Mike Matei / October 1st, 2014
This year’s Monster Madness kicks off with Cabin in the Woods, a cliche horror archetype with unique twists.
October 1, 2014 at 3:02 am
I knew you would choose this one but didnt know youd do it first
I thought nosferatu would be first lol
October 1, 2014 at 12:12 pm
youd <— Learn to spell!
October 1, 2014 at 3:24 pm
oh boy you really got me on that one!
I forgot an apostrophe and your comment totally contributed so much!
October 1, 2014 at 3:25 pm
get over yourself
October 4, 2014 at 11:13 am
There is a huge difference between a typo and just not knowing how to spell a word. Comments sections are extremely informal and it’s not necessary to correct someone’s spelling especially just to get your comment second.
April 14, 2015 at 10:51 pm
He did spell it right. However, the grammar was incorrect. Learn how to correct you 5lut.

October 14, 2014 at 3:16 pm
He’s done Nosferatu twice already 🙂
OK this one is good
October 1, 2014 at 3:03 am
I was expecting some thing classic but i see what you did here
I’m so excited for monster madness!! How crazy I just watched cabin in the woods again yesterday I love it!
October 1, 2014 at 3:54 pm
Yeah it’s great! I just watched the movie myself last weekend.
October 1, 2014 at 3:09 am
Great review! This film is awesome!
October 1, 2014 at 3:13 am
This i’m gonna watch, i mean it’s written and directed by Joss Whedon, he rarely goes wrong and it seems like you said anything and nothing about this movie. Great start!
October 1, 2014 at 6:40 am
It’s not directed by Joss Whedon.
October 1, 2014 at 10:47 am
it was directed by Drew Goddard.
October 1, 2014 at 7:46 pm
Joss Co-Wrote and Produced it. Drew Goddard directed it.
October 1, 2014 at 8:02 pm
Wow, I realised I am late to the party haha!

October 2, 2014 at 1:10 pm
It’s directed by Drew Goddard. Joss Whedon co-wrote the script and produced.
October 1, 2014 at 3:53 am
i love that there are so mayn characters in the boxes…
even the boomer from left for dead games
(2:34 right next to the center)
and that it takes the twist when it becomes more of a action or thriller movie with some splatter and gore
October 1, 2014 at 3:54 am
October 1, 2014 at 3:55 am
I’m so excited. October and Halloween just isn’t really it without monster madness.
October 1, 2014 at 4:05 am
It’s funny doing a marathon of MM, and watching the production values go up every year.
October 1, 2014 at 4:13 am
Great review, I just hope that future videos this month will be longer than 3 minutes. I don’t expect a full fledged 10 minutes but I guess i’m just a little over excited. Monster Madness only comes once a year and I want as much as I can get.
October 1, 2014 at 4:28 am
Didn’t care for this movie. Though the concept was really promising.
October 1, 2014 at 4:34 am
I just don’t understand why people like that movie. I just don’t.
October 4, 2014 at 4:10 am
Because it’s clever and makes itself a joke on purpose. They weren’t trying to make a horror movie that takes itself too seriously like many others that end up being goofy and stupid.
October 1, 2014 at 5:45 am
Love this movie!
October 1, 2014 at 5:48 am
October 1, 2014 at 6:07 am
You took that spoiler alert seriously. Respect.
October 1, 2014 at 6:24 am
YESS!!!! MONSTERRRRR MADNESSS!!! I fucking *live* for this every year!! I’m so stoked!! And what a great movie to start with, right? I liked Cabin in the Woods, it was like a love letter to horror enthusiasts everywhere.
October 1, 2014 at 6:32 am
Great definition, hahaha!
October 1, 2014 at 6:31 am
One of my favorites horror movies of the last few years. Great start!
October 1, 2014 at 7:17 am
So what’s the theme this year? Modern horror?
October 1, 2014 at 2:17 pm
There is no theme this year so it can be anything (doesn’t even have to be a movie but can be a TV show as well), have you not watched the promo?
October 1, 2014 at 2:20 pm
It’s anything goes.
October 1, 2014 at 7:52 am
My cousin’s ex worked on this movie.
October 1, 2014 at 7:54 am
So glad Monster Madness is here!
October 1, 2014 at 8:05 am
Watching MM has become one of my traditions for my favorite holidays. Cannot express how excited I am! Also, Ive watched the entire SNIX series and loved it. ↑↑↓↓←→←→ⒷⒶ
October 1, 2014 at 8:07 am
Woohoo its finally here 🙂
October 1, 2014 at 8:13 am
Sweet, October has officially begun. I just watched Cabin in the Woods recently; I thought it was so-so. I have a thing about movies being too self aware and meta (Scream, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, etc.). Yes, I get that I’m watching a movie, and I’m aware of the genre tropes… let’s go from there. It was entertaing for what it was, though.
October 1, 2014 at 8:16 am
I didn’t really get the point of this review? As a someone who’s seen this film, just telling me the plot after the spoiler alert isn’t really intriguing or insightful. I’d like to know more about what you think of these films, not just imdb plot summaries.
Love your monster madness series, but this entry is sorta weak.
October 1, 2014 at 8:38 am
My sister saw this movie
Yes! I love Monster Madness and look forward to it every year. Thank you so much for everything you do James and Mike!
October 1, 2014 at 8:53 am
October 1, 2014 at 9:02 am
IT’S CINEMASSACRE’S MOOOOOOOOOOOOONSTER MADNESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!
October 1, 2014 at 9:04 am
Sadly James has completely misread the plot. It wasn’t a science experiment by rather an undercover global agency whose sole purpose was to sacrifice the said sterotypes in a particular order to sate the Old Gods and keep them from rising.
This movie was highly under rated because it was self aware and didn’t share much of the horror moments you would see in other typical movies. But the plot is a lot more deeper then killing off and spilling blood but the end makes up for all of that, I mean if you ever wanted to see a whole pantheon of famous monster types go into a blood frenzy against armed soldiers and unarmed scientists scream as they are torn to shreds watch this movie.
But if you want to see you a movie that really gives fright then this isn’t the movie for you
October 1, 2014 at 10:41 am
Yes I know that. That’s the ending. I don’t have to give EVERYTHING away, do I?
October 1, 2014 at 1:28 pm
It’s dope you read comments. On behalf of everyone thanks for taking time from your family life and making another Monster Madness. It’s a Halloween tradition 4 me and my bro now.
October 1, 2014 at 11:09 am
October 2, 2014 at 7:06 pm
So youre THAT guy huh?
October 1, 2014 at 9:18 am
October 1, 2014 at 9:28 am
This is quite the movie to start with. I’m excited for what else is coming this month. Let’s get to it! It’s Cinemassacre’s, MONSTER MADNESS!!!
October 1, 2014 at 9:35 am
i dont like a horror movie that makes fun of the genre a horror movie must be always original i didn t like Cabin in the Woods
I guess you don’t like Scream because that had the same kind of concept going for it.
October 1, 2014 at 9:44 am
Feels strange not going chronologically, but I don’t mind. Nice review, though you could’ve mentioned the big ancient gods they were trying to sacrifice the teens to–representative of the audience? 😉
October 1, 2014 at 9:54 am
Also, I know this is essentially random-athon but I cannot BELIEVE you’re going out of order chronologically…
October 1, 2014 at 10:46 am
I liked cabin in the woods because of how different it actually was. Scary? Absolutely not. But it was fun. James you should review VHS. It has a little bit of everything in it.
October 1, 2014 at 11:08 am
VHS was horrendous and simple found footage crap
October 1, 2014 at 10:50 am
You forgot to mention some of the most memorable moments like the merman creature with it’s blood spilled out of it’s back.
October 1, 2014 at 7:37 pm
btw I can’t believe that the number one of the monster madness prediction has been reviewed 🙂
October 1, 2014 at 11:17 am
Oh, it’s this time of the year ahain 🙂
October 1, 2014 at 11:52 am
October 1, 2014 at 12:00 pm
I hope you would have talked about the ending. I think the ending is so bad it ruins the whole movie. Who saw the movie knows what I’m talking about.
October 1, 2014 at 12:16 pm
I was honestly expecting better coverage of this movie. It’s one of those things that’s so bad that it’s good.
More over not even better coverage, but just more coverage. I know there isn’t a whole lot to talk about in this movie, but there’s more than a 3 minute summary.
October 1, 2014 at 12:25 pm
I love this movie, too, James. ESPECIALLY the fuckstorm climax.
As a horror fan I LOVED this movie and I’m glad to see James liked it too. It’s so much fun trying to find all the nods to other horror movies and even games in the movie. I’ve always loved Joss Whedon (who wrote this along with director Drew Goddard) because you can always tell he’s a huge fan of the genre or subject he’s writing about.
I can’t wait to see what’s next for the Whatever-the-hell-you-want-to-call-it-athon.
October 1, 2014 at 12:29 pm
Glad this was not another “-athon” and just “Monster Madness 8”
October 1, 2014 at 12:34 pm
So happy to have Monster Madness back!
OH YEAH ! Monster Madness back again THE BEST MONTH OF THE YEAR !!!! Nice review good movie different for this type of horror movie but not one of the greatest !
October 1, 2014 at 12:39 pm
Seems like an awesome movie to me! Thanks for the introduction!
October 1, 2014 at 1:03 pm
i am so excited!!!!!! i wait for this with more anticipation every year than my birthday or christmas. thank you for still doing this even though you are super busy. loved it!!
October 1, 2014 at 1:15 pm
My favorite part is when Hemsworth makes the impassioned “I’ll bring back help” speech, then runs right into the invisible wall.
October 1, 2014 at 1:25 pm
Honestly the first time I saw it I didn’t really dig it. Especially the ending. Then I realized I was thinking about it 2 seriously. It’s meant 2 b watched loose. It’s fun and entertaining movie with a totally different concept of Horror. It’s worth watching and like James said the Scientists are fucking hilarious.
October 1, 2014 at 1:42 pm
James did you watch this movie?
They’re not scientists and the victims aren’t guinea pigs. They’re sacrifices for a ritual so that a nasty god wouldn’t destroy the planet.
October 1, 2014 at 2:25 pm
little short but I kinda expected it since their will be a new one daily. Anyways, I look forward to whats next.
October 1, 2014 at 2:55 pm
Dude, that movie sucks. It is disrespectful, childish and a dishonor to the genre.
And it is not a scientific experiment it is a pagan sacrifice machine. Very cynical subtext.
October 1, 2014 at 3:29 pm
That one part with all the glass holding cages is one where you just have to rewind over and over again because you always notice something new each time. I can’t believe I didn’t see it before, but that’s seriously a Boomer from Left 4 Dead in there.
October 1, 2014 at 4:01 pm
Thanks for the spoiler alert James, but therein lies the problem. The reason I never saw this movie and probably never would have is because it advertised itself as just another cliche cabin-in-the-woods type movie full of stock characters. I’ve seen enough of those already, in face “Cabin Fever” was one too many. If I’d have had a hint that there was more going on this movie I might have bothered to check it out, because it looks pretty cool. I imagine it was hard to market because if they give away the secret then they give away everything. If they don’t, then it looks just like the run of the mill dreck they are mocking.
October 1, 2014 at 4:02 pm
October 1, 2014 at 4:15 pm
James apparently didn’t pay much attention. The people in the underground facility are not scientists, they are not running an experiment and the 5 people in the cabin are not guinea pigs. They are being sacrificed in a ritual to prevent the ancient ones (think H.P. Lovecraft) from awakening and annihilate humanity.
October 1, 2014 at 7:00 pm
This is true.
October 1, 2014 at 4:20 pm
yea here we go
October 1, 2014 at 4:29 pm
My second favourite film, after ‘Aliens’ (and the rest of that franchise [Prometheus not included]. I count them all as my favourite film/s).
October 1, 2014 at 4:44 pm
Maybe you should have done a different movie first. Having to stop the first video due to spoilers was a little disappointing.
October 1, 2014 at 6:03 pm
I really liked this movie personally. It’s fun, unique, has a different kind of mystery and intensity towards the end, and satisfies any gore hound. One of the coolest horror movies in the 2010s in my opinion.

October 1, 2014 at 7:16 pm
I never thought of it as a science experiment, but rather the director’s of the horror movies. After all, they’re basically saying the horror movies we watch are real since they show monsters from movies that we know of. Other than that, good review.
I don’t know if James was just trying to be vague to not ruin some of the actual elements (since he already said spoiler I don’t see why he would) or he misunderstood some of the elements of the film. Some Spoilers here. It wasn’t an experiment and they weren’t all scientists. It was an annual sacrifice use to appease ancient “gods” who were representations of the horror audiences. The kids didn’t fit the molds at first especially Hemsworth and his Girlfriend. He was a jock but was hinted at the beginning to be quite intelligent and his girlfriend wasn’t promiscuous. The techs below them used gases to influence their behaviors to make them fit the stereotypes to further appease the gods.
October 1, 2014 at 8:00 pm
Yes, it is actually ritual sacrifice, not an experiment.
October 4, 2014 at 11:09 am
Other than the sequel-a-thons, James usually doesn’t give away the endings.
One of my favourites and I love how smart it is!
October 1, 2014 at 8:40 pm
Woohoo! Monster Madness 2014! Ten pages of comments in one day!
October 1, 2014 at 9:20 pm
Yeah, good movie. a lot better than I thought it was going to be, anyway. The scenes with the technicians were hilarious.
October 1, 2014 at 9:32 pm
awesome, MONSTER MADDNESS! is finally here again.
October 1, 2014 at 10:33 pm
😀 Just place Truman show with ehem Boo Hounted house and you got this.
October 2, 2014 at 12:06 am
I went into this movie with extremely low expectations, but the movie won me over. I agree with James; the scientists make the movie (literally and figuratively). This was an interesting addition into the Monster Madness series, James. I don’t know why, but I never expected to see it reviewed here. Now, I kind of want to watch it again.
October 2, 2014 at 1:23 am
One of my favorite movies. Too bad James review is so short, there’s quite a lot more to the movie than that.
October 2, 2014 at 1:41 am
I enjoyed this one…up until the ending. I hate movies that play up an outrageous but somehow plausible premise, but then kill off the human race in the end. A similar twist killed the entire Terminator series for me. Pity. I was actually enjoying Cabin in the Woods up till that happened.
October 2, 2014 at 2:52 am
Love this film. Interesting first choice, James!
October 2, 2014 at 4:29 am
Paused it at the ‘Spoiler Alert!’ and watched the movie really quick, before finishing the review.
Some crazy lovecraftian shit here! Great flick/recommendation.
Look forward to more!
October 2, 2014 at 9:30 am
Can’t believe October is finally here. Good pick. Have this movie on blu, hope to see Just Before Dawn this Monster Madness
October 2, 2014 at 10:17 am
I love that movie
October 2, 2014 at 11:39 am
You got part of the plot wrong in your review. The kids were NOT part of an experiment. I won’t spoil it here but there was a specific reason why what was being done to them was being done.
October 4, 2014 at 11:06 am
James intentionally didn’t give away the ending, he already addressed this in another similar comment.
October 2, 2014 at 2:16 pm
OH!!!! let the games begins lol!!!!
