Ghostbusters 3: History of a cancelled sequel

Mike Matei / May 19th, 2016

Ghostbusters 3 was a highly anticipated sequel. Let’s take a look at it’s history, of all it’s trouble and false starts, and how it was ultimately cancelled forever.

Nice research work, James. You’re also correct on how movie sales do allow these types of half-baked projects to keep going. Stay strong throughout this infantile temper tantrum throwers.

  • May 19, 2016 at 2:02 pm

Another calm, collected and well thought out video. Here comes the SJWtards to make libel against you once more!

James, don’t let these internet bullies get you down for having honest critiques
    and opinions!

    • May 22, 2016 at 3:30 pm

Speaking as somebody from the Social Justice crowd, I do think he made an honest mistake in that he didn’t realize how politically-loaded the argument he was wading into was, and I really hope the response doesn’t drive him into reactionaryism. Like, most of the time, SJs (Which would not be “sorry for having an opinion” but more “sorry for the clumsy handling of this issue”), learning what to do in the future, and moving the fuck on.

Like, that’s the problem with the way the fears of censorship lingering from the 90s has caused, it’s created a horseshoe theory where right-wing censorship and left-wing critique are conflated despite them having vastly different motives; origins and goals. And thusly it’s created a reactionary sickness in the comedy scene, where admitting a mistake is seen as tantamount ot defeat. God I hope James doesn’t succumb to that…

      • May 22, 2016 at 6:06 pm

“I do think he made an honest mistake in that he didn’t realize how politically-loaded the argument he was wading into was”

All he did was make a comment that he wasn’t going to see the movie. Nowhere did he insinuate that there was any sort of gender-issue thing where he isn’t seeing it “bekas wemminz”.

The only people making mistakes are the insipid fucks who are attacking him over something he didn’t even say. And this is coming from someone who cares quite deeply about social issues.

      • Andrew Beaman

        May 23, 2016 at 7:19 pm

“I do think he made an honest mistake in that he didn’t realize how politically-loaded the argument he was wading into was”
Not his problem. Oh, and reactionaryism happens when a person realizes the hypocrisy of the pc left, not a bad thing. We can only hope he makes a video about people like you.

      • June 6, 2016 at 9:36 am

It’s not an “honest mistake”. That would imply James did something wrong, and not the legions of people baselessly accusing him of sexism.

      • June 23, 2016 at 6:12 am

You people are worthless. You have no purpose and it eats you up inside that you will never amount to or change anything tangible in the world.

So this stuff is your pulpit. A movie where a BLACK STEREOTYPE offends you less than people who don’t like the trailers and idea of the movie, merely because “Sexism”

        You’re all worthless.

It’s a fun game and Atari put a surprising amount of care and attention into it.

There’s also a Lego dimensions ghostbusters level that uses samples from the original movie that’s fun too.

      • May 19, 2016 at 6:29 pm

It’s fun and cool, but it also has very bad gameplay designs from what I remember.

      • frostare

        May 23, 2016 at 3:47 pm

Oh well, that’s good to know! =) I’m also kinda interested in the enemies and new villain. But I’ll be careful about the gameplay aspect too.

  • Mac Tonight

    May 19, 2016 at 2:55 pm

Dan aykroyd said the 2009 Atari ghostbusters game is essentially the third movie.

For me I’m fine with that. I think a sequel would’ve worked back in the nineties but all the actors are just too old to be reprising the original roles. I hate when Hollywood digs up actors and tries to fool us that the actor isn’t way past their prime to be playing that role. Indy 4 was a good example of this where Harrison just looked old and tired, didn’t exactly bring back great memories for me and made me feel just sad for his character.

A passing of the torch storyline could’ve worked if Ramis hadn’t past away.

Hopefully the original characters can live on in games and cartoons and they don’t try and reboot the franchise again with murray, aykroyd and Hudson, just let the movie be remembered for the classic that it is.

Let the new generation have their female ghostbusters reboot and we’ll have our memories of the originals.

    • deniii

      May 26, 2016 at 3:30 pm

I suppose you are right with that last sentence.

That made me remember the 3rd Harold and Kumar movie where they meet the mafia boss’ daughter and there are a bunch of kids pretending to be tough. One of the kids mentions the Karate Kid movie and Harold asks which one of the four is he talking about. The kid replies that only one exists, featuring Jaden Smith.

I guess, if you look at things in a certain way, this reboot makes sense: new kind of movies for a new generation of people.

  • May 19, 2016 at 2:57 pm

Great video. I was never a fan of the Ghostbusters films. Just not my thing. I do agree though that the efforts to make a Ghostbusters 3 became comedic after a while. I think the new movie looks like trash, and I’m not just saying that because I’m not really a Ghostbusters fan. I’m saying that because it looks like trash. It also has nothing to do with the all-female lead cast. I’d say the same if it were all-male with basically the same story. It just looks dumb.

  • May 19, 2016 at 3:54 pm

Yeah, I heard the rumor about Venkman’s Ghost. IMHO, it could have beeen enormously funny. Plus, the character of Venkman was never into the gostbusting, I can see him sitting on his bum, when others get their hands dirty.

  • greedo

    May 19, 2016 at 4:15 pm

Great history lesson! And yes… the video game WAS supposed to be the sequel. Which is why I was puzzled as to why all this talk of a sequel came out… and then the new film was announced. Talk about disappointment. I wouldn’t have minded one last GB film with the original cast as a “passing of the torch”, but now that Ramis is gone, forget it. It wouldn’t work now.

    • greedo

      May 19, 2016 at 4:17 pm

There was also a time in the mid-90’s when Chris Farley and Will Smith were being considered to reboot the series. Would people have been whining as much about it if that would’ve happened?

Great vid, James. Shame again about the crap being tossed at you–it’s best to just not dignify it all with a response, as you wisely have so far.

  • May 19, 2016 at 7:48 pm

What’s sad is that even though the new Ghostbusters movie has received an overwhelmingly negative response from movie goers, it will most likely end up being a hit because people go see it just to see how terrible it is. And that will mean success to the studio who funded this shitty remake, and that will mean sequels.

I love James for telling the truth in the face of bullies who’d sooner lie to themselves and scapegoat an innocent person before they would ever stand up to a false accusation of sexism. I’m a feminist, James, and I know that women are just as capable as men in creating both good and bad things. The truth is, this movie looks very bad. A real feminist would never stoop to supressing that truth by slandering an honest person like these so called feminists. These are not real feminists, James. They are lying bigoted bullies who get away with their crimes because cowards give them moral license to do so. They have no decency, but you do, my friend. Just stay out of this mess until it cleans up. We fans will not let this abusive slander stand. We’ll take care of this, James. You don’t have to do a damn thing. We’ve got this.

With all the vitriol surrounding the new film, I have to ask the comment section what were their initial feelings and thoughts when they heard about the new Mad Max film (its a similar scenario to Ghostbusters).

Interesting video, I can’t help agreeing with your take on the endless remaking.
There would be so much opportunity for mediocre films that had potential to be remade better, but instead we get only the already most successful, high budget films remade, and guess what – the remakes aren’t as good – but the movie industry dont care so long as it makes money – which, good or not – these films do on the back of the name of the original.

Like I have said before they could do a start of newer Ghostbusters and the cast of Superbad would have worked. They have simalar looks as the orignal ghostbusters and they are fun to watch together. Seth Rogen could of been just in it as a friend or something but have Dan Ackroid be like the father of one of them and maybe they stubble upon the outfits in an attic or something. I think they could have made it work with those up an coming stars but it would of been better like 5 year ago but could still work now since they are adults.

Well, the never-happened-Ghostbusters-3 definitively died with the sad passing of Harold Ramis. I’ll keep part 1 and 2 as a treasure of my childhood, which nobody can ever take away. They will be there forever and they stood the test of time this far. There is no need for a remake/ reboot or however you want to call it.

    May 20, 2016 at 8:53 pm

I’m glad you’re taking a stand on this- the reason we have so many shitty movies is because people just go and see them. Even if they KNOW they’ll be bad, they do it anyway, I guess to see HOW bad they are? A movie could literally be 90 minutes of blank white screen and it would make millions as long as it has name recognition. You’re guilty of this yourself, seeing and reviewing the Michael Bay TMNT, which might be why some people think you’re refusing to see this one for sexist reasons. I’d like to think you’re just learning from your mistakes.

  • bud

    May 20, 2016 at 9:33 pm

The only thing I don’t agree with in this video is that they shouldn’t have made more Ghostbusters films right away after Ghostbusters II. I wish they had ran the franchise into the ground then, just think of how many great Ghostbusters films we would have to look back on now! I don’t think II was a terrible film, I thought it was great at the time. Instead, what happened is that they ran the franchise into the ground with all those animated series spinoffs. And while they weren’t totally bad, they kind of ruined all the momentum. They should have kept the films coming when the getting was good. And they also should have called Bill Murray’s bluff; as we can see with the most recent incarnation, he would have eventually done it.

Hey James, there’s a lot of controversy surrounding your videos, we just wanna say that we have been fans from the beginning and are even bigger fans now. It seems you have hit a nerve with political activists and stand up comedians, some of which were my favorites like Patton Oswalt, but sadly, his tweet about you was out of line and makes me embarrassed for him. I hope you always tell it like it is man, we love everything about cinemassacre and your love and respect for film. I was born in 83 and every time i come to this site it’s like im reliving those nintendo years all over again. Thank you and stay strong!!

    • mysterywolf

      May 21, 2016 at 4:07 am

I can’t help but think the controversy is majorly because people think he doesn’t like it “Because it’s women instead of men.”
Pretty sure the point is clear that ANYONE could have been Ghostbusters in the new movie and the result would be the same…

I mean I would have loved the old cast (whom’s left of it) to take the role of ghostbusters, but are a little too old (because they have aged after all) and then teach the girls how to do their job. Even if it’s only BRIEFLY- it’d also signify how Ghostbusters has definitely aged over time- but still has a place in our hearts.

      • May 22, 2016 at 3:39 pm

Yeah, I think grouping him in with the reactionary anti-female backlash on both sides is a mistake. Hell, he seems more upset over it being a reboot than it being all female (Which I kinda get).

Like, again, speaking as a so-called “SJW,” he made an honest mistake, what determines his character is what comes after.

And you said creativity exists? Apparently not in Hollywood because these just keep making remakes and reboots instead of fresh new ideas banking on the movie names and nostalgia for the originals. But as long as they keep making money, they will keep at this fucking formula…it’s one of the reasons why I’ve stopped going to the movies. There’s almost nothing I want to see anymore.

I’m with you, here, Don, 100%. I hardly go to the movies, anymore, because there isn’t anything interesting out there. All that’s out there are Superhero movies, and quite frankly- I can’t remember hearing about anything worthwhile this year. Last year was a bit of a misnomer, in that there were a few movies that I wanted to see. Other than the new Bourne, though, I’m not going to bother.
