Hot! Debbie Sue Voorhees has an AMAZING rack in this movie…
February 13, 2015 at 2:33 pm
No doubt there; it’s worth a look, for sure.
February 13, 2015 at 12:21 pm
Finally! I’ve been refreshing the main page so many times waiting for this!
Awesome review! And I’m one of those who love this episode, especially since it gives the series as a whole more variety. I mean if you went to the theatre to see this you may have been disappointed, but in retrospect each episode has a well defined role in the series this way, and I like it. (opposite to say Halloween where it’s always the same thing over and over)
btw lol: the chopped arm of the dead guy is still holding the chocolate bar.
February 14, 2015 at 12:16 am
cant help but be that asshole who disagrees. Im actually not a huge friday the 13th fan. honestly I think its the worst of the big 4 of 80s horror ( jason, mike, freddy, pinhead) . and this entry has always stood out to me as the stinker of this particular series.
February 14, 2015 at 10:18 am
If you liked hellraiser over this, you crazy! I watched ever single hellraiser movie last year and they are just bizarre… Not so much scary as just weird… Kinda boring actually. That is a series that is all over the place, several of the movies were scripts for not hellraiser films that they just kind of tacked pinhead and his gang into at the very end.
February 13, 2015 at 12:23 pm
Excellent work you guys!
I can’t wait for the conclusion
February 13, 2015 at 12:25 pm
BTW, the song being played while Violet dances is: His Eyes by Pseudo Echo…it was also directed by a porno director…
February 13, 2015 at 12:36 pm
And I mean A New Beginning was directed by a porno director…
February 13, 2015 at 2:38 pm
Yeah, i purchased the Pseudo Echo album containing “His Eyes” (solid album overall)based on liking it from the film.
February 13, 2015 at 12:39 pm
I like James’ theory about Jason. It really seems to apply… at least to Jason’s influencing pop-culture. Idea of killer in hockey mask was copied and parrodied so many times, yet it always feels like it was Jason – just more or less dumb.
February 13, 2015 at 12:49 pm
when you said “AVOID THIS MOVIE” You shouwed the cover of part 4 – THE FINAL CHAPTER.
February 13, 2015 at 12:52 pm
P.S. Violet, the robot dancing girl’s real life mother is Kristen’s mother in A Nightmare on Elm Street part 3
February 14, 2015 at 12:47 am
I always found this bit of trivia pretty damn funny for some reason.
February 13, 2015 at 1:37 pm
1. Watch the whole part of that video again
2. Get the joke
February 13, 2015 at 12:50 pm
February 13, 2015 at 1:13 pm
I remember watching a marathon of these movies on cable and they skipped over this one. It was probably for the best.
February 13, 2015 at 2:08 pm
The 5th part is entertaining, that´s it in my opinion. I´m truly glad that the copy-Jason idea wasn´t going any further, because ‘Scream’ was the best to introduce this kind of style. Jason´s still a mysterious being – or a freaked out person.
February 13, 2015 at 2:09 pm
You didn’t mention one of the parallels between Mr.s Voorhees and the paramedic. They both lost a son due to negligence on their caretaker’s part. Someone should have been watching Jason when he drowned, and someone should have been watching over these teens, and certainly NOT let the guy with anger issues be wielding an AXE!
As a result, madness consumed them and they went on a killing spree.
And yes, Debisue Voorhees has the best rack in all the Friday the 13th movies! I wonder if her name alone secured her a role in this movie?
February 13, 2015 at 2:22 pm
I hated this one. Everyone in this was an asshole. Especially Vic.
February 13, 2015 at 2:23 pm
When i saw this as a kid, i thought that Tommy was played by the guy who played the blue Power Ranger, lol
February 13, 2015 at 2:31 pm
That’s a good theory actually. That would explain why Jason Vorhees changes over time and becomes more defined, like a story; because that’s literally what he is (the killer version of him, anyway). It’s sort of like, if a ventriloquist is speaking to you through a puppet, it’s hard not to look the puppet in the eyes. That’s actually what the Scream movies are about, the killers are always just people who use the symbol of the mask to create fear, but even if people know this, their minds will still play the same tricks on them.
February 13, 2015 at 2:36 pm
I’m fine with this installment, and in matter of fact have it on VHS. When i initially viewed this film in the 1980’s, I didn’t like that the killer wasn’t Jason, but in the years sense I’m glad that plotline was (if ever so loosely) tackled.
February 13, 2015 at 3:11 pm
So, all the quality issues in this video, were they intentional?
February 13, 2015 at 3:12 pm
I would think that Women would really appreciate the central theme to this film, which is to hoard all of your chocolate and never offer it to anyone else, lest you set-off a murderous rampage.
February 13, 2015 at 3:24 pm
Of the original 8 movies this is the only one that is not available through Netflix streaming. I wonder why?
February 13, 2015 at 3:47 pm
I always thought of this movie as being the crappiest of the bunch until now, James’s point of view changed my mind completely, now I want to watch it again so bad, I hear a Jason binge a-comin’…
February 13, 2015 at 4:52 pm
Pt.V is quite clear red mask/blue mask! BY this point you can’t complain, it’s who’s available at short notice. Just waiting for my favourite of silliness (pt 7) and also the review of the Hodder era (loved his quotes about being Jason “Jason would never kill a dog” or “Well if they want a skinny Jason for X they cast the right guy” – both paraphrases)
February 13, 2015 at 5:45 pm
It’s the Star Trek V of Jason movies. That’s all you need to know. Does that make it worse than 1? You be the judge.
February 13, 2015 at 6:41 pm
wow. having watched your J&M for the game on Youtube earlier in the week, i decided to tune in here.
i had honestly never really considered sitting through these movies, but after watching all five of these reviews in a row, i am now seriously considering doing so.
you really know how to sell cinema as a maker to other artists and fans.
there is just something about 80’s outlandish cinema, even the cinematics displaying normal things that makes it so easy on the eyes and senses. like, with those techniques, i could almost just watch a movie about a coffee cup and be entertained, so its amazing when there’s even the SLIGHTEST bit of real content.
maybe its just because i was a kid then, but since the advent of CG effects and cookie cutter Hollywood personalities (bodies,) i feel like something has just really been lost in this art. in Hollywood at least.
February 13, 2015 at 7:04 pm
A problem with James theory on Jason…
The mask has continuity, for instance there is a gap in the mask from where he had the axe in his head from the end of “Final Friday” that stays in entire run of the films.
So it has to be the same Jason…or all these copycats had a mask custom made to fit into continuity they would not have known about.
February 13, 2015 at 9:54 pm
But hey, that’s just a theory!
February 13, 2015 at 10:01 pm
Interesting theory there, so Jason is basically Crystal Lake’s version of the Headless Horseman. I could buy into that
February 13, 2015 at 10:14 pm
Jason as a stand alone complex of copies without an original. Sort of a symbolic identity that vengeful psychopaths take on when they go on their killing sprees. That’s an interesting take on the character.
Although, it doesn’t quite work in the later movies where Jason becomes an undead monster and it’s clearly the same guy.
Anyway, great review and you made me appreciate the fake Jason twist in this one a lot more than I used to.
Happy Friday the 13th and Valentine’s Day everyone. 🙂
February 13, 2015 at 10:25 pm
James, why did you decide to not do all 12? Freddy vs. Jason is dubbed “Friday the 13th Part XI” and “Nightmare on Elm Street Part 8” as well.
The 2009 release is the 12th film.
February 14, 2015 at 12:17 am
I enjoyed all 5 of them. Good stuff. A scene in part 5 I always laughed at and it was so close to being showed here was the guy that scared tommy with the mask “wants the matter, can’t take a joke” then tommy does a body slam on him.lol.
February 14, 2015 at 12:40 am
Dudley from “Diff’rent Strokes” runs over “Jason” in this one!
February 14, 2015 at 2:00 pm
I wonder if this was before or after Dudley got molested by the bicycle shop guy.
February 14, 2015 at 12:57 am
Hey James, would you like a chocolate bar?
February 14, 2015 at 1:07 am
I’m surprised that you like this one. For me, it’s third worst of the series after Jason X and Jason Goes to Hell and I would follow it with Jason Takes Manhattan. I hated every character in this one including Tommy Jarvis. Interesting that the Friday the 13th series has TWO movies where Jason is not the killer.
February 14, 2015 at 1:21 pm
nice review i can’t wait till the other reviews.
February 14, 2015 at 1:53 pm
Nice review. You came up with some interesting theories, there. I look forward to the next round of reviews in March.
I can’t find the Top 13 Friday the 13th Moments video that James keeps referencing. I found the page here on the site, but the video doesn’t load. I even tried previewing the google cache version of the page, but no dice. Does anyone have a working link for the video? Also, the ‘lost you password” function appears to be broken on this site, as it kept giving me an error message when I entered my email address, so I had to sign up with a new email.
February 14, 2015 at 2:05 pm
Part 5 is viewed as the black sheep of the series, much like Halloween 3 and Nightmare 2 are viewed.
I think it still works as a slasher film and it has the parts 1-4 feel to them.
February 15, 2015 at 12:47 am
Yeah… This movie is like having erectile dysfunction. What I mean is that the movie teases you and gets you interested in all of these possibilities, you’re excited, you’re ready, and then right when its time to “deliver the goods” it disappoints the shit out of you like a big limp dick. What the fuck am I supposed to do with this thing? You try to make it work…you finagle it…you try a few different positions/perspectives…but at the end of it all, you realize the futility of it, and you just wind up being frustrated, angry and completely unfulfilled from the experience.
That’s how I feel about this movie. :/
February 15, 2015 at 12:49 am
Tell me about this part being cursed! I got it to play in full screen mode only after few attempts and refreshing the page!
February 15, 2015 at 1:25 am
Every single Friday the 13th movie is fucking god awful. He shouldn’t waste his time with this fucking shit. The only things worth seeing in the movies are the kill scenes, and not even all of them. Maybe half.
February 15, 2015 at 1:28 am
You just don’t get it. All you care about is killing. Church is all about that.
February 15, 2015 at 1:27 am
One of, if not, the best of the series. What I love about it is that it features a main character that I can relate to; a familiar face. Someone with history. Not only is it a lot of fun with some great moments, its a fun mystery/whodunit. Could it be Tommy, who we are tripping out with, not knowing if we can believe our eyes? Could it simply be a copycat killer? Or could it actually be Jason back from the dead? Is it the curse of Crystal Lake? Who’s next? And what will be left of them?
Not since Part 2 has there been a mystery similar to this.
Possibly the most underrated of the entire series.
February 15, 2015 at 2:05 am
Ft13th movies are horrible garbage
February 15, 2015 at 2:46 am
Ahh, the art of argumentation is still alive and well.
February 15, 2015 at 11:17 am
This may have already been said but notice that Jason’s Mask has Blue Stripes whenever he is the copy-cat. It has red stripes though whenever Tommy imagines seeing him.
February 15, 2015 at 1:54 pm
The chocolate/axe scene is epic.
December 8, 2015 at 7:31 am
Yeah, Joey is annoying and I agreed with Vic chopping him up. And Victor J. Faden is so cute!
February 16, 2015 at 7:26 pm
I still say the reveal looks more like Matt laying there than Roy
February 17, 2015 at 11:28 am
While I do find this movie entertaining (as I do all of them), this is one of my least favorite of the series. Mainly for various reasons that James mentioned. I don’t like that it wasn’t really Jason. And from that, it pisses me off that this movie gets one of the highest body counts in the series and it wasn’t even Jason. I hate that the jackass who killed the fat kid (who I felt bad for, in a funny kind of way) gets a free pass and never gets killed. I also hated Tommy’s character in this movie. He’s just kind of a temperamental jerk (yeah I know he’s crazy but he’s annoying). Also, I don’t know what it is, but there’s just something about the actor’s face that I hate. He just annoys me. Also, where did he learn to fight like UFC and how did he get so buff, all while in a mental institution? I guess I’m just taking it too seriously but I still enjoy the movie.
December 8, 2015 at 7:25 am
That “jackass” is my favorite character and I don’t blame him <3
February 17, 2015 at 5:02 pm
I can sum this movie up easily. Worst plot, best breasts.
February 17, 2015 at 10:24 pm
Anyone have a working link to the top 13 Friday the 13th Moments? There’s no video on the page I found.
February 17, 2015 at 10:55 pm
The idea of Jason being just an urban legend may have worked… if only wasnt for the decapitaded head of Mrs Voorhees…
February 19, 2015 at 8:07 pm
You didn’t talk about the best rack in all of the Friday The 13th films.
February 20, 2015 at 7:09 am
Thanks Cinemassacre! Great work! Love these Friday The 13th reviews. Cant wait for the rest!
February 20, 2015 at 3:42 pm
I’m surprised no one mentioned Tommy’s random fighting.
February 23, 2015 at 3:29 am
I recall a book, maybe even a series of books, based off the Friday the 13th movie franchise. If I remember correctly, they introduced the idea that Jason’s spirit was connected to the mask and any who put it on was possessed by Jason. I think the movie “Jason Goes to Hell” sort of implemented the idea but instead of a possessed mask, Jason’s ghost just out right jumped into the next body.
February 23, 2015 at 8:11 am
please fix the player, has
heaps of buffer but wont play in firefox.
February 23, 2015 at 8:12 am
after going full screen
February 24, 2015 at 9:03 pm
Can’t wait to see your thoughts on parts 6-1O!!!!!!!!
February 25, 2015 at 2:30 am
Mind doing a Chinese version of street fighter called “Future Cops: Street Fighter” I want to see you guys thoughts on it as I think it is a comedic type of movie. FWI their is no English dub I can think of but if your very lucky and happen to find one then good for you it’s easier to review as you don’t have to read the subtitles
February 25, 2015 at 2:32 am
And yes I know this has no relation to the Friday the 13th video I just want to give this idea to Cinemassacre
February 25, 2015 at 9:19 pm
You know…the movie actually does hint that the killer isn’t Jason; the hockey mask is different. Jason’s mask has a red triangle on the forehead while the one the killer in this movie wears has two blue triangles on each cheek under the eyes.
That was clever of them.
February 25, 2015 at 9:20 pm
You know despite not being a big slasher movie person I might give this movie a watch, Why? Machete vs. Chainsaw duel! That’s why!
February 28, 2015 at 12:27 pm
Are you going to finish the series???
March 1, 2015 at 1:39 am
“That’s why he’s immortal. Because nobody can forget him” Interesting you say that, since that was the premise of the Nightmare on Elm Street series. It was the fear, memories and talking about Freddy that kept him alive, until they pulled him onto the real world, killed him and never spoke of him again until Jason came back and made people talk about Freddy again.
March 12, 2015 at 7:18 pm
I actually liked the majority of Part 5, regardless of the fact that it was a Jason-less film. It’s definitely a different film compared to the others in the franchise. And just remember, according to Shavar Ross (Reggie), “I DROVE THE TRACTOR!!”
March 17, 2015 at 9:40 pm
You had a problem with Jason getting killed by a kid in part 4 but this doesn’t bother you?
September 15, 2015 at 7:56 pm
I think after 4 it would have been a cool idea for it to always be a different killer behind the hockey mask and you have to guess which character it is each time.
March 23, 2016 at 11:25 am
Nice to hear James defending Part V. I always liked this one.
