Doug is not really good at commenting on games…

I love the nostalgia critic, but its obvious that going off script is much more difficult than many think

      • busterbeam

        November 7, 2015 at 8:43 am

I dunno if those had a script or not but Doug is at his best in his 50s film riffing videos, which ironically enough he saw as filler. His main Nostalgia Critic videos can be really bad because he has lame stock-humor like screaming or shooting his gun or whatever which is just not funny. Meanwhile in the riffing videos he had to actually come up with proper jokes for everything because he couldn’t cut back to his face making a “wacky” expression as a bad excuse for a joke.

The real problem here is that he really doesn’t care about games. He talks about them sometimes because he assumes it’s required of an “internet celebrity”, but you can tell he’s far from being a particular “fan of games” or “gamer” or whatever. He plays Mario or whatever in the most casual time-wasting way possible but he has no real passion for it.

        November 7, 2015 at 6:29 pm

He obviously cared and knew about this game because he was playing it better than James was and was pointing out tips throughout.

        November 12, 2015 at 10:02 pm

Alright, I take back my comment about this video then.

    • likalaruku

      November 6, 2015 at 12:12 am

You’re referring to his Simpsons or Bebe’s Kids reviews?

    • likalaruku

      November 6, 2015 at 12:14 am

I know someone far less qualifies to comment on games…FOX news & The Young Turks. Put their feet in their mouth every time.

      • November 6, 2015 at 6:30 pm

haha! what the fuck? i didn’t ever expect to see somebody reference the young turks on here! conlaturations my friend!

    • November 7, 2015 at 10:55 am

It is weird how this “community” reacts to nerdism and almost child like excitement to video games; when in fact that is pretty much what the whole site is about. I actually enjoyed the video immensely.

    • November 9, 2015 at 3:48 am

Doug, don’t you know you never go full special?

    • Billy Bitchell

      November 10, 2015 at 1:32 pm

Doug is not really good at anything. His Nostalgia Critic videos are painful to watch. His voice is annoying, his attempt at humor is annoying. He’s just awkward & his “wackiness” just comes off as douchiness. Besides that people always comment on the Cinemassacre videos he’s featured on about how he annoyingly talks over everybody.

  • Digity

    November 5, 2015 at 10:35 am

Ugh forgot Doug was this guy….

    • November 6, 2015 at 12:52 am

He’s positive and nice and all. But he’s just toooo intense..

    • November 6, 2015 at 4:36 am

      Yeah…
I appreciate James, Mike, etc trying to cross over and do videos with other gaming personalities from youtube, but I feel like Cinemassacre videos are better when it’s just Cinemassacre people. James, Mike, Bootsy, Kyle. It’s just not the same chemistry and these videos kind of suck to watch. Jontron is a bit more bearable but even the videos with him are kinda, I don’t know.

      • November 8, 2015 at 6:45 am

in all honestly, doug she have james on HIS show, not this way around i just cant enjoying an episode with him in it, it always seems to be about HIM and not the game

      • November 8, 2015 at 6:46 am

sorry that was a complete typo im not THAT much of an asshole
        \

  • November 5, 2015 at 10:55 am

Doug is so annoying to watch

    • November 5, 2015 at 10:56 am

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Thank you for that comment.

  • John L

    November 5, 2015 at 11:24 am

    Doug is a douche.

    • KennyM

      November 5, 2015 at 3:26 pm

Why would you be so rude John L? I love the nostalgia critic and i personally prefer him scripted, but you know youd never say that to his face either. Ps, who isnt better on script then off?

      • John L

        November 8, 2015 at 4:11 am

It may be rude but that’s how I feel. He’s a negative douche and with or without a script he’s not too funny. I would say it to his face. If he comes to Chicago or he wants to give me his number I’d gladly tell him and he would likely shrug it or or call me a douche. No big deal. He’s just not my style and I don’t think he’s a good mix with James. The content here is light. It’s serious but not a total shit talking downer.

Great video! Love SNES Beat ’em Ups!!!! \m/

    • KennyM

      November 5, 2015 at 3:23 pm

this game should have been 2 player simultaneous. That fact that its not takes it from a 8.5 to a 6, Just like Final Fight. Whats up with the snes pulling that shit? Thats why I was a Sega kid growing up, much more 2 player and arcade esc titles. Almost everytime time there was a dual release i always prefer the sega version

      • ToadRoad

        November 5, 2015 at 9:54 pm

The source material makes that difficult since it’s just Batman in the movie, but I agree. As a kid if it had been a choice between a one player beat-em-up and a two player one, I’d choose 2. When I was really young, my mom would sometimes even check the game’s box to look for little telltale box that told how many players.

      • ToadRoad

        November 5, 2015 at 9:55 pm

…Because I had a brother, not because my mom was a hardcore streets of rage fanatic.

  • Brent Rowland

    November 5, 2015 at 12:11 pm

Doug wasn’t bad, James however looked pretty bored the whole time. Must of been the game. Anyways good video keep them coming.

  • Psychojaws

    November 5, 2015 at 12:12 pm

I’m curious. What’s the time span between finishing a video and when it airs? Anyone?

  • November 5, 2015 at 12:26 pm

Such a waste that time is spent making videos including Doug. They’re never worth watching.

  • Contra_I

    November 5, 2015 at 12:56 pm

Made it about 4 minutes until I couldn’t stand Doug anymore. Not everyone handles being on camera well, especially Doug. Too hyper, loud, and obnoxious for any length of time. 0/10

    • November 5, 2015 at 1:02 pm

No one cares what you think doofus.

      • Contra_I

        November 5, 2015 at 1:09 pm

I don’t think I’m in the minority here after reading the other comments. Feedback is an important step in improvement. If we don’t say anything maybe James thinks people like Doug and he’ll continue to make more videos with him. I don’t want that, so I spoke up.

      • KennyM

        November 5, 2015 at 3:27 pm

yeah but you dont have to be so rude about it either. It’s easy to be a tough guy when your anonymous

      • Thin Thrizzy

        November 5, 2015 at 8:43 pm

If you don’t care what people think, what the fuck are you doing in the comments? That makes no sense. And to KennyM there, if this is your definition of someone being a tough guy, I feel really bad for you.

I would like to comment on the video with my opinion that Doug is really obnoxious here, really hard to watch, and his performance insures that I won’t be checking out any of his Nostalgia Critic videos. And I would absolutely say it to his face because I’m an adult who is capable of handling my emotions offline.

      • November 5, 2015 at 11:52 pm

Thin Thrizzy – I’m in the comments because I’m just sick of hearing bitchy ‘lil twats like you trash talk a GUEST on the show. It’s rude – I happen to like Doug, and think he adds when he’s on. If you just want james and Mike watch those eps – it’s not like Doug is or will be a regular – he has his own successful web show – and I’ve seen him support cinnemassacre –

    • November 5, 2015 at 11:48 pm

If you can’t take it, don’t try and dish it out. Oh yes, PLEASE we want more of yout input. You can only make this better. It’s two dudes playing video games dummy. When people start trashing a guest you like, your kind is always firsy to cry foul and take a ride in the Waaaaaambulance – waa, waaa, waaaa – book fucking ho –

      • Contra_I

        November 6, 2015 at 4:36 pm

Sounds like people on here have a real problem with diverse viewpoints. Someone disagrees and people try and shame them by saying their viewpoint is inherintly wrong with name calling and attacks. Seems counter productive.

  • November 5, 2015 at 1:16 pm

Doug, you’re great. Don’t listen to all the haters here. Great video.

For all those referring to Dough as “this guy”, you should know that he is a very popular video creator in his own right. He is the Nostalgia Critic.

  • November 5, 2015 at 1:25 pm

Since Mike has a nickname, Doug needs one. I hereby declare him “Decaf Doug”, because if anyone needs to switch to decaf – it is Doug.

  • DavySprocket

    November 5, 2015 at 1:27 pm

Good video. I like Doug just fine. I don’t mind having him around.

  • AnalogSandwich

    November 5, 2015 at 1:37 pm

    Another one with Doug? Skip.

  • call me squinky

    November 5, 2015 at 1:39 pm

I like Doug. Reading some of the other comments, it looks like not everyone enjoys the hyperactivity, but I like the energy and he come up with some good observational humour.

      November 5, 2015 at 2:45 pm

      I absolutely agree

    • November 5, 2015 at 7:45 pm

He tries too hard to be funny. You don’t have to turn everything that happens into a joke.

    • November 5, 2015 at 11:56 pm

I agree – other people just want AVGN all the time – they want the same fucking thing over and over – not everyone’s gonna be a hit – but it’s seems that rude pricks raise their voices loudest when they don’t like something and get their panties all in a bunch.

  • AnalogSandwich

    November 5, 2015 at 1:44 pm

It’s so obvious James isn’t having that much fun with Doug. He has a better time with Mike. Why does he keep doing Doug videos?

    • November 5, 2015 at 11:57 pm

No it’s not – if he wasn’t having a good time – the dude wouldn’t be on the show – especially when so many lil biches just blast him in the comments –

    • November 7, 2015 at 3:32 am

During the video it’s pointed out that they played the entirety of Turtles in Time while talking to each other but didn’t record it, they just wanted to play. So that suggests they do actually get along alright. I assume James has a “better time” with Mike because they’ve known each other since college (if not earlier), so it’s not really comparable.

It makes much more sense to compare how James gets along with JonTron or Pat the NES Punk compared to how he gets along with Doug.

  • November 5, 2015 at 2:33 pm

Doug has made me laugh in the past “As the Critic”. Hell I still watch his videos on his channel! However I do feel at times he is a bit “hyper” and perhaps even talks over people too often. Comes off as a “It’s all about me” personality sometimes as well. That said, he isn’t a bad guy but needs to be reminded who’s “show” he’s on. Side note, he is a GOD at YOSHI on NES.

  • Hanglyman

    November 5, 2015 at 2:52 pm

Batman Returns- James & Doug (get their asses handed to them by Catwoman)

  • November 5, 2015 at 2:55 pm

It’s fun when James and Doug talk about areas they have in common, like the movies. James did look super tired here though, but Doug was doing good considering it was on “Mania”

  • Weldin Dunn

    November 5, 2015 at 3:17 pm

They didn’t need to record Turtles in Time. J&M already did that. I would have abbreviated Turtles in Time, but well…

  • Jesky_Kayo

Sweet another James and M… aww man not doug again…

  • MonkeeJuice

I got this game and it’s because of the Batman video games review you did.

  • BADam

    November 5, 2015 at 4:13 pm

If you do the main story in Arkham knight before defeating Two Face you get dialogue from Dark Knight about how Harvey wouldnt’ve taken the ‘deal’ between with Batman and Gordon if he’d knew it was Wayne.
The movie and Arkham games blurred for me there!!

  • NashKnight

    November 5, 2015 at 4:35 pm

    Batman Returns: Awesome movie!
    This game: Pretty fun.
    Nostalgia Critic: Self-obsessed douchebag.

  • November 5, 2015 at 4:35 pm

Why are there so many awful comments against Doug? These people take Cinemassacre’s videos for granted and feel empowered to complain about the content of the videos. It’s ok if you don’t like Doug, but there’s no need to offend.

  • thomas chiles

    November 5, 2015 at 5:34 pm

doug really is the worst, isn’t he? this is one of the very few cinemassacre videos that i will not finish watching. love all the recent content though from James and Mike, keep that shit coming. i need it

  • November 5, 2015 at 5:36 pm

More videos with Doug please. Ignore the whiny assholes. I think he’s just fine as he is.

    • November 5, 2015 at 5:40 pm

      Amen to that.

    • November 5, 2015 at 7:54 pm

One man’s “whining”, another man’s “coolly and level-headedly pointing out obvious flaws in the product”.

      • November 5, 2015 at 8:47 pm

In other words…Being an asshole. Thank you for proving me right.

      • November 6, 2015 at 2:24 am

Nah…more like “having an opinion” and “being and individual”. It’s nice to apply critical thinking skills. You should try it sometime, too.

  • Grandmasterp

    November 5, 2015 at 5:36 pm

cinemassacre doing videos every day has been awesome. That game looked good and I like the Tim Burton Batman movies, maybe I’ll track that baby down and give it a try for myself.

  • November 5, 2015 at 5:39 pm

It’s always cool to see these guys together.

    • November 5, 2015 at 7:55 pm

If by “cool” you mean “unsatisfying” or “irritating” then I agree completely.

      • November 5, 2015 at 11:59 pm

I think that’s not what he meant – kind like your comment is respectful but meaning douchey and akin to an unwiped asshole.

    • November 6, 2015 at 2:22 am

…just like your English grammar kimbap πŸ˜‰

      • November 6, 2015 at 10:42 am

Pray tell, what’s wrong with my grammar? – cough – On a comment board, for a goofy web show about video games, and all the while responding to rude lil’ 10 year old trolls. Please, professor douche, elucidate.

  • SlasherMatt

    November 5, 2015 at 5:48 pm

I remember the day when I wanted James & Doug to play games together and talk naturally (like James & Mike) but Doug is really bad when unscripted. It’s such a shame but these James & Doug are really hard to watch.

  • November 5, 2015 at 6:35 pm

    Do the Genesis version!

  • JayRam

    November 5, 2015 at 8:33 pm

Hey James, post another video featuring Doug: people aren’t done bitching yet.

  • teenagewildlife

    November 5, 2015 at 9:55 pm

love the james and doug series!! they always have fun! keep these videos coming !! thanks!!

  • November 5, 2015 at 10:31 pm

Doug was just fine here. not sure what was found annoying. they played a game and talked about it and also the movie. they were unscripted. not sure what level of hilarity or genius is expected out of him here. Mike wasn’t an overnight hit either as i remember when he started appearing on AVGN more, people asked for AVGN to be solo, so he played with shit pickle instead.

I like that Doug works with James on his stuff and vice versa. it’s crossover and keeps their respective products from getting stale.

that said, i would love more to see their characters, nostalgia critic and avgn working together in a scripted video. my 2 cents.

  • November 5, 2015 at 10:51 pm

doug stfu lol so noisy, jesus. annoying. why is it like… everyone has to suck on james’s show… you try dude with glasses but you gotta ….special kind of audience…lol

  • November 5, 2015 at 11:08 pm

Love seeing these two together, always!!

  • THE_ENDR

    November 5, 2015 at 11:48 pm

Well that was awkward…. Hands down, the best Batman game has to be The Adventures of Batman & Robin for the Genesis. I wonder why NO ONE has ever reviewed such a sweet game. It featured Jesper Kyd, unlike the SNES version, it had a kick ass soundtrack! For a game released in ’94, it blew my fuckin mind and still resonates to this very day. It’s ridiculously hard, it’s 2 players, its pure skill side-scrolling. Do it.

  • Alex Messina

    November 5, 2015 at 11:58 pm

James is definitely like I know the fans ain’t gonna like this guy but fuck it he’s my friend LOLOLOL

  • likalaruku

    November 6, 2015 at 12:12 am

Man….& I thought Brad’s fans were hostile to crossovers.

  • November 6, 2015 at 1:00 am

Jesus lol.. People are mean. Doug is fine, he just needs to relax a bit.

  • November 6, 2015 at 1:39 am

Doug literally never stops talking. Good Lord dude, let James get in some comments.

  • Tross

    November 6, 2015 at 1:44 am

Wow, the SNES version is way different from the Genesis version. If I had a request I’d love to see you play the Genesis game. I think it’s also really good, though it does have some frustrating platforming.

  • November 6, 2015 at 2:03 am

Holy shit. The comments are so Anti-Doug! I gotta see what that’s all about. Watching Now.

  • sagigo

    November 6, 2015 at 4:12 am

Doug Please Shut Up what an ass i can’t stand this person … even James look like he had enough of him

  • Nicholas Demos

    November 6, 2015 at 4:29 am

I love these guys. Both of them.
They are on complete opposites of the spectrum (personality wise) but I can appreciate their honesty.
By the way, I’m always split on which Burton Batman I like the best. One day it’s Batman and the next one it might be returns. Either way 1 thing I’m certain of is that those are the only 2 Batman movies on my book.
And I can’t-fucking-stand the Nolan ones. That guy is sooo pedantic it’s not even funny.
Memento was the only movie from him that I liked.
Anyway. Kudos on the video guys.

  • November 6, 2015 at 5:39 am

I like all the videos on this site, I don’t get the Doug hate. It’s refreshing to see these guests once in a while.

  • Antony Pols

    November 6, 2015 at 5:46 am

Wow. There’s voicing your opinion and then there’s being kind of a douche. Your opinion is just that, yours. You can find him obnoxious, but that doesn’t make Doug obnoxious. I personally liked this episode and the fact that Doug knew this game well. The conversation was on topic and didn’t feel forced to me. He also seemed more comfortable this time around. I for one am hoping we’ll see more sporadic guest appearances in the future. Be they internal Cinemassacre guests or someone from outside.

  • Glorious Gerbil

    November 6, 2015 at 8:21 am

Doug should really have some valium or similar before doing these videos. The man needs to calm the fuck down!

  • November 6, 2015 at 9:47 am

Am I the only one who likes Doug’s commentary?

  • Xen11

    November 6, 2015 at 11:08 am

I played the Genesis Batman Returns and damn that game is really moody and atmospheric. I love that about the Genesis. When I only had the Genesis (and not the SNES) when growing up, I envied everyone else that had the SNES because I thought pretty much every game was better. But now, I prefer the Genesis with its synthetic ’80s dark grit that is better now to me than it was then. And now the SNES seems not as great for some reason.

  • Randall Johnson

    November 6, 2015 at 1:02 pm

Fun game: Click on random locations on the progress bar and see how many times you can click before Doug isn’t making a noise. I actually got to 17.

Can’t see what people are on about .. this was a great video and Doug and James are fine together.

  • Imaginos

    November 6, 2015 at 6:22 pm

Doug was great, I really loved his comments. Such a cool guy. And the game is fantastic, so atmospheric and beautiful, one of my all time favourites.

  • November 6, 2015 at 6:43 pm

So funny watching these guys interact, they are like polar opposite styles of communication. Like Doug is just continuously manic and James just talks when you let him, basically.

  • bith the black

    November 6, 2015 at 9:54 pm

Great video. Love it when James and Doug get together to do these.

  • November 6, 2015 at 10:16 pm

Not sure why everyone is ragging on Doug, he just seems to be more familiar with the game. Maybe I’m wrong but James has always seemed to be the more quiet type. I like Doug AND I like Mike. More importantly, James, what is your tattoo? Want to see!

  • Rennie Page

    November 7, 2015 at 12:32 am

Doug is awesome. I love videos with both James AND Doug in them. 2 of the best internet stars in the world. Doug is amazing with his movie reviews and has a way with words much like James on video games and Monster Madness. These 2 guys are the only 2 people I watch on the Internet and am one of your guys’ biggest fans. Awesome vid!

  • November 7, 2015 at 12:43 am

    Loved it πŸ™‚

      November 8, 2015 at 1:11 pm

James has actually been in Doug’s studio and filmed some stuff for James and Mike Monday’s. So… To answer your question… Yes, he has.

  • Lastor

    November 8, 2015 at 11:12 am

You know, I don’t even care if this is not one of the better commentaries, I just love seeing you play one of the few games I know too. Especially as Batman Returns is practically inseparable from November for me.
Also, I gather that people here aren’t exactly fans of Doug’s, but I enjoy his contribution. Mike’s great, but they bring such different characters into the videos, I welcome a change.

  • November 8, 2015 at 10:22 pm

    cool

  • November 8, 2015 at 10:34 pm

this does look like a game that aged well. Very well made.

  • November 9, 2015 at 2:36 am

I love when Doug drops buy. A talkative, fun goofball playing games. Reminds me of some of my friends.

  • November 17, 2015 at 7:39 pm

Nostalgia Critic ruins this video. I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but he brings nothing to these let’s play style videos but annoying ‘humour’ and awkwardness.

  • RomanKnights

    November 30, 2015 at 12:48 am

I remembered this game. The trick to beating the Penguin was to crouch and stay low to avoid him when he was moving, and try to stay on the opposite side of him (giving you some space in case you need to jump to avoid the umbrellas. Also, when he charges at you, crouch and attack, you won’t have to hit him so many times in order to get him to miss you.

  • Ben_from_G-town

    September 22, 2016 at 7:22 am

Cool game! I’m not sure playing on Mania was a good idea! I don’t know why Penguin had the clown minions either, haha.
