Bride of Chucky (1998)

Mike Matei / October 23rd, 2014

The “so bad it’s good” movie from my generation. The killer doll Chucky is back, and more funny and likable than ever. See our review for the original Child’s Play here.

Insane is calling this movie ‘bad’. It’s fucking great.
Speaking of characterization, Seed Of Chucky fully realizes the characters and the whole damn movie is a beautiful family drama played out by puppets. You are literally watching a puppet show, but the characters are so fully fleshed out, you don’t notice they’re just puppets. Seed is also a film about love and acceptance. Every single character craves acceptance from someone and will try to overcome their addiction to get it.

Every film in this series (6 so far) is a masterpiece.

Gotta disagree with ya james my boy. I thought the original three movies were the best. Without Andy, i felt like this movie was just a bit off. Dont even get me started on seed of chucky! What a mess hahaha. Though i must admit watching seed and bride today actually are much more enjoyable than their original release in my humble opinion

Agreed. They get worse and worse (1 being the best) until Curse of Chucky which I’d say is more on par with 2/3 than 4/5.

I think james is going insane after 8 years of monster madness…

  • October 23, 2014 at 7:15 am

It is great to look back on these late 1990s horror movies now that nearly 15 years have passed since that time. Especially for me personally, it is great to see how much differently I view these films as an adult as opposed to my middle/high school self at the time. One noticeable feature is just the switch from 1960s to 1970s horror films, the films over the last 15 years seem to have such a harder edge to them. There is still a slight playfulness of the horror films of that time, due in part to the 1990s culture.

I don’t know, i never liked chucky, have to get really more creative to be “so bad it’s good” of your generation as you say.
That title goes to either Troll 2 or Anaconda, this was really boring for me, like every other chucky movie. I hope they stopped after this, i don’t even know. Meh.

Hmmm… I’m glad you said it took you many years to appreciate this film, ‘cuz as far as I’m concerned it might take me many centuries.
Plenty movies have used the theme of haunted dolls quite well, poltergeist’s Clown might be one of the best examples, but most of the time stupid little dolls in horror movies might be the limit of practical effects AND horror.
For whatever reason these little kermits walking around in clumsy ways always come in half comedic movies and that’s just boring as hell.
Most people I know who enjoy chucky can’t stand darker movies like Texas Chainsaw or Halloween and for this reason I think movies like Chucky aren’t really made for horror fans.

I love TCM. Halloween is my favorite movie! Still imma huge Chucky fan. Everybody’s different you can’t jus group us all up for liking a certain movie you don’t.

Man! Great review as always bu I thought you were going to do a Child’s Play Sequel-a-thon.
Oh well, there’s still Hellraiser, Maniac Cop, Candyman, The Hammer Mummy series, The Amityville series and the Friday 13th movies.

Feels like James might be wearing nostalgia googles a bit too tightly here, but I guess having Rob Zombie around does improve the watching at least a bit. 😉

I really don’t like either Bride or Chucky or Seed of Chucky at all and find them to be almost unwatchable (Seed of, in particular). Personally, I don’t find them funny. Childs Play 2 and 3 are far superior and more sincere. If you want your “bad movie” fix, check those out instead. You will laugh at the cheesiness but still feel like you are watching a bad horror movie and not some self-aware pandering cynical poorly-done spoof of Hollywood (which is exactly what Seed of Chucky is).
for good Chucky watch the original and then the recent Curse of Chucky movie. For goofy bad movie fun watch Child’s Play 2 and 3. Stay away from Bride and Seed though, they aren’t even good for a nostalgia fix despite what James is saying here. Usually I agree with James, but I really feel he is off base with this one

    • October 23, 2014 at 11:58 am

      curse of chucky was abysmal!

      • Joker83

        October 23, 2014 at 1:20 pm

Overall I liked it. It’s miles and miles above the Bride of Seed of garbage. But seriously if you want campy and funny horror watch Child’s play 2 and 3 instead.

  • October 23, 2014 at 10:37 am

For all of you who are saying that James has gone insane and or lost his marbles due to his opinion of the movie, just remember his love for the Universal Horror classics.

  • October 23, 2014 at 11:57 am

seriously I CANT be the only dude who’d tap the hell out of that doll?!?!?!

    What….. no one?

After you mentioned Brad Dourif already two times in this years Monster Madness I just friggin hope you do a review of DEATH MACHINE someday or even include it in this years Monster Madness Whatever-athon. i love this movie and Brad Dourifs outstanding perfomance in it as well as the Death Machine itself. Sure it´s far from the classical Monster movies and more of a modern day version of it, but along with Terminator, Screamers or Tremors it represents a new approach to Monster movies. Yes, I´d call the Terminator a monster movie, comparable to the Golem (1920), though it mixes in action, sci-fi, slasher and an apocalyptic scenario.
Just keep up the good work, James – you already introduced me to so many weird and obscure movie gems, I´m really grateful for that! (Go watch Aachi & Ssipak, it´s as obscure as it gets)

Hey James, don’t mean to sound like a crazy fanboy, but I sent you an email, and I’d just like a sign that you got it.

  • October 23, 2014 at 5:02 pm

Yeah, this movie is great. Probably one of the best 90’s slasher movie along with H20.

I disagree with James here, I prefer Child’s Play 2, in fact it’s my favourite of the series. And about Bride of Chucky, yea, it has more comedy but still has the spirit of the Chuky movies, I liked it a lot. But all turned into shit with the 5th movie, which is the worst crap I’ve ever seen, and make me feel sad for the franchise, watching how they ruined the series, in fact I was surprised when I noticed the director was Don Mancini himself, how could he ruin his creation so fucking bad? Fortunately things got a little better with Curse of Chucky, though I still think it’s not the same as before, something is missing.

Of all the Chucky movies, I find this one to be the most tolerable specifically because it’s more splatstick than horror.

  • October 24, 2014 at 2:31 am

after seeing this review….I have completely lost faith in James rolfes opinions of horror movies..shame…still love ya though.

Why? That’s part of being a horror fan. Learning to appreciate some of the shittier scary movies.

  • October 24, 2014 at 7:01 am

I always thought this movie was beyond cheesy. There are some cheap laughs, but not in a good way.

Big ups to James for reviewing this movie. I always felt like no one thought it was awesome as me and my sister did. All of the chucky movies actually. He’s just badass. A little kid’s doll that kicks serious ass. I agree with James, you end up laughing with this psycho and actually wanting to hang out with him. He’s def one one my favorite killers of all time.

I’d love to throat fuck that bride doll she is hot!

  • October 29, 2014 at 5:52 pm

I can’t believe that you didn’t show the very best scene in this movie; That dipship (forgot his name) getting hit by a truck. I replayed so many times on the VHS that scene in slow motion, trying to understand how did they manage to get that effect. xD

  • November 10, 2014 at 7:40 am

Well as you said is one of those movies that though they were made with poor script its really good made.

  • December 10, 2014 at 9:27 am

I loved this movie as a teenager because it was so hilariously awful. Dark comedies <3.

  • July 1, 2015 at 10:54 pm

I would love to see a reboot where the killer works at a Wax Figure Museum and he goes there before he dies and transfers his soul into a wax figure. He would switch bodies when close to death so you could have lots of famous actors play the killer in each movie.

What’s with James hating on Child’s Play 2? That one is my favorite of the series. But now I have to rewatch Bride Of Chucky. The newest one was ho-hum.
