Ghostbusters mini-review

James / December 29th, 2013

Here’s a belated post for you. Back in October, I submitted an entry to co-host on Turner Classic Movies. I didn’t win, but you can still see the video here.

    Hey,I got first! Now what……

or you might as well leave a comment concerning the topic which the article is really about instead of wallowing in “firstness” …

How about everyone just post FIRST comments instead, so that when James and Mike see the comments section from now on, all they’ll ever see are “FIRST” posts, and then maybe they’ll finally get around to addressing the issue (they really need to change the post order to “newest to oldest”).

        btw, FIRST.

No thank you Punkbikedude. This system spares me the pain of pointing something out that someone already said, thus making me look like a total idiot. Plus, old comments are as valuable to me as the old videos they’re on. 🙂

      You’re a tool.

  • December 29, 2013 at 11:56 am

If you started your own regular classic movie review show on Cinemassacre, like a simplistic weekly Monster Madness, that could really take off.

In fact I would pay for it. Look into Patreon.

And just for comparison’s sake the winner was… http://fancontest.tcm.com/entries/add

omg that girl was awful! TCM is a bunch of old fuckers goddamit! you were robbed James. Just let me know and we go Project Mayhem on those pricks.

Wow, I can’t believe that James didn’t won. The winning video is phenomenally awful! The things she says and the look of the video is pretty good and unique, though it’s definitely too bright! And the way she says the things are really annoying, and the loud noisy sound hurts my ears and forces me to turn the volume down a bit, but then it becomes harder to hear what the woman says. TCM, you have bad taste man!

So why didn’t Nostalgia Critic submit one? Honestly I wasn’t all that impressed with the winning video.

      December 29, 2013 at 2:36 pm

I agree. It would have been awesome if Doug Walker posted a video, either being himself or the Nostalgia Critic. Or having both him and Rob Walker in it, unless it’s only allowed to have one subject in the video.

You should have won! You would be a terrific host, I’d watch anything you are a part of.

Hey James got some great news to help you up. A few years your show AVGN really inspired me. Even now I enjoy rewatching episodes. You do such a good job nailing everything. Some of your extra videos help inspired me. To being the person I always wanted to be. Just yesterday got an unexpected surprise. A few months ago The Simpsons had a contest. It’s about getting your trivia questions into their new board game. I ended up getting two of my questions in. As a bonus they gave me two free copies of the actual game. I gave one to my new girl friend who I love very much. She too is a big fan of The Simpsons. I hope this helps make you feel better. It was a good video for it’s length man. Please keep up the good work.

    How did you not win?

  • December 30, 2013 at 12:13 am

Wow. This is the first time making a comment, and I think it is well deserved. The video that won was terrible in comparison to yours. You showed great emotion, the video was very vivid, and the information you portrayed was enjoyable.

Sorry you didn’t win James. I can’t say the better person/video won in this case, but better luck on future endeavors.

  • December 30, 2013 at 12:14 am

James,TNT should hire you to host a reboot of MonsterVision! I would watch!

  • December 30, 2013 at 12:54 am

James should have won! If that doesn’t make me wanna watch the movie .. nothing will!

“You rented it so many times we could’ve just bought you the tape for that cost…3 times.” – My mom on my compulsion to always choose Ghostbusters. Like you it was also my first VHS rental memory. I know it was a short review, but Stay Puft, the Ecto 1, Janine, Slimer, and the theme song also deserve praise…and dickless Peck too.

omg the background white noise in her video is obnoxious. How did that win, did these people not know ho you are? It would have been their highest turnout for viewers no doubt if you co-hosted.

      • OMA

        January 4, 2014 at 10:54 pm

I agree that the noise was annoying, but I guess it was on purpose, to sound like a very old movie though maybe she went a little overboard with that, and also agree that her video wasn’t that great, but still, it shouldn’t matter WHO is doing the video (as you said). If James had won, it shouldn’t have been just because of who he is, but because of the quality of his entry. Also, I think he’s not THAT well known to have attracted so many viewers to a classic movie show, which is an entirely different viewer demographic than that of the AVGN (though of course, there might be some overlap). I guess one of the reason he didn’t make it is because TCM probably things Ghostbusters is not “classic” enough.

      • OMA

        January 4, 2014 at 10:57 pm

Of course, that should have been “thinks”, not “things” and “reasons” (plural). An edit comment functionality could come in handy here…

      • January 8, 2014 at 8:49 pm

I agree with Oma. I def think the movie he chose didn’t do him any favors. I get the feeling most the time that TCM merely tolerates newer movies, the “modern classics”, and that they mainly show them on occasion for ratings purposes. Could be wrong on that, but at the very least it’s clear they aren’t real huge on em and really, really old films are the definite bread and butter and focus of the network. He shoulda went with a classic universal monster movie review instead.

    December 30, 2013 at 5:53 pm

Folks, that woman who won wasn’t awful. Her cinematography was kooky as hell though. To me, it sounded like James was doing some weird phonetic things with his voice and it sounded unnatural at the beginning. It sounded like a nervous audition.

Most of us don’t even know if the TCM folks know about his background as a video producer/film reviewer. James, you would have been great for this hosting part. And you should seriously attempt at pitching something else like this to some people.

  • joliet_jane

    December 31, 2013 at 12:12 am

James must’ve been overqualified. That’s the only way to explain why he didn’t win.

Wow, you where robbed James, the winning video was a piece of putrid shitloaded fuck!

  • thecorduroysuit

    January 3, 2014 at 11:23 am

Wow. The winning entry was terrible. She even mispronounced Erich VON Stroheim. Anyone who doesn’t take the time to do a bit of research before making the video surely doesn’t deserve to win. By the way, your video was great James.

  • January 8, 2014 at 8:43 pm

Should just email TMC a link to your amazing Rocky tribute/location documentary, or hell just a link to your website. They’ll give you a paying gig after that, at least around October. A James hosted classic monster movies for TMC around Halloween would be fantastic.

  • January 8, 2014 at 8:46 pm

The girl that won really wasn’t very good, and i’m not just saying that cuz james didn’t win. It seems they were swayed by the filming style of it. Total meh from me otherwise.

I think a major reason James didn’t win though is the movie he chose to review. Although they do show em occasionally, def think TMC likes to shy away from “modern classics” to an extent and they DEFINITELY are gonna be FAR more interested in someone reviewing something from the 1940s for example. James shoulda submitted one of his inciteful and passionate classic universal monster movie reviews if he wanted to have a shot.

  • January 14, 2014 at 8:05 am

The ghost busters is not fit for a mini review and i dont see the point on that james. Its like you say to go and wach the film like we never see that except if you referring to the newer generation, then ill pass. But if i want to see those awesome films i will sertainly have always my shevle with my movies to remind it to me.Thanks anyway dude again and i know why you did that video, its because you love this so much like ofcourse we do.
