Night of the Creeps (1986)

Mike Matei / October 5th, 2014

An 80’s film that pays tribute to the 50’s. Alien slugs crawl into peoples’ heads and turn them into zombies.

Detective Cameron: I got good news and bad news, girls. The good news is your dates are here.
Sorority Sister: What’s the bad news?
      Detective Cameron: They’re dead.

No one ever mentions Shivers, possibly the first slug-zombie movie, when this and Slither are being discussed. It’s a David Cronenberg film.

One of the few movies I saw back then and never saw again.
‘Thrill me’, is that what the detective always said when picking up the phone? I saw it in german and he said: ‘Ich bin gespannt.’ I adapted that for a short period and confused the hell out of any caller.

I agree with slither being an 80s throwback but just felt there was way too much cg for me. I blame you for making me ultra aware of cg now. I can’t even watch jamanji anymore because of how bad the animals look haha. But seriously, slither was ok but the slug effects look terrible. HDTV only enhances the cartoony feel I you ask me. I prefer something the actor is actually able to interact with.

      October 5, 2014 at 10:13 am

what… What… WHAT!?! CG? In Slither?? There is maybe like 20% CG compared to 80% practical appliance. Slither is James Gunns first big break. A mix of horror and pitch black humor. It’s easily a cult classic already at only 14 yrs old.

      • October 5, 2014 at 10:25 am

Agreed, I always thought of Slither as a good throw back to practice effects

      • itscmillertime

        October 5, 2014 at 10:30 pm

        The slugs are not practical

      October 5, 2014 at 5:52 pm

Yes, the animals in Jumanji are a shining example of bad ‘CG’ in movies…

Watch the scene where they are all running out of the house. It looks terrible. The monkeys are pure cg.

        October 8, 2014 at 3:42 am

Ironically, given they came from a board game that is a tribute to the deep jungle genre, the CG animals might have enhanced the notion that they are from an artificial world created by the game. Not to mention that there were memorable practical effects like the spiders, the plants, and the crocodile.

Fred Dekker, not DRekker. Hehe. Awesome movie though.

The 80s did zombies better than the entire new millennium

  • October 5, 2014 at 9:18 am

i could have sworn James already did a review of this movie before… but I guess not cause i couldn’t find it anywhere on the site.. either way i remember hearing about this film not long ago from somewhere online and I think it was on TV not that long ago as well. it’s a bizarre but good film.

    Gonna watch it

  • October 5, 2014 at 12:27 pm

Will check this out. It seems like a nice Halloween spoof type movie in Australia. Also “It’s Miller time” is Legendary as here it came from the ghost busters.

Still your videos seems really short, and you seem to have to say a lot to say when doing a particular movie before you cut it off. Wanted to hear more from the horror nerd.

You know…this movie is about Aliens creating zombies,
This is a remake of Plan 9!
Great review, do ‘Body Bags’ next please.

I caught this movie on TV once and it was really fun to watch. I did not expect to be sooo gory but man, what a trip it was. Definitely a fun one to watch for any zombie fans out there.

    October 5, 2014 at 5:57 pm

When I was younger I thought this movie was better then Night of the living Dead. Not sure how it holds up now but back then the idea of a slug killing your brain and taking over your body was a scary thought. They should remake this movie.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It balances comedy, drama and horror perfectly. The effects are amazing and the acting is great. And if you’re a horror fan in general, it’s very rewarding to catch all the references. This is a must see!

    Oh, and Stryper Rules!

  • October 5, 2014 at 6:46 pm

I can’t watch any Videos on Cinemassacre anymore (for 2 days now).

When I click the play button, the following mesage appears:

“Error loading stream: Manifest not found or invalid”

I already tried Firefox in save mode, and the Internet Explorer, but the same error occures in every situation.

All plugins and system drivers are up to date. (Win 7, 64 bit.)

I don’t have those problems anywhere else.

Any suggestions? I would be grateful!

I have heard of this movie, but I never knew anything about it. It looks hilarious! I always enjoy learning about movies I didn’t know much abut or have never heard of. Thanks yet again, James.

  • October 5, 2014 at 7:47 pm

    I frikkin LOVE this movie!

I also think that as far as zombies go, it’s one of the only explanations for re-animation that makes any sense. Think about it, a intelligent slug shocking the brain in all the right places could “drive” a person. It also explains away all the zombie non-sense like why they don’t need to breathe, or can still move after being fatally wounded and the whole stab the brain to kill it thing.

On the other hand a virus doesn’t explain any of that, especially the kill the brain bit considering it’s well documented that people can move about with serious brain injuries.

Never saw this one but heard about it.
I will definitely check it out now now.
The comparison between the alien and AVGN is awesome. It is quite the resemblance , lol.

james have you ever caught the line that fred dekker used again in monster squad? when the corpse is missing the main guy’s like 30yr old dead guys don’t just get up and walk out. and then a year later in monster squad, which is the best movie of all time, when the mummy is missing the detective says something like 2000yr old dead guys don’t just get up and walk out. ha I loved that when I realized it as a kid b/c monster squad I watched all the time and when I finally got around to night of the creeps yrs later I was like oh fred dekker you bastid.

  • October 17, 2014 at 4:28 am

This movie is soo damn good. I can’t wait for monster madness this year so im watching all the old ones. Night of the Creeps is definetly under rated though. It was one of my favorites as a kid and still is I watch it about once a month or so.
