Yes! More Contra! Even if it is LoW! Just need to beat the shit out of it without dying and say good riddance. Kind of like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUlAl6msxQU, although you can’t really say good riddance to Contra III.
July 14, 2014 at 8:45 am
The 2 Contra games on Playstation weren’t made by Konami.
July 14, 2014 at 7:17 pm
Yes they were. It says Konami on the front.
July 14, 2014 at 9:07 pm
Konami does not develop all of it’s games. Both games were developed by Appaloosa Entertainment. Konami just published them. The same is true of most big developers. Even Nintendo and Capcom are known to do it. Hell Capcom made three Zelda games for Nintendo. Some company’s don’t develop games at all but just act as a full time publisher. LJN is a great example of that. They did not make a single game. You might be surprised to know some developers who have made some of the best games of the 8-bit era made games for LJN.

Game testing is pretty much that- finding bugs, balancing, etc. It does get dull pretty quickly- it wouldn’t surprise me if many testers and designers don’t even care for it.
As an indie designer- much more, designing alone, you have to do it all. Find bugs and playtest repeatedly. It does get boring fast- it takes a certain person to be able to do such things. Kind of like how James does so much work with films. It just takes a certain person.
…also didn’t look like contra made the PS transition well at all.
July 14, 2014 at 1:01 am
I could never get this iso to work.
July 14, 2014 at 7:55 am
Maybe if you bought the game instead of trying to steal it, it would work better for you?
July 14, 2014 at 12:38 pm
Naw. It’s still a piece of shit.
July 14, 2014 at 1:02 am
July 14, 2014 at 1:06 am
Nice Lego sets in the background! I had that exact same castle…
July 14, 2014 at 1:13 am
You think the second game would be cool but nope.
July 14, 2014 at 1:20 am
Do Shattered Solder and Neo Contra for PS2. Those games are decent. Then do ReBerth on Wii and perhaps Contra Evolution (Remake of first game). Contra 4 would be cool but outside of emulation I don’t see you getting good footage.
July 14, 2014 at 1:22 am
If you want GREAT contra game that NOBODY talks about for some fucked up reason, you have got to check out Contra: Shattered Soldier for PS2…. man i played the ever living shit out of that game! and yes, its a 2 player side scroller 🙂
July 14, 2014 at 12:39 pm
That game was awesome, and hard as hell.
July 14, 2014 at 1:43 am
Hey guys bobby brady here i just played “The last ninja” all weekend. This game will blow your fuckin mind friend.
July 14, 2014 at 2:02 am
More sound like need a Gameshark for these games.
July 14, 2014 at 2:43 am
If you guys want what is probably the best Contra-style game ever made, then track down The Red Star for PS2. It is absolutely amazing.
July 14, 2014 at 3:41 am
Even if one player, the second game, could have been cool but they fucked it up taking away the stage ending after every boss, you can’t expect people to like replaying 30 minutes of stage in a game like this, it’s not an RPG where you choose when to save, there’s no choice here…ugh.
Even Ikaruga and Sin & Punishment had checkpoints and they were from the same era of those Contra games…
July 14, 2014 at 3:42 am
These games are total fuckin’ gar-bitch! Keep up the great work James.
July 14, 2014 at 3:45 am
Sonic 06 loading screens are nothing compared to the longest loading times ever on optical disc format, Soldier of Fortune on Dreamcast.
On Sonic 06 every loading screen doesnt even last a minute. On Soldier of Fortune every loading screen (no matter the complexity of the level) last two minutes and a half, and every level have a few. No one can beat that.
July 14, 2014 at 4:28 am
You guys should do Contra 3 Alien wars. Best contra IMO would be awesome to see you guys beat it on a monday
July 14, 2014 at 5:25 am
Great video but I wish the James and mike Monday videos would be a little longer.
July 14, 2014 at 6:26 am
Contra 4 *is* pretty fucking sweet, and I would recommend THAT one if you want to play a “modern” Contra game.
July 14, 2014 at 6:39 am
Sonic 06 actually DID have play testers. They told Sega that the game was broken and needed to be fixed. Sega responded by firing the play testers, essentially saying they didn’t know what they were talking about.
July 14, 2014 at 7:39 am
I know one other movie with the line “Run away! Run away!” Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
July 14, 2014 at 8:23 am
Contra: Shattered soldiers for PS2 was pretty good
July 14, 2014 at 8:55 am
I wonder, have James and Mike played Hard Corps: Uprising? It doesn’t have Contra in the title but it’s a Contra game 100% (it even has the same startup music on the main menu as the original NES game) and it’s basically everything you could ask for. Two players, side-scroller, all the classic weapons, adjustable difficulty, and a rocking soundtrack.
July 14, 2014 at 8:57 am
Nevermind, James mentioned it at the last second there.
July 14, 2014 at 9:01 am
Did you ever play tomba for ps1? that game is a dick.
July 14, 2014 at 9:06 am
Hard C.O.P.R.S. Uprising for the 360 is rad. Like, that’s the only word I can think of to describe it. It hits peak radness when you ride a missile onto a flying war ship.
July 14, 2014 at 10:39 am
You guys should do more PS1 games in these james and mike mondays. So much strange stuff to look into both good and horrible. PS1 is by far the most interesting console out there if you ask me.
July 14, 2014 at 12:05 pm
Well, the PS1 is not a good console for Contra, although I kinda like the penis-shaped boss in the end of the second game.
July 14, 2014 at 12:30 pm
Really enjoy these Monday shows. 🙂 Some 2-player games I’d love to see you guys have a go at:
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Streets of Rage 2
July 14, 2014 at 1:43 pm
to be honest i was hoping you would to this in your contra memories video or a Avgn video but im glad you got around it.
July 14, 2014 at 2:17 pm
The censored version of contra is pretty much the best censorship ever. To be honest it made the game way cooler.
July 14, 2014 at 2:19 pm
Seems like the Contra series fell victim to the 3D trend of the mid-90s. When 3D first became viable on home consoles, every existing franchise was forced into it by the companies, in some cases drastically compromising gameplay for “new technology”.
It was always hit or miss.
July 14, 2014 at 2:23 pm
Wondering what happened to the Ikari Warriors series? We all know Ralph and Clark from that series became characters in the King of Fighters series, but that’s a totally different gameplay.
I believe the Ikari Warriors series was basically replaced by the Metal Slug series!
The only difference is MS being sidescroller while IW was overhead, but they’re both shoot em up with a military theme made by SNK. This I believe is kinda confirmed by the fact that Ralph and Clark are added as selectable characters in Metal Slug 6 and Metal Slug 7.
July 14, 2014 at 4:27 pm
have you ever played Contra: Shattered Soldier for PS2?
July 14, 2014 at 4:38 pm
Never played those two before, but they are known for being pretty hard – and not that good.
BUT, play the Genesis Version! In my opinion, it’s the best of the older Contras. Even better than Contra 3 for the SNES. Fast-paced action, a good variety of stages, awesome music, more awesome graphic effects and so on…
Contra 4 is also pretty nice, unfortunately it never made it over here to Europe, but I got my copy since 2008, and it took me very long to beat it on “Normal” difficulty. Maybe some day I’m alble to beat it on “Hard”. But I must say that 4 was my first real in-depth Contra experience. I remember, in the 90s, a friend of mine had a so-called “Italian Nintendo” (was some china famiclone) with Contra on it where you were able to select the first stage, but I just watched my brother and the firend playing it – they had a hard time because of the difficulty.
I also recommend Contra: Shattered Soldier for the PS2. It is pure 2D gameplay with similar 3D camera twists seen in other games nowadays. But, it has several Boss fights, is pretty challenging, has two players (of course!) and so on. That was the REAL next-gen Contra game back then. Would be cool if you chose that for the next Monday epsiode.
There is also Neo Contra for the PS2, but I didn’t play that in depth, so I couldn’t say too much about it. It has that top-view thing from Legacy of War, but I think that the controls are better (you can strafe etc).
July 14, 2014 at 7:19 pm
Play Contra: Shattered Soldier on Ps2! It’s a lot more like the classics.
July 14, 2014 at 7:24 pm
1st game: Huh, I never played that. I’ve played the NES ones, Contra 3, and Contra Force, but never that. I always thought they were only on Nintendo and Sega. This kinda game looks like it wasn’t fully made. 2nd game: This game looks a little better, but it looks weird at the same time. Is it 2D or 3D? It’s like a 3DS game hybrid. I’d rather play this one than the first.
July 14, 2014 at 9:19 pm
Anyone else kinda want to start a Mike Matei cult?!
July 15, 2014 at 4:17 am
Sadly you haven’t beaten the first level of contra adventure. The best part comes after that: The game turns into a third person shooter. And stays like that till the end. That’s why there’s no 2-player-mode.
July 15, 2014 at 11:30 am
You guys should play Contra ReBirth
July 15, 2014 at 11:59 am
Please do Hard Corps: Uprising next!
That’s the one on PS360 which James talked about at the end.
I really love it. My favourite “Contra” game. I think you guys would enjoy it too (there’s great music as well!!).
Greetings from Germany
July 15, 2014 at 6:24 pm
‘Contra: Shattered Soldier’ for PS2 was pretty good. It was the classic side scrolling style gameplay, but with 3D graphics, and some of the boss battles were in open environments.
July 15, 2014 at 9:27 pm
Hm, they did such a great job of converting Castlevania to the Playstation, it is kind of surprising they dropped the ball with the Contra games. Legacy didn’t appear to have any Contra feel to it while the Adventure game could have been good had they added two players and just had you continue where you left off.
July 16, 2014 at 3:04 am
They walk up like the characters from the animated MIB
July 16, 2014 at 10:31 am
C’mon, were you really trying?
You’re able to carry more than one weapon at a time in this game and I can clearly see in the video that you had all three bombs while fighting the boss.
I played this game back when it was released and the first stage wasn’t this difficult.
BTW, this game turns into a Tomb Raider style after the first stage.
July 16, 2014 at 10:34 am
Previous comment refers to The Contra Adventure. Forgot to mention.
July 17, 2014 at 2:21 am
What about CONTRA REBIRTH for the Nintendo WII? It is a damn good game. And very, VERY challenging (specially if you play it on “impossible”)
July 17, 2014 at 1:53 pm
Nice video guys.
Being fans of the ‘real’ Contra games I have to recommend you both try out Contra Rebirth on Wii and Contra Shattered Soldier on PS2. The latter is actually my favourite ever Contra.
July 18, 2014 at 1:35 am
Cool video; I think “The Contra Adventure” would have been better if it had 2 players and checkpoints, but that “Contra: Legacy of War”? Ultimate sadness all around.
July 18, 2014 at 7:36 pm
Contra: Shattered Soldier on the PS2 wasn’t bad, it was a return to the 2D style gameplay and had solid graphics. Best thing was that it was 2 player and had some throwback bosses and some crude humor.
July 19, 2014 at 7:50 am
Please please please do Contra Hard Corps for the genesis.
It’s an awesome game. They even make fun of castlevania at one point.
July 20, 2014 at 3:08 am
Was that the Contra in which we run on helicopter blades and ride velociraptors? (lol!) I always wanted to try them because of those hilarious settings.
You guys should try some sega saturn gems like Radiant Silvergun, Psychic Killer, Guardian Heroes. Those games.. they are divine. Anyone reading this, try them, you won’t be disappointed!
July 20, 2014 at 3:10 am
Oh, right, shattered sodiers! That’s the one with the velociraptors xD!!
July 21, 2014 at 6:13 am
do people “talk about” Shattered Soldier on the PS2? does ANYONE other than me remember Contra Shattered Soldier on the PS2?
July 21, 2014 at 1:43 pm
I bought Contra 4 because of this video. Holy shit, is it hard!
July 22, 2014 at 10:57 pm
Great video you guys! Lol, I can’t believe how crappy those games looked
July 24, 2014 at 8:15 pm
werewolf the last warrior for the NES
July 26, 2014 at 2:48 pm
Sonic ’06 was broken when it was released because the dev team didn’t pay attention to the game testers when they made the game because they were under an intense deadline and had to get the game out as quickly as possible.
July 28, 2014 at 4:14 am
I never played either of those back in the day. Doesn’t look like I was missing much. Thanks for the video!
July 30, 2014 at 9:17 am
It would be pretty cool to see you guys play Blast Chamber. I don’t know how many people remember this one, but it’s definitely worth looking up.
August 3, 2014 at 9:16 pm
the only reason i like contra is the konami code
August 3, 2014 at 9:21 pm
do a review for lion king on the snes
May 10, 2015 at 12:42 pm
So, it is true, then… Probotector and that “Contra” are essentially the same game. Who would have guessed?
June 12, 2015 at 12:42 pm
thats in the past
