I disagree. You gave an example of how his old ones were good by referencing the swordquest episode. You didn’t explain why you don’t like the new episodes.
September 8, 2015 at 8:51 pm
Anyone who has watched every single episode multiple times as I have will understand.
September 9, 2015 at 11:34 pm
@Weldin, you disagree that James is capable of creating things better than James & Mike Mondays? You think J&MMs reflect James’s talent? Well, to me, J&MMs are actually an insult to someone as creative and talented as James. And these Bootsy videos are just lame. So much for the name “Cinemassacre.” This really isn’t a film site anymore, and that’s sad.
September 10, 2015 at 1:36 am
@HighWing. Calm your tits. Monster Madness is just around the corner! Good job Bootsy.
September 12, 2015 at 5:01 pm
i agree 100%. these videos arent anything special, but to people who have a deep respect for james and cinemassacre its all enjoyable to watch because of the admiration we have towards this site. it has gone downhill after the movie but is still going. i again, agree that if james were to take a break for a while..im talking probably about a year. he would refresh his mind and be able to come back and make more interesting and unique episodes. but then there would be people who are pissed that hes not making episodes. so, there is no pleasing everyone and i think his best option to keep the site alive is to continue doing what he is doing and the only chance he has is to figure out a way to enjoy the process again. i guarantee making the AGVN’s is getting monotonous for him and without stopping and taking a break for A LONG LONG TIME, he wont find it enjoyable until he figures out a way to do so. which wont be easy, do you have any suggestions?
to reiterate, these videos aren’t good but i ENJOY THEM because i love this site. i don’t really understand why that is, but its true and i think many people would agree. so, i have no real problem with it.
September 13, 2015 at 3:18 am
The videos are Great and I enjoy them all.
September 13, 2015 at 11:26 am
Sad, but true. The newer content is not what it used to be. I sometimes feel like it went downhill when he bought his new HD camera. All respect to James and his friends who all contributed in some way. But you can not deny the change. The old clips used to make me laugh from start to finish and showed oldschool games that gave us nostalgic feelings. These days I seldom laugh at at james trying to (over)act what he thinks is what made the Nerd. And the topics/games that are chosen are too new, just betas or other crap that was trown onto the market. Its not unique, it doesn’t give a nostalgic feeling and it doesn’t take the ‘Nerd’ to show us what’s so crap about them. That said… the best thing James made lately was the movie.
September 13, 2015 at 11:29 am
Let me add one more thing… James… please stay away from PC stuff… shitty PC stuff is released dayly. Don’t listen to kids, listen to your heart here the Nerd came from.
September 13, 2015 at 6:34 pm
Yeah, I’d really like to see James go back to plain old “shitty games” rather than all these weird games. Those still make for funny videos, but I think he should have a mix of both. He tries too hard to find these really strange, really poorly designed games when he could be making more videos in the style of his old ones. I’ve always thought his 2008 and 2009 reviews were the best, and partly 2007 too. I wish he would go back to that style. I’d honestly never get sick of it. After all, I still re-watch his old videos all the time and still laugh at them. So why not make more like those?
September 13, 2015 at 6:35 pm
I also agree about the PC games. Big Rigs was good, but I wouldn’t like to see too many other PC games. I was kind of disappointed to see him playing Hong Kong 97 on an emulator. I understand the game is almost impossible to find as a cartridge, but emulators just don’t seem proper for the Nerd, so maybe he should’ve avoided the game altogether.
September 8, 2015 at 8:44 pm
Been waiting for this!
September 8, 2015 at 9:54 pm
You’re entitled to your opinion, I guess? But I like the content they put out just fine. My only complaint is that there needs to be more AVGNs.
September 8, 2015 at 9:56 pm
Loved the Bob Ross reference! You rock Bootsy!
September 8, 2015 at 10:00 pm
Dude, agreed times infinity. Ever since the movie AVGN < good. Come on though bro, maybe Bootsy can save the day? He IS genuinely interesting as a gamer. I dunno, call me an optimist, but something good will once again come from this site, it sure as shit isn't live game streaming though.
September 8, 2015 at 10:08 pm
I know what you’re saying. I completely understand. I also agree with you. James has a real talent for creating scripted content. His “simple” episodes are fun and funny to watch and his “extravagant” episodes are incredible short films. Both kinds of episodes are fun to watch again and again and again.
That said, I understand what happened to him. He suffered from extraordinary stress and major burnout from making all of these amazing episodes; releasing 2 per month. His physical and mental health was suffering, his relationship was suffering…he had to make a change because the pressure he was putting himself under was taking it’s toll.
Now that he’s healthy and happy again, things have changed at home and now he doesn’t have as much time as he used to to dedicate to his craft. He has a daughter to raise now.
All that said and done, however, I agree with you. I do NOT want to see James fall into the trap that many, many others have fallen into. I do NOT want to see the primary content of the site to be the same crap that everyone else makes; a couple guys bullshitting on a couch playing video games. I understand why it’s so appealing…it takes nowhere near the same amount of effort as one of James’ scripted videos and it’s easy to spend a weekend doing a marathon session and then uploading them once a week until it’s time to make more. I just keep hoping that James has a plan in his back pocket for when he has more time to dedicate to his craft because it’s such horrible waste of talent on EVERYONE’S part at Cinemassacre to make J&MM the “headliner” of the site.
Look, I have nothing but unconditional love for everyone that’s part of the Cinemassacre family. You all have given us YEARS of quality entertainment for the low low price of NOTHING. You’ve gotten me and I’m sure many others through some really, really tough times in our lives where the laughter you gave us has kept us from making some really, really stupid and permanent decisions to temporary problems.
And so when I say I have nothing but unconditional love for you guys, I mean unconditional love…no matter what the site’s format and future is and no matter how I feel about the content that’s being created.
September 11, 2015 at 6:11 am
Exactly this, I really could not have said it better myself. I also have been going trough a rough patch in my life. Things are looking up, and I can really say that the cinemassacre family has a great part in this. I have been with you guys from the early 2000’s, and I’m not planning to go anywhere, unless you guys decide to pull the plug on the whole thing 🙂
Al jokes aside tough, I feel like I know you better than most people in my life. Hell, this might just be true actually! I just want to express my thanks, appreciation and love for you guys!
Keep it up, I know that you guys are worth it!
PS: Bootsy you’re awesome!!!
September 8, 2015 at 10:18 pm
Great vid Bootsy! Keep ’em coming!
September 8, 2015 at 10:56 pm
The Cinemassacre team is doing a great job of making diverse content with different target audiences. Bootsy Beats isn’t meant to display James’ cinematic genius; it’s for old school gamers who want to learn to beat hard games from the NES era. J&MM, the live streams, etc. are just easy-to-make videos that fill in the gaps between the good videos.
As far as James’ creative genius goes, he simply isn’t capable of bringing it out once a month, every month for the rest of his life. I don’t think that it’s even possible for anybody to do WITHOUT all the of life’s little interventions. He does his best and for that, I am eternally grateful.
But before you say that his videos aren’t as good as they used to be, I would take a look at Board James because that’s where his talent is being spent right now. The AVGN series may just be simple episodes right now, but it isn’t the only thing he truly puts his heart and soul into. And I know then when he will have the inspiration and time to create another one of his AVGN masterpieces, it’s gonna be epic! Until then, I’ll gladly settle for the filler.
September 9, 2015 at 12:34 am
So you liked something from James, and now you expect every single thing from him to be exactly the same. I suppose he could do that – just keep making every video an exact copy of Swordquest, with just a few words changed around. Would you enjoy that? The fact is, James *just* made a good episode of Board James, and many people are enjoying Bootsy Beats. If you don’t like the streaming, well you can skip it. Not every video is going to appeal to everyone. But if you’re stuck in the past, thinking every video is going to be as great as what you think is a “masterpiece” then you will be disappointed about everything. Every TV show, movie franchise, video game, or anything really is inevitable to change. If you hate the change then find something else?
September 9, 2015 at 12:45 am
Hey MHSEVEN, how about if you don’t like the new AVGN, then don’t watch it.
This page isn’t even for AVGN. This is Bootsy Beats. And it’s awesome.
September 9, 2015 at 1:46 am
You’re so hardcore Bootsy, I admire you
September 9, 2015 at 2:20 am
Bootsy’s delivery is so damn straight but the tone and cadence is strange. It’s really unique and I like it!
Contrary to other opinions, I love Mike’s videos, J&MM, Bootsy Beats and all the other smaller series. It fills the time between films and I see it as a ‘behind the scenes’ style video more than a feature.
September 9, 2015 at 2:28 am
Bootsy!!! Or should I say Brendan? Brandon? One of the two, anyway You are funny as fuck. Seriously. “I don’t care, and neither should you. Focus on the game” hahahahahahaha. You’re classic!
September 9, 2015 at 3:31 am
I really want to know whats ups with the rubber duck… its been an inside joke in Hitman games also, but I never understood the meaning.
I always thought the time limit in TMNT was for the bombs, not the oxygen.
September 9, 2015 at 5:17 am
September 9, 2015 at 9:21 am
i suggest releasing bootsy’s episodes much closer together. it will be more helpful for the people actually using them to play through the game. love this series btw.
September 9, 2015 at 11:25 am
I disagree with you, and I’ve been watching for about ten years now. His episodes are certainly different now than they used to be, they seem to be a bit more informative now rather than the poop jokes and the fun special effects, but I like the new format. I’m not saying it would be bad to see more crazy stuff like the Rob the Robot episode, but even if those days are gone, I’d be satisfied with what we’re getting. It’s in no way bad, and I personally think that the passion is still there. There’s not a whole lot holding him to doing AVGN (other than income maybe), so I’m sure if he wanted to stop, he would.
September 9, 2015 at 11:28 am
I agree. However Bootsy Beats is a brilliant edition to the site & I endorse it massively!
I made a post about this on the AVGN facebook page awhile back and it got over 100 likes. We’re not the only ones who think this. I’ve noticed that people are starting to see the decline in quality. For me personally there is far too much content with other people. Most people want to see James create awesome content by himself. The content seems to be getting more generic and seeing the Live Stream thing shows to me how lazy they are getting with ideas.
I think Mike has a bigger influence on Cinemassacre nowa days and I don’t believe that that’s necessarily a good thing. I’d personally like to see James reign it in a bit and start making videos by himself.
AVGN has been stale for a considerable amount of time now & I also worry for James in the sense that if he makes Cinemassacre too generic and involve Mike, Ryan etc.. in all of his videos. The hardcore will begin to leave. I used to check this site out every day, now I check once a week to see if James has put anything new up and nope it’s just J&MM’s.
The sooner James realizes that we mainly tune in to watch him & not the other guys so much, then we may seem some good content.

September 9, 2015 at 12:24 pm
It’s my professional opinion that you are an idiot.
September 9, 2015 at 12:43 pm
You probably heard it like a 1000 times, but here’s nr 1001.
Can you beat silver surfer?
Keep up the good work.
September 10, 2015 at 6:13 pm
Well, apparently, he CAN beat Silver Surfer, as shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNMVgAAdrt8
September 11, 2015 at 4:39 pm
Thnx!! For some reason I missed this one.
Damn! That was impressive, to say the least.
I bet that he sees like Neo when he plays, all in slo-mo.
September 14, 2015 at 4:28 pm
Yeah, Bootsy goes bullet time and sees everything in code when he plays these old games. Ha ha
September 9, 2015 at 2:11 pm
Great work Bootsy! I think you found the balance between a clear guide and a bit of dry humor in there. I really like the presentation, it’s not over the top and it gets the message across better for that. I’m a big fan of NES Ninja Gaiden 1-2 also ( I’ve beaten 3 also but it’s awful) and I appreciate the effort of mastering a hard game like this.
I hope we get the next one soon, cya!
September 9, 2015 at 3:01 pm
This particular tutorial felt more like Bootsy was just going through the levels rather than providing tips and techniques to clear the levels.
These levels are much more difficult than the previous levels of the game, and you’ll probably have to die over and over and over just to memorize and understand the levels. The boss on level 8 really is much more difficult than Bootsy made him appear, and if that boss hits you with just one shot you’ll be killed… you are less likely to get stomped on if you are all the way to the left side near the wall. I’m not sure if using an emulator makes level 10 more difficult because of the timing, but the third rat is extremely difficult to outrun… and to clear the section you’ll probably have to hit him back several times, which is incredibly difficult to do.
September 9, 2015 at 3:46 pm
*Did anybody that is complaining consider James and Mike are almost for sure working on “Monster Madness” and consider that MM is a video every day for all of October? We can assume this is what is going on. Also this site doesn’t charge you any money, unless you want to buy a shirt or dvd, so give the guy a break. Cinemassacre has been strong for over 10 years straight. Thats pretty impressive!*
September 9, 2015 at 6:50 pm
If Monster Madness (by far one of my absolute FAVORITES on this or any other site for that matter) is anything like it has been in the past, James started working on it way way back in April. It’s a hell of a tall order to watch, summarize, and critique 31 horror movies. And that’s just the writing. Now add in all of the editing and voice over work. Hundreds of hours of work…and there’s been 8 iterations of Monster Madness.
I fucking love October.
September 9, 2015 at 5:27 pm
You are expecting too much of them… While obviously not all their content is creative genius, which is not the goal, they still produce good content. Board James has been so good lately.. The Urkel episode was hilarious! Though not every AVGN episode has been a laugh riot like some of the old ones, what can you expect? The show has been running for like 10 years. As someone who has been watching James’s stuff from the beginning, I have to disagree with your assessment.
September 9, 2015 at 6:51 pm
More Bootsy Please. You are my new fav person. This site just keeps getting better and better you guys add only quality content everything you guys do is super interesting. Bootsy has mad skillz
September 10, 2015 at 12:01 am
You would seriously like absolutely anything this site posts.
September 9, 2015 at 7:42 pm
Dude has a wife, kid, friends, and other interests. Sure, we don’t really see most of those things often, because they’re personal. As a viewer, it’s easy to forget that those things exist, but they very much do. One cannot live and breathe content creation forever. A lot of work goes into an AVGN episode. He still makes them, but they have to be balanced with the rest of his life as it is now — not as it was back then. He’s discussed this before, actually.
Really? Swordquest is the episode that resonates with you the most? I mean, it’s a decent one, but it doesn’t even crack my top 20. The entertainment value of any given thing is pretty subjective. So, to answer your initial question: No, we can’t all agree.
If you want to see a content creator who has REALLY fallen off the wagon, go check out Spoony. He went from making incredibly entertaining and well produced videos to making 2 hour rambling, uncut vlogs about professional wrestling.
Be happy it hasn’t come to THAT.
September 9, 2015 at 8:41 pm
Most successful people are just beginning to enter their prime at his age. And yes most of them are married, have kids and plenty of friends. These are not reasons but excuses you have presented. Look I’m his biggest fan and think the last few years he has been on cruise control. Those things you mentioned should in no way prevent him from excelling in his profession.
September 9, 2015 at 8:46 pm
why after making hundreds of videos and a movie should the quality of his projects decline? Because he has a family? He should be pumping out his best material with the years of experience. We know he is capable. So what you are saying is that when we decide to have a family our career should suffer? That’s insane.
September 9, 2015 at 11:39 pm
I agree wholeheartedly with you, MHSEVEN.
September 9, 2015 at 9:21 pm
I agree that James & Mike playing doesn’t show what James is really capable of. However I realize its purpose. You do realize that they can probably film 20 or 30 of those in a day and hand off the editing to Mike or one of their other helpers (I assume they have more these days). This gives the site content for the month while James is working on other things. For example, this season of Board James which has had similar production value to the better AVGN episodes. He is probably also gearing up for Monster Madness as we speak or has already started on that. In addition to having a young kid to take care of. I’ve got twins right now and I can tell you that you do not have much time in the day for anything else. His quality content has slowed down but it’s still trickling out.
September 9, 2015 at 11:17 pm
i think bootsy beats is one of the best things done in a minute….plus that guy in the comments is such a dick because that new board james on TGIF was AMAZING
September 10, 2015 at 1:18 am
I love bootsy beats but the time between each episode seems to be waaaay to long! I would love to see more guides for other difficult games.
September 10, 2015 at 8:25 am
@HighWing Nice troll impression, but your opinion is just like everyone’s: personal to you and mostly irrelevant to anyone else. Sorry to damage your ego, but the Cinemassacre team isn’t going to remake their site just because you don’t like it. So sad…
September 10, 2015 at 8:55 am
@MHSEVEN I’ve watched every episode of AVGN multiple times as well, and no, I don’t think it’s given me any deeper understanding of James. Call me crazy, but that sounds…crazy.
September 10, 2015 at 12:10 pm
You can complain about the content of Cinemassacre the day you’re paying to use it. Until then, they can provide whatever entertainment content they want. They are NOT here to serve you. If you don’t like the content, you don’t have to visit.
September 10, 2015 at 3:46 pm
Good stuff bootsy, I love the awkward delivery and strange pauses in the videos, gives it a unique feel. I am still on my quest to beat this damn game on Rare Replay so i’ll be firing that up today and giving it a shot.
September 10, 2015 at 4:27 pm
It’s so weird how you just acknowledged the shittiness of these videos, and yet you still enjoy them. When people start saying shittiness is “unique,” I think that’s a good sign we need some better content on here.
September 10, 2015 at 5:05 pm
That was so relaxing. Thanks, man.
September 11, 2015 at 12:18 am
Perfect coaching. Keep up the good work Bootsy.
September 11, 2015 at 4:24 am
@HighWing. Go share your pointless opinions with your mom.
September 11, 2015 at 1:16 pm
I believe highwing is expressing his/her opinion in a non-YouTube childish way.
September 11, 2015 at 5:06 am
I think you’re being very unfair here. It is not uncommon for channels, when they go big, to stop working hard on quality videos and simply profit of their big audience to make money. But unlike many of those channels, Cinemassacre has always kept making quality videos. Yeah they’ve expended and make other things (which plenty of people like, mind you), but they still work very well crafted AVGN episodes. There was a break for the AVGN movie but that’s it. So maybe the newer material isn’t to your taste, that’s possible, but please don’t call it “lazy” or “needs to stop”, why don’t you work on videos of a type that you think is amazing if you long so much to have them ? Please make some and maybe we will come to your channel and maybe complain on how uninspired it is and needs to stop.
September 11, 2015 at 10:36 am
Next month is october. Monster madness is coming. It’s the most wonderful time of the year.
September 11, 2015 at 12:17 pm
The James & Mike Mondays etc. are to give fans content while waiting for the next AVGN/Board James etc. Would you rather just have nothing for two months? You’ll probably say yes, and if that’s the case, there’s just no pleasing some people…
September 11, 2015 at 3:12 pm
I’m just hoping that James has another film in the works. I’m not expecting something as extravagant as the AVGN movie, that would be insane. Just a small independent horror/thriller film, like Legend of the Blue Hole.
September 12, 2015 at 7:21 am
That’s true. Get back to his roots. I always believed James would became a ‘stable’ movie director after the run of avgn and stuff. I still enjoy avgn though, just saying.
September 11, 2015 at 8:05 pm
Nice part 3! Great job Bootsy, looking forward to more videos\games
September 12, 2015 at 7:57 pm
AVGN Seaman was the best one to date…
How much crack have you smoked today?
September 12, 2015 at 10:57 pm
Ya… well he probably hardly makes money off Angry Video Game Nerd episodes in comparison. He may be coasting off his earlier success for a while — but I think that’s only possible because of the effort he put into AVGN. If he focussed on quality over quantity he may increase his fan base even more but the fan base doesn’t generate much revenue without quantity-type productions at some point. I guess he decided that now is the time to cash in. He may focus on AVGN again if video views dwindle significantly?
September 13, 2015 at 9:18 am
I’ve watched every single episode multiple times, and I disagree. He would always do some epic AVGN episodes along with uninspired ones. There was Swordquest, but there was Hydlide as well.
I think his Board James episodes are pretty cool (I bet he enjoys making those more than the AVGN ones) and now we don’t get as many AVGN as before, but come on, the last one, the Seaman one was superb. Yes, they have more “let’s play” kind of videos, but they’re still making interesting stuff in between, at least IMO.
September 13, 2015 at 10:33 am
Loved the videos, I hope to see more!!
September 26, 2015 at 3:19 am
Man Bootsy is a great gamer. He should’ve entered the World Championships for Nintendo or Super Nintendo.
September 28, 2015 at 4:04 am
Running out of air is about the only thing you don’t have to worry about on that level… I love your questions about the game’s logic. Great videos, sir. Thank you!
September 29, 2015 at 2:38 pm
Level 3 During the final sequence when the walls really start flying by at a ridiculous pace, intentionally ram into the 10th wall (it’s one of the ones on the bottom) and you’ll warp directly from Level 3 to Level 5.
October 12, 2015 at 1:31 pm
Here’s to hoping Bootsy’s continues this. I was having a pretty good time watching him beat a game I could never do fairly 😛
November 13, 2015 at 12:19 pm
Why is your account picture a penis?? xD
November 24, 2015 at 8:13 pm
C’mon Bootsy it’s about time to finish what you started. We need closure. 🙂
