HAHA, an unexpected yet entertaining entry. however, i can’t help but feel your can’t really fault Power Rangers itself with such goofy monsters, but rather the original sentai shows they came from. Best to judge the original context before judging the product that came here. Exceptions to this would be the spray-painted-blue Mr. Ticklesneezer, which was created purely for the american show, and the fact that the pumpkinhead was rapping, which was dubbed for the american show. Also possibly the purse monster, tho i can’t remember if it was from a later sentai or if it was created for the american show.
Also, a little tidbit about how combining robots usually take so long to form without ever being attacked, the recent series Voltron Force actually covered this very flaw! They were battling a monster that i think would attack them whenever they tried to form Voltron, so they had to learn how to form Voltron in an INSTANT! Finally some writers were actually thinking, haha.
I never liked the Power Rangers. They totally ripped off the Voltron cartoon series from the 80s. By the time PR came out I was too old to watching that kind of stuff.
Interesting choice. The monsters you chose were A LOT more detailed and had better roles in the Super Sentai Series (the Japanese show PR came from).
For Example, the Frankenstein Monster’s Explosion didn’t happen in the Japanese show. He cracked like that and became a zombie/undead version which looked really awesome then that monster turned into one they called Satan…yes…Satan! Frankenstein to Satan blew my mind when I first saw it. It was freaking awesome and is one of my favorite parts of all Super Sentai. Check it out sometime Great review otherwise
A lot, and I mean A LOT, of the footage used in power rangers were from the japanese version made like 5~10 years before. So they hashed together footage of a multicultural gang with footage of the japanese series when they are in costume.
Actually Zyuranger was from 1993 just like power rangers Masked rider was using old footage from a decade prior and Doogrisa Voltron ripped off super sentai
This was entertaining and enjoyable. I would love to see a list of your Top 10 favorite MMPR Monsters in the future. After mentioning how you liked some of the coller ones, can’t help but wonder which you are talking about.
Personally my favorite character was Goldar…at least in the beginning when he was actually a tough, mean enemy who actually gave the Rangers trouble, even beating them now and again. As time went on he became less bad ass and more of a comical side character who would always get beat when fighting the Rangers or just run off.
Actually Mike there was a reason why the Power Rangers couldnt just hop into the Megazord and step on the monster.
On the first episode when Zordon gave them their powers he also said that they had to follow 3 rules or they would lose their powers.
1. Never use your power for personal gain
2. Keep your identity a Secret. No one may ever know that you are a Power Ranger.
and the third one…
3. NEVER ESCALATE A BATTLE UNLESS RITA FORCES YOU TO.
So you see even if they wanted they couldnt just call the Megazord they had to wait until the shit hit the fan to call the Megazord and yes I saw the series up until Operation Overdrive when I just couldnt watch it anymore… because working for the goverment doesnt give you enough time to watch Power Rangers
As for some of the bad guys, when Saban was producing the American show, they ran out of material and the Japanese company TOEI (I believe) ended up creating extra footage just for the American version of Power Rangers. There is no doubt that the Purse Monster is one of those last-minute bad guys.
I say go for reviewing the first season or whatever you’ve seen. I look forward to that!
Are you kidding me? No Pineoctopus? Come on, a pineapple/octopus monster is perhaps the worst idea ever, not to mention it’s also a clown that turns people into cardboard cutouts.
Nice list, though missing Babe Ruthless. Seriously, a baseball player…
Kinda disappointed Pudgy Pig was in here because he actually had good inspiration behind him. He’s based on the soldiers from the Odyssey who visited Circe’s island and gorged themselves on her food, which turned them into pigs. That’s why he has the Greek helmet. I always liked how they drew not only his appearance from such a myth but also his powers.
Power Rangers is rubbish!!! Although I did use a Power Rangers mask in a video I made with my son… it was used to make an alien. Feel free to check it out, the video is on youtube and is called Alien Planet Episode 1. I’m not one to spam usually, but it seems appropriate this time. I think if you click on my cinemassacre profile you should find a link to my youtube page. Don’t worry if none of you can be bothered to check it out, the vids there aren’t really made for an audience, just for my son.
Oh well, the link doesn’t work… but you can still just write youtube.com/thestumptube into the address bar to find it. Anyway, keep up the ace reviews Mike!!
I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard someone say that they watched Power Rangers because of the monster of the week. Anyway, there were a lot of cheesy monsters on Power Rangers, but what do you expect from Japanese costume designers? The Japanese are awesome storytellers, but they often come up with ideas that Americans would be embarrassed to use and just run with them. In fact, I’ve seen episodes of Super Sentai where it was very clear that they weren’t being serious and they intentionally designed ridiculous monster costumes to fit the quirky stories of those episodes.
For all of you Voltron fans out there, Power Rangers was not a ripoff of Voltron. Power Rangers was based off of a Japanese TV show called Super Sentai, which predates the original Japanese source material for Voltron (Beast King GoLion) by 6 years. Furthermore, Beast King GoLion ran for 1 season and Toei has aired at least 35 seasons of Super Sentai and doesn’t show signs of stopping. It’s true that Voltron premiered 9 years before Power Rangers did, but Voltron didn’t last for 18 seasons, did it? By calling Power Rangers a ripoff of Voltron, you’re not making a valid criticism, you’re just making an ignorant statement.
I have a Pudgy Pig action figure on my desk, so I didn’t expect to see him on the top 10. He’s just such a fun character and as TJOmega said, his back story is kinda cool.
Well like other people are saying, it’s all because of the Japanese original which was adapted into Power Rangers. Quite sloppily at that.
The show that the 1st MMPR season took its monsters from was themed around legends and fairytales, so the monsters needed to follow. That’s not a bird, that’s a cockatrice. You know, like the one that turns stuff to stone? Let me say this – of all Super Sentai shows, the one that the first MMPR was based on was probably the most bizzare. And sure the costumes might look goofy but it didn’t help that the american adaptation often cut down the stories attached to them opting to fill the screentime with fighting grunts instead.
The tofu guy (the one with a trumpet) was a comedic relief monster from the show that followed that challenged the yellow ranger of that season to a drinking game and was thorougly tricked afterwards. So yeah, comedic relief.
Personally, I got sick of it half way through Turbo, which looking back was one of the worst seasons. Later on I also watched Dino Thunder which was pretty awesome.
Oh yes. I always looked forward to the monster of the week and would get really annoyed when it was something that sucked.
The Frankenstein Monster episode really sucked. Despite what Mike says, he dominated the Rangers and they never once laid a finger on him until they pulled their finishing move out of nowhere. For a two on one battle, they looked very weak against him.
Yeah, I’m curious about the top 10 best monsters too! I loved this show as a kid and I am currently in the process of watching the entire first few seasons again with a friend for nostalgia.
Need to review Power Ranger games, there’s a shit ton of them. The one I remember is the mighty morphin one for gameboy, it’s a side scroller that is hard as shit! The whole game is just trial and error and it pissed the hell out of me as a kid.
Thanks for the Monday Vid, Mike! You have gotten much better at these reviews. I definitely appreciate the minimal cursing (I know it must be hard for you). I also think you have gone up a few charisma points since you started out. Keep up the fun, man!
Great idea for this weeks video! I stopped watching Power Rangers around the same time. When Zack, Trini, and Jason left…. Just wasn’t the same after that.
I stopped watching Power rangers after the first movie but before devatox…. after they introduced her everything went downhill and is still going that way.
@ Likalaruku Linkara may sound smart but really he has terrible opinions on stuff. Dont be fooled into thinking he has a quality opinion just because he has a “review show”
Wow, I remember the pig and the Frankenstein, and I seem the recall the elf guy. But I don’t remember how cheesy they all were. Good call with the nostalgia, Mike. You’re doing a very good job keeping the site active.
People didn’t understand quite what exactly were the 90s style cartoon type monsters on power rangers.I remember seeing this as well and had people laugh at me ever time i said its fun to wach. For me waching power rangers was a hate and love thing at the same time and to tell you the truth some times i was with the badies. The monsters on the series was produced so bad because the entire thing with rangers it actualy come out from japan having the series originaly named super sentai, thats why all those type of series called that i think. Its really bad to see also the guy in the zord costume doing all those uncofortable moves all the times like the poor guy trying get away from there.I remember caughting my self wach the series because was cheesy as hell with all those ridiculous monsters and the fact that i enjoyed allot to see the wich repulsa screams OH MY MONSTEEER whe she looses. All those kind of things reminded me allot vilains like shreder and not only that he always had to deal with goons, thats why i believe that the rangers monsters were so bad.Because the producers try to make the series look like cartoon series monsters in that way so it is more suitable for smaller ages i think. The japanese rangers are more apealing though but for me still its ridiculous to see guys on costumes move like ritards. Its good when you see it on an anime like voltron, voltes 5,saber rider etc,but no when it comes to live action flicks because it looks like ridiculous.A small diference was the film that were produced that for the first time they make the machines come to live with cgi, crappy though but was more suitable than this that we see most of the time on the series.Already some japanese powrr rangers style like power rangers series allready use this techics i wonder why not the us rangers didn’t make this hapen? they don’t have the budget?
Did anyone else find the Pink Ranger hot as fuck? Just check out the title card for the third worse monster. Damn, I had the 13 year old hots for Amy Jo Johnson.
YA there was some pretty bad villains but i guess it didn’t matter too much since they did more or less the same thing every show. Remember seeing the first ep. when it first premiered. Was like wtf is this before it started but was hooked for a bit. Watched up to about the same part as mike and a lo of other people it seems.. Around Zedd and before they changed any characters
If I had something to add (why wouldn’t I about this topic?), it would be to point attention to Mother Fucker Mike’s comment about Lord Zedd. He was JUST “alright”? Upon retrospect, I’m impressed that a character as gruesome and evil looking as Zedd was on the Power Rangers.
Zedd looked liked he deserved to be in a better, more adult oriented, show or movie. – Those rippling muscles on his skinless body – The lightly armored look of his metal exoskeleton – That mysteriously concealing shredder-like mask covering all but his exposed brain – That low, raspy, almost gurgly voice. SCARY!
@Kyle Roger. The reason why Zed is only just “alright” is because of his demeanor and the way he acted. he may look bad ass but he doesnt act bad ass, especially after Rita comes back then hes just a joke character
Of all the places to find an awesome parody, Playboy Magazine did a hilarious parody in comic book style in their magazines called “Mighty Morphine Power Rangers” and being high all the time. Was pretty funny in context.
Mike, you totally neglected the oyster monster. I haven’t watched power rangers in years but it still strikes me as looking like a giant vagina with a pearl for a clit and it ejaculated foamy pink slime. If you don’t believe me, look up the episode where Zack the Black Ranger is trying to impress his crush by buying her jewelry. I looked it up the thing’s name is Oysterizer.
When this show was on the air I was going through puberty…many afternoons were spent fapping to Kimberly. Now after seeing this vid of her making snow angels, I think I will revisit my childhood once again!
It’s the Japanese creators of the Super Sentai franchise that created the monsters. The American version used stock footage from that series. So blame the Japanese creators of Super Sentai for the bad monsters.
Nice little top ten list. Everyone knows that pig monster. He was lame, but he was the first episode monster, wasn’t he? Eh. Purse Monster should have thrown tampons! Hahahhaa. It seems like Rita would turn anything into a monster. Pretty silly and ridiculous!
so the black guy was the black ranger black suit the asian girl was the yellow ranger an the hot chick was the pink years latter what the fuck were they thinking
All I can say is research “Super Sentai” then it will make more sense. As for why is the monster don’t attack while they form, watch Tomeki Sentai Gobuster because they addressed that.
Watch Super Sentai instead! Power Rangers isn’t nearly as good as the originals. Zyuranger was amazing. I’d finish it if it were subbed. Gokaiger and Shinkenger are also awesome.
Well Thanks Mike! Wow, growing up and even still now, actually, forevermore! I Love The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers! I still to this day am Blessed to own many of the great, retro Power Ranger figurines! Growing up in the 90′s, during Christmas time and so forth, waking up to amazing gifts all over the place including POWER RANGERS! – How I Love those Memories. . <3.

Mike, your reasons for number 5 are pretty much the exact same reasons why I hate Adventure Time.
April 9, 2012 at 12:58 am
I really had hated and still hate this fucking cheesy stupid crazy show. Its one of them shows, which makes the kids stupid.
April 9, 2012 at 1:04 am
Is Power Rangers the show where they say “Go Go Ranger whatever”? Or is it where they say Yabba Dabba Rangers?
April 9, 2012 at 1:18 am
Go Go Pink Ranger….. Nice!
April 9, 2012 at 1:21 am
judging from the picture, the blue ranger’s special power is super long neck.

Acutally Mike if you want to see a review of the power rangers series, Linkara from Atop the fourth wall and TGWTG has one.
April 10, 2012 at 3:17 pm
I should have said if you wanted to see the series review. Sorry Mike I did not mean that the way it sounded

I used to watch this series as well. Thanks Mike… for making me remember your top 10 shitty monsters from my childhood >_>. lolol

April 11, 2012 at 6:28 am

April 12, 2012 at 5:38 am

All I can say is research “Super Sentai” then it will make more sense. As for why is the monster don’t attack while they form, watch Tomeki Sentai Gobuster because they addressed that.

Oh come on, swartznegers freeze was awesome.
April 15, 2012 at 10:55 am
^ Don’t you mean he was cool??
April 20, 2012 at 2:01 pm
Watch Super Sentai instead! Power Rangers isn’t nearly as good as the originals. Zyuranger was amazing. I’d finish it if it were subbed. Gokaiger and Shinkenger are also awesome.
