5. Chrono Trigger
6. Donkey Kong Country
7. Super Mario World
8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time
9. F-Zero
10. Star Fox
Honorable Mention: Mario Paint
(In some ways, it would make the #1 spot, because it gave me a creative outlet as a kid, but it’s not really a game.)

August 18, 2012 at 10:01 am
Agreed
August 18, 2012 at 10:03 am
Another very nice Top 10, James. : )
August 18, 2012 at 10:04 am

August 18, 2012 at 10:33 am
As a matter of fact…I think Illusion Of Time is a very underrated game. It’s a game that definetly hits top 5 for me…but everyone has his or her own favourits of course…
yeah Mario Kart is also in my top 10! It was one of the first family sports games I accually liked!
August 18, 2012 at 10:33 am
i have a Q about the cheetah men game. if they dont reach there goal do i get screwed out of that bad a$$ limited edition 60 dollar cart?
August 18, 2012 at 10:35 am

August 18, 2012 at 10:56 am
Grew up in the ’90s playing the Super Nintendo. It was a big part of my childhood, and one of the best consoles made. Remember getting up very early just so that I could play Super Mario World before heading off to school.
August 18, 2012 at 11:06 am
It’s a great list, but it got me wondering. I wonder if James has ever played Earthbound. Knowing the types of games that he likes, it would be hard to imagine him not loving EB. It’s all about charm and playing on your memories of being a child. Yet I don’t think I’ve ever seen him mention the game.
My SNES list: 1. Chrono Trigger, 2. Super Metroid, 3. Earthbound, 4. Zelda: LTTP, 5. Donkey Kong Country 2, 6. Super Mario Kart, 7. Final Fantasy 2, 8. Secret of Mana, 9. Mega Man X, 10. Castlevania 4
August 18, 2012 at 11:16 am
1. Super Mario World
2. Donkey Kong Country 2
3. Turtles IV
4. Street Fighter 2 Turbo
5. Final Fantasy 3(6)
6. Mortal Kombat 2
7. Super Mario RPG
8. Ken Griffey Jr. Present Major League Baseball
9. Alladin
10. Pilotwings
August 18, 2012 at 11:44 am
Again, in no particular order:
1. Zelda: A Link to the Past
2. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
3. Super Mario RPG
4. Super Mario Kart
5. Chrono Trigger
6. SimCity
7. Super Mario World
8. NHL ’94
9. Pilotwings
10. DKC Series
August 18, 2012 at 11:44 am
No Street Fighter, no Final Fight, no Mega Man, no Mortal Kombat, no Earthbound, no Mario Kart? Wow, I’m quite surprised
August 18, 2012 at 12:02 pm
that is a nice list james i agree with it completely
August 18, 2012 at 12:04 pm
Great list, i don’t have anything to say, because i had Genesis, not SNES, but I really glad that you didn’t miss FF 3 (or 6, or whatever) and Chrono Trigger, i played them by the DARK FORCES of emulation and they’re awesome.
August 18, 2012 at 12:30 pm
All awesome games. I am quite surprised however nobody has Secret of Mana in their top ten lists. Then again we could all probably make a top 50 list easily for snes.
August 18, 2012 at 12:33 pm
the fact that Chrono Trigger is in this list makes me very, very happy.
August 18, 2012 at 1:07 pm
CHRONO TRIGGER IS THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME!
uhh… yeah big fan blah blah mario kart blah blah. insert random compliment
August 18, 2012 at 1:23 pm
Remember the Chrono Trigger VS..FINAL FANTASY III??
That was a great debate back in the day.
That would make a cool video!
August 18, 2012 at 1:41 pm
Now this is the console I grew up on (this and Game Boy). I only really played games I owned, though, and I never owned a crazy amount of games.
1) Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
2) Donkey Kong Country 2
3) Super Mario Kart
4) Super Mario World
5) Final Fantasy II
6) Super Mario All-Stars
7) Donkey Kong Country
8) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
9) Donkey Kong Country 3
10) Monopoly
11) Kirby’s Avalanche
August 18, 2012 at 2:17 pm
I signed up to say how sad I am with the lack of love for Secret of Mana, one of the greatest games ever made on any platform. I’d also argue that Donkey Kong Country 3 is better than the original, it was so damn satisfying to play, on par with Super Mario World.
August 18, 2012 at 2:23 pm
This is a near perfect list, except I would have to include both Secret of Mana and Earthbound (two of my personal favorites ever).
August 18, 2012 at 3:06 pm
1. Link to the Past
2. Super Metroid
3. Super Mario World
4. Donkey Kong Country
5. Star Fox
6. Super Punch Out
7. Yoshi’s Island
8. F-Zero
9. Final Fantasy 4 (2 US)
10. Final Fantasy 6 (3 US)
August 18, 2012 at 3:58 pm
My list is very similar to James (in no particular order), except I’d bump off Mario World and TMNT in favor of FF 2 (4), and Secret of Mana. Mario World would be in my top 20, but I just didn’t go nuts over it like everyone else did.
August 18, 2012 at 4:23 pm
The Star Wars Trilogy on SNES was bad ass as you pointed out in one of your AVGN videos a while back.
August 18, 2012 at 4:53 pm
I didn’t play that many SNES games as a kid but my top 5 would have to be
1. Donkey Kong Country 2
2. Super Mario RPG
3. Return of the Jedi
4. Mario All Stars with Super Mario World(yeah I know that’s kinda cheating)
5. A Link to the Past (it’s this low because I was stupid as a kid and never got up to the Dark World, I’m not joking I got stuck on Death Mountain)
Now that I think about it I think I only played about 15 SNES games as a kid.
August 18, 2012 at 4:57 pm
1- Donkey Kong Country 2
2- The legend of Zelda: Link to the past
3-SUper Castlevania 4
4- Super Mario World
5- Actraiser
6- SIm CIty
7- Secret Of Mana
8- TMNT :Turtels in time
9- Super Mario RPG
10- Super Mario Kart ( Tied with F-zero)
Note: SOme games did not make my top 10, as i did not have them as a kid. This is a list of what were my favorites, that i had as a kid.
These games include:
FF3 (6)
Chrono Trigger
Seiken Denetsu 3 ( secret of mana 2, only in Japan)
Super Metroid ( shame i never had this as a kid)
Also games that i loved, but didnt make my top ten:
Super star wars (trilogy)
Super Adventure Island
Mario Paint.
Star Fox
August 18, 2012 at 5:23 pm
1 Castlevania 4
2 TMNT: turtles in time
3 Super mario rpg
4 Zelda link to the past
5 Donkey kong country 2
5 Super mario all-stars
6 Super mario world
7 Mortal kombat 2
8 Donkey kong country
9 Return of the jedi
10 yoshi island
August 18, 2012 at 6:03 pm
No Earthbound? :c
August 18, 2012 at 6:34 pm
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Donkey Kong Country
3. FF3
4. International Super Star Soccer Deluxe (c’mon people!)
5. Mario kart
6. Top gear 2 (or 3000 maybe)
7. Ultimate MK 3
8. NBA JAM Tournament edition
9. Sunset riders
10. Super Soccer (it was great for it’s time, but then came ISSS deluxe which was so much better).
i see my list is notoriously different than everyone else’s, i feel proud \o/
Many multiplayer games too
August 18, 2012 at 6:38 pm
I’ve played the SNES a long time ago and I can recall four games that I played a lot: Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Street Fighter II Turbo Hyper Edition and The Great Circus Mystery staring Mickey and Minnie, which was actually better than it sounds.
August 18, 2012 at 6:40 pm
Ten SNES games I enjoyed in no particular order:
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III
Secret of Mana
Super Castlevania IV
Breath of Fire II
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Chrono Trigger
Street Fighter II
Lufia and the fortress of Doom
Suffice to say, my love affair of RPGs started with the SNES.
August 18, 2012 at 7:55 pm
This is a hard list for me, I loved super nintendo, I am slowly rebuilding my library on Wii Virtual Console out of what’s available… I wish I still had my SNES.
1 Secret of Mana
2 Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
3 Final Fantasy III
4 Super Mario Kart. I used to play it my dad a lot lol, so many memories
5 Super Metroid
6 Chrono Trigger Discovered late sadly, missed out on it when it was new.
7 Super Mario World
8 Illusion of Gaia
9 Yoshi’s Island
10 Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars
Putting them in order is hard let alone choosing only 10. Putting secret of mana for me at the top is kind of wierd I guess it was not as flawless in design as chrono trigger or link to the past, but it’s charm left an impression that influenced me my whole life as an artist.
August 18, 2012 at 8:19 pm
Good list but I would change a few of them. Its hard to get only 10 since snes had so many top games. I do agree with your top 6.
1. Zelda: A Link to the Past
2. Super Metroid
3. Super Castlevania 4
4. Final Fantasy 3
5. Chrono Trigger
6. Donkey Kong Country/2/3
7. Super Mario World / all mario games – all stars
8. ogre battle – changed
9. mega man x – changed
10. Star Fox
August 18, 2012 at 8:22 pm
Any top 10 without final fantasy 3, super metroid, or chrono trigger in it is basically just invalid and wrong. These are easily some of the best games ever made even to this day. I think super ghouls and ghosts is also a top game and there are lots of others I always liked lost vikings it had great music and humor.
August 18, 2012 at 8:31 pm
Awesome list, although my list would contain a lot more RPGs. Lufia 2 and Final Fantasy 4 at least, and also Seiken densetsu 3 (secret of mana 2, only fan translation available I think..?). Star Fox would be nowhere, and Mega Man X (all of them) would make an appearance.
Still, good choices by James. Link to the Past a very predictable number 1, but well deserved. I could’ve guessed most of the games on this list just by having watched all your videos, and that’s just good.
August 18, 2012 at 8:55 pm
My list:
All the RPGs
I never understood the love for DKC.
August 18, 2012 at 9:01 pm
As a youngin’, I’ve never played a single SNES game in my life, so I can’t make a list
But I personally would love to hear your thoughts on FF3 (FF6) since it’s a common fan favorite among the hard core FF fans, and the protagonist and antagonist are fairly interesting characters (There are games with a good main character (ex. Yuri from Tales of Vesperia, and there are games with a good villain (ex. Bioshock), but there’s rarely a game that has both a good main character AND a good villain. FF3 appears to meet those expectations in the fans’ eyes).
Do you think maybe you could make a video where you go into detail on why you like certain games on your list? (Like, maybe the ones that aren’t that predictable, or are interesting choices like FF3 or Chrono Trigger)
August 18, 2012 at 9:28 pm
James, if you haven’t played Seiken Densetsu 3 yet you reallyyyy should. It is my favorite snes game and definitely one of my top 5 games of all time.
Your list does look similar to mine. Good taste in gaming! One Question though… what would the Angry Video Game Nerds top 10 be?
August 18, 2012 at 10:21 pm
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Super Metroid are not only the 2 best games on the SNES, but I believe them to be 2 of the best video games ever made. They are both flawless games in my opinion. That is why the SNES is my favorite system, as many of the games on it are my favorite games of all time.
This is my personal top 10 list. Pretty similar to yours:
1. Super Metroid
2. Chrono Trigger
3. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
4. Secret of Mana
5. Super Castlevania IV
6. Final Fantasy III
7. Donkey Kong Country 2
8. TMNT IV: Turtles in Time
9. Super Mario RPG
10. Mega Man X
August 18, 2012 at 11:34 pm
@Zihq:
I thought I was the only one that knew Seiken Densetsu 3 existed. It’s probably got my #1, and Star Ocean, another awesome rpg that never made it out of Japan, would be #2. Then we have most of the other games already mentioned.
August 18, 2012 at 11:46 pm
1. Super Metroid (the best sidescroller of all time)
2. Final Fantasy VI (still the greatest RPG ever made)
3. Ogre Battle
4. Donkey Kong Country 2
5. Earthbound
6. Chrono Trigger
7. Shin Megami Tensei 2
8. Breath of Fire 2
9. Mystic Ark
10. Super Mario RPG
I know, it’s RPG-heavy. Can’t be helped. Super Metroid and Donkey Kong Country 2 are two of the most well-designed games ever made. It takes that level of quality to put them in the mix with the SNESs ridiculously good RPG library. Zelda doesn’t quite make my top ten, but I wouldn’t argue with anyone who ranks it higher than I do. The game doesn’t have any real flaws. It’s just very difficult to limit this to ten.
August 19, 2012 at 12:11 am
1. The Legend Of Zelda.
2. Super Metroid
3. Secret Of Mana
4. Final Fantasy VI
5. Super Mario World

7. Super Castlevania IV
8. Yoshi’s Island
9. Plok!
10. Chrono Trigger
August 19, 2012 at 12:31 am
Great list, but I would have to add The Legend of the Mystical Ninja by Konami in there.
August 19, 2012 at 3:10 am
1. Earthbound
2. Final Fantasy VI
3. Super Mario World
4. Super Mario RPG
5. Donkey Kong Country 2
6. Super Metroid
7. Super Mario World 2:Yoshi’s Island
8. Chrono Trigger
9. Tetris Attack
10. Donkey Kong Country
August 19, 2012 at 9:13 am
Where is Atari 5200 games!
August 19, 2012 at 10:19 am
To everyone asking why EarthBound isn’t on there; if you go the AVGN tab and click “Game Collection”, you will find out that James doesn’t own EB.
August 19, 2012 at 10:30 am
Super Castlevania 4
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Final Fight
Act Raiser
Sunset Riders
Contra 3 Alien Wars
Super Turrican
A Link to the Past
Turtles In Time
Super mario Bros. Allstars/ Super Mario World
August 19, 2012 at 11:01 am
Isn’t it redundant to say “My Top 10 Favorite”? Why not simply say “My Top 10″?
August 19, 2012 at 12:39 pm
1-Lufia II Rise of the Sinistrals
2-Live-a-Live
3-Final Fantasy V
4-Terranigma
5-Soul Blazer
6-Final Fantasy IV
7-Chrono Trigger
8-Breath of Fire II
9-Zelda A Link to the Past
10-Megaman X2
After number 2 it changes everyday so… But as you can see, I’m more a RPG guy…
August 19, 2012 at 1:00 pm

2: Final Fantasy 5
3: Final Fantasy 4

5: Super Mario World
6: Yoshi’s Island
7: Super Castlevania 4

August 19, 2012 at 3:18 pm
f-zero kinda sux.
August 19, 2012 at 3:19 pm
good list, i agree with lots of it, including the order. the only things i disagree with-
it kind of blows my mind that super mario kart isn’t on there. probably the best 2 player game on the system, even over street fighter 2 (which should also be on the list at least before f-zero), because mario kart had a more basic appeal and lots of people just weren’t good at or didn’t like fighting games. so if you had friends like that, you could probably at least get them to play mario kart.
also, i think i would put star fox higher up myself, because for me, it actually gave me more challenge than ANY of those games on that list. more white knuckle adrenaline and feeling of accomplishment than any of the others BY FAR. if you actually manage to play all through that game without the black hole/warp, on the 3rd, most difficult path, and beat it…
you are basically a JEDI.
i did it at least once, if not a few times, but couldn’t ever do it consistently and i played the crap out of that game. but when you get to andross on that path, and beat him the first time, then he turns into the demon, and you busted ass to get that far and that happens and you already beat the game before and didn’t see him do that, and he does it and you’re like ‘OH SHIT’.
that was so… just unspeakably incredible and badass. you seriously had to be in THE ZONE to even get to experience that.
August 19, 2012 at 3:24 pm
yeah but i agree with the guy who commented before my last one, f-zero really kind of sucks. no 2 player battle mode, and single player just never seemed fun to me. it seriously really literally boggles my mind how someone could put f-zero above mario kart. the mario kart series only went downhill from that first entry, but the snes mario kart was probably one of the best 2player games ever. the fun you could have screwing over your buddy in that game was just tops, and there was nothing like an epic comeback in battle mode when you lose 2 ballons without taking one of theirs, then come back to get all 3 and win. fzero had none of that.
August 19, 2012 at 3:30 pm
1. Donkey Kong Country 2
2. Kirby’s Dream Course
3. Mega Man X
4. Super Metroid
5. Yoshi’s Island
6. Castlevania: Dracula X (I haven’t played Super Castlevania 4..)
7. Super Mario Allstar
… These are the games I loved and still play. I loved Super Mario world back in the days, but I haven’t felt like playing the game since them.. for some reason, and that’s why I can’t put it on my list. Peace!
August 19, 2012 at 4:15 pm
NO MEGAMAN X? WHAT THE SHIT?
1.) Mega Man X2
2.) Final Fantasy 6

10.) Lost Vikings

My top 20 SNES games would have to be…
1. Chrono Trigger
2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
3. Final Fantasy VI
4. Super Metroid
5. Super Mario World
6. EarthBound
7. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong’s Quest
8. Street Fighter II
9. Super Mario Kart
10. Final Fantasy IV
Games that got close to my top 10 are Super Castlevania IV, Turtles in Time, Secret of Mana, Star Fox and Final Fantasy V. The SNES is easily the greatest video game console of all time.
August 22, 2012 at 12:06 pm
It’s not a definitive list (regarding order), but it’s pretty close. More or less my 10 favorite games in no particular order except #1.
1. Final Fantasy II (IV)
2. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
3. Shadowrun
4. Secret of Mana
5. Final Fantasy III (VI)
6. Super Metroid
7. Super Castlevania IV
8. Super Street Fighter II: Turbo
9. Rock ‘n Roll Racing
10. Act Raiser
There are dozens of others that I held in high regard, but these are mostly my favorites.
As a testament to how much I absolutely love FInal Fantasy II, I have played it every single year for the past 20 years. Each year, I must play it all the way through. I have been faithful to this for two decades, and each time I enjoy it more and more.
August 22, 2012 at 3:11 pm
I am very surprised to not see much mention of EarthBound here. I would just list that game on all 10 spots.
August 22, 2012 at 9:01 pm
Hey James could u do your top 10 favorite PS1,N64,Saturn,Gameboy,GBA,Gamecube,Wii,PS2,etc?
August 22, 2012 at 10:23 pm
I’ve always been curious what your favorite games were, thanks for sharing them James! Mine differ slightly, but your list is full of stellar games.
1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
2. Tales of Phantasia
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Final Fantasy 3 (vi)
5. Super Metroid
6. Super Mario RPG
7. Mega Man X
8. Secret of Mana
9. Super Mario World
10. Donkey Kong Country 2
It’s interesting to note how it is rare to have a game on someone’s top ten list that doesn’t have an outstanding musical score. I think it’s both because a game where more effort was put into the music will, likely, also have more effort put into the game in general, but also because we form positive memories of the game they are attached to, and later drawn draw greater nostalgia from them.

an SNES list with no Secret of Mana is poop. A top video games of all time list without Secret of Mana would be poop. This is not my subjective opinion but an objective truth

I agree with veritas fighter, the secret of mana game was wonderful and entertaining. It was a combination of a Zelda game and an RPG, include multiplayer, and you’ve got a great game on hand. Possibly one of my all time favorite games. The sequels never came close. They did look pretty, but played horribly.

What IS it about the Super Nintendo? I don’t think I’m alone in saying nostalgia has NOTHING to do with my love for this console. Its not something from my childhood that I’ve rediscovered. Since I got one, aged 10 (back in 1994) it has always been hooked up in my home and played regularly. Even today. Especially today!
Picking my top 10 games is like Sophie’s Choice:
1. Yoshi’s Island

4. Tetris Attack
5. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
