November 10, 2014 at 6:08 am
well done james!
November 10, 2014 at 6:27 am
Just wanted to say that i really appreciate MIKE. he is a good friend and although u could tell that James was frustrated, he still kept encouraging him to finish the level and look what happened! Ive never had a friend like that, but hopefully one day i will.
November 10, 2014 at 2:59 pm
November 10, 2014 at 3:35 pm
I am here now buddy.. I am your friend~~
November 10, 2014 at 5:20 pm
Zorg, you creepin.
November 12, 2014 at 4:10 am
I agree with you, Chaos Emeralds. He’s always been really encouraging and he’s clearly a great friend of James’. Good on you, Mike!
November 14, 2014 at 11:22 am
November 22, 2014 at 4:20 pm
haha, yea my friend would probably laugh at me every time i died and say that a fucking suck…. i have great friends lolz
November 10, 2014 at 5:45 am
Fuck the Turd-o Tunnel
November 10, 2014 at 5:58 am
Well that was a frustrating watch – most of the time it has been quite clear what you’ve been doing wrong! After you worked out you needed to press forward to give the extra distance, you were either pressing back at the wrong time (when approaching the platform) or went too far so you didn’t have time to jump again!
Good video regardless 🙂
November 11, 2014 at 12:55 pm
Basing on how does D-pad of NES controller look like, I think it’s safer to assume, that he was accidentally pressing down when doing forward and thus falling through pit on the side of platform. I myself am able to get through jumping over pits wtihout moving forward at all (and when I do move forward, I usually overshoot it).
November 12, 2014 at 4:13 am
I disagree. I think James was landing OK but was jumping too soon after landing, so the amount of distance he was needing to jump was gradually becoming longer until eventually it was too long. When he finally did it he was in a more consistent rhythm (albeit he was right up against the screen) and therefore didn’t compromise the jumping distance. Anyway, it was a real kick when he finally did it!
April 26, 2015 at 8:43 am
He’s also going WAAY to far to the sides while avoiding the walls. It makes him slow. I always nudged just a bit up and down, narrowly avoiding em. It’s a risk though.
November 10, 2014 at 6:06 am
my comments don’t appear on the page
November 11, 2014 at 11:19 am
That happens to me as well. Sometimes they appear and sometimes they don’t appear. I blame the glitch gremlin.
way to go on beating not only the stupid jump part, but the whole fucking level..
November 10, 2014 at 6:12 am
I like the videos, been watching the nerd for years, but James really needs to work on his gaming skillz, and yeah i said skillz with a Z.
November 10, 2014 at 6:26 am
Wow, i was so excited at the end, but you did it James. I’m impressed and overjoyed 😀
November 10, 2014 at 7:26 am
As a kid, it didn’t take me *too* long to beat the turbo tunnel, both getting the warp and finishing the stage (though getting the warp was much easier). However, the one stage that *I* always had trouble with was the stage where you had to race that rat down the elevator shaft to the explosives. That one almost always got me. Used to piss me off to no end. I’ve beaten it a handful of times as a kid, but by then I was beat to hell, had no lives, no continues, and so my next mistake in the next stage was usually my last.
November 10, 2014 at 6:43 am
Fuck! I should have let the video finish! Great work beating the turbo tunnel james! You had a great coach who didn’t give up on you!
November 10, 2014 at 6:34 am
Congrats on finally beating that level! Now to beat the rest of the game, lol. The turbo tunnel is actually one of the easiest levels in the game. My demon level was the spinning cogs level Clinger Winger.
November 10, 2014 at 6:42 am
Hey James & Mike, the jumping part at the turbotunnel is much easier than you guys were making it out to be. Here’s the trick: The platforms are trapezoidal in shape meaning jumping from the top side of the level means you have to jump much farther than if you hug the bottom. You can even try this before getting on the bikes when you’re on foot-you can’t make the jump on foot if you’re all the way up but jumping across when you’re on the bottom of the screen is easy.
Try the jumping part again but HUG THE BOTTOM! If you do this you don’t even have to push right on the D-pad to make it. Give it a shot!
November 10, 2014 at 7:31 am
Well jeez, dudes! You sure know how to make a girl shit pants! Exciting vider. I foond myself on the edge of my undies. Thanks, guyth!!!
November 10, 2014 at 7:44 am
I fucking love J&MM. Conglaturations James!
November 10, 2014 at 7:47 am
November 10, 2014 at 8:01 am
rotfl. at the end of the video I become a sports play-by-play announcer yelling “HE DID IT! HE DID IT! JAMES ROLFE HAS FINALLY DONE THE IMPOSSIBLE!” *crowd cheers*
November 10, 2014 at 8:13 am
The pause beat is really catchy.
November 10, 2014 at 8:37 am
That was some intense stuff right there. Who knew Mike would turn out to be such a Yoda?
November 10, 2014 at 1:49 pm
Guess you never saw him play his favorite Atari game (Kaboom) or knew that he’s beaten Mike Tyson’s Punchout. Mike is pretty godly at at quite a few games.
November 10, 2014 at 8:53 am
NIIIIIIIIIIICEEEE! Another fuckin’ childhood trauma knocked off the list XD
November 10, 2014 at 9:08 am
Here’s the trick to the exclamation point jumps. I figured this out back when I was a kid and I used to rent this game.
Stay at the bottom of the screen. the platforms look as though they are rectangular but they are not.
They are triangular and at the top and the middle you have very little space to land on.
If you stay at the very bottom, this part is considerably more forgiving.
You can give it a test before you are on the bikes to get an idea of the dimensions of the landing zones. If you walk up on the / part you will fall right through the platform, just like how the bile seemingly was falling through.
Give it a shot.
November 10, 2014 at 9:15 am
Now do the snake pit!
November 10, 2014 at 10:02 am
That was awesome, the ending was the best!
November 10, 2014 at 10:19 am
The sound of the nintendo controller’s plastic cracking, made my hands sweat. Congratulations.
November 10, 2014 at 10:29 am
Good job James!
November 10, 2014 at 10:42 am
Great team you make guys
November 10, 2014 at 10:43 am
Congratulations! Now beat Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 😛
November 10, 2014 at 10:55 am
I can see the problem you are having at those jumps, you are under-shooting them; you have to move a little more forward.
November 10, 2014 at 11:15 am
Way the go, James. Good video and a good timing too.
November 10, 2014 at 11:26 am
Now go rest our nerds !
November 10, 2014 at 11:27 am
I know it’s silly because it’s just a game but I almost cried when Jame made it, haha! Way to go!
November 10, 2014 at 11:38 am
I wish I had video proof of this, but I beat this game once circa 1992. I left my nintendo on continuously for almost a month and quite possibly loosened my TV screen from punching it repeatedly. This game caused me so much fucking anxiety. I’ll never forget the day I beat it though. I wasn’t even happy when I beat it, I was angry and exausted and relieved.
Now I want to try it again, 22 years later. I’ll fucking record it this time!
November 10, 2014 at 12:02 pm
At about 6:15, for one brief moment, Mike looks like a father who’s about to slap his kid (James) right upside the head for goofing off when he should be paying attention.
November 10, 2014 at 12:19 pm
Yes! I finally beat this the other day.
Mike reminds me of a young Steve Buscemi in this video.
November 10, 2014 at 12:44 pm
Hahaha – congratulations James! 🙂
I love being able to look forward to Mondays. Thank you for that.
November 10, 2014 at 1:11 pm
“It takes a booby to beat a booby”
And the text is located…right beneath two boobies. Real subtle, Rare.
November 10, 2014 at 1:20 pm
The fact he did it without an emulator save state makes it that much more amazing. Thank you james for all your hard work, can’t wait to buy the avgn blu ray. Monster Madness was incredible thanks for reviewing “IT”.
November 10, 2014 at 1:32 pm
oh dear James, that’s the “graviton” my brother and me suffers the same thing, so we put that name to this strange force that suck you down, I hate it to.
we’re your fans from chihuahua mexico.
November 10, 2014 at 1:57 pm
I liked this video so much I am going to post a comment on here as well. I enjoy the chemistry that they have, and like how Mike doesn’t care how much James fails at the level. James and Mike Mondays Rule! You guys are doing us fellow gamers proud.
November 10, 2014 at 2:04 pm
NICE JAMES! Man that was a good video!
November 10, 2014 at 2:44 pm
HOLY F***ING S***!!!!!!!!! Oh man, this is the most intense episode yet. James I’m so proud of you. You’ve inspired me to take on a demon that’s been haunting me for 5 years. I’m gonna go beat a certain game that I never could beat!
November 10, 2014 at 2:45 pm
Mike begins explaining.
James bobs his head to the tune.
“Are you paying attention?”
These guys have great chemistry! 😀
November 10, 2014 at 2:53 pm
Now he just has to beat the snake pit.
I beat the genesis version & I vowed to never play the game again. Too much pain.
November 10, 2014 at 3:03 pm
I’m so glad you didn’t give up james, it would have been a lame episode, seeing you making it was awesome !!! it’s the best james and mike monday so far!
November 10, 2014 at 3:04 pm
November 10, 2014 at 3:15 pm
James, you are hitting down and going out of bounds every time you fall through. I do it every time almost. You can even walk off the stage before you even get to the bikes by going too far down.
November 10, 2014 at 3:39 pm
Magnificent! I was afraid you were going to end the video without conquering the level, but you did it. Well done.
November 10, 2014 at 3:52 pm
November 10, 2014 at 4:01 pm
Have never beaten this but now I want to. gj
November 10, 2014 at 4:02 pm
Congrats James. I know how brutal that turbo tunnel can be. But, if you ever play the turbo tunnel again try easing up on the controller. Relax a little bit. Drink one of those Rollin Rocks on the Rollin Rocker. It sounded like you were about to snap the damn controller in half- snap, crackle, and pop! Ease up and relax, like Mike. I wouldn’t be surprised if you had the whole damn D-pad pressed in during those ! jumps.
November 10, 2014 at 4:20 pm
You guys make my monday!
November 10, 2014 at 4:33 pm
Ah, the sweet level of frustration. I think it´s pedagogically irresponsible…:D
November 10, 2014 at 5:23 pm
Way to go James I was excited to see you did it after many years wahoo good job James!
And also good job Mikes for coaching games you guys are an awesome team and a great video :)! look forward to seeing your next Monday and future AVGN video’s :)!
November 10, 2014 at 5:24 pm
NICE one Contra 3 Alien wars next please
November 10, 2014 at 5:30 pm
Congrats! From what I’ve seen, this is a more worthy game to complete than Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. This was a chapter worth closing.
November 10, 2014 at 5:34 pm
Damn great video, y’all. I actually cheered and clapped when you made it through the level. Awesome job!
November 10, 2014 at 5:57 pm
You fucking did it!!
November 10, 2014 at 6:20 pm
That was fantastic
November 10, 2014 at 6:22 pm
November 10, 2014 at 7:07 pm
The big thing on those jumps as I’m sure someone has said before now is that you have to aim for the bottom, not the middle or top. I learned that from either Nintendo Power or some other such magazine and it served me well. Even though I only beat this one time by pure luck, I always lost by not jumping or by slamming into things, rather than by missing jumps.
November 10, 2014 at 8:02 pm
The problem was the timing of your jumps. I never push forward, I just jump across each platform and pass that part every time.
November 10, 2014 at 8:24 pm
Holy shit, please do more videos like this. Honestly it was entertainment in itself just watching the suspense. Tackle those childhood demons and kick their fuckin’ ass!
November 10, 2014 at 9:17 pm
When you jump you can’t press up or down buttons else you fall to the background,
November 10, 2014 at 9:24 pm
I’ve beaten the game a lot, but always had to use the warp on the snake level. I was unable to pass the snake level legit. The last stage of snakes was too much.
November 10, 2014 at 9:52 pm
That last part of the video should have the Rocky theme song placed over it because you finally beat it, just like he finally ran up the stairs without stopping.
November 10, 2014 at 10:37 pm
Today nerd history was made!!!
November 10, 2014 at 10:42 pm
Should have the Metal Gear alert sound effect.
November 10, 2014 at 10:53 pm
That was such an awesome video, my heart was racing at the end so bad!
November 10, 2014 at 10:59 pm
hey James/ mofo Mike
get the 5 lives code by HOLDING Down +A+B then press start at the beginning and every game over screen. How about James finishes the entire game?
November 10, 2014 at 11:21 pm
Congrats James. Huge accomplishment.
November 11, 2014 at 12:32 am
Now do it two player.
November 11, 2014 at 12:36 am
hahahah you did it, cue the balloons and confetti!!!!!!!!!!
November 11, 2014 at 12:38 am
This doesn’t count.
November 11, 2014 at 12:39 am
This doesn’t count. In order for you James to beat the turbo tunnel, you have to play it from beginning to end in one shot.
This is awesome.
The ending is so rad haha
November 11, 2014 at 12:40 am
You can’t have Mike play half of the level for you to get you to a check point and then claim you beat the whole level.
November 11, 2014 at 12:49 am
Great video. Very suspenseful and celebratory ending. Hope you guys keep playing and beat the entire game.
November 11, 2014 at 12:48 am
Great job you can always do it your the FUCKIN NERD love your stuff Turbo Tunnel check
November 11, 2014 at 12:51 am
Congrats James, I was waiting for the AVGN to come out and a profanity laced tirade to occur. WAy to stay the course.
November 11, 2014 at 1:32 am
I was actually laughing and smiling at the end of this vid! I’m so happy you got through it ^_^
November 11, 2014 at 2:15 am
Wow. You must be on cloud nine James. I’m happy for you. I was going to say to rejoice in the small victories, since I didn’t think you’d beat the whole stage, but you even managed that. Congrats man! I have demons from my childhood too, but not so much specific stages. Beating a Genesis game called Biohazard Battle(not affiliated with the Resident Evil series) is on my bucket list. In fact, seeing this vid makes me want to try again.
November 11, 2014 at 2:53 am
That fucking part was the only time I ever had to call the Nintendo Power Line. Their advice was “You just gotta time it.” I’ll never forget that. I’ve never beaten that fucking thing… Maybe it’s time to go back to the past.
November 11, 2014 at 3:01 am
I..Cant believe you beat that part, i couldnt do it as a kid and still cant but you inspire me to dust off the cartridge and try it again. Thank You James and Mike.
November 11, 2014 at 3:48 am
The easiest way to get past those jumps is to move your bike to the bottom of the screen. Since the platforms are far wider at the bottom than the top you get a lot more time to get your timing right. You don’t need to move forward and back, just jump at the end of the platform. Pretty simple once you know what you’re doing.
November 11, 2014 at 4:04 am
Also, the reason you were falling “through” the platforms was because you were pulling back after your jump and landing before the platform starts (if the graphics were better you’d land in the balls and smack into the front of the platform). Each platform is spaced about a jumps distance, so if you pull back and shorten your jump you fall short.
November 11, 2014 at 3:54 am
I felt like I was moving at warp speed at the end there.
November 11, 2014 at 6:58 am
Lol, congratulations James. 🙂 I got genuinely happy for you. I personally know a little something about having gaming-demons from the past that you need closure to. Like, I remember this kind of same shit, specifically from another game; in Tiny Toons 2 Montana’s Movie Madness for the Gameboy, there’s a stage like this as well and it works exactly the same way with the same kind of speed, the same kind of controls and the same kind of obstacles. And I hated it exactly the same kind of way. But I have beaten it since then and it felt so good… at that moment, you’re just like on top of the fuckin world! 😀
November 11, 2014 at 7:54 am
Grats on beating a level thats been hounding you since childhood. Though surprised with this game pause music it wasn’t called hypnotoad.
Great tutoring by mike, should of been a force ghost with the teachings you gave james.
November 11, 2014 at 1:44 pm
James dancing to the pause music over and over makes this video great.
November 11, 2014 at 2:04 pm
This may be the best Monday video yet. Only a couple of others made me have spasms of joy or disappointment like this one. Seeing the huge smile on James face when he did it was priceless.
November 11, 2014 at 2:43 pm
May i suggest next game on monday?
ZEN Intergalatic ninja 😉
November 11, 2014 at 5:21 pm
James greatest achievement. I think that’s the most excited I’ve ever him. Hope they’ll play the rest of the game now. I’m hooked.
November 11, 2014 at 6:59 pm
Congrats on beating the Turbo Tunnel! It was a close one, but you managed to pull that off! Seriously, towards the end, I was certain that you weren’t going to make it. But I’m glad that you finally beat one of your childhood demons! Now, if you could only beat Ninja Gaiden, you’d be all set! 🙂
(Speaking of which, that’s one classic video gaming challenge I was never able to pull off. Never got past those stupid flying ninja. Were the developers on acid when they created those? Seriously).
November 11, 2014 at 7:11 pm
Grumpy Mama Mike, looking out for James. “James… James… are you paying attention? I’m trying to show you.” lol
November 11, 2014 at 7:33 pm
Well done, James. It took me weeks to beat that fucking tunnel on the Genesis version.
And I died immediately on the next stage. This game, good as it is, is far too hard.
November 11, 2014 at 8:52 pm
This is what a perfect Mondays video is guys, good job. James wasn’t going forward enough, thats the issue, the part where he pushes up is just that its taking away from the length of the jump. Anywhoooooo You guys should do the SNES version of this, Battelmaniacs. Its often overlooked but its the better game, the controls work and theres a 2p mode where you don’t kill each other. of course coordinating two people for the turbotunnel is still sort of impossible.
November 11, 2014 at 9:57 pm
me and my friend beat the turbo tunnel on 2 player…it did take a bit of practice but it is possible. we were prolly 10-12 years old at the time…but i am living evidence it can be done 🙂
November 11, 2014 at 10:05 pm
Dudes, there was a palpable frustration in the room watching that video and everyone went bonkers when you finally made it. I can’t remember the last time an internet video made me cheer in real life, thank you for this.
November 11, 2014 at 10:37 pm
So frustrating watching this video. It’s so obvious what you are doing wrong (pushing down when you are smashing the controller to hell so you move towards the bottom of the screen and miss the jump) I just wanted to dive into my screen and yell at both of you lol
November 12, 2014 at 5:26 am
I was stuck at the same part James was, though don’t have the means to properly go back and achieve victory. My crowning NES moment still remains beating Contra co-op without the Konami code around the age of 9.
November 12, 2014 at 1:19 pm
Turbo Tunnel is just a warm up for the rest of the game 😛 Anyone who’s taken the crusade knows this…
November 12, 2014 at 3:05 pm
Well Done James,I actually stood up and cheered when you finally made it at the end.
