great!! i was waiting for a new video, keep up the good work guys!
June 18, 2012 at 12:17 am
Oh man, my friends and I used to play the hell out of Tower of Doom at the local arcade. We never got this one though, so it wasn’t till recently that I got to play it. You’re completely right, Mike. It’s one of the best arcade games ever and definitely an underrated gem.
March 29, 2013 at 8:58 pm
I’m very surprised that this game is not so much released in USA, because it was one of the greatest game at 1990′s. I’m a Korean nerd, and most guys that were teenage at 1990′s in south Korea (except north Korea) would remember this game.
June 18, 2012 at 12:21 am
This game is great and people arent as out of luck as you might think. Its available on both GGPO and Supercade, they are services that host arcade games and let you play them over the internet with other people. They mostly offer just fighting games, but this and tower of doom are available on there. So if you want to play it with some friends online download supercade and give it a try
June 18, 2012 at 12:27 am
Thank to Mike, i loved mondays.
Keep it up.
June 18, 2012 at 12:34 am
What nice way to unwind after a crappy work day. Anyway, thanks for exposing this sleeper classic Mike. You’ve really honed your game reviewing prowess over the last year. Keep it up bro.
June 18, 2012 at 12:36 am
Hi Mike in your video you mentioned that you do not have a Sega Saturn that can play Japanese games. Well you can buy mine off of ebay. Thanks. Look for white Japanese Sega Saturn.
June 18, 2012 at 12:48 am
great review, cool stuff
June 18, 2012 at 1:11 am
I actually liked the tower of doom better…
June 18, 2012 at 1:23 am
Wonderful video! I really like how you were as close to authentic as possible with the arcade controller, I hope more arcade reviews are in the near future. Thank you guys!
June 18, 2012 at 1:29 am
Oh man; I put a lot of quarters into this one. The replay value was incredible; there were secret dragons, cursed swords, and class-specific items that just enticed me to play again and again. Really cool pick for review!
June 18, 2012 at 2:07 am
While there no AVGN, these videos have been awesome Mike. It’s a nice change of pace and we get to see a lot more or the gameplay.
June 18, 2012 at 2:29 am
Wow ! Just Wow ! Thanks for this Mike.
June 18, 2012 at 2:39 am
Oh and you should try out the beat em up game “Cadillacs and dinosaurs”! If you haven’t played this I really recommend it to you, it’s personally one of my favourite beat em ups…
So i’m serious, if you don’t know the game, definetly check this one out! It’w worth it.
June 18, 2012 at 2:49 am
Just fyi, it’s not a floating eyeball, it’s a Beholder (been a D&D staple since the 70s, way before Big Trouble in Little China).
June 18, 2012 at 2:51 am
Ugh, religious propaganda in the commercials before the video… Nice review though.
June 18, 2012 at 2:58 am
It’s kind of weird to see good games being reviewed on Cinemassacre. But it’s also pretty nice. Oh and Mike, I think you’re just as good as James in your own way. But were there any…. Glitches in this one?
June 18, 2012 at 3:14 am
Hey guys, like retro game reviews? Check out my channel on youtube and don’t forget to comment rate or subscribe!
June 18, 2012 at 4:51 am
I remember playing this game non-stop at the bowling alley when my parents were on a bowling league. That game and Primal Rage were the 2 games that kept me busy but with this game, i seem to keep my quarters longer. Started playing it again on an emulator some time last year and finally got the chance to beat it. This game is soo awesome and holds a place in my heart from my childhood.
June 18, 2012 at 5:02 am
Awesome review, this game looks so BA!
June 18, 2012 at 5:08 am
If you ask me the best beat ‘em ups in the arcades were Cadillacs and Dinosaurs and the Punisher. Especially the first one was one of my favorites.
June 18, 2012 at 6:25 am
This looks pretty awesome, thanks for the tip Mike! I also have an arcade stick and will definitely try this game.
June 18, 2012 at 8:09 am
You don’t need a Japanese Saturn. Just buy one of those Action Replay carts. They play import games, add RAM, and let you use cheat codes. They cost $24.99-$49.99 on average. eStarland.com usually carries them, though eBay typically has better prices.
June 18, 2012 at 8:21 am
I wish Capcom would release a Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 3 featuring this game, its prequel, that robot fighting game, that game with the Tiger chick, X-Men, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men Vs Street Fighter, Marvel Vs Street Fighter, Marvel Vs Capcom, Cacom Vs SNK Pro, and any other arcade game never released in the U.S. and direct arcade ports we never got I mean, Marvel Super Heoes and Marvel Vs Capcom were good and we got Capcom Vs SNK, but the Pro version wasn’t arcade quality.
June 18, 2012 at 9:05 am
I remember Tower of Doom, an this sequel looks awesome. It never made it to my local hangouts. It may be a bit too deep a game to casually play in an arcade.
June 18, 2012 at 10:01 am
you Can do Arcade Games in your House’
its Called MAME Arcade Emulator.
June 18, 2012 at 10:10 am
There are 2 Games That i Cant Find for the Mame Arcade Emulator’
its Dragons Lair’ & Six Gun Select.
June 18, 2012 at 10:12 am
I now need/want an X-arcade joystick. I love cinemassacre but my wallet hates it.
June 18, 2012 at 10:13 am
I cannot believe Mike did not include “Streets of Rage” The 2nd one is an excellent title with a killer soundtrack.
June 18, 2012 at 10:57 am
Nice,more arcade games Mike
June 18, 2012 at 11:07 am
jesus christ this game looks fuckin amazing
June 18, 2012 at 11:18 am
i Own This Game + More then 10000 Other Arcade Games Right on my Computer
June 18, 2012 at 12:21 pm
Great Job again. More arcade games for sure. Dont forget the alien vs. predator arcade game by Capcom as well. Surely on par with final fight.
June 18, 2012 at 1:27 pm
Dudes, with all respect, check the PC gaming possibilities, you´ll be amazed.
And, btw I agree with Mike, this game is pobrably the best arcade beat em up ever.
June 18, 2012 at 1:42 pm
i play lots of arcade games at home with my x-arcade!
great video and i love this game!
June 18, 2012 at 1:49 pm
Oh, SHIT. What a game!
No matter how well you’ve done so far, Mike, this one review is for me, your Opera Prima!!
June 18, 2012 at 2:24 pm
This looks like one of those arcade games that you got 20 bucks from your parents and ONLY played this game for the next 2 hours. Awesome looking game btw!
June 18, 2012 at 3:04 pm
Hey mike you should work a company to pick up the best games to do an arcade game collection
June 18, 2012 at 3:06 pm
I bet kids nowadays dont even know what an arcade is
June 18, 2012 at 3:15 pm
Why nobody ever remember about the best Beat’em up ever Cadillacs and Dinosaurs?!
June 18, 2012 at 3:23 pm
This game looks crazy awesome I think I will import the japanese version for the sega saturn, and play it on my north American saturn since I have the action replay cartridge for the saturn which will let me play imported games. Its great to see you are still filling the empty gaps of videos that James cannot do at the moment, look forward to more! (especially game reviews!!!)
June 18, 2012 at 3:43 pm
Wow, this one looks so awesome! I’ve played Tower of Doom, but never heard of this. I would have been all over it.
June 18, 2012 at 3:53 pm
My favorites arcade Beat’em up form the 90s were:
Aliens vs Predator
The 2 Dungeon and Dragons games
Cadilllac and Dinosaurs
Knights of the Round
Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder
June 18, 2012 at 4:03 pm
Speaking of other Dragon Capcom games, you and somebody else ought to try Quiz and Dragons. It tests your general knowledge of 80s and early 90s pop culture. It’s a damn shame that there aren’t more of these in the US, even though they’re everywhere in Japan.
June 18, 2012 at 4:08 pm
Wow, i have never seen this game before at any arcade, what a damn shame ! This game looks absolutely amazing. I know i would of used a crap load of quarters on that one.
June 18, 2012 at 4:37 pm
there is a similar game made by Chinese company called knights of valor
it is also equally fun and goodlooking
June 18, 2012 at 4:51 pm
Here some great other titles as well:
Punisher,cadilacs and dinosaurs,metamorphic force,crime fighters 1-2,aliens,alien VS predators,batle sircuits,violent storm,check them out as well man!
June 18, 2012 at 4:55 pm
Cool review. I’ve never heard of that game before! Doesn’t matter cause BARE KNUCKLE 3 IS THE GREATEST BEAT EM UP!! HAHA!!
June 18, 2012 at 5:05 pm
SNES was and always be one of my favorite machines but i think that it not had the power for lift up the D&D games mike, remember ports like knights of the round, magic shord, king of dragons? even those had some small missing details on the SNES.On the psp runs like a charm though with a emulator that i have! but back then it would be imposible, even on the sega saturn needed a memory expantion to run.
June 18, 2012 at 5:07 pm
Oh i forgot and sengoku games from SNK those were pretty awesome as well! nice review again.
June 18, 2012 at 5:13 pm
I know that when James starts taking me “back to the past, to play some shitty games that suck ass” again, this game won’t be one of them. Now I just want to find an arcade with one of these machines.
June 18, 2012 at 5:14 pm
Personally, I like these reviews where Mike is being himself and not trying to be too snarky and sarcastic. He’s actually really entertaining to listen to.
As far as the game goes, I remember my friend and I had played it when we used MAME’s new random ROM thing when you open up the program. We couldn’t get his arcade sticks to work, unfortunately, so we had to use PS3 controllers. Nevertheless, this game was awesome, and I’d never dream of seeing a review of it on Cinemassacre. I’m glad to see it, though. Thanks Mike!
June 18, 2012 at 5:48 pm
Great review Mike, I like reviews like this, keep them coming.
June 18, 2012 at 5:55 pm
Thanks for not uploading at youtube, youtube sucks ass, SPRINGBOARD IS THE BEST VIDEO PLAYER EVER
WHO THE FUCK NEEDS BUFFERING ?
June 18, 2012 at 6:24 pm
And of course, being a game from Capcom, it’s only logic to have a final boss that takes over the background.
June 18, 2012 at 6:25 pm
This game looks awesome!!
Why have I never heard of it?
I want to play!!
June 18, 2012 at 6:51 pm
Honestly, that looks really fucking cool! Hope it goes on xbla or ps3.
June 18, 2012 at 7:03 pm
Man there is a Arcade Machine of this about 30 Km from where i live. ANd make more of “something” leftovers thats awesome. Principally about Master System exclusive Brasillian Games, Genesis too
June 18, 2012 at 8:31 pm
If you can track down an Action Replay for Saturn, you can use it to play Japanese games.
June 18, 2012 at 8:43 pm
Wow this game looks awesome. Kind of reminds me of Gauntlet Legends but 10x better.
Also about Turtles In Time. Raphael and Michaelangelo have shorter ranges, but they do more damage. It takes less his to take down enemies.
I can’t remember if thats true for all Turtles games, but for sure it works in Turtles IV
June 18, 2012 at 8:58 pm
I actually bought this game for PC from South Korea. It only cost me $10 and the game itself is in English. The only tricky part is that the menus to choose the game and set the controls are in Korean. Besides that, it is a great and emulatorless way to enjoy this game. I just hooked up my arcade stick to my PC and got lost in the game for a few hours. It was awesome.
June 18, 2012 at 9:04 pm
awh no Monday Mike movie review. I always like checking out the movies you recommend?
If your looking for more movies. Here is one that might make a good review. It looks super corny and I think they stole the music for the trailer from Castlevania.
Any who keep up the reviews, Its always a highlight when i come and see a new one.
June 19, 2012 at 12:26 am
Mike, sounds like this was released on the Sega Saturn as part of the “Dungeons & Dragons Collection”.
Great review BTW!
June 19, 2012 at 12:40 am
Big thanks to this Muther Fucker Mike, for keeping Cinemassacre interesting while James was out doing filming.
June 19, 2012 at 12:41 am
You say there is more to than your standard beat em up, but really there is more to it than your standard arcade game period, a lot of RPG features in it.
June 19, 2012 at 3:14 am
great review mike! Never heard nor seen anything of this game till now. but it seems like one of the best arcade beatumups ever, gatta find a port for my friend and I to play. nice one mo fo mike!
June 19, 2012 at 3:33 am
Great review Mike. D&D:SoM is indeed one of THE best beat’em ups. I just wish you mentioned a few things left off. For example, the pallet- swapped characters have slightly different magical spells, there are shops at the end of each level to buy items with your in-game gold, and there are alternative fighting styles.
For example, the fighters can dual-wield swords, the Cleric can get a ball-and-chain as well as a staff that shoots snakes. And there’s even cursed swords that have to be purified.
If you’re interested, get these D&D Roms for free for MAME and google how to program the arcade rom to accept 4 players (there’s some F key you have to hit when the ROM first boots up to get to the ROM’s set-up menu).
June 19, 2012 at 8:00 am
This game looks very similar to Legend for the SNES. Did they share some of the development team or something?
June 19, 2012 at 8:19 am
What is the game at 0:17 seconds? Please someone!
June 19, 2012 at 8:32 am
I fucked off my chores to watch this and now my wide is PISSSSSED!
Great video Mike brought back some awesome memories of pumping coins into this machine.
June 19, 2012 at 8:33 am
June 19, 2012 at 10:47 am
Great review. My friends and I played the crap out of this in college.
This is easily a better beat ‘em up than most of the other ones you mentioned, because it has far more depth. Old Konami beat ‘em ups were party-friendly mashers with cheap bosses, Capcom beat ‘em ups had more of a polished fighting game feel to them.
Mike, think you could review Capcom’s Alien vs. Predator arcade beat ‘em up sometime? Or Revenge of Death Adder?
June 19, 2012 at 1:22 pm
I think I remember seeing this game at some roller skating ring back in the 90′s but I didnt have any quarters at the time. Seeing arcade games like this always makes me a bit sad because one of my favorite things as a kid was going to the arcade with rolls of quarters and playing tons of games all day. Now arcades are pretty much a thing of the past. Gaming has expanded so much at home that there really isnt much of a market for arcades anymore.
June 19, 2012 at 2:01 pm
Epic game review. I really wish this one made It to the consoles, even If It did take away from graphics, sounds, and hopefully (not) taking anything away the game itself. It looks like a really fun time to play with some buddies, have a few beers, or joints, and spend a weekend playing through different ways.
On another note, once James is less busy with the movie, It would be totally rad for Mike and James to do some reviews together.. whereas Mike would offer good points towards the game and James would get pissed off and point out the funny, shitty aspects of the games. Just an idea :]
But anyway, keep it up Mike! You’ve been doing a great job keeping us gamer folk entertained!
June 19, 2012 at 2:23 pm
Looks like the arcade machines live their second renaissance. I keep hearing about arcade games throughout the net, Classic Game Room, etc. I decided to build my own cabinet and put in a PC to be the MAME emulator. I was surprised that how much information I could find about the subject on the web, it’s just amazing!
June 19, 2012 at 2:34 pm
Nice arcade setup Mike. Find yourself an old cabinet (Mine is a gutted Outrun machine) for that authentic arcade feeling…and if you have the room for one.
June 19, 2012 at 2:36 pm
5:48 Megaman X4 (spit mushoom) much?
5:46 Megaman X4 (spit mushoom) much?
June 19, 2012 at 8:02 pm
I love this game! Did you know the game decides what items to start you with based on your name? Like, you can enter CAP to start with the character’s magic hat item.
Another fun beat-em-up by Capcom is Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, with the added bonus of it being totally insane!
June 19, 2012 at 8:38 pm
Wow that’s certainly a hidden gem. Reminds me of playing arcade emulators on my old computer; Punisher and Knights of the Round were my two favorite beat-em-ups.
June 19, 2012 at 11:31 pm
muthafuckin Mike: Dude, I have an enormous library of MAME roms and I’ve NEVER played this one! After watching this review, I immediately went to my library and found that I in fact do have this rom! JOY!!
Aside from helping me discover a very sweet arcade game, there are so many that I have played that deserve reviews! I’m sure you could spend many years reviewing arcade games and connect nostalgically with your audience by doing so. I don’t think anyone would fault you for having to use an emulator.
June 20, 2012 at 2:01 am
i remember this game… it kicked ass
June 20, 2012 at 6:18 am
This game looks awesome, I’ve never played it before. It would be cool if they would port it to the Xbox Live Arcade or the PSN like they did with X-men and Simpsons. Also, since its a Capcom game, I’d love to see Sin as a downloadable playable character for UMvC3. I would think that since they made the game they probable own the rights to the character at least and wouldn’t have to go through Wizards of the Coast to include her.
June 20, 2012 at 7:53 am
I picked up a copy of this at the Too Many Games convention. Awesome port to the Saturn. Even in Japanese it is still a blast to play!
June 20, 2012 at 4:07 pm
Sweet, after seeing this I checked and it’s on all the popular torrent sites! picked up a copy and have been playing for the last hour
lotta fun, definitely was ahead of it’s time.
June 20, 2012 at 4:43 pm
Love this game, i play it all the time!! with brothers
June 20, 2012 at 6:09 pm
Thanks Mike, never heard about this game before, it looks AWSOME! I also would recommend Cadash, it’s a 4 player coop arcade games set in a sword and sorcery universe and it kicks ass!
June 20, 2012 at 7:44 pm
MIIIIIIIIIIIKE !!!!!! You HAVE to play Dragon’s Crown that is coming out next year ! Here is the link :
And yes I created an account just to tell you that.
June 20, 2012 at 10:53 pm
Nice video, Mike. I’m really enjoying this hidden gem style of series. Please keep them up.
June 21, 2012 at 3:55 am
Mike, how could you forget SENGOKU???!!!
June 23, 2012 at 6:00 am
I seem to be having trouble loading videos lately.
June 25, 2012 at 12:34 am
You can play this on Kaillera, Mame or Supercade. I recommend Supercade for online play because it seems to have the least ammount of lag, input delay, disconnects and crashes. In my honest opinion, this is the best beat ‘em up of all time. So many characters, moves, spells, items, secrets, and enemies. To top it off the replay value is EXTREMELY high. Head over to Damdai.com to download and install Supercade and then use Romnation.com or Coolrom.com ( but only if you already own the rom legally! ) to get the rom. If anyone here wants to game with me my username is the same as it is here: KimSunil. Hope to play with you guys soon!
June 25, 2012 at 1:11 am
Good review, never played that particular game but looks awesome and may have to give it a try. Looks like it would have cost a bundle to play in the arcade considering long enough to level up and all the things to do.
And at the risk of sounding like a complete nerd..
“Floating Eyeball thing” = Beholder
June 25, 2012 at 8:02 am
Great video Mike! I play that game emulated on my Dingoo A330(looks kinda like a GBA Micro) along with some other Capcom classics. Are you familiar with Data East’s NightSlashers? Its like Final Fight meets Resident Evil and for it’s time (1993) it had a fairly deep combat system for a beat em’ up. Again great video review.
June 25, 2012 at 5:12 pm
Whoa, that game looks awesome! Too bad I won’t be able to play it any time soon. I do hope it comes to a home console as maybe a downloadable or arcade collection, as you said!
June 26, 2012 at 11:51 am
Great video Mike! This is also one of my favorite arcade games, a friend of mine showed it to me years ago. Some of the vendors have secret messages that only appear when you click them or certain parts of their bodies during the shop sequences. I think I remember one hot elf chick says ‘I’m not for sale’ when you click her body somewhere…
As someone mentioned below there is a game in development called ‘Dragon’s Crown’ which is very similar to this. One of the guys in charge is George Kamitani (Vanillaware: Odin Sphere), and he apparently did some work for Shadows over Mystara back in the day (if my info is correct!). I’m looking forward to Dragon’s Crown!
June 27, 2012 at 10:06 pm
I played this all the time in arcades and did the rom a ton with friends. Glad to see a video of it! Really wish it’d get Arcaded on xbox or psn.
July 1, 2012 at 5:29 pm
Did you ever play the side-beatemup “Captain Commando”? That’s one of my favorites because it’s so odd, but I only ever saw it a few different places.
July 4, 2012 at 5:27 pm
Great but not so distant memories. I still play this game every now and then on my custom built arcade cabinet. Here’s the link for you all to enjoy.
July 5, 2012 at 7:29 am
this is indeed a game that would do nicely on XBLA . maybe spice up the graphics a bit if possible . But even this version would be great . So much better then Frogger ….
July 12, 2012 at 10:30 pm
Guys…get MAME…and get this. What a game. I could not beleive how LONG it is…and how anyone could ever capitalize on all of it in an arcade.
July 13, 2012 at 4:56 pm
You forgot to mention the Asterix arcade beat em up, that’s probably the best one. You’d like it if you like this game.
July 31, 2012 at 8:43 am
July 31, 2012 at 8:45 am
I knew it! That spiral staircase background shown multiple times throughout the video is exactly the same as the one used in a later Mega Man X game on the PSX. I think 4 or 5…and I think it may have been Cyber Peacock’s stage. I forget exactly though, but it’s definately the same. Not too suprising since Capcom made both…but it’s crazy I remember that. lol
Also I loved this game in Arcade.
August 10, 2012 at 12:47 am
It seems like the best port is always the arcade… which sucks because you gotta bring quarters. And quarters. And quarters.
January 1, 2013 at 9:21 pm
Damn this game looks totally badass. I’m surprised I never heard of it until now. They should really release this on the PSN or something with online play like they did for the X-Men arcade game.
January 5, 2013 at 6:17 pm
Then, how about getting a 4M Memory Plus or Free Region Key Cartridge for the Sega Saturn so you could play any type of game despite the region ?
March 16, 2013 at 11:40 pm
Hey Mike, great news! This game and ‘Tower of Doom’ are coming to XBLA and PSN this year. Now we’ll all be able to try the game out.
March 17, 2013 at 1:13 pm
Looks like this is coming to XBLA and PSN nice.
March 18, 2013 at 6:05 am
I know this video is old, but since Mike is a big fan, he should check this out. Tower of Doom and Shadow of Mystara are both coming to PSN and Xbox Live – gamespot.com/forums/topic/29366725/dungeons-amp-dragons-shadow-over-mystara-amp-tower-of-doom–psn-xbla-
March 22, 2013 at 2:22 pm
Great review Mike. You actually reminded me of this game and brought back some old memories of playing this. I agree this is probably the BEST arcade beat em up ever. Thanks for the memories!
March 22, 2013 at 5:06 pm
The ports are apparently also coming to the Wii U eShop and Steam.
March 22, 2013 at 5:17 pm
niiice never heard of this one !
March 27, 2013 at 9:29 pm
You may be happy to know that this game and the other D&D arcade game are coming to xbox live arcade soon.
March 29, 2013 at 6:55 pm
looks like a really great game, but I live in europe, so I already know, I will never be able to play it
