AVGN: Seaman for Dreamcast

Mike Matei / July 28th, 2015

Episode 136. It’s time to release seaman! This is one of the strangest games ever made. It’s the Angry Video Game Nerd’s first full episode covering a Sega Dreamcast game, although Sonic Shuffle was briefly discussed in episode 116: Wish List Part 1.

      DOING IT FOR NIMOY! πŸ™‚
This episode is so funny. I like that the Nerd’s life is complete now that he’s seen the word “fuck” in a Nintendo game. I also like that it’s a longer episode with an actual storyline, in keeping with the classic episodes. Can’t say enough good things about it. AVGN is the best!

    July 28, 2015 at 11:47 pm

I really love how as The Nerd has grown, so has the character. Initially I enjoyed the rage of the character and identified with it, now The Nerd is just trying to figure out what he’s doing; looking for a deeper meaning and doing more than just spit out strings of obscenities.

Sega wanting information about its players?
    How awful!
You’ll never see Nintendo doing that, nope, not through online features of some obscure portable RPG. πŸ˜‰

  • Wayne

    July 29, 2015 at 12:26 am

“Seaman II: Quest for the Pearl Necklace” on the new Sega Uranus game system.

On the Internet Wayback Machine, it shows the history for the domain mentioned in the booklet…

Around when the game was out, it was just for a page for the Sega Swirl game for Dreamcast and PC.

Later on, the domain redirected to Yoot… this was titled “Expeditions into Myth: In Search of Seaman”, which was for the game and presented the information kind of like a journal would.

And later on, as James mentioned, it did go to adult content, but it didn’t look like the developer ever finished creating whatever was in mind.

The last thing the domain pointed to was some sort of used car information in Japanese.

    • July 29, 2015 at 12:52 am

Holy shit, the domain is free. I bet it’s gonna be registered after this video.

      • Wayne

        July 29, 2015 at 1:40 am

James should get that domain and have it redirect to something ridiculous like a picture of Shit Pickle or a parody commercial for this game.

The “seaman” domain (not the correct one, “meetseaman”) used to be owed by a graphic designer, and she ended up having to put a notice on her website (“Looking for Sega’s Seaman”) because of this stupid game.

    July 29, 2015 at 12:28 am

I must admit- I wasn’t expecting much out of this episode. But as it progressed, it became better as it went. I love how in the beginning, the Nerd says, “I’m not going there”. πŸ™‚ I also like the fact that the nerd discovers that consoles now can keep time. Hey Nerd, wake up, it’s 2015! Things have progressed since you were a kid!

And that ending… it reflected the overall weirdness of the game, itself. This was a thoroughly enjoyable episode. Loved it!

  • July 29, 2015 at 12:54 am

I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t have Dreamcast as a kid. I could’ve had brain damage playing this haha.
I played Creatures 3 on PC which is a pretty cool life simulator game.

  • July 29, 2015 at 12:57 am

Hey James, I gotta ask: Did it really say all the things in the video? Did it really directly respond to the things you said in that way? That is creepy.

  • Rennie Page

    July 29, 2015 at 1:12 am

    Fucking awesome James.

  • bulbasaur15

    July 29, 2015 at 1:49 am

#001 So is this why the games from Sega have been coinciding with today’s consoles? (Sonic games featured on Nintendo, Playstation, XBOX for example) I think we need to keep an eye out for Sega. They plotting something.

  • Tross

    July 29, 2015 at 1:58 am

Did the game really respond so appropriately to what you said into the mic? Who knew a game from the Dreamcast could be so spot on, and so philosophical while it’s at it. I think a modern dev would be hard pressed to create something like that for modern systems.

    • July 29, 2015 at 8:10 am

Yeah it’s creepy. It’s hard to remember exactly what I said while initially recording the game, because when you talk to the game, your voice isn’t recorded, and the conversations would go too fast for me to take notes of every little thing. The first part where I am conversing back and forth with Seaman, is pretty accurate. That’s pretty much how the conversation would go when Seaman is in a bad mood. Toward the end, I was picking out some of Seaman’s quotes so they would fit the plot. Ordinarily to get him to say “Hail Sega” you have to say Dreamcast or Sega to him. And only when he’s in the Frog Man stage. I knew I needed that line, and it took me weeks to get it!

      • Tross

        August 1, 2015 at 1:28 am

This isn’t my genre of choice, but it seems like a pretty amazing game, and it probably would be regarded as a good or even a great game if the problem of being unable to get certain lines for an inordinate amount of time was fixed. Getting an ultra rare item drop in the most tedious of JRPGs doesn’t take weeks to get, and in that case it’s usually an optional side quest that the majority of players wisely abandon. Having to spend weeks just to achieve something necessary to advance the game is ridiculous regardless of the genre.

I’m not a Star Trek fan but it’s not hard to notice you reference Mr. Spock a lot. =) All I can say is that was an amazing episode! Can’t wait for the Niconico comments.

Funniest AVGN episode in quite some time.
Makes me wonder where this falls in the list of the most time consuming AVGN episodes to make.

    • July 29, 2015 at 8:01 am

It’s pretty high up there, mostly because of all the hours spent playing the game. I even fucked up once and Seaman died, so I actually had to start the game all over from the beginning.

  • Fred . Fuchs

    July 29, 2015 at 6:37 am

Great episode! I don’t like much these conspiracy endings, but I liked the Famicom part and the psychiatrist-like part. Very hilarious.

  • bud

    July 29, 2015 at 6:38 am

This episode is a true return to form for the Nerd. The anger is back, the obscenity, the diatribes and conspiracy theories and plot twists and tying it all together in the end. WOW! One of the best AVGN episodes ever. I guess a game as weird as this inspires such a scenario. My hat’s off to you, James.

    July 29, 2015 at 6:45 am

Can anyone pls tell me what is the name of the song/music that starts at 8:55? AVGN also used it at the end of Alien 3, TGWTG used it in his “why do we nitpick” video. I scrolled through.. i cant even count that much youtube comments to find any kind of clue.. but nope..
    Pls Community, help me out

    • July 29, 2015 at 8:03 am

They’re all from royalty free libraries, meaning you buy a license and then you can use it forever in any of your videos. The specific one you mentioned must be the “it says fuuuuck” part which would be from Partners in Rhyme. Search their battlefield orchestra collection.

    • Ed Saxon

      July 29, 2015 at 12:51 pm

The problem sold itself, and this episode was absolutely hilarious. I thought the Sega commercial was: “Sega does what Nintendogshits”.

      • MrBrrumpkins

        July 29, 2015 at 4:19 pm

Try different browsers. I tether my throttled cell phone to my PC, so I haven’t watched videos on the site in a while. I go to a wifi spot and download them from youtube. If you replace ‘www.’ in the URL of a video with ‘ss’ and hit enter it will take you to a download page. You can get to 720p. Pretty cool. Just saying.

Would love to see James, Mike, Bootsy and Kyle sit on the coach and watch each others favorite Star Trek-episode. I know James and Mike love Star Trek but what about Bootsy and Kyle? Would be fun if they had no idea about Star Trek at all, their reactions to J&M’s ST-lingo~<3

I was thinking the same thing. For awhile he always destroyed the games, then for awhile he battled a character from the game, and now he’s been doing more of Super Mario Bros. 3 type stuff and reading way too much into it. Hilarious

I remember well playing this game when I got my Dreamcast. It actually impressed me at the time that I could talk to the game and it’d respond in somewhat of a conversational manner. Very weird but interesting game… I always loved how Seaman would talk shit to you depending on your answers. Like he’d make fun of you after asking how old you are and where you live in you were over a certain age and still living with your parents… stuff like that.

    • Deathbringer

      July 29, 2015 at 4:51 pm

Hey, here’s a few new ideas for episodes:

    1. Games related to the British TV show Thunderbirds
    2. Games related to Thomas the Tank Engine
    3. AVGN Adventures II ASSimilation (when it comes out)

    Hope you use these ideas
