February 3, 2014 at 12:41 am
Awesome! Gonna watch it right now!
February 3, 2014 at 5:04 pm
Great episode. A lot of passion here.
These guys do a speedrun in Aliens Wars with only machine guns, on hard, no deaths: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUlAl6msxQU
February 3, 2014 at 6:05 pm
Wow, this is incredible. These guys are truly gaming champions!
February 3, 2014 at 6:33 pm
Contra 3 isnt nearly as difficult as the ones on NeS. I appreciate you changing your name and trying to advertise your youtube channel on James’ website. capitalism and all that. you probably should pay him some ad revenue though.
February 3, 2014 at 10:08 pm
try watching some touhou vids.. it’s a shooting game, but it makes all this stuff but fuck easy, here’s a world record video of touhou 8.
February 3, 2014 at 12:43 am
For video game nerds, you guys sure suck at Contra 🙁
February 3, 2014 at 1:09 am
FUCK! There’s nothing I could have fuck’n done. Y’re, You’re going to fast now James. You have to slow down. : )
February 3, 2014 at 1:17 am
Now, who hasn’t had that dream before? Nah. for real great video guys. So bummed that I replied to this negative comment by mistake.
February 3, 2014 at 5:53 am
Well that wasn’t a dick thing to say.
February 3, 2014 at 10:14 am
It’s hard to beat without the code and 2 players
February 3, 2014 at 10:16 am
But they beat ‘Super C’ in one go at their first attempt: http://cinemassacre.com/2013/05/14/james-mike-play-super-c/
February 9, 2014 at 11:37 am
Good attempt guys. I want to see attempt #2.
February 3, 2014 at 12:48 am
watch a Contra speed run (actual NES, not emulator), sooo good
February 3, 2014 at 12:51 am
Awesome video. One of the first games I ever played on NES,and one of the best games for two players ever.Never finished it without a code though.
February 3, 2014 at 1:00 am
Wow, Contra! Nice one guys!
February 3, 2014 at 1:21 am
My only gripe in this was the final boss being a pushover. Otherwise, great game.
February 3, 2014 at 1:22 am
“I’m gonna be Aggressive on top.” Haha! But yeah, great video. And it his good Mike caught you on that, but that is a good quote.
February 3, 2014 at 1:26 am
I think Contra like this was an awesome choice b/c it makes me feel like we’ve all been part of this experience. Though I suppose some people have not.
February 3, 2014 at 1:44 am
“R” makes your current gun fire faster. “S”+”R” is what you want and it was skipped right at the start of stage 2.
February 3, 2014 at 7:24 am
Wrong. “R” stands for Rest. It’s a 1-up. and “B” stood for Bionic
February 3, 2014 at 7:29 am
Alright. Im sorry. just checked into it. You were right. and “B” is Bulletproof apparently. I was goin off of my childhood memory.
February 3, 2014 at 10:52 am
Actually, “R” is rapid fire. It makes your gun shoot slightly faster. It’s not a 1-Up. “B” stands for Barrier.
February 3, 2014 at 1:47 am
February 3, 2014 at 1:50 am
You guys performed admirably. 2 Player Contra is 100x harder than just going in single player, and since you guys haven’t been able to sit and practice the game for the video, I’m still really impressed at how far you guys got before you started really dying a lot. I’m also really impressed at how well you two play together. Overall, this was a fun and enjoyable video to watch, even if it was extremely frustrating for you guys to make. ;P
February 3, 2014 at 2:16 am
Will there be a part two, or is this it?
February 3, 2014 at 2:23 am
We might try again some other time. Next week will be a different game.
February 3, 2014 at 1:53 pm
Cool. I thought you two did really well in two player mode. Would love to see you beat Contra in two player mode with three lives eventually. 🙂
February 3, 2014 at 6:25 pm
Contra III sometime in the future?
February 3, 2014 at 2:25 am
Disappointing video, why’d you even continue past the first game over?
February 3, 2014 at 2:30 am
I’m glad they did! Who cares if they continue, it’s just for fun anyways.
February 3, 2014 at 2:27 am
You guys did pretty good! Would have been nice to have the uncut version with a little extra footage of after the game over. Just did a playthrough of Castlevania the first on my old NES and I get those FUCK!!! moments too 😀
Good video guys!
February 3, 2014 at 2:32 am
Oh and a small request for James, a Soltice AVGN episode or Faxanadu would be awesome.
February 3, 2014 at 2:56 am
Play gotcha next week! That game rocks!
February 3, 2014 at 3:33 am
Tom and Jerry house trap for ps1, would be really fun to see you guys play. We had alot of fun playing that.
February 3, 2014 at 3:42 am
SWEET 25min long!
February 3, 2014 at 3:45 am
I could see that coming, two player without practice? These games are always game over without practice, they just require you to know ho to do things, in this case how to adapt the game for two players. Good try on the challenge, anyway.
February 3, 2014 at 4:10 am
Hard as hell on two player. Push start and you can steal the other players medals lol.
February 3, 2014 at 4:12 am
I always enjoy videos like these of games from that era for one reason: hearing the names other people called various things in the games that didn’t have any “official” names, at least not in any easily visible way. I have no idea why, but I always called the boss at the end of stage 6 “Elvis”.
My mom would play this on 2-player with me sometimes. She turned the waterfall stage into a morality lesson about being considerate towards others by waiting up for them and not killing them by scrolling the screen up too quickly. It’s actually one of my earliest video game related memories.
February 3, 2014 at 4:34 am
the good old rage inducing contra.
February 3, 2014 at 4:46 am
That was cool, although I wish you guys had managed to do it. I guess I wasn’t of that generation so Contra doesn’t seem that impressive to me, but the one thing you can’t deny is the way it instils camaraderie when I see you play together.
February 3, 2014 at 5:07 am
aww i believed in you guys
February 3, 2014 at 5:08 am
you were kinda close but i dont blame you
February 3, 2014 at 5:42 am
Consider a “James and Mike Play” episode featuring Contra III: The Alien Wars for SNES.
On hard mode, of course. Gotta play on hard for the real final boss.
February 3, 2014 at 6:10 am
Enjoyed this! Really good effort 🙂
If you guys could play these games in the future that would be most awesome:
chip n dale rescue rangers, river city ransom, spy vs spy, caveman games, ice climber, eliminator boat duel, double dragon II
February 3, 2014 at 6:45 am
you Should of Got the R Right After you Got the Spread’
Because the R Stands for Rapid Fire’
it Makes your Weapon Attack go Much Faster.
February 3, 2014 at 7:40 am
Right, and it’s not “rarely useful”; it’s always useful.
Brentalfloss didn’t know what he was talking about if he said that.
February 3, 2014 at 7:19 am
It’d be cool something like “James & Mike Challenges”, challenging yourselves like you did in Punch-Out, or today trying to beat Contra.
February 3, 2014 at 7:41 am
The Adventures Of Batman & Robin for the Sega Genesis. Phenomenal Contra clone. Would love to see you two play through that together (as Batman & Robin of course). Especially if you’ve never played through it before. It’s fucking awesome. The best graphics you’ll ever see on the Genesis that are hyper fast with hyper-kinetic techno music. Really gets the heart pumping. Please check it out. For your consideration.
February 3, 2014 at 8:08 am
you lost your level of nerdyness slightly decreased
February 3, 2014 at 8:18 am
Watching this made my palms sweat!
February 3, 2014 at 8:29 am
I don’t know if someone point it out, but R stands for rapidly. It works with all weapon upgrades that use bullets. If you shoot without it you will shoot few bullets and you have to wait for them to disappear on the edge of screen but with R you will shoot more so you don’t have to wait.
February 3, 2014 at 8:49 am
Contra is so hard.
February 3, 2014 at 9:44 am
more aggressive on top?
So that makes James the bear I guess?
February 3, 2014 at 9:49 am
The only way for me to beatt his game is with savestates. I’am not good enough for NES games.
February 3, 2014 at 9:50 am
Too bad. Im a pretty good gamer, and I will tell you, unless you specialize in this game Contra, and have recent practice on it, beating it without the code..is nearly impossible. That fire stage is one of the worst. Nice try anyhow guys. haha.
February 3, 2014 at 10:18 am
Awesome video guys! Tough game in single player, almost impossible in 2 player. Someone always screws up the timing for the other guy.
February 3, 2014 at 10:27 am
You guys should do Contra III on the SNES next or whatever one that is.
February 3, 2014 at 10:41 am
You want that “R” power-up. “R” is for Rapid, and it makes your bullets fly across the screen faster. It works on what ever weapon you’re carrying when you pick it up.
February 3, 2014 at 11:32 am
R is RAPID. You shot faster.
February 3, 2014 at 12:03 pm
So are Mike and James still friends or not?
February 3, 2014 at 1:28 pm
You can acctualy jump over that fire pilar that comes from the cealing, right over the B item.
February 3, 2014 at 1:34 pm
HAHA, ale lamy :>
February 3, 2014 at 1:56 pm
Damn! I was hoping you would beat the game together. It looks hard as hell!
February 3, 2014 at 2:14 pm
you guys just HAVE to play sunset riders for the snes on the monday show!
February 3, 2014 at 2:49 pm
13:00: Me whenever I make love.
February 3, 2014 at 3:11 pm
I think if you guys practiced a bit more together you could have done it, but that damn laser level is a bitch even when you only have one player.
February 3, 2014 at 3:16 pm
You know what would be cool ?
If you could do sort of a smallscale Nintendo World Championships together with Bootsy, Kyle, the NES Punk and other Nintendo freaks competing in different games. I guess it would be really fun to watch …
February 3, 2014 at 3:33 pm
Every time you talk about Spread it makes me picture Margarin vegetable oil spread.
February 3, 2014 at 3:39 pm
Such a great video. I love the old-school sound effect of the bullets hitting the targets. Life Force has the same sound effects.
Oh, shit! You guys should play Life Force!
February 3, 2014 at 4:44 pm
Love Mike raging at 14:10
February 3, 2014 at 4:55 pm
Great effort, nonetheless. 🙂
I wouldn´t be able to get that far in 2P-Mode.
That´s the way to beat it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jerwm4ctkg
February 3, 2014 at 5:37 pm
Funny how Mike got much angrier than James during the game. You should do an episode when the Nerd meets “the Angriest Video Game Nerd”, played by Mike.
February 3, 2014 at 6:15 pm
James threw a controller though 🙂
February 3, 2014 at 6:40 pm
Oh Rolfe, your such a playa 😀 <3
February 3, 2014 at 6:48 pm
I take this game down without dying every day. (R) power up, Rapid fire is your friend when you’re stuck with default shot and it’s also your best friend in the world when you add it to (S)spread shot.
February 3, 2014 at 7:14 pm
You guys are getting old, if this was like 20 years ago, I bet you would finish the game easily. I know that felling, I played Super Mario bros a few days ago, minutes before start to playing I said I was an excelente player, I died with the first gumba… Guess we’re old for this games, but still have the passion for them or maybe a sence of nostalgia for this games
February 3, 2014 at 7:21 pm
CONTRA character’s are definitely Stallone an Schwarzenegger
February 3, 2014 at 7:40 pm
Awesome video as always. Love watching you guys play stuff.
There is one thing that puts me a little bit off about these though, and that is James looking into the camera nodding or something like that. It works in an AVGN-video, but in videos of you two just being yourselves having a good time playing a game it kinda messes with the authenticity. Just my two cents.
Keep these coming. They make Mondays a lot less shitty!
February 3, 2014 at 10:13 pm
Alternately I like the nods as it makes it seem more inclusive to the viewer, like we’re hanging out in the nerd room
February 3, 2014 at 7:48 pm
You guys should play spy vs spy. It’s a perfect game for you two.
February 3, 2014 at 8:11 pm
Please review these:
Frustrating NES games: Kid Icarus, Time Lord, Fun House, Toobin, Gauntlet, Krusty’s Super Fun House, Burger Time,
Bad Endings: Adventures in the Magic Kingdom, Paperboy, Captain Skyhawk (talk about hidden barrel role select button that slows down fast levels) B.O.B. (Genesis)
Miscellaneous: Princess Tomato and the Salad Kingdom (NES), The Black Cauldron (PC), Prince of Persia (PC original one),
James and Mike Play: Please review Track and Field 1 and 2 and all those horrible Olympic button mashing games for the Olympics (Include the PC ones especially).
Board James: Dungeons and Dragons, Pass the Trash, Jenga, Clue, TMNT Tower game, Home Alone Board Game, Dinoquest, Playing card games
February 3, 2014 at 8:19 pm
Don’t forget Winter Games and Summer Games on C64. Ultimate button mashers.
February 3, 2014 at 8:25 pm
More James and Mike Video Ideas: Blades of Steel, Ice Hockey (NES), Base Wars (NES), Battle Chess (original PC version)
February 3, 2014 at 8:26 pm
I have insane respect for you boys. I could never hope to be this good at Contra in my life! My reflexes aren’t the greatest. (Yes, I’m one of the ones that has to use the code when playing). A shame that you didn’t finish the game, but oh well, I guess you can’t be perfect all the time!
February 3, 2014 at 8:56 pm
And btw, Mike and James..
We are of course expecting that you get even better at Contra now and post “Contra 2: Revenge of the Nerds” next monday 😀
Gotta live like a windrammer, right?
February 3, 2014 at 9:39 pm
You really need to shape up if you have a hard time with Contra. And heres a free suggestion: Each time you finish the game (without resetting or shutting off the NES) it gets slightly harder. Ive finished it so many times in a row that there is NO delay at all in the enemies respawning.
February 3, 2014 at 9:57 pm
Love you Mike, but can you help James do another Nerd episode? Would love to see you in another costume too fighting James.
February 3, 2014 at 10:10 pm
When you guys work as a team you were kicking ass- you have to try it again! You guys can do it! 🙂
February 3, 2014 at 10:30 pm
So apparently the first Contra is harder than Super C.
February 4, 2014 at 1:24 am
Wow James doesn’t even get the point. “I thought it was just beating it without the code, whats it matter if we continue” So all those times you bragged about beating the game without the code you probably continued 100 times. Thats fine, but don’t brag like you beat it with only 3 lives
February 4, 2014 at 8:19 am
You only get 2 continues, even beating this game with 9 lives is great.
February 4, 2014 at 12:02 pm
All those times he bragged? Give me a break. At any rate, if I beat Contra when I was a kid I would be telling anyone who would listen, that was a legendary badge of honor back in the day – like beating Mike Tyson in Punch Out.
February 4, 2014 at 4:03 am
This was really entertaining. Hope to see you guys play more challenging games in the future.
February 4, 2014 at 4:11 am
Hi guys! Nice video and even a better game (the first one I played on the NES and my all time favourite). Your technique is nice (really good reflexes!), but your strategy isn’t so good, so here you have some tips to beat Contra:
M (Machine gun) is the second best weapon in Contra. Why? Because it fires nonstop. Just hold the B button!
As some people have said before, R stands for Rapid fire and makes your bullets go faster. It doesn’t work with the M, but it’s perfect for the other weapons. So, S + R is the combination you want.
Yo skipped some S weapons. In stage 4, in the section with just one aim to shoot at, wait until a guy dressed in red appears. Kill him and you’ll obtain the S. There are guys in red in nearly every section and each one of them carries a weapon. In stage 5, before the “islands” part, three weapons appear flying from the left. The best way of getting all of them is going from the bottom side until the ice wall. At this moment, the weapons will appear. Shoot to the left to get the bottom one (it’s the S!) and then shoot up to get the other two, which are the R and the eagle to destroy everything in the screen. So, as you get S + R at the same time, it’s the best spot in the game to get your weaponry refilled.
In stage 6 you don’t need to jump to trigger the fires: this is too slow and you’ll get killed. Just walk until the edge and the fire will appear. Then, as soon as it goes back, jump! Specifically, in the part with a vertical and a horizontal fire (where there’s the B), just walk until the edge of the upper platform. The two fires will appear. Wait until the two of them synchronizes and then just fall without jumping and jump again to reach the platform on the right.
To kill the stage 6 boss you were doing it well, but just jump in the direction of the robot when it throws its fucking discs. This way you’ll jump over two discs with one jump. If you try to go back in mid-air, you’ll get hit from the second disc. I fucking hated this guy when I was a kid!
And as a final tip, kill everything!! You’ll get more points and therefore more lives.
Hope this helps and hope someday you make a second part of this video. Hugs from Spain!!
February 4, 2014 at 5:34 am
Thank god there is someone here who knows how to play the game. All very good advice.
February 4, 2014 at 4:55 am
Angry comment. Angry reply. Save it for youtube!
February 4, 2014 at 5:31 am
R is actually the second most important power up in the game after S. The speed difference between regular spread and rapid spread is like night and day. Faster spread means bosses die faster. Only thing better than rapid spread is two players that both have rapid spread.
February 4, 2014 at 6:09 am
Make a review of Oniken!
February 4, 2014 at 6:23 am
After this vid I have to say, Mike should take over as the AVGN 😀
February 4, 2014 at 7:33 am
I want mikes titlecards back. I really enjoyed looking at them and they inspired the ones I make for my show. I like mike snd what he contributes to cinemassacre.
February 4, 2014 at 7:57 am
Hey guys, I’m new to your group. I love all your videos. Good try on Contra. I had that game also. I never beat it without the 30 lives code. Great fun.
February 4, 2014 at 8:42 am
keep up the good work.make a video of contra 3 that would be fun to watch.
February 4, 2014 at 12:29 pm
You guys should play Nightmare on Elm Street, even though James bashes it. Me and my friends have been trying to beat that multiplayer for years
February 4, 2014 at 1:50 pm
I just realised that they used Arnold Schwarzenegger’s body (not the head) from the movie Predator for the cover art of the left guy of this game.
February 4, 2014 at 3:34 pm
“R” is actually a good thing, noticed ya avoided it in level 2. It increases your firing speed. R = Rapid Fire
February 5, 2014 at 1:14 am
No code? I am amazed that the couch can withstand the combined weight of your balls.
February 5, 2014 at 1:18 am
Hey fellas! You guys should try out Mutant League Hockey, Cyborg Justice, or some Zombies Ate My Neighbors on the Genesis. I think it would make a good James and Mike Monday video!
February 5, 2014 at 1:25 am
This was by far the best episode of James and Mike play, good work guys. I think you should play more good games and less shitty ones, because it seems like the more you enjoy the game the more interesting the conversation is.
February 5, 2014 at 1:29 am
Seriously, I’ve wanted to see James play Link to the Past since he did the Zelda Chronologically Confused. Actually any of the 2D Zeldas would be great, it seems like there’s not very many videos of people playing older Zelda games while discussing them, unless its a shitty fanboy review.
February 5, 2014 at 1:38 am
Nice effort guys, and the video was intense to watch (my reflexes were going bananas). Some levels in this game are just not teammate friendly, though.
February 5, 2014 at 1:48 am
Nothing better than some good ol’ co-op gaming.
February 5, 2014 at 3:56 am
This is brutal. I remember when my buddy and I finished Contra without the code doing co-op. I was 10, and it felt like such a huge achievement. We also used the continues, not just 3 lives. What made it a bit less challenging was the fact that we’d played the game a lot that week, and didn’t even need to communicate because we’d found a good rhythm.
February 5, 2014 at 6:54 am
I always love James & Mike Mondays, but I really want there to be an Atari (part 5)
February 5, 2014 at 12:11 pm
You guys are good! That’s a tough game to do co-op. Loved the vid as always! Many thanks for making my day.
February 5, 2014 at 12:48 pm
i got this game the day it came out at toysrus on friday the 13th. my friends and i played it all night. this and ikari warriors makes you yell at your 2nd player if you get left behind. i think i get more hype on nes than any other system. thanks for keeping it real. maybe do part 2 with no continues.
February 5, 2014 at 2:05 pm
You should try “Contra:Hard Cop” on Genesis. For some reason, there is a third character, a Kangourou who has guns as arms.
