Hey guys, fantastic job as always. I attempted this game a few years ago at a friends house. Found it to be one of the most frustrating things I had ever played. Keep up the good work.

Push the button once to shoot once is pretty much bullshit. Most Shmup’s I play these days are almost entirely “Hold button to continuously shoot”, a few are even constantly shooting whether you do anything or not (generally mobile game shmnup’s)

Having to push the button every time is bad game design. I would have used my NesMax or w/e it was called to play this.

    • K6CTX

      February 16, 2015 at 2:53 am

      Don’t use the term “shmup”.

      • Deathbringer

        February 16, 2015 at 9:18 am

Whenever I hear that term I think of Totalbiscuit saying it.

      • BrandeX

        February 19, 2015 at 1:47 am

‘Shoot ’em up (also known as shmup or STG)”

      February 16, 2015 at 12:21 pm

Too bad they don’t make the game fly the ship/character around for you, too, so you don’t have to do that either, right?

  • February 16, 2015 at 1:32 am

    Awesome¡

  • 911Bonez

    February 16, 2015 at 1:34 am

Always one of the most challenging games!

  • Wally

    February 16, 2015 at 1:44 am

James, you never completed your thought, what is the one thing you would change to make this game better?

  • February 16, 2015 at 2:05 am

Bootsy is there, eh? Could this mean a brand new Board James is on the way???? That would rock!

Watching this though…man, “Bad Luck” Bootsy? More like “Ungodly Skilled” Bootsy!

  • rpbaca

    February 16, 2015 at 2:07 am

Where is super meat boy!!! I’d like to see some hard ass games from this millennium!

  • February 16, 2015 at 2:08 am

Take note Mike and James; no matter how ridiculously difficult a game may be, there’s always a few folks out there who can and have dominated it. I couldn’t ever get anywhere in Silver Surfer, either. But for some the difficulty can never be high enough, unless the game itself self-destructed on one death.

Your average gamer couldn’t stand this game for more than 5 minutes, let alone beat the crap out of it. So don’t feel bad about being average. Do you really want to be a master of Silver Surfer that badly? I know I don’t 🙂

  • generalleoff

    February 16, 2015 at 2:09 am

It’s actually very easy to know what you can and can not go through in this game. If your bullet hits it you will hit it. If your bullet passes through so can you.

  • Don Skiver

    February 16, 2015 at 2:14 am

Oh god…not this fucking game again!
But in all seriousness, I watched a speed run of this game on youtube where some dude went through the whole game without dying OR using a turbo controller! He was trying to submit it to speed demos archive, however they rejected the run on the grounds of “Silver Surfer” being a pure auto-scroller and that they won’t keep records on auto-scrollers.
It really was a shame since he did such an amazing job slogging through this shitload of fuck of a game. :/

    • Hanglyman

      February 17, 2015 at 1:37 am

That’s a shame. It seems like it should still qualify, since the autoscrolling stops on the bosses and the time it takes to beat them is entirely dependent on the player’s skill, so it’s not quite as simple as “anyone who beats it without dying gets the fastest possible time”.

  • February 16, 2015 at 2:32 am

Daaamn… Good job Bootsy. That was impressive. 🙂

  • Rodd Kinzer

    February 16, 2015 at 2:56 am

I used to play this game when I was a kid, and I got my ass kicked!!! I couldn’t get through each of the stages, and I dare to say Im a little disappointed that Galactus is not the final boss. Good video, you guys are the shit and I’m sure boosty’s finger is sore hahahaha

  • 0skulock

    February 16, 2015 at 3:15 am

Have you guys played Ikaruga? Would love to see a J&M Mondays vid out of that game, it’s pretty fucking hard as well!

  • bulbasaur15

    February 16, 2015 at 4:42 am

Is it me or does the final boss of the game look a bit like Glacius from Killer Instinct with boots and a gun?

  • z_thompson

    February 16, 2015 at 4:53 am

There are also multiple different frog enemies in Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, if anyone is keeping track 🙂

  • diesel

    February 16, 2015 at 6:22 am

    Bootsy is a master gamer.

  • AbsoluteDeicide

    February 16, 2015 at 7:08 am

Bootsy needs his own show called Fuck These Games. He’s a monster.

    • diesel

      February 16, 2015 at 5:36 pm

That is an EXCELLENT idea.I would really like to watch him beating ass of some hard as shit games.

    February 16, 2015 at 7:15 am

As an advice to Mike. I tried to read Marvel comics like he wants to, like only spider-man, or only X-Men, or only punisher. But there are lots of crossovers, like Captain America appears in Avengers and in Tales of Suspence. And some times in Avengers they say – Cap is not here, ’cause he is on an other job, and he’s fighting Red Scull in Tales of Suspence, and Avengers say he’s a traitor, so you gotta know what happened, so you gotta read Avengers and Tales of Suspence. Or like Spider-Man makes an appearence in X-Men and makes a reference to Spider-Man comics, so if you read only X-Men you’ll be out of touch. Finally, I tried to read only Punisher comics and there is one crossover with Daredevil, and in Punisher he tells his side of the story, but in DareDevil you read about the same events from Daredevils perspective. So take my advice, Mike, and start reading from Fantastic Four #1 (1961). It’s less comfusing and much more interesting. Either way, you’ll just have to read other numbers of different Marvel comics, just to know, what’s going on.

    February 16, 2015 at 7:45 am

Jeez, that game is for masochists! Good lord. 😀 Congrats on beating it, Bootsy!

  • DHumblest

    February 16, 2015 at 8:17 am

Shadow of The Beast is harder than this.

  • February 16, 2015 at 9:39 am

    That’s an amazing ending!
“The Device Piece Has Been Surrendered.”
    Wow!

  • NashKnight

    February 16, 2015 at 9:47 am

You need to bring Bootsy into these videos more often! Bootsy is a badass mofo man!

    • KyperTrast

      February 16, 2015 at 11:11 am

Heh I remember playing and uploading a playthrough of Silver Surfer after watching the AVGN review years ago. I even started off with Mephisto’s stage for some reason. Checkpoint recovery is rough so it helps to memorize what enemies drop powerups, and you’ve a bomb to help you out if you’re too underpowered to destroy enemies

    • KyperTrast

      February 16, 2015 at 11:12 am

oops did not mean to reply to this specific comment =/

    that was intense..

  • February 16, 2015 at 1:10 pm

This game is NOT hard once you actually learn how to play it. I beat this game in 2 days. Once you’re fully powered up you can smoke through everything

  • frostare

    February 16, 2015 at 1:24 pm

I don’t think Touhou is harder than this game.

  • GameCom

    February 16, 2015 at 1:59 pm

At this point seeing Bootsy I get excited because I know ill get to see what ever game your playing get beat, wish he was there more so we could see more “The End” screens.

  • February 16, 2015 at 2:22 pm

  • gluserty

    February 16, 2015 at 5:29 pm

Impressive job; I know I wouldn’t advance very far in this game.

  • Dean Nielsen

    February 16, 2015 at 6:51 pm

James’ face @ 25:54 is priceless.

  • February 16, 2015 at 7:30 pm

Had anyone played Stick it to the Man? In this game you can read minds and there’s one guy that his inner monologue is all about Silver Surfer on the NES, it’s really funny…

  • Ace

    February 16, 2015 at 8:01 pm

Might be needing to change this show’s title to Bootsie Mondays from now on!

  • February 16, 2015 at 8:01 pm

That must be the best winning screen of all time! A naked dude on a surfboard flexing his muscles and the caption saying “Congratulations! The device piece has been surrendered!” Epic.

  • February 16, 2015 at 9:23 pm

The game was brutal and through me into familiar to AVGN fans fits of rage back then. Made only worse as I am a HUGE Silver Surfer fan and really wanted to make it a great experience, but alas it was not to be. Great to see someone hand the game it’s ass though! Finally!

  • greedo

    February 16, 2015 at 9:25 pm

When I saw that you guys were going to play this game, I said to myself, “Silver Surfer? Again? That game is unplayable”! But now I see that it isn’t unplayable, so much as it is cheap. I’m certainly impressed with Bootsy’s skills. He definitely makes it look easy, as you guys say. Thanks again, for such a great video!

  • AbareKiller

    February 16, 2015 at 11:40 pm

Great, fun video… awesome job, Bootsy! Had to go back and watch the AVGN episode right after, one of my favorites. I had this game as a kid and never saw the final stage.

  • February 16, 2015 at 11:48 pm

What a gut-wrenching playthrough. Great job, Bootsy!

  • pleasetakeabow

    February 17, 2015 at 1:17 am

Bootsy you are the man! That was intense!

  • Hanglyman

    February 17, 2015 at 1:43 am

After watching James beat incredibly hard games like Ghosts n’ Goblins and Street Fighter 2010 and then fail to master even basic game mechanics on games like Shadows of the Empire on easy mode, I’m curious: do Booty’s amazing skills extend to more modern games?

  • blendo75

    February 17, 2015 at 2:01 am

One of the best J&MMs so far. Always fun to watch Bootsy play.

  • The Wicker Man

    February 17, 2015 at 2:15 am

Before I watch this or read any comments, i’m predicting that Bootsie is going to show you both up and kick ass on this game!

    • The Wicker Man

      February 17, 2015 at 2:50 am

I knew it! James and Mike, you should check Bootsie’s scalp for a 666…

  • The Wicker Man

    February 17, 2015 at 2:55 am

Forgot to say you’re wrong, Mike. In Danger Mouse, Baron Greenback is actually a toad not a frog. Although being an Englishman I am impressed you’ve heard of Danger Mouse as I didn’t think anyone over the pond knew of him so i’ll let you off! 😉

    • ArcadeNostalgia

      February 17, 2015 at 12:04 pm

Nickelodeon played Danger Mouse often in the US in the 80s. They even played Banana Man.

I do no hit runs of this game 😡 I go through the whole game without taking any damage/lives. It’s one of my favorite “shmups”

  • February 18, 2015 at 11:45 am

    ASSSSSSSSSS

  • February 18, 2015 at 12:02 pm

    fuckin Bootsy

  • gamelover200

    February 18, 2015 at 12:23 pm

No margin of error (the “mistake” limit) when it comes to dodging, I think that is the biggest reason why its the hardest, esp when there are no “infinite checkpoints” like in touhou.

  • GamerHeaven

    February 18, 2015 at 1:55 pm

The Silver Surfer episode is the best. Bootsy should have his own show; I did not even know he was a gamer! You can play it here in one click http: // http://www.vizzed. com/ playonlinegames/ game.php?id=674&ref=65348

  • February 18, 2015 at 7:23 pm

Can we have at least once a month bootsie beating a hard game. The guy was giving me heart attacks at the end!

  • ikensee

    February 18, 2015 at 8:45 pm

Hahaha, I like how Bootise is very Obi Wan-like at the beginning when he tells James, “Oh, there is, when the time comes.” hahaha

  • Suzina

    February 19, 2015 at 3:34 am

At about 28 minutes you say you don’t know what Silver Surfer is “all about”.

They’ve actually answered why he’s on a surf board.

Kirby was tired of drawing spaceships.

That is to say, Stan Lee had asked the artist working on his Fantastic Four comic. Without Stan’s permission, the artist Jack Kirby drew in the Silver Surfer. When Stan Lee confronted him, he said Galactus needed some kind of herald to find planets for him to gobble up. When Stan asked him, “Then why is he on a surf board?” Kirby said he was tired of drawing spaceships.

They argued, Stan Lee asked for the Silver Surfer to be removed, but it was late, and it stayed.

Bootsy you are truly skilled at this game. Some of those reactions were pure instinct. You should play games competitively.

  • Anthony33

    March 8, 2015 at 5:57 am

Bootsy RULES. Great gamer. Reminds me of a friend of mine who used to beat tough games and then I’d be able to beat them later once I saw him do it once or twice and remembered the stages and tips on how to beat them. Pro Wrestling was probably the toughest one for me, among games I liked. Not even any Game Genie codes to make it easier.

  • March 20, 2015 at 3:50 pm

Bootsie is the most talented gamer I’ve ever seen! WOW 😀

  • Goatgruff13

    March 20, 2015 at 11:05 pm

Nice shirt James! I dig that show.

  • Lance Weagley

Holy crap that was intense. Very impressive; well done.

  • Aaron1375

    April 6, 2015 at 9:48 pm

I liked this game. Your AVGN video kind of helped prep me for it so I ended up winning this one. I did have to use turbo on it though. I actually think Lifeforce is way harder, especially if one does not use the 30 life code.

  • Internoob

    September 15, 2016 at 1:04 am

I would love to see you guys try Super R-Type 3 for SNES. It’s a nightmare where you can’t touch ANYTHING just like this game.
