Awesome video and Jontron!. Also, on random note, Super Double Dragon for J&MM!

Revenge of the Sith is my favorite of all six.

I really miss the old rental stores, it’s such a shame they aren’t around anymore.

  • Kane_Magus

    May 20, 2015 at 4:11 pm

They can make whatever movies they want in the future, I guess, but “Ghostbusters: The Video Game” is already the de facto “Ghostbusters 3” as far as I am concerned.

  • mac_guffin

    May 20, 2015 at 4:16 pm

I actually kind of agree with Jon. There is a lot that sucks about it, namely Jar Jar, the child acting, some bad CGi, etc., but it has a great variety of action and had some interesting ideas. Though, I don’t hate the other prequels as much as most either. They’re bad, but there is stuff to enjoy.

    • Highwing

      May 20, 2015 at 7:18 pm

Exactly. I said something very similar in the comments for the Earthworm Jim video. I find the plot to be much more interesting in the prequels, for one thing.

This was a great video! The conversations you guys had were really interesting. It’s cool to see James in his element, discussing movies.

fantastic video !!!! really honest and insightful towards the end.

    May 20, 2015 at 5:15 pm

As a note–you can get the unaltered Star Wars originals as laserdisc rips, basically advertised as bonus features on official DVDs from like 2006. I got Empire Strikes Back with that not too long ago for free.

Im sorry, but JonTron is soooooo annoying! The guy talks over James all the time, doesn’t listen to what James or Mike has to say. Please James, get rid of this guy.

  • May 20, 2015 at 8:19 pm

Dude… not trying to disrespect his opinion.. but the point he tried to make with Darth Maul killing Qui-Gon and going on to be main villian for next two and giving motivation for Obi-Wan is actually a pretty good idea the more I think about it.

    • Highwing

      May 20, 2015 at 8:50 pm

Obi-Wan had other motivations, though. One was to train Anakin in Qui-Gon’s place. Jedi aren’t supposed to seek revenge anyway. Darth Maul would in no way be necessary for Obi-Wan to have motivation. The prequels aren’t focused on Obi-Wan’s struggles anyway, so it’s not like there needed to be a “main villain” for him. The focus is Anakin and Palpatine’s influence on him.

  • May 21, 2015 at 2:38 am

James do you have the very limited HD-VHS format? Fox I think was the only people to support the HD-VHS and released about 13 movies in total, the last one I think was I, Robot. Anyway I saw one of these back in the day, was wondering if you have one.

  • Rennie Page

    May 21, 2015 at 4:28 am

Im sorry, but to all the Avgn “fans” that were hating on Doug Walker aka the nostalgia critic, just ha. Seriously, ha. This guy is the fucking worst. So annoying, like what the fuck. Somebody shut him up. Damn. It was near unbearable. I just want to hear James. If rather hear mike talk over james than this guy. I’d rather stick a spaghetti fork in my eye and fill my ear holes up with armadillo diarrhea while shaving my balls with a rusty NES pin connector.

  • rafelll

    May 21, 2015 at 4:42 am

I agree with Jontron. Phantom Menace is the best because it was not recorded with digital cams and the cgi effects looks more realistic AND the fight scenes with obi-wan are better the all other fights in the series because they were real, a real fight with actors and a real style of fighting and a real fighter(actor of Darth maul). episodes 2 and 3 were all cgi fights and if you watch ep 2/3 now they look like an outdated game, but not phantom.

Jon is an idiot. Or maybe it’s just a generational thing. I’m on team James and Mike when it comes to movies.

I also felt the same way dude. I think I must be getting old. You’d think he’d just been teleported from a different dimension by the way he was talking about films I assumed were pretty well-known cheesy/great classics.

Hands down, this is my favorite video. I love the way you have your tapes displayed. I had actually emailed Mr. Rolfe about how he inspired me to dust off my old VHS tapes and set up part of my (future) basement as an old “video store.” It really is great that you guys preserve the memory of the VHS format. Again, watching you guys talk about your old video stores brings back a lot of memories for me. It reminds me of how much I used to love going to mine as a kid. I used to hate going shopping in general, but when I went to my local “mom and pop” video store or Blockbuster, I could probably spend up to two hours walking around looking at the same VHS boxes over and over and not realizing two hours had passed. These nostalgia videos you make really help me appreciate my childhood. Thanks, guys!

  • May 21, 2015 at 6:44 am

  • May 21, 2015 at 8:10 am

I’m happy their never was an TLA in home town only Blockbusters since I wound fell very dum asking for Ice Cream sandwich with an side of celees list celees pizza.

  • May 21, 2015 at 8:44 am

Discussion Time. I think anyone who was not born before 2000, would not understand all these formats nowadays. I was born in 1998, I was introduced to movies through the VHS and briefly watching films on actual film projectors. I still remember Blockbuster as a kid not far away from were I’ve lived, however because it was shut down two years ago, it got replace by another supermarket. As if so many wasn’t enough. Always preferred VHS then DVD’s because in the U.K, the speed of the frame-rate is increased and the music sounds awful. Blu-Rays have been taken advantage in the U.K by companies by Arrow Films and The Masters of Cinema (U.K version of The Criterion Collection) and they are awesome. Last year, Masters of Cinema released a version of The Cabinet of Dr Caligari which I was introduced by you on Monster Maddness and the problem in the U.K is how certains films that are released in the USA and China/Japan aren’t here. Dr Caligari had one VHS and one low quality DVD. Only four Gozilla films (Original, Zilla, Final Wars and last year’s film). I do think it’s frustrating when companies get lazy with Blu-ray release mainly when Universal with Richard LinkLater’s Boyhood, only ONE trailer and ONE rushed featurette. For a film spent over 12 years, you think that it would have tonnes of commentaries, interviews and documentaries. Nope. That’s a huge shame because Universal have released their Monster Series on Blu-ray and it’s one of the best box-sets ever. The only thing it irritates me more is how they keep releasing Jurassic Park Box-sets over and over again.

    • May 21, 2015 at 9:16 am

Many of the local 5 blockbusters in may home town have been or well be picked up Gamestop since 3 of them ware next dour to Gamestop stores. 2 of the 5 closed only because of their location. 1 closed form it workers laving, and 1 was set on fire by Arason.

THANK you Jontron. “Have you SEEN Attack of the Clones?!” It’s SUCH the worst Star Wars.

    • ToadRoad

      May 23, 2015 at 4:02 am

Agreed. That movie doesn’t even have fun or excitement in small doses to balance out the dreadfulness.

    May 21, 2015 at 1:46 pm

Pretty good vid. How do I get into the video store? 🙂 As for JonTron’s comments on Episode I, I don’t agree. It is easily the weakest of the three prequels, and while(as JT said) it has a self-contained story… I don’t see how Darth Maul could have survived. Really, I can’t.

As much as I would have loved to have seen him survive into the next film, there is no sensible way that he could have. It wouldn’t have served the plot well. Maybe if Lucas had 4 prequels planned instead of 3, it might have been possible. But it is what it is. I think both Episodes I and II could have used another re-write, or two. II was better than one, but the balance between action and romance was a bit uneven. And that dialogue… ugh! Both films could have used better plot… and better co-writers, too.

III was the best film out of all the SW films, IMHO. The prequels aren’t the worst films out there, but they could have been much, much better. As for Jar Jar, I never had a problem with him, per se. Like JT, I’m not sure what all the fuss is about, there. He was an okay character. The only problem is… he just wasn’t funny.

  • May 21, 2015 at 5:05 pm

If you have one near you, Family Video, it’s still holding strong. We have one in the Midwest. We also have a small time video store that popped up called Zombie Video (awesome name).

Doug walker would have been a better choice for this video, seeing as this is his forte. He owns the movie reviews. But that being said, I still like James’ movie reviews better.

  • May 22, 2015 at 2:58 am

Why do so many people hate on Jontron? Most of his videos are really funny, and he obviously looks up to James a lot. You can tell he’s a bit nervous in these videos, so it’s normal he kinda rants about stuff. I didn’t ever watch Jontron til I saw the J&MM but he’s a real funny guy. No need to hate on the guy.

    • Michael Holmes

      May 22, 2015 at 4:23 am

    May 22, 2015 at 11:34 am

Nice video! Brings back a lot of memories.
And…finally someone who thinks mostly the same as me about the Star Wars prequel trilogy 🙂

Like Jontron, I find Star Wars: Episode II: Attack Of The Clones to be the worst part of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

Although AotC’s final 40 minutes or so contain some very memorable scenes (the Geonosis arena battle, the droid factory, the battle that starts The Clone Wars, Obi Wan Kenobi & Anakin vs. Count Dooku, Yoda vs. Count Dooku) and before that final 40 minutes the nice scenes on Kamino, it also has some of the most crappy dialogue I’ve ever heard in a movie.
The scenes between Padmé and Anakin and other scenes involving Anakin really gave me goosebumps at the movies!

Ok, Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace has a lot of flaws. But like Jontron, Jar Jar Binks didn’t really bother me that much. Personally, I had more problems with the young Anakin!

Wow…the podrace sequence (especially the extended one on blu-ray) is just so awesome!
To me, the final battle between Obi Wan Kenobi, Qui Gon Jinn and Darth Maul was the best light sabre duel of the whole prequel trilogy.
And I just love the character Wattoo 🙂

I don’t really agree with Jontron on Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. Think that was really the best part of the prequel trilogy. Especially loved Ian McDiarmid’s scenes 🙂

    • Highwing

      May 22, 2015 at 5:48 pm

The dialogue in Episode II was by far the worst part of it. Other than that and some poor CGI, the movie wasn’t too bad. I agree with what you said are the positive elements. But I also liked the Coruscant chase scene, and Coruscant overall looked amazing in my opinion. The story was interesting too (much more cryptic and a bit more complex than anything in the original trilogy). Overall, I just think people are way too hard on the prequels and sometimes just have very black and white arguments pertaining to them.

    May 22, 2015 at 1:02 pm

“Jar Jar never bothered me…I don’t know why?” – JonTron……..Yes he never bothered you because….you’re just like JarJar!!!! Your opinions suck!!! GO AWAY!!!!

      hahaha so true

    • Eelco

      May 23, 2015 at 4:31 am

Yes…Jontron is a very busy person.
So that automatically explaines why Jar Jar Binks didn’t really bother him?! Right 🙁
Ok, I myself am not a busy person and Jar Jar Binks didn’t really bother me that much as young Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd).
Ow…and let’s not forget about the very bad acting of Natalie Portman as Padmé.
I have to admit that there was too much of Jar Jar Binks onscreen and a lot of his so-called comical antics fell very flat or were quite annoying.

Hahah why does JON TRON sound like John Travolta when hes doing rocky? lol

I dont think my last post posted, anyways, long time fan, love what you do and what you represent! Your basement looks like the inside of my local video store when i was growing up, brings back a lot of great memories like Terminator 2 and Sleepaway Camp. Your video shows the great generational divide between our generation and Jontrons. You are unique in your appreciation for a time without cell phones and internet. Keep doing what you do, you make this world a better place!

Episode 2 is the worst. God… I just skipped over those pathetically written love scenes. Star trek had a lot of loved eras, it’s never been homogeneous so it’s easier to reboot. Star wars though…. I think episode 7 will be blah..

Good conversation between each other with the Star Wars prequels. Hopefully J.J. Abrams will make a spectacular Episode 7, it is definitely a movie i’m going to watch as early as I can.
