Okay, so given that there is no other comments, I can test something I been wondering, as I often cannot see my comments.

At any rate I like this idea, very surprising, but glad Mike is still there πŸ˜€ And if this comments shows up: Awesome work you are doing James, thanks for many many years of fun.

    • March 30, 2015 at 1:32 am

It’s still James & Mike Mondays. I just thought it’d be funny to cross my name out. =)

      • TheBaron

        March 30, 2015 at 1:43 am

Oh I know and yea, it is a good way of showing it which gave me a nice surprise as to what and how you were playing. What I meant was that I initially thought that it would be just the two, and then when I realized that it was you were going to do, I was glad to see that it weren’t one of Dougs friends/colleagues, but you πŸ˜€ And the whole screen comparison was awesome.

      • Belligeron

        April 1, 2015 at 8:20 am

I would have liked to see more of your gameplay on there. I wish it would have just stayed on the 2 screen mode you had it on. And I really can’t stress enough how much I do not want to see Doug in more episodes. That guy never seemed to want to STFU and he’s not funny at all. That’s just my opinion lol

    • April 8, 2015 at 12:04 am

I think the guy before me is getting James mixed up with Doug or something. Doug has a brother. He’s involved a shit ton in his videos. You can even hear him in this video being a smartass at some of the stuff they’re saying in the background.

  • TheBaron

    March 30, 2015 at 1:32 am

So my comments do show πŸ˜€ So I’ll mention that I would love to see more like this as well, testing the games or stretching the J&M Mondays. Love how the competitive nature shows even through this experiment.

  • March 30, 2015 at 1:32 am

Very interesting idea. I like it, at least for only one video. You never cease to find a way to keep this series of videos interesting by trying something new. I’ve been enjoying all the awesome guests you’ve had on the show, too.

Hey kid, james is right about the lag on HDTVs but mike and the new generation don’t know anything about that. smh

    • Deathbringer

      May 9, 2015 at 11:00 am

In this case Probotector is a PAL game which run at 50hz and Contra is NTSC which run at 60hz. Probotector is the slower/laggier game than Contra from the regional differences, but it’s also correct that HDTV have processing lag that needs to be turned off with a game mode or something to that effect.

Seriously best damn video of all time, for the fact of the NC playing along. All you needed was Pat and it would be the all time greatest video. You 4 are the best at what you do and the only videos I watch contain one of the 4 of you. Love James’ movie REviews as well. Both you and Doug are fucking GENIOUS. There is no over-exaggerating here. Nobody does it like yall do it. I feel a lot of people
would agree with my statement. CRUSHING IT!

  • Lastor

    March 30, 2015 at 3:32 am

What the hell man, you guys(*) are in a movie about Kevin Smith? What’s the deal, I mean were you gonna say something about it or just keep it under wraps altogether?
Sorry. This police interrogation will be over now.

    *=by guys I don’t mean Doug.

    • Lukas Sprehn

      March 30, 2015 at 4:54 pm

Yeah, I was wondering about when they would disclose it too. It’s really cool and awesome recognition, especially seeing how Kevin and James are both indie filmmakers out of New Jersey, and James is fan of Smith’s work.

        March 31, 2015 at 11:05 am

Doug Walker is awesome as the Nostalgia Critic. I don’t think this worked out too well. I didn’t feel like there was a good mesh in this video. I rather just have James & Mike in the nerd room. It feels like they forced this video. Feels like, ”Hey Doug, do you wanna…”

This one was very fun to watch!
Please do Carmageddon 64 on N64 for James and Mike Monday sometime. Especially considering the new one, Carmageddon: Reincarnation is coming out this April.

    • ToadRoad

      March 30, 2015 at 9:37 pm

Carmageddon #2: Carpocalypse Now on PC was so addicting that I’d fake sick from school to play. I never knew there was Carmageddon for N64, so I’m glad I read your comment. Gonna check it out.

  • Don Skiver

    March 30, 2015 at 6:10 am

Well, by virtue of being a PAL game, Probotector is going to always run slightly slower than Contra, since it’s an NTSC game; 56 hz vs 60 hz. It’s the same reason why some PAL games have slower music or lower pitched music or whatever.

    • March 30, 2015 at 1:19 pm

Right, but often enough game developers don’t do that, they just sell the same exact version in Europe. Sometimes they correct the speed and the music, sometimes they only correct the music pitch, sometimes they do nothing at all. Why the PAL and NTSC versions produce different pitches for the same music is a riddle to me (why didn’t they put in an extra clock source for the audio generation?)

      • Don Skiver

        March 30, 2015 at 7:06 pm

I wish I knew the answer to that question. πŸ˜›
It’s something that I have a hard time dealing with when it’s a game I used to play a lot as a kid since my brain seems to anticipate what the music is “supposed” to sound like, and it creates some kind of dissonance within me because of how it “actually” sounds like. It’s hard to articulate. But it’s the same reason why I *have* to play some games on actual hardware vs emulation because the sound or music isn’t generated 100% accurately and it drives me INSANE.

Also, some games seem to be optimized for PAL or for NTSC. For example, on Dragons Lair on the NES, the controls are really bad on the NTSC version, but if you play the PAL version, the game seems to control MUCH better (though the game is still a shitload of a fuck).

    • Deathbringer

      May 9, 2015 at 10:57 am

      I swear PAL is 50hz, not 56.

  • signormu

    March 30, 2015 at 10:47 am

Please stop with this “european” version of ninja turtles without the ninja word in it! It was only the UK, everyone grew up with NINJA turtles and nunchaku where I live. Please, stop.

    • whatabird

      March 30, 2015 at 12:49 pm

In France it’s called “Les Tortues Ninja” it’s mean “The Ninja Turtles” where’s the fuck went the words “teenage” and “mutant” ?! πŸ™‚ At least we had the original USA version dubbed in french and not the UK version.

      • signormu

        March 30, 2015 at 8:24 pm

In italian is called “tartarughe ninja”, same meaning. James still saying it was the same all over Europe really bugs me..

    • Bunshichi

      April 11, 2015 at 3:40 am

It was also called “Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles” in Germany though. I always found it weird when I heard about the “Ninja” Turtles. As a child I thought “its not Ninja, this isnt the right name, its Hero”.

  • JayRam

    March 30, 2015 at 11:11 am

Very cool idea for an episode.

    March 30, 2015 at 12:14 pm

Can’t wait for the next “Critic & Nerd” episode tomorrow!

    • March 30, 2015 at 12:42 pm

      Is this true?

      • Lukas Sprehn

        March 30, 2015 at 4:56 pm

Yes it is. James and Doug has filmed a crossover, that’s coming out tomorrow, where they play their characters. I think it’s going up on Doug’s site channelawesome.com (not thatguywiththeglasses.com anymore. That site is no more, in case people don’t know, and it became channelawesome.com)

  • March 30, 2015 at 12:21 pm

Doug’s genuinely funny. I find myself laughing out loud.

  • March 30, 2015 at 12:40 pm

Did you run out of games or what? πŸ˜€ Just kidding – itΒ΄s a nice xperiment.
Robots are cool by the way, and in my opinion, theyΒ΄re way more cool in this game, but hey, I didnΒ΄t have a choice back then…Europe, you know…:/

  • March 30, 2015 at 1:14 pm

Have you tried playing the Japanese version of Contra? It’s vastly superiour, with cutscenes and animated backgrounds and shit.

  • March 30, 2015 at 1:14 pm

Ugh, I don’t like this guy, he is way too over the top. Is it too much to ask to just want James and Mike in these vids? Oh well.

  • March 30, 2015 at 1:25 pm

If you have the chance, try the japanese version of contra in the famicom; is the same thing but it has a lot of detail and movement in the backrounds, it looks really good.

        March 31, 2015 at 11:21 am

These comments saying that the comments that say Doug is obnoxious are obnoxious. I love NC, but this video did not work. As much as I hated the Jontron videos, I’d rather have him than Doug. I don’t think these kind of videos work well for him. Long live NC.

  • xeoneex

    March 30, 2015 at 1:51 pm

I was WONDERING what game those 2 robot versions of the Contra characters came from. I remember playing Super Mario Brothers Crossover from Exploding Rabbit, they added those skins from the Contra game, but I never could figure out where they got them from. Probotector… Sounds rather weird honestly

  • probotector

    March 30, 2015 at 1:52 pm

Awesome video, I didn’t think I would ever see you doing so many collabs, but I certainly approve.
The PAL version runs at 50hz vs 60hz for the NTSC one, not only that but also the European NES’s CPU actually runs slower than the American one, so, Probotector *might* run up to somewhere around ~20% slower than Contra, that’s probably why it feels “laggy” to James, it is actually running slower, so… this isn’t a fair comparison at all, oops.

  • optrode1

    March 30, 2015 at 2:46 pm

I really don’t find the nostalgia critic entertaining at all. Come back Mike!!!

  • taykel

    March 30, 2015 at 3:30 pm

That’s cool you got Doug Walker in a James and Mike video. I can’t wait to see the upcoming NC.

  • Goonz

    March 30, 2015 at 7:57 pm

I dont mind Doug Walker I actually enjoy some of his vids but idk all he talked about was how everything looked like a dick

  • March 30, 2015 at 9:13 pm

Yeah, Not diggin’ Doug. Very annoying personality. Actually after seeing him I kinda rather have JonTron. He wasn’t my favorite but much more likable than Doug. Uhhhggg, otherwise great episode guys!Great idea too! Can’t wait for more!

  • ToadRoad

    March 30, 2015 at 9:51 pm

I like all the episodes, but if they’re going to revisit any game again, I hope it’s Toejam and Earl. That game is as fun to watch as it is to play. Plus they never beat it.

  • March 31, 2015 at 12:18 am

I love that you brought Doug in on this one. It would be cool to see you do A Nightmare on Elm Street for nes. Can you and mike do some of the Disney Sega Genesis games. These games are like Pinocchio, Aladdin, and The Lion King. I would love to see you guys play Pinocchio for Sega Genesis

  • greedo

    March 31, 2015 at 12:26 am

Good heavens, Mike, you guys really have to look into fixing the comments system. It’s like Hungry Hungry Hippo… it swallows up my comments! (Speaking of which, if you guys ever do another Board James vid, that’d be one to try out. That is, if James can ever figure out how to resurrect you guys from the dead). πŸ™‚

    • greedo

      March 31, 2015 at 12:29 am

As for the episode, not bad. It’s not something that I’d want to see every week, but it’s definitely nice to switch it up, here and there.

  • Gerardo Loya

    March 31, 2015 at 1:18 am

Contra is the best name for the game. Probotractor or what ever doesn’t fit all.

  • Tross

    March 31, 2015 at 1:42 am

So that’s Probotector. Kind of anti-climactic if you ask me. I was hoping for more fun differences between the games. Oh well, it was pretty cool to see.

  • March 31, 2015 at 10:04 am

I live in the UK and grew up on all 3 Probotector games, I didn’t even know it was called Contra in the US till I was in my 20s lol

  • Dirty Jared

    March 31, 2015 at 10:19 am

I really think it’s time for you two to play the greatest two player game of all time, on any console. RIVER CITY RANSOM Baby! Make it happen, You guys will be in there like swimwear.

    March 31, 2015 at 11:15 am

    Not a fan of Doug…

  • Zach Standig

    March 31, 2015 at 1:42 pm

I thought for sure that Probotector being PAL would be slower, but I guess the game speeds up to normal when used on an NTSC system.

  • March 31, 2015 at 9:01 pm

Lol Probotector is a “Contra” ceptive hahaha

  • doublesbrian

Love the poor-playing Doug Walker here!

  • April 4, 2015 at 6:48 am

Oh, this so takes me back in time. I used to play this 2-player mode with my brother. We played the Probotctor version (which I find cooler than Contra, and the nam is ten times cooler – p.r.o.b.o.t.e.c.t.o.r). Still have the the feeling of the controls in my fingertips when I watch the video. What a great game (The last level is really inspired by the Alien movies). Maybe the name change had something to do with the Contras in Nicaragua? They were not very popular in Europe. I’m not sure. I know there were a lot of talk about renaming Rush’n Attack because it risked to anger the Russians. But it never append. I remember there was a lot of stupid stuff going on back then (and still is). Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles renamed Hero Turtles. Garbage Pale Kids being banned, for whatever the reason..

  • Ben_from_G-town

    April 11, 2015 at 12:45 pm

Wow, a guest appearance by Doug Walker. I wasn’t expecting that. And you’ve got one Mike playing 1-player Contra, and you guys playing 2-player Probotector. Interesting. Was there somebody else talking in the background? Doug’s brother? There was some funny commentary here. Definitely a fun experiment.

  • mike420

    April 24, 2015 at 11:51 pm

i love contra its one hard motherfucker to alotta times starting over before i beat it n u guys say ur doing shit i think yall r doing good n that fire jump is a bitch

  • June 2, 2015 at 6:08 pm

Great to see Doug involved in this, too. James, you and Mike should totally do Shattered Soldier sometime. πŸ˜‰

  • June 3, 2015 at 3:36 pm

Yes! Probotector, finally! That is the game I am familiar with, not that weird “Contra”. It was very nice to see James playing that, on 2-player mode, no less. Thank you, James and Doug.
