James / September 2nd, 2014

The AVGN Movie makes its internet debut on Vimeo!

Follow the link for all the details, such as renting and buying options.

https://vimeo.com/ondemand/avgn

We are looking into additional outlets for online distribution, but all the others take much longer to process. In the future, we expect to have the movie available on some other sites too.

Also, the DVD/Blu-ray is in production. It will include a feature-length Behind-The-Scenes documentary, outtakes, deleted/extended scenes, a commentary track, some surprises, and the feature movie in 5.1 surround sound. We expect to have it ready by November/December.

    MAke it for free please!

    • September 2, 2014 at 12:28 pm

I mean, its not that i dont wanna pay but its my birthday hahaha

      • September 2, 2014 at 12:29 pm

By the way, this must be in facta very special day for me, my birthday and im the first to comment? Wow, thats a hell of a coincidence!

      • September 2, 2014 at 12:59 pm

Happy birthday my friend, now it’s time to STFU and rent it if you want to see it. It takes times and money to make a movie… It’s the least you can do, give him something for the fun you will have when you will watch it.

      • September 2, 2014 at 3:48 pm

someone get this poor soul some bucks

      • GuardianAuron

        September 2, 2014 at 4:44 pm

Lol Patrice… I am not insinuating that the movie should be free, because I will be gladly paying to see it. HOWEVER… Let’s remember who actually paid to have the movie made. WE DID. And now we get to pay for it again.

Let the money ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL in. Donald Trump is envious of the level of greed.

      • George Bush

        September 2, 2014 at 7:27 pm

@GuardianAuron He didn’t profit whatsoever off of the donations for the movie; he actually used them for the budget and most likely spent more than he received.

      • GuardianAuron

        September 3, 2014 at 1:43 am

@George I never insinuated he profited off the donations at all. I mean, none of us here can say definitively what happened to the $325,000 other than the government taking a large portion of it. But again, that wasn’t my point anyway. We… Paid for the movie. Fact.

      • Cyberxion

        September 3, 2014 at 2:48 am

        @GuardianAuron

You paid to finance the movie. That much was made clear from the start, man. If it wasn’t, the fact that none of the donation tiers included a copy should have tipped you off.

Seems to me like your disappointment is your own fault.

      • Lukas Sprehn

        September 3, 2014 at 3:45 am

@GuardianAuron Actually it was said that IndieGoGo took a chunk off the money as a fee, then PayPal did the same, and then Uncle Sam took a chunk as income tax, resulting in a little under 300,000 dollars. I believe Kevin Finn and Sean Keegan said this during a video about crowdfunding on YouTube.

      • September 3, 2014 at 11:17 am

I guess since Ashens did this with his movie, I don’t really see why this movie can’t have a free YouTube version.

      • GuardianAuron

        September 3, 2014 at 2:15 pm

Yup, that’s exactly what I am saying Cyber. You like.. Re-worded what I said and acted like it’s supposed to be some kind of epiphany. ha.

Patrice said we should all STFU and give James something for watching the movie because it takes time and money to make it…

Well, it was our money that made it. lol.

That’s all I was saying. I have already paid for the movie. Twice actually now. Lol. *shrug*

      • September 3, 2014 at 3:36 pm

Throw a fuckin oak stake at your screen and the movie will be free.

      • September 4, 2014 at 7:37 am

Think of it this way. If you go to the store and buy all new flooring for your house, it doesn’t automatically appear on the floors of your home. You still need to pay someone to install it. Your initial investment helped buy the flooring, but all that money went to making the movie. There is still a lot of money required to finish the project like creating the hard copies of the film and shipping it out, etc. And James can’t be expected to foot the bill for that.

      • September 5, 2014 at 1:04 am

Ashens movie was part funded by The Multiverse! (I believe he is a partner with them) This is $9.99 (about £6.40 here) it is worth every penny!
I’ve seen it out in the wild on various sites…. I only wish it would have had a UK cinema release as this EPIC movie deserves the big screen treatment!
Just buy it! James deserves the money as it’[s a great movie and a fantastic stand alone piece… there are nods to the fans but it is in it’s own universe that stands alone from the web series…… BUY IT! my daughter is here tonight (she’s 9) and shes gonna watch it with me (will be my 5th time)

      • September 5, 2014 at 10:42 pm

If James had actually made a profit off the movie, that would’ve been fine with me. He’s certainly earned success already.

      • September 7, 2014 at 5:33 am

The movie wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for us, that much is true. But there’s a difference between contributing and seeing a movie. I feel like everyone already knew that they’d have to pay to see the movie, it was never put in as any perk. But that completely aside, as a producer myself (didn’t make anything yet aside school projects), i know how much time and effort goes into making a movie, let alone money. I’m sure he used all of the money put into the movie from the indiegogo campaign, and a lot of his own funds as well. Don’t forget how much you need to pay for; costumes, locations, figurines, actors, sound crew, film crew, everything and everyone will need a pay of some sorts. As James also indicated himself, this movie has been 4 years of his life, that flew by in 2 hours. If i’d spend 4 years producing something, I’d want to see something for it in return as well. I’m also not one to bicker over 10 dollars to own a 2 hour long nerd movie. After seeing it, i’d say money well spend. That aside, I loved the movie, it had some hilarious moments that really made me laugh out loud!

nice try “first commenter” you aren’t fooling anyone.

      • September 3, 2014 at 5:03 am

I dont know what you mean by that and i dont give a shit either. Anyway, its great to have the movie being released on my birthday and on top of that being the first commenter. I usually dont give a shit about that but today i do because its special. Thansk for your good wishes patricia.

James you should be selling your film on a gaming site:

      http://www.gog.com/movies

      • September 4, 2014 at 10:23 am

I said it too and its right where it should be really. With good OLD games :)

I came specifically to say this as well! James, get this movie on gog.com

    • denguri

      September 4, 2014 at 5:39 am

Don’t. I’m a huge fan of web series, watched everything ~5 times at least, but the movie.. oh god. It sucks. It only uses jokes from series, and other “new” jokes aren’t funny at all. The idea had a potential, but overall…. 2/10 only because I like nerd.

  • September 2, 2014 at 12:41 pm

Awesome! just grabbed it. Wife and I will watch tonight

    • September 2, 2014 at 10:24 pm

Wife and I both enjoyed it! Without spoiling, the references were brilliant and funny. You can tell a lot of work went into this film. Thanks for all you do Cinemassacre.

Got it, now just gotta wait for the download to finish…

  • September 2, 2014 at 12:43 pm

Could someone please tell me what file format and resolution the Vimeo On-Demand download is?

    • Tim Harrod

      September 2, 2014 at 12:48 pm

      .mp4, 1280×720

      • September 2, 2014 at 12:53 pm

        Thank you.

      • Lukas Sprehn

        September 2, 2014 at 1:14 pm

Huh. Why only 720p? Is it because James wants to save 1080p for the Blu-ray?

      • Cyberxion

        September 3, 2014 at 2:49 am

        @Lukas Sprehn

I believe that he mentioned in the last update video that he had to bring the file size down in order to get it online, so I’m gonna guess that’s why.

      • Lukas Sprehn

        September 3, 2014 at 3:43 am

@Cyberxon Yes I know that he said that, but the thing is that on Vimeo you do not have to do that. You can upload any file size. It does not matter. You can even add the option for people to download the original video file used when uploading, so if you upload a 4k video, it will stream in 1080p, but you can download the original 4k version.

    • Melissa Gallagher

      September 6, 2014 at 12:21 am

The only one of my many players that would play the movie is Realplayer. I was suprised but Divx and Nero showtime wouldn’t run it.

    • October 23, 2014 at 4:23 pm

Since I’m more of DVD and ITunes guy I can’t say anything about Vimeo On-Demand; but I can say this since I don’t use Netficks I don’t know know the Handel inde movies but As an Hulu Plus user I can say that YES they do offer hosting for inde movies for an fee on top of your Hulu Plus substitution; Yes you need Hulu Plus for them to host your movie unless they set-up an new rule since then.

  • September 2, 2014 at 12:53 pm

Will it be coming out on DVD/Blu-Ray here in the UK at all

    • September 2, 2014 at 6:45 pm

Whatever gives you that impression? I’m sure this one will be as widely released as the other 7 DVDs.

    • September 24, 2014 at 8:03 pm

If it’s region free just buy it no issues at all. Blu-ray doesn’t have that much of an issue since over 90% of Blu-rays region free and have NTSC TV, NTSC Japan, Pal A, and Pal B versions on the same disk. Making it an better choice if your something like an Aime fan or an Pod-caster since you can save alot money by just making 1 disk vs having to make 2 one for NTSC and one for Pal. You can do that on an DVD-R but lowers the time offered for the video. Form it’s max of 8 hours preside to about 4 to 2 hours preside.

    September 2, 2014 at 1:04 pm

Do James and the rest of the crew get a decent cut from Vimeo? I would love to buy this movie, but I’d like my money to go to the actual moviemakers, at least as much as possible.

    • Tim Harrod

      September 2, 2014 at 1:15 pm

Vimeo On Demand boasts that the creators get 90% of the revenue left after transaction costs.

      • September 5, 2014 at 10:48 pm

I was wondering exactly how much of the sales go to the film maker. That’s awesome that he gets 90%. He earned it.

  • September 2, 2014 at 1:06 pm

Vimeo can’t keep up with the demand.

    Technical Difficulties

This video cannot be downloaded any more right now, please try again later.

  • September 2, 2014 at 1:06 pm

I can’t watch it on Vimeo, because i can’t pay via PayPal nor credit card. :(

    • jasonjrf

      September 2, 2014 at 4:51 pm

go to the store and get a visa gift card. Why post on here that you cant watch it on vimeo because you cant pay via credit card??? You can pay with credit card your just too lazy

  • Lance

    September 2, 2014 at 1:06 pm

YES!! Is there going to be a way we can pre-order the DVD/Bluray, or will it have to wait until it’s finished to order?

  • September 2, 2014 at 1:08 pm

Although I could be wrong, the rent or buy options could keep it more novel if you ever think of releasing these for DVD or Bluray

  • Sniffie

    September 2, 2014 at 1:12 pm

very dissapointed that there is a charge to watch a movie made of donations…

and besides all countries cant use paypal, this is a disaster

        September 2, 2014 at 4:57 pm

OMG dude your a retard these last few posts. Saying fans got gyped. WTF go to the store and get a pre paid credit card. Or wait till it’s on DVD Blue Ray and buy it that way. You say the Credit card is your issue then two posts later you bitch about how it should be free to those who donated. Make up your mind about why you cant watch it. The truth is you can watch it, you just expect everything to be free grow up stop complaining like a lil bitch and buy the fucking movie. All the proceeds from kickstarter or indigogo whatever were put into making the movie. Now it’s time to make money off his year or two of fucking hard work that someone like you will never be able to understand because all you do is sit in your basement bitching on the net. You will never understand the long hours and dedication it takes to make a movie like this or any movie and complete an indie film and get it released as fast as James did. Some indie movies take years after debuting in theater and his was a couple months. Jesus fucking christ the nerve of some people

      • Sniffie

        September 3, 2014 at 8:39 am

yeah… your the one going apeshit before even finish reading my post.

        sponsorship, advertisement, netflix etc lol

    • Lukas Sprehn

      September 2, 2014 at 1:15 pm

People still don’t get that the fundraiser was to produce the film and not pre-order it? The IndieGoGo.com page didn’t even say anything about getting a copy of the film, so even if people think this is BS, there really isn’t anythign for you people to complain about, since everything was made clear up front.

      • Sniffie

        September 2, 2014 at 1:27 pm

i didnt expect anything when i donated for this movie to hit the big screen, but as he has been talking about everyone being able to watch the movie and being thankfull for the fans to make his dream come true or whatever it was pretty much for granted that it would be free of charge… now alot of people that cant use a credit card will miss out after all, and i dont think thats fair to the community.
when he does this shit for a living, and the product is made out of his own budget, i will gladly pay whatever he demands…

    • Lukas Sprehn

      September 2, 2014 at 1:16 pm

Also, you don’t have to use PayPal. You can just pay directly with a credit card.

    • George Bush

      September 2, 2014 at 7:35 pm

The donations didn’t magically make the film by themselves. It took 4 years of hard work on James’s part and that’s easily work the price of download to support him.

      • Lukas Sprehn

        September 2, 2014 at 7:55 pm

8 years if you count the writing and pre-production…

    • September 3, 2014 at 12:37 am

You do realize that time + money, im pretty sure he stiull own money to the bank and what not. When you donated it was never mentioned that it was for free. So STFU and buy a prepaid credit card no need of paypal.

If you purchase the film from vimeo, is it DRM free?

    • Lukas Sprehn

      September 2, 2014 at 4:11 pm

      Yep :)

    • Bohtwhap

      September 2, 2014 at 10:07 pm

Yes, there is no DRM. Appearently, Vimeo does not use DRM at all. It said so somewhere in the help section. Under “buying VOD” or something, but I don’t have the link anymore.

  • Bohtwhap

    September 2, 2014 at 1:18 pm

Finally! It’s finally happening. It’s very rare that anything gets me excited, but I have actually been pumped for the AVGN Movie.

  • September 2, 2014 at 1:22 pm

Bought! Finally can watch this in the UK!

  • September 2, 2014 at 1:29 pm

I am desperately waiting for the Blu-ray release.

  • September 2, 2014 at 1:33 pm

I debated a rental until the Bluray becomes available….. then I realized that was stupid.

Now my question is this. Will you guys offer up some autographed copies of the Bluray?

This movie is most likely going to be in the top 2 best movies released this year!

  • September 2, 2014 at 1:39 pm

Already bought any chance will be Spanish Subtitles? Thx James and team!

  • Nathan Graves

    September 2, 2014 at 1:42 pm

    Dear James R.
I have been an AVGN fan since 2006. Im only 26 mins into the film so far but I must say AMAZING job by everyone! I was a little leery about a 2 hour movie about the AVGN. Would it work? Would it be entertaining? Just finished the dream sequence and Im glad to say my thoughts before were unfounded. This is a great low budget movie (not even unintentionally bad!). The special effects have been great, all the made up video games, cover, signs, background stuff, this is BETTER than I imagined it. I just want to say CONGRATULATIONS on this movie, it works. Your hard work has paid off. I can’t wait to finish it and buy my own physical copy when they become avalible. FUCKING LOVE IT! Thanks for making it and tanks for doing it right.

I am going to look into getting the Vimeo version, but I don’t have a computer at home (just an iPad) so might have to just wait until the Blu-ray.

    September 2, 2014 at 2:15 pm

Finished watching it, and it was amazing! A bit slow in the middle, but hell breaks loose soon after that, so everything’s good! Well worth the money! I’ll pick it up on disc as soon as I can! :)

  • September 2, 2014 at 2:22 pm

Stop complaining that its not free. He’s given you over 100 episodes for free. Its called showing some support. James is a filmmaker. He needs to feed his family.

  • Jacob Peacock

    September 2, 2014 at 2:24 pm

I bought on vimeo and plan to buy the blu-ray too for the special features. Great job James!

I’ve just finished watching the movie. Was all the wait worth the result? Hell yes! =D
It was enjoyable all the way trough and it fully presented the charm all the cinemassacre productions have. Huge thanks to everyone involved, I am gratefull that I’m part of the fanbase ♥

  • September 2, 2014 at 3:32 pm

    Just finished looking the film
two words : FUCKING AWESOME !
It’s not a high budget film but it’s fun i would like to have a version with subtitles (english ones). But it was WAY worth 5$.

You shown that you had great filming skills even if some was a bit cheesy, but i hope it will help you go bigger, way bigger. And as your film says always care for your fans even if they can take care of themselves.

  • September 2, 2014 at 3:45 pm

  • September 2, 2014 at 4:48 pm

Amazing job with the movie James! I’m proud to be a longtime fan of AVGN and Cinemassacre. This release was an even greater fulfillment than I expected. Thanks for pumping out the greatest shit on the internet!

  • September 2, 2014 at 4:51 pm

Just finished watching, and I’m amazed by the production values. The team really nailed the visual effects in all styles; I especially enjoyed the model work, reminiscent of the movies many a kid including me and my brother shot… using plenty of fireworks of course! ;-)

All and all, it was definitely the AVGN everybody is hoping for and is mostly managed to surpass the grossly inflated expectations that’ve been building over the years. Even the new characters seemed fitting to the sort of B-movie atmosphere you were going for. Loved the cameos, the shoutouts to classic movies and all the cliches you could cram in!

Extra shoutout to Bear’s _excellent_ work on the soundtrack.

Looking forward to new episodes, and seeing this pop up as a sort of weird cultish indie movie in the coming decades… and of course, the bonus features in the near future!

Thanks for the ride, and this is the first time in almost 8 years that I’ve come out of lurking on cinemassacre.com… thought this would be a good occasion for that, being a daily reader and all!

YeeaahH! I saw the movie in New York and thought it was hilarious, I’ll definitely wait for the blu-ray to see it again for the 5.1 mix!

  • September 2, 2014 at 5:18 pm

I have never been so excited to watch the credits of a movie my entire life. To the very end this movie was something original and I’ll be ready with my shovel to bury the next best… or worst thing that will spawn another masterpiece from the legendary James Rolfe.

  • September 2, 2014 at 5:23 pm

So happy the masses can watch it. My internet sucks so I’ll wait for the Blu-Ray.

    Hello Mr. Rolfe!
I’ve followed your reviews since early 2008. This is the first time I register an account and post a comment – ever. Not even on Youtube. Shame on me.
I’ve been avoiding to see/hear anything about the game since you announced it will be in this the movie.

I just saw it via Vimeo.
Don’t know what to write, totally blank right now…

…Thank you for all the great reviews over the past years.
    I love your work, James.

Me to.Was okay. The beginning was good,I thought the some ofthe movie dragged on.I thought the review was more of James doing the review,Than avgn. Also kinda short.I was surprised that avgn and Mandy didnt hook up.

I thought it was a great movie but I agree that well I did laugh a lot I didn’t die laughin that much or at least as much as I do in his reuses. Yet I do agree it should prob be watched with a group not just a lonely kid on his computer lol. And I was also shocked they didn’t hook up as well… Overall still radical tho…

The Angry Video Game Nerd the Movie review
Five years. It’s been five years since Angry Video Game Nerd fans were first gifted with the knowledge that James Rolfe, the Angry Video Game Nerd, would make a feature length film starring his seminal internet sensation. And today fans who missed their chances at a theatrical screening were given the chance to get the digital release of this film. So did it live up to five years of anticipation? Yeah. Yeah it kinda did. I mean, I tried to keep my expectations at a minimum considering that this was an incredibly low budget film and was very much a celebration of those old rubber suit monster movies. And in that regard, it succeeded in being absolutely insane. The miniatures were often incredibly obvious (especially the vehicles) and that was all part of the fun. The giant monster is just wonderfully silly and the climactic ending of this creature was… beautifully nonsensical (though I did think the thing that would stop it was going to be the Nerd’s review of ET)
But enough about the effects. It’s the Nerd. And that’s the main thing to talk about. This was the Nerd’s story of his relationship and changing view of his fans. In this film, the Nerd’s fans demand he reviews ET: The Extra Terrestrial, often considered one of the all time worst games if not the worst. The Nerd’s actual review of this game is played over the credits, leaving the movie to tell the story of the alien conspiracy surrounding the ET game. The movie explores the Nerd’s relationship with bad games and how they connect people and the fans. And James Rolfe, of course, is killer as the Nerd, continuing to give the quality of entertainment we the fans have come to expect from the Angry Video Game Nerd. He created this character and embodies him as a man who really has been doing this for years. His frustration at the entirely psychotic situation the poor Nerd finds himself in is just such fun to watch and the ending is a wonderful high note.
The supporting cast, for the most part, are equally good. Personal favorite is Stephen Mendel, who played Splinter in a Ninja Turtles TV series, as General Dark Onward. And yes, he is as silly as his name suggests. Helena Barrett and Jeremy Suarez get great laughs as Sergeant McButter and Cooper respectively while Sarah Glendening as the leading lady is a good character, especially in her scenes with the Nerd, but her final fight with McButter was a bit disappointing (though the reference to Ninja Turtles 3 at the end of it was hilarious, but needed explaining within the film for those who were not in on the joke). The various cameos were hilarious and fantastic Doug Walker’s being fun though a bit disappointingly short with me wishing the Critic had a part similar to the Nerd’s during To Boldly Flee and Justin Carmichael’s appearance eliciting a quick sad moment in the light of his suicide earlier this year.
But is this a movie that will service for an introduction to the Angry Video Game Nerd? I don’t think it is. This movie is undoubtedly for the fans of the Nerd. This is a film for the kind of people who would have joined the Nerd in the desert at a landfill to celebrate an absolutely godawful video game. And in that regard, this is an unparalleled success. The Nerd’s best introduction is still in the youtube videos he is so famous for and that started Rolfe’s career. Rolfe has created the great fanservice, not only by making a movie but by reviewing ET the video game in that movie. For those of us who have been there watching the Nerd for the last few years, celebrating each horrible game that he reviews, enjoying him tear apart games that made him angry and making us happy with them, this is THE movie we’ve been waiting for. And for Nerd fans this is an easy 9/10. Those of us not in on the joke, you’d do well to start with the Nerd’s original videos and understand the character and the wonders of the Nerd before watching this film. Then watch it the way I watched it: as a fan. If you’re not a Nerd fan, this film is not bad at all, but also not something you’ll truly love. But for me? 9/10. High recommendation for Nerd fans and for those who are not? You don’t have to stay away, but honestly don’t start here.

Congrats on the movie James I really enjoyed it and the work you put into it really paid off. You should take the Nerd character and do a Nerd Halloween film or something with witches, goblins, vampires, zombies etc continue the series in a fashion like the Ernest films ;)

Seriously tho if you do another film of some sort starring in it or not I’ll look forward to it and support it.

    September 2, 2014 at 10:40 pm

I actually made an account on here just to make this comment. To all those complaining this is a pay to watch movie: Stop. James and all the cast and crew have been working on this movie for two years, they earned the right to charge people to watch it. I have been watching The Nerd and James’ videos since he was The Nintendo Nerd and he has brought me hours and hours of entertainment, insight, and information. James is actually partially the reason I collect games, or at least collect them as hardcore as I do. I was willing to drive 5 hours to Chicago just to see this film but I never got a ticket, I’m more than happy to pay $5 to see the film. James if you’re reading this; thank you for all the entertainment you brought me and everyone else over the years. You can count on me to purchase the DVD when it comes out!

    • Lukas Sprehn

  • September 2, 2014 at 11:04 pm

James, you should be extremely proud of yourself. All your hard work shined through. Your movie was absolutely wonderful. I felt like I was literally taken back to the 1980s with this flick. I felt nostalgic, I laughed my ass off, and I thoroughly enjoyed the AVGN movie. Everyone did a great job. Five star rating all around, James! :D

    September 2, 2014 at 11:35 pm

James and Co., I loved the movie. From the awesome soundtrack over the opening credits, it was clear the movie was going to kick ass. The clever take on the Atari landfill myth is one of my favorite aspects of the film. How did you come up with that?! Ha! The villain’s arm problems were hilarious, as was the inclusion of the “double pane”… really, great job, it was so much fun.

  • September 2, 2014 at 11:37 pm

Okay, watched the movie with my brother and…I enjoyed it for what it was. There were a lot of deliberate quirks and easter eggs everywhere that the fans will love finding and seeing.

I’m afraid that if you aren’t a fan, or if you have no idea who “the nerd” even is, you might not like the movie. But if you are a fan, or you do know who “the nerd” is, you’ll most likely love it.

I loved the movie because it was completely quirky and silly from start to finish and had a lot of in-jokes that made me laugh.

Thank you for making this movie, James. I feel like my $30 donation to fund the film was very well spent. :)

I haven’t seen the film (I’ll probably wait for the Blu-ray to buy it), but I just want to congratulate James on successfully completing a feature film! As someone who has tried (and failed) to do exactly that, I know how immensely difficult it is and how maddening the desire to pull it off can be. Nicely done, James.

This is the first time that I ever really thought about how much time and effort it takes to accomplish even the littlest things when making a film. What took less than two hours to watch took many people many years craft. I loved the big monster (not even gonna attempt to spell it), the E.T. review and my favorite part was the “Herb” nametag.

I enjoyed watching the film; many of these reviews are spot on. The movie has “James Rolfe” written all over it. Many frequent visitors/fans of this very web site will appreciate what the movie offers.

It has been such a blast to follow James to this point in his life. I adore the nerd and I adore the person within. I hope he finally gets to sit down with his Family and take time to breathe in all the success in his life. I can’t wait to follow him for the rest of his career. Congratulations James!

Thank you for all the hard work and amazing craftsman ship you have put into this web-series and film. You’re truly an inspiration.

Loved the movie! Some of my highlights were the various cameos by Nostalgia Critic, Lloyd Kaufman, and the Cinemassacre crew. The special effects were really fun to watch. The funniest part had to be the part with the power pad. The plot was a bit convoluted but overall it was a really enjoyable movie. Also, fun fact: At the 60 minute mark you can see a world war 2 book in thwe background behind the TV. I also have that book, haha.

Watched it again today with my girlfriend. She’s only seen a few of your videos, but loved it nonetheless. You made a great movie, James. Anyone who is being negative, or whining about paying for the movie, should be ignored. Don’t let anyone bring you down off your high. “Anyone who is being negative…should be ignored.”

Yeah, that’s probably the absolute best way for any professional or artist to improve their craft. Shut out any and all constructive criticism and only accept blind praise. That definitely doesn’t promote stagnation and mediocrity.

A brilliant indie movie with a lot of “fan service” and cameos, which delivers the irresistible feel of watching the work of an old friend while supporting him all along and laughing to each and every jokes … so rare and so stupidly enjoyable !
King Kaufman is in and god knows he’s the last dude out there since this movie who gave me such honest and loud laughs.

The movie has it’s minor flaws, it could have been a bit shorter and feels somewhat confusing sometimes but overall it’s just AWESOME, technically clean and damn powerfull and funny.

This movie is not just a good entertainment, it’s also the best “video game movie” ever made and a marvelous love letter to indie movies and to the whole gaming community. Made by fans, for fans … that’s it … 10/10 … PERFECT !

You made history guys … first real (and great) video game fiction made by gamers, for gamers. Thanks ;)

The movie’s a lot of fun. Probably the best z-movie I’ve ever seen.

I can’t believe how much action, stunts and sfx you crammed in there on such a tiny budget. Amazing!

I don’t think you should do a sequel necessarily, but if you were to ever do one… “AVGN vs. LJN”!

Amazing, the movies itself was amazing and hilarous, but the ending gave me goosebumps. It’s amazing how far both the nerd and James himself went in the last 10 years. I recently watched ROLFE: A No-Budget Dream again and it just made the movie seem even more emotional. More that the triumph of the nerd, it’s the triumph of James Rolfe himself.
I’ve been following the avgn and cinemassacre since 2008, and hoping i’ll still come here every few days to find new great content for years to come

Long time fan here. Just finished the movie, and unfortunately it sucked pretty bad. The editing was very poor. In particular I’m referring to the opening and a 10 minute exposition block around 40 minutes or so into the movie. You can’t just have a guy explaining everything to the viewer like that, it’s poor film making and it’s boring. Starting a film off with too much exposition is a death sentence. I also felt the casting was weak and SJW inspired. I would have liked the movie better with Mike and Badluck Bootsy instead of token black guy and grrrl gamer. The interractial kiss at the end came out of nowhere and felt very forced and again, pandering to SJWS. James’ wife is executive producer I’m guessing she had a lot of influence here. Typically the hero gets the girl at the end, not the comic relief sidekick. The highlight of the film was easily the General. I enjoyed his scenes and I found him to be genuinely funny. I actually would have preferred a movie about just the general and McButters.

In summary, next time please hire another editor James. Easily 40 minutes could have been trimmed from this. It ended up feeling bloated and somewhat disjointed.

    3/10

    • September 3, 2014 at 6:56 pm

I enjoyed the movie, the live screening probably added a better experience to me, but I also feel like outside forces were influencing James in this movie. Judging from the post movie interviews, he wants to keep the next movie production crew alot smaller, so hopefully we will see more of James’s work next time. That kiss at the end just felt awkward and forced, especially to the whole theatre who had been clapping and cheering the whole movie.

Not to anger anyone, but its unrealistic to think the movie should be free. James never once indicated that he was making the movie for nothing. While the fans did indeed finance the movie, the purpose was only ever for him to have creative control over his own idea. Would be nice if it was free, however, more than reasonable to sell his own creation

  • September 3, 2014 at 7:39 pm

Once It’s run is over in a month or two could you post some info about how much you grossed on the project vs what you had to work with. I know you had $325,927 (estimated) from what IMDB has posted.

I look forward to seeing how it all changes your life ^_^

    • Jim

      September 3, 2014 at 7:51 pm

$325K minus 30%ish in taxes, minus 4% for indiegogo fees, minus 3% for paypal fees, minus money spent on perks to repay fans, then he has to pay everyone that helped work on the movie. It gets eaten up very quickly, my friend.

  • Fred . Fuchs

    September 3, 2014 at 7:48 pm

I’ve seen it and unfortunately I think it’s just ok. It didn’t deserve all these years of work. It wasn’t really interesting or funny, like the AVGN episodes. It should have been shorter. And the E.T. review was rushed.

The part with the two girls was boring. But the monster’s action and effects were awesome. I liked the reference to the TMNT III fall scene. And when the monster catched the van and Cooper it reminded me of the scene in Return to OZ when the gnome king catches Jack.

I checked out the Wikipedia entry for the AVGN movie to check out the full list of cameos (mostly because I couldn’t remember Keith Apicary’s real name) and noticed that Pat Contri didn’t even get a credit on there. That’s fucked up.

Just watched the movie. Loved it.
Exceeded my expectations, which were already pretty high.
There were a lot of moments I laughed out loud and clapped.

The Mike cameo made me wish he was cast as your neighborhood friend, but all the actors did a great job I thought.

    September 4, 2014 at 11:45 am

I really really wanted to like it, but to be honest I didn’t. I know it’s supposed to feel like a cool B movie, but instead it feels like freaking Spy Kids or something, but with bad actors (the leading actors were ok, but badly directed in some scenes) and lame FX (B movie like FX and HD resolution don’t mix too well). Even the stylized glasses small detail made the nerd look like a different character in my mind, in a bad way. Also, I think the movie would benefit from a better edit, in my opinion. It didn’t work for me, maybe it was all of this, plus the decline of the tired AVGN character due to the the low number of AVGN episodes released in the last years, plus the Atari landfill excavation thing (the first trailer/plot was released too soon) which kind of ruined the story for me. Next time keep it simple.

  • September 4, 2014 at 4:12 pm

quick thoughts about the movie, long time viewer from the start. I think the movie version of the Angry Nerd is not the same as the web episodes of the angry nerd. James i could be wrong but please tell me the the movie is not in the Shared universe as the web episodes. This way the web episode Nerd never reviewed ET game and the movie was its own timeline. overall movie was worth $10……. what if the nerd reviews his own movie.

  • September 4, 2014 at 11:09 pm

Mr. Rolfe, I have been watching your videos for years, but just now registered for an account to congratulate you on the movie! I just watched it and think you’ve done a fantastic job! September 5, 2014 at 12:46 am

I watched the movie online. It probably would be a very different experience viewing it with a bunch of AVGN fans in a movie theater.

After seeing the movie and knowing the amount of the time spent on putting it together, I think it is a tremendous accomplishment for James. He did a great job with the limited filming time, budget, and resources he had to work with.

As far as the movie goes, there were many things to further critique. The general plot of the movie was fine, but the writing wasn’t strong. I felt the run time of the movie was at least a half hour too long, and I never was immersed into the movie. There was something about the shooting style of everything that didn’t really make it feel like a movie you would see playing in a movie theater.

The acting was somewhat mixed. Sometimes, it just felt like the actors were reading lines rather than acting out the scenes. I thought Stephen Mendel did the best acting job out of all of the actors in the movie, and he was the only one who said anything in the film that I actually laughed at.

I didn’t like the unnecessary swearing in the movie. Some of it seemed totally unnatural and out of place… especially in the beginning of the movie with Eddie Pepitone’s character.

The special effects were also mixed, but I didn’t really feel that they impacted my impression of the movie that much even if some of them were intentionally bad. There were some special effects near the end of the movie that really looked movie studio-quality.

I doubt people who never heard of the Angry Video Game Nerd before watching the movie would enjoy it, and I would only recommend it to people who were fans of the Angry Video Game Nerd. I rate the movie 2 out of 4 stars.

  • September 5, 2014 at 12:49 am

I really like the movie, James. You and your people did amazing work, so all of you should be proud. I can’t wait to see the sequel someday- haha.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS: And, not to be a dick, but I had only one complaint- reusing jokes from old Nerd episodes. They were great in the episodes, but not so great when recycled. And, my favorite part was toward the end when the Eee Tee carts started to fly away, and those two dudes who totally came off as stoners just started laughing. “You see that shit? It flew out the fucking window.” I watched that part probably 5 times. Overall, 5/5, it was hilarious- great job.

  • September 5, 2014 at 2:11 am

I Watched it 3 times. It’s an amazing movie, and I’m really impressed by the style of the special effects… I was expecting something close to the video “Intergalactic” by Beastie Boys, but you surpassed it.

Most of all I liked the message, but I prefer to not spoil it in any way.

      Well worth the wait.

  • September 5, 2014 at 8:22 pm

hello james (AVGN). I would like to give my own personal view on the movie and your career as the nerd. I live in the uk, I think it was 2007 i was about 22 years old my miss was out on the town, I was bored havin a beer and was browsing youtube, i came across your tmnt nes review. i was hooked i watch them all. I have been a fan from then. From that moment on made me get back into video games all i ever owned was nintendo (maybe that was the connection) now i own every single nes game PAL A UKV GBR.(THANK YOU) I m about half way on the snes nearly compled n64 ect not hard here tho collections are halfed lol. Any way enough of that, your videos over the years have been very good. I like it when you go over board i.e rob, smb3 funny i get it. My all time best is bugs. Now the movie hats off to you very very very well done mission accomplised!.my opinon the begining i felt it started too soon maybe it should of been a tv trying to tune in a little. Instead of wham(atari logo) or black screen music slowing bulding up. CHICK MAGNET (1 UP) MADE ME LAUGH). The green screen really stood out. Some of your quick 10mins video were much better! after the intro it was great all the way upto the funfare scene. could have been 1 hell of a great zombie moive ( the fans hooked to ur games reviews, your stuck in the eee tee land field hunting for games and there hunting for you!. Im trying not to say bad things cuz i think what you do is great and i get your work but i think the eee tee thing was winged too much. and the end review was not angry enough. I will still look you up on you tube once a week big fan x

Long time fan, first time commenter here.

James, I just want to congratulate you on finally getting the film finished and available to all the fans who have been eagerly waiting for the release of The Angry Video Game Nerd movie. Thankfully, it was definitely worth the wait, and then some.

I absolutely adored the movie from start to finish. So much so that I’ve already seen it 3 times and each person I’ve seen the film with has laughed and enjoyed the film as much as I did. Each time I watch the film, I catch a reference or an in-joke that I didn’t catch the previous time.

Thanks for all your hard work and dedication, and cheers to continued success to you as a filmmaker in the future.

Congrats on getting it out. I know it was a LOOOONG time coming, and I’m psyched you finally did it. Hope this opens more doors for you and just means more nerd stuff in general. I’m a huge fan of AVGN and have now paid for both the app & the film. I haven’t gotten through the entire flick yet, but I’m a little bit disappointed by some of the other actors. I just feel like they don’t have the same spirit or charm as our hero the nerd. This has also made me realize that 2 of the only AVGN episodes I didn’t really like featured other actors in them – those being Ninja Gaiden & Game Glitches. That isn’t to say that I don’t like any of the episodes that have guest actors in them, in fact I love the ones w/ Justin & Mike. Maybe they just understand the humor more and are more appropriate in the “nerd universe”. The movie actors just aren’t doing it for me. I’ll reserve final judgement til I see the end, but to reiterate I still love everything AVGN and I hope this movie is a great success so we can get more game episodes.

Anyways, here were are and James is now asking those same people to buy/rent his movie that just a few years ago he asked for them to pay for him to make it. So he got people to pay for him to make a movie, and now asks those same people to then pay him so they can watch it.

Cinemassacre should give a free movie download to those who donated more than the cost to own/rent the movie.

I find this whole thing insulting, and I won’t be donating to any future Cinemassacre project.

Well, I finally got around to buying it, and though there were some cheap effects with some of the models, this…. IS JUST THE MOST MAGNIFICENT ADVENTURE I have ever seen in a long time! And James’ humor never ceases to amaze! And a very interesting plot twist at that. Although still confuzzled about the boss battle… But yeah… Well worth these $10, and well worth buying the DVD as well… And worth every penny the donators donated! Effects may be cheap, but with proper execution, anything’s a master piece! :D

James, why are you having your movie donators pay to watch the movie? You do realize you’re the only person on the planet to crowd-fund a movie, and then charge those donators to watch it?

I’ve never seen any other movie crowd-fund project do that to their donators. It’s like double dipping! Get’em to pay to make it, then get’em to pay to watch what they paid to get made.

Really? Are you serious? A hell of a lot of crowd-funded film projects have premiered theatrically and actually been sold. This is not the first film crowd funding project to do that.

Pay the man, he deserves it.

James. You are such a great inspiration. This movie is fantastic, epic, awesome and – holy mother of god – pure genius! :)

I’m happy that you are here, bro.

James should get a fucking razzie for worst actor of all time and this movie should get a razzie for being almost as unfunny and bad as the love guru

I have watched the Nerd for years and years and i loved his reviews, i was very excited about this film (since it has been in the making for years.) but i started watching it and i gotta say, it was very very average. (i actually fell asleep half way through because it was getting boring) the casting for the girl and the black sidekick did not work well at all. there was no emotional character development in it what so ever. It would have been so much better if you had cast mother fucker mike in it, kyle, shit pickle, the glitch gremlin guy, pat the nes punk, (not just having them as a one minuet cameo.) also where was stuttering Craig but must importantly where was “death Christ 2000 beta!”. it was lacking in quite a lot of other details like where were all the 8-bit 16-bit music and sound effects you normally have in your reviews? but the worst part that was lacking has it has be the comedy. seriously how manly times did it make you genuinely LOL. The joke “nerds before birds” wasn’t very funny the first time and after the 4th 5th time saying it got real annoying. and you were repeating lines over and over again that were in your older reviews (like trying to piss in a shot glass tied to a cheaters back etc) this is most certainly not one i would watch again nor would i recommend it. (i would recommend the Mario 3 review over this) when you compare this to other crowd funded projects like “Video Game High School” (which is free to watch on you-tube by the way) it is not in the same league. I love you nerd but i think this might well be your swan song.

Just rented it, and I feel like this movie is strictly for super-mecha-hardcore fans (you know, the kind who overlook any flaws, and who tell anyone who has any criticisms at all, no matter how well intentioned, to “stop watching”). Nerd nerds, you might say.

In fact, this movie was so dull that I was actually anxious to start my homework. I’m not even making a joke here. I can’t say that I was disappointed, though, because I had really low expectations.

Some minor notes: I hope James stops milking the D-: face. It’s lost it’s impact, and is lingered on for too long. Also, were Cooper and his mom written by Tyler Perry?

All that said, I will continue to watch the AVGN videos, Monster Madness, and even James and Mike Mondays. SUCK IT, NERDS.
