Top 1 Shark Movies

Mike Matei / August 4th, 2013

In time for the traditional Discovery channel’s shark week, Cinemassacre has a big video planned (coming soon). But first, let’s look at the best shark movies… or how many good ones are there?

Awesome! Jaws is the definitely the only one worth counting.

  • Roth Sothy

    August 4, 2013 at 3:15 pm

haha, I hope to see Sharknado (and Sharknado 2) in that Top 40

  • SilverShadow333

    August 4, 2013 at 3:15 pm

Thomas Jane and LL Cool J made “Deep Blue Sea” a SOMEWHAT watchable shark movie. Have you seen that one yet James? :3 It came out back in 1999. It wasnt SUPER bad, but it wasnt great either. It was at least watchable the first time around….I would have put it 2nd after Jaws.

    • August 5, 2013 at 1:39 am

Deep Blue Sea should be on this list.

      • spvtryan

        August 5, 2013 at 7:36 pm

Hahaha this top 1 list is awesome but I do have to to also agree Deep Blue Sea is great too. Just recently watched it again, it’s hilarious and the tension never stops. Love it.

    • Haseo55

      August 5, 2013 at 10:12 pm

have to agree, you could call it a guilty pleasure, but i enjoyed deep blue sea, it may not be great but its not bad either

    • karel1

      August 10, 2013 at 4:23 pm

He already did; in the Top 40 Worst Shark Movies. Although I agree with you guys, Deep Blue Sea was actually Good by Horro Shark Movie Standards.

  • August 4, 2013 at 3:16 pm

Well, I think Sharknado is gonna be the best movie of the year. Tara Reid will finally get that much deserved oscar.

  • August 4, 2013 at 3:19 pm

I would honestly love an actual “top 40 shitty shark movies”. Or more realistically, a top 10. Hilarious video anyway!

  • August 4, 2013 at 3:31 pm

Cool! Can’t wait! Dinoshark from 2011 has to be on there! Same with sharknado!

  • johnpseudo

    August 4, 2013 at 3:40 pm

“Jaws” is probably the reason, why I`m afraid to swm in open water.
Scared the shit out of me as a kid !

    How about TOP 10 trashiest Trash-movie-scenes ? :D

  • rsaotome

    August 4, 2013 at 3:46 pm

    :) Best list ever! :P

Can’t wait for the Top 40!

  • johnpseudo

    August 4, 2013 at 3:47 pm

Alfred Hitchcocks “The birds” is a shitty shark-movie ! There wasn`t a single one in it – it doesn`t get shittier than that ! ;)

  • August 4, 2013 at 3:51 pm

Deep Blue Sea was an enjoyable shark movie. Even had Samuel Jackson in it.

  • poncho

    August 4, 2013 at 3:59 pm

omfg! its gonna be fcukin awsssuuum..:)

  • wEEman33

    August 4, 2013 at 4:02 pm

Deep Blue Sea was good. Fuck the haters.

    Also,

“THEY ATE ME! A FUCKING SHARK ATE ME!”

  • greedo

    August 4, 2013 at 4:13 pm

Lol! Hilarious! Fun fact about Jaws: Peter Benchley was a huge conservationist, and devoted his life to saving sharks and promoting shark education. (He loved the critters, and was horrified at the reputation that his book, and the subsequent film gave them).

  • GeedAwesome

    August 4, 2013 at 4:33 pm

Only 40 shitty shark movies? Has to be more than that.

  • August 4, 2013 at 4:37 pm

Sharknado was one of the greatest Shark movie. Better than Jaws! Oh Shit yep I said it.

  • erik37

    August 4, 2013 at 5:03 pm

hahaha….. that was good i think sharknado is a close 2 if not the best shark movie ever james come on man lol

  • Zach Bremer

    August 4, 2013 at 5:06 pm

Lol top 1, the only good thing about the shitty ones are the babes’ butts and knockers. They’re all stereotypical dumb teenagers. Much like most of the 80′s to present’s low budget horror films.

  • taykel

    August 4, 2013 at 6:24 pm

I can only think of one popular shark movie… Jaws of course! Never a fan of that film, I can understand why people like it so much. I can’t wait to see that countdown of worst shark movies. That should be really fun!

  • angryrider

    August 4, 2013 at 7:02 pm

John Barrowman aka Captain Jack Harkness aka Merlyn, was in a shitty shark movie, and he actually said this line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1XOfHax6Q8 And apparently this movie was so bad, that they kept it in.

  • Allen Lucas

    August 4, 2013 at 7:12 pm

That’s right! There’s only one great shark movie in existence and that’s Jaws. Never saw other shark movies and probably never will even after I’ll be watching this top 40 countdown!

I’m going to make it a tradition every Shark Week to watch Jaws on Blu-Ray (got it for my birthday last year and amazed by video and audio quality) because it’s my favorite movie of all time. Like you said James, the movie has memorable characters, great dialogue, suspenseful action, and a terrifying atmosphere. I’m sure the top 40 pales in comparison to this classic!

  • culwin

    August 4, 2013 at 7:15 pm

Shark Attack 3 has the best quote ever in the history of cinema.

  • ikensee

    August 4, 2013 at 7:33 pm

People from my area, I think, made a movie called, “Snow Shark.” I haven’t seen it, and I don’t want to see it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCywrFyN_R4

  • August 4, 2013 at 7:39 pm

    Sharknado better be on there.

It’s comes under so bad it’s good.

  • damon

    August 4, 2013 at 8:08 pm

    Well, that was short….

  • EchnaTron

    August 4, 2013 at 8:08 pm

Can’t wait for the Top 40! Looking foreward to it so much!

  • August 4, 2013 at 8:08 pm

The most amazing Top 1 countdown ever, James! :D

  • August 4, 2013 at 8:50 pm

I guess everyone was thinking you made a typo.

  • RandyPan

    August 4, 2013 at 9:23 pm

Dude, you suddenly reminded me of the villain from Terror Firmer.

Also, tell me you’re gonna play the clip of John Barrowman offer to eat Jenny McShane’s pussy.

    • bob bergeron

      August 4, 2013 at 11:22 pm

so YOURE the other person that has seen that movie!!! hey man, hows it goin!

  • August 4, 2013 at 9:32 pm

I like Deep Blue Sea better then Jaws.

    • spvtryan

      August 5, 2013 at 7:43 pm

Bold statement but I will say Deep Blue Sea is awesome and not bad.

  • Stephen Biggs

    August 4, 2013 at 10:02 pm

    August 4, 2013 at 11:59 pm

  • frakballz

    August 5, 2013 at 12:52 am

It needs to be 41, That new Megalodon “Documentary” (Mockumentary) by Discovery Channel was a bag of diarrhea dog turds that sat in the sun for a whole day.

  • August 5, 2013 at 1:08 am

That was brilliant.I was thinking the same thing before i started the video…what other shark movies are good?

Well the only other good ones are bad ones that get so silly its fun to watch.SHARKNADO anyone?

  • IlCretino

    August 5, 2013 at 1:34 am

I actually think Jaws 2 is the best shark movie…

  • acer aces

    August 5, 2013 at 1:44 am

Hello just registered tonite,I have been watching silently from afar for sometime.I haven t felt as excited to see something {40 shitty shark movies}since seeing the ‘goonies’ movie promo for the first time.If I may be so bold could I request you make a”Stallone Games” avgn video, and also review 2 films? The 2 films are ‘The Pit’{1981} starring sammy snyders and ‘castlefreak’{1995}.If you have the bees you can do necromantic of course.Thank-you sir.

  • ABOhiccups

    August 5, 2013 at 2:33 am

That Title makes me laugh! Because, there’s no Good Shark Movies! But Jaws is the only Best Shark Movie!

  • August 5, 2013 at 3:16 am

I hope it is really a Top 40, even if i have no doubt there is enough material to do even a Top 50 or 60 shitty shark movies.
Anyway, yes, Jaws is the only great shark movie ever done up till this point. The closest we got to it is Deep Blue Sea, but it’s just watchable, surely not great…

  • xeoneex

    August 5, 2013 at 3:23 am

Please please PLEASE don’t forget Sharknado…

    • August 5, 2013 at 4:38 am

eh, i’d rather see him review something more nostalgic but also on the same topic. I had in mind as my recommendation Street Sharks.

  • pleasetakeabow

    August 5, 2013 at 3:24 am

    SHARKNADO!!!!

  • Rambowl

    August 5, 2013 at 3:28 am

Thanks for spoiling the ending for me James!

  • August 5, 2013 at 4:27 am

funny how they keep making movies based on sharks or piranhas, but does anyone remember the films Orca or Barracuda? there have been way too many films based on real animals or genetically engineered animals. movies like Anaconda, Lake Placid, Bats, Boa, Python, Deep Blue Sea, The Birds, Arachnid, Arachnophobia, Killer Bees, Mosquito, The Mist, Cujo, Willard, Frogs, Curse Of The Komodo, Crocodile, Tremors, it’s f***ing endless.

  • August 5, 2013 at 4:34 am

beyond Jaws, Deep Blue Sea, & the recent Sharknado, there is also Bait 3D, Deep Blood, Dinoshark, Cruel Jaws, Hammerhead: Shark Frenzy, Open Water, Red Water, Shark Attack, Shark Swarm, The Reef, Tintorera, Mako: The Jaws Of Death, Megalodon, 12 Days of Terror, Shark Night 3D, Shark In Venice, Up From The Depths, Swamp Shark, 2-Headed Shark Attack, Jersey Shore Shark Attack, Monster Shark, Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus/Crocosaurus, Sand Sharks, Sharktopus, Super Shark, Snow Shark, and Ghost Shark.

  • August 5, 2013 at 4:36 am

actually, here’s some advice James. why not take advantage of Shark Week by reviewing the TV series Street Sharks. I have been waiting to hear your opinions on Street Sharks for a long while now. that would be Jawsome!

  • August 5, 2013 at 5:48 am

Please make sure you watch: “Mega Shark VS Giant Octopus” and “Mega Shark VS Crocosaurus” Nothing could possibly be more like what you’re looking for in shitty shark movies.

  • August 5, 2013 at 8:52 am

Hopefully this top 40 is actually coming. Can’t wait if it is :D

  • August 5, 2013 at 9:51 am

    Sharknado anyone???? +_+

  • Sean Lemay

    August 5, 2013 at 9:52 am

awesome can’t wait for the rest of this list.

  • August 5, 2013 at 12:51 pm

I REALLY hope you’re serious about the TOP 40 BAD SHARK MOVIES! There’s nothing better than a BAAAD monster movie. :P

  • clovernuts

    August 5, 2013 at 1:27 pm

Wow James! You mean you did not like Deep Blue Sea? I loved that movie. I do understand Sharknado and that stuff, but come on! LL Cool J has a foul mouthed friggin parrot! lols but seriously, That Sam Jackson scene was killer! I have do contest your opinion James. Deep Blue See was awesome.

  • August 5, 2013 at 2:11 pm

I saw Sharknado. It had TERRIBLE CGI. I also saw Dinoshark. It was okay.

  • August 5, 2013 at 2:14 pm

Sharktopus, sand sharks, shark attack 3, they all suck

  • August 5, 2013 at 2:23 pm

Hi James! after lurking Cinemassacre’s site for a long time I just decided to post here because I enjoy watching your vids, specially your trademark AVGN ^_^ so my “suggestion” for your Top 40 Shitty Shark movies is Gyo (aka: Tokyo Fish Attack)… also this will be the first time you review a crappy animated shark show but of course there are a lot of excellent animes, sadly from what I know all those don’t have any but you could add on that list cartoons outside Japan (like Street Sharks).

  • Lukas Sprehn

    August 5, 2013 at 2:50 pm

Do you have Jaws on blu-ray James?

  • August 5, 2013 at 2:58 pm

    can’t wait!

  • Mark Robirds Jr.

    August 5, 2013 at 5:26 pm

Actually I think there are some decent ones. The Reef was one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen, Deep Blue Sea was decent, Bait was surprisingly good, Jaws 2 was okay, I kinds of liked Shark Night for what it is.

  • zengie

    August 5, 2013 at 5:53 pm

    Sharktopus!

  • August 5, 2013 at 6:01 pm

Yes thats probably the one and only film with a shark that worth allot to wach.I am sick to see all the other movies based on sharks or killer mutand fishmen that try to copy in a bad way jaws. And you dont see anyting yet,a friend of mine said something about a movie that will called sharknado.

  • August 5, 2013 at 6:43 pm

    Awesome!

  • SethBlizzard

    August 5, 2013 at 7:26 pm

“40 Shitty Shark Movies” sounds entertaining. I hope Deep Blue Sea is on there. It has such terrible characterization for a movie that’s supposed to be taken seriously, and was I the only person who understood the female scientist’s motives?

    • spvtryan

      August 5, 2013 at 7:49 pm

There is no way it was supposed to be taken seriously. You leave your brain at the door and enjoy the chaos that ensues in the film. The helicopter crash/explosion that is caused by the shark pulling the cable attached to the stretcher with the poor scientist who already got his arm bit off…… Priceless.

  • spvtryan

    August 5, 2013 at 7:40 pm

If you definitely do the Top 40 shitty shark movies please at least make Deep Blue Sea like number 40 if you must.. I friggen LOVE that movie. Lol or follow it before Jaws 2.

  • turok818

    August 5, 2013 at 10:18 pm

Its obvious that Jaws is the ultimate when it comes to shark movies; however i dont think it is the only good one…..again granted it is one of the only good ones because out of the 100′s of shark movies creats nearly all of them suck. There are two that i felt were very good shark movies and those are: The Reef, and Deep Blue Sea……also for the top 40 worst shark movies….there is already people talking about sharktopus and all the other horrid shark movies…but there is one that i watched and just could not stand. I mean come on it had a guy with one arm, after having his other torn off, wrestle and kill a shark…..WITH ONE HAND it was so stupid and the movie was just awful. Its called Shark night

  • Aaron1375

    August 5, 2013 at 11:27 pm

That was pretty funny, but the title of the video gave away the payoff. You should have just titled it the ten best, which would have gotten our curiosity up as I sure as hell can’t think of all that many good shark movies other than Jaws. Part II was okay, almost a slasher quality to it as teens get picked off one by one. Part III was bad, but I still enjoy watching it as it is kind of cheesy fun. IV, that one is horrid, can’t even watch it. About the only other shark film I sort of enjoyed was Deep Blue Sea, which would have been better if not for the shitty looking CG sharks. I am looking forward to seeing where these films and more place in the shitty shark movies!

  • August 5, 2013 at 11:42 pm

Awesome, James! First time commenter, but long, LONG time fan!

I must say that all of your videos have ridiculous playback value, as I’ve seen pretty much all of them multiple times! If there was one critique I’d extend, and if I may be so bold (and I have no right to be, as if you’ve accomplished much more than I could ever dream of!), I’d say that some of your jokes lack a certain finesse. Which is no big deal! Again, I don’t mean to criticize, as there are many types of humor out there.

However, I mention all this because this video, short as it was, shocked me with that finesse! How priceless were the meta-ish jokes! Extremely well done!

Now, don’t get me wrong, your lack of that arrogant movie critic bullshit is what sets you apart. If you were more like that pompous horse’s ass the Nostalgia Critic I would’ve left a long time ago.

    Sincerely,
    An avid fan and investor.

    August 6, 2013 at 1:40 am

Go track down a copy of Great White (AKA The Last Shark, AKA El Ultimo Squallo), a movie that rips off Jaws 1 and 2 SO much that Universal sued it out of existance in under a week – and it is FUCKING GREAT! It’s by Enzo G. Castellari (the awesome Italian grindhouse director that did The Inglorious Bastards, 1990: The Bronx Warriors, and Escape from the Bronx) and starring Vic Morrow and James Franscicus. And did I mention that it is FUCKING AWESOME?

Not only will I agree about this but even my dad would agree. He would love this

  • Ben_from_G-town

    August 6, 2013 at 5:54 am

Wow hahahaha HILARIOUS VIDEO! Though I don’t know if Jaws is the only good shark movie. Deep Blue Sea was good, too. And wow, top 40? I didn’t realize that there were so many shark movies! :D Will Shark with Burt Reynolds be on it? :P

  • August 6, 2013 at 10:55 am

Hm Jaws is indeed the best shark movie, but Jaws 2 wasn’t that bad and I also liked Deep Blue Sea

  • Tiffany Knox

    August 6, 2013 at 11:43 am

I love Jaws…it was gross and yucko lmao…but a great movie.

  • August 6, 2013 at 3:31 pm

I was blown away when watching The Reef, great movie! Then I searched for Jaws and… yeah it’s the best ever, but definitely check The Reef, it’s basen on a true story so it’s very scary.

  • drev

    August 6, 2013 at 5:01 pm

I wonder where the original Jaws’ sequels will end up in the top worst.
And for the top 10, I guess it will be the 9 last of the top 40 worst…

  • August 6, 2013 at 9:23 pm

I love Jaws 2. Jaws: The Revenge has a pretty cool alternate version of the Jaws theme.

  • Sephit

    August 7, 2013 at 1:31 am

The Reef is a great Australian shark movie that rivals Jaws in suspense.

  • August 7, 2013 at 5:30 am

james really must not like his shark movies, but they arn’t really plot based and some can be silly so i can understand but personally i love the shark movie genre, its just a nice fun film to watch and ocationally laugh about =) sort of like a monster movie

    August 8, 2013 at 7:55 pm

‘Jaws’ was epic and has held its grown for the past 40 years! I thought ‘Deep Blue Sea’ was going to be good, but the ending was so ”Jaws” and the CGI was overused

Jaws isn’t a “shark movie”, it’s a movie. It shouldn’t even be on any shark movie list. It doesn’t deserve to be in a category filled with such crap. Jaws is like a really smart kid in a classroom full of special needs kids, it just doesn’t belong.

  • August 12, 2013 at 5:28 am

Jaws is one of the greatest films ever!!!

    August 18, 2013 at 10:24 am

The Reef and Open Water are two seriously scary and thrilling shark movies. You should look into them if you havent seen them already, james.

  • August 24, 2013 at 2:07 pm

Jaws is the best for sure but I thought the Reef was great, What a terrible situation to be put in. The reef should be on here, and the open waters.
