Rodan (1956)

Mike Matei / October 14th, 2014

Time to add some kaiju action in this year’s Monster Madness. We’ve already taken care of Godzilla. Now let’s talk about another important monster from Toho.

Great review, was waiting for you to get to this!

  • October 14, 2014 at 8:09 am

I have seen many of the Godzilla movies, but not this one. Is it just me, or do there seem to be elements from this movie that made it into the 2014 Godzilla? We have the themes of the underground discovery, monsters in pairs, action piece on a suspension bridge, etc. Good review, can’t wait to check this one out.

    • October 14, 2014 at 8:10 am

Not that Rodan is a Godzilla movie. I was referring to Toho movies in general.

I was thinking the same thing. These Rodan monsters are essentially the Muto’s from Godzilla ’14. There are differences, but the overall design is the same. I’m shocked James or Mike never noticed it.

      • October 14, 2014 at 8:13 pm

Or at least I am surprised they did not mention it. Of course, they may have written this script before the movie even came out. I think James says he starts working on Monster Madness in March. I guess the writers of Godzilla ’14 are well versed in Toho movies. Mike or James, if you read this, comments?

The funny thing is that Roddan is Rod Stewart’s Swedish nickname.

In Stephen King’s book It the character Mike has a fear of birds and conjures It as a realistic version of Rodan. I would love to see James do a review of the book because It pays tribute to tons of classic monsters (and is way better than the TV movie.) Great job on this dude!

    Yay! Rodan!

There is an Asahi Beer Logo in the film, never was a fan really, but have it once & awhile. Looks alright, these movies I find are pretty long, although enjoyable in a sense. Like Asahi beer, never really got into them that much.

Does anyone else’s video freeze up for a second or two every 15 secods or so? Using Safari with a good Internet connection and everything is up to date.

It doesn’t matter if I’m streaming at HD or the very lowest setting.

    • October 14, 2014 at 4:12 pm

Not this one, but all the longer cinemassacre videos freeze and repeat the last second or two once or twice during viewing. It must be the video service they use.

No, it’s because their own servers are based in the U.S., so everyone outside of the U.S., or probably also people who are in the U.S. but is a long way from the east coast, are going to have some problems streaming the videos. Sometimes you get lucky and can watch the whole thing though 🙂

      • October 15, 2014 at 7:47 pm

I live on the east coast, not far at all from James and it happens to me

    • October 15, 2014 at 7:46 pm

this one was OK but a few of the others would freeze. Glad it not just me

    MONSTER MADNESS!!!!!!

    October 14, 2014 at 6:16 pm

Is it just me, or does that thunderclap in the intro to every video sound like a gunshot?

Glad to see some kaiju love this year! Your “Godzillathon” is probably my favorite Monster Madness ever!

  • October 14, 2014 at 6:25 pm

I’m surprised he didn’t mention the English dubbed version mentioning Rodan as “Radon”

  • October 14, 2014 at 7:49 pm

Rodan was good, but I seem to remember the stand alone film for Varan being really dull. Once Monster Madness is over I’d be interested to hear James’ opinion in other non-Godzilla Toho movies, like “Orochi: The 8 Headed Dragon”.

I bought this in a double feature pack with War of the Gargantuas, a movie I learned about from Monster Madness. It still holds up today as a classic, as does Gargantuas. The first part of Rodan sucked me in right away with the claustrophobic scenes in the mine. This is one of Toho’s best.

And they had a pretty harsh competions with other producers, you gotta have to feel the pressure when you make Rodan destroy a konbini named Gamera. I love it.

I still wonder that why U.S changed Its name as Rodan from Radon. Radon had came from pteRAnoDon, and it makes sense.

    Nice little clip. 🙂

  • August 4, 2015 at 12:57 am

I always think of the Rodan in the other movies as the Female. Maybe it’s cause the name seems feminine in English.

  • August 29, 2015 at 4:39 pm

for monster madness this year, do you plan on doing the phantasm films? i’d love to know.

  • January 31, 2016 at 3:27 pm

My wife loved this movie as a kid, so for her birthday I got her the Toho Master Collection DVD which also features War of the Gargantuas.

It was great to see the original uncut Japanese version, but we were both a little confused about the ending. The volcano erupts, and both Rodans just kinda lay down and die.

The cause of their death feels murky to us, and I’d love to hear people’s theories.

  • March 25, 2016 at 4:59 pm

How can you do rodan without mothra and varan

  • March 26, 2016 at 4:32 pm

How can you do this and not other Toho monster movies like Mothra and Varan the unbelievable

  • March 27, 2016 at 2:14 pm

Not to mention rebirth of mothra 1,2 and 3 and Frankenstein conquers the world and war of the gargantuas

  • March 27, 2016 at 2:55 pm

also the mysterians, the three treasures, Gorath, Atragon, Dogora, Latitude Zero and plenty of others which you can check on http://www.tohokingdom.com/genre_movie_lists/kaiju_listing.htm
