Are you going to keep doing these every Monday?
March 24, 2014 at 3:37 am
March 24, 2014 at 6:03 pm
But what if one of you dies?!
March 24, 2014 at 7:17 pm
You guys got to do LSD: Dream Emulator; that is if you can find it. It’s a rare game selling for around 300$ the reasoning is because it was only available for 1 week in Japan. The idea of the game came from a staff member of Asmik Ace Entertainment. You manly just live his dreams. Lots of screwed up things happen, and it is never the same. You should do it for either AVGN or your Monday lets plays. keep them video’s coming.
March 24, 2014 at 9:22 pm
Great! I love these videos toejam and earl looks super fun I think I might pick it up
March 27, 2014 at 8:03 pm
@SPIERDON1: I guess you’d be Fucked then.
April 6, 2014 at 12:04 pm
even when you guys are old and maybe look like zz-top? 😉
March 24, 2014 at 2:19 am
NICE LONG EPISODE. WOOT. So amped on this. Keep it up guys!
March 24, 2014 at 2:34 am
Doesn’t look like Mike likes this game 😛
March 24, 2014 at 2:38 am
I love ToeJam & Earl. Maybe my favorite Genesis game
March 24, 2014 at 3:30 am
Shaq Fu is way better.
March 24, 2014 at 2:09 pm
Hey i was woundering for a james and mike monday could you guys play Zombies Ate My Neibors on super nintendo thx
March 24, 2014 at 7:24 pm
I 100% agree with Alex! Where is Zombies ate my neighbors? We need this game reviewed. Its SOOOO GOOD. I loved it so much I got the “Oh no more zombies ate my nieghbors” game online for 90$ and its still not enough to satisfy my urge to play this game.
March 24, 2014 at 7:32 pm
Great game and funny but I have to agree with Alex and Zombies, you guys should totally review Zombies Ate my Neighbors. You both would enjoy it due to working as a good team.
March 24, 2014 at 8:24 pm
Zombies Ate my Neighbors please!!!
March 24, 2014 at 9:24 pm
Zombies ate my neighbour would be a good next game review
March 25, 2014 at 2:19 am
I grew up with genesis and this one passed me by. I only had Sonic and Knuckles, a six pack game including golden axe and revenge of shinobi, and streets of rage 1, with mortal kombat 2 and three.
March 25, 2014 at 3:13 am
Seriously, Zombies At My Neighbors… You just gotta!!!
March 25, 2014 at 7:43 pm
It’s an excellent game and is definitely at it’s best when played 2 player. The map stopping game play for both players didn’t bother me so much and having a friend there makes all the frustrating moments not so bad. It does take a long time though. Last time my friend and I sat down to play it, it took us about 3 hours to beat it.
March 25, 2014 at 9:21 pm
The people have spoken! Review Zombies ate my neighbors!!!
March 24, 2014 at 8:26 am
I know right? lol… At least for the first 20 minutes of the video. I had the impression he was thinking ” Ugh… hate that game, pretty much playing it for James..”
March 24, 2014 at 5:11 pm
And James is explaining how to play the game, but i guess thats ment for the audience
March 24, 2014 at 3:46 pm
That’s just Mike’s Default look other than his laughing look.
March 24, 2014 at 2:46 am
Certainly a strange game.
Graphics and music are awesome though.
PS: Zombies ate my neighbors. /another generic request
March 25, 2014 at 8:37 am
Action packed baby! Great show.
March 24, 2014 at 3:02 am
I own this game got it for 10 bucks on ebay. I have a pretty epic genesis collection 😉 And you guys picked a GREAT game this week! I loved this game when I was a kid and it’s even better 2 player!
March 24, 2014 at 3:09 am
GREAT video! Keep them coming guys! 🙂
March 24, 2014 at 3:13 am
I remember sitting down trying to complete this game with a friend. I think we got about as far too. Those presents … man that randomizer gift is a annoying! Anyways, great try guys! Awesome video 🙂
March 24, 2014 at 3:16 am
Is that James’ new saying?
March 24, 2014 at 3:22 am
Thank you James and Mike for playing ToeJam & Earl! You guys have made my entire week with this video! This game, and Sonic 2, were the very first Sega Genesis games I ever played back when me and my family first got our 16-bit console in the early ’90s. My sister still owns the copy we got back some twenty plus years ago.
James, if you would have used the boom box instead of the decoy you would have gotten away from the Dentist much easier because the Dentist would have been dancing to the music, ignoring you all together. And the Fat Singing Lady kills all the enemies around you if you pay her to perform. Also, the tourists are actually called the Nerd Heard.
The rockets, are really only good for level one. They can take you all over that level on it’s endless water layout. On the top right there’s a bunch of presents on land. And as you you know, bottom left has level zero. That’s where the hot tub with the babes who restore your health, and the lemonade of extra lives, are. And dude, what the fuck!? You were so near the elevator in level 20! Lol! You could have just walked up instead of going through doors. This game is indeed tense! : )
Thanks for all the fond memories you flooded my mind with in this video. I hope you two will play the sequels soon. I would love to see you show the massive change they made when they released “ToeJam & Earl: Panic On Funk-o-tron” a few years after the original’s release, and then the XBOX release of ToeJam & Earl II: Mission To Earth.
I got all but the final wing of the spaceship, never could win this one. From what I hear about the one for the Xbox, it is a rather bad game. I played the second, but I hardly remember that one at all.
March 24, 2014 at 6:22 am
No, the one on Xbox is awesome. Probably better than the Genesis.
March 24, 2014 at 3:39 am
Finally played a good game for a change :p playing TJ&E twice in a row (after a long hiatus) really is enough practice to beat it in most cases.
March 24, 2014 at 3:50 am
Good stuff! I wouldn’t mind if all James & Mike Mondays ran this long!
That is funny i just played toejam and earl! a few minutes ago
March 24, 2014 at 4:12 am
Sweet mother of God, a 43 minute long episode! I gotta watch this tomorrow with some food lol. 😀
March 24, 2014 at 4:18 am
You guys should play Contra 3 Alien wars on SNES that would make an awesome play for mondays. Great vid though
March 24, 2014 at 4:19 am
you know its a good game when the vid is 40+minutes long.
March 24, 2014 at 5:11 am
When you were talking about the moldy bread and saying that it looked like chocolate, and James said that it was kind of like “that thing” and he didn’t remember the name of it, was he thinking of nutella? Or maybe chocolate-covered roulade?
March 24, 2014 at 6:23 am
Play the Xbox version, Mike. It’s a “sequel” but it’s basically a remake of this game just in 3D. The walking around places is a lot less obnoxious in 3D. It has all the same features, including the randomizer for the map, but it’s LONG AS HELL.
March 24, 2014 at 6:47 am
dude…. Toejam and Earl is one of my favorite games of all time. My brother and I played this forever as kids and we finally beat it co-op mode maybe 5 years ago?? Thanks for doing this one!!
March 24, 2014 at 6:53 am
Would you do a review of metallicas new concert movie its good
March 24, 2014 at 6:56 am
Yes!, this game is one of my favorite all time Mega Drive games. Thanks for playing this awesome game James & Mike!.
March 24, 2014 at 7:17 am
you guys should play Captain Novolin for super nes. i dunno if you take requests but review that game, as always i love your videos looking forward to many more
March 24, 2014 at 7:50 am
absolutely loved this episode! it was thrilling at tines. I hope you two try it one more time and maybe finish the damn thing :/ long videos dont matter
March 24, 2014 at 8:13 am
By far my all time favorite game on any system. I still play it regularly. Hell… I’ve actually played the main theme for soundcheck at shows a few times.
Great episode, as always.
March 24, 2014 at 8:34 am
Btw (if you guys ever stumble upon this post), you guys should really look up an unpopular Snes diamond named Gun Hazard.
It never made it out of japan though… Very sadly.
March 24, 2014 at 8:40 am
This is a game that needs a modern indie remake. Think how cool this would be with a friend or even online.
March 24, 2014 at 9:02 am
The player really sucks on mobile (Chrome for Android), borderline unusable: the picture stops regularly, the controls vanish most of the times, pausing always fucks something up. Also, one and the same ad is bugging me before every single one of your videos – very annoying.
March 24, 2014 at 10:03 am
Fuckin doors.. they don’t do jack shit. Hilarious. This was way funny to see ya’ll frustrated this time.
March 24, 2014 at 10:21 am
Man, that game looks so boring. You just walk and walk and walk through generic landscapes.
March 24, 2014 at 2:00 pm
Looks can be deceiving.
March 24, 2014 at 10:23 am
Looked like an adventure game with mario party rules of randomness. I see it’s cool but i don’t know if this kind of rules fit outsite of a party game, if i had a genesis i would sure try to find it.
Seems also like a bit slow, maybe because of the really many interactive menus and automatic split-screen, that required a lot of processing power for a sega genesis i’m sure.
But i was a Nintendo kid with the SNES and i’m a Nintendo adult now with the Wii U (just finished the really really difficult Tropical Freeze), who’s now announced exclusive Sonic games for Nintendo platforms, uh?
I guess this flame is dead. xD
March 24, 2014 at 10:30 am
Toejam & Earl, Bubsy 3D, Pikmin, many games with spaceship-parts-recovery idea.
Don’t forget E.T.
March 24, 2014 at 10:36 am
This game is awesome.
What i’d really like to see is James and Mike play Kid Chameleon on Sega Genesis. That game is frickin’ awesome and hard. I can only hope they find that game someday..
March 24, 2014 at 11:19 am
Yes! Finally! Been waiting forever to see this!!!!!!!!
March 24, 2014 at 12:13 pm
You guys should play Cool Spot, Mickey mania or Predator 2 on the Genesis, it’s my favourite Genesis games!
March 24, 2014 at 12:47 pm
Sounds like you both want another chance at beating this. Maybe next Monday? Loved the long episode.
March 24, 2014 at 1:35 pm
It’s been years since I played this, but I’m pretty sure James could have given Mike a life after he died
March 24, 2014 at 2:02 pm
Ooh! Ooh! *raises hand*
Hi, Wig here. First of all, great video. I was yelling at my screen with you guys.
Second, this is yet another request to see you guys play that “CLOWNS” game lol
March 24, 2014 at 2:05 pm
Just to let you know if you guys play the Xbox one. Xbox 360 can NOT read Toejam and Earl 3. I made the mistake of buying Toejam and Earl 3 with the intention of playing it on the 360 with backwords compatibility. It’s like the only game that doesn’t work with backwords compatibility for the 360. It’s also currently the only game I own that I NEVER got to play.
March 24, 2014 at 6:02 pm
It’s funny how the best games aren’t backwards compat. Phantasy Star Online isn’t either, but I’m guessing that’s because the game was 90% online functions.
March 24, 2014 at 2:23 pm
By the look of the item it looks more like shit-pieces.
March 24, 2014 at 2:32 pm
OMG, that was so funny! Can you guys please play this again and try and beat it or, play the randomized levels mode. Mike had me laughing so hard for 10 minutes straight when he was like “The boogey man!…*laughs*. The phone’s ringing! The door, the door! THE BOOGEY MAN, THE BOOGEY MAN! There’s the phone!” LMAO! I rewatched that part so many times, OMG :D!!!
March 24, 2014 at 3:01 pm
the last 20 minutes was pure comedy gold. so many funny quotes.
March 24, 2014 at 3:14 pm
james , mike play zombies ate my neighbors on snes, or sega genesis next Monday please
March 24, 2014 at 4:05 pm
Do the next Toejam an Earl game next monday
March 24, 2014 at 4:48 pm
I absolutely love this game! And I love your twos videos, when I saw on my Facebook feed you two did this for J&M Mondays I got all giddy 😛 This game is such a gem but hardly known! I’ve only ever met 1 person who knew of this game and they love it as much as I do, the soundtrack is amazing, I still find myself humming the theme from time to time and the concept was so original, shame the series got absolutely ruined with TJ&E 3
March 24, 2014 at 5:01 pm
Loved Toejam and Earl as a kid, still sometimes play it with the wife, +1 for Zombies ate my Neighbours next week 🙂
You guys just played one of my favorite games of all my time. You did good, but rally sucked to earthlings and the game. It could be way easier, even without bonus stage (that i discovered now by watching you guys), you could have used, for example, the “Boombox” to paralyze and distract the enemies;
“Rose bushes” are for to outrun the enemy tailing you, like the boogeyman, it is not much a help, but it does his part;
The “road zone” that you find some stages can be useful too, you go a little more fast than you go in the “green zone”, so it is another way to outrun faster and stronger enemies;
“Spring shoes”, that you guys really sucked in using them, can be a way too to outrun enemies, the trick thing in this present is the more you hold the “use” button, it goes more higher your spring shoes;
the last tip a give is for you guys is to watch the items you currently are using, in the final part i saw James in trouble with the boogeyman, and he used a present in panic: a innertube (one of most useless items in the game unless the stage you’re in have water), and in that same moment he used the innertube, James didn’t saw that he already have tomattos. You gotta watch this guys, it is in the bottom of the screen the status of item, and the tomattos is one (if not The one) of items that have longest life time.
And one last saying: if you guys finded it frustating to beat the game, don’t worry, you were almost there, just 2 parts of the ship and that’s it. The End. The game goes long (whaever is fixed ou random mode) to 25 stages and you can count that the last part of the ship it in the last stage, yes, the magical number 25.
March 24, 2014 at 5:14 pm
For next show, i really would like if you guys played “Batman & Robin” based on the animated series for Genesis, it’s a great game, it’s 2P Cooperative, and way more different than SNES version that i find it very disappointing if you compares to the Genesis version that it’s way much fun!
March 24, 2014 at 5:17 pm
Mike couldn’t be more thrilled with this game 🙂
March 24, 2014 at 6:19 pm
This was tense. (:
Best J&M monday so far. 🙂
March 24, 2014 at 6:29 pm
I must be the only 90’s kid that doesn’t like Toejam & Earl. Never understood the hype about it. I played it, and lost interested in it very fast.
March 24, 2014 at 6:58 pm
Great Video looked like you were kids again haha
March 24, 2014 at 7:15 pm
March 24, 2014 at 7:16 pm
pls, play again , and finish it. Open all the map on the early stages so you will have more presents, more life and money =)
March 24, 2014 at 7:35 pm
This game looks fuckin horrible. Genesis is one of the worst consoles ever. SNES was a thousand times better. Why James likes such a horrible piece of frustrating crap is beyond me. Mike did not look very impressed with it lol. And it doesn’t help that the game looks like it runs at about 15fps at most, if that.
March 24, 2014 at 7:48 pm
How did you get through the 80s and 90s without playing this? Didn’t you know anyone who had it? I mean there’s worse things you could have done as a kid, but not experiencing TJ & Earl is up there.
March 24, 2014 at 8:00 pm
Great video! Been playing this game for years! Quick tip, when you get the rocket skates, just quickly hit left/right on the D-pad to stop yourself falling.
I have been playing this since like 1992 and have only finished it properly once. Game Genie doesn’t count! 😉
March 24, 2014 at 8:07 pm
I beat it on single player as a kid. It took many, many attempts. The ending is worth it.
March 24, 2014 at 8:28 pm
I love it. Watching mike get unfairly pwned is actually really funny, sorry mike but when you get unfairly killed it’s somehow hilarious :-P. Great video, we have to check out the sequels sometime
March 24, 2014 at 8:57 pm
all day i was like eh im gonna save it for later, expecting a 10-15 minute video
March 24, 2014 at 9:08 pm
MY all time favorite 16 bit era game and also it’s in my top 10 all time games easily!
March 24, 2014 at 9:10 pm
I was only able to beat this game actually a few years ago with an emulator and save states … it’s impossible
March 24, 2014 at 9:47 pm
as much as i wanted to process as quickly as i could a witty comment for this <3 video (why, i don't know; i just want to think as quickly and little as possible) i happened to be getting drunk, talking to sluts, and eating copious amounts of Burger King whilst the video played. Now, as you can see, this video is around a good 45 minutes. As I drifted in and out of bouts of attentiveness with the video, with sluts, with culinary royalty – I would frequently switch focus back to the video, and it was not over! not NEARLY over! Look, my point is, the very emotion of re-living a retro gaming experience DOES exist in this very content. And that's huge to me. Don't just show me the highlights – play the fkn GAME. The grind. The grit. The determination. The sleepover with snacks and a console game you love, which equals 5+x the length of this video – you know YOU know what I'm saying.
respect the past.
March 24, 2014 at 10:35 pm
This is a game that was always very strange to me, but I kept returning to it when I was little, even without knowing exactly what to do. The elevator part is the best thing. Unfortunately I still can’t beat it.
March 24, 2014 at 10:40 pm
Oh, and a request: play Splatterhouse! I saw that James has it for the TurboGrafx, and it’s a great game with some bits of history behind it. But honestly the Arcade version is a lot better, with better sound effects, music and some extra details… You guys could play it on the Virtual Console 🙂
March 24, 2014 at 10:44 pm
Panic on Funkatron needs to be done! My brother & I played this for a year straight when we were kids, never beating it, but getting oh so close. I miss those days so very much.
March 24, 2014 at 11:11 pm
I don’t get this game. It’s like the entire thing is just an overworld. The style reminds me a little bit of “Plok” though for SNES. Now Plok is an awesome game! I highly recommend it!
March 24, 2014 at 11:57 pm
Mike seem grumpy 😛 Another great video guys, I really love watching these longer episodes.
“…and I’m still walking around like an asshole!” – Mike
March 25, 2014 at 12:39 am
Whoa 😀 Toejam and Earl got TARIS style ship, not only bigger on inside but can change shapes.
March 25, 2014 at 4:22 am
God I hated this game but I never played it multi! Lol I still love these gamer vids tho!
March 25, 2014 at 6:16 am
Hi James im zachary michael castillo and im 12 i hope the the movie go’s well
March 25, 2014 at 9:31 am
the Xbox one is actually really underrated, it’s basically a 3D version of the first game with a greater variety of levels
God how I wish Sega would bring it to ANYTHING other than the Xbox since I haven’t had an Xbox for years
March 25, 2014 at 10:26 am
This was so awesome, I spent so much time in my early teens playing this game and even now 20 years later its still one of my fav games.
Just so you guys know, that if 1 person gets game over and the other has a few lives then you can give lives to the dead guy to bring him back into the game, if you can combine this with the extra lives present it works quite well!
March 25, 2014 at 11:17 am
Who thinks Mike should be in a AVGN episode I do
March 25, 2014 at 11:19 am
Sometimes, the best way to be funny is not trying to be funny.
The last 20 minutes were hilarious ! We need more videos of you guys trying to seriously play a game. We just love to see you scream at the tv and let out a genuine swear.
March 25, 2014 at 1:52 pm
I think if Mike pushed a certain button James could have given him one of his lives. Great video though. My favorite Genesis game ever.
March 25, 2014 at 2:50 pm
Que de bons souvenirs! Very good game!
March 25, 2014 at 3:19 pm
March 25, 2014 at 4:14 pm
By the way I always thought the ship pieces looked like a loaves of bread on a pedestal.
March 26, 2014 at 3:45 am
This is in my top 3 genesis games! Next to Sonic 2 and Zombies Ate My Neighbors. I think the bad games work better with the AVGN and these Monday eps are better when you guys are enjoying what you’re playing.
March 26, 2014 at 1:09 pm
me and my buddy justin play this all the time we got about as far as them lol
March 26, 2014 at 7:19 pm
I want to see a second go at this. Mike got screwed over, getting two Total Bummers that early is not normal. Also, both of you got falls into bad enemies (which is kind of normal, but usually not as bad as you got it) and were generally unlucky on that run.
March 27, 2014 at 12:51 am
I would say it was poor strategy that did them in. For instance early on James tells Mike not to use presents, but then they both fill their inventories to capacity. They should be using/identifying presents as they go, so they can pick up the ones they find. Every stage has tons.
And it didn’t help to lose the life on the secret stage. With Rocket Skates you just go back and forth on the d-pad so you stay in a small region.
The other big thing was James’ overconfidence in those tomatoes. The Ice Cream Trucks are THE WORST enemy in the game, and when you encounter one you gotta open a present and bounce. Plus he took a lot of damage from the boogeyman that way too.
March 27, 2014 at 9:31 pm
Those are all true points. The randomizer isn’t much of a penalty until a lot of presents have been identified; I usually don’t worry about it until at least half of the presents have been figured out. Also, the “?” presents should be a last resort – they have an unknown wrapping, so you don’t identify anything but itself when you use it. Just a shame it happened to be a second Total Bummer in there.
March 27, 2014 at 12:57 am
There’s the same number of levels in the random map version of the game as the fixed map mode. If I recall correctly, there are 30 total stages, and then the end area where you are back on Funkotron after you win, where you could freely roam until you decided to shut off your Sega.
March 27, 2014 at 1:49 am
NEXT MONDAY! REPLAY!
March 27, 2014 at 1:04 pm
Mike, I love watching you and I really like what you contribute to the website. Having that said, when you play games, you bitch and whine like a little girl. I just wanted you to know that lol :-p
March 27, 2014 at 8:17 pm
I love it. NOTHING beats when he panics over a potential life ending situation perpetuated by James “I.e. “Jump!” “Get the thing, get the thing!” Or, my new personal favorite, his constant variants on exclaiming “The boogeyman!!!” That made me laugh a lot.
I like James’ well-acted AVGN frustration, but Mike’s reactions are authentic since they’re basically versions of that which haven’t been exaggerated to such a degree for humor. Most people won’t really take a samurai sword to a game, but most would vocally and angrily cry out a game is cheap and unfair while constantly dying.
March 29, 2014 at 12:06 am
Yes, so true. I’ve screamed at so many nes, snes and genesis games in my time as well haha I guess when you’re being filmed for all to see, everyone can sit back and be like: “haha, you’re getting too upset”, but it’s a natural reaction to getting your ass handed to you, especially cheaply. It is great to see those natural “fuuuuuck meeee” moments lmao
