some will argue that Nintendo constantly rereleases their old games on VC or keeps making the same franchises. But i say that 1 not everybody had the opportunity to play the games when new or has access to the original systems (Did it upset you when they brought BTTF,James Bond 007, Star wars/ any movie franchise you owned on vhs/dvd on bluray? and 2 while Nintendo may milk a franchise they generally will only release 1 to 3 titles o said franchise per console gen (Mario party excluded)Other companies release yearly sequels of Call of Duty or Assassin’s creed and no one bats an eye. Also Nintendo is the only Video game console manufacturer left that is 100% a game company and not a division of an electronics giant or Computer hardware/software company.

  • May 26, 2016 at 2:41 pm

  • May 26, 2016 at 4:39 pm

I delivered papers by bike from ’92 – 94 onto porches and into paper boxes. On my porch route we totally chucked them at the porch from the road while driving at a pretty fast pace.

  • bud

    May 26, 2016 at 4:45 pm

Holy shit, new episode. I was not expecting this.

  • The Wicker Man

    May 26, 2016 at 5:11 pm

I half agree with this episode as the game was the shits on the NES but the Commodore 64 version was great.
Fun fact for you – living in the UK I’ve never seen a mail box like the ones in the video or game. Over here we just have flaps in our front door where the postman or paperboy push it straight through and onto your floor.

  • May 26, 2016 at 6:10 pm

Did Mike cancel the Ocarina of Time live stream. I can’t find it anymore.

  • May 26, 2016 at 7:22 pm

Yet another great video. Thank you for making me laugh for all these years!

  • May 26, 2016 at 7:40 pm

That fucking ending killed me holy shit.

  • Paulballsftw

    May 26, 2016 at 8:53 pm

I accually got this game after I beat it at a friends house. I never thought it was that hard at all just keep back more and watch out and take your time to get through. I got it because of the classic feel to it and how I could go through it easy. Funny thing is I used to just keep one subscriber as I went through and just made sure I got that one to beat it. That way I just have one area where I would have to pay attention to the box and street and cake walk the rest of the way. lol

  • Grandpa Seth

    May 26, 2016 at 9:24 pm

lol did anyone else notice he left the kickstand down on the bike when he rode it in to the grim reaper at the end?

  • May 26, 2016 at 9:25 pm

I have been drinking alone for several days now. Hating myself and my life.
But now I see that there is a new AVGN video! Now my life is complete again! 🙂

    May 26, 2016 at 9:38 pm

Wow! New episode. Seems like it was only a month ago that the last episode was released. Pretty good episode, all around!

  • May 26, 2016 at 9:43 pm

    Great episode James!
I had a friend when I was a kid with only one arm and he was great at this game.

I like James Mike Mondays, Gaming live stream, Bootsy and Mike, too.
Funny how I hardly watch any TV these days.
This and some other shows(game of thrones) are the only ones that I watch.

Classic Nerd. That was great. Could have sworn he already did Paperboy. Guess not.

  • Wayne

    May 27, 2016 at 2:24 am

The NES version is too simplistic, and it ends up being even easier than the “Easy St.” setting for the arcade version.

Each of the obstacles in the NES version have the same patterns level/day after level/day, and once you know them they are very easy to avoid.

For the NES version, you pretty much just want to press up the entire time and then dodge left or right when you need to… this is very different than the arcade version where you actually need to speed up and slow down (besides moving left or right) in order to dodge obstacles.

Just got home from a tiring day of work. Made myself some food. Was gonna watch reruns of my favorite AVGN episodes (which is almost all of them) like I usually do, and lo and behold a new episode! My face lit up with utmost joy lol. Seriously, James and Mike, I really love you guys and your work. Keep it up man! Even if we have to wait months for an AVGN episode, it’s well worth the wait! And J&MM every week is also great and helps tide us over. Thank you guys. 🙂

  • Konstantin Maslakov

    May 27, 2016 at 5:02 am

The best episode since Ghosts ‘N Goblins for me.
Great writing and CGI, guys ! I laughed a lot…

    And vive AVGN, of course!

  • Simon

    May 27, 2016 at 7:15 am

Really funny episode 😀 The jokes were great and it felt like a more spontaneous episode from the past – classic 😀

    I really enjoyed it 🙂

  • Nicholas Demos

    May 27, 2016 at 7:48 am

GREAT episode James. I loved it. It felt just like the old days.
ONly thing that is missing is a bit more scripting. Maybe some guests. You know. Like the glitch gremlin, Jason, Krueger, Bugs etc.
I kinda feel like even though your production values have gone way, way up and we get a much more polished and technically superior final product the “feeling” is kinda lost… You know? Like when I used to make short films with my bodies. And we would gather and talk about the scenes and really take time to flesh it out as much as possible.
Anyway, I would really LOVE to see an old school episode with the quality of the newer ones.
Please keep making these. Weekly if possible :D.
    We’ll keep watching them.
    Thanks for eveything.

Hilariously awesome! Best one you’ve done in a while

  • May 27, 2016 at 10:40 am

“Nintendo still makes games, but that’s debatable” LOL. They have been shitting out more hd remakes rather than making quality entertainment lately. This episode hit me right on the nostalgia, it really feels like one from 07. Awesome job, although I did imagine a spin would be put on the whole delivering paper thing and the nerd would wipe his ass with it.

    • May 27, 2016 at 2:54 pm

A couple HD Zelda remake is a shitload? So rereleasing games on VC is a thing but remember not everyone played those games when they were new or has the systems to play’em. They rely on old franchise bt will usualy only relrase a couple franchise games per system unlike other companies that make yearly sequels. They are working on new Games for the NX as we speak.

  • Joker83

    May 27, 2016 at 12:24 pm

That was awesome! Very funny – well done James!!

  • Aaron1375

    May 28, 2016 at 12:15 am

It was one of those games that was fun to rent when they were a dollar and you could get multiple games, but not one you would want to be stuck playing for a prolonged period of time. As for the instruction manual, it was an American game, we’ve always cut corners.

James I loved this video man. I would say more lol. But it’s like 2 oclock in the morning. Just happen to see this posted on my YouTube subscription screen. But I loved it. Thanks James. That game….was fun but pissed me off a lot too. Haha…thanks James.

  • ToadRoad

    June 1, 2016 at 6:10 pm

What a return to form. While I wouldn’t say there have been outright awful episodes, some recent fare like Sub-Zero, The Crow, Darkwing Duck were pretty forgettable. This was his best performance in a while with a great script, and it got back to some interstitial shots, rather than just game footage and one static close-up on the AVGN. Bravo.

  • sirensofsilence

    June 1, 2016 at 9:41 pm

Yes. Definitely the best post-movie episode. All the classic elements, and I laughed out loud at the window experiment. Great stuff, James – you still got it!

  • June 2, 2016 at 2:37 am

I have to say, AVGN is my all-time favorite internet personality. The jokes are always on-point and seem tailor-made to my sense of humor. Nothing escapes his scrutiny. And that’s not a break dancer, that’s some schmuck trying to suck his own dick.

Funny video; although I like this game (I play it on the “Midway Arcade Treasures” disc for PS2, and the game options can be adjusted), it can be pretty frustrating.

  • June 17, 2016 at 9:42 am

    NEW EPISODE!

  • Cryptic Wizard

    July 8, 2016 at 4:12 pm

I know not to take Nerd reviews too seriously, but be honest here: realism in video games is not an issue. If you can accept that an Italian plumber doubles is size after eating a mushroom, I think you can accept newspapers breaking windows or landing in mailboxes. Still, it’s AVGN humor and it’s great like always.

  • July 26, 2016 at 3:39 pm

    DEADLY DICK!!? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • August 6, 2016 at 4:58 pm

I think not liking paper boy makes you a misogynistic asshole who hates women… wait… sorry wrong video. I’m thinking of ghostbusters haha. I never played this game, thanks for the warning! I won’t play it in future. You have saved someone hours of their own life to spend on more important things.

    * Turns on Ghostbusters 2016 *

OMG that sucked. I’ve just wasted the time you saved me! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
