AVGN needs to review games that could be good, we were expecting to be good, but sucked. Not games we know are bad going in.

    • mrsleep

      April 1, 2015 at 1:43 pm

Nah, it’s about shitty games, and that’s what it should be about.

      • Highwing

        April 1, 2015 at 2:42 pm

Games that we know are shitty can still be surprising. I don’t think it’d be very interesting if AVGN stuck to the “games we think are good” idea for every single episode. So many of the really horrible games out there make for really interesting episodes.

      • Katana

        April 1, 2015 at 6:27 pm

Maybe you didn’t read where I said “but sucked”. Sorry I have to translate this to you. In laymens terms it means “shitty”.

      • Katana

        April 1, 2015 at 6:32 pm

Let’s be clear. What makes AVGN funny is imagining his character renting a game for the weekend with high hopes only to put it in a find out it is terrible. That is where the anger comes from. Disappointment from knowing your weekend is ruined. Put yourself back in the 1980’s when your weekend would revolve around a single rental.

A normal sane person wouldn’t rent the japanese game his last video. If someone did they would know it would suck so there would be no anger.

I can’t make it any clearer and if you can’t understand this I’m wasting my time.

      • Highwing

        April 1, 2015 at 8:57 pm

I don’t know who you’re talking to (me or Mrsleep or both), but I understood you perfectly well. And what makes AVGN funny is totally subjective. I think both kinds of games make for funny videos (the ones we might think are good as well as the ones we know are horrible). Both kinds can also be interesting. I’m just of the opinion that AVGN shouldn’t skip a game just because it’s known to be bad. 🙂

      • Pumphrey

        April 1, 2015 at 9:04 pm

@Katana “I can’t make it any clearer and if you can’t understand this I’m wasting my time.”

Dude, you’re arguing with a stranger on the internet, you’re already wasting your time.

      • net_rogue

        April 1, 2015 at 9:59 pm

Lets not forget that AVGN and Board James are 2 different characters. Board James has reviewed a few games that are actually quite fun. I think he strikes a good balance.

      • Katana

        April 2, 2015 at 7:29 pm

The reason why AVGN is so funny is because of his reaction to the shitty game not the game itself. Why would the character be angry? Because he just put $50 down on a game that he expected to be good and it turned out to be shit.

      • xZombie1x

        April 3, 2015 at 2:07 am

Ignore the commetns by katana. He/she/it’s been trolling.

    • April 2, 2015 at 12:08 am

You sound like such a pleasant person. And why are you commenting about AVGN’s latest video on a Board James comment section? Acting arrogant for no reason with other fans also doesn’t do you any favors.

    • April 2, 2015 at 1:09 am

Katana I made this same exact comment on the Hong Kong ’97 video…I agree. It’s way more funny when he’s criticizing a botched opportunity than it is when he is simply lampooning a game that had no chance from the start. Listening to someone complain about a game like Hong Kong ’97 just illicits a “So? What did you expect?” kind of feeling.

    • April 2, 2015 at 1:14 am

Mystery Science Theater 3000 works because multiple people are involved. This gives them the opportunity to play off of each other and come up with funny gags and jabs on the spot. With one person it just comes off as someone who ordered a shit sandwich and then complained about it.

    • Highwing

      April 2, 2015 at 1:24 am

You guys have a point, but I still don’t see why it’s so bad to just have BOTH kinds of games. It’s just that there’s so many shitty games out there that make for funny/interesting videos, and I’d hate for AVGN to skip all of them just because it’s well-known that they’re awful. To me, the point of AVGN is not him just playing a certain type of game, but him just being angry (or shocked, disturbed, etc).

      • Highwing

        April 2, 2015 at 1:26 am

But I guess if you think it’s just not possible for well-known shitty games to make funny videos, then that’s enough of a reason to not want AVGN to review them.

      • April 4, 2015 at 7:20 pm

Nah my favorite eps were games that were kind of good but had a lot of bullshit in them. Dick Tracy comes across as a perfect game for mockery. It was decentish back when it came out but going back to it now, it’s like “Are you fucking kidding?”

Games like Red Riding Hood or whatever other weird unlicensed garbage he has dug up are pretty meh IMO

    • Kane_Magus

      April 2, 2015 at 2:34 pm

I guess it’s a good thing that you have no say over what games AVGN does and does not review, then.

By the way, this is s Board James video, not AVGN, so not sure why you are making a comment about AVGN here.

    • Katana

      April 2, 2015 at 7:35 pm

AVGN is funny not because the game is shitty but his reaction to the shitty game. His anger. And what would make him angry? More than just a bad game. It’s because he just put $50 of his hard earned money into a game and it turned out to be shit. This premise works for games such as Back to the Future, Superman, etc because it’s reasonable that someone would pay $50 for those games and they turned out to be a disappointment. Nobody would buy the Japanese game so there is no reason for him to be angry. He is just reviewing a bad game. James is smarter than this and I’m not quite sure what is going through his head. Maybe he is burnt out, etc. which would be understandable after over 10 years.

    • ToadRoad

      April 16, 2015 at 12:54 am

I don’t know why everyone says you’re trolling. It’s a perfectly valid argument, but maybe it’s how you phrased it. I agree that the early episodes showcased his childhood disappointment resurfacing as volatility and anger. It was a catharsis to vent about all those wasted weekends where great characters/properties/ideas were turned into horrific digital entertainment. It’s hard to be disappointed or enraged by something when you go into it with the expectation it’ll be lackluster or infuriating. That’s what I got from what your saying, and games like Big Rigs, HK97, etc. aren’t shocking him with the low quality, he is choosing them because he already knows they’re low quality.

      • ToadRoad

        April 16, 2015 at 12:58 am

But I don’t think he’s burned out. I think he just had a finite list of games to do. Once he finished doing those, its became mostly about requests. And since people want to see him review the bad games (whole point of the show) it’s no surprise to him anymore that he’ll be playing crap.

    • June 22, 2015 at 12:52 am

What Japanese game are you talking about? Also, this isn’t AVGN it’s just James. He’s reviewed games that he knows suck and they’ve still been funny to watch, get off your high horse.

    April 1, 2015 at 1:53 pm

Cool! It would’ve been cool to see what happened to Board James at the end of the Dream Phone episode in the beginning of this one. Like he was released from a rest home/asylum or something. Idk, still pretty cool though and I cant wait to see more episodes!

  • April 1, 2015 at 1:55 pm

Yeah! Board James made me go get myself a copy of mousetrap, loopin louie and shark attack. Here in Argentina is fuckin hard, man. Lookin forward for the new episodes

Finally registered to Cinemassacre just because of seeing this board game. I had it in my closets for nearly 20 years before I donated it, along with my other board games, to a Boys & Girls Club. I never did convince my friends to play it with me, but the voice in the video brought back vivid memories of me trying to pull off winning on my own. One of the few board games that can be played single player while still retaining a win or loss mechanic. Very stressful to try to get everything you need and then find the virus as the game clock ticks down. Thanks for making the public aware of the game, James, and I’m happy to see this feature return to Cinemassacre. I love your work.

  • Sam Hain

    April 1, 2015 at 3:54 pm

Oh my goddess that was a great video. I really love the story in the Board James series. To be sure the Mr Bucket & Dream Phone sequel have been my favourite videos of the entire Cinemassacre run but this is right up there. What the other two did for horror (and they were great horror movies in their own right) this did for sci fi action. Well done sir, I look forward to more like this. Mayhaps a murder mystery using clue, or mystery mansion, or something, and tie in with the missing friends?

I had this game as a kid. I liked how it was capable of functioning as a one-player game. I had that multi-configuration toy gun as a kid, too. Two things from my childhood on one video – cool.

    Welcome back Board James!

  • April 1, 2015 at 5:31 pm

2 year hiatus, or 2 years in prison…
But I must say, BRILLIANT! For a moment, I thought Board James went scitzo, but then found out it was 3 viruses taking over his show. :p
Then again, it could still be part of his new psychosis…

  • JayRam

    April 1, 2015 at 5:51 pm

James, I hope you read this:

The intro set in the attic totally reminded me of the one for Are You Afraid of the Dark? With some creepy music and some unsettling images of things you’d find in an attic, it could totally work for the series as an intro.

Just as the Midnight Society sat around a campfire to tell stories, it would be cool to see you start each Board James episode with you in the attic.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • SolskeyKong

Anyone else notice “How to Host a Murder” in the background?
    Reference to ‘Dream Phone’ perhaps?

  • April 1, 2015 at 6:12 pm

    I really enjoyed this.

  • Don Skiver

    April 1, 2015 at 6:18 pm

    What the fuck just happened?!

This board game looks fucking awesome to play, I’d love to play that game with my brothers. We’d get a huge kick out of it.

But…what the fuck happened with that ending?! Does that mean it’s still possible to bring back Mike and Bootsy? Is Board James (the real one) going to attempt to reprogram those robots so he can have his dead friends come back and play with him again?

I think I’m more pumped now for Board James than for AVGN! Never before have we had an entire season of a show be serialized with a back story like this!

    • Pumphrey

      April 1, 2015 at 9:08 pm

I think it’d be cool if it turned out that the people Board James killed were just robots, then he could bring M.F. Mike and B.L. Bootsy back easily.

      • Don Skiver

        April 2, 2015 at 6:23 am

That’s what I’d do, definitely. Then he could have a spare character that he could bring in at any time to play as anyone he wants, or as an evil incarnation of himself or something. Board James can play board games whenever he wants now with these robot pals!

      • Don Skiver

        April 4, 2015 at 9:17 pm

Or maybe he could take a cue from Konami’s “Snatcher”.

  • Dean Nielsen

    April 1, 2015 at 6:28 pm

I am so glad you brought these back.

  • April 1, 2015 at 6:30 pm

The Board James character seemed different at the start, like you were changing the character (which is good because he never really had any imo). Seemed creepier and got this hint that he’s alone most of the time, just reminiscing of his childhood. you could really develop his backstory into some dark, but funny, shit lol. but then he just became the Nerd, tearing apart games.

  • April 1, 2015 at 10:36 pm

Awsome James. Here’s some othergame ideas. Nightmare and Atmosfear ( VCR horror games). One as equal to the other. Another is Raise the TiTanic there a plastic titanic on a spring load shaft. And as you a salavage boat captin remove artifacts the boat rises. Also there a monopoly like space game called solar quest: There was a nerdy math game called Smath. Mall madness is a fun girls game .

    April 1, 2015 at 10:49 pm

Interesting to see this episode. Nice slick beginning! Have mixed feelings about this episode, though. Interesting to see you stick to your guns on the deaths of Bootsy and Mike. Noticed that Board James is living in the attic. Is that b/c he’s afraid the police might catch him?

Still, it would be nice to see you resurrect the other two, somehow. Maybe as zombies! Or… maybe it was all in Board James head. Maybe Board James is holed up in a lunatic asylum, somewhere! Who knows? The possibilities are endless! In any case, Board James needs someone to play with!

As for the vid in general, it wasn’t bad. Not the best, but certainly okay. Not sure what to make of that ending, though…

  • doublesbrian

    April 1, 2015 at 11:04 pm

I really enjoyed this. Had a mixture of game explanation and story line that tied together really well.

I’m hoping in a future episode you play the back to the future game and bootsy and mike bust back in though!

  • April 2, 2015 at 12:24 am

I saw this game at an antique mall today. It was $45. Far too pricey. I saw the Rodney Dangerfield game too. It was cheap and still sealed. I doubt Rodney even understood that game.

Hey James, you wouldn’t happen to have the rare Monopoly clone “Ghettopoly” would you? That game was infamous and was called racist by many, and the feds destroyed thousands of copies of the game in 2004. It cannot be legally sold in stores or on Ebay(though Amazon still has it and it can be bought from the creator’s website)

Holy shit, that just blew my mind. I wanna play this. It sounds like the most insanity driven board game ever created. I want 3 other hardcore badass friends who could spend like hours doing this game until we are all masters. Then go to tournaments. This feels like the most intense game ever. Nail biting, interactive, mind-bending and stressful fun! This has to be the one! I need this game!

What’s the name of that gun/sword at the end. I had that as a kid, and now i want to find one on ebay.

  • April 2, 2015 at 8:19 pm

I remember this game. Not sure if it works anymore. It’s been in the garage for years, and the batteries probably leaked already being in the heat and cold for so long. Not to mention the box itself has seen better days (so I’m not sure all the parts are there anymore). Still, I really enjoyed playing it back in the day, especially since you could play it solo.

I had to register immediately after watching this new episode, just to tell you what a masterpiece you created here. The beginning up the attic from 0:30 to 0:52 was so damn creepy.. that vacant expression you had… wow a real psychopath was there and your slow approch towards the cam scared the crap out of me. Excellent performance man, keep that style going and even expand the creepy parts.

I got this game for Christmas one year. Played it all the time with my brothers. Dogs partially chewed a bunch of the pieces though. Would love to find it again some day. ^^

Oh my god, James, you’ve awakened a memory from my life that I haven’t thought about in around 18 years. I had this game when I was very young and would play with the pieces constantly. I had completely, 100% forgotten it until now, when I saw the new Board James episode and thought oh, that looks familiar. Thank you so fucking much!

Here I am thinking that Board James and all his friends are either dead or locked up and I wake up this morning to find he has reviewed my favorite childhood board game. Nice.

It’s great to see Board James again but it’s not the same without Mike and Bootsy. 🙁 You what could be awesome: a plot where Board James tries to contact his old friends playing with an Ouija board game or something, well it’s just an Idea I am sure you guys can come up with something great.

I’m glad to see the return of Board James, and I like the fact that the season has been developed ahead of time, so obviously there is much more of the story to come.

Am I wrong in assuming that the “real” Board James comes in at the end of the video and blows all the clones away? Meaning that Board James isn’t in the video at all? Or was that just a highly elaborate metaphor for schizophrenia/multiple personality disorder?

      April 3, 2015 at 10:48 pm

I also forgot to mention I really love the new Board James opening logo and the creepy music leading up to it. It made me feel like it was the beginning of an epic saga, along the lines of Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit. Anyone else pick up on that vibe, or have I gone the way of Board James?

Idk if it’s intentional or not, but I love when he hints towards the deaths of Mike and Bootsie, and to the right is a game called “How To Host A Murder”. That’s a brilliantly subtle prop placement and attention to detail.

  • April 4, 2015 at 2:03 pm

in the next ep you should have mother fucker Mike and Bad Luck bootsy come back as zombies..

    April 4, 2015 at 3:08 pm

Awesome to see you’re doing more Board James! I may have a donation if you don’t already have it. It’s one of the last classic bored games of the 90’s. Ever hear of Goofy Golf Contraption?

  • April 4, 2015 at 3:34 pm

    Totally Yeah!

This is what I was talking about =) It was a long wait but it was worth it.

As I said before, I enjoy your boardjames videos a lot more than AVGN.

Cool episode =) You should consider doing more of this, there is still a lot to explore in the world of board games.

    Congrats!

Haven’t watched the video yet, but YES!!!!!! I used to love playing this game with my brother and friends.

I hope Bootsie and Mike come back. Doing board-game reviews by yourself is going to be weird, lonely, and depressing. So hoping that that was the “true” Board-James at the end, meaning his friends are still alive.

I also used to have this game. I used to bring it to school all the time, since we had 45m of free time every day and mine was spent saving humanity with my class-mates.

      April 4, 2015 at 6:13 pm

I rewatched all the Board James eps in anticipation of this. Almost half of them were solo reviews, so it’s still keeping in the spirit of the series. Plus, he explained that the season was planned out in advance, so I get the feeling there will be allusions to Mike and Boots. Maybe some “flashback” episodes wouldn’t be out of line.

You could make a hilarious “Ask Zandar” episode (I saw the box in the background), be it in the vein of talking board games come to life, a la Dream Phone or Mr. Bucket, or something totally different.

I fucking LOVED this game as a kid. And you’re right, all of my friends hated it. Even my parents thought it was too confusing. It was one of those games that unless you played it a lot you had no chance at winning

You know what would’ve been cooler? If they wheeled him into a padded cell with a mask on like Hannibal Lecter and chucked a bunch of Board Games in for him to play. Just an idea.

    April 9, 2015 at 5:55 pm

Mmmh… Between the creepy opening and the multiple camera angles during the video; foreseeing the ending, I’d say there was much more work put in this video than anybody would ever notice. Like many of James’ videos. Also: BOARD FUCKING JAMES! *cries*

Pretty good video. That game always looked awesome, just from the box. It looks pretty cool, but kind of a pain to come up with. So, the other characters are really dead and won’t appear in future episodes? That’s a shame.

    April 12, 2015 at 5:46 am

I am SOOOOO happy to see Board James back!! I love seeing game reviews in the 8 bit world, but it’s fun to see some board games too. Just sayin James: If a board game took out the other characters (MF Mike and Bootsey), maybe another board game can bring em back. A magic game? A time traveling game? But, even if you go it alone, MORE BOARD JAMES PLEASE. 😀

That is a bitching logo, James. I love this series and this looked like it had an awesome 80’s commercial to go with it and I would have asked my parents for after having seen said commercial. This one was fun!

  • July 19, 2015 at 1:57 am

Loved this game as a kid. This ep feels like a new AVGN.

Hero Quest, Key to the Kingdom, Nightmare (and all its spin offs/sequals) Dragon Strike, all that shit.. classic.

owned them all (and hopefully still do somewhere)
