The NEW Cinemassacre.com – 2013

Mike Matei / December 27th, 2012

As the new year approaches, we enter a new chapter and some of us make new year’s resolutions. Times change. We move forward. Just like Cinemassacre.com. We will be launching a new version of the website in time for the New Year’s celebration. (Close to midnight, Eastern time) The new site will keep the same simplicity, but it will load faster, the comment system will work better, it’ll be easier for me to re-feature old videos that you might have missed, and other improvements. Until then, let’s go back to the past and see how far Cinemassacre.com has evolved.

Version 1 (2000-2003)

In the beginning, it was extremely basic. I was on a dialup internet connection and YouTube didn’t exist yet. My movies were still being distributed on VHS tapes. There were no videos on the site. For now, all I had was a written filmography and a gallery of stills to represent my films to the outside world.

Version 2 (2003-2008)

Using new software, the layout got as complicated as I could have ever imagined. I began uploading my movies as quicktime files. Then Youtube happened. The online video age was born!

When the Angry Video Game Nerd took over, he got his own page!

This was the original page for AVGN episodes. Adding new videos was always a technical nightmare!

Version 3 (2008-2010)

As I became more active on the internet, making videos more often, it became very frustrating to keep updating the site. My knowledge (and patience) of web design was put to the ultimate test. I couldn’t take it any longer, so my new web designer Ryan, and Mike Matei, all got together and created the new Cinemassacre.com. Updating the site was now much easier, and there were countless other advancements, such as the ability to leave COMMENTS!

Version 4 (2010-2012)

Another improved version. This time, you could navigate around and find old videos more easily.

Version 5 (2013)

COMING SOON – Check in on New Year’s

Lots of people. There is a phobia Metathesiophobia- Fear of change, I think there is a mental condition or something too. But it looks great although I also didn’t think it needed a change.

I don’t like change unless it’s absolutely necessary. I’m glad the comment system is better, and how the videos play a little better, but I don’t care for the new layout. Aesthetics aside, it seems like it’s harder to navigate. It used to have all the categories on top, all the newest videos on the side, and the newest video on the front. Now it’s a little complicated. It’s not bad, I can get used to it, although I kind of hate the new logo.

I like it only i don’t think “Misc Videos” should be in the site section but somewhere in the original video section, but overall I love the new design its a nice change :)

  • December 31, 2012 at 12:33 am

    Nice change, congrats James!

    December 31, 2012 at 12:44 am

I like the new layout, and I love the new logo. It’s nice and clean and modern, and you’ve once again gone with a change that’s an improvement instead of a motherfucking pain in my dick. I have enough of those.

Well done, sir. Even the comment system seems improved, but it’s been quite some time since I commented on anything, so that may not be recent.

    • Strazdas

      January 20, 2013 at 10:51 am

I like the new login for the comments, maybe they wont tell me im flaged as a spambot for whatever reason anymore (i guess somone didnt like my comments?)
but the mainsite has gotten worse. the best one was two changes ago in my opinion. now i cant even find a nice list of “5 last items” and have to browse each category seperately. as a person who follows your site couple times a week i would very much have a list of latest things than having to browse each category.
i understand you want to advertise your movies uploaded long ago, but you could do that in last design too.
The new layout is cool, but the whole video section groups i dislike.
      Overall – ok update.
Overall compared to other website updates – FUCKING AWESOME.

Thank you! Over the past 5 years I’ve had a great time working with James and Cinemassacre. Mike and I have been working on this website for what seems like forever. I’m so glad that everyone will now have a chance to see and enjoy what we’ve been up to.

The new site is looking great! similar to the old one, but cleaner, simpler and more modern. I love the new version of the logo too. The listings and tweets on the footer are a great idea, a better way to keep up with the social networks. The menu was reorganized, sweet! it was much needed :D

    • December 31, 2012 at 3:36 am

I’m glad you like the menu reorganization. I’m especially happy with the new A-Z section for our movie reviews. Now you can see which movies we’ve reviewed, and which we haven’t gotten to yet. That’s a feature I’ve wanted for years. Hope you enjoy it.

well, you said the comments system would be better, and it definitely is! it’s much easier to register now, I’ve been wanting to for a while but I couldn’t because my email would work for some reason. but anyway, I the new comments system looks great, as does the rest of the site! looking forward to what else comes with this new look!

    • December 31, 2012 at 3:33 am

Yeah, people having been asking us to fix the register section for a long time. I’m glad it’s finally more user friendly.

    December 31, 2012 at 3:44 am

The new site looks good! As with any big site launch though, there are a few bugs leftover. Don’t take this as complaining please, but as feedback for site improvement:

    - After successfully registering or logging in, you are redirected back to /register/ or /login/
    - Password fields on the registration form is under “About you” category.
    - Most importantly, the main RSS feed is empty and labeled “Comments on: Main”. One would expect the main RSS feed to contain new blog posts and videos instead.
    - As I am typing in this message, the reply is expanding downwards, but the rest of the page is staying fixed, so it’s becoming a bit mixed-up.

Aside from these little issues, I really like the new site and the new logo. Good job!

  • December 31, 2012 at 6:05 am

I like how the comments are more organized, but I wish the background of the site was solid black instead of dark grey. I’ll get used to it though.

The new web design looks great!

I also got something I think you should check out. I was watching Alien vs Predator Requiem yesterday with a couple friends. When it got around 00:16:40 minutes into the movie, there’s a actor called Steven Pasquale that really reminds me of Mike. If you ever get time, you should check it out and see the similarity.

  • December 31, 2012 at 8:40 am

I was not expecting the new layout, so it came as somewhat of a surprise when I logged on.
It does look great so far, however. =D I hope you’ll all slip into a nice new year.

    December 31, 2012 at 9:58 am

The new version is amazing! I really dig the new logo, guys. Mike, Ryan, good job! I’ve got to get used to it at first though. I imagine others willl have to, as well. It’s just that I prefered the old way of using the sections. It was nice and clean when they were at the top, but this isn’t bad, guys, it’s great! LOL at the sarcastic comment by Thegreatface. I’m sure he means it though…I think.

However, there is something messed up with the comment system. It’s about the HTML message. It gets underneath the Prev and Next buttons and the page number buttons, as well as Post Comment as you write a longer message. They overlay it. I’m sure you’ll get that fixed fast though. I have a question though. Will we get any kind of notifications about replies to our messages? I hope so!

    Stay creative,
    Best,
    - Lukas (VFX Coordinator on the AVGN Movie)

  • December 31, 2012 at 10:28 am

I’m not sure if you guys are still working on it or not, but with Google Chrome v.23.0.1271.101
on a Macbook Pro, the search bar is right in the middle of the page in kind of an odd spot.

As a graphic/web designer I have to say the new design looks awesome, very fresh and the logo looks great!

    • breeman

      January 1, 2013 at 8:30 pm

I agree, as a web/graphic designer myself, the new layout looks great, but in chrome the search box is in an odd spot. Shouldn’t be a hard fix though, just some browser specific CSS fix.

  • niQboy

    December 31, 2012 at 12:11 pm

Eh, apart from the new logo, I don’t really see much improvement. The 2012-2012 version was way more pleasing aesthetically. Why is the entire background flat gray without any texture? It just looks monotone and uninspired.

    Just my two cents.

Great job on the site guys ! Also i really like the new Cinemassacre logo, its more professional and clean looking and really pops.
New comment system is greatly improved :)
If theres any negative things i can say, is the site feels too congested/compact. I feel theres a lot of empty space that could have gotten used. Also the ‘Latest Videos’ section i feel should also have thumbnails, but not a big deal. That being said, the site is easy to read and find things.

  • warwagon

    December 31, 2012 at 1:44 pm

The new site looks great, Love the new logo. Although I do have an issue with the white font you use for the headings. It’s sort of hard on the eyes and takes a second to focus on to read.

  • December 31, 2012 at 2:22 pm

Site looks awesome! I like the new logo.
Not sure if this is unique to Chrome, but the ad on the top of the page overlaps the drop-down menus under “Shows,” “Game,” etc, so it’s impossible to read or click those menu options.

    • December 31, 2012 at 5:33 pm

Yeah, I’m having the same problem in chrome. We’ll work on fixing that.

    • December 31, 2012 at 5:38 pm

Try AdBlock for Chrome, because i dont have a problem with any of my other PC’s with Chrome, and they all have Adblock

(NOTE, AdBLock does not endorse this)

This is crazy, I was considering trying to contact anyone in charge of Cinemassacre’s upkeep to suggest an update in design including the logo. Not that it was bad before, but even James knows you need to evolve with the times. Cinemassacre is becoming more and more professional and I’m ecstatic at 2013 version. You guys really did a great job!

awesome. purely awesome. I think it’s a cool idea since it shows the evolution of the website & the logo of Cinemassacre. all I can say is just dont over due it like some companies have done. I think it would be cool James if you made a logo that was entierly metal , a logo that would be dripping in blood (halloween special I guess since sometimes logo’s change slightly for short periods of time based on events) , or even a logo that looks retro. off topic a bit , do you have any plans to review the new Texas Chainsaw film as well as the other films of the franchise? as a horror fan like yourself , it is about damn time that a horror franchise releases a pure seqel instead of a remake or prequel. in today’s age , we dont see true sequels to older horror franchises too often. it would be rather cool to see what your opinions would be on this new film.

Video buffering speed has dropped like a stone for me on the new site. Had zero load issues on the old site, but this now takes a while to buffer enough to play then ends up having to rebuffer halfway through. Apart from that it looks good.

  • Dieter Adant

    January 1, 2013 at 9:02 am

    Hi,

I work in web development and i just want to give you some constructive criticism. When you design your site you can make use of color contrast, blank space and borders to separate the different sections. This makes it easy for the eyes to separate the content from the meta content and navigation sections. Currently your site uses only one color and no borders this makes it hard on the eyes for new visitors. Using borders or color contrast could improve your design.

I do like the technical improvements.

  • Blue Wizard

    January 1, 2013 at 9:26 am

Absolutely Loving the new design, James. Well done. Here’s to another year of prosperity. Cheers! ^_^

  • January 1, 2013 at 1:14 pm

The design feels fast, useful, and organized.

    I have two comments though.

    1) Why are there no borders around things that feel like they need them? I feel like many places feel like the same thing even though they are separate.

    2) Why do we need to refresh the page and write the comment on a customized box then re-refresh to re post as not a reply? That’s weird. Better off using the Facebook plugin.

I welcome the change and it is going great overall so far.

  • January 1, 2013 at 1:33 pm

I’m digging the new look for the site. The new logo is cool as well, though admittedly I do have a soft spot for the previous logo.

  • geitje

    January 1, 2013 at 1:58 pm

The comments about the odd-placed search bar aren’t having browser issues with Chrome or Firefox, they are having problems with adBlock :) If the developers care about adBlock users, they could give the banner a fixed width.

  • January 1, 2013 at 2:48 pm

The new site is amazing. It “flows” nicely, the logo looks great, less amateurish, and the “featured” videos is also a vast improvement to check out videos personally neglected.

  • Karoomay

    January 1, 2013 at 5:13 pm

I seem to be in the minority of one of the people who does not really like this new change. On the homepage, there’s too much empty space on the top and below feels very cluttered with all the video thumbnails and text. And shouldn’t the latest videos have thumbnails instead of random thumbs of older videos? The boring monotone background doesn’t help either. Also, the new logo is dull. It looks like an outdated 80s logo, the older one was more badass.

  • doemaaan

    January 1, 2013 at 5:14 pm

it does have a strange “neatness” about it. i still have to get used to it though.

  • January 1, 2013 at 6:22 pm

Haven’t tried the new site too much yet, but I’ve just got to say that the new logo is AWESOME. It’s somehow simpler and more detailed… like the font is a lot easier to read, but the chainsaw itself seems much more threatening. Give a “fuck yeah” to your designer for me (was it Mike?).

    January 3, 2013 at 4:17 am

The site is really unorganized and looks like a mess. Yes, it’s clean and slick, but I have NO idea were your new videos are. I dislike sites were you have tons of places were videos are. Just show the new videos and blogs on the website and put the other, older videos in categories. I just can’t stand sections like ‘popular’ and stuff.

    • January 3, 2013 at 5:30 am

There is a section on the front page that says “Latest Videos”. Just go there.

I do like the New cinemassacre but their only 3 problems visually it doesn’t look as good so perhaps 2 different shades of grey like the older website the search is in an weird spot and when it comes to finding specific nerd seasons it is difficult besides that good move!

  • warwagon

    January 3, 2013 at 1:46 pm

    Feedback on Cinemassacre 2013:

    1. The new logo is awesome.
    2. The main video on the site should have the title on the top. I was very confused when I first saw it. And even now it looks weird. It may be because it has an advertisement at the top now instead of the website menu.
    3. The latest videos section is tucked away as text. I guess I can find it, but I don’t know if it will entice me as much without screenshots.
    4. What is that strip of videos under the video. Again there is no title. I initially thought it was the latest videos, but seeing old videos on there made me think again. Just like the main video, it needs a title (at the top).
    5. There are many redundant sections: Blog, Latest on Youtube, Latest on Facebook. What’s the point of showing the Youtube and Facebook on the site. I assume fans of those services will keep to those sites and not come here to find out.
    6. In the Main menu, it would be nice if the drop down menus highlighted when the mouse hovered over them. Because there are two different styles of text on it sometimes, I’m not sure if it’s just descriptive or a link. Highlighting them as a selection would make it clear.
    7. Site as a menu item is a non-standard description. It also hides the store. It could be split up into at least 3 menus: MISC, STORE, SITE.

While, the overall site has been improved, the main presentation of the site is worse. It requires titles and a clear organizational structure just like the sections under the new film strip section. An update would be nice.

The only gripe I have is that it was alot better to have dates on the AVGN videos. Now I need to scroll down and guess when they came out. Dunno why it would matter, but it does to me.

    January 5, 2013 at 5:55 am

This is not bad, but this could be better.

The contract between the font color (white) and the black background is annoying, and the lack of blocks is not nice

That’s why I’m working on a Stylish style, that will make Cinemassacre.com look a little better

You can install it by going on this page : (you need Stylish installed)

  • January 5, 2013 at 1:54 pm

Search is in the worst place possible … it just looks bad imo (would be better in the top right somewhere around the youtube button). The main video on the front page should also probably stretch all the way across for sake of symmetry. Finally in the drop down menus items should highlight since it can be hard to tell what exactly you are hovering over sometimes.

On the other side, I love the new style!

Why would you do that to support people who use AdBlock? If you use AdBlock you’re basically saying that you don’t support the shows.

    The new layout is nifty.

Need more defined areas. All your tables are meshed together on a solid background which makes it seem really chaotic and unorganized — even though you have more tables then before.

Before this, we were able to view the AVGN vids in the order they were released. Is this no longer possible? It was much better to be able to watch the changes over the years instead of being stuck in alphabetical order. Someone please let me know if I’m missing something!

I have been visiting this website for what seems like forever now, and I really like the new layout. You have always managed to improve it and I am actually finding videos that I did not even know existed on here. Keep up the good work !

Unlike most Websites trying to go for a new look. You Pulled it off! It Looks Quite Swell!

Anybody know what happened to the YouTube channels? They say they’ve been deleted due to repeated or severe violations? Both JamesNintendoNerd and Cinemassacre…

I can’t get over how much easier everything is to read and find. Everything looks great too!

Honestly I have mixed reviews on this new site layout. The comment system is WAY better, but for overall navigation I thought the last version was much easier on the eyes, and easier to get the videos/content that you wanted to see. Sure it’s easier for you to show more clips on the home page, but other than that I think the layout needs some tweaking

I agree … i really like version 4 the best. The seems hard to read and it’s more cluttered.

I like it. Also I finally took the time to register.

While I like the design of the new frontpage, the AVGN video site is just horrible… ALL the videos as thumbnails slowly building up? WHAT WHERE THEY THINKING?

Looking for a specific video is just a chore and overall any kind of category to sort them would be an improvement… I don’t know why you abandoned the yearly overview/category-style, but I think it was a million times better before the update.

I guess it’s because of all the people who think their 3 inch thumbnail screen is an appropriate way to watch videos, but it just feels like a big FU to everyone who uses a PC…

An interesting look back, James. I think I have been to every version except number 1. And I have to say, the new site is GREAT! Things load better and are easier to find, and the comments are much improved! You can go to the pages of comments by hitting a button, and I haven’t gotten a comment blocked once! Thanks much!
