Well…the game was developed by Software creations, LJN only published it

      • February 16, 2014 at 5:15 am

ljn actually was mostly or even maybe only a publisher, but whatever, lets not ruin a good injoke ;p

      • Nintendope

        June 3, 2014 at 4:16 pm

I guess the joke would mainly be that they only ever publish shitty games with the exception of this one.

Holy cow! I gasped when I saw the LJN logo on the Spider-Man box. I never expected you to find a good game made from that company! The ending was epic! Great work James! Happy Holidays!

  • Weldin Dunn

    December 19, 2013 at 6:55 pm

Wow I’ve never been this early to a video! I just saw it on the side after watching some videos and was like, hey that wasn’t there! Nice video James.

  • Weldin Dunn

    December 19, 2013 at 7:15 pm

Also, I’ve been wanting you to do home alone 1 for a while. Considering you did home alone 2 it would only make sense.

    • damon

      December 19, 2013 at 7:27 pm

He DID do home alone 1; On a captain S episode that he cameo’d in.

    • Lukas Sprehn

      December 20, 2013 at 6:41 am

He reviews the first Home Alone game in this AVGN/Captain S crossover Christmas Special http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNAF0GGssbM Or rather, it’s a Captain S Christmas Special with an AVGN cameo in it, but he’s a pretty big part of the storyline of the episode. However, the review aren’t that much in-depth. But I thik it’s in-depth enough for a buttload of a crud game like this :)

    December 19, 2013 at 7:26 pm

When I saw that you had your finger over something on the game cartridge, I guessed that it was an LJN game, but after seeing the gameplay, I actually second-guessed myself…. Until you showed the logo on the box….. I nearly had an outburst!

  • December 19, 2013 at 7:31 pm

Holy shit a good LJN game

  • SGold93

    December 19, 2013 at 7:45 pm

A good LJN game? WHAT A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!!!!!

  • December 19, 2013 at 7:52 pm

In spite of what episodes the AVGN have been made, LJN has actually made some good games. Maximum Carnage being one of them. And it was Green Jelly who did all the music for that video game. They were a parody Metal band, most famous for ‘Three Little Pigs’ and their Cereal Killer album, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they copped ‘Mob Rules’ by Black Sabbath.

And to the contrary again, not all Spider-Man games were bad. Genesis had Spider-Man (aka Spider-Man: Return Of The Sinister Six), Spider-Man/X-Men:Arcade’s Revenge (also on SNES), and Spider-Man: The Animated Series (also on SNES). All were great games. There was also one on the Sega CD and one on the 32X, but I never got a chance to play those.

I loved Bubsy and Bubsy II on the Genesis, but I cannot believe how horrible Bubsy 3D was on the Playstation. Yeesh! Great sequel to the first, James! : )

  • December 19, 2013 at 8:07 pm

There is a good Spiderman game on Gen/SNES – Spiderman Animated. Also PSX/N64 Spiderman is pretty much perfect.

    • OmegaRockman

      December 20, 2013 at 12:51 am

Yeah, I like how the GC Spider-Man game based on the movie emulated its gameplay. After not playing the N64 Spider-Man in a while (well, it was the PC version for me), I felt very welcome. Granted, the N64 version is slightly better in my opinion due to the varied stages, but the GC one was still fun as hell.

    • FJMcCloud

      December 22, 2013 at 2:42 am

Lest we also forget Sega’s arcade game “Spiderman the Videogame” on the System32 board. A little tedious in places but a very fun game that hybridized beat-em-up and side scrolling platformer gameplay.

  • December 19, 2013 at 8:19 pm

when i saw that ljn sticker i shatta brick

  • Jaeger Newman

    December 19, 2013 at 8:24 pm

Yeah. LJN did make one or two good games.

  • dcco

    December 19, 2013 at 8:25 pm

Hehe I have maximum carnage and got super pumped when James pulled it out. Especially noticing his thumb hiding the LJN logo.

    • December 25, 2013 at 3:19 pm

ir’a hard game with different paths unlike Spiderman and Venom which was a 2 player game.

  • December 19, 2013 at 8:34 pm

LJN made a good game? -mind explodes-

  • PresidentJenkins

    December 19, 2013 at 8:35 pm

I wonder who thought Maximum Carnage was AVGN worthy? By that, I mean a pile of shit game. My brother, cousins, and I would worship this game, along with Spawn, as the center of the bad ass universe. A quality not just featuring the hugely popular and iconic Spider-Man, but Carnage and Venom as well. It’s right up there as one of my favorite experiences. From the box, to the cartridge, and game, it was just a good all around feeling.

    • Mike Brown

      December 20, 2013 at 12:01 am

My only guess is because it had the LJN logo on it. I loved the game as a kid and still play it every so many nights of drunk gaming but I never actually noticed it was by LJN before myself.

  • December 19, 2013 at 8:36 pm

I loved the ending so much

  • nowaitstop

    December 19, 2013 at 8:40 pm

    They made a game… THAT’S NOT SHIT!!!

This was awesome! Keep it up, man.

  • Hanglyman

    December 19, 2013 at 8:56 pm

    It’s a Christmas miracle!

I’m glad you gave A Boy and his Blob proper credit. I loved that game as a kid, and I still find it somewhat enjoyable to this day.

  • December 19, 2013 at 8:57 pm

LJN actually has a good games on super nes they just made sure they gave us enough shitty ones on nes.

  • FiftyQuid

    December 19, 2013 at 9:05 pm

Ha ha ha! Loved the ending. Awesome!

  • Ẍїηα¢нї

    December 19, 2013 at 9:38 pm

Wow. Pit Fighter is the worst game to AVGN? Then it should have been a full episode!

    • dcco

      December 19, 2013 at 11:45 pm

I think he only said it was the worst fighting game. I’ve heard it said that the game he dislikes the most is Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

      • dcco

        December 19, 2013 at 11:50 pm

Woops I’m wrong. Not worst fighting game, but worst super nes game. I guess maybe that would be good enough, but it doesn’t really look like there’s much to say about it.

    • FJMcCloud

      December 20, 2013 at 12:25 am

Pit Fighter is one of the few examples of the SNES port being WORSE than the Genesis port. And I’m even factoring the Mortal Kombat 1 censorship debacle. MK1 on SNES was still very solid overall.

But Pit Fighter on Genesis is surprising. Some of the subtle control nuances of the arcade game (which only one person I know can appreciate) are actually in the Genesis cart intact!

      • Matthew Collins

        December 22, 2013 at 1:59 pm

Yeah, I was a huge fan of Pit-Fighter arcade machine, so I bought it on Genesis. That’s a pretty solid port. But then I tried playing on PC and through one of those Midway Arcade compilations and those ports were kinda crappy. But on Genesis though, best thing next to playing the actual arcade game.

at last one good spider-man game

    • December 19, 2013 at 11:54 pm

At last, one good LJN game!!

      • Mike Brown

        December 20, 2013 at 12:02 am

        At least one happy ending.

  • December 19, 2013 at 10:22 pm

I got so happy when you pulled out maximum carnage! Seeing you play one of my favourite SNES games my my day! Great job James :)

  • herbsuperb

    December 19, 2013 at 10:40 pm

Didn’t LJN also make Arcade’s Revenge. That game SUCKED!

  • December 19, 2013 at 10:59 pm

Oh man, I remember playing Maximum Carnage at my friends house all the time and how awesome it was. All this time I never realized it was the laughing jokin’ numbnuts all the time!

Maximum Carnage was the first thing that got me interested in spiderman because I liked how badass Doppleganger and Venom were, characters of whom I was previously unaware. Well played, LJN. :P

  • Joker83

    December 19, 2013 at 11:01 pm

Happy holidays James, that was awesome! Yeah maximum carnage is one of the few games I have left from my old collection, still a good one. Totally didn’t realize it was LJN, that was hilarious

  • Another Guy Named James

    December 19, 2013 at 11:20 pm

A little bummed out he didn’t cover all the Bubsy games. If he covered multiple bad Sonic games, surely he could’ve covered all the Bubsy games. I mean, They all suck just as bad as Bubsy 3D.

I suppose JonTron and Taco-Man doing it first was enough.

    • FJMcCloud

      December 20, 2013 at 12:34 am

I guess my reply got dropped somehow?
To paraphrase, the very first Bubsy game on SNES was big-budget, well-received, and obviously sold well enough to launch the whole series.

Magazine coverage was everywhere. Pick up an old EGM and look for the Egon guy. “Is it true you and Arnold are going to do a ‘Furminator’ movie?”

And, Neo-Geo notwithstanding, no one had seen a 2-megabyte platformer yet at home. Only Street Fighter 2 had busted that big-budget ROM territory at the time. And yet, yeah, I’d still rather play Contra 3 at half the ROM size. Bubsy’s voice…ARGH!

      • ToadRoad

        December 21, 2013 at 2:28 am

That was what I didn’t like about this episode in general, that it focused on games that aren’t really that bad. As much as I hated hopping around roller-coasters to collect balls of yarn, Bubsy (at least part 1) was a decent game.

  • December 19, 2013 at 11:54 pm

That ending…holy shit that was great. :D

  • Don Skiver

    December 20, 2013 at 12:08 am

YES! Finally you did Maximum Carnage! I remember saying way back when that there was a GOOD Spiderman game, a GOOD LJN game, MAXIMUM CARNAGE! My only complaint about the game is that it’s pretty damn hard, and that it’s only single player. If there was a two player option, with player two being Venom, the game would have been incredible. As it stands, its just pretty damn good (at least to a comics geek, and beat ‘em up fan like myself).

  • Lance Uppercut

    December 20, 2013 at 12:09 am

Correction at 4:15. It’s Larry that has to find an alternative violin. Oh, you just got Lanced!!!

    • December 20, 2013 at 12:28 am

Yeah, he screwed up the line, but that doesn’t mean you have to be a dick about it.

  • D-Man

    December 20, 2013 at 12:48 am

An LJN game that is not shit? I actually know one that was decent. Disclaimer: Still plenty of flaws, several attempts to be innovative that were mediocre, but ultimately a fun game:

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves on NES

  • bobby brady

    December 20, 2013 at 12:52 am

Hey Mike & James i hate burst your bubble, but girls of the world ain’t nothing but trouble, and The Punisher on NES is satisfying. You & James know my ex dumped me because she caught me several times staring at the wall while being zoned out playing Bubsy?I think i told you before.

  • D-Man

    December 20, 2013 at 12:52 am

Also, TY for the excellent Christmas videos. I re-watched the bible games ones thinking that those would have to do, but holy crap, you found a piece of crap habit from the 80′s and 90′s that provided an AWESOME fucking story.

If you ever want me to start a petition for Roger Corman to hire you as a director, I will gladly do so.

Live like a windrammer you fuck!!!

  • December 20, 2013 at 1:22 am

Well they were owned by Acclaim, so you’d think eventually they’d release a game that wasn’t a steaming pile of donkey turds. Kick ass vid!

  • December 20, 2013 at 1:22 am

I remember really liking Three Stooges as a kid. It had a two player mode, and it was one of the few mini-game completions that were out at the time. In fact, I don’t think there were any other mini-game completions on the NES. I always thought of it as an undiscovered gem that was a bit different than anything else that was out, at least at the time.

  • darxide

    December 20, 2013 at 1:36 am

LJN made a halfway decent game? Everything I know is a lie.

  • December 20, 2013 at 2:18 am

Well, I must say. The Nerd’s world has been turned upside down. First Sega’s mascot on Nintendo, and now a GOOD LJN GAME!? Well, I’d call that latter a good Christmas Gift.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and all those other good Holidays. :)

  • LJN Toys

    December 20, 2013 at 2:43 am

Great episode. I like the idea of using fan requests for a chirstmas episode. That would be awesome if you do it again next year.

  • Ian

    December 20, 2013 at 3:03 am

    Thanks

  • December 20, 2013 at 3:42 am

What an amazing ending. When you’re 60 years old you should review A Boy and his Blob for the Wii, that’s a game that really improves from the original.

  • OutCold

    December 20, 2013 at 4:04 am

    haha the ending was hilarious

  • jordan hart

    December 20, 2013 at 4:08 am

I thought for sure you were going to rip into maximum carnage. But the fact that you actually liked that game made it even more funny. That went from being one of your more bland videos to a complete masterpiece at the end. I’m glad you’re back to making monthly videos. Thanks for being awesome and crackin’ my shit up!

  • NeverTooOld

    December 20, 2013 at 4:16 am

WHA-WHA-WHA-WHAT! LJN made a not so bad game! UNNNNNNNBELIEVABLE!

  • kuksoolwon

    December 20, 2013 at 9:16 am

Well,Actually LJN had made other good games,Like the WWF Wrestling Titles

    • Jarnor23

      December 25, 2013 at 1:15 pm

WWF Wrestling Tities? How could you go wrong?

  • bumbiqc

    December 20, 2013 at 10:14 am

I remember renting Bubsy at my local mom and pop rental store and boy to this day this game is the reason I feared renting non-3A games. It was such a bad experience that I did not even play 1 hour of this shit. Worst rental ever, it changed my life literally.

  • Uncle Sporkums

    December 20, 2013 at 11:07 am

Cool! Always wanted to see you review ABAHB, and I’m glad you found it creative, I was always charmed with the concept myself. Wow, a passable LJN game? That IS a Christmas miracle! All the best to you and your family, James! Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

  • December 20, 2013 at 11:23 am

Wait, so the Stooges have to earn money to save an orphanage from closing down? Isn’t that that plot of the movie?!

  • TheKingDuke

    December 20, 2013 at 11:26 am

Damn i was too late to request my wish. Maybe next time try the Europe games like Asterix, Tintin etc. Some of them are decent and bad. Believe me it’s even worst than a alien that falls in to the pit of doom.

  • DarkMagicianAVPFan

    December 20, 2013 at 11:29 am

The second I saw Maximum Carnage, I thought, “Another LJN game. Let see how the Nerd tears it a new one.” Then I saw how carefully you were holding the cart, covering the LJN logo on it and I was curious. Then you started saying nice things about it.

Congrats, you found the only decent LJN game. It only took you, what, 25 years?

  • December 20, 2013 at 12:51 pm

There’s a good reason that the Spiderman game turned out to not be shit. It was made by Software Creations, and Published by LJN. LJN never actually made a game in their life, they only published them.

That said, not all Software Creations games were good, they also made Silver Surfer.

    • Jarnor23

      December 25, 2013 at 1:16 pm

Yet somehow LJN managed to even publish only shitty ones for the most part. That takes talent!

  • December 20, 2013 at 1:11 pm

james and mike and cinemassacre in general are all geniuses. met these guys in parsippany at chiller nicest guys. these last two videos the wish lists, are amazing. i’m gonna have to watch the first one again now…

  • December 20, 2013 at 1:40 pm

LJN actually made good games for SNES, especially WWF games.

  • blue265

    December 20, 2013 at 2:25 pm

I was in tears for the ending absolutely brilliant so glad LGN finally made it

  • December 20, 2013 at 2:31 pm

I think there was a pretty nice spiderman game on psone also.

  • Erik Juberget

    December 20, 2013 at 2:39 pm

Oh…my…god. I actually got goosebumps all over my back when you saw that it was an LJN game. Good stuff :D

  • December 20, 2013 at 3:03 pm

Isn’t LJN makes a game that is not shit one of the seven seals of the apocalypse?

  • johnw1104

    December 20, 2013 at 3:19 pm

Haha these videos are still great. I can hardly believe you found a half-decent LJN game!!

It’s been a while since the Nerd ended an episode happy. :D

  • December 20, 2013 at 4:17 pm

Actually James, Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage was developed by Software Creations. LJN only published the game. Sorry if I crushed your spirit.

  • venus de milo

    December 20, 2013 at 4:49 pm

OMG! now you can die happy! but ljn (maybe) have more cool games (or maybe not xD)

  • December 20, 2013 at 5:04 pm

excellent; the ending is a big surprise =o !!!

  • Internoob

    December 20, 2013 at 5:22 pm

    No part 3? :’(

  • derneuejonathan

    December 20, 2013 at 5:25 pm

I haven’t waded through all the responses, but while I agree about the shitty controls in the Three Stooges, you can stop the hand on whichever minigame (or money bonus) you want; IIRC, it’s the A button. The beat-’em-up stage slows the hand as the game progresses. Once you get the hang of it it’s not hard to beat the game with a perfect score (save the orphanage, fix it up, and marry the owner’s daughters) in 20 minutes or so.

    • Poor Tortured Guy

      December 21, 2013 at 6:31 am

I was going to say the same thing. The game isn’t very clear about it but if you play it enough times you can figure out that the slapping game slows down the hand and that certain mini games bring in the most cash. It seemed like James only played it a few times before making a review.

      • FinallyGAF

        December 21, 2013 at 8:16 am

Well, this is one of the Cinemaware games.. and an early one, if I remember correctly. They made such great games with a lot of variety. Defender of the Crown, Wings and best of all:’ It came from the dessert’ This game should be right up Jameses alley, since it depicts a 50ties Horror movie with giant ants. But I guess Adventure Games are really not his games.

  • December 20, 2013 at 6:31 pm

James, I find it a little concerning that you are counting down these games and doing a mini review on them instead of using them for your up and coming seasons, and giving it the whole angry nerd experience that people have come to know and love.

Just as Doug Walker had to finally hang up his trademark red tie as he laid to rest the Nostalgia Critic… I can see you doing the same thing with the Nerd. Given the the amount of time that it takes to play the game, write your commentary, edit the footage, and having to do that and juggle being married, and having a child less than 1 year old… It is time consuming. All I can say is that I have enjoyed your videos, and you gave it a good run.

*third viewing ends* *jaw hangs open*…my god…it is! MIRACLES CAN HAPPEN!!

  • December 20, 2013 at 9:58 pm

You DO realize james that theres a Genesis version of this game in the same exact version. the music is almost identical, and SNES version is actually slightly better

  • December 20, 2013 at 11:25 pm

Damn, if I knew you’d be doing a request episode I should have suggested that you take another look at the TurboGrafx-16, specifically the shitty pack-in game “Keith Courage In Alpha Zones” that came with it. That fucking game was so schizophrenic and frustrating when I was growing up I just can’t let it fade into obscurity, that and it’s the video game equivalent to “Samurai pizza cats” in how it was translated(I.E. Throw the original script out and pull shit out of your ass). It also would make good crossover material, it’s based on an 80′s anime and it even came with a comic, I’d love to see a crossover with Anime Abandon and AT4W but perhaps that’s a job for one of channel awesome’s game critics. Just a suggestion.

I made an account on here just to comment on this. Despite the fact that I’ve been watching your videos since 2007, have been a longtime fan, and even had a brief conversation with you on Facebook years ago about Vincent Price.

Anyway, so why did I sign up just to comment here?

Simple…I’ve never laughed so hard at an ending to your videos before. This was purely brilliant! Not to mention I owned that game as a kid (Maximum Carnage). At first I was like “wait…he’s not going to bash that game is he?” Yet you did it justice and sparked a burst of laughter from me.

Love you, man, keep up the GREAT work. I can’t begin to tell you just how many times your videos have brightened my days. :)

  • December 21, 2013 at 5:48 am

At the end of the year you finally found a good LJN game :D
By the way the ending is so epic and funny! Great job Nerd :3

  • December 21, 2013 at 12:46 pm

If there’s gonna be anymore of these wish list ones, I want to see Beyond the Beyond. It is so so very horrible words can’t express… My parents bought it when I was little and I made them return it, a first for me at that age. Its a piece a crap rpg that is impossibly hard and programmed very very badly, bad story bad battle system bad everything. People need to know how bad it is so they don’t accidentally ever touch it it needs an eradication campaign like shaq-fu has.

  • December 21, 2013 at 2:07 pm

Too bad about Bubsy 3D. I rather enjoyed Bubsy 1 & 2 for SNES and SEGA. Great video James!

  • December 21, 2013 at 4:30 pm

On the three stooges game, yes you can pick which mini game you play, just press A to stop the hand, and the mini game involving the slappping with the faster and slower bar, you beat up larry and curly to slow down the hand making it easier to pick which game is selected.

Great video. I grew up with Maximum Carnage. I’ve wanted to tell him that there’s a good LJN game for years. I do think that it’s better than he said (though he did say it was good). I definitely disagreed with Screwattack’s review of this game. The music is awesome, controls are good, the gameplay’s satisfying, and the graphics resemble a comic book. I see it as a highlight of the beat’em up genre. It has some flaws, but I think that it’s a really good game. Merry Christmas, James.

I think we all gasped in horror when we saw the LJN logo. Could there possibly be any other good games? Great AVGN vid. Best in a long time. Heard a rumor that you’re retiring the AVGN after the movie comes out. I certainly hope not!!

    December 22, 2013 at 2:51 am

I remember A Boy and his Blob. I could not figure it out, but my brother got pretty far in it. It was the kind of game that begged for a walk-through. By today’s standards it would work as an indie game.

Good episode, but I have a question – Is this the part 2 of Ep.116 or just Ep.117?

  • December 22, 2013 at 5:00 am

Ahh Maximum Carnage. One of my favs back in the day. I’ve gotta be honest, I totally bought it because of the red cart, but it turned out being awesome.

One thing that always annoyed me though… there is a pic of Spidey fighting on top of the statue of liberty on the back of the box… that never happens. I had hoped when I bought the game that you’d be traveling around the new York landscape, similar to Bad Dudes, but it never panned out.

  • December 22, 2013 at 11:02 am

    Very nice in the ending!

Actually, True Lies for SNES is also a not bad LJN game (has its problems but is very playable and fun – the shotgun is hella satisfying). It also doubles as a good Schwarzenegger game. I was just as surprised as the AVGN when I saw the logo in the start up (hadn’t played the game in ages…).

  • December 22, 2013 at 1:13 pm

The sequel, venom and spiderman: separation anxiety was even better, it was two player co-op and had cameos from other marvel characters. the genesis versions say acclaim on the cartridge, but i hear the snes versions both are ljn. i grew up with those on genesis, and the nintendo ljn sinister six game, always loving the genesis games and thinking the nes one blew

BEST CHRISTMAS EVER! Thank you for this gift, James, I think my heart skipped a beat or two!

Next stop: The Amazing Spider-Man 3: Invasion of the Spider-Slayers for GB (still made by LJN). That’ll crank up the Diarrhea Dial pretty high, I guarantee!

    Hilarious.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a “Gold at the end of the rainbow” vid featuring decent/good LJN titles. WWF Raw on snes is another one, damn solid wrestling game that was downright amazing at the time. NFL Quarterback Club, NES Punisher, and one of the greatest movie based videogames of all time True Lies. Might be a few other playable ones in there, although i doubt it.

Loved the videos….didn’t like the singer in the opening.

“Nostalgia” means the 1980′s and 1990′s to me. “White dudes putting black guys in everything to look hip and sensitive” seems 2013 to me.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with AVGN, Mike, Kyle, Pat, and everybody else being white men. Nothing.

    • Jarnor23

      December 26, 2013 at 6:03 pm

      Congratulations Kyle, you’re black.

      • DavidB

        December 27, 2013 at 1:47 am

I don’t think that was Kyle. If so, he chose to strongly affect a black accent and pitch.

This also applies to the black “Mike” in the AVGN movie. I get that I sound like a crank by pointing this out, but the phenomeonon of whites – especially of my generation – running to seek the approval of blacks is silly and, frankly, emasculating. And it’s incongruous to the AVGN persona.

  • December 26, 2013 at 6:06 am

Maximum Carnage wasn’t made by LJN, it’s by Software Creations, the makers of the even more awesome Solstice games (Solstice for NES and Equinox for SNES)
This is actually the first time I’ve heard that the game even had a relation to LJN.

  • Joseph Nunes

    December 26, 2013 at 9:41 am

Dear James: For the next episode could you have kyle do the whole AVGN song

  • Tom Binegar

    December 27, 2013 at 1:04 am

The end blew my mind had to know….. Sorry Nerd… It’s all a lie to let a decent game company make more games…..
    (Taken from Wiki)—
During the time the company was owned by Acclaim Entertainment, LJN continued with the same licensing direction it had pursued under MCA or as an independent company. Acclaim rid LJN of its toy division and reorganized it exclusively as a video game publisher.
During the 8-bit gaming era, Nintendo, as a form of quality control, regulated the number of titles to appear on its console, the Nintendo Entertainment System.[13] As a result, companies like Acclaim used divisions such as LJN to produce more products than Nintendo would have traditionally allowed.[13] Konami also utilized such tactics with its division Ultra. Even after Nintendo dropped its rule in the early 1990s, Acclaim kept LJN operating, which published several titles for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy.[14] Although Acclaim distributed the video games, they were self-published and marketed by LJN.[15]
LJN, along with the Flying Edge and Arena Entertainment labels (the latter two labels which published Acclaim’s games to Sega’s consoles), were folded into Acclaim in 1995.[14]
In 2000, LJN made a return in name only when Acclaim used the brand to publish the Dreamcast port of Spirit of Speed 1937.[14]

Fun video; I think those oysters from “The Three Stooges” look like cow faces, and it’s nice to see that Ljn published a decent game.

  • December 28, 2013 at 3:03 am

I would just like to thank you guys for many years of free, quality entertainment. I know that myself, and many many others, really appreciate the hard work that you guys do every day to bring us these videos.

I am living overseas and was not able to spend Christmas with my family, and your videos made the holiday season more fun. Merry Christmas to all you guys at Cinemassacre.

  • skwij

    December 28, 2013 at 7:41 am

Hope you had a merry Christmas! Maybe the naked guy in the alley in Three Stooges is Shemp… There’s another Spidey/Venom game called Separation Anxiety also published by LJN that plays a lot like Maximum Carnage that isn’t too bad. I know you’re not huge on sports games, but neither am I, and I always enjoyed LJN’s Royal Rumble. It may be worth a try. Anyway, thanks for working hard to make great videos for the holidays. You guys are awesome. Thanks so much!

    December 28, 2013 at 9:21 am

You made a comment about Maximum Carnage having “Mob Rules” By Sabbath on SNES. This was actually a licensed 16 bit. The Genesis version had “Carnage Rules” by Green Jello as the theme song and it was actually advertised in the CD!!! Amazing that LJN not only made a decent spidey game, but also good music, too? It really was a time for gaming change.

  • December 30, 2013 at 6:54 pm

Maximum Carnage’s soundtrack was done by Green Jelly, you might remember them as the band that had that weird 3 little pigs claymation music video on MTV back in the day. The Mob Rules was probably a cover they did. Just to clear up why that song is in the game. I used to own it for genesis.

OMG. Somewhere embedded into my memory I’ve just recalled that I either had the game The Three Stooges or I had at least played it as a rental. Although I think I actually liked it? I must have been about 2 to 4 years old when I played it. Wow…

I genuinely loved Bubsy 2, so the 3D game was extra disappointing for me. It’s about as finished as Big Rigs Over the Road Racing, Superman 64, & Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

    • January 5, 2014 at 12:27 am

I bought it a month ago thinking it wasn’t a piece of shit but I was wrong. I love the three stooges but this game is a major turn off to the franchise

  • January 5, 2014 at 1:36 am

Honestly, I’m disappointed at his look at Bubsy 3D. I was anxious to see him review it and I waited for months, but he scratches the surface of it. That game REDEFINED the word “bad” and it shows in greater depths later in the game: certainly the worst video game ever made. I think this review by Retro Replay sums it up quite nicely: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZE10lLJTtI

    4.Eastern Mind-The Lost Souls of Tong-Nou.

Please review “Below the Root”! HORRIBLE!!! Made by the guy responsible for the CDi Zelda abominations (DeSharone)! It was a game he made before the Zelda games when he was with some company called Spinnaker Software. Just have a vomit bag nearby if you check it out. 0.0

  • January 7, 2014 at 4:26 am

NO! Maximum Carnage is SHIT!!! Sure the first TWO levels are fun, and the option of playing the rest of the game as either Venom or Spider-Man is appealing… BUT! The game gets incredibly hard incredibly fast. Also, it’s one of those games where you fight the same bosses in like 6 different levels. And what happens when you run out of lives? NO GAME OVER! YOU GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING!!! I’ve never beaten this game…

  • CrouZ

    January 7, 2014 at 2:36 pm

Does #08711 on the box mean that this was LJN’s 8711th attempt to make a decent game and that they had already added an additional 0 at the beginning since they didn’t expect it to happen so soon?

So the list continues. It’s a nice one. Obbviously Home Improvement is bad, and those other games, but I always thought Boy and his Blob was beloved. I guess not everyone loves it. I rented one of the Bubsy games for Genesis and enjoyed it. But oof, that 3D game… that just looks bad. Unifnished is right. It looks the game was barely started. that’s ridiculous.

Maximum Carnage has always been talked about as a good game. I never played it since I was a Sega kid… HOLY CRAP IT WAS MADE BY LJN!

  • January 28, 2014 at 8:33 pm

I owned Maximum Carnage when i was a kid. I always tought it’s a Konami game. Why? Because i had Batman Returns on SNES too and those two are very similiar even on their level desing to fighting and to gameplay. Both has those wall climbing level’s and even boss on rooftop after that.
Since LJN never made any of their games by themselves. Could it actually be that on Carnage they didn’t use some crappy cheapest group available and actually paid Konami to make this game? Since back then Konami games were all successes and LJN was getting poor sales from their earlier games.

  • February 20, 2014 at 3:47 am

Maximum Carnage was my crack growing up. I remember the day getting that game at an old dusty pawn shop for $10. I love that game so much I talk about it still yet. I played it so much that I still have scars on my thumbs and some numbness in my right one after all these years (well over 15 years). When I started watching the Nerd 6 years ago, I couldn’t understand how LJN could suck. Over the last 6 years, I had started to question if the game of my late childhood was truly shit–I guess not. I would love to find the sequel.

Yeah… I enjoyed the shit out of Maximum Carnage. My only complaint with the game was that it was 1 player only… With a Spiderman & Venom beat ‘em up title, it just screams for 2 players, doesn’t it? Such a missed opportunity… :(
