May 10, 2013 at 3:32 pm
Start working at home with Google! It’s by-far the best job Ive had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this – 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringin home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, http://www.g00.me/Work
October 24, 2012 at 12:59 am
james, you made my day. i speak for all of us when i say THANK YOU!!!!
October 24, 2012 at 1:06 am
WOW! Was NOT expecting a brand new AVGN episode! James, thanks for keeping your fans in mind and showing some love
October 24, 2012 at 1:07 am
. Hey that’s me “Matt T” second row on the petition. Nice haha “we are not worthy we are not worthy”
October 24, 2012 at 1:15 am
Wow!!! Total curveball, didn’t expect a game review at all this month! This truly made my night. Now my girlfriend thinks I’M the nerd for freaking out over this video… ha!
October 24, 2012 at 1:18 am
I’m incredibly pleased with the Atomic F-Bomb. Also that The Nerd Gets an ATB in an 8-bit setting. A great way to do Ghosts n’ Goblins. NEXT, maybe do Penn and Teller”s Smoke and Mirrors? I’d shit out my ears if I could hear what The Nerd has to say about Desert Bus. That game is a hulking mountain of elephant shit with tapeworms having an orgy inside. While shitting.
October 24, 2012 at 1:18 am
NES FEVER!!! lol when i was little i used to get so into games that after hours of frustration (on this game among many others) my face would start physically burning to the touch, my mom would call it nintendo fever! thought i was alone in that, lol.
October 24, 2012 at 1:20 am
Yeaah! This awesome suprise that there’s a new episode out really made my day! Now we are free to begin for the wait of avgn movie trailer
October 24, 2012 at 1:29 am
Simply awesome, totally unexpected and greatly appreciated. I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to do an AVGN this month, especially with how busy you must be on your movie (which I will see and buy day ONE). The greatest work any artist can do is to show his fans that he cares. You sir have done that 10 fold. I wish you and your wife a great halloween.
October 24, 2012 at 1:35 am
There was info about your history with the game and the game itself that I already knew, and it kinda spoiled the episode for me, but I think you did a great job with everything else in terms of keeping with the theme of the episode and the upcoming holiday and reviewing a holloweenish looking game, and i’m assuming you used a pumpkin in the back that was carved by your wife, that was sweet of you to use in the episode.
October 24, 2012 at 1:39 am
I have been a fan since day one of AVGN
This was a lot of fun to watch
Thank you for doing these videos
Haunted halloween to you and Mrs Nerd
October 24, 2012 at 1:41 am
Of course there would be a halloween episode! Huzzah
October 24, 2012 at 1:41 am
here we go..
October 24, 2012 at 1:42 am
SWEET
Thanks for the AVGN episode James!
Happy Halloween to you too!
October 24, 2012 at 1:42 am
Great espisode!, its always great to have the nerd back
BTW, just a few facts:
The NES/FC version of ghost and goblins wasn`t developed by capcom, it was made by a third company called MICRONICS. They developed shitty ports at most (exed exes, 1941)
The famicom version of ghost and goblins doesnt have continues..well, at firtst, because you can use them with a cheat.
October 24, 2012 at 1:48 am
Wow… I through you would not have enough time to sleep throughout this October, and still I see this new AVGN video. It really get us an example for hardworking for toward the job we love.
James, you will be a greatness in this future.
October 24, 2012 at 1:55 am
Indeed, “You will be a greatness in this future”
Maybe the best thing I’ve heard since “Live like a windrammer as you fuck” ha!
October 24, 2012 at 1:58 am
Blizzard of Balls LMAO
October 24, 2012 at 2:03 am
That was awesome
October 24, 2012 at 2:11 am
I’m sure it took a while to get footage of beating it twice, to only see a really bad engrish end screen. Now i’m off to go try and deal with Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, on Genesis/Mega Drive…let the f-bombs begin! That and maybe more Yuengling…
October 24, 2012 at 2:47 am
I knew there’d be a new AVGN this month, I mean come on, it’s the month of Halloween!
October 24, 2012 at 2:50 am
Finally a game that i beat twice too. I took about a month and the curse factory was really working for me in that month.
Anyway this AVGN episode was gold i tell ya, if they take long but this is the quality i can wait all you want. Great work man!
October 24, 2012 at 2:55 am
My very first NES game (Christmas 1985). I learned frustration early…
October 24, 2012 at 2:56 am
wow i never expected a new episode!! thanks so much James!!
October 24, 2012 at 3:24 am
Nice to see a new AVGN episode, I wasn’t really expecting one with Monster Madness going on and all the work on the movie. Thanks James I think I speak for us all when I say we appreciate all the hard work you put in.
October 24, 2012 at 3:25 am
Yeah baby! Another great episode of AVGN! It’s been a long time coming but it’s worth every second!
October 24, 2012 at 3:41 am
Thanks for releasing it on my b-day, it was quite a gift!!! Awesome episode
That game is one hard son of a bitch!!!
October 24, 2012 at 3:46 am
Fricken awesome James, Awesome~
October 24, 2012 at 4:04 am
Wooooo! Great work James, I’m actually marathoning your videos while I study.
October 24, 2012 at 4:14 am
Wow I’m still amazed how can you pull off getting a new episode out in the middle of Monster Madness and the AVGN movie. Kudos to you man and a great episode btw.
October 24, 2012 at 4:17 am
Thanks for taking the time to make a new nerd James! I have to say, I think this ending beats the Ghostbusters ending by a little and I only say that because you have to play the damn game twice, and it’s hard enough the first time to be it’s own game. Cruel!!! Just remember James, Feel Strongth Welling! Meaning, you beat this game you stupid asshole so here’s to your fuckness!!
October 24, 2012 at 4:28 am
I love that you have time to do a nerd video, I understand you have much to do..
But somehow I thought you had lost some caracter here, I felt that you wasn’t that angry that you used to be. Espesially since this is a really hard game..
Maybe it’s because you have a lot to do.. But as uasuall, I’m such a big fan that I will watch all of your videos anyway!
Keep up the good work!=D
October 24, 2012 at 4:53 am
Got really excited when I saw the new video, curious as to why you didn’t wait until Halloween to post it though, or Halloween eve, nevertheless, I’m super happy we got a new AVGN video to watch.
Another thing, the first Evil Dead remake trailer comes out in a few hours and I’d love to hear your opinion on it, even if its like 5 minutes of your thoughts on it or however long you can make it, I don’t expect it to be a very long trailer, I think its just a teaser if I remember right. Anyways, keep up the great work James and can’t wait to see the movie.
October 24, 2012 at 4:54 am
Oh and btw, loved the end where you did the RPG style battle with the game, awesome stuff.
October 24, 2012 at 5:01 am
I love to have a new episode, and I’m grateful you took the time with Monster Madness going on and you getting ready for the movie… but I agree with k1kk1, the Nerd didn’t seem angry enough, especially for such a hard game, at least I was expecting a major freak out when he discovered he had to go through the game twice to beat it. Still, it’s nice to have a new episode, I needed my AVGN fix
thank you again!
October 24, 2012 at 5:35 am
Thanks for a great new video good sir! This was also one of my first two games on that fateful christmas so many years ago.
Love GnG. Happy to see it get some nerd love.
October 24, 2012 at 5:47 am
Holy shit this was the most satisfying AVGN for me yet. I lived through this nightmare twice. First on a Capcom collection and then on the nes which was even harder. Still love to play it though even it does ravage me with ball blizzards and diarrhea blasts. Keep up the great work. Can’t wait for the movie.
October 24, 2012 at 5:55 am
Ahaha one of your best episodes yet. Great job. This style of commentary is great. Thanks for this and monster madness.
October 24, 2012 at 5:58 am
am i the only one whe see’s the back rounds from other capcom game maga man 2′s wood man trees
the magic kingdem’s haunted mansion and others
October 24, 2012 at 6:50 am
I only ever played this in the arcade. Was always out of money before I beat the first level.
October 24, 2012 at 7:43 am
The Legend Of Zelda had two quests, so you can say that Ghosts N’ Goblins is like that!! I would like see nerd episodes about The Legend Of Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Donkey Kong!!
October 24, 2012 at 7:51 am
Another highly creative gem Mr.Rolfe. Great work. I also want to express my gratitude for the obvious dedication that you put into your work; and all that to make us, fans, happy. We appreciate it.
October 24, 2012 at 9:51 am
Hey James, that was a great episode! I’m a big fan of yours and your videos are quite popular in Brazil. Congratulatios for your work!
October 24, 2012 at 10:02 am
NES Fever. I have it.
October 24, 2012 at 10:30 am
man ive been waiting to see you do this game for the longest time and now it has been made….thank you man now i know i was not alone with the madness!!
October 24, 2012 at 10:44 am
It’s Jimmy !!!!! I bet Ghosts N Goblins had a lot of Resol-U-A-tion.
October 24, 2012 at 11:05 am

October 24, 2012 at 11:05 am
The Ghosts n Goblins theme in Megaman 7 is pretty awesome.
October 24, 2012 at 11:12 am
COOLEST THING I EVER SAD!!!!
October 24, 2012 at 11:17 am
Awesome.
October 24, 2012 at 11:37 am
Did not expect an AVGN vid this month, whatta great surprise !
Great vid as usual and awsome ending !
Also, loving Monster Madness as always
October 24, 2012 at 11:41 am
so happy to wake up and find a new AVGN made my day! also an excellent episode, one of my all time favorite endings on par with Frankenstein episode
October 24, 2012 at 11:46 am
Whoa! I can’t believe it! I just finished this game LEGIT on the Wii Virtual console. It’s considered one of the most difficult and challenging video games! I know I loved this game when it was rather new on the Commodore 64, the music was different but really-really good!
I become to hate this game while playing on the Wii but soon (after a year of trial and error) I become to like it
Frustrating as hell but satisfying if you can beat it.
October 24, 2012 at 11:51 am
I can’t BELIEVE you made the time for this with everything else going on PLUS Monster Madness and the movie trailer. Thank you SO much for doing this video. It was well worth the wait.
October 24, 2012 at 11:52 am
This ep of AVGN brought back memories of 2 games I played on
newgrounds. Megaman vs Metroid & Megaman vs Ghost & Goblins.
Thanks James & have Halloween everybody!!
October 24, 2012 at 12:00 pm
OMFG, I bet to this day Capcom still gets angry letters about this game. You sir are a scholar.
October 24, 2012 at 12:09 pm
LOLLLL! Registered just to say I’ve been watching for years! This episode is now in my Top 5!
RB From Canada.
October 24, 2012 at 12:14 pm
That was Awesome!! Thank you! Ever play Super Ghost N’ Goblins? That game is a lot of fun to play. Happy Halloween!
October 24, 2012 at 12:16 pm
Yet again well done.
October 24, 2012 at 12:49 pm
Can’t wait for the movie !
October 24, 2012 at 1:14 pm
I knew it man. I knew you would take GnG for a Halloween episode someday!!!
Now do a Monster Party for NES review next year and the prophecy will be fulfilled.
October 24, 2012 at 1:17 pm
No wonder it was such a long time from the last avgn to this, you had to have been spending every waking moment trying to beat this damn thing. twice.
October 24, 2012 at 1:18 pm
i played this game as a kid! only defeated the “unicorn” once, it was hard as hell man.
October 24, 2012 at 1:19 pm
Is there any way to download this in 720p or similar, like on Gametrailers? I’d be sad to not have them all in my cool ‘collection’
October 24, 2012 at 1:20 pm
I just got so excited I shit myself.
October 24, 2012 at 1:33 pm
That’s a pretty nice review, but I should add something.
This NES port wasn’t made by Capcom, nor was 1942′s port, it was developped by Micronics (who hid their names). And James might not be aware, but they also made Super Pitfall.
How do you recognize a Micronics game ? Press Start in game, the sound sample is normally the same being reused for every single of their games on the NES (similar to the Konami games).
The worst, godawful game from this company : Athena. It was made by SNK in the Arcade, but the NES port must– no, IS one of the hardest, most frustrating, and ruthless games in existence, in fact, that could make an excellent AVGN episode. One thing I like to mention : they show a Continue option on the title screen, but you can NEVER select it. Monster trolling considering it’s already huge pain in the arse to play.
October 24, 2012 at 1:38 pm
This is one of the best episodes of AVGN ever! I just beat Super Ghouls and Ghosts for the first time ever so maybe I’m a bit biased. Great job
October 24, 2012 at 1:39 pm
Another episode?!?!?!
… James, you sneaky bastard!!
October 24, 2012 at 2:03 pm
Even in your busiest month, you took the time to make another episode. That’s fucking awesome !
Also, that ening was original and funny. Keep up the creativity !
October 24, 2012 at 2:17 pm
My first game was one of the spinoffs, Gargoyles Quest on gameboy, which i got when i was 5. That one wasn’t anywhere near as hard as G&G but still hard enough to keep me from progressing past the second level, it also didn’t help that i didn’t speak any english back then. Somehow i didn’t care though, when you’re a kid that kind of hard challenge is somehow more appealing that it would be to me today.
October 24, 2012 at 2:29 pm
Yay! A new Nerd episode. I like how it was acknowledged as being a good but unfairly hard game, rather than just being slated as a piece of shit. Also loving the Monster Madness. Great work James, thanks for keeping your fans happy. Keep it up. Awesome Show, Great Job!
October 24, 2012 at 2:38 pm
One of the best!
Keep em’ coming!!!
October 24, 2012 at 2:39 pm
Where is the theme song?
October 24, 2012 at 3:36 pm
Fuckin great episode. its classic AVGN quality, good work man. Also, great monster madness this year, good job buddy.
October 24, 2012 at 3:40 pm
Awesome James! This is one of your best episodes ever, in my humble opinion. Your ability to point out and describe the goofy aspects of games is truly unmatched. I really appreciate that fact that you take the time necessary to keep the episodes at such a high quality even if it means there will be less of them. Thanks so much for this and Happy Halloween, my friend.
October 24, 2012 at 3:40 pm
it’s been long sense I laughed so much, awesome episode Nerd!
And totally recognize myself in this while playing Demon’s and Dark Souls
October 24, 2012 at 3:45 pm
It is true that if you beat level 6 without the shield you go back to level 5. Before I knew you had to take it I said screw those other weapons I’m using the knife and fell victim to it.
October 24, 2012 at 3:51 pm
October 24, 2012 at 4:08 pm
Ya gotta love those end screens… Written in perfect En-ger-ish.
October 24, 2012 at 4:15 pm
Makaimura (Japanese version of Ghosts N’ Goblins) is very difficult… In Makaimura no Continues! That’s a really hardcore!
October 24, 2012 at 4:15 pm
That was great! Thank you good sir! This made my day,…and I had a smile on my face the whole episode! Also, I think that was the best ending ever! Thanks again,…
-Duckerton the 3rd Esquire
October 24, 2012 at 4:22 pm
Whatever happened to shorter, more plain episodes?
Anyway, this was a great episode, and it’s always awesome to see Nerd content pop up. Loved the ending of that game, lol!
October 24, 2012 at 4:22 pm
Happy fuckin halloween nerd. Nice review
October 24, 2012 at 5:03 pm
Ahahah…this episode is epic! And what a finale! You are really great, James!
October 24, 2012 at 5:09 pm
I heard the axe is the best weapon.
October 24, 2012 at 5:09 pm
Thanks James this is great. If I were to review this it would be a one word review: “LOL!”
October 24, 2012 at 5:10 pm
The Halloween episodes are always great, and this is no exception! Love the final part! You need to use an elixir to recover your fuck points! xD
October 24, 2012 at 5:14 pm
Just realized that his has no attachment to screwattack?
Also I could never beat this game, but my grandmother did, she left her NES on for a week
October 24, 2012 at 5:16 pm
I have been waiting a long time to see James do this game. What an awesome surprise
October 24, 2012 at 5:24 pm
Good job it’s a hard game!
@alias1093
I’ve just beaten Makaimura for my Retro video game show check it out if you want. It’s soon to be released on my youtube channel:
Retro Game Throwdown
Thanks AVGN by the way for releasing your video just before I do ! haha
October 24, 2012 at 5:35 pm
14:00 Heart stopped.
14:38 Mind blowed up.
15:52 Reached max frustration. Time to explode!
This was a better spin off than in the Predator’s review (even if you already knew about beating the game twice).
Great job James!
October 24, 2012 at 5:38 pm
I have never seen anyone do that, this is one of the hardest games ever. Like you, I played it all the time growing up but I think I only ever made it to the second stage twice. I totally lived vicariously through you in this episode, that was awesome.
Also, very cool that you are able to find home movies of yourself playing NES as a kid. I wish I could find some like that.
October 24, 2012 at 5:50 pm
This was amazing. I remember playing this game when I was younger and never getting past the first level. School is rough right now, and having had this to look forward to after class was awesome! Great episode James and I loved the battle sequence at the end. Pure genius!
October 24, 2012 at 6:17 pm
Is the game really proud of that ending? Is the enthralling exotic mutilation of the English language, combined with the majestic, abysmal void that is the black screen, really so opulent and gratifying that it warrants having to beat the game TWICE to see it?
After subjecting yourself to that misery and torment twice, it both baffles and infuriates me that the game even suggests that you do it again.
Fuck this game.
October 24, 2012 at 6:24 pm
FINALLY ANOTHER AVGN, I WAS WAITING FOR MONTHS DUDE, THANKS GOD
October 24, 2012 at 6:31 pm
Great episode James. Ghosts N Goblins has always been one of those games that I liked playing but your totally right about it being hard as shit. I’ve only made it to the 3 level, where you get ass raped by those red demon fucking things. I’m going to try that trick with shooting them once then running away to make them disappear, maybe that way I’ll have a fighting chance at making it to level 4. Thanks for the new Nerd episode, it’s great to see you back in action doing what you do best. Keep up all the good work, I’m enjoying the 80′s monster madness this year, an I’m looking forward to the AVGN movie trailer coming up here in the next couple weeks.
Your Fan, Mike
October 24, 2012 at 6:34 pm
This is one of the classic episodes again! Great job, James!
October 24, 2012 at 6:43 pm
Does this mean the AVGN movie is FINISHED, and post-production has started!?!? I’d love to know.
October 24, 2012 at 6:46 pm
I hate to be a troll but i cant understand what you are saying. i know the voice is goblin like but i cant understand you. sorry can you post one with regular audio voice ?
October 24, 2012 at 6:55 pm
Epic and hilarious, as always.
October 24, 2012 at 7:01 pm
Btw, I forgot to mention how fucking awesome it was at the end. I <3 pokemon, second to kirby and COD. Maybe the NEXT review will be a Kirby game, if a bad kirby game exists somewhere. If not, the worst game I've ever played is a GameCube game called Wallace and Gromit in Project Zoo. I think it's the hardest, and most monotonous game ever made, and with the worst inspiration for the idea. Almost as bad as Jekyll and Hyde.
October 24, 2012 at 7:22 pm
Nothing more synonymous with Hell????? How about La-Mulana’s Hell Temple?????
October 24, 2012 at 7:28 pm
I liked the sequel (Ghouls’n Ghosts) much better, especially the arcade version.
Man I miss these videos. Angry Video Game Nerd makes my day. Thank you James!
October 24, 2012 at 7:30 pm
AVGN videos are the best. Thanks so much for all your hard work.
October 24, 2012 at 7:34 pm
Good to see the nerd
October 24, 2012 at 7:39 pm

October 24, 2012 at 8:17 pm
No ScrewAttack or GameTrailers logo in the beginning, plus the video is hosted directly on Cinemassacre. James are you no longer affiliated with them?
October 24, 2012 at 8:39 pm
Holy Crap james birthday is the same day as mine awesome c:
October 24, 2012 at 8:49 pm
I’ve had this game since I was a kid and was only ever able to get to the blue level with all the devils. I have seen the ending though, by using the stage select cheat :p
Super kudos for beating it…TWICE. Holy balls.
October 24, 2012 at 8:58 pm
Hey James,
I want to rephrase what others have said already
this is a classic/epic AVGN episode congradulations
I can watch this over and over again
I particularly got tickled by your description of games like ghosts n goblins
as “whiping us into shape and turning us into tigers!”
Id love to see the release of the movie, if you have one in Philly let me know so i can get bus ride down from canada to see it.
October 24, 2012 at 9:15 pm
James, you’re a brilliant composer. You know how to connect with people. This was a great video, reminds me of the ones you put out a few years ago. My opinion as a faceless fan likely hold no serious value, but I must tell you this one at the end made me laugh like I did around 08. Keep up the good work, but dont over complicate things. You became an icon out of hard work and love of a good laugh and cherished memories. Hold onto that buddy, dont overshoot what you have already gained love and recognition for. Keep it simple and reap the benefits.
October 24, 2012 at 9:18 pm
K.i.S.S.
October 24, 2012 at 9:26 pm
One last thought, do FF3. I KNOW YOU PLAYED IT! DOOO it. faceless fan out!
October 24, 2012 at 9:40 pm
A-FUCKING-MAZING episode. I loved the final turn based RPG battle at the end. It’s good to have another AVGN episode after so long.
October 24, 2012 at 10:20 pm
I LOVED THIS EPISODE
October 24, 2012 at 10:27 pm
doing a video because the fans requested it, regardless of the absolute shittiness of the game?
you, sir, are the man.
October 24, 2012 at 11:44 pm
cool new video james
October 25, 2012 at 12:02 am

October 25, 2012 at 12:06 am
I check this page every couple days and most of the time there is not much new stuff since you’re so busy. You fuckin’ rock, keep up the good work and thanks for another AVGN episode!
October 25, 2012 at 12:59 am
amazing. you know what we want
