“Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie” – Trailer

“Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie” is a passion project by independent filmmakers James Rolfe and Kevin Finn, based on the popular web series. The film is being produced outside the studio system, entirely funded by fan donations. Principle photography took place in Spring of 2012, in the Los Angeles area, with Jason Brewer as the DP. Additional filming is taking place on the East Coast. Editing is in its early stages.

The film is inspired by the famous Atari video game burial of 1982. Atari produced a game based on the biggest blockbuster movie of that year, E.T., and rushed it to meet the deadline for the Christmas shopping season. It was a commercial failure and millions of unsold game cartridges were buried in a desert landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Coincidentally, it’s not too far from Roswell, the landing site of a different kind of E.T.

The Trailer features music by Bear McCreary (Battlestar Gallactica, The Walking Dead). The track is called “Maverick Regeneration” and can be downloaded as part of the Play for Japan album. All proceeds go to help earthquake victims in Japan.

The final slate says “Coming this lifetime” because we have no idea how long it will take to complete. Any attempt to guess will only prove ourselves wrong. Independent films take a long time to finish. This one is no exception. It’s eventually expected to be released on DVD and/or Blu-ray, and to be available around the world, after showing to some live audiences in theater venues. Digital downloads is also an option. The immediate goal is to finish the film first.

    I have been a fan of Cinemassacre and The Nerd for over five years. When the movie was announced I was happy for James; but I never got it…I didn’t see how the concept would lend itself to a full length movie…but now I get it. I sooo GET IT! After this trailer I don’t think i could be any more excited for any film. It looks positively amazing!

    After years of watching your films, watching this is what caused me to finally register on your site. You, Mr. James Rolfe, are THE MAN!!! I cannot wait for the film to come out, I doubt you’ll be showing at a theatre here in Kansas City, MO… but I could see myself driving out to the east coast to go to the first showing of this… My expectations were high and this trailer just blew my damn mind!!!     When I began watching James on Youtube, he had only 5 or 6 episodes up and I remember being so inspired by him. Even once he started to become extremely popular, I never expected to see a feature length film of this magnitude. Watching the trailer was of course hilarious but surreal at the same time. I’m so proud to say I have been here from the start and I have literally enjoyed every episode he has produced. I think this film will be the start of something even better for James and I am so excited to watch all the films he’ll be producing in the future. It’s been amazing to watch the series grow and watch you fulfill your dreams right here on the Internet. You have fans now that will support you in anything you do. We’re ready for this one James!

    Congrats on your first big movie James! Hope it does well and if it ends up in theaters and in one near me, I will definitely be going to see it.

    My 2 cents on the trailer though, the movie seemed less about the nerd himself and more about James (you) playing the nerd role, its as if the nerd is self aware that he is just a character and not a real person and that he has fans that want to see him. In a sense it seems more like a James as the nerd movie, rather than an AVGN movie. Not saying its necessarily a bad thing, but I was expecting just the nerd being angry and going on an adventure. In either case, I’m looking forward to seeing it and hope for the best, good luck James!

    Looking awesome! I felt a slight bit of nerve to begin with but settled very quickly and found it simply awesome! SO FUNNY! I love the puns and links back to the episodes and the Wilhelm scream!!!

    Keep it up, I can’t wait for the whole thing! I live in the UK and I hope it makes it to some cinema venues- if not them all ’cause it should be!!! Not that I can help much there, but it’s worth a try! :D

    At first I didn’t notice, but after being pushed in that spacecraft watch Cooper just fall off the mountain. That was fantastic!

    Great fucking trailer, James! Didn’t care for the puking part, but I loved the rest. Now hurry up and get going on the rest of the movie so we can see it in all its wondrous glory. The quality looked awesome and definitely deserves a spot at the Cannes Film Festival and many others. Would love to see it at the SXSW festival next year or 2014 too. : )

    If you are going to try and do a national tour, you should look into having the movie played at Baxter Avenue Theaters in Louisville KY. They play a lot of independent films there. I promise that my girlfriend, my friends and I will go and see the living fuck out of it.

    I don’t know about this.. Your videos sometimes make me glue my hand to my face as it is with your trying to be funny too hard.. I mean, I like your reviews, and even the weird profanity, but when you bring another person into it, it gets ruined.. I cant watch your bugs bunny reviews or your game glitches videos because it literally causes me physical and mental pain to see a grown man making that big of an ass out of himself.. and Motherfucker Mike is the most disgusting human being Ive ever seen, does he not feel embarrassed about how fucking gay he is?     I’ve watched this like 10 times. Seriously James, I’ve seen every single video from Monkey Cheez to Death Puppy to Deader the Better….and this is what it was all building up to. In a time where legendary B movies are non-existent you massacre cinema and make a film with love. I raise a Rolling Rock to your future as a legendary film maker.     THAT WAS AWESOME! I don’t have much to say as I am practically speechless… This is the most excited I’ve been about a movie since the first Transformers! Trailer looks great and it seems things are silly as ever. Just like good ole AVGN we are used to. :) I wonder if the cartridges were really buried in the desert?

    I’ve been a follower of all your work since the early beginnings, I registered my youtube channel 4 days before you registered yours. I had a dream with It but my lack of effort and conviction prevented me to achieve it.

    To see you achieving your ultimate goal makes me smile and feel really glad for you, even when I don’t know you. You have provided me with hundreds of hours of pure entertainment, laughs and tears (live like a windrammer as you fuck) and I’d like to thank you for that. I’ll be axiously waiting the release of the film. Sadly I don’t live in the US so I’ll have to wait until you make an international release.

    It’s really missing some things, namely Motherf**ker Mike and a certain theme song; just didn’t seem like an AVGN episode. A cameo by the Glitch Gremlin is in order also. It’s been leaked that Keith Apicary shows up at some point. What about The Awesome Video Games guys? Chet, Ace, and Dad should be playing on the background on TV or something. I really wish I could have auditioned for this; was just too busy at the time.

    James I saw the trailer to the AVGN Movie Posted on youtube this morning. And as much as I enjoy your work, sadly I must tell you this………………HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!! THIS MOVIE IS FUCKING AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously I was really blown away from what I saw. I’m sure like everyone else I tried to imagine what this film was going to be like. Even after watching some of the behind the scenes video you put up though out the summer, I honestly didn’t expect it to look so damn good. I don’t know why but to me it has a sort of Wayne’s World feel to it. But with explosions and stuff. LOL. And knowing that you still have some filming left to do back home and alot of editing as well, I know from what we all saw was just a little frosting on the cake. Great job James. I cannot wait to see it. I would love to try to see this on the big screen if it plays in Connecticut or somwhere at least close by. Thanks James and God Bless you and your friends and family.

    I know you already know, James, but don’t forget about your European fans. I will buy the Blu-ray and the digital release the moment it comes out.

    The trailer looks really good, specially the second part with all the action going on. I’ve read a lot of comments from people who are apparently disappointed with it, and I can see why, since they were hoping for a 2 hour review movie and/or didn’t know the AVGN movie was an actual movie.You made that clear the first day you talked about it, so I think the majority of us were exactly waiting for this.

    Anyway, I’m just glad that you’re fulfilling one of your dreams and that you’re sharing it with us. I really can’t wait to see this film and see how you’ve matured as a director (The Deader the Better is my favorite film so far).

    I hope you enjoyed making this movie as much as we’re looking forward to it.

    So, after watching this (It was awesome, btw) I decided to go watch a random AVGN episode that I hadn’t seen in a while.

    I randomly chose Texas Chainsaw Massacre and discovered that, man, I really HAVEN’T seen this in forever. It’s actually done in story/film style with a review in the middle. The best thing about it though is that it is probably the BEST film side story that I’ve seen him do (think Mr. Bucket)

    Holy–The production values on this are AMAZING. I always thought it was safe to assume this movie would have a professional look to it, given your past work and the fact that you actually know a thing or two about cinematography…but seeing it action is still a shock. It’s incredibly hard to tell that this was independently funded.

I’m not trying to sell your work short, but I was expecting this to have more of that “small time – lower budget” look of a b-movie (not that I don’t love those) but this really feels like a genuine commercial picture.     WOW!! Fucking amazing! No humor lost! Can’t wait to watch the film sober, then crunk as hell like four times in a row!!!! The preview gets better each damn time! I’m hopeful for a soundtrack with some 80′s style grooves, like powerglove, lazerhawk, or Dredd style Mega City One! Kavinsky is in the vein but expensive, and not as much humor. Soundtrack will be the most important deal for an 80s flick (and boxes + Corman!!), hoping it comes together because what I’ve seen ROCKS THE HOUSE!

    I don’t know how you plan on doing the theater release, but keep us updated! I’d love to see this on the big screen.

    I know Rifftrax does live streaming around the country for performances and the three I’ve seen have pretty much sold out at my local theater (and it’s not a small theater). Just something to keep in mind if you have trouble doing it the traditional way, whatever that is.

    Nice trailer…thought the music was too loud but overall pretty good…I agree with others…girl at the end covered in vomit was pretty hot…the girl…not the vomit. But honestly this film unfortunately does not interest me but I wish James the best of luck and I am sure I will watch it sometime.

    I laughed a lot. Full of movie cliches and irony, this trailer encompasses exactly what I wanted to see in the movie. However, the backdrop to the driving scene was super cheesy :) . The General is what I would expect from AVGN, and the forcing to play atari, makes this simply a super-long episode. The best part was how 80′s/90′s the trailer seemed (reminded me of the TMNT2 trailer) due to the style of editing. Nice.

    Amazing, I can tell this movie will be full of references and goofs inspired by other films. Can’t wait to see if I can catch them all! I’m really hoping for a behind-the-scenes type extra either free on this site or on the disc, I’m sure a lot of fans are curious what it’s been like for James to work on a project of this size. I know I am!

    It’s a bit conflicting really, I want to keep the nerd and I also want James to explore making feature-length movies like he’s been wanting to for a long time. The AVGN movie is a perfect transition flick towards the latter but in the end it will come down to James. Sometimes I worry he stretches himself a bit too far to please us fans and maybe it’s holding him back a bit with our constant and vocal desires for more nerd episodes. In reality though, I think a good majority of us are primarily fans of the person James, and whichever character he puts on for the day second.

    Anyway, can’t wait to see this movie! Would be fun to watch it on the big screen too, if no theater will show it here I guess I’ll have to dust off ye olde projector! Rock on James, and thank you for all the entertainment so far!

    me and my girlfriend are so pumped to see this. over the past year or so no and off Ive been going to bed with AVGN episodes. LIzzi and I would laugh and just love to watch your concoctions of cinema entertainment . but i plan on buying this day one. if i have to pay 30 dollars to get my hands on the dvd then so be it :)

    In the still image used for the trailer, it seemed like a Dr. Evil-like enemy would be the main boss, but after watching the trailer, that dude reminds me of Grathnox 4/Grathnox 4B from Power Punch II for the NES, since the lower part of their bodies consist of a tank, rather than legs.

    I hope that everything works out for you and all of the cast and crew, James, you have our support as always! Take your time to do it right and try not to stress yourself out, man!

    Great job James! The trailer looks great. I can really determine the efforts put into it, albeit a little disappointed Mike didn’t get a cameo. Anyhow, you guys have achieved so much, am really pleased with the entertainment and joy you’ve shared with us also. Keep doing what you do well regardless if you feel you’ve done enough AVGN episodes.

    This movie looks awesome! I actually had an idea once that involved the ET video game where a group of friends discover a hidden message from an old game cartridge by the ET game designer. He intentionally made the game bad to take some of the profits from early sales and run off with the money (a take on the Mel Brooks classic The Producers) and ended up burying it where the game cartridges are supposedly. So the friends go looking and discover the guy living in an underground cavern with his house made of old cartridges to games that were never actually made but made to look as though they were in production. ^_^

    Did you ever talk to big movie industries about releasing it in theatres world wide like Lion gate would be a good choice since they released independent films in the past that got in theatres. Great job James and hope to see it released next year.

I can tell that this movie is going to be really awesome and that all your fans will support you and actually pay to go see it even if its at a small theater nevertheless keep doing what your doing your doing great. I see your work as inspiration for as I am just starting out as film maker myself at a school called the art institute.
