yeah theres going be a ghostbusters 3 its happying
Yay!,I wanted James to review The Stuff. There is something about Larry Cohen movies from that period that I love. Please do also Island of the Alive or Return to Salem’s Lot. Funny that James didn’t mentioned the kid’s weird-looking eyes or the fact that Michael Moriarty’s character is named Mo’.
BTW,is that kid playing Zaxxon on an Atari 5200? Because it looks somewhat different from the versions I had on C-64 and TRS-80.
Yup; saw this one too as a kid.
In Argentina (and probably on the whole latin-american, spanish-speaking countries) this film was called “The Voracious Stain”… why did they have to change every single movie title, I wonder.
If that is indeed true then it isn’t ghostbusters 3… no bill murray = no ghostbusters.
I find it highly unlikely though. Bill has been the guy pushing to make a sequel while some of the others (Ramis) have been reluctant. It wouldn’t make any sense for him not to participate.
Holy shit, I remember renting this when I was in grade school. I don’t remember ever seeing it on cable though, I’ve been meaning to get a copy of The Stuff on DVD, one of my favorite cheesy, B movie horror classics.
The Stuff is on Netflix, and I watched it a few months ago. There’s a dessert my mom invented but never named so I always called it the Stuff. I should show here this movie.
I emailed James about this movie during last year’s Monster Madness, wondering if he’d ever seen it. Now I am thrilled that he finally gave it its due!
I’ll be honest: This film is the only one from my youth that really affected me. I couldn’t stop thinking about the Chocolate Chip Charlie scene for weeks afterward, and how much it disturbed me. To this day, I’m not sure I could sit through the whole scene, even knowing how fake it is.
Classic Classic Classic flim! The shlock factor only adds to the appeal of this very odd, and surprisingly well cast movie. This was also a huge improvement over the It’s Alive thing that Cohen was doing prior. I haven’t seen Q, but i wasn’t much of a fan of ‘killer babies’. This was much more entertaining. I’m glad you pointed out ‘this has the 80s written all over it. I noticed they had a Motley Cure poster in the bathroom also. They didn’t seem like the Crue fan type of family
Boy, sure are alot of crazy rumours flying around about GHOSTBUSTERS 3. I swear I have been hearing about this movie since the early 90′s… Face it, people, it will never happen. The situation is too volatile without Bill Murray.
Anywho, i’d never heard of this movie. Of everything you’ve done so far, this is the first one that really made me say “i have to check this out”. Nice job!
Wow, never heard of this one before but I’m in! Nice review mang, as always.m Monster Madness makes October even more enjoyable as I never thought possible, peace.
Awww you show a clip of dan aykroyd but dont mention that garrett morris he was the black guy who dies in the review. hes one of my favorite actors in the 70′s SNL next to john belushi and dan aykroyd.
the stuff huh? hmmm. the plot is very familiar to a futurama episode wihen fry , leela , and bender were selling popplers as a new wave of fried food only top discover that they were the offspring of a nursery planet from the planet omicron persei 8. it also reminds me of the slurm episode. it’s kind of funny that before watching this episode and before I found out about this junk food horror film , I was drinking hershey’s cookies ‘n’ cream milk shake. god this film not only rteminds me a lot of the old days of mcdonald’s , but I bet this film will make anyone hungry. probably the worst place to get any kind of fast food job would be foodcourtia from invader zim. awesome job as always james. I look forward in seeing more mmmmmmmonster madness!!!
“what you want is what you get an mcdonald’s today”
1:34, holy shit, is that Abe Vigoda? As in total baws from The Godfather Abe Vigoda? You know what that means, right? The Stuff has to be AT LEAST as good as The Godfather.
What I loved so much about this movie was the Paul Verhoven-esque cheesy marketing as a mind control/propaganda technique that is used throughout the film. So awesome.
Am I the only one who hopes they DON’T make a Ghostbusters 3? I love Ghostbusters, but if they were going to make a third one they should’ve done it 20 years ago when they were still relatively young. Besides, doing Ghostbusters without Bill Murray would be like a Nightmare on Elm Street without Robert England (yeah, they did it and it sucked!).
Michael Bay should direct the Ghostbusters remake. He can give the franchise a much needed dose of dumb college humor like, fart jokes, gay jokes and the like.
Egon’s gender will be changed to female and he(she) will walk around the whole movie in her underwear (with several extreme-butt-closeups). Then the military will get involved so we can tons of pointless shots of armoured vehicles driving and Military Helicopters taking off.
Louis Tully will be the main protagonist (played by Shia The Beef), a nerdy college student who has a crush on Egon. Oh yeah, the Ghostbusters will be from an alien race…
Ok, I’ll shut up now. In case you can’t tell that was sarcasm.
That movie looks funny. The Stuff looks the jar of marshmallow whip/cream/sauce whatever that you can buy. I don’t know wtf Fluffernutter is though.
It’s pretty ridiculous that The Stuff is just something that was found in a quarry. I agree that it reminds one a bit of the Slurm and Poppler episodes of Futurama, heh.
In spanish, this movie was translated as “La Cosa”. The funny thing is that the movie The Thing was also translated as “La Cosa”, so there I was, one Sunday afternoon, waiting to watch The Thing, and instead I got this.
Even more funny is that I end up liking it hahaha For me is an 80s classic. I love The Stuff!
Men the guy playing Zaxxon on colecovision one of my favorite game on the coleco! For the movie there was not enough materials in the movie to do a longer review! I didn’t like or dislike the movie it was just Ok for me. Some special effects was good for the time but to me it’s not a great horror movie !
I always remembered seeing this movie sitting on the shelves at my local video store in the 80s as a kid and was curious what it was. I found out last year finally and wished that I hadn’t! Horrible movie!
The part when the guy got killed in the radio station reminds me of Amnesia: The Dark Descent grunts and brutes, with his elongated mouth (which many gmod filmmakers would refer to as a “vagiface”)
They should make an Amnesia movie. I’d love to see it, but where I live, I’d have to wait a long time to get it…
Do you wanna know something funny?, in spanish the movies “the thing” and “IT” were translated both as “La Cosa”. This movie also can be literally translated as “La Cosa”. Well It was translated as The evil substance actually.
I actually remember just this year Wendy’s tried to bring back the “Where’s the Beef” campaign, this time in line for their “100% beef” burgers, by having some guy finding the shirt at a thrift store and walking down the street with it with people recalling the catch phrase.
Thankfully, it didn’t catch on like the original, which I still don’t get either.
No offense, but who the fuck are you to make such harsh comments? If you didn’t like the review, well too bad, but that’s your opinion. I’m wiling to bet most viewers, myself included, enjoyed it. If James wants to show clips of other films, or of his pet cat running around, that’s his choice. But to suggest this is “half assed”, when he bothered to give us Monster Madness AT ALL, considering how crazy-busy he is (you know, finishing up the MOVIE, making a new AVGN episode, and everything else). I’d say he’s done a damn good job.
Plus, if you’re gonna criticize something, it helps to:
A) Be positive.
and B) Not come off like a complete asshole about things.
I can only assume your comment about Ghostbusters III was meant to be ironic since now that it’s been absolutely confirmed Bill Murray will not be taking part in the film, this was the major hold up the last couple years for those of you who didn’t know, it’s actually moving towards production again.

October 13, 2012 at 1:36 am
“I threw up in your car”

“Sorry! I had to eat shaving cream!”

October 13, 2012 at 2:04 am
Ghostbusters 3 is already filming (might even be done) but Bill Murray isn’t in it. I heard a rumor that Seth Rogen is.

Great review as always. And the bit with the Rubik’s cube at the end? Great! That’s the kind of simple, yet imaginative title sequence I like to see.
October 13, 2012 at 6:47 am
It’s totally great that the lack of job-killing regulations brought the Stuff to the supermarket.
October 13, 2012 at 8:31 am

also, the kid is totally playing Zaxxon a Colecovision. Just look at that AC adapter!

There seems to be a lot of misinformation about Ghostbusters 3 in the comments here.
Here’s a summary:

What a stupid premise!
October 13, 2012 at 11:45 am
This reminds me of The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie where Ivan Ooze gives everyone that weird pink stuff and controls their mind.

I saw this movie not long ago. It makes me feel sick. Maybe because the stuff looks a lot like icelandic Skyr. I love that stuff!
This movie has a really sick and twisted ending. A really warped sense of justice served, literally.
