You are good mike, but I think you should spend less time explaining the irrelevant backgrounds of the actors or directors.

Tylerd, you’ll have to download the Cinemassacre app. It’s two bucks, a worthy investment.

@Notsurprised- One of my favorite things about the Nerd/Mike movie reviews is how they really know a lot about the directors and actors (and to an extent locations) to the point where they can just bust out a bunch of trivia that you may not get to see or hear in other places. If they didn’t have trivia it would just be them saying ‘watch this and this is what happens’ or ‘don’t watch this and this is what happens’ which is stale as fuck.

You made such a case for watching this in the first minute I was kind of deflated when you said it sucked.

    Anyhow, another great review Mike.

Mike, with all the schlock you like I would think you would like this movie. I love this movie. It’s always been a classic in my mind, not schlock. The monster looks awesome, the plot is scary, and it’s got that fun Charles Band atmosphere.

Everyone, don’t take Mike’s word on this one. If you like 1980′s horror, watch it and decide for yourself if it’s good or bad.

I actually have this movie in my VHS collection. XD

  • July 2, 2012 at 2:39 pm

That’s one of the reasons why Apple sucks! It only plays THEIR formats! No substitutions allowed!

The clips you showed actually make it look kind of entertaining, but I imagine you skipped the boring parts.

Of all the stuff that came from Charles Band and Empire Pictures my Favorite has to be “Zone Troopers”. Mike you gotta do a review sometime.

Sorry to say this but now that James is back, i just think that Mike should get of the air and let James do the reviewing, Cuz Mike just isnt that good at reviewing, hes good at many other stuff, but not this.
Sounds like he takes certain movies way too serious.
Cellar Dweller is a peace of shit, but its great peace of shit.
And hes comparison on Eragon VS Star Wars and LOTR, Come on

Turns out, I’m beginning to become more of a Mike fan. I love James’s work, but with how entertaining Mike’s work is, no one should be surprised that Mike has been gaining his own fans.

You don’t have to tell me to watch Tales from the Crypt! I love that show. I used to watch it on Fox all the time as a kid. I’m not sure if any gore was edited out to get it on network TV, but it was still enjoyable, and there were some freaky stories too, like the ventriloquist episode where it is revealed that the man is so good at his craft because his Siamese Twin brother attached to his arm speaks for the dummy!

I love Creepshow, too. I wasn’t sure if they were real comics or not. I guess it’s just “inspired by” those old horror comics, as you explained. I have the first Creepshow on tape, actually.

Cellar Dweller was written by Don Mancini, who wrote Child’s Play (and all the Chucky movies), under a nom-de-plume. Empire Pictures did a lot of silly “Rubber Reality” films like this, The Dungeonmaster, Ghoulies, and Rawhead Rex. Enjoy them for what they are.

  • July 12, 2012 at 7:41 pm

This was a great review, Mike! Pish-posh on the grumblers that say to quit doing reviews just because James has finished filming the AVGN movie.

One thing that I greatly appreciate that you do that often James does not do in his movie reviews is acknowledge famous cast members like Yvonne de Carlo and provide some history/background of the movie. Keep up the good work!

Wow, after so many years, I think I finally found the movie I saw as a kid. I just remember that one last scene where there’s a chubby ugly looking monster, like the one in the video thumbnail here, and it has the symbol of darkness on its chest or upside-down David’s triangle on its forehead or something like that. We get a close-up view of its face as it comes out from the shadow, then it grins or something like that..

Thanks for reviewing all these classic horrors, Mike!

Oh No Empire Pictures is also the same film company that made TerrorVision (1983).

Did you know that Brian Robbins became later the director of the notirous horrible Eddie Murphy movies “Norbit” and “A Thousand Words” and the okay comedy “Meet Dave” with Eddie Murphy as little alien in Eddie Murphy as big robot?
