My brother and I played the hell out of this game. It was probably our favorite multiplayer game because really, we were both gaming assholes. hehe Whatever we could do to screw the other out of victory, we would do it. I’m glad I still have the game because now I definitely need to fire it up. Now I’ll be playing against my niece instead of my brother, though. She loves my SNES, but maybe she won’t be as eager to play it after I introduce her to the competitive side of gaming. :P

I absolutely love these clips. Nostalgic feelings to say the least.

SNES version definitely the best. The one where items don’t do everything.

Lol, I love when he looks down and pretty much says with his face ‘If I let her win at Mario Kart then I might’ve gotten some, but I can’t say that because Mrs. Nerd might watch this’. Pure hilarious, and even though I played mostly the 64 version the premise is the same- be an asshole.

And why is the image for this video such a weird frame? It looks like he’s trying to look at his teeth in the mirror while flipping us off.

Okay. Um. Not to be mean or anything, but in the last couple of things you’ve been doing, James, I get the impression that you’re either trying to be, or just plain being, way too much of a “casual jock” kind of gamer, who barely understands what they are about.

Maybe it’s because I have such a special bond to Super Mario Kart, but you really seemed to barely know anything about it. I don’t know. I like all your stuff, usually, but lately… I hope this is just in my head.

Finally, who actually plays competitively in those games? Seriously. You’d end up physically beating each other up and hating each other if you did that… we always ran it cooperatively and tried to beat the satanic computer players… it was more than challenging enough.

I tried to netplay this fucker recently so I could play with an internet bro of mine.

Since it had been 15 years since we last played it we just did a split screen regular mushroom cup together, but when we got to the haunted house we realized we sucked so bad we sort of hopped towards each other and committed joint suicide by hopping over the edge of the track.

You took a girl to prom and then played super mario kart on SNES? You really are the AVGN.

I’m the same age as James, but I never played a Mario Kart game until Double Dash. I was a victim of the Sega ad campaigns and decided they were dippy and that was that.

Recently, I tried to go back and play the old games but they don’t compare at all to Mario Kart 7.

  • October 6, 2012 at 6:03 pm

James is just cranking shit out like it’s nothing. Dude is a workaholic.

Great video, James. I remember visiting my Uncle’s house a long time ago, and their kids that had grown up left their SNES there. So, I got to play awesome games Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, and Mario Kart.

I loved Mario Kart. I remember the Koopa was the best character to use. Also, the haunted house was my favorite level. I wish you would have shown that one more.

Great Mario Kart memories for me too :) I loved how James described it as an asshole game. lol. Couldn’t have described it any better! :)

OMG! Why were you struggling to remember Rainbow road? Or do you think your prom date is watching, so you’re just trying to play it cool?

I have four siblings! We *always* played competitively. Any game that had the opportunity for it was exploited. And we cheated like hell in Super Mario Kart. It got easier with the N64 with four players, but the Super Nintendo was the first one where we were all old enough to play it at the same time. I love that you choose to share your video game memories with us James! It is most definitely an asshole game!

Love those “memories” clips . . . I think the Contra one was my favorite, so far, maybe because my beating it with no deaths and no cheat code was a very recent happening, early Saturday morning before I had to go to my chump job.

Unrelated: You know what would be awesome? If you and Mike reviewed a few new retro-style Indie games, like Cave Story, La-Mulana, or something. It would be great to get your opinions on stuff like that.

My brother and I would play competively on 50cc and 100cc cups only. We cooperated on 150cc. The computer players were so easy to sabotage, just put banana peels or shells before key spots on almost any map and it would totally screw them over.

But I think the N64 version is my favorite, simply because 4 player split screen.

I have to agree, it’s hard to believe a Mario Kart fan would struggle remembering “RAINBOW ROAD”. That’s a legendary name in Gaming Lore!

My best friend in grade school and i used to play the heck out of Mario Kart on the SNES. I never really played the N64 or Gamecube versions of the game, but have owned every incarnation on the portable systems, and the Wii entry.

Still the SNES version is, to me, the best one. I miss my buddy.

One of the best racing games ever, ever!

  • October 7, 2012 at 8:03 pm

To all the dipshits slamming james because he couldn’t remember “rainbow road” he was making a fucking joke. Clearly you didn’t get it. Go listen to some Dio and then come back. I’ll admit it wasn’t a very funny or good joke, but at least I got it. Do you honestly think that James wouldn’t have remembered rainbow road?

I really cringed when I heard you beat the everliving shit out of your prom date at mario kart. Really really bad form old chap.

I never played this until the Wii version. I love that one anyhow.

  • October 8, 2012 at 1:10 pm

I grew up playing the N64 version. The first time I tried it on the SNES, I was blown away by how much harder it was.

One of my favorite franchises of all time : Mario Kart is very fun and addictive.. You will never get tired of playing with your friends… besides the other realistic games… i mean I love Forza 4 , but ithat’s a personal racer, not the one with fun and tons of joy that is Mario Kart series :)

  • October 9, 2012 at 3:49 pm

James, I have been watching your AVGN stuff for a few years now, I have seen every episode. I know you are doing your movie thing, and going to conventions and I know how much effort it takes to make an AVGN episode, but you are going to lose you audience if you keep making these memories crap episodes and not new AVGN episodes. I watch your videos for your opinions and hilarious commentary, not for your own personal nostalgia, I watch them for my own nostalgia because yoru eveiws bring me back to my own memories. I am really close to not even coming to your site anymore if I don’t get some new episodes.

ah man this game was so much fun. it still is. I also still prefer this game over the over sequels due to it’s fun factor and my own nostalgic impression. I would love to see James do a nerd memories of Star Fox next. speaking of Star Fox , does anyone remember the old Corn Pop’s promotion of the Arwing Watch? at the time , if you sent in a number of points that you had to cut out , you got a plastic watch with a small Star Fox game on top. sort of similar to those old tiger electronic toys that came out at the time that had stop watch type graphics to it. I remember owning a couple , and I remember wanting that damn Talkboy as well. fun memories the 90′s were. I wish those days could return and become a lifestyle rather than a distant memory. we all talk about the good old days , so why not bring it back? think about that folks.

i’ve played all versions of mario card, starting with this one. is a great game, but i’d say i put more hours into mario kart 64, it had 4 players and it was an asshole fest, that one is still my favorite just because it was 4 players.

    • Truejrc365

I still enjoy the first Mario cart. Even though they release it on every system, the franchise still rocks after all these years.

  • thatrandomperson

    June 11, 2013 at 12:22 am

Man. The only Mario based games besides an actual game would be Double Dash and Mario Baseball both on GameCube. I liked them but the one James showed looked real good for its time. Even though I never played much of it I did play Mario 3. That was real fun.
