There’s nothing like a valuable contribution or interesting opinion right at the first position… oh wait, your post isn’t valuable, it just takes up space :P

Well Said. Anyone who can Read and Reason can clearly see that you’ve made the 1st, 2nd or 3rd comment. Making those types of inane comments on a website such as this denotes one of two things. You’re between the ages of three to eleven, or very immature and/or looking for attention.

      • Valis77

        September 6, 2013 at 5:35 pm

you do know they don’t respond to your comments, as far as they are concern, they got first.

      • September 6, 2013 at 11:16 pm

So, who cares if they type First! or Second! Does it matter? Why get offended?

        September 7, 2013 at 5:41 am

You all are simply jealous and have some anger problems. Its good to be first and be happy of it :D

        September 7, 2013 at 11:30 am

Jesus fucking christ, why are you so pissy about his comment.

      • Co0kieL0rd

        September 9, 2013 at 6:27 pm

I’m not pissy or angered, I just rolled my eyes at all this uncalled-for first-post-pointing-out that people on the internet do all the time. It’s fine if you mention it while also saying something valuable. But just writing for the sake of being the first one to write – that’s like standing in a queue at a shop without buying anything.

I have 6 Tiger Handhelds, Simons Quest (the best), Heavy Barrel, Gauntlet, American Gladiators, Wrestling, Bowling. My wife has two Beauty and the Beast and Little Mermaid so together we have 8. I plan on getting more. I like these things. Would like to get the Double Dragons, Ninja Gaiden, Marble Madness and some others for sure…of topic…I noticed in a vid you have a Vectrex James. I love my Vectrex and play it every day. Vectrex for life !

    • November 9, 2013 at 3:45 pm

vectrex was also my first gaming system, before i could afford the NES. before that i used to play game and watch handhelds (“fire”) in 1986 or so. vectrex r0x0rz j00r b0x0rz!

  • Alexander Albrethsen

    September 6, 2013 at 9:42 am

Lol, god, I hated those “games”. Glad even I was smart enough to realize during my childhood how dumb Tiger games were.

  • Decoy

    September 6, 2013 at 9:51 am

Great Episode! I didn’t know i had one of these, but when I saw the episode I remered playing with it. Alhtough I have to say they were ok, like you said it was better than nothing :D

  • BladeRunner

    September 6, 2013 at 9:55 am

Awesome video as always nerd! I had some of these when I was younger, and they sucked!!! lol.

  • ramo10

    September 6, 2013 at 9:57 am

All I had was an game & watch of Zelda :D but my friend had one of those and yea it sucked ^^

  • September 6, 2013 at 9:58 am

I had a handful of these games as a kid. The only one that got allot of play was the Bowling. We used to pass it around between the family to see who could get the highest score. Once you learned a trick you could get a strike every time. Anyway very enjoyable video.

  • Rick

    September 6, 2013 at 10:09 am

YES! I know you said you were working on a new one, but I didn’t expect it within’ two days :D Keep up the good work, James! Can’t WAIT for October!

  • taykel

    September 6, 2013 at 10:12 am

Another great episode! I have a few games like that. They’re from McDonald’s however, some Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon games. They’re not great, but I can understand why you don’t like those kind of games. To me, those were the things I play when I get really bored.
By the way, I remember the Baby Dinosaur song and I’m 20 years old. Also that does sound a lot better than the sounds on that Dinosaurs game. It was really hurting my ears.

  • September 6, 2013 at 10:25 am

Original MK3 didnt have Scorpion in it!

    • maximuscesar

      September 6, 2013 at 12:15 pm

but that was the Trilogy version, where really should have a Scorpion (and every MK character to the date).

      • Evan Naas

        September 13, 2013 at 10:58 pm

Raiden is spelled Rayden in the Game Com version. Thats some bullshit

  • Wendy

    September 6, 2013 at 10:28 am

Oh man! How nostalgic! I remember those. I only had one, though. I got it back in like 1990 or something when I was about 8 or 9. The Little Mermaid. lol I used to play it ALL the time. lol I thought nothing of it graphic wise…at the time. lol

Glad you’re talking about this. ^_^

  • Crabjock

    September 6, 2013 at 10:43 am

Man, what a trip. I can’t remember all of the ones I owned, but I remember having the Jurassic Park one for sure. I also remember having a Street Fighter, but it came with cards that had the characters on them, and you, if memory serves, slid the cards in the game, and I think it allowed you to play as whatever character was on the card you used. I remember not being able to get it to work correctly. I also unfortunately had the Rzone. Me and my brother both did. I had the one like in the video, and my brother had one that was like a small arcade machine. But it was still bulky for a portable device.

Tiger really was the pinnacle of penile infection.

  • PrincessZelda

    I love you avgn!!!!

  • Wendy

    September 6, 2013 at 10:47 am

Wow…a crappier version of the Virtual Boy! Didn’t think that was possible. lol When you brought that out, the first thing that popped into mind was Virtual Boy. Didn’t think that there would be anything worse than Virtual Boy. lol

  • DON

    September 6, 2013 at 10:58 am

Wow, this was one of the best episodes ever.
    Basic and straight.
Thank you for taking me back to 2009 :)
Keep up the good work James!

  • September 6, 2013 at 11:00 am

Hahahaha, finally the wait is over! I waited so long to see an episode as good as the old ones and now its here! This is definitely one of the best episodes ever. Back to the basics.

  • September 6, 2013 at 11:11 am

Great episode! :D It has that same quality from the first videos that made the AVGN character so awesome.

  • Hank Foreman

    September 6, 2013 at 11:15 am

I remember playing Tiger’s version of Shinobi/Ninja Gaiden: Ninja Fighter! Every time I played, my ninja gets hit and dies. Hit and dies. Hit and dies. That was a fun game, wasn’t it? Oh wait, it’s not! What was I thinking playing that again and again as a kid? BTW, I’m glad I never got game.com and R-Zone despite seeing their promotional commercials!

  • September 6, 2013 at 11:17 am

I think this is the first time in a long while I’ve seen the nerd actually drink on camera. I used to have all those games, in fact I still have my R-zone in a box in my storage building.

  • itscmillertime

    September 6, 2013 at 11:31 am

That’s the new hot ticket see! Best line of the episode. Also not all tiger games sucked. Dennis the Menace was fun, also Home alone 2 was a thousand times better than the NES equivalent! How that is possible… I don’t know. I actually liked street fighter 2 though, so maybe my opinions are flawed. One more thing, don’t go bashing POGs!

  • DragonChi

    September 6, 2013 at 11:33 am

I had the Aladdin Tiger Game. I loved it.

  • September 6, 2013 at 11:37 am

When are we gonna see volume 7? <3

  • September 6, 2013 at 11:43 am

You have really outdone yourself, James. Loved the cameo. Loved the review. It felt like an early episode, which is great because those were so awesome! Thanks for making my Friday great! : )

  • September 6, 2013 at 11:43 am

VR, eh? Have you heard of the Oculus Rift, James?

  • Pat Mullen

    September 6, 2013 at 11:45 am

“It’s proof that Jesus died in vain and legally changed his middle name to ‘Fucking’!” This is one of the best lines I’ve ever heard.

  • September 6, 2013 at 11:47 am

I think your bowling game is defective….my cousin and I had that one and it worked perfectly….he figured out how to to get a perfect score every time….on another note, i love retro games…and even though these are considered retro…i’d rather play Zelda on CD-I than play thru those things again….and I know how bad Zelda is on CD-I…I have one of them….:/

  • September 6, 2013 at 11:48 am

I live in Sweden and I´ve got three of these things! A handheld Tiger Jurassic Park like seen in this video, A Spider-Man one and A Lights Out with rubber buttons + Real lights! These are funny nostalgic trips.. but the ones that are not that I also have a lot of are the ones STILL being made today by other companies! Yes, they are worse than the Tiger versions and Stuart Ashens reviews them on Youtube! (He´s also on TGWTG.com). He is a hilarious British comedian so if any of you have not seen his videos I implore you to do so.

  • brett coffey

    September 6, 2013 at 11:53 am

I had a few of them. I had the Power Ranger one and Batman. They where fun when I was a kid but we didn’t have the money to buy a Gameboy. Heck my first Gameboy was the advance.

  • frostare

    September 6, 2013 at 11:56 am

This is one of the reasons Nintendo won the console wars wasn’t it? Hahaha that was a fun episode as well

  • September 6, 2013 at 11:57 am

hahahaha batman sounds like a porn movie

  • Gioeli76

    September 6, 2013 at 12:05 pm

Loved the episode. I don’t know why, but I kept expecting you to start mentioning the Gameboy Bubble Bath games! Those were shittier than Tiger games. Trust me.

  • September 6, 2013 at 12:07 pm

I once had a soccer game with the same technology as the tiger games

  • September 6, 2013 at 12:07 pm

I played the Xmen one alot. I didn’t absolutely hate it. That and the Konami TMNT one. I didn’t have anything better at the time though. I think I could still enjoy the TMNT one.

  • maximuscesar

    September 6, 2013 at 12:08 pm

Oh man, you don’t know how I waited to see this episode coming out. Since the first time ever I saw a AVGN episode I was waiting for it. And man, it worth it! Hahahaha
I saw back there a few master system games that I’ve never paid attention before. I wonder if we’ll see something related to it in a near future (it’d rock!).

  • StreetDreamer83

    September 6, 2013 at 12:08 pm

I remember buying and owning the R-Zone. I had erased it from my memory until this episode…

  • September 6, 2013 at 12:11 pm

really awesome video. but i was totally not expecting Bullshit Man to return. I freaked out when that happened. it was hilarious as always. Great job Nerd

  • maximuscesar

    September 6, 2013 at 12:12 pm

Oh, and I almost forgot to say: I played a lot of Mortal Kombat and Pit Fighter in one of these. Back in 1993 here in Brazil these games were the bomb! And for us Game Boy was an “out of this world” thing. A thing from Tiger in what I actually had a lot of fun was the robot 2XL, THAT was fun and learning!

  • thatrandomperson

    September 6, 2013 at 12:21 pm

That was simply awesome. I really loved the short bit of the Bullshit man. Great work James. And one more thing, bring us some more bullshit.

  • September 6, 2013 at 12:35 pm

Wow my parents wisely protected me from this stuff by giving in and getting me a gameboy. Now 22 years later the bulky grey thing is still working as are the original games. :)

But now that im thinking back I also owned some of these crappy tiger-games thingies for whatever reason, probably because as a child I didnt care and wanted every colorful, heavily advertised product on the theme that interested me at the time :) They are still sold in some form or another I think, mainly coming from Asia I think.

  • luconator

    September 6, 2013 at 12:37 pm

This is out of context but are we getting a Monster Madness this October? I look forward to that every year!

  • September 6, 2013 at 12:46 pm

These “games” were never exported to my country, thankfully, but what we saw were a bunch of CASIO handhelds and others made in China. The CASIO ones were OK, but the other ones… snorting crap through your nose was more healthy.

  • Billy T

    September 6, 2013 at 12:58 pm

James, I think I know what your problem is with Bowling.

Know those arrows on the left side of the game? They’re used to help guide your throw. You press the down arrow to initiate the throw of the bowling ball. As the arm is wound back, press the ‘Up’ arrow to guide the ball into the pins.

  • Sharif Easton

    September 6, 2013 at 12:59 pm

I remember these think I used to have a few back in the day. That’s how shit they are I can’t even remember if I had one and if I did I didn’t play it for longer than a minute or 2. Loved the AVGN BULLSHIT MAN collaboration I have seen all the BULLSHIT MAN’S video’s and wondered for ages when you were going to talk about that shitty plastic packaging.

  • Brennan Martinez

    September 6, 2013 at 1:11 pm

Great video as always, but still no title card from Mike Matei? Why is that so taboo? Those were as great as the episodes themselves!

  • September 6, 2013 at 1:15 pm

I’m italian and if I will ever had to chose between having the daily coffee or watching new episodes of avgn, I would definitely drop coffee. Please James, never, ever stop doing these. The day shitty games will be over, I’ll program some more for you.

  • September 6, 2013 at 1:22 pm

Yes! The R-Zone! I had one of those and I still have the Virtua-Fighter cartridge!

  • DavidARice

    September 6, 2013 at 1:25 pm

I had a Sonic Tiger game.

  • September 6, 2013 at 1:29 pm

The Tiger Bowling Game was the first and only one I have left today. I almost bowled a perfect game on it once! Yours looks a little messed up, James. :)

  • September 6, 2013 at 1:33 pm

US games like this looks very normal and good next to soviet “similar” “consoles”. Trust me, they were super wierd. Wolf in ocean fighting octupuss to collct gold etc.

  • Chris Okeeffe

    September 6, 2013 at 1:51 pm

He should have closed it with the Gizmondo and the death of Tiger

  • ddt_Eagleeye

    September 6, 2013 at 1:58 pm

Absolutely hilarious! Great idea having a “You know what’s bullshit?” episode within the AVGN-episode. The part with the scissors to open a pack of scissor brought tears of joy to my eyes. Hate these fucking packages, too. :D

  • September 6, 2013 at 2:00 pm

I never had one of systems, per se, but I do remember when SEGA cut a deal with McDonald’s and had these portable gaming systems that used the same technology come with Happy Meals. Needless to say, they’re just a catastrophe of ass.

  • September 6, 2013 at 2:04 pm

I had the Ninja Gaiden one has a kid.

  • Travis McNabb

    September 6, 2013 at 2:09 pm

I had all those things. After having practically begged my dad to get me the R-Zone, once I recieved it I played it for about a minute or two then was like, “Fuck this piece of shit”, lol! It was aweful. Quite possibly the worst. In fact, yes, it was the worst thing ever imagined. I never even bothered with keeping it around for memories sake. I junked it instantly, lol! Fucking piece of shit. I hope the people that created these monstrocities is proud of themselves having ripped off all those poor little kids, myself included.

  • ToadRoad

    September 6, 2013 at 2:10 pm

I remember one of my habits as a kid was removing the door to the battery compartment and losing it. My dad always scolded me for not taking care of my belongings. Hope you upload this to youtube too!

  • September 6, 2013 at 2:19 pm

    great AND FUNNY VIDEO

  • September 6, 2013 at 2:19 pm

The scissors to open scissors line! When you screamed WRIST WATCH! I actually laughed my head off and then had to applaud – this whole video was genius.

  • September 6, 2013 at 2:25 pm

LOL the full house tiger game is awesome for just existing!

  • September 6, 2013 at 2:27 pm

The Bullshitman cameo was very welcome. Incorperatng your family of characters into a single work is an excellent idea. You are very talented and I wish you further success.

  • Ericco79

    September 6, 2013 at 2:42 pm

I’ll always remember the Street Fighter 2 handheld game commercial! “You say you wanna be a street fighter?? You’re no street fighter! Not until you master the six world warriors of the Street Fighter 2 hand held game. Hundred hand slaps and rolling attacks, fireballs and hurricane kicks are your weapons! Beat 3 in a row: Zangief, Honda, Blanca, THEN we’ll talk!”

  • handsome pete

    September 6, 2013 at 2:48 pm

Those handheld games had the same problem as the Atari, there were all these developers trying to make it do things that it just couldn’t, except it was mostly just Tiger. Like almost every Tiger game tried to emulate scrolling, even though there are tons of games that don’t scroll and are kickass, like Punch-Out or Zelda or Donkey Kong. I had a handheld Donkey Kong ripoff and it was really fun, a great time-killer: and guess what, it wasn’t made by Tiger. The watch ones are probably the best, because they kept those games as simple as possible and didn’t try anything weird, they were so portable that it was kind of insane, and they actually were watches that told time, and even had alarm and stopwatch functions sometimes. Before cellphones, in a boring waiting room or waiting for someone at a bus stop or whatever, they were the shit.

  • September 6, 2013 at 2:51 pm

great episode. this is one of the episodes where literally all the game and hardware just suck. funny bullshit man cameo.

after the wierd toxic avenger episode this one is back on track.

One thing I gotta give to Tiger, the Pokédex it launched was 100% translated to spanish for us at Latin America. Not even the Pokémon games did that (except for the upcoming Pokémon X and Y and some rare Red and Blue versions)

  • Remeday

    September 6, 2013 at 3:38 pm

I also had that shitty torture device known as the R Zone. The little plastic piece broke off and it got extremely uncomfortable wearing it. I agree James, The R Zone is the worst video game console I ever played. Great episode by the way. It’s been a while!

    • thegreat81

  • September 6, 2013 at 3:46 pm

I was 9 and had the Virtual Boy and the R-Zone and I loved them both when I was a kid. I still like Teleroboxer but the rest of the games suck major ass!!!

  • September 6, 2013 at 3:54 pm

A bullshit episode inside an AVGN episode?! I THINK IM IN HEAVEN!

  • Akytalusia

    September 6, 2013 at 3:55 pm

so much nostalgia in this episode. i owned like half of those games you featured. and i thought they were alright at the time. poor man’s handhelds indeed. they do suck though. one kid i was associated with had a zelda wristwatch. i always wanted that one. never got to play it though. i continue to imagine it was cooler than it probably was. :P

    September 6, 2013 at 4:19 pm

Great and funny video, James! Good ol’ running gags as well as unexpected jokes. Even the most forgettable parts of video game history have been adequately commemorated now.

  • GalloogaJoe

    September 6, 2013 at 4:29 pm

I used to play a lot of Tiger Handheld games when I was a kid. Before I owned a Sega it’s all I had. And once I owned a Sega I would only be able to get a new game once in a while, and I would play the fuck out of it, until I had beaten it 10 times over and wanted something different. So I would get a Tiger game. I guess they were kind of like my fix in between getting real video games. Also I had a really shitty Robocop wrist game. Ugh.

  • September 6, 2013 at 4:30 pm

At first I was like “damn, I must have been one of the only kids who was smart enough not to bug their parents for one of these shitty games” then I was like… Oh… I had that bowling game.

  • Yan

    September 6, 2013 at 4:34 pm

GREAT Video!! definitely one my favorite! it’s was really fun to watch!!! i remember having one of those, when i was a kid. xD

  • September 6, 2013 at 4:40 pm

I remember this crap when I was a kid. Geez. At least with the Game and Watch games, they were sorta fun and upped the speed and difficulty as you play through. And you could play updated versions of them on the Game Boy/Color/Advance.

Can anyone help, because the peisode isn’t loading for me. The video says it’s loading episode, but i’ve been here for five minutes and it hasn’t done a dam thing. This is like torture to e, that I can’t wtach this new episode that i’m really wanting to see right now, but I can’t, because the dam video won’t load for me. Does ayone know what’s happening to it for me?

  • September 6, 2013 at 5:06 pm

Nerd, I’ve always had mad respect for you ever since I saw you call out some of the egregious typos that plague these shitty games. So in that vein, I’m going to let “revolutionalized” (8:03) slide. But I’ve got my eye on you …

lol i used to have that shinobi handheld. I had a sudden flashback of playing it in elementary school as soon as I saw it in this vid. They suck ass, but w/o any alternative at the time, these tiger games were a decent little diversion for me.

  • September 6, 2013 at 5:28 pm

I had two, a Tom and Jerry and a Toy Story one.
At the time, i liked the Toy Story one. I mean a whole lot, i did amazing high scores on that.
Why? Because i was a dumb fucking kid.
I had a SNES, why i wasted my time on this, even when i got my Gameboy Color i was still into the Toy Story one, beating the high score on monthly basis. Again, why?
Thanks to something, i noticed out bad the Wristwatch ones were at the time. The other shat, i didn’t even knew they existed and i’m cool like that.
Great video, James! This hit right in the childhood and made me laugh and cry (at myself as a kid) for all the video.
Now i even remember when i bought some kind of shoes that made special sound effects when you made some kinda bullshit step that i don’t know.
Was like i called the 900-Bullies-On-Me, stupid kid-myself…

  • September 6, 2013 at 5:31 pm

Does the Game.com say “Fuck You” when you turn it on, it sounds like it.

  • September 6, 2013 at 5:40 pm

I remember the tiger portable game things…i had a few of those..don’t know why i played them..they were like a cancer .. a cancer that you were brainwashed into liking..i think i have a spider-man one hanging around somewhere still.. better find it and dispose of it.. in a vat of acid.

  • September 6, 2013 at 5:41 pm

Ah, good times… I think I had 1 or 2. Yes, my family was kinda poor and couldn’t get Nintendo. Instead my father got me Spectrums, Atari ST and Falcons. I also had a little console that had square blocks, 6 games in one, one of them was tetris. I also had a Tamaguchi.

  • September 6, 2013 at 5:54 pm

Holy s$%*. You are so good at this. Please keep making more. You are certainly the most entertaining internet personality =)

  • September 6, 2013 at 6:05 pm

man, the last time I had a tiger electronics device was the Jurassic Park game when I was a kid. I remember that when I was little, I always wanted a Talkboy. never got one, but it does bring back old memories. might as well have James dust off those old Pog sets too while drinking a can of Tab (which they still sell btw).

At 3:20, had that exact Batman one in your left hand :D
Also the Teename Mutant Turtles one (was white with green and red lettering/highlights). Ah man, I could never get far in them though. Just weren’t like a traditional console you plugged into the TV, or a Gameboy/Gamegear for that matter.

  • September 6, 2013 at 6:13 pm

Does anyone remember the old Virtua Boy like handhelds? For a while now ive been trying to remember what they were exactly and find them i just remember you hold it up to your eyes like the virtua boy (they were much smaller though) and iirc it was LCD games. One i remember was a tank game.

  • September 6, 2013 at 6:30 pm

Mr Rolfe: Did you ever had the chance to talk to some of the people at those game companies like ljn for example. Would be nice to have some comments of these games from the developers or other poeple from their own point of view.

  • September 6, 2013 at 6:33 pm

I’m also surprised that James never mentioned the Star Fox handheld watch as a comparison. unlike the Tiger Electronics Handheld Watch, the Star Fox Game Watch was an LCD game made by Nintendo & Nelsonic that you had to buy 2 boxes of Corn Pops just to get it. yeah, anytime you go to a grocery store and buy a box of Corn Pops, you’re gonna think about Star Fox.

  • September 6, 2013 at 6:39 pm

    September 6, 2013 at 6:41 pm

HAHAHAHA YES! These shitty Tiger Electronic games from my childhood are finally getting reviewed! I had assumed they maybe too pathetic to talk about, but I guess I was wrong. There was plenty of material here.

You nailed it with the poverty option line. These were all I had because it was all my family could afford. People would get them for me as birthday and Christmas gifts. And they were pretty fun, until you played the real thing! After we got a Sega Genesis with Sonic 2 for Christmas, I never touched these things again!

It’s nice to see you thrash the… Oh? It’s GameCom, not Game.com? That’s news to me. Yeah, I’ve heard that thing is pretty bad, and from what I’ve seen and read, and what you showed me here, that sure seems to be true.

Oooooh yes, the R-zone. I had that one, but it was the “X.P.G” handheld version. It was still pretty bad, and yeah, it made my vision cloudy and stuff. Not cool. I had an X-wing game for it. I didn’t play it for very long, haha.

(I think sometimes the website eats my comments? um)

This was a great episode. My favorite in a while. I like when the Nerd gives backstory on what he’s reviewing. I love console episodes, and this one had an entire line of them, even better! I liked the Bullshit man appearance, it had good timing, it was fun and aproppiate (I prefer when guests don’t steal the spotlight of the episode, unlike the recent guest episodes). Fun, well-balanced, interesting and nostalgic episode (yeah, i owed a few of those *sigh*). Great job!

Going back to the good old well structured episodes of the Nerd I see. That’s perfect! The “bits” part was very funny and clever. I can’t believe there is a Street Fighter of those. Amazing video, James! It may not have a lot of special effects, costumes, or wacky scripting, but the simplicity and thoroughness of your review probably help to make this one of my favorite AVGNs. The story of Tiger was one that NEEDED to be told as only the Nerd could tell it. It’s a chapter that everyone collectively willed themselves to forget (whether subconsciously, or out of pure shame) and yet, is something that never should be forgotten.

Allow me to answer your question in the video. Tiger handheld games are not video games. They are toys. They are cheap gimmicks wrapped in fancy packaging designed to rake in the most amount of money for the least amount of effort and investment. They are not designed as experiences to be remembered, but rather distractions to quiet fussy children. They hold about as much meaning as the prize in a Happy Meal. And they get discarded just as easily.

In a way, this video is kind of a sad moment for me. It’s impossible for me to imagine the Nerd talking about a worse set of games than these. Sure, there are plenty of crappy games still out there, but Tiger is the worst of the worst. It almost feels like AVGN has hit its peak. As though the best (worst) is now behind us. As if it’s all downhill (uphill?) from here.

But then I remember that the AVGN series isn’t about measuring and comparing putrid games to each other, but rather exploring how uniquely putrid each one is on its own. I’ve no doubt that future episodes will be just as enjoyable, not because the subject material is worse, but because they are bad in new and different ways.

Again, keep up the great work! And if I may make a bit of a request? Would it be possible to re-add episode numbers next to the episode names in the archive? Sometimes it’s just more convenient to search for specific episodes by number. :)

Hey James that tiger papper sheet you pull out at 9:00 is actually for the gizmondo. The worst selling video game console of all time. It has nothing to do with tiger electronics.

If you want to do the research on the gizmondo by all means go ahead but it is a level of gaming hell that may prove hard for even the nerd to crack as only 24 000 units were sold before production was halted.

Wow I remember these shitty Tiger handhelds from the late 80′s and early 90′s. Sad to say, I was addicted to playing the Batman: Animated Series Tiger game, it was bad ass from what I remember. I can only imagine how horrible it would be if I had to replay it today.

Nice change of pace after so many NES game reviews. Love the cameo and the Batman and Robin game review, it did sound as if he had finished a good shit. And thank you, that damn baby dinosaur going “Gotta Love Me!” annoyed the fuck out of me and I hated that show. I never understood why so many thought that was remotely entertaining.

  • September 7, 2013 at 1:01 am

As horribly backwards in comparison to the GameBoy the Tiger handhelds were, I will say that their Casper game and Sonic 2 game were actually pretty good and actually had some signs of progression and a sense of getting good at them if you actually tried. Though looking back, yeah, they were pretty crappy.

I started watching the AVGN episodes on youtube then moved on to the Godzilla monster madness specials and haven’t stopped watching since. I just want to thank you guys for everything that you do and hope that you keep up the good work. Ya’ll have reminded me of a bunch of things that I have forgotten about my childhood and it makes me feel good to know that other people have shared the same experiences in pop-culture as I have. Well this was unexpected. It was a dream of mine recently (literally, I had a dream) that there would bea new AVGN episode soon. It wouldn’t have killed me if there hadn’t been one because I know how busy James is in general, on EVERYTHING, including the movie so it’s REALLY nice that he can put together time SOMEHOW to make this for us.

Thank you James. You son of a windrammer fuck.

  • Lanlost

    September 7, 2013 at 4:03 am

Also, I just wanted to say that when I acutally started this video and realized “Oh, Tiger handheld games” (I didn’t really read the title. I just saw “AVGN” and clicked out of excitement) I thought… “well, weird and not traditional.” I don’t know why. It just seemed like these would belong in one of your side projects/reviews, not an AVGN episode.

But now that I think about it.. they are games. They are DEFINITELY games and to say they barely qualify would be dumb, even if there isn’t much to them. They ARE definitely games, and it sort of makes me surprised that it’s taken this long to review them because, even though I haven’t watched the episode yet, they obviously are of mostly dubious quality.

    I guess we’ll see, eh?… watching COMMENCE!

  • September 7, 2013 at 5:48 am

    September 7, 2013 at 7:03 am

Oh god that was one of your best episodes yet, the way i see it. *love*

About the Tiger handheld games, they may have been cheap and crappy alternatives of the GameBoy, but there were some of them that were actually descent, even good on occasions. And most likely that’s why people kept buying them despite their obvious flaws. Only problem : to have a chance of buying one of those better ones, you had to only buy those based on no popular franchise. I had a few of them over my kid years, and one of them was actually quite awesome, it was just a ninja throwing stars and bombs to incoming ninjas, no franchise whatsoever, but it was so good it followed me from the 80s to my adulthood past the 2000s (where the electronic components fell apart, sadly).

The controls are not so bad as they look, you just have to remember that for most of them, you have to tell the game you want to fall from your jump by pressing a down button if any. They rarely handle a jump timer. And even if they do you’re still in or out of a jump state, which is quite static.

I also discovered a glitch that i think may affect all those games, not just my favorite one : once you’re trained yourself with one
to the point you can score more digits that the game can show, the score will go back to 0. It’s not that it can’t show the additionnal digit, it literrally forgets about it. And that’s how, after playing a hour without dying and scoring millions, you die 3 times because of your exhaustion and see you did not make it to the high scores because you scored only 20 points…

Wrist games, GameCON, R-Zone… Never heard of those. Apparently, that’s why i’m still sane. Awesome job on these, Nerd, thanks. ;)

But my favorite part in this episode is the surprise of a Bullshit section. Maybe you should invite the Nerd’s friends some more. What about Bad Luck Bootsy testing some evil turd of a game ? :D

Funny that you mentioned that Taxman game on Apple II. Okay, James. Here is some random trivia:

In 1997 Tiger Electronics released a computer to hook up on TV called the “Tiger Learning Computer”. Basically the machine was an Apple IIe using cartridges instead of floppy discs. What makes this machine so special is, that it was not an Apple II clone. It was officially licensed from Apple. I found this story by accident today, so read it here.

Needless to say that Steve Jobs canceled the hole thing when he came back later in 1997.

I had a bunch of Tiger lcds when I was a kid. I kept and even played them once in awhile even after I owned a Super Nintendo and a Gameboy. They were obviously inferior games, but they had a certain charm to them. I just went to pica-pic (online lcd game emulator) and picked a game at random to see if I could recall how they could still hold my interest as a kid even after I experienced better games. In this case the game was “Coffee House,” which I had never played before. Here’s what I came up with:

    1. Many of these games were actually rather surreal, with unusual visuals and mechanics and little “tricks” you could discover. For instance, in the Coffee House game I just played, the waitress can change her position super-humanly fast, and since there’s no real animation it’s pretty bizarre, almost as if she’s teleporting. In a Dinosaur game I used to have you play as a caveman who could jump and stay suspended in the air indefinitely by rapidly swinging his club left and right. In the Super Street Fighter game Ken could shoot fireballs almost as fast as you could hit the buttons. Some of the rules weren’t immediately obvious and it took some experimentation to figure them out.

    2. Because they didn’t have fluid animated graphics, images of enemies, items, and the like could appear or disappear very suddenly. You often had to concentrate and react very quickly and accurately in order to dodge an attack, or to hit an enemy or collect an item in the split-second it was on screen before it gets away. Like lcd whack-a-mole or something.

    3. They tended to have strangely memorable and idiosyncratic sound effects. In the Konami TMNT handheld the turtles would dramatically scream “Yeeoowwww!” whenever they were hit, or “Y-Y-Yeeoowww!” if they were hit multiple times in succession. And bosses’ names were announced with eccentric intonation when they suddenly appeared, e.g. “Bebop” was said rather shortly/curtly, and “Shredder” was announced as if one of the turtles was shouting it hysterically. One of the Looney Toons/Bugs Bunny handhelds had a very repetitive tune that my brother and I remember to this day. And then you had the distinctive Game & Watch-style beeps and clicks giving you constant feedback unless you turned the sound off: small beeps and clicks for movement, long and/or unique sounds when you collected a rare/periodic item, discouraging sounds when you got hit or lost a life.

  • September 7, 2013 at 11:44 am

These shitty handheld games are still around.

Ashens reviews some nearly every month.

I have three things to say regarding your video. 1) liked it. 2) Use a can opener instead of scissors for blister packs and 3) Something you have probably seen, but if not you may like http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1944625487/omni-move-naturally-in-your-favorite-game/

    • Darth Killer

      September 7, 2013 at 1:48 pm

What if your can opener is sold in a blister pack ? xD

Besides, no matter the tool you use, it’s still a very dangerous type of packaging, one false move and you can very badly cut yourself deep. Simple paper can cut you too, but with the blister pack, you’re putting so much effort with or without a tool you become very susceptible to such false move. Happenned to my fingers several times, and once saw someone cut the inner side of his hand all the way through.

As a final note, it is supposed to make it harder for thieves to take the item, but do they really think they can’t bypass that ? I don’t recall anyone saying theft having dropped thanks to blister packs. All in all, i agree with Bullshit Man on this one : IT’S BULLSHIT !

  • September 8, 2013 at 12:11 am

Haha! Sweet! New AVGN!! Awesome work doing the Tiger games. I had a few growing up as a kid because they were cheap, only around $20 in places like Target, though you *could* find them even cheaper at discount stores and the like (I found one at a Pic n Save for around $10 when I was a kid). I remember these games being hard as fuck too. I never could beat them, though, I got incredibly close several times. I remember having Simon’s Quest, Batman, Mega Man 3, and Double Dragon. Man… I’ve got such frustrating memories of coming so close to beating those piece of shit games…

  • September 8, 2013 at 12:36 am

dude! don’t remember what vid i saw no more than a week ago, but it had game.com in it and it looked terrible. first thing i thought of was, my avgn bud so needs to talk about this. low and behold, u have. great vid, keep up the good work.

What a great episode. I love how it combines the horrific handhelds everyone knows about and then ends up teaching most of something new with the unholy Virtual Boy ripoff. I appreciate the hard work you put into production, but also into the research and writing side of these vids!

  • September 8, 2013 at 12:53 am

    all your comments are ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • September 8, 2013 at 12:55 am

I regretfully had an R-Zone. It was the worst…I remember we had Virtua Fighter for it…talk about a let down. And don’t get me started on the regular handheld games…we had so many! I shudder thinking of all the money wasted on those while more Ninja Turtles just sat on the shelves. Ah well. Good video, James!

Love this review! I had the Batman wrist game. It was horrible. My aunt thought she was so cool by giving it to me for my 10th birthday. It was a piece of crap, but at least she tried. This review had some of the best new one liners. Great vid.

  • Lorfa

    September 8, 2013 at 2:25 am

I had a tiger double dragon handheld, took it with me in my lunchbox when I went to elementary school. I had lunchables in there, salami I think. After that it always smelled like a salami lunchable. This actually made it stink less.

Those things were so horrible, I can’t believe I ever owned any. I’m pretty sure I had at least 3 though.

It’s like we all got assraped by tiger and this video is therapy for the repressed memories haha

    September 8, 2013 at 6:48 am

I remember these. Although I am not sure if they were Tiger, but I’m taking your word for it..
The one I had was a baseball game where you needed to catch baseballs as they came across the field. It was very challenging and also quite fun. So I cannot really say that it was a bad game.

  • September 8, 2013 at 9:06 am

By far, the most entertaining tiger games I have played were Run N’ Jump and Toy Story. These games had levels, bosses and “ends” (quotes because if you beat the game, you go back to the beginnings and you keep playing for score). Tiger games tried really hard to think of everything, and for 10 bucks, why wouldn’t you give it to your kid to get them to shut up. If your parents bought this for you, it’s either you were poor or they didn’t give a shit about you. “Take it and shut the fuck up,” said Tiger to its consumer base. “Take it and shut the fuck up,” said the consumer base to its children.

  • September 8, 2013 at 10:12 am

Who can ever forget these damned Tiger games…lol GREAT review, James. I had no idea they made a home console and a VB knockoff?? Are they still around by chance? lol wouldn’t surprise me. Tiger games…in HD!

  • September 8, 2013 at 2:01 pm

I’ve been wondering when the R-Zone would get brought up. I, for some reason, got one of these gifted to me when they came out and it was the worst thing I had ever played in my life. Seeing it again just reminds me how miserable they really were. Whoever broke the eyepiece of yours did you a huge favor!

I really dug this episode man. Looks like this was a lot of work. Much thanks for bringing back some memories. If I remember right I had a Tetris watch at some point, I don’t think it was too wretched but who knows…well, you would know I guess. :)

  • Sammit

    September 8, 2013 at 2:36 pm

Oh god, that’s it. I had the R-Zone as a kid. I could never remember what it was called or anything, I just remembered something that hooks up to your eye and is just red. I think my parents only got it for me because it wasn’t expensive. That’s the reason Tiger was so successful. An NES game costed like fifty bucks whereas a Tiger game costed just a few bucks. I also had a Tiger game where you were Bugs Bunny, and the goal was to run along a path getting carrots.

I have been watching these videos since I was at uni and they are very funny! I just had to comment on the Tiger games as they bring back memories of my childhood. I just had the Beauty and the Beast one, but I got so mad when I couldn’t see what to do in the sunlight! These games probably contributed to the obesity crisis we have now as you could only play them inside and not in direct sunlight. The game kinda freaked an 8 year old me out at first when you switch it on. This is because you see all the sprites flash before Level 1 appears. However, being a diligent reader of instruction manuals, I didn’t have to struggle too much to work out what to do! I think your comment about making games more accessible in the semi-serious bit was good. They weren’t all bad and were certainly a cheaper alternative to Game Boys and Game Gears. That R Type thing looked like it may give you eye strain though! Great video!!

  • September 8, 2013 at 7:46 pm

Funniest episode of the year! LOL!!!

I never knew there was a Full House Tiger game, WTF!?

AVGN you keep blowin’ my mind! Thanks for warning me of these shitty games.

    September 8, 2013 at 9:26 pm

I had the dreaded Virtual Boy rip-off. I forgot what it was called for a while. I remember playing the games twice. Then I just started using it to pretend to be a cyborg, so I can’t say my childhood was fucked too badly from it. Thank God I had a good imagination.

  • Paulballsftw

    September 8, 2013 at 9:42 pm

That is cool that you talked about the Tiger games. When I was younger my friend had a few that I played but I never had one of my own. I remembered them being OK to play and there was ways to get through it as you get better at them. But after watching this I don’t think I would go back playing them again. By the way opening those packages were bullsht. I used to cut it and then rip the rest open but I always gotten a plastic cut when I did.

    September 9, 2013 at 10:59 am

Everyone I knew had one of these damned Tiger handhelds, but I never owned one. I would always think I wanted one, then look at it in the store (there was usually one lying around that had been opened), and change my mind.

I did have one of the little watch games; my dad found it at a yardsale or something and picked it up for me. I spent maybe five minutes trying to figure it out before I gave up and tossed it into the closet to be forgotten.

But they made one of these damned things based on Full House? WHY?!?!

  • Hitokiri Akins

    September 9, 2013 at 12:05 pm

I had quite a few of these things as a kid. You could get them for five or six bucks. I don’t remember them being as bad as James says, but when it’s all you’ve got, you’re having fun.

But he’s right; looking back, they are horrible. I’ve programmed more complex games in a VB class in college.

  • September 9, 2013 at 5:00 pm

Congratulations, James! One of the best episodes in a long time! It had continuity with previous episodes, touched a very important chapter in video game history, had the perfect amount of anger, and the crossover with You Know What’s Bullshit was awesome!

Now what I’d like to see is a Board James review of the Street Fighter II board game… And that begs to be a crossover with the Nerd too!

  • Smeghead420

    September 9, 2013 at 7:41 pm

James. Awesome coverage. Great variety. KILLER to see the rage back in the show. Man, THIS was a great Nerd video. Great job. Can’t wait for the movie.

  • September 9, 2013 at 9:21 pm

Yeah I used to have the Chip n’ Dale game, It was okay at the time. I also had a Ninja Turtle one. I wonder if James would be interested in that game. Maybe not because it was based off of the water stage from Ninja Turtles 1 for the NES.

  • September 9, 2013 at 9:22 pm

After a long time, finally a good episode and even Bullshit-man made an appearance, I did not expect that lol

    Great job James!

  • September 9, 2013 at 10:58 pm

Tiger was cool I had Terminator 2, Pit Fighter,Super Street Fighter 2, Then I had played Ninja Gaiden ,The Mask, Tale Spins ,War Hawk ,some racing game And the Wrist I had a power ranger, I even played Game.com but can’t remember the name of them and I’m suppose to because this was in the late 90′s.

    September 10, 2013 at 2:40 am

So very true. These things sucked bad but they still hooked us in by having a license we couldnt resist. I remember playing the adventures of batman and robin one all the time before the snes game came out since i loved the show so much.

    • Hitokiri Akins

      September 10, 2013 at 7:28 am

That’s what happened to my brother and me. We had Double Dragon 2, Sonic 2, Captain Planet, Jurassic Park, a Simpsons where Bart had to catch cupcakes, a wrestling game where Stone Cold Steve Austin was the face, which we got near 2000, I might add, and a few others, I don’t remember. We threw them out once we finally had real jobs and bought our own Gameboys.

  • September 10, 2013 at 10:36 am

You think that’s bad? There’s worse.

Imagine a commercial, with a cockpit. Yeah, a front F-16 looking thing with wings and everything. And the commercial shows a bloody flight-simulator; I don’t know if it was an 8-bit game or PC game like Falcon, but that’s what it looked like. That’w what it looked like on the pictures on the box in the toy store. And it’s cheep to. You’re thinking: awesome! Did you know how powerful a PC you needed to run a decent flight simulator, and what that cost? I should have known, right? But come one, I was a kid, and even then I knew you could pull off stuff with much lesser hardware if that hardware is built to do just that one thing.

I don’t know it was actually Tiger electronics, but it was just like a Tiger Electronics game. A piece of low-level crap, a background, some monochrome bullshit; and it wasn’t even bloody portable! What’s the point of having that cheap non-game crap if you can’t bring it with you on the bus!?

And you know what’s worse? The jet was on the screen! You build a cockpit for who knows how much development cost, and the stupid game you put on it, doesn’t even give you a cockpit view!

And then the stupid thing broke down in less than a weak.

    So yeah, there’s worse.

    • September 10, 2013 at 7:15 pm

they were cheap. so cheap in fact that it would be more likely to see someone playing them at a local Kaiser Permanente or some kind of waiting room at a doctor’s office. sitting right next to a box of Connect 4. the only thing that Tiger Electronics came out with that would even be remotely fun were those Talkboy devices from the 2nd Home Alone film. they also came out with far superior toys like Skip It, Lazer Tag, Brain Warp, Giga Pets, & Furby’s.

    • September 10, 2013 at 7:23 pm

Tiger Electronics were in deed a temporary fad just like Beanie Babies, Tamagotchi, Slap Bracelets, Gogo’s Crazy Bones, Big Mouth Billy Bass, Thighmaster, Razor Scooters, Segways, Crazy Frog, Pogs, Sleeved Blankets, Freedom Fries, Cabbage Patch Kids, Tickle Me Elmo, Etch A Sketch, Pokemon Trading Cards, and Digital Monsters (most commonly known as Digimon). just to name a few.

They’re still shipping these exact same “popstation” games out of China; changing only the title, company name, & plastic shell. The only technological advace they’ve made is color graphics.

  • September 10, 2013 at 12:38 pm

getting off topic a bit, I have an idea that would be cool for this year. either during or after Monster Madness, why not have James do a review this year for a Halloween Special featuring the Doom games for it’s 20th anniversary? just like when he reviewed Ghosts N Goblins for Halloween last year, why not do the same this year with Doom for it’s 20th anniversary?

  • September 10, 2013 at 12:43 pm

how about it James & Mike? an AVGN Halloween Special Episode featuring the Doom games. a perfect way to celebrate the Halloween season by shooting demons from hell . you can even end the episode with the Doom 3 theme from Tweaker. imagine James at the end of that episode holding a BFG in his hands. in my opinion, that would be the perfect AVGN Halloween Special. 20 years later, and it still kicks ass.

The only Tiger console I own is the Tiger Electronics Invaders from 1998. After watching this video I decided to look for some info about the Invaders console, but besides some really lacking info from the handheld museum website (there was only the info that this console existed) I haven’t found anything. Now I’m really curious if it is so rare, or is it so common that noone care ;)

I remember those! I had so many of those fucking Tiger games because my family was too cheap to buy me anything good. It was just a way to hand me novelty shit to keep me happy without spending lots of money. I played the hell out of them for about a week and then forgot all about them until James brought them up.

James also had me laughing all over again in this one. The comment about “opening scissors with scissors” fucking killed me.

Weak episode, it could have been so much better. James is trying too hard on bringing back the old Nerd’s cliches and catch phrases, just let it flow more naturally. I enjoyed the bullshit man cross-over thing, and my opinion is that you should focus on innovative things like that in your newer episodes, as you did in nintendo world championship. Sorry for the english btw, greetings from brazil.

In my times I remember to play that batman and X-men actually. And It became that popular, many chinese markets did actually sold many Tiger clones (in my country). You might become crazy if you see what things do chinese sell here… Even Burger King and Mc donalds had the balls to create those wirst games for Sonic and Pokemon, amazing

Thanks for the video, sir! I had a few of these growing up, and I didn’t think they were that bad. :) Simon’s Quest was rough, and Altered Beast was pretty craptacular, but I remember being the first kid in study hall to beat the first Double Dragon, so I gotta admit enjoying it that much… The Tetris watch worked pretty well, but I don’t think Tiger made that one… As bad as these games were, try looking at some of the games that board game comapnies made in the 70′s. I remember hating a mattel football game. That thing was just red lines. Anyway, thanks a lot!

These last two AVGN episodes have not been as entertaining to watch. It all feels so synthetic now. I feel as if there is too much focus on the acting. I wouldn’t go as far as to say they’re overdoing it, but it’s gradually inching in that direction.

I remember seeing these games at K-Mart in the late 90′s and I used to think “Who the hell would actually pay 20 dollars for this?” (sadly that’s how much they usually go for on eBay even today) I loved the Nintendo wrist watch games like the Zelda one but the Tiger games? They were a piece of sh#t! LOL

I remember playing these occasionally (i think my sister got the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ version one christmas). but I’m quite certain I never actually owned one. I was lucky…

  • October 6, 2013 at 12:53 pm

Holy Crap this brought back a bunch of memories. Me and my friends were playing this crap even in the mid 90′s.

I remember I had Mega Man 2, X-Men and my cousin gave me Snakes Revenge. I think my mom threw them all out when I finally got a Gameboy in like 98 or 99.

I kinda wish I still had them, but seeing them go for 20 bucks on ebay? Screw that.

I just love how people fight on here,People just need to relax and think before you type.I thought we are suppose to be here and talk about the Nerd Vidz & not bash other people,To make yourself look more important.I think internet gives people too much power to insult & talk trash to people,Because most of these people would never say it to someone face. Can’t Wait for the next AVGN DVD,Hopefully it will come out by Christmas

What fascinates me the most about this video is the fact that your Tiger games still work. The only thing I remember about these things was that they stopped working after a week.

These shit LCD games are still being made under names like VTech, Unbranded, Popstation and of course Tiger.

The only ones which had a reletive decent playability factor was Nintendo Game and Watch but even some of them turned into shit when the interchangeable Gameboy DMGreen come out but at least they are actually semi playable and rare too now.
