Godzilla (PS4) James & Mike Mondays

Mike Matei / July 20th, 2015

Let’s Play Godzilla for PS4! This week we try out the new Godzilla game for PlayStation 4. Released 2014 in Japan 2015 in the US. Sadly, the game has no local co-op – it’s only online multiplayer =( We were disappointed by this, but we also tried out Destruction Mode and Kaiju mode which were decent.

Didn’t even know this game existed. BTW Mike, can you make “talk about games” regular on thursdays or something? It would be very cool to have another fixed appointment to wait for during the week.

No local 2 player “vs” mode is really weak. That mode would have made the game awesome.

Huge problem with games today. I can almost never find a game to play with my brothers. My only alternative is to buy two systems. Bullshit.

We’re getting old, guys. They don’t make games the way they used to. I pretty much agree with all of your complaints about games nowadays. It’s too overly complicated and convulted for casual playing. It almost takes all the fun out of it, ironically enough.

My main complaint with this game (solely from watching the video) is that Godzilla moves too slowly and cumbersome. The monsters have a lot more dexterity, which is why you kept getting your asses beat. Seems like it would be a lot more fun once you unlock the upgraded models.

On a related note, how was Comic Con? I’m surprised you don’t have a section here covering all the latest news. I’m sure it’s something your audience would be into (I ended up watching all of the available panels on YouTube).

The building with Godzilla’s head on it is “Toho Cinemas Shinjuku” which was built a few months and, and has a Godzilla head on the roof. The same building includes the Hotel Gracery, which has a special “Godzilla Room” you can stay in.

Well, games (not just video games) always had more complicated ones. I’m fine with it tbh, but I love the simpler ones too. From what I can remember, computer games usually had the bigger learning curves back then and consoles simpler (maybe because of the controllers?)

About the unlocking stuff, I looove unlocking stuff and it’s actually a thing less and less common! What happened to cheat codes anyway?? It’s like a forgotten thing, that would solve everyone’s problem.
Also, that tail thing was pretty lame. I hate nowaday games putting ‘realistic’ effects and eye candy but all the animated stuff is untouchable.
Like, things go through everything all the time and people got blind to those it seems. Absolutely hate it, makes me not believe in a game’s world when it happens.

      • nostalgiavhs

        July 21, 2015 at 2:33 am

Now instead of having in-game unlockables and cheat codes they make you pay extra for it as DLC. I heard the new Street Fighter is gonna have make their DLC unlockable in the game if you’d rather pay then play, so hopefully its just a trend.

Also, the fact you have to be a Playstation plus member to use any sort of multiplayer mode is, in the immortal words of AVGN, a shitload of fuck.

    • July 26, 2015 at 3:10 am

I think games are better then ever today, this game looks like absolute dogshit though, Jim Sterling absolutely crucified this game and Angry Joe has also raged at it plenty, he’s going to post a review tomorrow and I can’t wait to see him rip it to shreds.

It’s getting more and more of a challenge to find a more than decent couch coop games these days. For most games I don’t even want to be online if I don’t specifically choose to do something online.
Can’t you guys start a Cinemassacre Couch Coop Campaign, the C.C.C.C. I would sign any petition that demands more attention being spent on local coop instead of a last-miniute-cheap-obligatory-online-vs mode-that-should-have-been-a-simple-couch-coop-feature-because-“they”-think-thats-the-only-thing-gamers-care-about-nowadays-and-it-gets-us-more-money-because-we’re-also-forcing-you-to-have-PS Plus-or-Xb Gold-account.
Start it up and lets show them bigwig game company whippersnappers what vs games should be about!

Sorry…it’s never gonna happen. Just face it. We’re old. We aren’t the primary demographic anymore. Kids nowadays don’t have friends sitting on the couch with them, they play online…so these game companies cater to that audience. That, and it makes them more money by charging bullshit fees that these kids don’t even have to pay for anyway. They get mom and dad to pay for it.

On an unrelated note, I like how Mike is complaining about tutorial bullshit and James is complaining about how he doesn’t know what the fuck to do and can’t figure it out. At least they acknowledged their hypocrisy. πŸ˜›

It’s sad to think about where games and technology are headed, as we classic gamers continue to grow obsolete. In the future, kids will play all games on Snapchat. πŸ™

      • Ishi Prende

        July 20, 2015 at 3:29 pm

this comment is just as fucked as the modern game industry! But you’re right…kids these days don’t pay for their games and they don’t have friends to play with!

Do yourself a favor and head back into your cave!

      • ToadRoad

        July 20, 2015 at 8:01 pm

Where there are kids with video game systems there will always be kids without them who get to play the consoles only at a friend’s house. I guess they still can, but now they won’t be able to play together which is sad, and kind of stupid. “Wanna come to my house after school and play video games?” “No, I want to play TOGETHER, so I am going to leave and go home.” No wonder gamers are stereotyped as antisocial…they’re forced into it.

      • July 26, 2015 at 3:11 am

I was never a multiplayer guy due to not really having friends in school, so for me a game not having local co-op isn’t a downside. I don’t like how some games focus almost exclusively on multiplayer and almost completely ignore single-player(I.E. Titanfall).

      • BrandeX

        July 27, 2015 at 2:12 am

Local Co-Op gaming has pretty much moved from console (excluding some WiiU) to PC indie games.

  • July 20, 2015 at 6:33 am

James and Mike really need to do a Monday episode on playing through the Japanese version of Contra for the NES. It’s so much more polished with cut scenes (that get badass on the last couple of stages, cool animations, and a stage overview. It almost makes me feel pissed off at how much better it is than the stripped USA version.

    • July 20, 2015 at 9:41 am

It gets worse – the European version was retitled “Probotector” (sounds like a bad porn movie) and replaced the human characters with cyborgs, while the home computer releases were named “Gryzor” and were 1-player only.

Man, modern games just suck balls. Why bother buying a console?

    • Sam Hain

      July 20, 2015 at 1:26 pm

I agree. I finally just this past December (2014) bought a used x360 because there were finally enough games and cheap enough that I actually liked and wanted to own.

If I do not forsee wanting to play a game again in the future, and/or do not see even being able to (due to online support or content) then I do not want that game or game system.

  • July 20, 2015 at 9:04 am

People have probably already said this but have you guys ever heard of “War of the Monsters”? The VS Mode is basically 2 monsters running around town throwing cars, smashing buildings, impaling eachother with antennas and shit. Destroying, Wrecking, whatever. You guys should check it out. I think you’d love it.

  • mbtthew

    July 20, 2015 at 9:21 am

On PlayStation Plus at the moment they’ve have featured what I think might be one of the best couch coop games to come out for a while – Rocket League. Highly recommended for a J&MM with Bootsy, Kyle or Ryan!

    July 20, 2015 at 9:54 am

It is a shame that in 2015 with Blue Ray and stuff they couldn’t make the game with a realistic collision detection/physics. This was acceptable in the PS2 but not anymore.

  • Alex Row

    July 20, 2015 at 10:47 am

This game looks awful. No local multiplayer mode is truly baffling. There’s really nothing on current gen, besides maybe CupHead, that would entice me to buy either a ps4 or xb1. It all seems to be mostly remasters of previous gen games, and grim and gritty military shooters which I’ve never really been into.

  • PsychoNerd

    July 20, 2015 at 10:55 am

It’s kinda funny how angry they got at having to restart after losing since that’s a mechanic that’s much more prevalent in old-school games than it is in modern games.

I’m disappointed by the lack of local co-op/multiplayer in so many games recently. On the one hand I can kinda understand since it requires so much more processing power, especially if you’re doing split-screen, but I just can’t imagine that their isn’t a large enough demographic for it that would make it a viable option. Luckily, Nintendo and indie devs have been doing a pretty good job at picking up the slack though.

As far as the game goes, the general consensus seems to agree with you guys. It’s repetitive and generally just not very fun but they did a great job of faithfully adapting the style and monsters of the movies.

    • ToadRoad

      July 20, 2015 at 10:19 pm

but that’s WHY they got mad. Like “come on, it’s been 30 years since NES and you’re still sending us back when other games have evolved to be less annoying.”

  • Joker83

    July 20, 2015 at 10:58 am

  • bumbiqc

    July 20, 2015 at 11:49 am

This game look great? No! it looks horrible it might be worth a PSN digital only release at like 20$ but this loocked down right digusting, boring and with so little content. I mean buildings that will only explode when attacked enough? A 10 million tons monster can’t just walk through a building, it has to attack it, then it explodes… Water that only reacts to the body, not the 1 million ton tail? wow…

and I don’t know if you were playing characters or youselves (considering the title yourselves I guess) but how can you take like 5 minutes to understand that A) PsPlus is for online play B) that Playstation now requires you to pay for online.

Also, Its a frigin Boss Monster Waves game type it is for you to see how long you can last with harder and harder monsters thats the point!

Also, Updates are there to fix games there were no updates back then because the couldn’t update and they didn’t care if games were broken or unplayable hence the videogame crash (in part)

    • ToadRoad

      July 21, 2015 at 3:36 pm

Or they could just wait to release the game until it’s working properly. Would you accept disgusting food at a restaurant because the chef was still working out the recipe? Shoul car manufacturers

  • Sigma779

    July 20, 2015 at 11:56 am

Just a few tips about the ps4.

    1. If you leave it in rest mode, it puts it into a low power mode that will download updates as they come out. It won’t save you from updating a brand new game, but at least every game that you have will be updated when you turn it on.

    2. PS Plus is great. Yes, it’s required to play online, but if you have a ps3, vita, and a ps4, you get 6 free games each month as long as you keep the subscription.

Sadly this game just isn’t very good. If it was a 10-15 dollar download game, fine, but for 60 it’s a ripoff.

  • July 20, 2015 at 1:14 pm

The whole reason is to make more people buy the same game, thus gouging more sales. The internet is becoming more and more intrusive. It actually ruined film, books, and games.

  • SleeplessKnight

    July 20, 2015 at 2:31 pm

Can’t believe you guys are unaware about PS Plus. It started out on PS3 as a $50 /year subscription service which provided features such as auto cloud saves, auto Trophy syncing and more. It’s biggest attraction was *Free games every month. On PS3 it was more impressive because the game library was so vast by the time PS+ was introduced that we’d get a lot of AAA retail releases. Fast forward to PS4 and it’s not as impressive because (a) you HAVE TO be subscribed to it to play online multiplayer like Xbox Live) and (b) The selection of *Free games is very limited and mostly Indie games as the PS4 hasn’t been out long enough to amass a huge library yet. However if you do own all 3 systems (PS3, PS4 and Vita) it’s a pretty good deal as you get 2 *Free games per month per system. And since some are “Cross-Buy” and playable across PS systems you end up getting more like 8, 10 or 12 games in a sense because you can download and play some of them on more than one system.

That being said, it’s sad that couch co-op is going the way of the dodo πŸ™

*Free if you stay subscribed otherwise games lock and you can’t play them anymore.

    • SleeplessKnight

      July 20, 2015 at 2:56 pm

To add to the lack of couch co-op point, it’s sad because most of my favorite memories playing videogames as a kid on the NES, SNES, Genesis, N64 and GameCube (not PS1 or PS2 cause it was stupid to have to purchase a multitap adapter – Why didn’t they put 4 ports on the consoles?) were while I was playing local, couch co-op/splitscreen games with my friends. Now we’re all in our mid-late 30’s and we’ve had this discussion and how we’re all pissed off that seemingly 90% of today’s games don’t have local multiplayer. I guess people don’t socialize face-to-face anymore. Today’s generation would rather text their friends than phone them and hide behind a screen over the Internet rather than visit them in person. Also it increases sales if BOTH people have to buy a game to play together…Can I go back to 1994 now please?

  • Wayne

    July 20, 2015 at 2:46 pm

The graphics look ok, but everything (outside of the black & white sections of the game) looks so gray. The gameplay looks way too repetitive. The way the monsters go through each other and objects (like Godzilla’s head and tail) is horrible. Some of the attack moves do not look smooth.

It should be much clearer what the verses modes are. It was very lazy programming to exclude playing with 2 players on the same system (in the same room instead of playing someone online).

It seems like they really needed to work on the game design a lot more but just released it because they had to meet a release date. The game looks very disappointing and definitely seems forgettable.

    • July 20, 2015 at 4:52 pm

Well, I think that’s why it’s so disappointing.
Both of them, especially James, should be incredibly excited for this game. It’s just not a very exciting game.

Alternate episode title: James and Mike discover how shitty the gaming industry has become.

James’ reaction, which I suppose was genuine, really said it all. “this can’t be right, maybe we’re just missing something, they didn’t really make a game where you can’t play multiplayer without a paid subscription and two separate consoles”

If you can find it you guys should play ‘War of the monsters’ for the PS2. it’s basically a 3d beat-em-up based on kaiju and 50’s b-movie monsters. It’s was one of my all time favourite games as a kid but I never really knew anyone else who had played it.

you should check it out, you seemed to like Godzilla: unleashed when you played that on J&MM and AVGN but war of the monsters beats it by a mile, absolutely the best Giant monster games I ever played.

Seriously, check it out you’d love it, one of the monsters you could pick was basically just Godzilla with a different name

Even though I’ve been disappointed that the Wii U won’t have a longer life, I am really happy I bought the system specifically because of its ability to deliver a good living room experience. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy online games (especially when games have a novel twist on the online component, like in Dark Souls), but it’s just different gaming on a couch with friends. Echoing the sentiment James shared, it’s too bad that “vs.” in modern games means “vs. someone else that also owns this game that is a random person online rather than your buddy sitting right next to you.”

Furthermore, what a CF of a UX. Instead of “vs.” it should be called “online” to more accurately set expectations and convey what that mode actually entails.

  • Tross

    July 21, 2015 at 1:53 am

I think the problem with games nowadays isn’t technology, but common sense. Graphics should not be more important than gameplay, and you’d have to live on another planet to understand the mindset that games should not allow local multiplayer. Couple that with physical games not coming with instruction manuals, and insane hand holding, and nothing makes sense anymore. I can see why retro gaming is increasingly popular.

What a fucking shame. This is the reason I havnt bought a ps4. PS3 is as new as I have and that’s really only bcuz of the NHL games and mortal kombat, gta, and resident evils(which have been terrible). What a fucking shame this game is. It makes the NES version look like KING. In all actuality it’s a pretty fun and addictive game that I played for hours and hours as a 6 year old. James and Mike, let’s just stick to what we know best, ATARI NES SNES MASTER SYSTEM GENESIS N64 GAMECUBE DREAMCAST PS1 PS2. • July 21, 2015 at 7:31 am

I’ve noticed that too. How modern games today less and less have local coop. It’s sad because I grew up on local coop. The alternative to play local should always be there. Has playing a game next to a person gone out of favor? What the heck is going on?

  • July 21, 2015 at 7:35 am

This game really doesn’t look great though. Yes in terms of the older Godilla games. Sure, but in terms of other modern games. It looks pretty bad. The monsters are pretty well done, but the environment lacks detail and everything looks overly simplistic. It has an outdated look to it. It’s like this could have come out on PS3.

  • July 21, 2015 at 7:52 am

At 21:05 your voice gets out of sync James. Is that a tribute to the dubbed Godilla movies in America? lol

HAhahahahaha Why would they give us a Game where you can play with like, 4 friends in a single console? Screw your ass and get your OWn console!!! • MadHitz

Why would they not include a 2-player local Vs. mode? You would think that would be the easiest thing to include in the game…

  • July 21, 2015 at 7:09 pm

I think complaining about the menus is a little over the top. “shit on top of shit”… come on. Games have menus.
“Too many text boxes?” these are some really lame complaints. I’m not saying its a great game, but are J&M really so old fashioned that these things ruin the game? Which is hypocritical considering they have called some games lik FF4 that have lots of text great games.

    • Rennie Page

      July 23, 2015 at 4:29 am

This guy above me has got to be 18 years old or something like that. When you play an rpg like ff4 you expect text boxes it’s part of the gameplay. You don’t expect stupid annoying txt boxes in the middle of the gameplay during a battle with Godzilla. James, Mike, were about the same age and I couldn’t agree with you more. Fuck new age gaming.

Get used to it guys, local multiplayer is becoming more and more a thing of the past, it’s nearly all online bullshit now which is stupid cos sometimes they shut a server down on a game so then you can no longer even play it online. As for the tutorials, yep this is what a lot of games are like now, too much ‘hand-holding’ instead of just letting you play the game, this is what puts me right off RPGs nowadays, a genre which used to be my fave but i always know there’ll be about an hour tutorial so i don’t bother lol

Why oh why don’t you have Playstation Plus membership??? It’s only about 50 bucks a year and you get tons of free stuff! Some of the greatest games I’ve played have been free games from PSN.

The game industry is not “shitty” at all right now just because they made a shitty Godzilla game, the industry is pretty good still.

It is amazing how clueless and unaware you both are of how online play works these days. It is fairly common knowledge by now that you have to pay to play online with the new consoles.
