Mr. Tambourine Man (Shatner Spoof) by Mike (2000)

Mike Matei / February 13th, 2013

Back in college, I  (Mike Matei) took a class called Sound Design and Technology. The assignment was to learn how to do video effects on an analog editing system.

This was the first time I ever video edited anything in my life. Again, this video was edited ANALOG. Meaning, using VHS tapes. It was a nightmare. And yet, a unique editing experience I look back fondly upon.

Usually when I’ve shown this to people, they think I was only trying to match Shatners lips to the song. However, that was only a minor element on my mind while making this.

I was mostly trying to capture Shatner’s attitude and charisma, which in some lucky way, I feel like I did.

Keep in mind, this was made 4-5 years before Youtube existed.

I’d love to see you a sequel to this James! Combine all the commercials and movies he’s done! Have American Psycho 2, Priceline Commercials, and the Futurama episode as the stars with any other appearances you can fit in.

I thought that was a well-known fact :O It was released 1983, was directed by Richard Franklin and starring Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles, Robert Loggia and Meg Tilly.

      • February 13, 2013 at 3:32 pm

Oh i thought he meant the Cristian Bale version. Sorry.

      • February 13, 2013 at 7:33 pm

Yes, there was a sequel to American Psycho. It was direct-to-video, so Christian Bale wasn’t in it, but William Shatner had a role in it.

President Jenkins was not referring to Psycho 2 with Anthony Perkins.

    Nice.

  • February 13, 2013 at 1:38 pm

That was excellent. You know, I hope somebody invents immortality pretty soon, just so William Shatner can live forever. Long live the Shat!

Did you record the screen with the camera?

  • February 13, 2013 at 2:45 pm

I remember when Mike showed me this video in college. He had every Star Trek VHS tape of the original series. (Now they’re in my basement. He gave them away when he got the DVD’s.) The analog equipment was the same equipment I edited The Feeling of Terror on. Fun fact.

William Shatner was on drugs when he decided “why not give being a singer a chance. Delivering the verses like some kind of hipster performing in monologue. What was he thinkin… (still shaking head). Must admit his rendition of “Rocketman” is classic.
