Sonic was my first experience with a 16 bit game. It was supposed to be Altered Beast. Since it originally came packed in with the Sega Genesis, but I couldn’t afford it. So I started saving. By the time I had the money. Sonic was the pack in game. So I got that one.
I really didn’t know what to expect. I was playing SMS and NES for years. What this going to be like? How amazing would it look? Would it be a big leap from 8-bit. There was no Internet then. Just pics in Magazines and TV ads. Well I put Sonic in the Genesis and turned it on. First thing that blew me away was the high quality sound. Then the title screen appeared. It looked impressive. Then I started the game. OMG! There was this high quality expensive look to the game. There was weight to it. If that makes sense. I was used to 8-bit games with simple colors, floaty characters and flickering, but this had none of that!
The next thing I noticed was the parallax scrolling. It had this 3D depth to it. It was truly mindblowing at the time. I had a shitty 10 year old 13″ RCA TV with mono sound back then. I remember thinking at the time. This piece of shit TV isn’t worthy of these graphics and sounds. A year old I had new bigger TV. Anyway, for me Sonic was the first time I really felt like I was playing Arcade machine quality games at home. It really was a game changer for me.
I don’t really like Sonic. I remember seeing it first I also liked the design, the colors and speed but never had a chance to play it. Looking back now and I can’t understand what’s good in this game. The game’s so fast, you miss most of the golden rings and it’s like rushing through a game you can’t wait to finish to throw aside… Sure it looked good but other than that nothing was added. I used to play Amiga games and I liked to feel that I’m in control of the game like I could search through the level, find every item I can get, not just rushing through and dying on an oncoming hazard which you didn’t know would come.
I’ll probably be labeled a “Sega Fan Boy” or be kicked in the teeth for not being a “Nintendo Fan Boy”, but honestly I don’t care. I love Sega. I did back when me and my family first got a Sega Master System in 1988, then a Sega Genesis in 1991. I loved the bright and colorful graphics, which was in pretty much every single video game ever made for their systems. I loved the bright and powerful music, much clearer sounding to me than what the NES had to offer. The different assortment of games I always felt were better too. Sega was just the greatest thing ever to me then, and even to this day. It’s a shame Sega no long makes a video game system. I’d love to see Sega and Nintendo still battling it out to this day. Now with that being said, I love Nintendo as well. They had a lot of great games, and I actually own the NES and SNES along with my Master System and Genesis. All four get played quite a bit at my house. Like you, James, I had a friend who had the opposite system over at their house. I’d go over to their place and play on their NES and later SNES systems just as they’d come over and play Sega systems at mine. Now the funny thing is this. He wanted to always come and play my Sega. Of course I’m not going to argue and ruin a relationship with a good friend, so I just did whatever he wanted since I loved my Sega systems anyhow. I also loved the advertising battles of the late 80s and early 90s between Sega and Nintendo. Some were just down right brutal to each other. They were both the epitome of what a great gaming system and good marketing can do. I sadly don’t see that happening anymore. Maybe because there are too many systems in the big market that decided to just be friendly and let every company release their game on all the systems. Just seems too complacent to me. Our generation sure had a great childhood, right James? : )
The only really bad Sonic title I can think of is Sonic 3D. It was a top down view and was just awkward to play. I’ve played Sonic 1, 2, and 3, as well as Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Spinball. The crazy thing about Sonic & Knuckles was that you could take the first three games for Sonic The Hedgehog and and put them on the top of the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge to allow Knuckles, and I think other characters, to play in the original three games. I’m not sure if you could play Spinball or 3D on it or not. Never gave it a try, but now I am curious. Great review James. It’s funny. Me and my sister, who is your age, used to play Sonic 2 together as well and she’d always play Tails as well. I’m betting your sister is probably about my age, 29.
Wow, I was really surprised with your last words in the video. A HUGE Nintendo fan saying that, just… wow. I salute you James, the world needs more gamers like you.
Sonic Generations recently made me re-discover why I used to play the old Genesis Sonic games with my best friend every single day when we were kids. Sooo much fun.

No Sonic & Knuckles? I’m surprised that game and/or the whole ability to put Sonic 2 or 3 into the S&K cartridge to play as Knuckles in those games wasn’t even mentioned. Maybe he just doesn’t have any memories with that…
wtf? Sonic 3 & Knuckles bitches!!! Best motha f**kin kawaii-ass game ever made. Power ups, different bonus stages, more levels, kickass music. Can be Sonic or Sonic & Tails, or Tails, or Knuckles. Getting Super AND Hyper. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeei Rarely drowned in Sonic 3/knux. Dat last level and seeing that ending. AND fighting motha f**kin Super Mecha Sonic.
I’ve been watching your videos since forever, and I’ve got to say, this is one of the best. I love the nerd character but I think you should do more videos like this, with no script, and since you’re busy with the movie, making this kind of videos is an option to say “guys! I’m alive!”. Keep up with the good work!
I was just thinking how awesome it would be to see a new James video, and BAM! while watching the Monster madness 3 playlist, this pops up.
I love you James, AND MIKE!! ( I actually found your videos first and love your informative style!) It’s *almost* like the AVGN is still around with all these smaller videos :3
I gotta say, Sonic and Sega Genesis were the two things that made me want to become a video game designer. It was my first video game, and one of my earliest memories with my older cousin Bill. During the summer, I’d sleep over his house like every weekend, and after a long, fun day with the family and playing in the swimming pool, we’d go up to his bedroom and he’d pop in Sonic CD. It just blew my mind while we were dashing through all the levels trying to collect as many rings as we could, and he had his Sega CD wired through his stereo receiver, so it sounded incredible (and still does). My cousin Bill is actually the person that turned me onto Sonic, and to this day I still look up to him and hope I can follow his footsteps to be successful. The Sega Genesis is also the one system that got me so interested in being a game designer. I just remember seeing it in action for the first time and thinking, “Damn, how am I able to control things happening on my TV like that? This is like magic!”. Since then, I’ve always had a passion for making video games. So I guess you can figure how much I appreciate seeing this video. For me, things are going to be changing a lot throughout my life– I’ll find different jobs, go to different schools, and probably date a few girlfriends before settling down with someone I love. But one of the things that will never change is my love for Sonic, video games in general, and last but not least, the joy and entertainment I get from watching your videos. So, thank you very much, and I wish you the best luck with everything and the AVGN movie!

Hell yeah! I wasn’t expecting this since you’ve only really mentioned Sonic in a video once to my memory, but Sonic is my childhood hero and you are one of my adult heroes so hearing you talk about him is gonna be awesome.
great vid – you’re looking for a bad retro sonic game – maybe do a puzzle madness vid and include dr robotniks mean bean machine.. that or 3d blast.. blech
@JimmyTehFreak. 3d blast is not good as the original trilogy, but is not bad at all. It has hard controls and the isometric platform thing. But is not Spot goes hollywood. it can be played pretty well. I still have my 3d blast Cartdridge and I still enjoy it a lot. If you want bad sonic retro games… checkover the game gear games (only a little bunch of these are actually good). Is strange you didn’t give mention sonic spinball (is not a bad pinball game, but is as “sonic” as puyo puyo sonic or isometric sonic). As other bad sonic retro games I think i will mention Sonic R (is still old (for windows 98 i think) and is pretty bad, specially because of the controls.
james, you should try and play sonic adventures and sonic adventures 2 for the Dreamcast, they are my favorite sonic games ever (i’ve played them all, and o too owned a genesis only for the purpose of playing sonic since i was(and still am!) a huge fan of sonic), you should realy try sonic advanture 2 for the dreamcast if you get the chance.
Awesome! I always wondered how the Sega Genesis was apart of James life as a kid. My parents were divorced at a young age, so I had Super Nintendo at my Mom’s and Sega Genesis at my Dads
I kind of expected James to shout out “April Fools! Of course I hate Sonic!!” at the end of the video, but I’m glad he didn’t because I love the games too
By the way, I wonder if his wife’s name really is ‘April’ like some people assume.
Anyway, this video was awesome, just like the “Contra memories” one! Keep up the great work!
I had Sonic 2 and Sonic Triple Trouble for Game Gear. I had an NES but couldn’t convince my parents to also get my a Genesis. They gave in with the Game Gear though I guess because it was handheld lol. Now I have most of the Sonic games for PS2. Still love them!

Do you have a cut off date for which games to review as the Angry Video Game nerd? I am aware that the bad Sonic games are the some of the most requested reviews for AVGN and what the exact cut off date you have, games like Sonic Unleashed and Sonic 06 would be beyond the cut off date.

Please sign the Angry Video Game Nerd petition for him to host Halloween Horror Nights…I now have 18 supporters, Thank you all for making that happen…I’m trying to get to 100.
@NilsBrindeau I don’t think he will review a new game… I only think he will review until the Game boy advance (and sonic advance is pretty good) . BTW Sonic Generations is really good. I would like that classic sonic would play more like the classic, but it still have a good level design and the music is really good.
@Why James gtfo, hes doing what he does best to survive in this world. A dream more or less, im sure you have one as well. Also prove me wrong, who are people going to know (you some guy from the internet who hasnt done anything with is live) OR (James the Angry Video Game Nerd) But in all kindness Piss off.
I guess I’m one of the few people who loves the old and new stuff. I can think of a handful from each that sucked but mostly they’re fun and enjoyable.

Never understood the Sonic attraction.
They are all one trick games and that one trick is speed.
The whole Mario Vs Sonic debate I just never could work out how they are even comparable to begin with.
Mario had some amazing level design, imaginative power ups, awesome boss battles. Mario 3 pretty much cemented Mario as THE platforming genre high bar.
Then along came Sonic and there was nothing to the levels other then going fast and doing loops, etc. They were dull games. Every level was the same, just different graphics. You could run trough a level in seconds. Yeah they tried to pad it out with bonus stages, it’s just a shame the bonus stages were better then the main game.
Yeah I too was blown away by Sonic when I first saw and played it. But one the initial shock of the colorful graphics and speedy game play sunk in. The wow factor quickly diminished.
You required no skill to play Sonic, none at all.
I like the fact that they brought out sonic 1, 2 and 3 on the nintendo ds as growing up I never had a sega genesis nor a super nintendo, so this is great for me adn others to play these games now and they still live up their name.

@killer7_tom Depends on your playstyle. You can easily take your time exploring a stage, speed isn’t the only way to play.

Anyway, this video was awesome, just like the “Contra memories” one! Keep up the great work!

Sonic CD is the best Sonic game ever!

Never played a bad sonic huh? Try “Sonic the Hedgehog” for 360/PS3 or Sonic 3D for genesis. Nerd material in both of em right there.
April 1, 2012 at 10:22 am
Do you have a cut off date for which games to review as the Angry Video Game nerd? I am aware that the bad Sonic games are the some of the most requested reviews for AVGN and what the exact cut off date you have, games like Sonic Unleashed and Sonic 06 would be beyond the cut off date.

I’d like to see what James think of the “New gen” sonics, and the latest sonic generation game.
April 1, 2012 at 2:05 pm
@NilsBrindeau I don’t think he will review a new game… I only think he will review until the Game boy advance (and sonic advance is pretty good) . BTW Sonic Generations is really good. I would like that classic sonic would play more like the classic, but it still have a good level design and the music is really good.
April 1, 2012 at 1:13 pm
James would have loved this “game” for his NES when he was young.

I guess I’m one of the few people who loves the old and new stuff. I can think of a handful from each that sucked but mostly they’re fun and enjoyable.

@Why James You’re such a failure at being a troll. Congratulations on being a fucking dumb ass!
